Message from the Governor of Bangkok The BTS SkyTrain is a modern, rail mass transit system, on an elevated structure over congested roads. With spacious, air-conditioned carriages, it is capable of transporting plenty of commuters to their destinations comfortably, quickly and safely, with saving in both time and energy. This mass transit system has enhanced the quality of life for the residents of Bangkok. This is the beginning of many more years of success for Thailandûs first line of sky train service. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), with its willingness to continue providing better service to people through development of mass transit systems, has opened the extension service cross the Chao Phraya River to Wongwian Yai Station, Thon Buri District. It is the first sky train route connecting the people of the two river banks for their greater convenience. Moreover, the two new extension routes including Sukhumvit Road to Soi Baring 107 and Wongwian Yai to Bang Wa will be in services soon, contributing yet again to the further upgrading of the quality of life for urban citizens. On this auspicious occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the introduction of the BTS SkyTrain System, I would like to express my congratulations and thanks to the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC) for their service to the residents of Bangkok and other commuters. May I extend my best wishes for its greater success and prosperity in the future. M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra Governor of Bangkok

Message from the CEO of Bangkok Mass Transit System Pcl. (BTSC) The 10th Anniversary of the introduction of the BTS SkyTrain is a significant occasion, which I am certain, is much appreciated by Bangkokûs millions of commuters and tourists, all of whom appreciate the high degree of travel comfort and the rapid pace between stations. As it celebrates its 10th Anniversary, the BTS SkyTrain has become an essential part of many commutersû lives, enabling them to travel quickly and safely to their work destinations, arriving cool and refreshed and ready for the dayûs business. As part of our ongoing development strategy, we recently introduced the new Silom Line extension from Saphan Thaksin Station to the terminus at Wongwian Yai Station and in early 2010, we hope to inaugurate the Sukhumvit Line extension to Soi Baring 107, in Bangna district, and the Silom Line extension from Wongwian Yai to Bang Wa. On this our 10th Anniversary, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Governor of Bangkok, officers of the Government, people concerned, and BTS SkyTrain management and staff for their hard work and dedication, that has enabled the BTS Skytrain to become one of Bangkokûs most successful and efficient mass transport systems.

One Billionth Passenger Trip! In February 2009, the BTS SkyTrain completed its 1 billionth passenger trip since the service was first introduced. Throughout the year, daily average patronage on weekdays reached 442,695 trips, an increase of 4.14% from 2008. Average patronage at weekends also recorded a significant increase during the same period, of 6.22% to 338,225 trips for Saturdays and 5.29% to 235,907 trips for Sundays and Public Holidays. This gradual increase in patronage can largely be attributed to high levels of passenger satisfaction. Surveys, in which samples of passengers mostly gave satisfaction ratings of four out of five, show that throughout the 10 years of SkyTrain service the great majority of commuters are satisfied with the enhanced convenience and speed of travel, alleviation of traffic problems, good corporate management, high standards of service, trustworthy safety levels and modern operations, on par with international standards. These factors are complemented by the systemûs overall service reliability. To cope with the rapidly growing number of passengers, BTSC has purchased 12 new trains, each with a four-car configuration. These new trains will be delivered to Thailand in early 2010. To further broaden service coverage, the Silom Line Extension was opened in August 2009 and several other extensions are slated to come into service in the coming years.

Service Quality BTSC has stressed the importance of service by setting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Service Reliability at 1,100 passenger trips per one time; meaning that on average, only one instance of a delay of over five minutes occurs every 1,100 trips. The KPI figure is considered to be high compared to other similar systems. BTSCûs success in providing SkyTrain services has been recognized by the ISO 9001:2000 certification, awarded in July 2002. In addition, BTS has received the Super Brand Award for the year 2003-2004, highlighting its outstanding position in the market, its popularity, reliability and acceptance by the general public.
Maximizing Passenger Satisfaction Passenger convenience has been further enhanced with the introduction of easy payment systems, particularly the Smartcard launched in 2007. Smartcards can now be çtopped upé at Bangkok Bank ATM machines in the vicinity of BTS stations as well as at BTS ticket counters. Combined ticket systems will also be launched shortly for use with other mass transit systems, further adding to the convenience of BTS passengers. BTSCûs research has shown that most commuters believe that the Passenger Information & Entertainment System (PIS) is a necessity. The company has therefore installed LCD screens inside trains to announce station names and provide emergency notifications and other relevant passenger information, as well as advertising and entertainment. At BTS stations, LCD screens have been installed in ticketing areas and plasma TVs on the platforms, to provide information and entertainment to passengers.
Access Enhancement Major real estate developments located close to the SkyTrain system have seen the added value and advantage of convenient public access to the system. Direct links have been built from stations to several projects with many more now under development or slated for the near future. To date, links from 12 stations to 31 buildings have been constructed and more links from stations to buildings are planned. Over the next three years, 59 new lifts will be installed at BTS stations by the BMA, in an effort to improve access for the mobility impaired. A connection from BTS Phayathai to the new Airport Rail Link is also under construction, which will facilitate convenient access from Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown hotels and shopping districts.
Health, Safety and the Environment Since the establishment of operations, BTSC has given top priority to the health and safety of passengers, personnel and contractors, receiving OHSAS 18001:2007 certification for health and work safety management and rail transport safety management from Lloydûs Register. BTSC conducts emergency drills in conjunction with external parties such as the police, medical crews and others, as well as safety checks of buildings and working areas throughout the year. These efforts have ensured that injuries among passengers, staff and others have remained well below accepted limits throughout ten years of operations. BTSCûs primary environmental activity involves improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption where possible. The company uses new technology and implements energy-saving measures to enhance energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. These efforts, together with reductions in traffic and petroleum consumption as a direct result of the Sky Trainûs operations, mean fewer emissions of greenhouse gases, less pollution and a cleaner, healthier city for all.

Committed to Expansion and Diversification On August 23rd 2009, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously opened the extension of the Silom Line, from Taksin Bridge Station over the Chao Phraya River to Wongwian Yai. The 2.2-km link is the first of several BTS SkyTrain route extensions under development and reflects BMA没s and BTSC没s commitment to route expansion, in order to provide comprehensive service to Bangkok residents. Two more extensions are currently under development and several more are at the design stage. The 5.25-km On Nut-Baring extension of the Sukhumvit Line and the 5.3-km Wongwian Yai-Bang Wa Silom Line extension will both be brought into public service in 2011. Detailed design and survey work on two more extensions is underway; the 12-km Mo Chit-Saphan Mai link and the 12.8-km Baring-Samut Prakan extension, with construction anticipated to commence soon. Both extensions should come into service within 3-4 years. BMA also plans to establish subordinate transit systems to transfer passengers to the main one, aiming to deliver even greater convenience. The feeder systems will include two routes of BRT and two routes of monorail. In addition to expansion of its core business, BTSC is keen to capitalise on new opportunities and diversify into related business areas. One of these is the development of a 莽Smartcard茅 electronic ticketing system in conjunction with Bangkok Metro Plc, operator of the underground metro. The Smartcard system has the potential to include other related businesses, which will facilitate greater convenience for passengers.
