The Panton chair is one of those chairs that in any design manual is said to be iconic, that are a contemporary classic. A chair made of a single piece and with a single material. They give an avant-garde air to any space. But behind this innovative air is a piece that is almost sixty years old and a designer who gives his name, Verner Panton.
Verner Panton (1926-1998) was an architect, interior designer and designer of furniture, lighting and textiles, who developed his career between the 1950s and 1990s. (Vitra, 2019) A Danish designer who went beyond the concept of Scandinavian modernism, Scandinavian rationalism, and brought new concepts to the design of the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. His work was strongly influenced by the rise of the space age. The sinuous curves of the Panton chair and its glossy finish are references to automotive design. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019)
Its timeless design led the Panton chair to receive numerous awards and become part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York years later, becoming an icon of 20th century industrial and interior design.

Verner Panton's predilection for intense colours and geometric shapes is evident in his vast work as a textile designer. Panton's spatial compositions are known for fusing floors, walls and ceilings, as well as furniture, lamps, fabrics and panels of enamel or plastic to form a spatial unit as perfect as it is indivisible. Panton's work departs from what is traditionally conceived as Scandinavian modern design. His work was strongly influenced by the rise of the space age. The sinuous curves of the Panton chair and its glossy finish are references to automotive design. His work is closely related to the Opt and Pop Art movements of the late fifties and sixties. The Panton chair arose because Verner Panton wanted to break away from the formal idea of the chair at the time and the materials with which they materialized into the Panton chair, a one-piece, massproduced chair and plastic material that contributed to a foundational breakthrough as well as an immense innovation in the design world. The chair of Panton is one of the chairs which was then designed for different purposes. An evolution of the time design of the chair and an evolution with a modern, innovative design. “Rolf [Fehlbaum, from the founding family of Vitra] came to visit us one day and by chance saw a prototype of the Panton Chair. He didn't have enough stability to sit on it. Rolf asked, "Why isn't this chair manufactured?" I replied, "We've tried it with about twenty manufacturers, but they've all rejected the project for one reason or another. A well-known American designer - who was not Eames - went so far as to say that such a thing could not be called a "chair", because it was no good for sitting down. Rolf picked up the phone and called a Vitra technician, Manfred Diebold. Without Rolf, the Panton Chair would never have existed.-Verner Panton (Vitra, 2017).

In 1960, Panton began to seriously invest time and develop the idea of what would be his main project, which many other designers dreamed of: a one-piece plastic chair. The incipient technology, the lack of effective materials and the complexity of the project, however, made the one-piece chair of sinuous shapes and glossy finishes took a decade of studies and experiments to be created in series Fig 7 Vitra archives (Schnakenburg, L. 1967) [photograph]

The development of the chair was a challenge, as Panton's demanding design went far beyond the technological limits of the plastics industry and required very complex production methods that made the chair very time-consuming and difficult to manufacture. Together with the Vitra team, they embarked on a series of tests and error tests that led to the use of a wide range of materials. The first prototype was made of polyester and fiberglass and was hand-finished, turning into a fiberglass-reinforced, cold-pressed polyester in 1967. In 1968, a polyurethane foam developed by Bayer was tried, which was also unsuitable, as the finishes on the parts were so time-consuming. Thermoplastic was tested and injection molding was developed by BASF. This shortened finishing time, but additional strengthening had to be applied to the junction area between the foundation and the bench, altering the original design. Even so, the quality was defective and the chairs were cracked. Although it would take years for them to overcome the crisis, Vitra still believed in the chair, and so they continued to work on it until 1990, when they took up polyurethane again as a base material and worked on developing the chair according to the original model, which was more resistant but still spent a significant part of their time on finishing. Finally in 1999, three decades later, the current version of the chair made of polypropylene saw the Light and Vitra presented it to the great audience. Verner Panton could finally see his dream come true before he passed away a short time later. (Vitra, 2017) Structurally, we can argue that this chair is an invention in the creative design world of the 1960s. The use of the curved line gives the structure an ideal shape to suit the human body. The replacement of the legs with the base gives cohesion to the shape of the object Thanks to the simplicity of the chair, it creates a feeling of softness, balance and fluidity that is completed with the foundation that gives it a firmer appearance and gives the user security so that he is not afraid to sit on it. The sinuous design of this chair correctly suits its function which is to provide a comfortable seat that can be used both indoors and outdoors without losing its decorative character and retaining the simplicity and elegance of the piece, based on the fluidity and continuity of its curves, giving a feeling of softness and lightness.

“The Panton Chair, with its daring, sensuous shape, quickly became a media hit. Its fame grew thanks to a provocative photo sequence by photographer Brian Duffy published in the British magazine Nova in May, 1971. Entitled “How to undress in front of your husband”, a fashion shoot was turned into a flip-book showing Amanda Lear – singer, model and ‘the best stripper in Paris’ –stripping in the company of a red Panton Chair. She artfully avoids giving too much away –including her true gender, which was then the subject of much gossip (and a scandal that eventually cost the magazine art director his job). Verner Panton was highly amused when he found out about this unconventional striptease that showed his chair as an icon of the spirit of the 1960s. Not without reason, the Panton Chair was named the sexiest chair ever made.” Fig. 14 “How to undress in front of your husband” (Duffy, B. 1971) [photograph]

Panton's pioneering use of plastic as a base material for furniture production can set a direction in the responsible and sustainable use of plastics in the future, on the basis of the recycling industry. The japanese design studio Nendo has developed a chair based on some of the design concepts handled by Panton. This is the NO2 chair, created for Fritz Hansen, which is a stackable, lightweight, ergonomic and recyclable chair made from household recycled plastics. (Yabuka, 2019)

Unstoppable emergence of the digital market contributes to the spread of European design products in the growing Asian market, according to Patrizia Arienti team report for Deloitte (2019), which is also responsive to the internationalization of design as we can see in Middle East, where European brands are starting to settle strongly, getting significantly present in countries such as the UAE and Lebanon. Probably plastic may not match well with the definition of design piece in the Indian design market, which is more rooted in conventional luxury and oriental aesthetics, even though, thanks to the above-mentioned growth in the digital market, there may be greater projection between young residential customers or contract projects. The Panton chair is among the most commonly replicated in the market and has also inspired other designers that have developed similar seats based on other materials. The original Panton chair is currently being sold exclusively by Vitra in three versions: Classic, with three different glossy finish, Panton with a matt finish and more available colours, and Junior, designed for children and designed by keeping with the original design but reducing its size by 25%. As mentioned by Paradelo (2015) Limited edition models have also been produced in other colors and finishes, such as Panton Glow or Panton Chrome. (Paradelo, 2015) Its discontinuity in production due to the limitation imposed by the incipient development in plastic technology did not prevent this chair from becoming an iconic design, which has just turned 50 years old and has earned a place in the permanent collection of MOMA. The creation of a version for kids, Panton Junior, validates the product quality which is exposed to heavy and creative new uses by their little owners. passing the test with good marks. Even a pack of 5 miniature chairs has even been created, where the Panton also becomes a purely decorative object or a toy, making clear the relevance that this chair has in contemporary design.

I found the story of the Panton Chair very interesting. We're not just talking about a piece of furniture, we're talking about an idea that was created before time, and it had to wait no less than 30 years to introduce it. At a time when technology is ahead of the ideas of the average citizen, it is fascinating to see how Panton took a concept out of his mind that could only be produced in a satisfactory manner in the late 1990s. The price difference between the Panton Chair Classic and the Panton Chair is one thing which, I believe, completely represents the design nature of this chair and which is not stated. If we go to Vitra's website, we'll see that the price is EUR 1280, while the Panton Chair is EUR 279. That EUR 1001 means (in addition to the original design) many more hours of work dedicated to the development of the once impossible chair with a glossy finish that can be purchased comfortably from your home in their online store. The story is also one of the dedication of a team of people to make this happen. To show the world that yes, the chair could be made, that it's good to sit in and that it's beautiful and looks good everywhere. In my view, the piece has earned the right to be an icon of design.
