Lash Up

Enhancing your look with false lashes

When going for a beautiful wedding look, false lashes can make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary by making your eyes “pop”. Yet if you’re not used to wearing lashes on a regular basis, they can be difficult to apply, heavy, irritable and uncomfortable. Your wedding day is not the time to find this out, so if you plan on wearing falsies, be sure to test them out about a month before your ceremony. I recommend doing it this far in advance because you’ll have plenty of things to do as the ceremony gets closer and this will give you time to try out different lashes if needed. I’ve recently become obsessed with Ardell duralash natural individual lashes. With proper application and care, these lashes can last up to three weeks. Another long lasting option are individual lash extensions applied in a professional salon. These have the most natural feel and look, yet require monthly salon visits to maintain. For a lighter lash, small corner lashes will give you the Audry Hepburn look without the weight of a full lash. To test them out: Apply the lashes and wear them all day (at least 8 hours). This will give you an idea of what they’ll feel like on your wedding day. When you’ve selected the correct lash, and they’re properly applied you should not notice them or feel “fake”. If you get through the day without fidgeting with them, you’re set! However, If you find them irritating, heavy, or uncomfortable, you may need to try a different length, brand, or type of lash. Whatever style you decide to go with, remember that your lashes should enhance your eyes, not overpower them. And above all, you need to feel comfortable and of course be able to see clearly. So go ahead and test out a few different styles until you find the one that’s perfect for you!

Receptions

Make It Memorable Easy tips to keep your guests entertained

Being the daughter of a wedding planner, I’ve experienced my fair share of weddings over the years. Having been a part of so many of these special occasions, I’ve truly gotten an inside look at what makes weddings enjoyable, beautiful, and most importantly, memorable. Focusing on the décor and intimate details can make for a stunning event, however I’ve been to several beautiful and wonderfully executed weddings that still managed to fall flat due to the lack music, spirit selection, or engaging activities. While planning your big day, be sure to consider how you’re going to keep your guests entertained throughout the evening. Here are a few ideas to consider while arranging for your big day…. 1) Music: Overall, this is one of the most essential aspects in setting the mood for your event. This can determine whether your guests stay dancing into the night or awkwardly return home at the end of cake cutting. Keep in mind what the general attendance of your wedding will be, your music selection should reflect your own style while still being something your guests will connect with and appreciate. 2) Interactive Entertainment: A sure way to keep your guests entertained at your wedding is by hosting fun and interesting activities for them to participate in during the reception. Anything from photo booths, candy, yogurt, or cupcake bars, personalized treasure hunts, henna or fun games can wow your guests! These not only serve as excellent ice-breakers, but are also great for keeping the kids engaged. 3) Personalization: Personalization of your activities and décor can be an important factor in making your wedding an unforgettable occasion! An easy way to add a romantic feel to your event is by displaying photos of how you fell in love, or wedding photos of past generations in your families. You could also incorporate your own family traditions, hobbies, or interests by adding passages from your favorite poems in your vows, playing songs during the reception that are meaningful to you, hosting some of your favorite games or activities for

guests to enjoy, or involving your spiritual beliefs in the ceremony. 4) Alcohol Availability: An open bar, or even just table-served wine can be one of the easiest and most effective mood-enhancers of the night. Though open-bars aren’t for every couple or budget, alcohol availability is something you should keep in mind when planning your wedding. Having a “cocktail hour” between your ceremony and reception is a great way to get guests mingling and can also serve as a time buffer to make sure you don’t end up waiting around for dinner to begin. Even if you can’t afford an open bar, serving wine with dinner or making sure your venue has a bar will surely score points with your guests. Article by Savannah Hoekstra for Joy of Life Events

Find the Perfect Wedding Location Nevada County has become a top destination wedding location for savvy Northern California brides and grooms. Engagement Sessions Paving the way for an amazing wedding! Creating a stunning collection of wedding photographs takes far more than having a good camera. After your wedding day, the only thing left to cherish those moments will be your rings and your photographs, so it’s essential to find a photographer who will give you the memories and experience you deserve. There are so many aspects that go into having a positive photography experience and as a professional photographer and Sierra Wedding Specialist I really feel the engagement session is a key ingredient in giving my couples an all inclusive, amazing wedding day experience. This session is really an opportunity to get to know my couples better, learn more about their style and build confidence. It also gives me the chance to see their best angles and builds a solid foundation for a trusting working relationship. Because most people are intimidated of the camera, this shows my couples how fun and natural the experience can be. By the end of the session, they’re having so much fun that the nervous energy of being in front of the camera vanishes and they get really excited for wedding day! Everyone needs time to warm up to the camera, but I’ve found that 100% of my couples end up having a blast and feeling totally confident! On the other hand, I’ve had couples contact me who have had a horrible experience with other photographers. You can be sure that if your engagement session experience is bad, or the quality of photos low, then your wedding experience will be even worse. Keep in mind the following when working with your photographer: * Your photographer should be confident and help you open up in front of the camera. You should never just be left to “figure it out” for yourself. * Your photographer should go over location, wardrobe, and styling ideas prior to the shoot so that nothing is left up in the air.

* You should have your images back within a reasonable time. If it takes a month to process a few engagement images, think of how long it will take to see your wedding photos. * Most importantly, you should LOVE your photos and experience. If not, then it’s better to cut your losses and find someone you feel confident with. In the end, your photographs are all that’s left to cherish the amazing moments of your wedding day. Finding a photographer you connect with, and who will give you both beautiful images AND an amazing experience is far better than saving a few bucks. Because if you save $1000 and don’t love your photos, then it’s no savings at all.

Planning

Leave It To The Pros The Joys of Day-of Coordinators

While many brides are opting to create their own wedding design drawing from endless online inspiration, having a professional day-of coordinator on hand during your actual event is an affordable yet priceless investement in ensuring your wedding day goes exactly as envisioned. The designing aspect of a wedding can be fun and inspiring, yet the orchestrattion of any large event is best left to professionals, says Melanie Soleil, Wedding Photographer and Sierra Wedding Specialist. “I’ve seen too many bride’s and families overwhelemed and dealing with issues that tend to arise at events rather than enjoying the wedding. “ To solve this problem, day-of event coordinators such as Dyane and Jeff Albrecht, owners of Special Arrangements – Event Planning and Decorating, work with couples to ensure timelines, vendors, and all the wedding details are in place. This leaves brides free to enjoy their big day knowing a professional is on site to handle details and any issues that arise. “Your Planner is in charge of ensuring the entire event goes smoothly and and there aren’t any second chances.” says Dyane. “No matter what glitches might arise a Planner must remain calm, up beat, and professional. A successful planner should have excellent organizational skills, time-line development, task management, leadership and problem solving skills. It’s surely not a business for the faint of heart.” All day-of coordinators operate a little differently, so be sure to meet with them prior to your event to understand exactly what aspects they’ll be handling. Dyane Albrecht says “ With day of coordination we oversee all aspects of the day/evening so brides can enjoy their wedding. Our service begins with a complimentary introductory meeting to learn about the couple. A month ahead we meet to collect all vendor information and go over details of the wedding. We work with you to develop a timeline which becomes the guide we use to manage all other vendors and the wedding party on your day. We also attend your rehearsal and facilitate the ceremony procession and the transition to the reception.” Day-of coordination costs a fraction of full event design, so even if your wedding budget is stretched, consider the peace of mind this service will bring to you on what’s sure to be one of the biggest celebrations of your life! 18

Garden Delight Planning the perfect garden wedding The beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills are fast becoming a top pick for outdoor garden weddings. We here at Harmony Ridge Lodge, see so many couples coming from all over the country to enjoy the natural beauty and small town charm of Nevada County, particularly those looking for an outdoor setting. One of the biggest decisions in creating your perfect wedding is the choice of venue as it sets the entire style and feel of your event in a way that very few of the other elements do. A garden wedding requires planning in some unique ways and after hosting hundreds of beautiful garden weddings, we have these tips to ensure your day goes smoothly: Decorations: An outdoor garden wedding is a great option to reduce the cost of your decorating budget, as most outdoor venues are already naturally gorgeous. We have seen a popular tend of brides getting their flowers from local farms such as Indian Hill, Sweet Roots, Dinner Bell (all in Nevada County) and putting together their own centerpieces and bouquets. This offers a great opportunity for your bridal party to gather and enjoy each other, as well as creating beautiful decorations that really complement a garden setting.

20

Sierra WeddingGuide.com

Be aware of the weather: Early spring and late fall are two of the most beautiful, but also most unpredictable times of year for an outdoor wedding. Be sure to budget for tents and heaters in case of wet weather, and make sure you’ve discussed all the options with those who run the venue. On the other end of the spectrum, summer can be hot! Make sure that you have considered the heat when planning what to wear, such as a lighter dress for the bride and more casual attire for the groom and bridal party. Your guests will also be feeling the heat; consider printing your wedding program on the back of paper fans, or offering colorful parasols to guests shade from the sun. Both are great, attractive ways to beat the heat.

Sound: One of our favorite DJs, Greg Whatley of Mountain Event Productions advises that the most important thing you can remember about your event is to make sure that your guests can hear the ceremony by using a lapel mic. There is nothing more disappointing to a family member or friend who has travelled to see your big day, than to arrive and find that they are unable to hear the heart-felt vows you are sharing with each other. Food: After the ceremony itself, the biggest part of most weddings is the food. Make sure to keep lines of communication open with your caterer throughout the event. We have great local caterers, such as Antonio’s Catering, and Emily’s Catering and Cakes, who will work with you to prepare a beautiful, delicious meal that will please all your guests. If you’re really indulging in a garden theme, consider having your caterer create a seasonal menu with produce coming straight from one of the many local organic farms. Photography: With an outdoor venue, it’s important to work with a professional photographer who’s skilled at working with rapidly changing lighting situations. Melanie Soleil, wedding photographer specializing in outdoor Sierra Weddings says that garden weddings offer the most beautiful and diverse lighting opportunities. Ensure your photographer is trained to create beautiful images in any condition be it a sudden snow flurry, harsh shadows which are often present in gardens, backlighting, or low-light garden receptions after sunset. Planning: A wedding, as you probably already know, is a detailed, and occasionally stressful thing. Whether having someone to help shepherd you through the entire planning process, or simply a day-of coordinator to ensure your day goes smoothly is invaluable to ensure your family can enjoy the event. . Donna Hoekstra of Joy of Life Events has awed us many times in her ability to keep a day running smoothly, and helping to create our couples’ vision of perfection without a hitch. The Venue: Of course, the biggest detail in a garden wedding is the venue itself. Here at Harmony Ridge Lodge we specialize in weekend weddings, offering our couples’ and their friends and family an extended, relaxed way to enjoy their wedding. Every location has something different to offer, from gardens to woods, to sweeping views or rustic structures. The biggest thing is that you choose what helps to create the backdrop of what you envision for a perfect outdoor wedding. Article by Jackie Cowen Harmony Ridge Lodge Events Manager

Yes to the Dress

Fashion Inspired Bridal Sessions

Finding the perfect wedding gown is a little like love at first sight. It doesn’t matter how many dozens of dresses you try on, the moment you step into “The One”, you know. The cut is perfect for your body, the fabric decadent, as if the dress was hand crafted just for you. During the months leading up to wedding day you get little teasers of wearing it: alterations, fittings, maybe trying it on for your girlfriends. However, those little glimpses don’t quite feed the desire to wear the dress in full view of family and friends. So after the wedding day has come and gone, rather than just boxing up that gorgeous dress and retiring it to storage, many brides are indulging in a chance to wear their dress again for a Bridal Photo Session. The Bridal Shoot is a fun, glamorous, stylized shoot designed to make you feel like a model for a bridal magazine. These are only limited by your imagination and can be as simple or extravagant as your want. It’s the chance to accessorize your dress with some bold shoes and jewelry, or let your hair down and head to the river for a more natural look. If you’re considering a Bridal Session, make sure to schedule your session before getting your dress cleaned. Chances you’re your dress will be a bit dirty from a long night of dancing and dragging on the floor. I love to schedule Bridal Sessions with my Brides shortly after their wedding, as the “newlywed glow” is still radiating from their every pore . We work closely together to come up with a concept that fits her personality and dress, and then head out for a fun afternoon of shooting. By this time, my Brides have had such great experiences in front of my camera, that they’re completely comfortable and really let loose and indulge in the experience of a high fashioned shoot. The result is a gorgeous collection of photographs and of course, the indulgence of wearing the dress one last time before it goes to storage. 22
