PUB NOTES

I quietly turned 43 years old this past week. And just a week before one of my most favorite people in the world Ruby Lee Coppedge, who helped raise me up from when I was knee high to a pig’s ass, turned 87. We met, as we almost always do, at S&S Cafeteria, so named after it’s founder JA Smith Jr. from Columbus, GA. We went through the line together, picking off that good pear salad, and we both had too much thousand island dressing. She got some sort of congealed, cloudy, raspberry confection, and I, because she’s never one to hold back a quip about how big I’ve gotten, abstained. We mostly sat in silence chewing. The skin around her eyes has gotten red and that concerned me, but I didn’t want to bring it up so I sat there being concerned. She talked about some grandkids and great-grandkids I’ve never met. I did get around to asking her what year she graduated high school and learned, for the first time, that her daddy didn’t let her finish school because he needed her to spread soda around the corn stalks in fields that surrounded their home place. She did this with a large bag

and a spoon, stalk by stalk, all summer, and begged him to let her go back. Her mama begged him too. She had all A’s. But he wouldn’t. So, she ended up getting married and leaving those fields anyway. She showed him, I guess. She showed people a lot in her day. We chewed and ate that S&S like it might be our last meal together. I hope it’s not. I remembered I needed to spend more time with her, I needed to learn more about her. And I damn near rode down there the very next day to do just that. But that would be weird, I thought. And I didn’t. And hell I probably won’t. But I thought about her all week, and I thought about all she did for me. Just during that single, almost silent dinner she did more to encourage me and lift me up than I deserve. I hope that I can offer that to someone someday. I hope that I can be at peace with myself enough to not have to say anything for folks to feel that love. It can drip off folks sometimes. You know them when you meet them. And I’ve been lucky to know a few. Love is an important thing, and I’m gonna spend some time on that this year.

11Qs A chat with Tinsley Ellis

THE QUESTION: Cherry Blossom 2018...? Would the annual festival benefit by moving forward two weeks? At every CBF event our staff attended we heard over and over again from tourists and new visitors... “Where are all the cherry blossoms?” Yes, I was extremely disappointed last year when I went to Central city Park and didn’t find any arts and crafts for sale. And having to pay to get in. I’m probably not even going this year. I will say this, the people who set up their bourbon chicken food tent over there by the stage is always delicious! That is the only place I will eat at when I go to the park, except for desserts like funnel cakes or apple dumplings. But last year, because of so much that was missing or changed, that Bourbon chicken place was the only place I stopped at and bought anything. - Leslie Mannheim It would have been nice if it was the same week as spring break. - Samantha Anne The trees are like the women in the area, you don’t what you are going to get from one week to the next. - Wally Scarborough If they moved it back there wouldn’t be any blossoms. The leaves are coming out already, and they come after the blossoms. It’s not like there’s a guy running around turning the trees on and off. The main issue most people seem to be having is pushing out the local acts and vendors in favor of the state fair circuit professional vendors at 3 times the price. - Austin Davis

READERS’ RESPONSE

Yes! One or two weeks would make a difference. It hasn’t felt like Cherry Blossom time at all this year. I remember in years past seeing lots of tourist buses. Maybe I have missed them this year but there really hasn’t been anything to see. I mostly miss the hot air balloons flying over in early morning. - Kay Lingold Beliveau

CITY PICK

4.14 Rev-Up for The Derby: A Day of Free, Crazy Fun!

The smell of hay bales and binding twine, the rush of a downhill thrust, the sleak designs... the ridiculous...

Ten years in, and the Magnolia Soap Box Derby has become one of the signature community events in Central Georgia. The second Saturday in April brings an all day, family-friendly extravaganza featuring the best aspects of competition and creativity. But whether you’re excited about the Big Wheel Race, the fun concepts or the feats of engineering, it’s the volunteers that are truly responsible for the Magnolia Soap Box Derby’s enduring success. “We have a group of around 20 or so Maconites who are excited about investing in the community with meaningful and worthwhile events,” says Alison Bender, Executive Co-Director of

the derby. “We have all been a part of the Derby for years, either racing, sponsoring, or simply being a spectator.” And what’s new to the Magnolia Soap Box Derby? “We’ll have all the great things everyone has grown to love over the years from a live DJ and entertainment to food trucks and the Big Wheel race for kids 4-9. In line with our mission and vision, as an extension of our Gravity Racing Challenge and STEM commitment, we will be adding a new interactive learning center in the park for elementary and middle school students. The “Hotwheel’s STEM Zone and Raceway” will feature stations focused on concepts like aerodynamics, weight, and energy. The racetrack will allow for a play and learn environment courtesy of a grant from the Community Foundation.” 2018 marks the second year that new and returning teams could apply for grant funding from the Knight Foundation. But how bout the races? Afterall, that ‘s what it’s all about. The Magnolia Soap Box Derby is made up of four seperate events that range from exhibition to professional. “It’s hard to pick a favorite,” says the the derby’s Vendors Chair, JD Dunston. “But I really love the Shade Tree Division.” The Shade Tree Division allows for teams to compete with a focus on original and entertaining designs. On the other end of the spectrum

is the Professional Division, Alison’s favorite. “These teams spend months preparing and building their cars. Their cars are pristine, there are no gimmicks or themes, just fierce competition!” The family-focused derby also offers an event for younger participants with the Kid’s Big Wheel Race. Mariana Furlin, Volunteer and Race Team Registration Chair claims the Big Wheel Race as her favorite of the day. “It’s so wonderful to see the little kids’ excitement as they race on Big Wheels down the track that the adults race! They are so wideeyed about the whole thing, it’s gets the viewers re-energized about the newness and thrill of it all! It’s infectious!” The Big Wheel Race is open to children ages 3-8, and parents can register the day of the event. Oh, and the derby’s got your Big Wheel covered! The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Gravity Racing Challenge funded through the Knight Foundation gives local highschool teams a chance to compete at a national level with the All-American Soap Box Derby. Marketing and Promotion Chair, Tyler Horne loves the event, “Because it allows regional high schools to meet each other and make a connection.” The Gravity Race has helped the derby grow with student teams from all over Georgia, and says Tyler, “It’s a great example of how education can be fun!”

Over 5000 spectators are expected to fill Washington Square Park and line Magnolia Street this year. “Get to the derby early and plan on staying all day,” advises JD Dunston. “We have you covered with non-stop entertainment, there is food and drink to purchase, vendors in Washington Park, and it really is meant to be an all-day event. Show up early to get the best viewing spots!” Tyler Horne and Mariana Furlin want new visitors be excited. “First time derby attendees should come prepared for epic energy. All day long this event is high energy,” says Tyler. Mariana offers tips for human and pet alike. “Remember the basics: sunscreen, hydrate and eat! It’s easy to get caught up in the event, there’s so much to see and do! Oh! If you bring your pet, don’t make it stand on the hot asphalt, and remember, it needs hydration too!” Team registration ends on Friday April 13th, so visit magnoliaderby.com for more information on the different divisions and to volunteer. “This group loves to have fun!” Alison exclaims. “We have all been a part of the Derby for years, either racing, sponsoring, or simply being a spectator. For all of us, the derby is the best family friendly, free event Macon has to offer!” Be a part of this exceptional day in Central Georgia, the Magnolia Soap Box Derby Saturday April 14! 11thHourOnline.com 13

WHY: Matt and Nikki Hammock saw an opportunity to open the doors on their dream, and in November 2017, Oliver’s Corner Bistro sparked into existence. The menu is ever-changing to feature seasonal ingredients from local Dirt Farmers that showcase Oliver’s signature: fresh, hand-made pasta that’s prepared and rolled daily. It’s the ravioli that folks have fallen in love with due to the Hammocks’ commitment to innovation. “Ravioli changes, creates a dialogue,” says Nikki. Kids Eat Free

Fed up at the Grocery Store!

or nearly free...

MONDAYS

By Bo Walker

It’s time for a trip to the grocery store. You find a convenient parking space, sensitively dodge the panhandlers, and locate a clean looking shopping cart. You give it a couple of test pushes, making sure it’s not one of those janky carts you always seem to get stuck with. It glides like the hot butter you’ll be cooking with later on. Triumphantly, you push your produce chariot through the carpeted lobby. When you hit the tiled floor of the store’s interior, your cart starts suddenly hitting invisible potholes. The people bagging groceries and cashiers stop what they’re doing to see what could be making such commotion, as though this is something surprising and not an assuredly constant occurrence. How did this happen? Begrudgingly, you return to the cart receptacle to select a different vessel. You make a selection and once more give a couple test pushes. Everything seems to check out, but this feels a little too familiar. After running a few ocular diagnostics on the wheels—as if you’d even know what to look for—things seem to be in working order. Unfortunately, you’ve been swindled a second time, and this new cart is even worse than the first. “It’s just a cart,” you tell yourself, “get over it and buy the damn groceries.” This is my Groundhog Day, yet without the charm or valuable life lessons of that famous Bill Murray film (also with 100% less Andie MacDowell and ice-sculpting). All through the store, pushing what sounds like an active jackhammer, I turn heads and

catch quizzical eyebrows from fellow shoppers, as if this were somehow my fault. The vibrations travel up my hands, through my arms, and make their way into my gradually hardening heart, while I watch my carefully selected items jostle to and fro. I’m done with it. From here on out I’m doing us all a service and taking these over-the-hill mobile food cages out to pasture. They’ll get one more sentimental lap around the “farm,” then I’m taking them out back for the “Old Yeller treatment.” Someone has to start this revolution, and if no one else is willing to step up and be the hero we deserve right now, I’m willing to be that guy. It is possible, however, I’m not alone. Perhaps, these heroes already exist and we haven’t even realized it. Think of all those times you have seen a shopping cart on the side of the road, miles away from any grocery store. Could that be the work of a like-minded cart vigilante? Someone so fed up with the cycle of shopping cart frustration, that they pushed it as far away from the store as they could stand? Whoever these people are, and whatever their motives, I commend them. That’s one less cart for me to have to send to the great grocery store in the sky. William “Bo” Walker is a Mercer University graduate and a lifelong Macon native, whose passions for comedy, music, writing, and an often passive commitment to success are only surpassed by his passion for reliable shopping carts.

“Okay, I was born in Washington, D.C. That’s my hometown. Went through the public school system there and graduated from George Washington University in 1973. Then I went to rabbinical school in New York City. Well, for the first year it was in Jerusalem…and then I was, next four years in New York City. Was ordained in ‘78. The year in Israel was during the Yom Kippur War which was a very interesting time to be there.

it’s like a whole day of worship service, Jerusalem was in a blackout.

It was Yom Kippur which was the holy state of the Jewish calendar year, the day of atonement… sitting in the Yochanan Ben Zakai Synagogue in the Jewish quarter of the old city of Jerusalem at about 2:00, 2:30, somewhere around there all of the air raid sirens started going off. What had happened that morning, I guess it was about 6:00 in the morning, an Israeli jet had kinda buzzed Jerusalem, which I thought was kinda weird for Yom Kippur to do it on that day.

But, anyway I was ordained in ‘78. I went to Israel when I was at George Washington University… and that just sorta opened my eyes. You know, we would be riding on the bus and the driver would say, ‘You see that plane to the left. That’s where David fought Goliath.’ I mean it’s one thing to tell the Bible stories. It’s another thing to actually be there. So, it was kind of that trip that sorta set me on the course that I’ve been on for the last 45 years, or so.

We rarely heard planes in Jerusalem. But that obviously was some kind of a signal to folks there. So all the air raid sirens, you know, went off. And, by the time we got out of the synagogue, because

So, I basically came south to Columbus in 1987. So I was really sorta able to hit the ground running here. For me, it was, ‘How do you integrate yourself into the community…as quickly as possible?’

I had to go fill the bathtub with water just in case something happened to the drinking supply. What ultimately happened was that the men, in particular…were called to their units…which left a lot of gaps, you know, in a lot of the services that they did as their job.

It was join the Rotary Club, do the Leadership Macon program…I started going to City Council meetings. Then, the opportunity presented itself to run for elected office…which I ran for and was lucky enough to get elected to. It was a time when people were saying, ‘We need good people. We need good people to serve on Council. So, I just sort of said, you know, ‘Here I am. Send me.’ I’m glad because I do think that my presence has brought some stability… The Council, now the Commission, We used to debate, ‘Which comes first – the businesses that attract the people or the people that attract the businesses?’ I think it’s the people being here, the population to be served that attracts the business. And we’re doing that now. I think that a lot more people are on the same page than they were before. ‘Cause, the growth and even still the potential for growth in the downtown area, it’s pretty phenomenal and it’s happening. Yeah, I’m pretty happy with the way things have worked out. 11thHourOnline.com 23

Lofts at Capricorn A Legendary Address By Traci Burns A decade ago, prospects for the historic Capricorn Studio looked bleak – the building, once a hub for genre-defining musicians like the Allman Brothers and Wet Willie, sat crumbling and untended on MLK, even landing on the 2010 “Places in Peril” list by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. But thanks to a partnership between Mercer University, NewTown Macon, Sierra Development, and Southern Pine Plantations, new life is being breathed into the studio and its surroundings. Work on the studio itself is ongoing, but the Lofts at Capricorn, a state-of-the-art loft living community, are open and ready for business. “I feel like we’ve pushed downtown Macon out another block,” says Nikki Rogers, Regional Manager for Sierra Development. “We’re stretching the perimeter here, and it’s exciting.” The Lofts at Capricorn will have 137 total lofts when they’re finished – construction on their final building is slated to be completed by the end of March – and in addition to the spacious floor plans, state-ofthe-art amenities, beautiful views, and private parking, they also have a wonderfully appointed fitness center and the only infinity swimming pool in any downtown community. These things fit into their goal of offering a

vibrant, healthy lifestyle to people also seeking to live in a community steeped in history and poised on the edge of exciting growth. The Capricorn restoration will bring with it even more opportunities – according to Larry Brumley, senior vice president for marketing communications & chief of staff at Mercer, who is overseeing the project, the goal is to have it completed by 2019, which will mark Capricorn’s 50th anniversary. In addition to modernizing the studio and returning it to an operable state, they also hope to create “music incubators” – rehearsal rooms of varying sizes that musicians can rent by the month. A mini-museum, or “interpretive space,” is slated for the second floor and will be a free-to-the-public interactive display of Macon music history memorabilia, and there are also plans to have office space available for local nonprofits. Although the studio itself isn’t open yet, the musical history of the building is alive and well in the lofts’ décor – photos and records from local music icons like Little Richard and Wet Willie dot the walls, and Michael Pierce’s eye-catching black and white mural, originally painted as part of an Earth Day celebration in 1996, has been lovingly restored by the artist – it now faces the out-

door pool, but it has also been translated into an outsized piece of artwork that decorates the lobby area. “We hope this space will be able to be used for lots of things besides just a great place to live – that’s part of why we’re so excited to be downtown,” says Rogers – and undoubtedly, it will; the Cherry Blossom fashion show afterparty was already held there, and the Young Professionals plan to hold a social event there in May. Part of what made Capricorn so great was the unlikely partnerships that were forged to create that music – in those prejudiced and segregated days, the racially diverse artists and businessmen who worked together to create Capricorn Records were able to stumble onto something innovative and new – the sweaty, twangy, bluesy, funky Southern Rock sound. This new development, also a bit of an unlikely partnership, ensures that the birthplace of that sound will get the attention it deserves – the revitalization and rebirth of the studio and the surrounding area will offer lots of new, exciting options, including the possibility of living in a loft with a truly legendary address at Lofts at Capricorn. “Jim Daws [president of Sierra Development] has a vision that just blows my mind,” says Rogers. “He continues to get better. I respect that he wants to pour everything back into Macon and continue to help Macon be a great place to live, work, and play.” Lofts at Capricorn 520 MLK Jr Blvd, Macon GA 31201 Phone: 478-200-4567 www.liveatlofts.com www.facebook.com/liveatlofts 11thHourOnline.com 25

D

ani-Rae started with the concept of “Quality at affordable prices.” Best friends Jordan Rae and Brittany Danielle worked together at a local real estate office in 2014, and during their lunch break, would often shop online for unique outfits and accessories. One random day at work, one of the girls came across a bracelet on Etsy she just had to have! But the bracelet was over $50, and she couldn't pay so much for so little. After a little research, both girls decided, “Why not start making our own jewelry?” The response from family and friends encouraged them to take their hobby and turn it into a business. Fast forward three years... Opportunities arose and their "passion for fashion" led them to a decision to offer clothing as well. From there, a website was formed and soon after their brick-and-mortar located in Ingleside Village. Jordan and Brittany love the new advantages of having a store front and the ability to work hands-on with their customers. The welcoming, chic space is overflowing with custom jewelry in every shape and size, and hand-selected spring apparel. Visit Dani Rae Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

AMANDA SHIRES Amanda Shires is a singer, a songwriter, a Texan, and a violinist. She’s a mother and a wife. It’s easy to compare her to female icons-- Dolly, Emmylou, or even Loretta... All women who’ve defied convention in the expressly male-dominated world of country music. But there’s a fresh fight being played out across the airwaves, and Amanda Shires has her dukes up. Ashley Doolin caught up with Amanda at home to discuss her show in Macon on April 11th, her new album, and just how Mama plans to change that Nashville sound. You’ve gotten to tour and perform as well as befriend one of my all time idols, the one and only (because God broke the mold after him) Mr John Prine… What has that been like for you? Being taken under such an amazing man and artist’s wing like that? Oh God yes, he’s amazing! It’s a dream really. At first it was terrifying, like in a horror story terrifying. For about the first week that I played with him, I couldn’t conjure up words or remember any of the words to his songs, which I know by heart, and now I know them even when I’m around him! It’s terrifying meeting someone that is a hero because you have this idea in your mind of who they are, what they stand for, and what they believe just by listening to their music. Sometimes when you meet somebody that you have sort of pictured and developed as a person in your mind, it doesn’t add up in real life. And I was scared about that, because I always wanted him to be my hero. I wanted him to always be that person that I had in my mind, that of such great character and wit. After a week I figured out that he was the person I had imagined that he was, and I didn’t have to experience the thing that I have

had to experience before with heroes-- that they let you down, and he has never let me down. He’s the same person on stage that he is off stage. A practical joker, and a card player, an oyster eater, and terrible at shaving his own face! He’s just awesome! So, for those listeners of ours that live under a rock and don’t know, you’re the wife and band member to some guy named Jason Isbell. How is Mr. Shires doing? He’s doing great! He’s in the kitchen right now feeding the baby! She’s not really a baby anymore, although I keep calling her a baby. She’s 2 ½. I’m a mother-- it was the hardest job I ever had, and along the way I lost myself a little bit. I can’t remember the exact tweet, but I can recall a tweet your husband sent out after you found out you were expecting that asked for both his and your fans to quit saying that you would stop playing and touring because you wouldn’t, it was something you loved. I absolutely despise the way some of our society thinks a woman’s place is still only in the home and was so happy that he addressed it like he did. How have you

maintained and preserved your identity through your journey of motherhood? I think you lead by example, and if there’s something out there that you want to do... that you’ve picked a partner that will encourage you and have your back when you make those kinds of decisions... He’s been that for me, anytime somebody has said, “I guess you’re not going to tour anymore”, he would have my back when I would lose my sh*t and say, “Oh no, you didn’t just say that!” and go off. A lot of it is awareness too. It’s a relatively new thing in the span of history that women can have their jobs, and also their identity as an individual, AND be a mother. And a wife or whatever. So, I think the more folks that do it, the more that our communities allow it, and also allow more women to help and have jobs, like being a Nanny or an assistant-- I don’t have one of those, but the more we can encourage it, adapt, grow, and evolve then the easier it will be on everybody. It does take a village, and sometimes people don’t want to reach out for help. My Mom just moved to town a couple of months ago. She was living in Texas. That’s been a HUGE help. Just to have somebody that you can count on that’s just a few miles down the road. Someone that can help you when you’re freaking out because of a fever or whatever. I don’t know how I got through it up to this point. She’s only been here a few months. And you have a new album in the works for 2018-you’re working with Dave Cobb again on this, correct? You’ve also mentioned that Gillian Welch will make a guest appearance? What can your listeners expect from you on this? We finished the record, and I am so excited! Yeah, she is. MAN! That was such an honor-- that she liked the song enough to sing harmonies. She’s the only guest appearance on the album. I mean, Jason is playing guitar, but he doesn’t sing. She is the only guest on 11thHourOnline.com>> 29

1 The Beatles: Eight Days A Week Hulu Ron Howard's look at The Beatles from 1962-1966.

Hear Seth Walker on 100.9 The Creek and catch him live on the Creek Stage @ The Rookery presented by Pretoria Fields April 5th! In 1913, Victrola issued a violin with piano version of Shubert's Ave Maria. The violinist, Mischa Elman, had been a child prodigy. He studied at the St. Petersberg Conservatory, and at the time of the Victrola release, was widely considered the greatest violinist in the world. He was passionate and evocative, a genius capable of manipulating emotions through music. A Japanese teenager named Shinichi Suzuki heard Elman's Ave Maria in 1915, and it compeled him. Suzuki's father owned a violin factory in Nagoya, but neither Shinichi nor any of his eleven siblings played music. In fact, the Suzuki children thought the violins were only toys. Mischa Elman's music changed that. Shinichi plucked a violin from the factory and began to mimic the sounds produced from the Shellac. In less than five years, he was learning beside the masters in Europe. As a student and then a teacher himself, Suzuki held the belief that anyone could play music. Children, he thought, learned to speak easily enough-- why not begin teaching them music in the same manner? The Suzuki Method was born from the idea that beautiful music creates beautiful individuals-and that's what Seth Walker was taught to believe. Seth Walker grew up in North Carolina surrounded by music and love. His parents were Quakers and had decided to combine households with another family in the early 1970s. They were also classical musicians who used the play-by-ear Suzuki Method to teach 4-year-old Seth violin and cello. The father of the other family in the commune was a country music fan, and Seth absorbed the wandering tales of Waylon and Willie as well as the sonatas and suites of Bach and Beethoven. It 30 MARCH 30 - APRIL 13, 2018

was the blues, though, that took a teenage Seth Walker, put a guitar in his hand and put him on the path. That path led to Texas. Austin, TX in the 1990s was a cornucopia of musical flavors. Seth Walker had arrived in the “Live Music Capital of the World” a guitar player, but soon discovered his vocal ability set him apart, created a new dynamic. He began to focus on singing, then writing. Austin was good to Seth Walker. He developed a style, a unique musical point of view. He made albums including a self-titled release in 2006 that put the next decade into motion. Seth met and began collaborationg with legendary songwriter and producer Gary Nicholson. That relationship resulted in the 2009 album Leap of Faith. Seth made Nashville his home base and continued to write, record, and tour. In 2012, he released Time Can Change, a loungey collection of songs featuring guest appearances by Ray Benson and Raul Malo. For his next album, Seth took to the history drenched haunts of New Orleans, and with Oliver Wood at the helm, created the soul soaked Sky Still Blue. Seth Walker is smooth, effortless in his delivery. There's no single influence detectable in his music. Instead, he's one of Americana's greatest enthusiasts, an artist who approaches his craft without genre distinction. Nothing exemplifies the spirit of Seth Walker more than his latest album, Gotta Get Back. In addition to guest appearances from the Wood Brothers, the album also features cello and violin arrangements from Seth's parents and sister. It's a record intended to feel like home.

THE INTERVIEW, CONTINUED.... Shires with husband Jason Isbell

Amanda Shires at the CMA awards.

the record on a song called “White Feather”. I didn’t even know what to say... She could have even just made up words on the song, and I would have been great! It was an honor that she would think it was good enough to lend her voice to. One last question... You’ve called radio stations asking why they’re not playing more female artists, you wore that great tank with “Mama wants to change that Nashville sound” to the CMA awards... Women are being overlooked, especially in country music. In a perfect world, what do you want to see for yourself, for our mothers, sisters, and our daughters. Yeah, I got worst dressed on E-Online, but who cares! I got awesome dressed on Rolling Stone! SO, who are you gonna believe? You know, we gotta start somewhere ,and I mean, I started about a year and a half ago by listening to a station for a whole hour, or as long as I could stand it. I would write down the songs and what time I was listening, and then I would call in, and I would ask-- and then there would be a lot of blame shifting and circle talk. Like the one guy in Knoxville said, “Well, you have to

request women on a face book page,” and made this long ass thing up saying, “after they get requested for a certain amount of times, then we’ll play them.” And I was like, that makes no sense because how would you hear a new voice to even request that way?! How do you know who to request if you’re not playing them?! How can you request X and X artist if you’ve never heard them? At least have a show where you feature female artists, for-I don’t know? 30 minutes would be a good start! Here, New Artists, New Women artists of the week, something. That would be great! Then people could call in or do that stupid face book poll, something. It’s a start. I think it would be great. It’s still frustrating to me that songs like “Female” (by Keith Urban) can get into the top 4 but yet Keith Urban’s not doing anything as far as asking in this campaign... As far as to have female artists played and book ended to that song. In a way, it seems that folks are grabbing on to this thing as a way to sell songs, and you know-- it’s not a trend! It shouldn’t be treated as a way for men to make money on it! On a thing that is not THEIR problem, that They are actually going through. Yeah, it’s nice for you to consider. The sentiment is nice, but you’re

not doing enough. And even that song sucks. Nobody has to agree, we all get to have our own opinions, but to me that song sucks. Let’s hear some more women’s voices. This is a soapbox you can get me going on for a good while, Ashley! The big problem is that they’ve only allowed 1 or 2 spots that a woman can occupy so then women have to compete against each other for 2 spots, and guys get to sit around and be friends because there’s lots of room for them, and then people think that nobody likes women’s music because nobody buys women’s music, but that’s also a lie too-- because there aren’t enough women artists out there to balance the statistic of it. After a while, things become a little bit more clear, and you can only take so much for so long. I look forward to hearing your new album and also doing a Deconstructiong Divas show on you, here at The Creek! I love the damn Creek! Read the entire interview at 11thhouronline.com, and don’t miss Amanda Shires on April 11th!

LUKE GALLOWS

A fixture on the American independent wrestling scene and joining the line-up at WWE Live in Macon on April 1. BY AARON IRONS

Luke Gallows signed with the WWE’s Deep South Wrestling developmental territory in 2005. Since then, Luke’s been member of CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society. He’s competed for TNA and Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore. In 2013, Luke Gallows ventured to New Japan Pro Wrestling. There, he partnered with Karl Anderson, becoming a member of the 21st Century’s answer to the Four Horsemen, NWO, and D-Generation X-- an international, cross-promotional wrestler’s alliance known as the Bullet Club. I had the chance to talk to Luke ahead of the WWE Live event at Macon Coliseum on April 1. And brother (and sister), believe me when I say we coulda talked all afternoon...

I think it’s a fine line that you have to walk because you have to be able to manipulate people’s emotions to tell a proper story, to have them emotionally invested in exactly what you’re doin’-- and I think that is... When you can nail that formula down, and you come together with a program... with a guy or people that you’re workin’ with, and you push that focal point and that button, and you elicit that reaction, especially today when everybody’s got cell phone at their fingertips...The attention span for entertainment, per se, might not be what it once was. You’re doin’ somethin’ special anytime you can do that. It’s a really cool feeling. My dream WrestleMania match... Ohhh... Karl and I, I think would love to be in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Downtown Atlanta... Give us WWE RAW Tag Team championship... We’ll take in one corner, Gallows & Anderson. In the other corner Stone Cold Steve Austin & The Rock, and in the other corner the Rock n’ Roll Express-- Triple Threat! Bring it on, baby! April 1st, man-- we were just talkin’ about it... That is gonna be a locked, loaded, stacked card. You’re gonna see everybody... Roman Reigns in the house, Finn Balor, Gallows & Anderson vs the Miztourage! This is the final WWE Live event, other than Monday Night RAW in Atlanta, before we head down to Wrestlemania 34. We’re geared up! If you are in the area for the Macon show or for RAW in Atlanta, stop by my tattoo shop. Bring your ticket stub for 50% off your tattoo-- Painted Gypsy Tattoo 1140 Nortec Dr Conyers, GA. So, like I said, this is an exciting weekend for me. We’re gearin’ up for Wrestlemania, we’re in my home state, and I can’t wait to see everybody!”

NIGHTLIFE He might’ve cut his teeth on the Yardbirds and Cream, but it was B.B. King and a mythical guitar string that inspired Tinsley Ellis to become a bluesman. Ellis found the sweet spot between enthusiast and performer, and since his solo debut on Alligator Records in 1988 has defined his career with enthralling live shows and passionate albums. After thirty years and eighteen releases, Tinsley Ellis went home to Alligator Records with Winning Hand, a collection that champions tradition while allowing for Ellis’ signature innovation. In anticipation of his show at the Hargray Capitol Theatre on March 31st, Tinsley took the time to answer a few questions... - AARON IRONS

11 QUESTIONS WITH

Tinsley Ellis

1. Watching you play, there’s a smooth calculation that occurs between the beats-- where do you go in those moments? I like melodic playing rather than just seeing how many notes I can cram into a solo. It took many years to reach the point where my solos could breathe.

guitar player? Write your own songs!

2. During an episode of Into The Mystic, Kirk West commented on the 1960’s British Invasion essentially returning the blues to American culture. I know you’re a fan of that era. Was there a record that made a particular impression and started you down the path? John Mayall’s Beano album with a young Eric Clapton on guitar is the epitome of British Blues Rock. I still listen to it 50 years later.

7. You released Georgia Blue on Alligator Records back in 1988, and now you’re back with the label. Does it feel like a homecoming? Yes, it does. And they are the best label out there for a roots artist like me. I found that out the hard way!

3. Okay-- you’re on the road, and you get seperated from your gear. Everything is safe and sound, but you get to the gig and only one guitar makes it on time-- which one’s it gotta be? My 1967 Gibson ES 345 (because no man has ever wanted to sound like Freddie King more than I). 4. Your latest album, Winning Hand, features a rendition of Leon Russell’s “Dixie Lullaby”-- what made that essential? We lost Leon a short while back and I wanted to do a tribute to him. Leon is my biggest songwriting influence. 5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever given another

6. Better creative space, the stage or the studio? Stage. It’s every blues artist’s natural habitat.

8. No one’s around, house is empty-- what do you sit and play when nobody’s listening? Be honest... Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Damn, I miss the 70’s. 9. Luther Dickinson said, “The blues is not children’s music. We get better at it, the older we get.” Would you call that an accurate statement? Yes. Because I’m seldom entertained by virgins. 10. Last actual vinyl record you paid money for? B.B. King - Blues Is King. A used copy at Wuxtry Records in Decatur. 11. Who’d make the Tinsley Ellis “Dream” Blues Band? Me with Chuck Leavell on piano, Kevin McKendree on organ, Calep Emphrey on drums and Benny Turner on bass. 11thHourOnline.com 33

Five things to see, hear, watch, drink or eat.

WHAT WE’RE DRINKING

THREE TAVERNS BREWING LORD GREY SOUR

Years ago, when Volvo owners everywhere started riding fixies and paying 8 dollars for a pint of “craft beer” I thought it was just silly. Beer is Beer is Beer is what my ancestors taught me. Bud Heavies worked just fine. Eventually though, I started venturing out, trying new stuff here and there. I didn’t like much of it. Heavy craft beers make me feel too full, and though my figure might lead you to believe I like such a feeling, I really don’t. I don’t like feeling like I’m drinking the equivalent of a bucket of mashed potatoes. Then I found Sours. I like Sours a lot. And my favorite Sour right now is Lord Grey; a recipe worked out by the good folks of Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur that uses Earl Grey Tea Leaves. (Jesus, who am I?) It’s a tart, crisp easy drinking ale with herbal flavors and a pretty heavy citrus back. It’s part of their Sour Asylum Series, and as all the beers in the series, the can is a bad ass design by Metaleap Creative in Atlanta. We sell it at the Socity Garden on Ingleside, but you can get it just about anywhere for six bucks a can. Yeah, it’s that good. BRAD EVANS

REQUIRED LISTENING

THE BEATLES ABBEY ROAD By AMBER PIERCE of The Vineyard Band

I almost didn’t write about Abbey Road. I thought it too cliché, but then realized a lot of people only know The Beatles’ early pop hits in their “boy band” days. I love those pop hits and those boy band days, but only knowing The Beatles in that way is like only knowing love before you’ve had your first kiss. Or your first time. Puppy love is awesome, but it would be a shame if that’s all you ever knew. As an avid traveler and constant commuter, Abbey Road has kept me focused on many a trip and kept me company in many an airport. It’s my go-to when I am on a mission to get stuff done but need to go with the flow. My go-to karaoke song happens to be “Oh, Darling”, and my band does a cool country version of “Come Together.” As a yoga instructor, I’ve taught an entire vinyasa flow class to this album, and I regularly include tracks in my current teaching playlists. I’ve cleaned, drawn, written, painted, laughed, cried and even f---d to this album a kazillion times over the years. It’s the flow, man. It’s the perfect album to get lost in thought with, to contemplate to, to brain storm on and to get those creative juices... flowing! From start to finish, Abbey Road seamlessly blends one song into the next with interesting and surprising reprisals where you’d least expect. Despite the ease in which the songs flow, they’re also in striking contrast to one another and span a broad range of styles. If you’ve never listened to Abbey Road, get your hands on a copy to discover the depth and variety The Beatles were able to produce within one concept. Or just fall in love with it all over again.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

SIR DOUG AND THE GENUINE TEXAS COSMIC GROOVE

In the ragged, righteous, and rowdy history of Texas music, there was never anybody quite like Doug Sahm. There’s a myth that’s grown up around the man, and I confess I didn’t know any of it. But I’m obsessive over the obscure titles that pop up daily on Netflix and Amazon Prime (check out instantwatcher.com, and prepare to lose an hour of your day). Perusing the daily Prime releases, I spotted 2015’s Sir Doug and the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove. Sahm fell in love with the pedal steel at a young age and become a prodigy. In the mid 1960’s, he and Augie Meyers formed the Sir Douglas Quintet in an attempt to ride the British wave of bands invading America, but the true Texans eventually eschewed their Beatle-bobs for Stetsons and began a revolution in Lonestar rock n’ roll. From introducing Tex-Mex music into West coast psychedalia and vice versa to constantly searching for “the groove”, the truth of Doug Sahm is as good as the legend. AARON IRONS

WHAT WE’RE COOKING

MAPLE GLAZED DUCK BREASTS

New recipes can be intimidating. When you say “tonight’s dinner is duck”, it can be downright scary. This recipe is a flavorful boost to cooking duck breast the right way, with a slightly spicy maple syrup glaze. I promise you, in about a week after having first made this dish, you’ll want to make it again! ASHLEY DOOLIN

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO

PODCAST COCAINE & RHINESTONES

On the surface, the world of classic country music never crossed the line. The artists were clean cut, wholesome and exuded the traditional morals and values of rural America. They personified the Hee Haw mentality. It’s one of the reasons the outlaws of the 1970’s were viewed as so shocking. But in reality, Music Row and the Nashville guard were hiding secrets. Cocaine and Rhinestones: The History of Country Music, a podcast hosted by Tyler Mahan Coe, flips country music upside down and exposes its dirty underbelly for all to see. Who better to throw some mud on country music’s shiny exterior than Tyler, son of legendary outlaw rocker David Allan Coe? Podcast episode highlights include a drunken Ernest Tubb shooting up the lobby of the National Life building in downtown Nashville, the questionable authorship of Bobbie Gentry’s classic “Ode To Billie Joe”, and the rumored nude photo blackmail of Jeannie C. Riley after the release of “Harper Valley PTA”. Cocaine and Rhinestones has quickly become the number one music podcast on iTunes. Coe is gearing up for season two and has been given access to rare archive materials in the Country Music Hall of Fame for his research. As Buck and Roy would say, “It’s gonna be a doozy!” Find it on iTunes. TONY DOOLIN 34 MARCH 30 - APRIL 13, 2018

INGREDIENTS: 2 Duck Breasts ¼ C Pure Maple Syrup ½ tsp Cayenne Pepper 1 Tblsp Brown Sugar Pinch of salt and pepper Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Using a sharp knife, trim any excess skin around the duck meat so that it is not “overhanging”. Slice (Score) a few slits into the top of the skin being careful not to cut into the meat. Season your duck with salt and pepper and place them, skin side down, in a dry, cold skillet. Place the skillet over medium heat and cook for about 5 minutes. (starting with a cold skillet will help render the fat out of the skin.) After about 5 minutes, the skin should be starting to brown, if not, turn the heat up a bit. Once browned, flip the breasts so they sear on the bottom side. Cook in skillet for about 2 minutes, then place in oven proof dish- skin side down. Place in 400 degree oven and bake 4 minutes, skin side down. Remove from oven, flip to skin side up and baste them with your maple glaze, returning to oven for 4 more minutes. Remove and glaze again. Let breasts sit for 5 minutes before slicing.
