FITNESS & WELLNESS

FORMING HEALTHY

HABITS, WE ALL HAVE THEM. Good ones, bad ones, some that serve us, and some that don’t. Heading into the new year offers the opportunity to look at our habits, and perhaps choose to change one or two. Rather than focusing on trying to change bad habits, maybe we start by adding in good habits. I’ve found from personal experience, that by adding good habits, it becomes easier to let go of the bad ones. Here are a few of my favorite good habits. Try one at a time—not all of them at once—to help cultivate a healthy 2024:

EXERCISE

Do I really need to say why? We all know it’s good for us. Stay motivated by finding an exercise buddy or trying a fun new class. A habit of exercise just might replace a Netflix binge habit.

BE IN NATURE

Find a place not too far from home. Walk, breathe, take in the sights and smells two times a week. The nature habit might replace an expensive online shopping habit.

HYDRATE

If you use a quart size bell jar, it’s an easy way to keep track of how much you drink, and this varies from person to person. In winter, water can be warm tea instead. This water habit might replace a Starbucks habit which can be unhealthy and expensive.

EAT BALANCED MEALS

Smoothies and tea are great, but they don’t count as a real meal. Three times a day, we need to refuel our body. Cultivate good habits like adding steamed veggies into your morning eggs or on your lunchtime salad. Don’t worry so much about what not to eat, just focus on adding good things in. A steamed veggie habit could replace a processed foods habit.

PUT YOUR LEGS UP THE WALL

If I could bottle this pose, I would, and I would give it to everybody! The yogis call it “the reversing process.” It’s an amazing way to relax and correct imbalances in the body. The benefits of regularly stimulating the relaxation response should not be underestimated, and I know of no other pose that does it better. A legs up the wall habit just might replace a lying on the couch for too long habit.

GO TO BED BY 10:00PM

By Rebecca Printen, Yoga Therapist 6

January 2024

Start by being aware of how much better you feel when you are truly rested. In Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, it’s taught that 10:00pm is when our body goes into repair and restore mode. In Chinese medicine, it’s taught that every hour you sleep before 12:00am, is equal to two hours of sleep! Sleep is GOOD! Getting to bed on time might replace the habit of scrolling on your phone until late at night once you are aware of how much better your body and mind function the next day. Try adding these good habits in and see what bad habits you easily let go of.

ACUPUNCTURE Is your resolution for 2024 to become your happiest, healthiest self? Try acupuncture! Acupuncture can help you reach your selfcare goals this year. Some of the most common New Year's goals often include ways to become our best selves—reaching weight and fitness goals, living a less stressed, more joyful life, and letting go of habits that no longer serve us. Acupuncture can help with each of these goals. It can improve circulation which in turn improves digestion, positively influencing weight. Acupuncture is a great choice for reducing inflammation in the body, keeping you on track with your fitness goals. It helps you de-stress by encouraging the release of the "feel good" hormones throughout your body. Lastly, acupuncture can ease the withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking cessation.

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER’S

UPDATE It's officially winter, and another weather record has been broken with the longest period of time with no snow accumulation at BWI airport (672 days). In fact, the last measurable snow of at least one inch occurred on January 28, 2022, and January 23, 2016, was the last snow event of 10˝ or more (29.2˝). How much snow will we receive in the winter of 2024 based on the strong El Niño weather pattern? Several experts are predicting more snow than the average, but predicting exactly how much is quite unpredictable and somewhat humorous. One of the weather sites I visited predicted an equal chance that we have above-normal, normal, or below-normal precipitation for the winter season! Regardless of how much snow we receive, winter is still cold, and we look forward to your visit to both Five Farms and Roland Park to enjoy your time near the roaring fireplaces. Did you know that all the wood is sourced from trees in decline at Five Farms and seasoned and split by our Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team? So far this season, we have burned 10.5 cords of wood, as a cord of firewood is 4' high by 4' wide by 8' long. Now that both clubhouses are open in the winter, we expect to use approximately 18 to 20 cords. When spring arrives and we

What is an

are no longer burning wood, other than the outdoor fire pits, our goal is to have 22 cords split so it can season and be ready for the 2025 season. Wishing everyone a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper

El Niño is a climate pattern associated with warmer temperatures in the northern U.S. and wetter weather in the South. El Niño—which means “little boy” in Spanish—got its name from South American fishermen who first noticed periods of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean in the 1600s. During an El Niño pattern, winter means the chances for warmerthan-average temperatures across the northern states increase, while conditions in the Northeast will be wetter than in the West and Midwest.

MEET IRENE CASAREZ

OUR NEW FIVE FARMS HORTICULTURIST My father has a landscaping business in Delaware, which I helped him with growing up, so maintaining lawns and gardens has always been a part of my life. When I met my husband, who lives and works in Baltimore City, I decided to relocate here to go back to school and follow my passion. I graduated from CCBC with an associate degree in Sustainable Horticulture as well as several certifications, including Greenhouse/Agricultural Production and Landscape Installation, Maintenance, & Design. I am Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional Certified (Level 1) and am currently studying to take the Certified Professional Horticulturist exam in the coming year. Additionally, I am pursuing a B.S. in Environmental Sustainability at University of Baltimore. In my free time, I love traveling with my dog, visiting botanical gardens and religious architecture with my husband, and engaging with my community at the community garden or local shows. I couldn’t be more excited to join the BCC team!

This two-hour time block Monday through Friday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm will be geared towards players who are looking to take their tennis game to the next level. The academy-style training will incorporate high intensity drills, rally and match play experience, and weekly progressions.
