The story is just getting started.
A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. Shannon and Lisa Harris love Macon,
and they want to make sure everyone else knows just how special the city is too. Shannon is originally from here, and Lisa has called it her home since they got married in 1993. They’re firm believers in “go local, buy local,” a motto that is intertwined into many aspects of their lives. “We’ve always been big supporters of Macon to help grow it and make it that shiny city on the hill,” Shannon Harris said. Two of the couple’s biggest ventures are Macon Octoberfest, being hosted for the third time from Oct. 23-25, and the L.H. Harris Ecology Center, a nonprofit they founded two years ago.
FOR THE LOVE OF MACON A weekend of Southern Music and Georgia Craft Beers!
BY ANDREA HONAKER
Octoberfest Macon Octoberfest was inspired by a private, one-night
event held in 2012 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the couple’s company, Alpine Adventure Trails Tours. Shannon and Lisa Harris spend June through September each year taking participants on guided hiking trips through the Swiss Alps. “I always ended up the hiking season in Munich, at the Octoberfest,” Shannon Harris said. “That’s in Bavaria, a state just like Georgia. They always premiere their beer, culture. We wanted to substitute Munich for Georgia.” That gathering was so successful that they decided to create a multi-day, public festival to benefit local charities in 2013. The event moved from Cherry Street Plaza to Tattnall Square Park in 2014, drawing about 4,700 people. Shannon Harris hopes 7,000 to 10,000 people will come out this year, with the turnout expected to increase from a partnership with Mercer University during its homecoming weekend. The event will feature about 80 Georgia craft beers and nearly 20 participating breweries, coordinated by Thomas Reichert. Macon Beer Company is one of those breweries, and guests will be able to sample two to three of its brews, including a new light pumpkin ale called Macon Bears, said company president Jeremy Knowles. Macon Beer has participated in Octoberfest since 2013, when it released its flagship beer at the event. “Macon Octoberfest highlights Georgia beers and Georgia beers only,” Knowles said. “I think that’s really important to the Georgia beer movement, and I think it’s important that we have that support. [Shannon and Lisa Harris] have taken a stance on local food, local beer. I think it shows a lot of character and integrity and principal in what they’re trying to accomplish.” There will also be a kids’ area, a game/activity area, Bavarian food by Grow restaurant and live music. Thirteen Southern music acts are scheduled to appear, lined up by Rock Candy Entertainment Group founders Jamie Weatherford and Sean Pritchard.
“A lot of people think of it as a beer festival, but it’s so much more. It’s a festival that celebrates Macon’s music history,” Knowles said. Artists include headliner Craig Campbell, Reptar, Empire Strikes Brass, Dalmatian, Cicada Rhythm, Susto and The Sweeplings. Friday is country music night, Saturday is devoted to rock and roll, and Sunday will have an Americana/acoustic vibe, said Weatherford, who was recruited to book the Octoberfest entertainment because of his past association with Bragg Jam.
Giving Back
Macon Octoberfest
All of the proceeds from Octoberfest will go to area nonprofits, with the three main benefactors being the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, All About Animals Rescue and the L.H. Harris Ecology Center. “Every year, we just strive to have more people and to excite the community and bring awareness to these causes and try to create something that’s unique for this area,” Weatherford said. This will be the third year that the Alzheimer’s Association has participated in Macon Octoberfest. The Harrises reached out to the Georgia chapter because of their personal connection with the disease: Shannon Harris’ grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s. “These people, they don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk. Their whole purpose for being is giving back,” said Karen Kinsler, director of relationship events with the Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter. “There’s just not a lot of people that would start that kind of venture just to help other people.” Kinsler said about 100 volunteers from the organization will help run the beer garden during the weekend. They’re also providing a dunking booth with surprise celebrity participants, and helping to bring in arts and crafts vendors and other nonprofits who will set up informational booths. “They are amazing what they do to help support the folks here in middle Georgia,” Lisa Shannon said of the

VIP tickets available for $40 upgrade. Additional cost for beer sampling. Want to learn more? Macon Octoberfest – maconoctoberfest.com L.H. Harris Ecology Center – lhharris.com Alzheimer’s Association. “With so many people that are struggling with this disease … it’s really important that we can continue to help.” All About Animals Rescue will have dogs on site available for adoption, and will be accepting donations for items like T-shirts, baked goods and dog toys, said volunteer Lacey Templeton. The nonprofit, whose mission is to end the homeless and stray pet population, will also be hosting a pet costume contest and wiener dog races. Lisa and Shannon Harris want to eventually expand the festival to four or five days and turn it into a premier regional Octoberfest event. They also hope to connect with other charitable organizations that could participate in 2016. “Macon has always been in need of a really good fall festival, and Shannon and Lisa are really passionate about this. They put their heart and soul into this,” Weatherford said. “I think it’s already known as a top-tier festival in central Georgia, and I’m excited to see how it continues to grow.”
Ecology Center
The purpose of the ecology center, located on a 22-acre farm by Lake Tobesofkee, is to economically benefit and positively impact Central Georgia through local projects. The couple grows fruits and vegetables there to sell. With the help of Shannon Harris’ sister Heather Edge, who’s been involved in Octoberfest since the beginning and makes all of the event décor, they also sell woodworking items and reclaimed-wood furniture that they’ve made. All these proceeds go toward the Ecology Center’s causes, Shannon Harris said. The Harrises have purchased a home downtown on Second Street, the first of several planned for their “urban garden hub.” Once renovations to the house are complete, a tenant family will grow and manage a garden there and sell the produce locally to keep money in the community. The couple has also started construction on a dog park at the farm, which they hope to open next October. They will be working with All About Animals Rescue and other animal groups in Bibb and surrounding counties to provide a free place where rescue dogs and dogs being fostered can have some time away from their kennels, Shannon Harris said. The pair has five dogs, two cats and are fostering three additional dogs, and Lisa Harris said they’re “just trying to be a part of the solution.” 11thHourOnline.com 11
Music Schedule Macon’s Octoberfest returns for a third year, and this time around, it features the festival’s best music lineup to date. In the midst of a large collection of craft breweries and long tables full of Bavarian cuisine, the MAIN STAGE and the BIER GARDEN STAGE will feature non-stop musical entertainment to help encourage copious amounts of stein raising and oom-pah dancing. BY JARED WRIGHT
Essential to those activities will be the Atlanta German Polka Band, which will play multiple sets throughout the weekend on the BIER GARDEN STAGE. The band is led by tuba player Laurence Laurentz, who sees the band as a medium to celebrate his German heritage. They’ve been around the world, taking American jazz to Europe and bringing back the beer-hall experience to the good ol’ U.S.A. This weekend, they’ll be bringing it back to Macon for Octoberfest. Friday night’s MAIN STAGE schedule starts the festival off on the country side of things, with sets by Craig Campbell and Jeff Allen. Texas-born Allen is a singer-songwriter with an ability to balance outlaw attitude and mainstream country polish. He’s written songs with some of the best in the country music hit factory, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know how to rock ‘n’ roll, listing artists from the Black Crowes to Bob Seger among his many influences. Campbell, who has spent time as a keyboardist in the backing bands of both Tracy Byrd and Luke Bryan, found success of his own with the release of his self-titled debut in 2011 and a sound reminiscent of the glory days of 1990s country made by superstars like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Clint Black and Travis Tritt.
new rock and roll scene that’s taking over Country Music, U.S.A. Their latest album, Being There, shifts effortlessly from piano ballads to throwback soul to glam punk. A few members of Clear Plastic Masks also recently collaborated with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard on her Thunderbitch solo project, a product of Nashville’s burgeoning scene.
----------------
The MAIN STAGE will be closed down by Athens-based Reptar, who named their band after a dinosaur from Rugrats, because they claim it’s the “second stupidest band name they could think of.” They’ve become notorious around Athens, GA for their live shows, which is no small feat in a scene like that of the Classic City, where bands sprout up like kudzu on a South Georgia highway. Their influenced by anything from post-punk to highlife and obviously take cues from the herky-jerky loopiness of blog buzz bands like Passion Pit and Animal Collective.
Kicking off Saturday’s festivities on the MAIN STAGE will be Atlanta’s Brother Hawk. The band plays the type of straightforward, blues-and-soul-based rock and roll that makes you swear you’ve heard it somewhere before. Their songs are rooted in a respect of past musicians like the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin and Neil Young, but they certainly aren’t stuck there. Brother Hawk uses those artists as springboards to something more progressive and contemporary a la the Southern-tinged sounds of bands like My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses, writing tight songs that also leave room to jam. Macon’s own Dalmatian takes the stage next. Rumor has it they have a brand-new EP in the works and we can only hope they be debuting some new material. Any way you shake it, these guys always put on a great show. Their music alternates between strummy folky-ness with sweet harmonies to sugary sweet pop backed with jerky, clean guitars. Sometimes there’s a bitchin’ guitar solo. Sometimes there’s a banjo. Sometimes it’s all that at once. Fun indeed. Clear Plastic Masks is a band that formed in Brooklyn and now calls Nashville home. The band’s members come from all over the country, making their style a bit ambiguous and their influences hard to pin down, which isn’t at all a bad thing.. They might best be described as exemplars of a 12 OCT. 23 - NOV. 6, 2015
Empire Strikes Brass, a favorite from the past several years of Bragg Jam, is comprised of members of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, and Big Ol’ Nasty Get Down. In short, these guys bring the funky jams with the force of the Force in a manner that would inspire Yoda to break dance. If they happen to play “Yub Nub” (the Ewok celebration song from Return of the Jedi) in the style of an oom-pah band, I’m gonna lose my shit.
few shows. Last year, they were chosen from almost 3,000 artists for inclusion in the top 12 on VH1’s Make A Band Famous. ---------------Sunday’s MAIN STAGE gets going nice and easy with another (acoustic) set from Dalmatian, followed by Charleston’s SUSTO, who plays the type of music well-suited for restless hearts, long nights and those with perpetually itchy feet. Though they may wander, SUSTO’s songs are firmly rooted in the South, and the often-daunting mystique of the region takes the forefront as subject matter. The result is hauntingly beautiful alt-country that tells tales of backwoods gospel, Black Jesus, demons and love - spiritual, secular, doomed or delivering.
JEFF ALLEN FRIDAY NIGHT
EMPIRE STRIKES BRASS TAKES THE STAGE SATURDAY NIGHT
Cicada Rhythm takes the stage next. The band is a duo comprised of guitarist Dave Kirslis and bassist Andrea DeMarcus. She’s a Julliard-trained bassist, and he’s a train-hopping fingerpicker. The two were brought together seemingly by fate in Athens, GA, and their distinct backgrounds combine beautifully to create a deceptively simple style rich in harmony and rooted in traditional styles. NPR Music recently described their debut album as “roots music that’s unassuming, expertly played and sung by two clear as glass voices.” Closing out the musical festivities for the weekend will be another duo, the Sweeplings. How’s this for an origin story? The first time Whitney Dean saw his future bandmate Cami Bradley, he was sitting in his living room watching her on America’s Got Talent, looking for a new musical project fresh off the heels of a run with the Civil Wars. Emails were exchanged, chemistry ensued and the songs started to flow. Eventually, the songwriting partnership grew into a full-time folk pop project. Their strings and piano driven sound seems like the perfect way to wrap up a weekend of music on a relaxing Sunday evening.
Saturday’s BIER GARDEN STAGE will be occupied by two Macon favorites: Tash & The Boys and Good Night Alive. According to Tash & the Boys, their modus operandi THE SWEEPLINGS CLOSE THE FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY So strap on your lederhosen, swill is to combine two distinct styles some craft beer and eat some Southern Rock and surf rock. Their pretzels and sausage, all while enjoying this diverse musical music is full of guitar hooks and simple melodies a la Kings of Leon and the Strokes. Good Night Alive describes lineup. Octoberfest is quickly becoming one of Macon’s not-to-be-missed events, and this year’s musical entertainthemselves as “indie electronic rock,” and they’re making ment is helping to propel it there. quick progress on the local and national level after only a

Mama Hill and Mama Louise have kept Macon’s most diverse clientele well fed with delicious, stick-to-ya-ribs soul food since Otis Redding was just an unknown band member in Johnny Jenkins’ Pinetoppers. On one fateful day in the mid-60’s a group a long hairs pooled their money together for two plates. Mama Louise felt sorry for them and gave them all a heaping helping. A friendship between her and The Allman Brothers Band was born. A friendship that took her on quite a ride that included a seat on the tour bus in 1972 and lifelong friendships with Gregg and the rest of the band. In 2007, Mama Hill passed on, but Mama Louise kept on keepin’ on. She calls us every other day, saying “y’all ready yet! I’m ready to go back to work.” To which we reply, “We’re almost there Mama.”

JUST TAP’D
An Authentic Pub: Craft Beer, Artisan Pizza & Bavarian Brats By Nicole Thurston Jeff & Beth Kressin know a good idea when they see one. When the military moved Jeff and his family to Central Georgia, he and his wife knew they wanted to start a new business, but finding the right fit was going to be a challenge. That is, until a good friend of Jeff ’s invited him to Atlanta to tour some growler spots. Like most people, the term growler is a fairly new concept, especially when you take into consideration that growlers have only been legal to sell in Georgia for five years. Jeff says he and his friends began touring various breweries, which led to his new found appreciation for craft beer. That appreciation turned into a bit of competition with experimenting with home brews with friends. Finally, it hit him – what Central Georgia needed was a Growler store. “I have a background as an entrepreneur,” said Kressin at his Just Tap’d location in downtown Macon, “In 2012, I was not really into craft beer. Of course, I liked beer, but when I found out you could get way better tasting beer and better quality beer than traditional mainstream brewers, I thought, Wow!” The turn of the century term growler comes from when fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one’s home by means of a small-galvanized pail. Rumor has it that when the beer sloshed around the pail, it created a rumbling sound as the CO2 escaped through the lid, thus the term “growler” was coined. Today, a growler is simply a container that you can fill with fresh craft beer and take home to enjoy later. They typically look like a jug with an air tight seal. After a few weeks, Jeff and his wife purchased a space in Warner Robins. They have since sold that location to an active duty retired pilot, and that store is part of their affiliate program. It took two main people in Macon to talk them into purchasing a new space in downtown, and 14 OCT. 23 - NOV. 6, 2015
that was Alex Morrison with the Urban Development Authority and Tim Hughes with the Chamber of Commerce. Jeff credits these two with selling him the vision of how downtown was growing, and according to Jeff, was the best decision he could have made, “I started thinking, this could work. Of course, when I see an opportunity, I can usually tell pretty quickly whether or not is has potential.” But that is old news. What is new is the fact that now customers can get an authentic pub experience with European inspired food, paired perfectly with a fresh craft beer. According to Main Street Macon’s manager, Steven Fulbright, the changes and location are what downtown Macon needed, “I think it is one of the best things to happen to downtown in a long time. It’s pretty cool, it’s new, it’s innovative. It’s the perfect hang out spot.”
“It’s more than just food we are serving,” says Kressin, “If you go to England and hang out in an English pub, while they do have fish & chips, one of the other things they serve is what they call a jacketed potato.” Just Tap’d is now serving just that. Customers can order a variety of toppings, everything from fresh prosciutto, asiago, and beer cheese to caramelized onions, artichokes and brown sugar cinnamon. “Our potatoes are baked in a specialty oven that we had imported,” said Kressin, “This oven makes a really crispy outside and moist & fluffy inside.” Neapalitan Style Artisan Pizzas are also on the menu, something that they discovered on their travels. According to Jeff, to serve a proper Neapolitan pizza you have to do several things. It requires a very specific dough that contains only four ingredients and takes a 3 day fermentation process, as well as using San Marzano tomatoes. Most of the ingredients are from the Mt. Vesuvius region. No other pizza kitchen in the area is able to offer this type of pizza. Potatoes, Pizza, Pretzels, and even Brats- but not just any brat. “We wanted a Bavarian style Brat,” said Kressin, “Our brats are boiled in in a honey lager. We make in house our own mustard. We take the German mustard seed and soak it in beer for a full day, and then we finish the process that makes our artisan mustard.” As with every craft beer enthusiast, the details, location, and quality of ingredients for the food must be of the highest caliber and be paired with the right beer. Jeff says his staff is properly trained in providing a consultative experience, “We teach a little about the beer styles. The customer will learn what is the difference between a lager and an ale.” Just Tap’d is open 7 days a week. Visit http://www. justtapd.com/ to learn more.

what their ideas were around the profile, or what kind of experience they wanted to have when drinking it, or the story behind the brewing.” According to Chris, most people have a style of beer they like, but that the beauty of craft beer enthusiasts is that are still open to trying new things. One evening, Chris was sitting around with a few friends, discussing how to better share with the public the joys of craft beer. “We wanted to create a level of awareness. We had to figure out what people wanted to know, sort of give them a guide, best practices and models that were out there.” And that was the birth of Peach State Ale Trail. Peach State Ale Trail provides resources for craft beer enthusiasts by providing memberships, discounts at participating breweries, SWAG, and “trails” for day trips. However, there is one greater love that even surpasses his passion for beer and serving his community, and that is his family. Chris has a three year old son by the name of Henry. He and his wife grew up on farms and has tried to bring that experience to their son, by raising free range chickens in their backyard. Their home has become a favorite among locals to visit and is affectionately called the Backyard Farm and Resort, complete with a vintage soda machine stocked with Chris’s favorite craft beer, naturally. If you think that is quirky, check out these 11 Facts About Chris: I am a survivor of a traumatic brain injury, suffered during a fatal car accident that took the life of the at fault driver, my teacher, and significantly injured 5 teenagers and another adult on the way home from a church youth group meeting.
Chris Tsavatewa By Nicole Thurston
The legend has it, that if you meet Chris Tsavatewa for the very first time, he’ll tell you about an organization in town that is doing some great things for the community. Upon a second meeting, he’ll ask you to join. As for the third time, he’ll ask you to lead. This Macon transplant believes in his adopted community, and wants everyone to know, as he puts it, how special Macon is. “Macon has a lot of cultural enclaves. Each one of those has a unique need,” said Chris, “We must be open to the diversity and culture of each.” A subject that he knows a lot about. Chris was born in Arizona and is Hopi, a Native American Nation that occupies part of the Coconino and Navajo counties. His family traveled quite a bit as silver smiths, selling their wares at craft fairs. Eventually they would settle down in Western North Carolina among the Cherokee, and according to Chris, this shaped his view of the way he came to understand his own identity. “I had a unique cultural identity, very much because I grew up in Appalachia and having a different Native American tribe nearby, but it was not my tribe.” After a while his family made their way down to 16 OCT. 23 - NOV. 6, 2015
Fitzgerald, Georgia. There he would meet his high school sweetheart, Dallas Roper, and eventually marry. When it came time to make the move and go to college, Chris headed to Macon. “I remember coming up I 75 and seeing the Hardeman Avenue/ Mercer University sign and I thought to myself, oh my god, this is very different.” He would attend Mercer for three years before transferring to Middle Georgia State University to finish up his degree. Chris earned his Bachelor’s degree in Public Service, his Masters in Public Health, and is hoping to finish his PhD in healthcare management. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Health Administration at Middle Georgia State University and is the new Director of Experiential Learning. Outside of serving on numerous boards, including the Magnolia Street Soapbox Derby, Star Choices, Inc, and the Macon Bibb County Board of Health, this community organizer plays another role, one he takes very seriously: He is Macon’s own Craft Beer Evangelist. “I love craft beer. It tells a story- there is a story behind every beer,” explains Chris excitedly, “Either a story about how someone created the beer and

THE INTERVIEW Arts + Culture + Entertainment
“Multi-instrumentalist Jake Clayton plays his fiddle at a blistering pace for his brand new single, What Not To Do, inviting thoughts of Charlie Daniels and a devilish grin on this savvy performer’s face.”
JAKE CLAYTON is a Multi-Instrumentalist and Vocalist and quickly rising on the country charts. Although considering fiddle to be his primary instrument, Jake also plays guitar, piano, dobro, banjo, mandolin, lap steel, pedal steel, bass, and more! In total Jake plays 27 different instruments, which also includes a list of orchestral instruments such as the viola, cello, and stand-up bass. Jake Clayton has been making big splashes in Country Music over the past 8 years as a ‘utility musician’ and back-up vocalist touring with multiple Recording Artists. With those Artists, he’s toured on 3 major tours (Brad Paisley’s 2009 & 2011 tours & Gary Allan’s 2012 Country Throwdown Tour), he’s performed at The Grand Ole Opry over 30 times, he’s appeared in two Top20 Country Music videos and on various shows on GAC, CMT, RFDTV, and more. 11th Hour publisher Brad Evans caught up with Jake this past week to talk about his life in music and his upcoming show at the Crazy Bull on Halloween Night. Jake tell me how you got into playing music? I got into playing music at age 13. My parents were singers that had their own show all throughout my childhood, so music was constantly going on around me. One day my family was watching a recording of Garth Brooks Live in Central Park when I said to them that I wanted to play the fiddle like that guy in Garth’s band (Jimmy Mattingly). My older brother did what brothers do best and said “you couldn’t play that thing if ya tried”. Naturally... I had to prove him wrong!
soaked up every little piece of info I could scrounge up about them. It became an obsession! You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in Country Music. Tell me your favorite story.
What was the first song you remember learning? The first song I remember learning to play was ‘Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House’ by Garth Brooks. And You play 27 intstruments? What the hell? How does that happen? Well, you can blame the first band I was in back in Missouri. The band leader wouldn’t do any song that had instruments in it that we didn’t have in our band. There were tons of songs the singers wanted to do but because they had Banjo or any other twangy instrument in them, we couldn’t do them. That got old real quick and I decided to take matters into my own hands. I made a deal with the band leader. He would rent a different instrument every week and bring it to the show. I’d tinker with it in the time between sound check and the show. Then we would incorporate it into the show that very night. But, I didn’t just learn a few licks on each instrument and move on. I dove head first into each one and 26 OCT. 23 - NOV. 6, 2015
I was the Fiddle/Steel Guitar player for Tanya Tucker for a number of years. I hadn’t met her prior to actually playing the first show with her. We started playing her intro, and she took the stage and started singing... next thing that happens, I’m sitting at the Steel, not playing, just mesmerized by her. The drummer threw a drum stick at me to snap me back into the reality that I was a part of this show the people were watching! That is the only time that’s ever happened by the way.
What can we expect from your show at The Crazy Bull on October 31? Our shows are about bringing a ‘party’ to your area. Our music is largely up-tempo and energetic. We play music from both of my full length album releases as well as songs that have meant a lot to me over the years. We also toss in some modern radio hits as well. If you like Fiddle, Banjo, Dobro, Steel Guitar and Mandolin, we mix them all with rockin’ guitars and aggressive drumming. So come on out and spend Halloween night with us, after you’ve taken the kiddos Trick-or-Treating of course! You won’t regret it. What’s next for you? We have a new single at country radio called “What Not to Do” and we will be out playing shows and promoting that into next year. There is also a new music video for the song about to be released as well. I’m extremely excited about the video and I can’t wait to share it with all y’all. Check out Jakeclayton.com for a list of the tour dates and links to all our social sites. Hope to see ya at the show! ALBUM REVIEW “WHAT NOT TO DO” With the vocals of Garth Brooks and the driving tempo of Charlie Daniels, Jake Clayton hits the nail on the head with his new single, “What Not To Do.” With every word, this Flint, Michigan native delivers an in-depth look at life in the fast lane, giving several examples of things that no one should ever do. You will learn all about Johnny’s solution to getting cigarettes and beer, while also finding out about the scheming ways of Bernie Madoff. For some, temptation is just too much to handle, but thankfully for this artist, watching the world around him paid off. Being a huge supporter of “new” talent in Country Music, Jake Clayton has made it easy for me to be an instant fan. After mastering over thirty instruments, this talented young man can play anything with strings and keys, and his singing technique showcases his love for the classics, as well as an edge for modern radio. Jake has played with and opened for some of the heaviest hitters in the industry such as George Strait, Tanya Tucker, Sunny Sweeney, The Oak Ridge Boys and more. Nikki Lane COX CAPITOL THEATRE For her hotly anticipated sophomore album Nashville songstress Nikki Lane teamed up with Dan Auerbachof the Black Keys for a record that turns the vulnerable singer-songwriter stereotype on its ears. With songsthat crucify ex-boyfriends, celebrate one-night stands (as long as she can bolt town right after) and proclaimit’s “always the right time to do the wrong thing,” Lane comes across like a modern-era Wanda Jackson, albeitwith more oats to sow. “My songs always paint a pretty clear picture of what’s been going on in my life, so thisis one moody record,” she says. “There’s lots of talk of misbehaving and moving on.”
Amanda Daughtry CRAZY BULL Amanda has built a solid reputation of performing a vast array of current and classic country music, classic rock, and mainstream pop alongside songs of her own that she shares with those who are willing to listen. Any given night, there’s not a chance that someone walks out of the show without having a great time. Amanda’s success has been validated with opportunities to open for top country acts like Chris Young and Justin Moore.

Turnpike Troubadors w/The Black Lillies COX CAPITOL THEATRE The Troubadors are a rockin’ hard band, lashed by burnin’ fiddle and guitar, maybe a little rough on the edges but with a deep-rooted soul that’s impossible to resist. Hailed as “buzzworthy, genre-mashing roots music” by Rolling Stone Country and praised everywhere from Vanity Fair and The Wall Street Journal to CMT and Entertainment Weekly, The Black Lillies are Nashville’s new country favorites. This is going to be a great show!

Big Hairy Monster BILLY’S CLUBHOUSE Born in 2002, the founding members of BHM were tired of the standard cover band fare and wanted to produce something vastly different. The band recorded an independent album titled “VIEW” and began performing original music with select covers. A few lineup changes later, the band still performs it’s original material as well as over 100 cover tunes. Featuring some of the top musicians in middle-Georgia, you don’t want to miss the Monster! Travis Denning CRAZY BULL Being born and raised in middle Georgia, there are a few things that everyone grows up with that are an absolutely necessity. Family, friends, football and sweet tea are all a given, but Travis Denning had one: Music. I think it’s safe to say he’s stuck to it. With a powerful voice and a mature musicianship beyond his years, Travis has proven himself as a must see live performer. Travis
made the move to Nashville in January 2014 to pursue his dreams, and within the first year made great steps towards a long career in country music. In November of the same year, Travis signed his first publishing deal with RED Creative Group.
make up their southern metropolis. With a soulful back bone, a rock n’ roll attitude, and a shaky blues breakdown of heartfelt lyrics, written by John Schmarkey, these four locals, including their unique family and crew, bring out the best of Atlanta’s real image.
RadioBirds THE HUMMINGBIRD To see and hear them now, you might never believe that a few short years ago Radio Birds had a completely different lineup, look, and sound. In early 2013, rising united from their earlier musical experiences, these four young men decided to take a risk and start completely over with a new name and sound. They quickly worked up a batch of new songs, and by that summer they had recorded a successful EP and had begun playing extensively, even winning the 2013 Masquerade Musicians Showcase in Atlanta, GA. Within a year of their rechristening, they were booked for The Rock Boat 2014 (and 15!), were featured in a major motion picture (Jason Momoa’s Road to Paloma), played SXSW, and attracted the services of indie Atlanta label Brash Music. Things have moved quickly for a reason, and everyone involved points back to two causes: Radio Bird’s irresistible character and undeniably unique sound.

Whitey Morgan is an American Honky Tonk artist from Flint, Michigan. In Flint, the factories are closed, jobs are scarce and the people are bitter. Whitey Morgan sings songs these people can relate to. In much the same way his grandfather and mentor did over 3 decades ago, to a whole generation of southern transplants who came up US-23 to Flint looking for the good life.
