Our approach is focused on collaborating with landfill operators to build, operate and remediate waste disposal sites with minimal environmental impacts. In a time of increasingly stringent environmental regulation, we stay up to date with all the latest legislation changes to ensure your project is fully compliant. We also develop imaginative solutions for the re-use of landfill sites, which is becoming more and more important where land for development is scarce.
01 City of Greater Geelong, Drysdale Landfill, Victoria We have designed two new waste cells, which will allow this growing region to continue to effectively manage its municipal solid waste in an environmentally responsible manner. By undertaking a lifecycle cost analysis and redesigning the traditional cell liner solution previously adopted, we have made significant savings in both construction time and money and created an additional 50,000m3 of airspace meaning more revenue for the client and an extended life for the landfill.
02 Leachate Management Solutions, Various To ensure clients optimise the outcome for their landfill it is crucial to understand the EPA requirements, study which option/solution best fits the site and operations, and understand the associated costs and time implications for construction. We take a whole-of-life approach to leachate management and have delivered holistic solutions for many Councils and helped make significant programme and budget savings.

03 Macedon Ranges Shire Council, PC PAN Support, Victoria Meinhardt has prepared Hydrogeological Assessment reports for the Kyneton, Bullengarook and Lancefield landfills to assist Council in meeting their PC PAN requirements for these sites. Our work for the Kyneton landfill has also included preparation of a detailed Leachate Management Plan providing assessment of cost effective leachate disposal options, and obtaining a Trade Waste Agreement for discharge of leachate to sewer. We have also been working closely with Council to develop a detailed landfill cap design. Throughout this project we have provided Council with strategic technical advice, and represented Council in discussions with the EPA and other key stakeholders with our main aim to achieve practical solutions that meet the overarching environmental objectives.

Review of Environmental Effects
We provide long-term strategies and solutions for all kinds of contaminated land challenges. The continuing urban sprawl of our cities is a worldwide phenomenon, resulting in many inner city industrial sites being redeveloped. We work with clients, from Councils to private developers and planners to design team members, who understand the need for consultants with a detailed appreciation of the sensitivities involved. With environmental impact assessments now often mandatory for projects, we are able to provide technical expertise that considers the existing environment and potential impacts across all segments from surface waters and groundwater to flora and fauna surveys, water sensitive urban design, wetland design and more.
01 Ipswich City Council, Queensland Ipswich City Council was concerned about the environmental impacts on groundwater at their depot. By undertaking a detailed fieldwork assessment we were able to identify potential future contamination issues. We recommended placement of groundwater bores and created a monitoring plan to allow data trends to be established, enabling the client to implement a long-term strategy for the site.
02 Acid Sulphate Soil Management Plan, New South Wales Meinhardt was commissioned by Hampton Property Services to prepare an Acid Sulphate Soil Management Plan (ASSMP), for the proposed development site located at Coronation
01
Road, Macksville. Acid sulphate soil is the common name given to a range of soil types containing iron sulphides and/or their oxidation products. The ASSMP was designed to be utilised as part of planning and development activities. Previous work indicated the presence of potential and actual acid sulphate soils (PASS and AASS, respectively) at the site. The ASSMP developed by Meinhardt provided appropriate control measures for management of PASS and AASS during the proposed earthworks that may give rise to disturbance of acid sulphate soils, including deep foundation excavation (up to 12 m below ground surface), trenching for installation of services, and cut and fill activity. The ASSMP considered both the existing and potential future environmental impacts relating to PASS material in and around the project site and detailed mitigation measures to minimise the potential impacts both within and surrounding the subject site.

By creating a series of initiatives and priorities, clients are given a clear roadmap to meet their objectives. We have developed full life-cycle engineering approvals and advisory solutions for numerous waste generating and disposal facilities and have provided strategic assistance to governments, waste management groups and corporations.
01 Department of Health, Victoria The team undertook a review of the department’s waste management practices and created a suite of initiatives to reduce waste generation and waste to landfill and increase resource recovery. This has resulted in the establishment of evaluation criteria to determine priority initiatives for government and the development of an innovative healthcare waste data collection tool (see Case Study).
02 Victorian Advanced Resource Recovery Initiative (VARRI) As engineering advisors to the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Metropolitan Waste Management Group, Meinhardt provided support for the development of the business case to help meet ‘Towards Zero Waste’ targets. An evaluation matrix was created to help our client make informed, strategic, business-driven

A long-standing, ongoing working relationship has allowed active management of risk.
Facilitated Community Engagement & Consultation
Active Management of Risk
Central to the relationship has been the masterplan initiative for the former landfill site at Bolinda Road, Campbellfield to provide “Best Value outcomes for the community. The process investigated opportunities for improved resource recovery and waste management infrastructure for the site. It has been important commercially to identify and resolve development constraints. Of particular note is the active landfill gas collection and energy generation infrastructure at the site. Parts of the landfill, due to age, were not lined and so management of leachate and reducing the risk of groundwater contamination have been key considerations for the client. Engagement is important in this sensitive area. Facilitating community consultation has helped smooth the process for the client. A range of tools have been used to engage with stakeholders, including focus groups and workshops, meetings and discussions, notices in the local paper, mail-outs and a public information session.
