2015 Purple Passion Gala Program

Page 1

Dear Friend, Welcome to our 7th Annual Purple Passion Gala to End Lupus! Our Board of Directors, Gala Committee and Staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that today’s event is a celebration of hope honoring outstanding individuals who have been champions for those living with lupus and their families. The 7th Annual Purple Passion Gala to End Lupus offers you the opportunity to join together with the community and raise critically needed funds to support the Lupus Foundation of America DC/MD/VA Chapter’s mission and its comprehensive programs to fight lupus and end its brutal impact on individuals and families, while participating in amazing silent and live auctions that include an array of items appealing to anyone, including those on your holiday shopping list. It is a harsh fact of life that lack of money often stands in the way of curing sickness and providing services, but there is an answer. Thanks to people like you who bring new money to the fight, our Chapter rallies experts and deploys resources so that society can make progress toward solving the cruel mystery of lupus and ending its devastating impact. The goal of today’s event is to raise funds that sustain our lifesaving Patient Navigation Program that was launched seven years ago from the funds raised at this very event. Our vision at that time was to create a patient centered program that met the needs of anyone suffering from lupus. The program is a lifeline to those in crisis and the only program in this country that addresses the needs of those with lupus individually to ensure proper care is received. Because of your dedication and passion to end lupus, LFA-DMV’s Lupus Patient Navigation Program is thriving and has already this year provided over 1,800 individuals with critical resources that enhanced their quality of life. I am honored to have you with us today and encourage you to have fun! Share your passion to end lupus on social media using #PurplePassionGala. Sincerely,

Katy Ahmed President and CEO

Gala proceeds benefit the Lupus Foundation of America’s DC/Maryland/Virginia Chapter, further impacting the lives of lupus patients in our local community. All funds will directly support research and conduct education programs so that everyone affected by lupus can have an improved quality of life; provide information to ensure patients and their families get answers, while health professionals acquire new knowledge to diagnose and manage the disease; conduct activities to increase awareness, rally public support for those who are affected by lupus, and advocate on their behalf.

About This Year’s Honorees Pamela was diagnosed with lupus 15 years ago and has been involved with the Chapter ever since. The Chapter was the first place she turned to for help when she was diagnosed with an illness she knew nothing about. In her first six years on the Board, Pamela served in the roles of Vice President and then President. She was responsible for the car raffle, active in our golf tournaments, and her team, Team Green Machine, is always a top fundraiser at our Washington, DC walks. During her tenure her dedication was recognized by the Chapter’s establishment of the Pamela B. Greenberg Volunteer of the Year Award of which Pamela was the first recipient. When her two terms ended she joined the national board of the Lupus Foundation of America where she chaired their Government Relations Committee. After a short break she rejoined the Chapter Board and now serves as Chair of the Governance Committee. Pamela is known for her commitment to the Chapter’s success and for always making sure that patients and their needs are front and center to everything the Chapter does.

Arthur Weinstein has been treating lupus patients since he was a medical student in Toronto about 50 years ago. He has worked and studied in Canada, England and the United States as a clinical rheumatologist, teacher and researcher, with lupus as a major focus of his activities. During this time he has been involved with the Lupus Foundation of America, almost since it started, when he was a junior faculty member at the University of Connecticut Medical School and one of its founding members, Marilyn Sousa, became a patient and close friend. He has had the honor to serve on many LFA Chapter committees and boards in Connecticut, New York and DC. Through these activities he has met so many with lupus, their friends and families and others who are dedicated to finding the cause and the eventual cure. The Lupus community here is so fortunate to have such a strong, smart and dedicated group who run the DC/MD/VA Chapter and he considers it a rare privilege to have been part of its growth and maturity.

Pamela B. Greenberg

Outstanding Volunteer Award The Pamela Greenberg Award for Outstanding Volunteer was established to recognize that LFA-DMV’s accomplishments are the shared effort of our small staff and many wonderful volunteers who give generously of their time and talents to support the chapter. It honors Pamela Greenberg, an incredible volunteer who serves as a current Board member and has served as Board Chair during a previous Board term. Currently she is Chair of the Board’s Governance Committee and Co-Chair of the 2015 Gala.

Janice Wolf-Easley has been instrumental to the Lupus Foundation in recent years. She first became involved with the Lupus Foundation in 2011 when the desire and need to know more about the disease and to meet other people with lupus brought her to our Chapter. Since then she has been involved in organizing the Purple Passion Gala, the Walk to End Lupus Now and organizes monthly dinners for her fellow support group members. She understands the importance of networking and listening to other patients and inspires the staff to always go above and beyond to help the lupus community.
