Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

Staff Member of the Month NOVEMBER 2023 Kyle Burke, Locker Room Attendant

Kyle has been at the Club for almost two years and has never skipped a beat while simultaneously pursuing a degree in Communications at Towson University. Kyle is a talented and motivated individual that is constantly looking for things he can improve in the locker room. He is a positive and reliable staff member that you can count on day in and day out. His work ethic goes above and beyond and continues to surpass expectations daily. Kyle embodies our theme of “One Team”, always willing to step in where help is needed and doesn’t shy away from trying something new.

Exceptional Leadership Award OCTOBER 2023 Ryan Moeller, Chief Engineer

Ryan is always positive and willing to help BCC no matter the challenge. Ryan has led, worked on, and completed numerous last-minute projects in his few years here. In October, he worked three late nights from home, building a 40' decorative perimeter around the stage for the 125th Anniversary Gala. A few days after building the stage panels, he had a request to build sides and a step to the hayride trailer that was rented for Boo Bash. Ryan leads by example, ensuring the Engineering Team stays informed of daily events and is quick to respond to daily requests in a friendly manner. Ryan has accomplished numerous tasks at BCC that could have easily been contracted out, such as demolishing and rebuilding the Tilly Porch and replacing siding on the East Refreshment Stand. Ryan goes out of his way to bring a smile to everyone he meets and always has a great attitude!

MEET ANDREA MILLAN Member Relations Manager

Andrea is a Towson native who has found her home in Canton, Maryland. She is a proud graduate of Towson High School and holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Andrea dedicated seven years to Bozzuto Management before embarking on a new chapter here at Baltimore Country Club. In April 2023, she tied the knot with her husband Grant in Puerto Rico. In her downtime, Andrea enjoys watching her favorite show Friends and shares her life with a rottweiler named Goose, inspired by the iconic Top Gun character. At Baltimore Country Club, Andrea oversees the Member Relations Team, dining reservations, and Club Event reservations. 1

Article VI, New Membership, Section 1. New Proposals, 1st paragraph

As of 1965, in the spirit of fostering a family centric atmosphere, a proposal for a married person cannot be accepted without including a proposal for such person’s spouse. As of February 2006 any single person who was admitted as a member must inform the Director of Membership of any subsequent marriage and the date it took place. As of February 2006 any member who remarries following death or divorce must inform the Director of Membership of the marriage and the date it took place. The member’s spouse must apply for membership in the Club within two years of the marriage. Provided, however, that if the member is younger than 28 years of age at the time of marriage, such new spouse’s membership proposal may be deferred for three years from the date of the marriage. If the spouse is invited into membership, payment of the initiation fee at the time of the invitation is required. There is no maximum threshold in place to pay future initiation fees for possible future marriages. If a single, widowed, or divorced member fails to properly notify the Club of his or her subsequent marriage and the date of the wedding, he or she will be referred to the Traditions committee for disciplinary action. It is the Member’s obligation to apprise the Club of the change in his or her marital status. A failure to abide by the foregoing could subject the member to expulsion pursuant to Article VI, Section 1 of the Constitution.

Article VII, Transfer of Membership, Section 7. Nonresident Membership

(a) A Resident member who has adopted a legal address that lies outside of fifty (50) miles distance from the Five Farms Clubhouse, 11500 Mays Chapel Road, Timonium, MD 21093 based on the average of the distances of the nearest three (3) available road systems and does not reside in or own or rent personally through an agent or another, a residence within that fifty (50) miles average distance of the three (3) nearest available road systems may transfer to Nonresident status in the manner provided for in this Article, provided that the member notifies the Board in writing of his or her intention to be a Nonresident for a period of at least one year from the date of such notice.

GROUNDS

February 2024

ebruary 29, 2024, marks the end of an era for Baltimore Country Club’s celebrated Horticulturist and longest tenured staff member, Laura Michel, who will be retiring after 44 years of attentive care to the gardens and grounds of Roland Park. If you have seen Laura hard at work, you know she is a dedicated and self-motivated person, always putting forth her best effort to perfect the little details that make Roland Park a favorite place for our members. But if you have had the pleasure of getting to know Laura on a personal level, you know it is her consideration and compassion for her fellow staff, members, wildlife, and feline friends that makes her stand out as one of the great people of BCC. Laura is a Baltimore native, growing up in Kingsville with two brothers, two sisters, and a heavy horticultural influence.

Her grandfather owned a commercial greenhouse in Parkville. Her family lived on a 30-acre farm, where her father tended his extensive formal gardens, and the kids had many opportunities to work and play outdoors. The love of horticulture was passed down through generations, so naturally after Laura graduated from Perry Hall High School, she earned a full scholarship to study Ornamental Horticulture at the University of Maryland. She graduated in 1980. After graduating, she was hired by Merrill Frank on May 29, 1980, to join the Grounds Team. Though she was first posted at Five Farms, the greater need was at the grounds of Roland Park, which had become somewhat overgrown since the golf course was sold in 1962. She took over in 1981, and has lovingly tended the grounds ever since.

GROUNDS

The children who searched for Easter eggs on the North Lawn when Laura was just learning the ropes are now bringing their own children to share in the outdoor tradition, and there’s Laura, carefully scheduling the planting of forced flower bulbs in outdoor flowerpots so their blooms are perfectly timed for the event. Though she will not appear in any wedding albums—it was her flower baskets, her manicured hedges, her gardens and grounds that have graced the photos of over 500 weddings since she started her career at Roland Park.

Laura has always treated Roland Park like it was her own and showed tremendous dedication to its upkeep over her 44 years. What does the future hold for Laura after BCC? She has not decided yet, but we wish Laura all the best as she transitions into the next stage of her life. Though she has always shied away from the spotlight, on February 27, there will be an intimate retirement celebration in her honor for those who might like to bid her farewell and thank her for her service to the Club.

...her gardens and grounds [have] graced the photos of over 500 weddings since she started her career...

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE It’s been a couple years since we had the need to distribute information regarding winter play on the greens due to the mild weather and lack of snow. However, in January we recent received over nine inches of snowfall within a 72-hour period. Prior to this weather event, freezing temperatures froze the soil throughout the property. Following the snow event, temperatures rose in the 60s, followed by additional rain measuring over one inch. Consequently, the West Course, practice putting areas, chipping greens, and family putting green were closed due to the recent weather events. As temperatures rise and the upper surface begins to thaw, this is when the upper portion of the rootzone becomes soft and unstable. Traffic from either maintenance or play can damage the underlying roots, while foot printing will negatively affect

playing conditions in the months to come. At this time of year, conditions can change rather quickly. Our staff will evaluate conditions on a daily basis and communicate to Nick and his team throughout the winter months on current course conditions for playability. Thank you for understanding.
