The design cycle also helps the designer to work through their thought processes in a step by step fashion thereby preventing one from becoming overwhelmed by a design task.

1. Assignment Brief

You will find plenty of information on each stage of the design cycle within your course material. See Module: Theory of Design - Idea Generation and the Design Process. The next two assignments will help you to put the design process into practice.

2. Task 1 3. Task 2

Maria del Carmen Corral Lodeiro

The design process or cycle is a tool that is used by many design industries. This process allows the designer to channel ideas methodically and in sequence so that during each stage of the process, certain tasks are performed. Once completed thoroughly, huge time savings can be made if, in the later stages of the cycle, revisions are required.

The first task will be to design a dining room for a client, you will find a detailed brief below. You will need to carefully consider and show each step of the design cycle so that your Tutor can see that you have applied each stage of the process to realise your final design. From the very beginning you will need to keep a timesheet so that you can clearly see how much time you spent on each task. In the 5th assignment you will be asked to invoice your 2 72546664

client for the time you spent on creating this design. It is therefore very important that you keep your timesheet accurately. You will also be asked to evaluate your progress and the use of the cycle within your design development and to make suggested improvements on how you have utilised it.

The Brief: You have been asked to re-design the spacious dining room of a family who live in an old, affluent area of town. Your client is a very wealthy couple in their late forties. They live in a large detached house within walking distance of the town centre. Simon is a partner in a big Tax firm and Julia is a professor of science at the local university. Simon enjoys playing golf and Julia is a keen gardener. Their children (3) are at university but still live at home. They often bring friends around and have study groups for which they use the dining room as well. The dining room is located next to the lounge and is used on a daily basis and by all family members for a huge variety of activities.

Maria del Carmen Corral Lodeiro

The dining room is also used for evening dinners with the family, lunches on weekends and bank holidays and every so often for formal entertaining as both Simon and Julia have very distinguished friends from the University and the City. Their only style requirement is that the design is neither too masculine nor too feminine and that substantial storage is provided so that during formal entertainment a very elegant ambience can be achieved. Please note: There is currently underfloor heating installed, therefore you need to consider this when selecting flooring.

Task 1 Before you can start with our design work you will need to research the design cycle and how this would apply to the design of this dining room. Compile a journal of all the work and research which you have completed in order to fulfil each step of the design cycle. Ensure you have included samples, ideas & sketches. Your research needs to show details of each design phase and how it relates to this task. Include your time sheet on a separate page.

3 72546664

Task 2 As part of the design cycle (stage 4 & 5) you are required to complete a plan, elevation and sample board of your completed project. Include in your journal for task 1, the different room layout proposals etc and in task 2 compile a completed and final (to include furniture): Plan
 Elevation
Sample board - of your design scheme for presentation to the client. By the end of this exercise you should have a complete design proposal to present to the client.

Requirements Neither too masculine nor too feminine and that substantial storage is provided so that during formal entertainment a very elegant ambience can be achieved. No particular style in mind. The lounge has a wonderful oval plaster ceiling and french wall panels that are being refurbished. Julia is a keen gardener and Simon loves golf. So, in addition to the property´s features, I should consider that in order to develop design ideas. Once this info has been collected, let´s proceed to next design stage

The Surroundings: Neustadt was a vast new extension adjoining the northern part of the old city, designed around public spaces and monumental buildings. The new town, which fitted in perfectly with the old part, marked a turning point in the long urban history of Strasbourg. It now offers a unique example of late 19th-century town planning in Europe and an exceptional blend of European architectural influences.

While the city had been brought into the modern age and covered a much wider area, it still retained its military importance, which had a significant influence on its urban layout.

Exploring the Neustadt The area is divided into three sections The monumental section

The outstanding qualities of the Neustadt development are widely acknowledged and an inventory is being compiled with a view to ensure its future protection and showcase its features.

The Neustadt was built around a 1,500 metres section linking place de la RĂŠpublique (the Kaiserplatz) to the University. The layout highlighted the new power centre of the city and its new status as capital of the Reichsland of Alsace-Lorraine.

A 5 km circuit explores the heart of the Neustadt, from the major thoroughfare linking the main monuments between the Palais du Rhin and the Observatory, up to the point where it merges with the old part of the city.

City architect Conrath placed the Kaiserplatz facing the University and its imposing garden square, illustrating the balance between the political power of the Emperor and the power of learning.

A short urban history of Neustadt

The monumental avenue separating the two squares was lined with large-scale administrative buildings, as well as the St. Paul Garrison church, which offered a magnificent view over the River Ill and the old city. The Kaiserplatz was built in juxtaposition to the old city, and contained the most important buildings of the new power, including the Palais de l’Empereur and the Parliament.

Shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Frankfurt, Strasbourg was made capital of the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen, under the direct rule of Berlin. A whole series of new buildings were constructed, to reflect the city's new status and to house the region's administrative services. At the same time, the city saw its economy and population undergo rapid development. Maria del Carmen Corral Lodeiro

16 72546664

The old city and its waterways

The residential part

The development scheme accorded considerable importance to the relationship between the old city and its waterways. It contained two main measures:

The new town also contained a large proportion of residential buildings to house the inflow of new inhabitants. To keep up with the city's status as a capital, the architects sought inspiration in other European capitals, such as Berlin, Paris and Brussels and these influences can be clearly seen in the Neustadt residential area.

#

•#

widening the roads leading up to the old ramparts

# •# the construction of new bridges and walkways over the Fossé du Faux-Rempart. By the end of the 19th century, the waterways which encircle the city had lost much of their economic and military importance. The new town saw the waterways more as a source of enjoyment and a way of increasing the city's attractiveness. They provided continuity between the two parts of the city and established a dialogue between the two sides. The city planners organised traffic flows on two separate levels. The top level, which ran along the upper part of the river and canal banks, was established as a main thoroughfare, with views over the most important parts of the Neustadt, while the lower part, next to the water, was an altogether quieter affair offering excellent walks for the local population along wide, tree-lined paths.

Maria del Carmen Corral Lodeiro

17 72546664

The residential buildings were very much in keeping with the organisation and architecture of the Neustadt development scheme as a whole, with oriel windows, hipped gables and turrets a regular feature, especially of the larger houses, while pediments enriched a perspective on the buildings which were usually protected from the public gaze by gardens. A number of public buildings were interspersed with the residential houses in the more important streets, thereby offering a changing perspective.

Maria del Carmen Corral Lodeiro

18 72546664

The plan of the Neustadt is, in part, of Haussmannian type, but presents some peculiarities. It is surrounded by a belt of boulevards, the streets are wide, often parallel to each other and intersect perpendicularly. Long avenues connect several monumental squares with a garden in their center (places of the Republic, the University, Haguenau, Bordeaux, Arnold). Green spaces play an important role: the Contades and Orangery parks, once located outside the city, are integrated into the Neustadt and new parks and walks are laid out such as the gardens of the University and the new garden botanical, many streets are also lined with trees.

Several axes also lead to long-term perspectives, such as the Avenue de la Liberté, which links the Republic Square, a symbol of power, to the University Square, symbol of knowledge, and which is the heart of the Neustadt or the avenues of the Vosges and the Black Forest which are articulated on the silhouette of the Saint-Maurice church, the streets Joffre, Foch and Goethe overlook the rosettes of the Saint-Paul church as well as the streets Sainte-Odile and Paul Muller Simonis showcase the dome of the church Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune catholic finally the Avenue de la Paix and the street Schweighaeuser open on the cathedral.

Maria del Carmen Corral Lodeiro

The architectural style of the Neustadt is eclectic, mixing different neo styles and art nouveau, but manages to maintain a certain coherence. The imposing and monumental official buildings are built in stone or sandstone of the Vosges, the buildings generally have 4 or 5 floors and consist of a stone ground floor, a facade often brick and wrought iron balconies. The buildings have modern comforts: water and gas on all floors, as indicated by small blue plates still present today. Some buildings have "Vorgarten", small gardens directly on the street.

There are also many villas, especially in the area of Ile SainteHélène whose curvy and winding small streets differ from the rest of the Neustadt. This particular arrangement, contrary to the original plans, was decided in order to create a "picturesque" district, according to the principles of the Austrian architect Camillo Sitte, composed of villas and gardens. The Neustadt also included social housing including rue du Fossé des Treize, east of the Black Forest Avenue, the city Spach and the "Katholischer Bahnhof".

19 72546664

The room: Wonderful natural lighning from S and W walls. High sun exposure. 2 wide windows W 1 bifold door S to the garden. Current works for underflooring heating set up. Wide access from living room by a double sliding door. Window fixtures to be determinated. (Exis ting wooden ones must be replaced)

Important points to consider: Sun exposure (window treatments) Flooring suitable for underflooring heating. The property style and surroundings.

Elegant, and good storage. Space too static. Tables are large enough up to 12 people, so they meet requirements for formal entertainment. In addition, the t wo sideboards accomplish requirements for storage, as the 2 shelves do, but this make the design appear too symmetric and hyeratic. On the other hand, these 3 meter tables make the room looking like a meeting room from an govt. ultrasecret law enforcement organization. Or Simon´s Tax firm meeting room. It´s only an idea, but home is a nice place to relax and forget about work for some hours.

Elegant, good storage and modularity. (all requirements) As seen in former layout, tables are large enough up to 12 people, so they meet requirements for formal entertainment. I´m keeping the t wo sideboards but only one shelf instead of t wo. There will be a console next to the windox. Spage gets modular and multipurpose. Tables can be splitted, creating 2 different spaces (study on exams period, for instance, and dinner), or put together (for formal entertainment or family meetings).

For this project, and after analyzing the elements of the environment, the interior to be designed and the preferences and tastes of the clients, as well as the uses that will be given to the designed space and the needs of the same, I have decided to put the accent on the forms more than the colors, I will take advantage of the large light inputs to give prominence in the design, the windows will be large doors open to color and garden light. The feminine and the masculine will be balanced through the continent and content, giving the walls, window treatments, the decorative details and the great ceiling lamp a feminine and romantic character based on the style and period of the surrounding dwellings, and on the another part putting the masculine accent through forms and materials. The floors will be high quality ceramics, according to the installed heating system. Floor lamps, table tops and wall sconces will complement the lighting and the curtains will be double, combining, blackouts and sheers. There will be a multitude of plugs to charge the devices when used as a study area and there is a data cable entry for installing network devices or additional hardware if neccesary.

"Vertigo is a den-lamp; it wraps around you, reducing space to an intimate atmosphere. Due to its extreme lightness, air currents make it slightly lose its balance and turn slowly. Vertigo seems to float, with the light on, it creates a pattern of shadows on the walls." Constance Guisset. Designer

Presenting designs to others. Sample Board. Getting impressions and suggestions.

Possitive feedback from colleagues. Functional Elegant Fresh Stylish Feedback from client: Although children were impressed by panoramic wallpaper, Simon and Julia asked me to test on my sketchup model how different wallpapers should fit, just to compare. Fortunately my laptop was by me, so I could show them different solutions directly on model. Finally, they made their choice on green vegetal wallpaper. Colour scheme and FFE are Ok and meet all client´s requirements.

Considering client´s comments and suggestions. On the next pages is possible to see a rendered model created with SketchUp. Client´s choice results can be seen, as the sample board displaying all selected materials. I´ve found hard to get some samples, such as marquina marble and leather from chairs. So I decided to include a digital sample created by me. Sideboards, wall sconces, tables and shelf have been modelled by me as well. Some textures have been created based on manufacturer´s digital samples, modified and adapted by me to give a realistic look.
