BCC YOUNIVERSITY
March 2025 marks the fifth year of our BCC YOUniversity program, designed to enhance the personal and professional growth of our staff. BCC YOUniversity provides a range of courses aimed at helping staff develop new skills, discover their passions, and learn from fellow staff, members, and special guests. Each month, staff can select from a variety of classes to fulfill their required annual credit amount, based on their employment status.
As we prepare next year’s course catalog, we are excited to introduce new and engaging class content—and we’re looking for your help to diversify the program further. Courses are grouped into Member Engagement, BCC Enrichment, and Personal Enrichment. Popular offerings have included Member Engagement opportunities and surprise guest speaker sessions. Since the program’s inception, we’ve been fortunate to have several BCC members share their expertise by teaching courses, and we hope to continue that tradition this year.
If you are connected to any local or national people of renown who would be willing to participate as a surprise guest, or if you are interested in teaching a course relating to your profession, personal interests, or hobbies, please contact Director of Human Resources Lauren Kourtsounis at lkourtsounis@bcc1898.com.

NEW THIS SPRING
FRESH EVENTS YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS
Though it’s winter, the Events Team is hard at work finalizing plans for an exciting spring season—and we’re thrilled to share a few new events with you!
First, following the success of the PreTeen Gingerbread Decorating event in December, we will continue to provide programming targeted specifically for this age group. While many events are for families of all ages, we recognize that pre-teens don’t always want to tag along with younger siblings. That’s why we’re hosting two separate Valentine’s-themed events this year: Sweetheart Soiree and Pre-Teen Valentine's Sock Hop. The Sweetheart Soirée is an event geared towards our youngest members, while the brand-new Pre-Teen Valentine’s Sock Hop is perfect for middle schoolers. What’s a Sock Hop, you ask? It’s a retro-themed dance party complete with milkshake and soda stations—perfect for a night of fun and nostalgia. While the kids are at the event, parents can make an À la Carte reservation to dine in the 1898 Grille.
Second, last year’s Father-Daughter Dance, which will be returning again this year, was so much fun that we had to let moms and sons get in on the action. Get ready to kick up your heels at the Mother-Son Western Rodeo on Saturday, April 5. With mechanical bull riding and lasso lessons, this will be a night you won’t forget! Dust off your boots and don your cowboy hats—we reckon this event will be a rootin’-tootin’ good time. Yee-haw!
Lastly, for the adults, we’re introducing our first-ever Adult Easter Egg Hunt on Friday, April 18, for ages 21 and older. You can take a guess on the prizes—so keep an eye out, as this one has limited space.
As always, our team is dedicated to bringing fresh, creative events to the Club while enhancing current offerings. If you have a great idea for a new event, we’d love to hear it. Your input helps us make each season even better.
RSVP: Club Calendar • Cancellation policy applies unless stated otherwise • *Complimentary for children under 4

EAT THE R A I N B O W
By Caroline Fitzsimmons, Certified Nutrition Coach
New Year’s resolutions are full of plans to lose weight, get in shape, and eat healthy. Now that it is February, have you stayed true to your goals?
Whether you’re staying strong or struggling to stay on track, it’s never too late to start taking care of your health! What you eat can influence many aspects of heart health, including blood pressure, inflammation, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides. To give your resolutions a boost, try adding fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats to your daily meal plan. Each ingredient has key nutrients that will help keep your heart healthy.
FRUITS & VEGETABLES
Eat a variety of colors like berries, peppers, spinach, oranges, eggplant, mushrooms and more to help reduce blood pressure and inflammation.
WHOLE GRAINS
Oats, whole wheat breads, quinoa, and brown rice contain more fiber and nutrients than refined grains. They act as a line of defense against heart disease through reductions in cholesterol, blood pressure, and plaque buildup in the arteries.
NUTS & SEEDS
Almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are full of healthy fats, protein, and fiber.
FATTY FISH
Salmon, mackerel, and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are excellent for heart health.
LEGUMES
Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are great sources of protein, fiber, and other nutrients.
HEALTHY FATS
Olive oil, avocado, and nuts are sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that can help lower bad cholesterol levels.
DARK CHOCOLATE
Dark chocolate that is at least 70% cocoa can benefit heart health due to its antioxidants (in moderation, of course).
GREEN TEA
The antioxidants in green tea can help improve blood vessel function.
COLOR CHART OF NUTRIENTS
Each fruit and vegetable color reflects unique phytonutrients that may prevent chronic diseases and boost health. Explore which phytonutrients align with each color and their benefits.
Red foods are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals that combat cancer, protect the heart, and reduce inflammation and free radicals.
Orange and yellow foods are rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, and vitamin C, support eye health, skin, immunity, and heart health.
Green foods are rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants that fight cancer, boost energy and cognition, support blood and bone health, and aid detoxification.
Blue and purple foods promote longevity, protect against oxidative stress, and help prevent heart disease, cancer, cognitive decline, and type 2 diabetes.
White and brown foods offer cancer-fighting, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting benefits.
Maintaining a heart-healthy diet is essential for overall wellbeing and longevity. Variety is key, so choose something different with every meal.
If you need help staying on track with your eating goals or have questions about how to incorporate more heart healthy foods into your diet, reach out to Caroline at cfitzsimmons@bcc1898.com for a consultation!
FIND BALANCE IN FEBRUARY
By Rebecca Printen, Therapeutic Yoga Instructor
February is all about “Finding Balance.” We’re past the busy holiday season and heading into spring. What if we used this month for introspection? What if we asked ourselves, “How did the holidays go for me?” or “What would I do differently next year?” February offers an opportunity to reflect and find more balance in our lives. In a yoga class, we often work on physical balance, which has numerous benefits, but what about exploring balance in other areas of our lives?
⊲ Balance in exploring and staying still
⊲ Balance in wisely using what we know and learning something new
⊲ Balance in healthy and unhealthy
⊲ Balance in activity and rest Balance is so much more than standing on one foot. Balance is also awareness, steadiness of the mind, and making conscious decisions. Life can feel a bit wobbly sometimes, why not take some time this month to cultivate more balance in our lives?
For more information or to schedule a private yoga session, contact Rebecca at rprinten@bcc1898.com.
MOVES OF THE MONTH
with Jessica Taylorson, Personal Coach
PLANK WITH SLIDE REACH USING GLIDERS
This exercise will help with stability and core strength. Repeat 10 reaches each arm
1. Start in a plank position with your hands on the gliders (Modification: plank on your forearms)
2. Keep a neutral spine by holding your core tight and squeezing your glutes. You can place your feet wider to create a base of support that makes it easier to maintain a neutral and stable pelvis
3. Move the arms forward and back, alternating between the right and left arm
SIDE LUNGE WITH SHOULDER PRESS
This exercise works the muscles in your legs, biceps, and shoulders and helps with balance.
8-10 reps
1. Holding a dumbbell in your right hand, step out shifting your weight onto your left leg keeping your hips back, chest up, and neutral spine. The left side should feel as if you are sitting onto a chair with the right leg long
2. Reach your right hand towards your left foot, then push off your left foot to stand back up while pressing your right arm over your head then switch sides
SPRING PGA JR. LEAGUE
PGA Jr. League is set to begin April 1 through June, with exact dates to be announced soon. This season offers young golfers the chance to develop their skills, experience the camaraderie of team play, and engage in friendly competition. All skill levels are welcome, but some golf experience is preferred.
PRACTICES
The season will consist of nine weeks (Tuesday-Friday) of practice starting Tuesday, April 1, with practice times available from 3:30pm-4:30pm, 4:45pm-5:45pm, or 6:00pm-7:00pm. Golfers are encouraged to select all times that work for them during registration to ensure optimal groupings based on age and skill level. Practices will be conducted in groups of six or fewer players, providing an intimate learning environment where golfers receive individualized attention and focused coaching. Your practice group does not determine your team.
MATCHES
Matches will take place on Saturday afternoons (times TBA). Players will compete in a two-person scramble format, where each pair hits their shots, selects the best result, and continues the process until the ball is holed. The scramble format is key in allowing everyone to hit shots and contribute to the team. PGA Jr. League utilizes match play scoring, which focuses on performance versus a score-to-par as is traditional with golf.
Within a PGA Jr. League game, pairs play in a head-to-head, 9-hole match. Each match is broken into three flags. Each flag is three holes in a row, and each team has the opportunity to earn points at the end of each flag.
NEW THIS SEASON
TRAVEL TEAMS
For players wishing to compete at a higher level, there will be two travel teams: the East Team and the West Team, each consisting of 12 junior golfers. The East Team will be made up of Level 5 Operation 36 students or higher, with the remaining spots filled by a qualifying round in March. The West Team will consist of Level 4 Operation 36 students or higher, with additional players determined by the same qualifying round. These travel teams will travel to local clubs to compete, with the goal of making a postseason run.
TILLY LEAGUE
For those not placed on a travel team, there will be the Tilly League, an in-house developmental league. This league will consist of weekly matches and Operation 36 testing opportunities. Players will also have the chance to track their progress on a FedEx Cup-style leaderboard and develop their skills on the West Course. The Tilly League is perfect for junior golfers looking to improve and eventually qualify for the travel teams in the future.
This season is designed to inspire junior golfers to set goals, embrace the competitive side of the game, and enjoy the process of growing as athletes and individuals. Whether participating in the travel teams or the Tilly League, every golfer will have the opportunity to make memories, develop skills, and engage in friendly competition.
REGISTRATION & COSTS
Cost: $400 per Junior Travel team members will also need to pay an additional $110 fee for PGA Jr. League registration
RSVP: Golf Genius
During registration, please select all practice times/days that work for you to help facilitate group assignments
If you have any questions about PGA Jr. League or any of our junior programming, contact Junior Golf Professional Jake Thompson at jthompson@bcc1898.com.
We’re looking forward to a fantastic spring season ahead!

CADDIE CORNER
As we prepare for the 2025 golf season, I want to take a moment to recap some amazing information from 2024. I encourage every member to embrace the tradition and experience of using a caddie. These numbers reflect the positive influence our Caddie Program has on the Club and the lives of the young people it supports. Take, for example, the story of one of our Evans Scholars, Rebecca Lannon, who is now entering her final semester at the University of Maryland. Scan the QR code to read about her experience. Her success is a testament to the opportunities this program provides. Take a caddie, change a life.
Whether you’re walking the course with a caddie or partnering with a youth caddie, your participation helps us grow the program and extend its benefits even further. Thank you for making 2024 a remarkable year, and I can’t wait to see how much more we can accomplish together this year!
Greg Jones, PGA Professional Emeritus
▶ Short Game Workshops: Refine your skills with our quarterly workshops, led by renowned instructors who will help you master the art of putting, chipping, pitching, and bunker play

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
Winter has finally arrived with a significant snowfall blanketing the MidAtlantic region with six to 10 inches of snow in early January followed by three to four inches a week later. While snowfall can be disruptive, it also provides a protective insulating layer for plants, shielding them from extreme cold and harsh winds. As a result of these conditions, the West Course, practice putting and chipping greens, and the family putting green were closed. Prior to the snowfall, freezing temperatures had already caused the soil across the property to freeze.
This time of year brings unique challenges for course management. A key concern arises when temperatures rise, causing the surface of the soil to thaw while the ground beneath
PUTTING GREENS
PLAY ON FROSTED GREENS
Frost-covered turf on putting greens is susceptible to immediate damage from traffic. When foot traffic occurs on heavily frosted turfgrass surfaces, entire plants can be killed, leaving footshaped patches of dead turf.
PLAY ON FROZEN GREENS
Cool-season grasses will not be growing and their ability to recover from traffic through growth is lost. There is a concern that foot traffic on frozen greens will cause more rapid wear injury under these conditions.
PLAY ON THAWING GREENS
Foot traffic under thawing conditions can cause root shearing at the interface between the thawed and frozen soil, causing damage to the root system. Additionally, minor-to-severe foot rutting can occur, causing short-term and possibly long-term surface-smoothness issues.
remains frozen. This prevents proper drainage, leaving the upper soil soft and unstable. Foot traffic or maintenance activity during these conditions can damage roots and negatively impact playing conditions in the months ahead.
We know many members will be eager to return to the West Course and practice areas once the snow melts, and we appreciate your patience as we navigate these winter conditions. Our goal is to protect the health of the course to ensure excellent conditions throughout the coming season.
Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper
TEES, FAIRWAYS, & ROUGH
PLAY ON THAWING OR FROZEN TURF
Northern golf courses not only go through the freeze-thaw process regularly, but they also are prone to being very wet or soggy in the late winter and early spring. Both foot traffic and cart traffic can inflict serious damage to the turf and soil in the form of ruts and compaction. Root shear is also possible at the interface between frozen and thawed soil.
For additional details on winter play and its challenges, scan the QR code to read an article from the USGA Green Section that provides helpful insights into these scenarios.
COACH’S CORNER
with Wade Johnstone, Director of Squash
WATCHING THE BALL
It's a common mistake with beginners and players transferring over from other sports like tennis to not watch the squash ball and to watch only the front wall. The problem with watching the front wall is that by the time your eyes pick up the ball it’s usually coming off the front wall and doesn’t give you much time to react (less than a second). I’ve also heard and read reports that you should use just your peripheral vision to watch the ball. Either my eyesight and peripheral vision is really bad or it’s simply not true as once again without a clear view of the ball and your opponent’s body position, it’s very difficult to know when to react and where to move.
So when you are on the ‘T’, your body should be facing towards the front wall with your shoulders slightly turned to the side the ball is on and you can watch the ball and your opponent with both eyes.
