TOP STITCH it’s always refreshing to see a high-fashion house present by Dani Stahl
A collection that feels a bit undone in the best of ways. Such is the case for Prada’s spring ‘15 offerings adorned with simple, chunky topstiching, and abundant in a tattered-edged, gauzy materials that’s unraveling thorughout. This rough-hewn quality is balanced by ornate brocade accents incorporated into many of the pieces. heavy on the overcoats, knee-length frocks, and high-neckline tos, the range has definite ‘70s vibe, with a palette comprising lots os brown, yellow, orange, purple, green, and camel. It’s one of those collections with a bunch of disparate elements that somehow, weirdly and almost unexpectedly, all blend together in perfect harmony.

LAB WORK three nylon editors get their diy on at levi strauss & co.’s dreamy denim design playground. photographed by Will Styler Like something straight out of science fiction, a laser beam slowly travels down the pants leg of a crisp blue jean, wisps of smoke billowing up off the surface and leaving behing a perfectly roughed up look. Meanwhile, the denim washing machines nearby are generating ozone gas is more powerful oxidizer than your basic bleach, and using it helps waste less water. Next door, pots of natural fermentationindigo spill over like boiling stew. And across the room, a whole range of decidedly more lo-fi process are taking place: a cluster of busut tailors sew away at their machines, swatches are strewn about for side by side comparison, workers collaborate by digital printing station, and rigid jeans are mounted on an inflatable mannaquin contraption where sandpaper is applied by hand.

“Having the opportunity to customize jeans at the Eureka Lab is a once in a life time thing, so I wanted to take full advantage pf the offerings, especially since I’m minimally crafty myself. Once I saw the huge range of options there, I fully commited to the more is more approach. The fabric swatches for the patches were the initial inspiration – I loved the 70s/grandma feel of the florals and colors. From there I tried to balancethe septuagenarian vibe with some juvenile embroidery and appliques. At risk of the jeans becoming a bit tooo precious, I decidede to deface them a bit by adding a good amount of distressing and a sturdy VOMITFACE across the back waistband. Notwithstanding the time constraint, these are definitely the most fantastical and personal pair of jeans I’ve ever owned – I’m sure I’ll have them forever.” PREETMA SINGH
“You’ll never catch me trying to dress up denim. Jeans are historically a workwear pant, and I’ve always felt they should be worn with a certain air of git. So, i wanted my pair to have a kind of scrappy, hodgepodgey, punky vibe. In terms of washing and finish, I had the denim dyed black witha subtle crackle effect, and wrecked the knees. I also brought a few fun things to be affixed. The front featurs retro pins I found during one of my weekend strolls through Brooklyn Flea this past summer, an old high school varsity jacket patch from an East Village vintage shop near my appartment, and two tiny triangular badges I found at my parents house from when I was a Girl Scout in the second grade. but perhaps the most exciting element of these jeans is that they have markings on the inside showing they were produced at Eureka; no mainline Levi’s products have this.” LISA MISCHIANTI

CROWN JEWELS dani stahl marvels at the beauty that is bulgari. photographed by Kim Ohrling
One of the may things I love about jewelry is its uncanny ability to connect you to a certain place , a time in history, or even another person. In the collective consciousness,Bulgari harkens back to the age of 1960s silverscreen starlets, when glamorous women like Elizabeth Taylor became the unofficial faces of the line. But to me, Bulgari will always remind me of my mother, who has worn an amazing serpenti watch and a pretty pinky ring from the brand since I was a kid. I consider my infatuation with gem-laden jewelry an inherited trait, passed down from my mom. And I’ve been thinking about jewels a lot lately – even for me; since I recently got engaged, rocks I have really been on my mind. Do when I received an invite to jet over to Rome for a peek at the inner workings of Bulgari, it seemed wonderfuly fitting. Pluss, I’ve spent some quality time in Florence and Italy.
