DESIGN: 9 TO 5 OR DRIVE?

HEY THERE! GLAD YOU’RE HAVING A LOOK

My love for design began at quite a young age; as a ten-year-old I would regularly spend afternoons drawing covers for music mix disks by hand, only to find myself thinking that I could have done a better job, and re-start the process the following day until I was happy with the result. In time I discovered Flash (back then owned by Macromedia) and toyed with the idea that I could create cartoons on my home computer. After successfully producing the conventional “bouncing ball” animation, I enjoyed trying out many different animation experiments. After discovering some of the great Flash Portals on the web I began to experiment with Photoshop, where I initially created more detailed backgrounds for my animations. I also began to experiment with different 3D

software, and I eventually began to create models and short motion graphics with Cinema 4D. Eventually, design became a great personal interest of mine and I moved on to manipulating images and working on more detailed animations. Whilst attending postsecondary school I opted to take a short web-design course as part of my Systems of Knowledge course and kept on developing this “hobby”. Even though I was initially aiming to study dentistry, I decided to pursue my passion. Over the last couple of years I kept honing my skills and branching out onto different software such as After Effects and Illustrator. Collaborating with foreign musicians,

programmers and voice actors has also helped me to create more unique projects. The college also gave me numerous opportunities to put my skills into practice, most notably the 2010 Euroskills competition held in Portugal. Working with (and against) international creatives allowed me broaden my horizons and enabled me to enlarge my professional network. The different experiences I’ve lived through during the past few years (some of which are presented in this Editorial Exhibition) have helped me mature as a designer, both when working individually and when leading or contributing to a team.

PAINTING WITH PIXELS

DEEPWATER HORIZON Personal work Illustrator & Flash After much coverage of the BP Oil spill I decided to create a depiction of the BP Petroleum Beast controlling politics, society and nature.

IRON & WINE Personal work Illustrator & Flash How does one of the world’s greatest superheroes wind down after a day of crime-fighting?

LADY LLAMA Personal work Illustrator & Flash I wanted to apply the bubble illustration I had created for “Iron & Wine” (left) into another image; Lady Gaga’s Bubble outfit seemed like the perfect starting point for another humorous illustration.

LAST OF THE DOVAH Personal work Illustrator Inspired by the video game Skyrim and the constant references to “Arrows to the Knee.”

MA KONTX NAF... Traditional Inking & Digital Colouring Local Competition An information booklet designed for children to increase Internet safety Awareness. This project was initiated by the Maltese Commissioner for Children.

SINUS NOVEM Illustrator & Photoshop Bringing together the elegant nature of Art Nouveau with the angular properties of Urban design, Sinus Novem seamlessly merges both upper and lowercase glyphs to form dynamic words and phrases. Due to the elongated nature of the typeface it is perfect for application of branding projects or editorial headings.

VISUALISING THE SEVEN SINS Illustrator This series of images is my interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins, all of which have been designed as illustrated type.

THE TREES LIKE LUNGS Illustrator Initially inspired by Urban Illustrated Typography, I chose to give each word its own identity through Illustrated Type. This is a tribute to the electronic duo Air who composed the soundtrack for the film titled “The Virgin Suicides from which this quote was taken.

THE FULL MONTY

MALTA OIL BRANDING Illustrator, Photoshop & InDesign The concept behind the stationery and other corporate material encompasses the sleek qualities of a high profile company as well as concern for the environment.

PENGLAI IMMORTALITY PILL BRANDING & PACKAGING Illustrator, Photoshop & Cinema 4D This concept was designed with the aim of packaging an immortality pill; the brand name was borrowed from Asian mythology. Legend has it that Mount Penglai was the abode of the Eight Immortals. The product was specifically modelled and printed in 3D.

EUROSKILLS 2010 COMPETITION International Competition Illustrator, InDesign & Flash Back in November 2010 I competed in the Euroskills competition held in Portugal. The Graphic Design contestants were given the challenge of creating the identity, stationery, mascot and other promotional material for the NGO CERCIMB in a two 8-hour day time frame.

PROPOSAL: PROSPECTUS 2012/2013 Illustrator, Photoshop & Flash Final concept chosen by board The team I lead decided to propose a structured concept for the college prospectus, where the design produced revolved around a triangular theme. My personal challenge was to come up with ideas that were relatively unconventional in the local scenario; these included minimalistic layouts and high-speed photography covers for each institute. The prospectus is comprised of 10 branded folders, each of which contained an institute-specific booklet.

ANIMATED SHORTS

THE EVOLUTION OF MCAST: INSTITUTE OF ART & DESIGN Flash, Cinema 4D & After Effects I approached the evolution of the college by producing a short animated infographic. Since I was restricted to a minute’s duration, I attempted to create a tight animation that showed enough visual information that was also complemented by a voice-over outlining the history of the college.

3D MOTION GRAPHICS Cinema 4D & After Effects These images are stills taken from a series of 3D animation experiments. These tests involved working with various elements such as typography and object-oriented physics, amongst others.

CARAVAGGIO Flash These characters were designed and animated to be used in a group project, where my colleagues and I combined our artistic strengths to produce an interactive film.

MARK MAKING

CONQUEST REBRANDING Illustrator & InDesign Client work at Zheta International The idea behind the Conquest rebranding project was to create a colourful yet corporate identity for this paint company. The visual elements were created to represent the array of paint pots of different sizes as seen from above, as they enclose the typographic elements of the company’s logo.

N.E.S.A BRANDING

NATIONAL ENTERPRISE SUPPORT AWARDS

Illustrator Local Competition These were produced for a competition held by the N.E.S.A, where the task set was to create a logo that represents the new enterprises that, as new entrants, are successful in their respective field.

HOTEL LINE BRANDING Illustrator & InDesign Client work at Zheta International The simplicity of this logo reflects the commercial interests of the company, namely the importation of eco-friendly hygienic products.

PEACH & SORREL REBRANDING Illustrator, Photoshop & Flash Client work at Zheta International Keeping in mind that feelings of elegance and class were conveyed through the rebranding task, I experimented with sleek typography and smooth icon elements in the logomark.

GAME DESIGN

MOTEL 66 LIFEGUARD LARRY DELUXE 48 Hour Game Jam challenge Flash This game project was designed, animated and developed over a weekend. The team was composed of four randomly generated creatives. Each team had to create a game with the theme “Summer Heat. My team mates and I decided to pay homage to the classic command games, where the users were given a 60 second time limit to take the role of Lifeguard Larry and save a drowning kid.

VOYAGE OF THE FLYIN’ DUTCHMAN (ARCADE GAME)

Personal work Flash, Illustrator & Photoshop After working on “Lifeguard Larry” I decided to begin working on a concept for a new flash game. The idea was simple - Captain Crayfish (top right) is on a quest across the globe to retrieve his stolen leg from the Queen Mother. This arcade game is currently still in production.
