TBEYOND THE GLASS

he Club’s Food & Beverage Team has always taken pride in developing BCC's Wine Program. Phase 1 of the Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan was an opportunity to fully embrace the Club’s wine culture with the renovated clubhouse. The Five Farms clubhouse boasts 104 wine lockers, an impressive main bar (Trophy Bar), and a breathtaking Wine Room. The new facility allows for more expansive wine programming like SOMM Society, Uncorked, and the Wine Education series.

We are fortunate to have a skilled, passionate team of Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) educated staff who are available to offer recommendations in the dining room, assist with wine orders, and continue developing wine education opportunities for the membership. WSET is one of the world’s leading providers of education in the fields of wine, spirits, beer, and sake. We encourage the continued education of our team for their professional development and to improve the member experience.

ERIK ZMUIDINS

Director of Food & Beverage • WSET - Wine Level 2

Erik enjoys pairing wine with food. The proper pairing makes all the difference!

White Wine: Albarino from Rias Baixas, Spain, a dry German or Austrian riesling with a few years of age to pair with spicy Thai food, or a sancerre.

Red Wine: A bright pinot noir from Ribbon Ridge, Sonoma Coast, a burgundy to pair with duck, or a Howell Mountain cabernet or Left Bank wine from Bordeaux to pair with beef.

BRITTANY LEWIS

Assistant Food & Beverage Director • WSET - Wine Level 2

Brittany likes a bold, big bodied, California Cabernet and a light and crisp prosecco/champagne.

CHRIS TRAYNOR

Beverage Manager

Chris loves to learn about and try all wines! One of his top choices would be a bold cabernet from Paso Robles, California.

THAI YOGA BODYWORK

REFORMER PILATES

"Meredith's willingness to work and help anyone with anything is beyond my expectation. She learns quickly and improves her teaching skills. Meredith’s professional knowledge is getting better with every class. Her positive attitude is so impressive. Every class has been prepared and runs in the best way I have known. There is no boringness in the classes, there are always new or different elements and endless fun. I feel we are so lucky to have Meredith at BCC. If there’s anyone wondering what these classes are, I would strongly recommend you come and check them out!"

"As a senior woman golfer, I have found Thai Yoga Bodywork essential for any success I experience on the golf course. Lainey is an exceptional practitioner of her craft. The stretches, the positions, and the massages that Lainey executes helps to keep my body more limber so I can execute the swing dynamics called for in golf. Another added bonus—at my last physical I was informed by my doctor that I had added a ¼” to my height. That is always good news for a senior woman to hear!"

SWINGING TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

If you have been on or around the courses this year, you may have noticed that the Club has introduced water cartons as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic water bottles. These cartons are made from renewable resources such as paperboard, which is biodegradable and recyclable. By making the switch, the Club aims to significantly reduce its plastic waste while providing members and guests with a convenient and sustainable option. We also highly encourage members to utilize reusable water bottles. At the Golf Shop, you can purchase a wide variety of styles from brands like Corkcicle and Tervis. Water refill stations are available at the refreshment stands on the East and West courses, the restrooms at #11 East and #15 West, and behind the #5 West green. Coolers are located throughout the courses and rangers will be driving around with water available. Together, we can drive positive change, one swing at a time, and pave the way for a more sustainable future on and off the course.

THE CADDIE CORNER

The official start of the golf season is here, marked by the opening of the East Course and a palpable sense of excitement. Make this season the best yet by supporting the BCC Caddie Program. I'd like to introduce the members of our Caddie Committee and express our gratitude for their dedication:

2024 Caddie Committee

Joe Fields, Chair

Mike Mulieri, Golf Committee Liaison

Tim Codd

Don Hoelting

Brenda Jews

John Leahy

Sam Llanio

Frank Palmer

The committee has been diligently preparing for the start of the caddie season, during which we anticipate having between 70 to 75 caddies at BCC. Among these caddies, there will be approximately 40 youth caddies (8th to 12th grade) who could have the potential of earning the Evans Scholarship by meeting the scholarship criteria. You can identify them by their hunter green caddie bibs. There will be another 15 college age caddies and 15 adult caddies who will be wearing white bibs. Our current six Evans Scholars will be in the gold bibs.

Additionally, one of the initiatives of the Caddie Committee is to mentor these youth caddies in either obtaining the Evans Scholarship and or helping them develop the core values that caddying can bring later in life.

If a committee member, Caddie Manager Brett Keller, or I ask for your assistance in taking on a youth caddie, we hope you'll consider saying yes.

THE U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

The rst U.S. Open took place at Newport Country Club, on October 4, 1895, the day a er the inaugural playing of the U.S. Amateur, also at Newport Country Club. Only 11 golfers (including 10 professionals) competed. Horris Rawlings, from England, was the winner. Rawlings was presented with a sterling silver trophy commissioned for the Open. e trophy was 18 inches high, 6 inches in diameter with handles on both sides. It weighed 8.5 pounds. In 1946, the original was destroyed when the Tam O’Shanter clubhouse (home club of the Open winner that year) burned to the ground. An exact replica has been presented to each ensuing champion.

Charles H. Grasty, a principle investor in the Roland Park Company, made a point to be at the 1895 U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. e Roland Park Company was looking for an architect to layout a golf course for the urban community it was developing north of Baltimore City. Grasty invited Scottish professional and golf course designer, William Dunn, Jr., who was runner-up in the Open, to come to Baltimore. At a meeting in the Roland Park Company o ces, Dunn was commissioned to design the rst 18-hole golf course in Maryland that Edward Bouton, President of the Roland Park Company, had already named the Roland Park Golf Club. In February 1898, the Roland Park Golf Club became Baltimore Country Club of Baltimore City, Inc.

In April 1898, a USGA representative arrived to inspect Willie Dunn’s 4,876 yard bold layout. Shortly therea er, Lawrence Curtis, President of the United States Golf Association, announced that Baltimore Country Club was awarded the 1899 U.S. Open. It would be the biggest golf event south of Philadelphia.

Fi y-seven golfers, (more than half Scottish or English professionals) showed up to compete in the 5th United States Open – September 1415, 1899. Willie Smith, a Scotsman who immigrated to the United States to be the professional at Midlothian Country Club near Chicago, won by eleven strokes. William Dunn came in thirty-third. Club member, T. Courtney Jenkins, captured forty-eighth place. Baltimore Country Club’s rst professional, William Braid, who also immigrated from Scotland, nished forty-ninth.

Following the 1899 U.S. Open, Baltimore Country Club became internationally recognized as a place to play golf. Within 20 years, BCC was the largest private Country Club in America.

April through October 2024, we will be featuring a trophy from the Major Championships hosted at BCC. is trophy is on display in the Trophy Bar at Five Farms.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

As we begin a new fiscal year and golf season, the Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team is excited to share a few approved projects to improve the overall BCC golf experience including work we will be doing on the East Course Long-Term Maintenance Drainage Plan, initially developed in 2018 and implemented in 2019. This spring, weather permitting, we will focus on the drainage on hole #4 East, aiming to complete work by the start of the 2024 Golf Season. Additional drainage work on the #3, #7, and #18 approaches and the upper #11 fairway (near the green) will be completed in fall 2024.

Our Long-term Drainage Plan stems from the unprecedented rainfall of 2018 and 2019, exceeding annual averages by 33" and 14", respectively. After conducting an on-site assessment in October 2018, Turf Drainage Co. of America devised this plan and was contracted due to the company’s track record of solving complex drainage issues on golf courses throughout the United States. This plan, implemented by local golf course contractor McDonald & Sons, is a combination of excess water collection and transportation. This collection system consists of strategically placed open basins that collect excessive surface water before entering the fairway areas, further saturating the soil profile. These basins collect surface water and use their patented design to collect seepage water in the ground through the sidewalls. However, no surface collection system alone can adequately drain the course without a method to remove water that has saturated the soil and address water seeping from the ground (via springs) on holes completed such as #3, #7, #10, and #11.

An integral aspect of the plan involves establishing extensive seepage drain fields using Turf Drainpipe technology, renowned for its exceptional speed and efficiency in soil drainage. These drainpipes are installed within two to three-feet-deep trenches backfilled with straight sand and specifically engineered to meet our drainage needs. To date, 4.04 miles of pipe have been installed out of the over 15 miles in the plan.

The plan involves numerous phases throughout the years until completion. Ultimately, our objective is to maintain a consistently well-drained soil profile, foster healthy playing surfaces capable of withstanding summer stress periods, and create firmer playing surfaces that meet the expectations of our members and guests. Furthermore, this effort is geared towards reducing or eliminating the number of days carts are restricted on the East Course following rain events.

#4 ROUGH AFTER RAIN DRAINAGE WORK

Later this spring, additional cart path work will occur in the following areas on the West Course:

• Behind #1 and #7 green

• From the tee at #8 to the tee at #9

Additional details and photos will follow as work on the projects takes shape. In last month’s Lifestyle, I wrote about green aeration and dates that will be completed this spring. As a friendly reminder, aeration is necessary to relieve compaction, improve oxygen, stimulate new rooting in the soil, and improve water penetration and infiltration in the root zone. This year, our team has begun preparing for the summer stress season by aerating the West greens in late March by deep tine aerating with ½" solid tines, followed with 3/8" solid tines followed by sand topdressing to smooth the surface. Instead of aerating the West fairways, we will be vertical mowing or verticutting the fairways while the course is closed. East Course aeration is scheduled for April 30 through May 2. We will be pulling small 1/8" cores followed by a light application of sand topdressing on the greens. We will also be solid tine aerating and verticutting fairways while we are closed. As the season begins, each golfer can do their part to ensure the courses are at their best. This includes repairing ball marks, replacing your divots, following cart suggestions, and smoothing the sand from the bunkers following play.
