Small brief // Papyrus // Research BRIEF: To create an adult colouring style visual representation of something which helps you feel calm and relaxed. It should be landscape A3 in 0.3mm fine liner pen. It may be included in a colouring book to raise awareness and funds for Papyrus, the prevention of young suicide charity. Key ideas: - Things that make me relaxed: Knitting; cups of herbal tea; yoga; meditation

I decided to focus on knitting, as I started knitting again when I was going through a tough time, and I wanted to share this experience with other people. Also, I have a personal connection to suicide and mental health with my close family, so this was really a project close to my heart. I started by knitting a small section of wool, and posing so my friend could take some photos. I then mixed this with a chunky knit jumper during drawing to get the effect I desired. I found the actual drawing of the image relaxing in itself, and found the experience of working for something with a real purpose to be such an eye-opening, enlightening experience, which I would definitely like to repeat.

Small brief // Papyrus // Outcome

Creating a repetitive but unique pattern through natural elements was an interesting and informative experience which taught me a lot about patience, as well as suitability of the outcome to the brief. I enjoyed roughing out and sketching my ideas, before tracing a detailed, precise outcome, from which I also created a time-lapse which the client requested. After I sent the submission, I noticed a few errors, such as the blank space behind the right hand, but I think this was an important lesson in checking before submitting.

Small brief // Penguin // Research BRIEF: 3 x book jackets. They should all adhere to the provided template and include the copy text supplied. I read the books, and based on the briefs, these were my key thoughts: 1. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 - Be imaginative and have point of difference - Ensure children want to read this classic book - Appeal to broadest possible audience 2. To Kill A Mockingbird - Strong use of typography, including the beautiful writing - Appeal to a contemporary audience - Avoid obvious iconography 3. In Cold Blood - Bold, maybe shocking - True to the book - Original interpretation

Small brief // Penguin // Development

By vast amounts of roughing, I was able to develop a strong theme and direction to head in for each book cover. I decided to focus on texture and childlike drawings for Adrian Mole, as this would appeal strongly to the intended audience. By creating my own coloured shapes from gouache and cut paper, which I then drew over with pen and ink, I could make a school kid-esque feel. I also scanned in wood to get the feel of a child’s desk at school, with their things just thrown down onto the surface. I had to carefully consider composition as I wanted to include a lot of elements, but was very limited on space. I would have liked to add some nostalgic extras, such as chewing gum, crisp packet etc.

For To Kill A Mockingbird, I wanted to focus on the text of the book, as the beautiful writing is what makes it so succesful. I also wanted to make a timeless cover which was different to the current ones. I was keen to make up the title of the book with the actual text from inside, as this is by far the most important aspect of the book, and highlight a peek inside. I avoided the actual figure of the mockingbird, as I feel this is overdone. Instead, I hinted to in in one design (bottom right) where I used the mirrored text to suggest birds wings. Also, I wanted to stick to the black and white to highlight the race issue within the book, but it was incredibly illegible so I changed it to the actual colour of the pages from my copy. I found working between screen and paper roughs throughout incredibly helpful, as I could quickly see what affect the changes would have, but without the pitfalls of designing on screen which I encountered during the Illustration 12 brief.

I utilised my saved textures to add the rough ink splat elements to my design, which saved on time. I decided to persue the four gun shots and a cut for In Cold Blood, to respond to the brief of ‘true to the story’ and ‘shocking’, and developed a very rough, elementary style, made from texture and items which could have existed when the book was written. Also, I experimented a lot with the placement of the gunshots though photoshop, and I found this a really useful way to experiment with raw, physical aspects in a digital way. I aso learnt a lot about proper organisation and correctly saving textures etc which may be of use in the future in order to save time and allow me to spend longer on development.

Small brief // Penguin // Final Designs

The final mock ups, I feel, reflect my intent for the briefs and have different points of interest. However, I feel like I could have pushed my development of In Cold Blood and To Kill A Mockingbird, as I had more to say about their content and could have further expressed this on the cover. I had to rush finalising my designs due to the approaching deadline, which is a lesson in time management and considering how much work I take on. Overall, I feel the Adrian Mole cover is most successful as the different textures and colours reflect well the intended young audience without being too childish or garish.
