This issue is a big one, as you may have noticed, for the 11th Hour. Not only have we made some major changes to the look and the feel of the 11th Hour, we’ve added more pages than we ever have before. It was just before Cherry Blossom when we published issue one here in Macon. Meg and I had been hard at it in Statesboro publishing an 11th Hour there, before we moved to this city.

Our friend, Matt Weldon, helped us sell every ad in that first edition. I’ll never forget Tina Dickson at IVP was the very first person to believe in us, buying the very first ad.

There were others that issue. There had to be. We didn’t have any money and didn’t take out any loans to publish.

But we made it. We sold just enough and have been doing it ever since, hopefully making this town a better place a live for all of you.

We continued that trend with 100.9 The Creek. And though it’s still young, I keep thinking that it’s hard to imagine this place without it, and that makes me pretty proud. We focused a lot of our efforts on making this station what it has grown into. It’s not an easy task. It

takes a lot of thought and follow-through, and I’ll admit there were times when we just had to put the 11th Hour on autopilot to help make this thing real. I appreciate all the people who helped us along during that time. Mainly, my wife Meagan Evans, who tirelessly works on putting out a publication we can be proud of. Writers like Stacey Norwood, Traci Burns, Aaron Irons, and our our printing partner, Judd Publishing, have been a vital part of keeping the 11th Hour together when we needed to focus on other things.

This past January, my friend and co-hort Tony Doolin told me I needed to step up my game. He told me we needed to focus on what got us where we are in this community, the 11th Hour. So that’s what we did. We got all the great minds at Creek Media together and decided to make a change. And what you are holding is the result of that. I think the guts of this publication are as intriguing as ever. And now it’s got the looks to match. We’ve enjoyed the past 16 years of serving Middle Georgia, and are looking forward to 16 more!

GO HEAR MACON POPS “LATIN REVOLUTION” FRIDAY, MARCH 16 In an effort to further music education, Macon Pops has launched ‘For the Love of Music,’ a campaign focused on providing exposure and engagement with the musical organization. Elementary, Middle and High School students will have the opportunity to attend a Macon Pops rehearsal, talk to the musicians, learn about the production of musical concerts and how a non-profit operates and lastly, will be able to attend the concert for free. The upcoming concert will take place at Mercer’s Hawkins Arena on Friday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m. The performance is set to bring a high level of energy, excitement and Latin-inspired dance moves.

“Music education is important,” says Co-Founder of Macon Pops, Steve Moretti. “We want students to really grasp how an orchestra works leading up to a major concert.”

Macon Pops is partnering with a number of schools in the Middle Georgia region to showcase the fascinating process of an orchestral production. In addition to collaborating with ACE, Macon Pops teamed up with Central High School, First Presbyterian Day School, Stratford Academy and other educational institutions in an effort to boost music education.

Macon Pops will be giving back $2 from every ticket brought in by each school to their Fine Arts Department.

Families should mention which school they represent when contacting ticketing, or when purchasing tickets at the door.

Then you’re barreling downtown for the Cupcake Crucible challenge with Bike Tech. Cherry Blossom Parade 4-5:30pm Cherry & Mulberry Street Yes, yes! The Cherry Blossom Parade will wind through Downtown Macon and feature the Express Clydesdales, marching bands, costumed performers, and floats! Robins Air Force Base will be providing an F-15 fly-over to dazzle festival goers from all over the world, while the celebration and pageantry on the ground transforms Macon.

Charlie Daniels Band 7:30pm Macon City Auditorium The Cherry Blossom Festival is a time for big shows, and one of the biggest is the Charlie Daniels Band at the Macon City Auditorium. Charlie started out as an in-demand session player for Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen back in the 1960’s before striking out with his first solo effort in 1971. He performed as a mentor and member early on for the Marshall Tucker Band in the 1970s, and is widely regarded as pioneer in Southern Rock. He may only “tell another joke” these days, but don’t expect him to go easy.

Mulberry Street Arts & Crafts Festival Mulberry Street, 10am-6pm 10 MARCH 16-30, 2018

The oldest arts festival in Middle Georgia features hundreds of craftsman and vendors from all over the United States. It’s energetic, it’s variety, it’s more stuff than you can shake a rain stick at! You can get goat’s milk soap and deodorant, hand-made furniture, sculptures, gadgets, clothing for adults, children, pets... If they ain’t got it, you don’t need it! Lots of vendors will have card readers, but be sure to safely pack some foldin’ money that day. The Mulberry Street Arts & Crafts festival is hosted by the Middle Georgia Art Association and runs March 24th & 25th. Taking in all that art and commerce is bound to put an edge on your hunger. Luckily, you won’t have far to roam.

Food Truck Frenzy 10am-7pm Third Street Culinary excellence from the back of a truck! The Food Truck Frenzy is a real deal meal on wheels lollapalooza that happens March 24th & 25th! It’s not just “fair food” either. Remember the lobster truck?

How bout the chicken & waffles? Whether it’s on a stick or in a cup, finger lickin’ or tooth pickin’, get there early, get in line, and say, “MMM-MMMM!” Inaugural Georgia Doom Game 7-10pm Macon Coliseum $21-$38 It’s the first game of the American Arena League football season as the Georgia Doom take on the Atlanta Havoc! It’s truly an exciting time for sports fans in Central Georgia-- you’ve got baseball returning this summer, hockey, and now football! Cherry Blossom Street Party 3pm Downtown Macon on Cotton & Poplar $20 advance/$25 day of Last year, the Cherry Blossom Festival Street Party featured rock n’ roller JD McPherson, soul legend Mavis Staples, and Dr. Funkenstein George Clinton.

So, how do you follow that? By signing more funk, more soul, tossin’ in a little country, and bringing it all to boil in Downtown Macon!

First off, we’ve got David Nail. His 2016 album, Fighter, featured the Brothers Osborne as well as tracks co-written by Chris Stapleton and Lori Mckenna. The Eli Young Band formed in Denton, TX back in 2000 and released their first album in 2002.

They’ve had #1 Country hits with songs like “Crazy Girl” and “Even If It Breaks You’re Heart”. In 2017, EYB released their sixth studio album, Fingerprints,

featuring the single “Saltwater Gospel.”

What can I tell you about Chaka Kahn? She was a funk goddess with the the Chicago outfit Rufus in the 1970’s and a rap pioneer in the 1980’s with Melle Mel and the hit single “I Feel For You”. Chaka Kahn has been a collaborater and inspiration to Prince, and she’s coming to Macon!

I won’t lie-- I’m ridiculously excited about Booker T. Jones playing the street party. If my life were a movie (and at times it has certainly seemed so) the soundtrack has often been built around Booker T.’s keys and Steve Cropper’s telecaster. Booker T. is a composer, a songwriter, a Memphis and soul institution, a rock n’ roll innovator -- and I can’t wait to see him live! Check out the interview this issue

Sunday March 25th Grand Finale Glow 4-8pm Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Road Pack a snack and head over to the beautiful Wesleyan campus! Need something easy and chill to cap off your Cherry Blossom Festival? Try a tethered hot air balloon ride, or just relax and watch the dogs catch frisbees, just don’t expect to sit still when Michelle Marshall takes the stage with the Ultimate Tina Turner Tribute. Vendors will be available but feel free to take a picnic! Indeed, that could very well be a fine end to your Cherry Blossom Festival-- but there’s more!

Festival Finale Join the party and the grandest finale at Central City Park for live music with the Grapevine and a gorgeous fireworks display. Grab that last corndog or poof of cotton candy, take one more trip on the Cyclops or another go-round on the Ferris wheel!

SCULPTOR AMY McCULLOUGH OFFERS CLAY WORKSHOPS FOR AGES 6 AND UP Here’s the thing, despite the fact that I am just now hovering over the hump that is my mid-twenties and barely beginning to slide gracefully into what I can only imagine will be an equally graceful late-twenties, I am already experiencing the hangovers of someone who has hopped the hurdle of half-a-century and landed in a puddle of self-pity. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the drink, and in all its varieties. I have just had to become a little more strategic in my drinking. And while I do not mind loading up on carbs before heading out to the bar, or having to set reminders in my phone to drink water every hour, I have learned that there are other ways to spend my time and money that do not result in the porcelain-throne-hugging plaque I have come to know so well.

A few Fridays back, a group of friends and I got together to celebrate Galentine’s Day. (It’s a real, though technically unofficial holiday. Look it up.) Instead of going out and dancing until whiskey sours escaped through our pores, we arranged a private class at Macon Clay, a pottery studio here in town. Macon Clay is owned and operated by the one and only Amy McCullough. She offers classes to anyone age 6 and up.

This past August Macon Arts Alliance hosted a show that featured some of her students’ work. Unfortunately, the show took place before my friends and I had a chance to make our big debut. I know Amy would have been thrilled to include our unintentionally abstract works of art.

In all seriousness, Amy was such a warm and welcoming host, Macon Clay occupying a small corner of her breathtaking home—and I mean breathtaking. It is the kind of house that causes crotchety old men to gasp.

As awestruck as we all were, Amy was incredibly downto-earth. She was also accommodating, insisting that we make ourselves at home. Once the class began, she

was extremely thorough in her instructions, explaining everything calmly as we stared at her in terror, mortified by the possibility of making something hideous within the walls of her beautiful home. Yet somehow, Amy soothed our nerves. That, and she had allowed us to bring some wine along. I know, I know—what about all that crap I said about finding activities other than drinking? Let me just say that it would take an impressive amount of skill and multitasking, one that I do not possess, in order to get hammered while elbow deep in wet clay, especially considering the spell of oh-shit-donot-screw-this-up concentration we were all under.

The initial concept we decided on could either be a vase or a drinking vessel of any sort, sculptor’s choice.

Sounds simple enough, right? However, in order to add interest (and increased anxiety to all of us beginners) we also decided to embellish our works with smaller pieces cut to resemble crystals. Now, I have to admit that although I had originally planned on drinking coffee out of mine, by the end of the class it was impossible to imagine ever taking my piece seriously as a mug.

Thus, an abstract vase was born! According to Amy, the particular project that we chose was both functional and structural, whereas a lot of her classes usually fo-

cused on one or the other. This optimistic terminology really helped us loosen up. “Structural,” we now considered our pieces, much better than weird, random, stuck-together parts.

We laughed a lot, taking turns stepping back to squint seriously at our work, wondering when to give the poor bastard a break. We washed the caked-on clay from our hands, sipped our wine, and said things like, “Amy, what would you recommend?” And just like that, Amy came swooping in, making our misshapen messes into something less misshapen again.

If you are interested in trying something new, Amy is absolutely the person to trust with your unskilled hands. She offers two eight-week spring sessions, one every Monday from 4:30-6:30 PM from March 12th until May 7th, and another one every Wednesday from 4:30-6:30PM from March 14th until May 9th.

Both spring sessions are open to anyone age 6 and up.

An Open Letter to the Woman Who Sat Across from My Family at Dinner the Other Night

By Bo Walker Dear fellow lover of “meat and two” southern cuisine, Hello, I was the bespectacled ginger, with his wife and children, father, and grandfather, sitting at the table next to you a couple of Saturday nights ago. I could tell you were not enjoying your dinner. I’m not sure what you ordered, but if I’m being honest, I’m not sure your problem was with the food. I got the impression that we were somehow part of your problem.

You did not seem to appreciate the fact that my children value grooming and self-care. I could tell by your look of disgust when my youngest began trimming his toenails with his teeth. When my kids ventured under our table, I noticed you kicking your husband underneath your table. I’ll have you know, they were able to eat for free just by snacking on the crumbs they found beneath the booth seats—and their toenail bits, of course. I may be partially to blame as well, as I know I can get loud. I have a tendency to sing the Barenaked Ladies hit single “One Week” when I get excited. Consequently, I have a history of taking off my shirt. I could tell you didn’t care for it.

Really, it’s all about perspective. To you, it looked like my two sons were ripping open their stuffed giraffe and playing with his fluffy entrails, like a couple of humanoid hyena. What you would have known, had you been able to eavesdrop a little better, was that

ole’ Raffy had been bitten by a zombie, and he turned undead giraffe right in front of us! Now, you and I both know zombies have to be shot in the head, but these are kids. They could barely follow the plot of 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead.

You looked like a grandmother yourself, which made your constant horror even more confusing.

Maybe you consider your grandchildren more “normal,” just because they only bite their toenails in the privacy of their own home. Well, so what? I’ll put money on my kids going tooth-trimmed toe to toe with your grandkids any day of the week! My oldest recently punched me in the balls so hard I instantly puked all over him. It didn’t faze him a bit. You think your progeny can handle that? They can’t. Trust me.

So, just let me know when and where, and we’ll take this pony show to the tracks, and separate the mules from the stallions.

“Ah! I’m a history buff. So I love culture. In order to learn and love and appreciate the culture of other people, I have to know and love and appreciate my own culture. So, being from Macon, I know that Cotton Avenue has a huge significance to the African American community here. The business community…there’s just so much history, the people, the events that were happening, the things that were happening. I love Cotton Avenue, especially as a place in downtown.

I also know there is a painful history about that as well. And so, I’m one of those people…I can see and learn from mistakes, from those things that are kind of difficult to address and just kind of be able to use that as, I don’t know, something that can draw people closer or bring people together to be able to positively move forward. It’s that culture. I love culture.

It’s what each individual brings at the table, but what connects them to other groups? I have this thing called ‘creativity.’ And sometimes because I am a creative, even in the business world or the business sense that, I don’t want to say gets me in trouble, but…

Well sometimes you have an idea, and it’s too wild. So, as a creative thinker…I bring my background to the table.

I come. I have ideas. I have experiences from all over the world, all over the country that I bring to the table.

I love to travel to anywhere…getting to meet new people, learn about their culture, learn about what they’re doing, how they’re doin’ it. That is, probably, actually what makes me want to get up in the morning – that culture, understanding culture and who people are based on their background…I think that is so beautiful, learning about people.”

Authentic Barber Shop Opens in Historic Ingleside Villege

By Stacey Norwood It’s almost 4 in the afternoon, and as per usual, I’m running late. Fortunately, Ingleside Beard & Barber is a 5-minute drive from my house, but even so, I dash out wearing the yoga pants, exercise T, and comfy sweater that, normally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in for a work-related interview.

Worse yet, the second I close the door of my car to dash away, dash away, dash away all, I realize I fairly reek of the bacon I had cooked only an hour before as part of a late-afternoon, working-day, low-carb lunch.

It occurs to me almost simultaneously that I’m going to Macon’s hottest new man cave to interview a bunch of dudes. And I smell like bacon. If I close my eyes, I can almost see the diamond engagement ring I imagine I’ll be leaving with.

Pulling up to the place (head still dizzy with fantasies of spring and romance and oo-la-la), I find myself almost taken aback when I swing the door open. Though the hipstery storefront and sign out front offers at least a hint that Ingleside Beard & Barber is a cool place for cool people, daddy-o, you really have to see the inside to get the full effect.

I mean … for one thing, it’s gorgeous. The interior is wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling hardwood, clearly a mix of

reclaimed and found pieces – low-key and very masculine, but lovely. Chairs line the street-facing wall, and the large front room is laid out in stations, each with an oldschool reclining barber’s chair, mirrors, the usual shave and a haircut fare. A tattooed bearded guy who looks like he would be very at home at a ZZ Top concert is located to the left, and at the moment, in his chair sits a little guy, maybe 10. I ask him if it’s his first haircut and get thrown some serious side-eye. To my right, a cheerful-looking lady barber is deftly shaving a guy’s head with an old-fashioned straight-razor while some steam-emitting contraption saunas the back of his head. I ask if I can just sort of look around. “Sure, yeah,” the tattooed guy answers, scissors in hand, never taking his eyes off the back of little man’s head.

I saunter towards the ante-room in the back, and (boom!) it’s like someone handed me the keys to some secret boy’s club. The place is all suave and swagger, complete with an inviting leather sofa to lounge on, a mini cooler stocked with cold things to drink within arm’s reach, and a ginormous TV mounted on the opposite wall with some sort of sports something playing. On the other side of the room, a chess table for two is all set up

and ready to go, and next to it sits the holy of holies: a lights-flashing, ball-clanging retro pinball machine. This place has got me gellin’ like Magellan, and I’m not even a guy.

All of which is very much by design, Hank Couillard (the tattooed dude) later tells me. As the manager and head barber in charge, Hank (who hails from a corporate background in insurance) has spent the last three years pursuing his passion: bringing back barber shops that offer an “old-school but new-school feel.” With the help of the owners and investors Chris Welchel and Branndon Veale, that’s exactly what Hank has helped to create.

IBB bills itself as “a new traditional shop specializing in men’s classic cuts and traditional hot lather/towel shaves.” Other services include beard trims and cleanups, nose and ear waxing, and facials – everything a sharp-dressed man might require for a well-groomed appearance. Which, according to Hank, is a for-real thing, even for the lumber-jackiest of men.

“It’s mainly just guys are going back to the fact that it’s not a bad thing to take care of yourself,” he says. “Now, for the most part, if you see a beard, it’s well-groomed, it’s well taken care of.”

The men of Middle Georgia apparently agree. Since opening a little less than two months ago, the shop has been booked solid almost every Friday and Saturday, attracting everyone from little leaguers to elderly gents, and not only from Macon, but also from Warner Robins, Gray, and other surrounding communities. Weekdays are steadily filling up too. In fact, business is so bustling, the shop is already advertising for another barber to add to its team, currently made up of Hank, Maggie Smith (the lady barber!), and John Hart.

Hank couldn’t be happier.

“Everyone gives the same compliment, as soon as they when walk in “I’m so glad to see Macon has a traditional barbershop coming back around,’ “he says. “That makes me feel amazing.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH

BOOKER T. JONES The sound of soul music could be heard coming out of every jukebox and car radio in America during the 1960’s, and it was Booker T. Jones who layed the groundwork and foundation of what soul and R&B music became. The music legend took some time to talk to us about his career and his thoughts on music today ahead of his performance at the 2018 Cherry Blossom Street Party on March 24th.

Your music has been the soundtrack for a lot of people’s lives and it can be said that you pretty much wrote the blueprint to which soul music was built from when you linked up with Stax Records in Memphis. What was that environment like when you set foot in Memphis at that time?

BTJ – Well, it was pretty fertile for young people growing up who wanted to be in music. There was a lot of music around on Beale Street. There was classical music, gospel music, and there was a place to play-- a lot of clubs in town, and there were a lot of people teaching music and bands in the public schools. It was a pretty fertile environment.

Now, when you got there, you were working with everybody like Steve Cropper and many others. Being here in Macon, it would be dumb of me not to as about the first time you ran into this driver that was supposed to be driving Johnny Jenkins up to record a song and ends up recording one of the greatest soul songs of all time. What was the first impression that 28 MARCH 16-30, 2018

you formed of Otis Redding when you first met him?

Well, we didn’t know he was a singer. He was loading suitcases, and going for food, and bringing in equipment. But the first time we heard him sing, it moved us all-- as it did every other time we heard him sing.

It was always very moving to hear him sing his songs, especially when he’s sitting next to you. A pretty humble person and dedicated to his music.

Now, when it comes to rhythm and blues music, it has changed over the past 30 years, and it doesn’t seem to have the same presence and platform that it used to command back in the late 50s and early 60s when the Stax and Motown sound was grabbing the attention of the nation. As one of the architects of the genre, do you see a point where R&B can regain its foothold in the American landscape?

Some of it is still the way it it used to be. I noticed that Bruno Mars went to Memphis to record some of his big hits in the same place that Al Green worked, and the place where my drummer worked-- and worked with

Willie Mitchell and his son. So, some of it is really very familiar and the musical framework is still the same.

On your last album Sound the Alarm, you worked with a ton of people from Anthony Hamilton, Estelle, and Sheila E. to having legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis back on the board with you as well. You got a chance to work with Bill Withers’ daughter Kori Withers, and it was just kind of crazy when I was reading that you produced some of Bill’s greatest hits with “Grandma’s Hands” and “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

Talk about the experience of working with her.

That was a beautiful experience. She has the same passion as her father. And I wasn’t really aware of Bill’s daughter until I went to a tribute ceremony for him back in Virginia, and I went to that event, and he talked about how he heard his daughter sing down in the basement-- and that’s when I was made aware of Kori. Then, when I found out she was in California, and we needed the singer to go to Japan with us, she was available to go with us, and so we went to Japan, and the audiences really liked her over there. So, after that we went into the studio.

You have worked with every soul legend imaginable... What is that one memory from the studio that no matter how hard you can try to forget it, it will always stick with you.

I think I was doing “These Arms of Mine” with Otis Redding. That was the first song he ever recorded with us. It was totally unexpected. We thought we were going home for the day, and there he was singing like that. And so there’s something you just really couldn’t deny as a person who asked if they could sing a song, and then it turns out like it did.

"Michelle Malone fires Slings and Arrows and strikes gold. True dyed in the wool southern Americana is hard to find, and Michelle Malone is a beacon. She is the real deal, and Slings and Arrows is the validation." - Blues Magazine She won't remember this, but I met Michelle Malone on the Hummingbird stage back in 2005. The Replacements's “Bastards of Young” was playing overhead, and Michelle was kneeling with her guitar and working through the chords and riffs, singing along. At this point, she hadn't noticed me-- but dig that we were both dressed in boots, jeans, white v-neck t-shirts, and black leather jackets. I stood with my guitar case, watching her remember the song-- it was obvious she knew it, had probably obsessed over it, but somewhere down the road had set it aside. So, there I was mentally noting the chords Michelle Malone's fingers were forming. She looked over, sized me up in about a second, and smiled. If I hadn't known better, I might've fallen in love.

Michelle Malone came out of that fantastic Georgia music dynamic that created Drivin-N-Cryin, The Georgia Satellites, REM, the Black Crowes, and the Indigo Girls. It was actually Emily Saliers and Amy Ray who encouraged Michelle to seriously perform back in the late 1980's-legend has it around a table at the Majestic Diner in Atlanta. In 1990, Michelle Malone and Drag The River released the album Relentless on Arista Records. It was a pretty heavy debut record to promote, almost ahead of it's time, but not quite on time. Alt-country was just beginning to rattle, alternative and grunge was gestating... Michelle found that a major label's expectation wasn't necessarily her own.

In 1992, Michelle Malone formed her own indedependent label, Strange Bird Songs. Since 1999, Michelle has exclusively released music on SBS. But what do you call it?

You have to call her work something, but to put Michelle Malone in a box would be a labour of Herculean proportions somewhere between the girdle of Hippolyta and the Stymphalian birds. She's a guitar goddess, a craftswoman.

She's a Georgia artist, Southern and unencumbered. She's political or punk as the mood strikes her. She sings the blues, rocks with angst and abandon. She's at home on the stage, alone and stomping or driving rhythm with Chuck Leavell or Gregg Allman. She hears her peers when she picks up the phone-- Shawn Mullins, Dan Baird, Kevin Kinney, Kristen Hall and Jennifer Nettles... To witness or work with Michelle Malone is to experience what Georgia rock n' roll is, was, and always should be.

I'd considered the Hummingbird stage mine. It was my home, where the Liabilities practiced and wrote songs. I had the opportunity to play with some of my heroes, met my wife there... But I knew different that night Moanin' Malone came to town. It doesn't matter where she goes, who's opening or closing the night, whether she's a one woman band or leading an ensemble-- Michelle Malone owns any stage she puts her boots on. The rest of us are just keeping the boards warm for her.

On March 2nd, Michelle Malone released Slings and Arrows, a new album full of blues guitar, solid lyrics, and Georgia heart. Slings and Arrows features Michelle's friends and local musicians including fellow Atlanta singer/songwriter Shawn Mullins. Charley Crockett's 2015 album In the Night embodies everything I like about Americana. It's a unique mash-up of soul, blues, country, R&B, and Zydeco that just feels natural. In 2017, Charley released Lil G.L.’s Honky Tonk Jubilee, an album of mostly classic honky-tonk covers from the likes of Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Roy Acuff, and Webb Pierce. Recently, Charley displayed his hard-earned, infectious charisma and strong stage presence alongside J.D. McPherson at the Hargray Capitol Theatre, and Rolling Stone just listed him in their 10 Country Artists to Watch in 2018.

On April 20th, Charley will release Lonesome as a Shadow. The first advanced single, “I Wanna Cry”, was inspired by the loss of his sister and showcases Charley’s love of Louisiana music, prominently featuring accordion and acoustic guitars. The second,“Lil Girl’s Name”, channels an updated Buddy Holly vibe with catchy electric guitar riffs.

A deeper dig reveals 50’s era country standouts like the autobiographical title track “Lonesome as a Shadow” and “Change Your Mind” that are comfortably at home next to horn-laden soul tracks like “Sad and Blue” and “Ain’t Got to Worry.” In the Night was a bold announcement of Charley’s arrival on the national Americana scene, Lonesome as a Shadow is proof that he is here to stay.

"Lonesome as a Shadow is really important for me,” Charlie says. “I’d been in the shadows and playing out on the streets for years. That kind of living gave people the impression that I was rough around the edges. Just a gentleman Hobo. I learned a million songs standing out in the street, but I’ve also written a million too. This record is me laying all that out there. I’ve got more songs than years in this life to cut ‘em all so I’ve got to get busy! It’s a Texas & Louisiana record through and through, but it’s a Memphis Soul record too, and I really like that."

Demun Jones has his own way of keeping it real with the music he writes. Jones County might be the most genuine collection of songs to represents who the Georgia native is, and the album certainly illustrates the place he’s lived his entire life. I’ve been obsessed with Lyle for a while.

His boom-box project-- a collection of huge photos of the ghetto blasters of my youth, hung at Jackson Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta long enough for me to see it.

I couldn’t help but dig deeper. You know Lyle’s work. He was up early on the morning of September 11, heard an explosion and caught some of the most iconic images taken from the deadliest attack on U.S. soil in history. He also traveled by motorcycle through Mongolia to photograph the last of the falcon hunters in that region. Subject matter and expertise. It don’t get much better in my book.

THE MC5 KICK OUT THE JAMS

Every frame of footage from any MC5 show looks like a photographer waited all night to capture just the right moment to convey rock n’ roll’s explosive, raw power. A series of missteps and good old-fashioned shooting themselves in the foot prevented an outcome where The MC5 became known as the most important band from the US. Instead, some band members died or were made examples of and sent to jail-- and learned hard lessons to survive. But 1969 for The MC5 meant righteous optimism and activism, gonzo rock and roll, and riot-inciting live shows. When they signed a major label deal, they stipulated that their “little brothers”, The Stooges be signed as well. In 2010, Stooges frontman Iggy Pop stood at the podium at his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and mumbled sternly, to ears he knew would not understand, “The MC5 were COOL.” They wanted their debut to capture the stunning energy they threw off live, so their first album is, bafflingly to 21st century tastes, a live recording that captures, more or less, what a kid in 1969 would have heard while looking through the windows of The Grande Ballroom. Their label dropped them over a profanity-laden advertisement they’d taken out and included the record label’s logo on in a misguided effort to look more official. Their follow-up record on a new label sounded thin, sped up. By their third record, they’d gotten the recording right but struggled to find a sympathetic ear at the label to promote it properly, and it seemed that the moment was over. In 2018, The MC5 sound both fresh and relevant. The civil rights and political over-and-undertones still apply. A youthful energy blossoms in every tune, because The 5 drank rock n’ roll from the same fountain as Little Richard and Chuck Berry, had the moves of James Brown and issued rock, blues, jazz and funk as well as a sweaty, angry, unnamed thing that didn’t yet have a name: punk. But punk is the last thing on my mind when Wayne Kramer wails on his American flag Stratocaster, sideways moonwalking a toe drag across the stage. He makes me forget what time or era it is. I only know that rock n’ roll, and the MC5 may yet save us all.

Now, before you go any further, you can cut out yer smirkin’, pull yer nose outta the air, knock off the “that’s not a real old-fashioned” hipster banter, and anything else that ain’t, “Yessir, Mr. The Irons, that sure sounds tasty!” Start with the simple syrup (I keep a pint o’ the stuff made in the fridge), add the bitters. I like a lot o’ bitters. Pour in the rye. Drop in the cherries (I call ‘em Ole, Arn, Ric & Tully), give that orange slice a ‘lil squeeze then throw it in too. Screw the lid onto the jar, shake vigorously and vociferously. Add your ice, top it off with club soda. Put the lid back on, shake it up, and Wooooo!

Rather than preparing something pink, I have a recipe for the beloved cherry with Fresh Cherry Hand Pies. Something a Pink Lady or a T-Bird can enjoy long after the pink cherry blossoms fade.

FRESH CHERRY HAND PIES *5 ounces fresh pitted cherries *1 tblsp brown sugar *1/2 tsp almond extract *1 tsp lemon juice *1 tblsp + 2 tsp cornstarch *1 sheet frozen puff pastry (1/2 a box-defrosted) *1 lrg egg yolk *2tsp heavy cream *granulated sugar for sprinkling on top Preheat oven to 400. Quarter your pitted cherries and place them in a bowl with brown sugar, almond extract, lemon juice & set aside. Flour your cutting board and unfold the pastry dough and lightly roll it out to where it is ½” larger on all sides. Using a 6 inch round cutter, cut out 2 circles and placed on a parchment lined baking sheet. Divide the cherry mixture evenly between the rounds, placing it on one side of the circle about ½” from the edge. Beat together the egg and heavy cream in a small bowl, then brush the entire edge of the dough circle, folding over and crimping to seal. Slice 3 slits in the top and sprinkle with sugar. Bake 18-21 min until golden and puffy. And it you just have to make it pinkwhip up a simple glaze with ½ c. powdered sugar, 1-2 tsp water and a few drops of red food coloring.
