Student Residence

Page 1

Brief : To design a residence cum hostel for 12 students which includes a PWD ( could be male or female) in the given site location.

We had to start by organizing the various activities (public/private , shared/persoanl etc. ) that are involved in a day to day student life and then trying to categorize the spaces where these activities take place. The idea was to form an order of activity and organize the spaces in order to facilitate the flow of each activity in the best possible manner.

We made organnigrammes for the overall space to understand the various activities and the spaces dealing with them. We categorized them as PUBLIC external, PUBLIC internal, SEMI-PRIVATE and PRIVATE. We also tried to link spaces according to their order of activity and tried to draw connections as to which spaces require necessary linkages and quick accessibility.

The next step was to enter into the details of each paces and do a deatiled study of each in terms of amount of light required, exterior views etc. We divided our study into three broad categories RECREATION and related activities, WORKSPACE and SLEEPING and realted activities.

Next we tried to give form to each space depending upon the human interaction with the space.

Reception is the space where students first enter on entering the hostel, they can collect their mail or keep ther bags here for a short duration as well as register complaints

Lounge is a meeting space for all the students its in connection with the exterior, so its a very interactive place with cozy seating

Cooking and eating space has a small kitchen where the food for all 12 students is cooked. There is a common as well as individual storages available , both outside and inside the refrigerator. The eating space is separated from the kitchen by the serving area.

TV Room is a space used by all 12 students and is hence a shared space. The space has seating which is informal and at different levels to accomodate beter viewing.

Recreation space is mainly a space where students can take a break, play a game or dance etc. Its again a shared and common space.

Workspace is mainly a space that will be used by all the 12 people but at the same time every student will have his/her own personal workstation and storage space.

Each individual has his her won sleeping space in connection with a toilet and bathroom which is shared by two students. Each room has a storage unit for clothes and other things, bed and a big sliding window with mosquito protection.

We tried to study the sun path and the play of shadow that will be formed on site to accordingly form the building.
