And the Richard Betts Award for ‘Being Yourself’ goes to...

I won’t ever forget the first time I saw Denny Hanson.

It was a long time ago, when I was young. We’d just started this paper, and I didn’t know much about the Macon music scene I’ll admit. The owners of CJ’s Bar & Grill up on Riverside Drive asked me to come and judge a songwriter’s competition they were having to help drum up some business. At the time, they were very connected to some of the bigger names in local music here. A lot of people were in attendance, and a lot of musicians came up on stage that night. Lisa Love, who worked at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame was on the judges panel, and Marcus James Henderson, who would go on to play on the road with the Marshall Tucker Band was also up there with us. We listened intently and were impressed by a lot of the local talent there that night. But it wasn’t until a 16 year old kid wearing jean shorts and a really tight green-striped tank top came up on stage with a beat up guitar and wailed into a microphone that I knew we had a winner. He looked afraid. But he wasn’t. When

he started playing he was not afraid. “Livin Without You” was the name of the song. I can still sing most of it, though I haven’t heard it in more than a decade.

His voice was high pitched and broke up sometimes, like it hadn’t even finished changing yet. Some people didn’t like it... A lot of people didn’t like it. But we all did. It was unpolished and original and that spoke to me, and we gave him the prize, which probably didn’t amount to much more than a bar tab-- and he wasn’t even old enough to use it. People got mad and complained about it, and we were not asked to come back and judge again, but that was ok with me. Later on, Wes and Rob and I would record that song with Denny. And after that, Denny would front dozens of bands, get kicked out of the Bird for trying to play a microwave one night, and he would continue to write, and he would create a collective called Nomenclature that changed things, and he would move away, and he would visit some dark places, and he would come back from them. I see him sitting somewhere today, with his hair perfectly placed on his skull, and his skinny legs, and his fingers long and made from the edges. He’s in a skimpy jacket , perfect shoes, reading some e.e. cummings book on erotic poetry and not trying to be

anything.

But he is.

He’s original. And as long as I’ve known him he has been that. And I met someone like that one time.

Not too long after I’d seen Denny that first time, I ran into Richard Betts at the home of Bill Lucado, and we screamed into the night together for a couple of days, and he sang to me and tried to fight people and it was the most legendary thing that ever happened, and I’m sure he doesn’t remember it at all, but I felt something about Dickey that night. He was an American original. So, when we decided to give out the Richard Betts Award For Being Yourself award this year, my vote went with Denny Hanson. The Denny Lama we call him around these parts. Lucky for me, my vote still counts. Denny Hanson, I love you. I love where you’ve been, and I can’t wait to see where you go my friend. Congrats.

What will parking meters mean for Downtown Macon employees & residents? And will the meters improve business?

Macon-Bibb County Downtown has reached the point where on a busy night it is almost impossible to find parking. This is the next step for a city that has growing and thriving downtown. Folks will park on the street and leave their car all day, so this is needed not to generate money but to generate turnover in the parking spots.

I don’t think $1.50 or whatever for an hour of parking is going to deter anyone from coming downtown.

Now, so much money spent on downtownbring people to downtown, get people downtown......this will kill it!

How is that supposed to help on a busy night? People show up at 6pm, pay for 2 hours and can stay in that spot for the rest of the night. Don’t use the busy nightlife as a justification for this when the proposed parameters will have no affect on it.

Perhaps Macon should finish construction on the new parking decks before you implement the meters. As it is now, there aren’t a whole lot of off street options if you’re on Poplar, especially if you have mobility issues. The one parking deck on the street is at the far end, and unless you have a monthly pass, you can’t use its only door to get back in because it requires a card key for entry.

And has the city reached out to the downtown business owners and let them know what options they have for their employees? My boss has not been told anything about the meters and had to hear it from me. What parking decks or off street parking lots will offer reasonable monthly packages? Surely Macon doesn’t expect the downtown employees to pay hourly rates every day just to come to work.

If daily parking garages are cheaper than street parking, it would encourage their use. I don’t think the garages or lots out of the way, like behind the Tubman museum are are well marked as options for visitors.

If someone is driving down Cherry, shouldn’t there be signs pointing towards the available garages on Mulberry and Poplar? I’ll also point out that the address for the garage next to Douglass theater takes you to it’s exit, not the entrance.

You have to make it easy and cheap. I also think that the first 30 or so minutes of on street parking should be free to encourage turnover and make the 2nd hour of parking in the garage free to keep the restaurant crowds longer. I’ve seen these meters work in other small cities.

I would personally find it very helpful if someone put together a “guide to parking garages in downtown Macon.” Like with a map and price comparisons, details on hourly vs daily options, pros and cons on each such as access/lighting/automated vs manned with an attendant/security. No joke.

- Nikki H NO ONE wants to walk, not even a block, from where they want to go. This is not exclusive to Macon, but definitely an issue here. The parking garage at Gateway Plaza is free after 6:30 and all weekend and there is never anyone parked there unless they are going to the Douglas Theater.

Downtown is a great place to visit, shop and dine. The meters however are a bad idea and I feel they are a deterant for a lot of people. Its just another charge that for a lot of young couples on budgets that fee could go toward their dinner tip or an ice cream at Scoops.

- Margaret G Was a long time Macon resident, and now live in Decatur. Decatur’s downtown has gone through many iterations of parking meters, but they finally have a system that seems to work. You can pay with cash or card, but you pay referencing your license plate number. That way, if you have paid for, say, an hour, but you are only in a shop for 15 minutes, you can get in your car and move to another spot across the way and your payment goes with you. You can also instruct the meter to alert you if you are about to run out of time (and if you’ve paid with a card, you can add time remotely).

They have a 2 hour max (some meters in Atlanta have a 4 hour max). But, parking is free after 6pm daily, and is free all day Sunday. The last thing I’d want to have to do is worry about moving my car every 2 hours if I were at a restaurant or bar.

The meters came up...downtown came back to life. Sure some big cities have them...and it works because those big cities actually have something to go do and see...not just visit the bars and a few stores and specialty shops. It will kill the downtown area once again. People will not pay to park for a 5-10 minute stop and I, for one, will not trust my debit card in a meter on a Macon street anywhere!

AN OVERNIGHT TRIP TO THE ATL

FINE DINING AND CAN CRUSHING The Creek 100.9 on-air personality Anthony Ennis and friends escape to the ATL for a meal at Atlanta’s hottest new restaurant, Staplehouse, and ending the night with Blondie at the famed Clermont Lounge.

Staplehouse was voted Atlanta’s “Best New Restaurant” but manages to be one of it’s best kept secrets...

Still, Staplehouse is not the easiest place to get a reservation. They open reservations every 2nd Friday of each month for the following month, and it’s sold out in about two minutes. I’d been trying to get a reservation since last summer, but I missed every time. Somehow, my girlfriend Erika was able to snag one for my birthday. I could say it’s luck, but I’ll call it karma (or maybe love) instead. Of course, when in Atlanta, you don’t JUST have dinner...

We started by checking into the Highland Inn in Atlanta’s Poncey-Highland neighborhood. It’s a hip, quaint hotel full of character that has been around for over 90 years. We walked through the door on it’s beautiful front porch and were greeted immediately by human and cat alike. We were given a traditional key and told which small hallway or staircase to follow to our room. EVERY room is different, and you never know what you’re going to get. Decorated with a variety of old art or random knick knacks, it’s always cool.

Staplehouse is in the Old 4th Ward. The menu changes based on seasonality, and what’s available from the farmers they work with. You honestly don’t know what the menu is until you are seated-- and that’s what makes it such a great experience. Staplehouse serves small plates that are meant to be shared. Although they are for-profit, they work directly with The Giving Kitchen, a non-profit providing emergency assistance to restaurant workers in need. Our waiter, Harris, was extremely helpful with suggestions on what to order. Staplehouse has an open kitchen that can be viewed from any seat in the restaurant.

Another interesting thing about Staplehouse-- the kitchen staff chooses the order your courses arrive for the best experience possible. Our menu was very “earthy”, and the wine pairing was the highlight and perfect complement to the entire meal.

After a fantastic meal of roasted carrots with a beef fat sauce, blue crab, mushroom cannelloni, beef tartare (my favorite), and plenty more we were spent. We grabbed an Uber and headed back to the hotel where Pirate (the

cat I mentioned earlier) decided to stroll down the hall and hang out in our room for a bit. We had some drinks and decided it was too early to quit. So, what did we do?

Well... We did what any sensible person would do in Poncey-Highland... We went to the famous Clermont Lounge. Now, if you’re not sure what the Clermont is, I’ll fill you in: The Clermont is Atlanta’s first and longest continually operating adult entertainment venue.

Known for it’s funky atmosphere and unusual dancers, The Clermont is a place you MUST visit (if you’re over 21). We got there right before the Friday night crowd and were able to get a seat at the bar and talk to our bartender, Chandra. Chandra has been bartending at The Clermont off-and-on for nearly 30 years. She’s served everyone from Ashton Kutcher to Lady Gaga, Anthony Bourdain and more. The crowd grew, and after copious amounts of PBR and tequila shots, it was time to go.

We took the 10 minute walk back to the Highland with bellies full, thirsts quenched, and exhausted.

The next morning, we grabbed a bite at Home Grown in East Atlanta. To say Home Grown is “just” a local-sourced casual diner doesn’t do it justice. It’s a modern take on the meat & 3 with an expansive breakfast and lunch menu to fill any appetite-- and it’s ALWAYS packed! But don’t worry, the wait is never long.

We were seated in the main dining room, surrounded by every demographic imaginable-- young & old, hipster & yuppy, families and more. Our server was awesome and quick to respond to anything we might need. Being a good Southern boy, I had to go with biscuits & gravy and fried chicken. Once the food arrived, I think I just blacked out because the next thing I knew, my plate is empty, and I’m slowly falling into a food coma (or “The Itis” as some call it), but I can’t nap just yet. We pay our tab and start the trek back to Macon, full and happy yet again.

If you’re looking for a great time and an easy getaway-- visit some of the best (and quirkiest) places Atlanta has to offer. It’s a fun day trip or a quick overnight.

Just remember: have your finger on the trigger at noon every second Friday for a Staplehouse reservation, Clermont is cash only, and don’t mind the wait at Home Grown. It’s all worth every minute and penny .

This August, the DREAM Academy will open it’s doors and feature an Authentic Arts Integration curriculum.

Students of the state charter school will have the opportunity to embrace a structured academic setting designed to promote creativity and critical thinking through art and music. It’s an exciting time for education in Bibb County, and no one’s more enthusiastic than the DREAM Academy’s new superindent, Dr. Chara Willaford.

11 QUESTIONS with

Dr. Chara Willaford, Superintendent of DREAM Academy 1. Tell me about the first time you ever heard an Otis Redding Song.

The first time I recall hearing Otis Redding was when I was a little girl. My grandmother lived with us and played Otis Redding often on the record player.

2. When was it you became aware of the Foundation, and it’s “Dreams” to start a school here?

I learned about DREAM Academy last fall as my husband and I were researching various places to live and work. I came across DREAM as we researched Macon, and I immediately became excited because I love ARTS and the whole concept. I have been in love with DREAM Academy, the Otis Redding Foundation and Macon ever since!

3. What’s the most important thing you ever learned in school?

I was fortunate to go to diverse schools that encouraged us not to judge a book by its cover. Get to know people. At our core, people are more alike than different.

4. Did you have a least favorite subject and why? Math. I hated fractions.

5. Arts and music in education. Why is it so important? And what happens when it’s not important in a school system anymore?

Arts and music education are the impetus to critical and creative thinking. The arts teaches scholars how to express themselves, how to work with others, how to think outside the box and discipline.

When arts is taken out of the school, students lose a critical component of a well-balanced education. I am 100 % for rigorous academics, but I am also an advocate for schools producing scholars who possess 21st century skills, or what most people know as softskills. Scholars of today must be prepared to create jobs and pathways for themselves. When the arts are combined with academics, scholars learn how to be thinkers and problem solvers who will confidently take on the world.

6. It’s no secret that the thing that haunts Bibb County development more than just

about anything is our school systems. Is there a way to fix this perception?

Yes, everyone is responsible for educating scholars.

If the entire community comes together and shares all the great things happening in all the schools, this definitely helps.

7. Describe your favorite color to someone who is blind.

The color is full of happiness and joy. It is bright, colorful and exudes the warmth of the sun. When you are having a great day or feeling excited, this is what this color represents. This is the color of spring.

8. Where do you see The Dream Academy in 10 years? I believe that in 10 years from now, DREAM Academy will be a prestigious, model school in regards to arts integrated instruction on a state and national level. We will have art scholars who are in college and perhaps even touring the world! The best is yet to come.

9. What’s the best thing you’ve heard about Macon? The people. The music. The arts. The overall culture!

10. Would you rather fight a Horse Sized Duck or 100 Duck Sized Horses?

Lol! If I had a choice, I would rather fight 100 duck sized horses. I do not think I want to take on a huge duck.

11. What’s your Favorite Otis Redding song?

My favorite song is “Try a Little Tenderness”. The message still holds true today.

Pretoria Fields Brewery is a phenomenal, brand-new brewery out of Albany, Ga. Whenever I try out a new brewery, I always start with my favorite: an IPA. Let me tell you-- Pretoria’s “Shoalie” IPA is excellent. Brewed with El Dorado hops with hints of melon and other fruit, this is a perfect warm weather IPA. Not too hoppy and not too filling, this is a beer you can kick back and relax with at a party, take with you floating down the river, or just enjoy with a nice dinner. Do yourself a favor and grab a Shoalie when you can. It is now available at a variety of bars and restaurants in Macon.

I’ve got a younger buddy that always tips me off to cool older stuff in the power pop vein. Much of it becomes permanent listening for me, so when he recommends I listen.

I was really digging the song, “Hanging on The Telephone” (probably listening to it for the 10th time in a row) when my wife came in and said, “Hey, they’re doing a Blondie cover.” It turns out that Blondie was doing a Nerves cover, and had a top five hit with it in the UK. I discovered that other bands have also covered The Nerves’ songs with success. I don’t need the world to vindicate my taste, but to me that indicates that these guys were doing it right in more than just one person’s opinion. It turns out that The Nerves were a super group before anyone in the band had become super. The three-piece outfit from Los Angeles consisted of Jack Lee on guitar, Paul Collins (later of The Beat) on drums and Peter Case (later of The Plimsouls) on bass. One Way Ticket encompasses the band’s entire catalogue but is not an “album” in the traditional sense because it wasn’t released during the bands lifetime (which was tragically short, from ’74 to ’78). This compilation, released by Alive Records in 2008, contains a remastered version of The Nerves’ only original EP (self-titled) along with some demos and other previously unreleased material. It’s power pop in its pure, rawest form. The sound simple, kinda sparse, and perfect. The songs are all catchy and all over too soon, most clocking in at less than two minutes. You will doubtless spend many more than that on repeat listening. It is that dang good.

One of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time is the Netflix original, Wild Wild Country.

Directed by filmmaking brothers Chapman and Maclain Way, the docu-series chronicles the followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, an Indian guru who advocated free love and radical meditation to cultivate an intense following in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. From the group moving to Oregon and attempting to take over the town, to the thousands of homeless people they bussed in to the compound, this film grabs your attention and does not let go. You even had the founder of Nike and the ex-wife of The Godfather producer Albert S. Ruddy involved with this guy! I’m telling you, once you start-- just buckle in, and hold on. It’s one hell of a ride.

INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tablespoon fine sugar 2 teaspoons sesame oil 1 teaspoon soy sauce 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger 1 beef rump steak or sirloin cap (butterflied) 1 pkt grape tomatoes, quartered 1 continental cucumber, halved lengthways 1 red onion, halved, cut into thin wedges 2 bell peppers (your choice of colors) 1 bunch fresh Thai basil, leaves picked, torn 1/3 cup toasted peanuts, coarsely chopped Sesame seeds for garnish 4 limes, quartered In large mixing bowl, combine lime juice, garlic, sugar, sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, reserve 4-5 tblsp for topping- marinate beef in this at room temperature for 30minutes to an hour. On grill, grill meat to desired preference. Allow to rest for 15 minutes before slicing very thinly. Place in large zip lock bag and pour reserved marinate onto beef and allow to chill in the fridge until serving. Serve with thinly sliced Thai basil, chopped peppers, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, red onion, top with peanuts and sesame seeds with a squirt of fresh lime.

Not My Easter!

Easter... a magical holiday where pagan symbolism is honored through allowing an egg-hiding, candy-delivering rabbit to break into our homes. Pastel colors are really important as well. And the story about that Middle Eastern guy being tortured, murdered, then coming back to life is thrown into the mix, because at this point-- why the hell not? It might be the very strangest holiday celebrated on such a large scale.

But I think it’s time we examine our system, and the traditions we continue to ingrain in our children’s’ lives. Too many kids today are spoiled and entitled, and everybody knows it’s all because we’re too soft on them when they’re in those fragile, early developmental years. When I was a kid, you could get your ass beat by a grown up... and things had to have been better then because I was there, and look how good I turned out. But I’m afraid our Easter traditions are reinforcing these namby-pamby attitudes.

Over the holiday, I went to an egg hunt where kids were actually sectioned off according to age, and the people tried to ensure each child was able to find an egg. Excuse me? How is that going to prepare these children for the real world? Life isn’t some springtime holiday in the park. So, I propose we change the rules.

Some eggs have candy, while others are full of dirt or mud. Maybe one special egg has some money in it, and one identical egg has a small venomous snake inside.

We can celebrate all our jumbled culture’s histories

without having to sacrifice our kids’ futures the way they sacrificed that peace-loving Jesus man.

In a way, these egg hunts are a lot like participation trophy ceremonies. Both become devoid of meaning through rote consistency. My boys have gotten so many trophies that I have had to rent a temperature-controlled storage space just to have somewhere to put all of them. Just the other day, as we were getting into our minivan after dinner, a strange man appeared out of the shadows and tried to give each of my children a “cutest kids in the parking lot trophy,” whatever the heck that is.

He said it was behind the dumpster and that their mother and I had to wait by the car, which seemed unusual, but they have so many trophies already I had to tell him no thanks. I’m not sure he was even a part of any legitimate trophy distributing organization, to be honest.

Things are clearly out of hand, and there’s more at stake than which kind of Cadbury eggs you get in your basket. Because it isn’t about the rich milk chocolate shell... What matters is the crème filling inside us.

Agitators, auteurs, curators, and chroniclers-- Luther & Cody Dickinson are their father’s sons and children of the hill country. As the North Mississippi Allstars, the Dickinson’s take blues tradition and amplify it ANgenerations.

INTERVIEW WITH for the world and future For them, it’s not just about homage or preservation-- it’s also about moving the blues forward, onward.

Recently, the Dickinsons released the EP Blues Dance Music, an ultra-modern remix of selections from 2017’s excellent Prayer For Peace album-- a curious project to be sure. Luther Dickinson had a few minutes to talk about the new electronic EP, the secret of Sun Records, and the true legacy of the blues. And kids, rarely have I enjoyed a conversation more.

Can we call Blues Dance Music an annex of Prayer For Peace?

Definitely. You know, we recorded the record as we always do-- live and loose, and sloppy, and just full of blood and guts... and we recorded it on the run, on the road. And then my brother... took the record and did a remix-- like any proper, modern producer/DJ would!

He learned this music program called Ableton, which is a modern, very creative music program and workflow... and he took our music and just ran with it, man!

And it’s great because it’s totally modern, but to my tastes. I stand behind it 100%. I didn’t do a thing except write the songs, play guitar, and sing. Cody took it and just ran with it!

Have you considered doing a full-length project of new material using that same dynamic?

Yeah, maybe so. It all depends on what inspires Cody.

With our last record, World Boogie Is Coming, he was into making films, and he made four great videos, and musical films, and a whole live concert film-- and he just really ran with it! And it helped that record, World Boogie Is Coming... really helped it splash and have it’s own life. And this time-- he’s inspired by making elec-

Now, I love Sun Records... I love the guerilla recording philosophy of Sam Phillips, that experimental spirit that Roland Janes and Jack Clement had... I can only imagine that a lot of that material that ya’ll recorded for that album were like nursery rhymes growin’ up... You were talkin’ about your style, and how you go into makin’ a record-- so, was there any prep for that album whatsoever, or did you just plug in, push tronic music! And the think about us is, what we do record and go? with North Mississippi is only what he and I can do to- Well, the fun thing was, that record... ok, so in gether, you know? I can’t predict or steer him in any Memphis... if you’re gonna work at Sun studios, you direction. He does what he does, and I do what I do. can only work after 6(pm)! Because it’s a museum, It’s a real funny thing, but it’s a healthy work-flow for you know? They have people runnin’ in and out all brothers. And it’s kinda... I got kids, and I try’n tell my day-- so, there’s a parameter, right? But then we kids what’s right and wrong... and I don’t think it’s right also wanted to record at Sam Phillips Recording... for people to tell other people what to do, you know You know, in 1959 Sam sold Sun, and he moved what I mean? Of course, we have to abide by the basic and built Sam Phillips Recording, which has relaws of humanity-- but I’m not into anybody tellin’ any- mained like a time machine ever since! That’s truly amazing. I had never considered that.

It’s not easy. It’s a lost art.

he kept that studio open his whole life... and Sam’s granddaughter, Halley Phillips, she really has taken charge,,, and she’s got the fire, man! She’s got the spunk!

I didn’t know that!

Yeah! And she’s takin’ charge-- and, man, that studio has really still got the Phillips fire! Halley’s a very powerful person... So, it was fun workin’ in both historical spots, then workin’ at Sun was a real codebreaker for me. Ok... the key to workin’ at Sun is you have to play quiet. That music, be it Howlin’ Wolf or Elvis-- they were playin’ quiet. They didn’t have head phones!

They were all playing at the level... with such intensity, but at the level of the vocals-- which is a lost art!

Nobody can do that anymore, you know? If you go in there and play loud (like we all do now), it doesn’t sound good. Not at old Sun. But, man, we opened the doors... I won’t tell all my secrets, but we recorded in Sun in a new way and utilized the whole space... and got a REAL exciting sound! It was very exciting for me! I’ve experienced goin’ into Sun and people playin’ too loud-- and bein’ disappointed. Man, that’s not what it’s ‘sposed to sound like, you know!

That’s interesting... cause I listen to a lot, A LOT of records recorded there, and that’s not somethin’ I’ve ever considered...

There’s a film... Check it out, this is what turned me on-- there’s a film of Howlin’ Wolf. You know they made the German films? It’s called the American Folk Festival, and every year the bluesmen would go to Europe and do proper, legit concerts in all the theatres in Europe and the UK... And you know what Robert Plant said? That every year, he and Page, and Clapton, and Beck and all of ‘em... they would go and watch the masters!

Yeah, I just showed my daughter the one from Howlin’ Wolf! Right, right! Exactly! There’s the one where he’s sittin’... it’s like a storefront set... and there’s the saxophone and a piano, and he and Hubert are plugged into the same amp... Well, this is what broke the code for me: Howlin’ Wolf counted the song off, stomped his foot four times, and then the band kicked in. Well, they were playin’ so quiet that not only could you hear his voice, you could stillhear his foot! You know, granted, it was Howlin’ Wolf... his foot’s like a yard long! But I was like, “Oh my God, all that music is quiet!” It’s quiet

Speaking of lost arts... There is a particular aspect of preservation when it comes to what you and Cody do with the North Mississippi Allstars. The hill country blues that you’ve come to embody... but you’ve also worked to expand what the genre can do. It’s 2018. Is there still room for innovation in blues music? Oh, yeah. Has to. It was always there, and it has to to stay alive, you know? I think a common misconception is that blues music was ever tryin’ to be “old-timey” in the first place. I mean... nobody was tryin’ to be old-fashion. Charlie Patton was a pioneer! Howlin’ Wolf was a pioneer! Robert Johnson went in that studio and sang those songs, man...

He was singin’ into the future! Muddy Waters was not tryin to be old-fashion, you know? It’s insulting to the history... to look at it that way. There’s nothin’ wrong with tryin’ to play and make it sound old-timey but don’t think that’s what they were doin’. That’s what I’m tryin’ to say. To keep it alive... the thing about it is... here’s the truth of the matter: I can’t help it. When I play... when Cody and I play together-- it just sounds modern, you know? That’s just what we do! It turns into rock n’ roll, and that’s ok-- but what needs to be protected is the repertoire. That’s what I believe. The trappings, the rhythms, and the sounds, and the bells & whistles... They can come and go, but what needs to be protected is the repertoire-- the poetry and the melody. If you look at the American roots music as a fine art form... it’s really young. It’s a very young art form in the big picture, and it has to be protected. It’s an important part of our history and culture... and that’s what I owe to my father, who was a song collector and taught me his repertoire; to RL Burnside, who was a genius with words and taught me his repertoire... and carryin’ it on and makin’ it your own is the appropriate way of participating in the oral tradition.

Ahead of his appearance at the Hargray Capitol Theatre on April 24th, Wes Griffith invited Sam to discuss Americana, his influences, and his evolution as an artist. | By Wes Griffith Thanks for sending me an advance copy of Concrete and Mud. You are one of our favorite discoveries here at 11th Hour and 100.9 The Creek this year. I’ve been listening to all of your music, and this new record has a different quality about it. It has a little more attitude and energy about it. I feel some Southern Rock influence in there and some Waylon Jennings-type swagger, and even some roots rock vibes that make me think of The Band. Tell me about your approach to this album.

I approached this album much differently than the last. I wanted to make music that people can bob their heads to and dance too rather than the sorta sadder stuff of my old records. I really dug into my influences a lot deeper. The Band and Waylon being some of them, but also Little Feat, Skynyrd, and many more. I focused a lot on groove on this record, and I think it shows.

You currently hail from California. There seems to be a burgeoning country music scene there with some great new artists like Sam Outlaw, Jamie Wyatt, Jade Jackson and Elijah Ocean. What’s that scene like?

The scene in California is really growing. There are so many great artists out here that I respect and its small enough still to have a family sort of vibe.

The Grand Ole Echo is to thank for a lot of the scene development out here, and it just keep growing and getting better.

Did you grow up in California? Tell me about your musical influences growing up.

I actually grew up in Texas. One of my favorite bands growing up and still is ZZ Top. They are Houston guys just like me. I honestly avoided country music till about 10 years ago just because I had this punk rock kinda attitude. Country is of

course very big in Texas and the South, so I always wanted to go against the grain. Once I found Americana and Country music, I couldn’t resist, and there was no going back.

You got sober just before releasing your first 2 albums. How has that process informed/affected your work? Getting sober really influenced my writing a lot and made me a lot more mature as a person and an artist. When I was out drinking, I basically used being a musician as an excuse to not have a real job. Now that I am sober, I'm much more focused and involved in my career.

Have you ever been to Macon? We have several musical giants that have come out of this town. Any of those artist have a profound effect on you?

I’ve never been to Macon. I’d say my biggest influence from there is The Allman Brothers. I’m really excited to come for the show and check out the city.

What are your thoughts on the Americana scene these days? Do you like being lumped in to that category?

I think the Americana scene is great. It lends a community for artists making good American music that maybe isn’t so mainstream. I make the music I make, and I don't really feel a need to label it, but I like what the Americana Music Association has done for artists like me by giving them a spotlight.

What can we expect to see when you take the stage on 4/24 to open for Shinyribs at The Hargray Capitol Theatre?

A kick-ass rock n' roll show.

The Tree of Forgiveness

I’ll never forget the first time I listened to John Prine’s self-titled debut from 1970. There were illegal smiles, ears inside the walls, a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes, and an angel from Montgomery. Prine told me to blow up my TV, throw away my paper, go to the country, and build me a home. I was hooked…mesmerized and amused by Prine’s unique wit – sly, casual, but also poignant and at times caustic in its social commentary…melancholy and whimsical at the same time. And for every comedy of errors, he also offered up a tragedy.

Prine has masterfully maintained this complex wit for 5 decades now. And The Tree of Forgiveness finds him no worse for the wear. Producer Dave Cobb steers the ship here as Prine offers up 10 originals with a cast of co-writers and some help from Brandi Carlile (background vocals).

Cobb handles guitar on several tracks, and Mike Webb’s piano and organ contributions are especially noteworthy.

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires pitch in on the last two tracks, “God Only Knows” and “When I Get to Heaven.” The latter may steal the show here as Prine tells us what he would do when he gets to Heaven: “I’m gonna get a cocktail / vodka and ginger ale / I’m gonna smoke a cigarette that’s nine miles long / I’m gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl / cause this old man is goin to town.”

The opening track “Knockin on Your Screen Door” is another feel good number. However, my favorite track is “The Lonesome Friends of Science,” who say the “world will end most any day,” though Prine doesn’t care because he “doesn’t live here anyway.” He lives “down deep inside [his] head / where long ago [he] made [his] bed.” Prine goes on to tell us that Pluto never stood a chance “when he got uninvited to / the interplanetary dance.” Now he is hanging out in Hollywood “in some old funky sushi bar.”

As if that’s not enough, “The Vulcan lives in Birmingham….his pride hangs down below his knees / Venus left him long ago / for a guy named Mars from Idaho / The Vulcan sent a wedding gift / a three legged stool and a wheelchair lift.”

In classic Prine fashion, the innuendo, irony and tongue-in-cheek wit wraps around this album like kudzu.

And while we find Prine, obviously entering his twilight years, dealing with death, dying, God and the afterlife a bit more than in the past, he undoubtedly does so with the same ease and stoic wit that all Prine fans have come to know and love.

Anderson East

When you think of Americana music, one of the most relevant artists that come to mind is Anderson

East-- just don’t label him as only an Americana artist. From his gospel roots to his love of Aesop Rock, Anderson East is a once-in-a-generation musician who melds everything we love about classic records and takes it to the next level. Anderson took some time to talk to us about growing up in Athens (Alabama, that is), the reason he named his latest album Encore, and the prevailing thought that drives his quest to create great music. With this latest album Encore...this makes the second album that you have worked with Dave Cobb, a legendary producer with a really big reputation of creating this very soul-filled music. With Delilah, were you going in that direction with the album as a concept or was it something that Dave did to guide you towards that?

To speak to his credit, I think there may be some kind of aesthetic in mind. But really, we just strip it down to what the song is in its essence and try to just provide service for the song, and let it speak for itself. For Delilah at least, it was a lot of songs that we recorded-- and once we had our theme, we were able to see where the actual record is. As much as we might be enjoying these other songs, this is the narrative that fits for this record. For Encore, we had the concept pretty early on. The title of this one comes from where I expressed to him that I wanted every song to be able to be played as an encore, and I wanted each song to first be able to hold up and have that importance, but also sonically... to be able to get to that place.

What’s the one piece of advice or knowledge that Dave has said that you can always keep in the back of your head?

I don’t really know if it’s a piece of advice. It’s more of an action, and it’s knowing when to stop. A lot of people want to dress things up, and be perfect. I think that’s the entire goal of making some piece of music, especially as the artist. You want what you do to be flawless, and the best thing that I’ve ever learned from him is that those ugly parts are the human parts. And that’s what continues to draw at least myself and him included, to make great records.

It’s that part of the human vulnerability. And to try to extinguish that, you’re turning into a computer .

The range that the album goes through is incredible from “Girlfriend” with this raucous feel to it to “House Is Not A Building” that has the gospel influence that comes through. But the one song on the album that I am mostly enamored with is the last song on the album, “Cabinet Door”.

I’ve had that song for quite a while. We actually recorded that for part of Delilah but it just didn’t fit that narrative from what that record actually was. Every now and again, throughout the past couple years, I’ve snuck it in live in some places. It just means a whole lot to me. You know, every line is not like a true occurrence, but it’s an amalgamation of a lot of my entire family. Still to this day, my grandparents sit around watching the Braves games. It’s kind of a song for everybody all at once, and it also reminds me about being thankful and being grateful for the people that you have around you that you love.

to me. And yeah, I’m far more attracted to making classic records and classic sounding records because it’s human, you know? And I like that. Again, it goes back to that vulnerability. We don’t autotune things on these records. A computer is used to store it, not to really manipulate it. I want to make timeless records. There’s a reason “Hammer pants” went out, and blue jeans are still around. You can’t mess with timeless and classic, but with that being said... I still want to make music that’s relevant in 2018 and 2019.

Ok. Here are just a couple of rapid fire questions...

You mentioned the Atlanta Braves in the song “Cabinet Door”. So, I’m guessing you have seen a few games in your life. Best Braves pitcher of all time: Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, or Tom Glavine?

I’m going to have to go with Greg.

I can’t disagree with you there. I would have also In this Americana genre, there seems to be a soul accepted Steve Avery as well. Not a lot of people revival of sorts going on. Now, I am nowhere know about that guy. Number two: Best hip hop near the singer you are, but I do sing, and I feel artist you’ve ever listened to? like sometimes I get placed, or in better terms, Ooh, that’s tough... Mos Def is up there. Common is pigeon-hold into the soul genre. I sometimes feels up there for me. I was always a big fan of the Rhymelike it’s hard to pay homage to the legends like Otis sayer group where it was Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Redding, Sam Cooke and Al Green while also creAesop Rock. I really liked all that stuff. Just a lot of ating something fresh and new. Is that something the positive hip-hop out there. Talib Kweli too. I that you deal with when you’re in the midst of your could talk all day about that. songwriting, when you’re writing stuff for yourself or for others?

Last but not least, if it was not music You know, there are a lot of opinions that you were doing, what else Anout there. I think the only one that derson East be doing with his life? I’d Anderson matters is your own. If people like soul probably be cutting glass. (laughing) East music, and they want to call me a soul I’m dead serious man. I’d either be cutsinger, then do it. Our cats are pulled from local animal control facilities and pampered in a homelike environment while they wait for their forever homes. All of our kitties roam free in our shelter. They are able to play, eat, and lounge as they please! Kitty City’s $100 adoption fee covers spay/neuter, combo testing for FeLV and FIV, and vaccinations.

We always need volunteers to help us clean the shelter and take care of our cats. We are also looking for people who would like to work in our ‘Kitty Clinic’, medicating sick or injured cats at the shelter.

WHY IS MY PET ITCHING?

> Usually it is allergies, which affect pets just as much as their owners. Excessive quantities of pollen combined with the start of flea and tick season combine to cause ear infections, itching, scratching, hair loss and pyodema or skin infections. Veterinarians now have several great new treatment options including immunotherapy that can resolve or significantly decrease the symptoms for your pet.

In Georgia we recommend using flea and tick medicine year round as we still see these pesky creatures even in the middle of winter. Having said that the main flea and tick season usually runs March through September in Middle Georgia. If you can start using your preventatives at least by the end of February and continue into October you will cover the worst of the season.

If your product stops working we recommend you contact your veterinarian for advice for your pet. We now have many oral products available that may be indicated if your topical is not effective. Some products have age and breeding specifications as well as some medical limitations. Always talk to your veterinarian first.
