Great People Make Favorite Places

BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

Exceptional Leadership Award

Kevin Keller, Executive Sous Chef

Since August of 2016, Kevin has been a valued member of the BCC team. Initially hired as an Assistant Restaurant Chef, he rapidly progressed up the ranks to become Chef Jallet’s right-hand man. Kevin’s work ethic is unparalleled, and he has made invaluable contributions to both the daily operations and long-term BCC Culinary Program. His passion for his craft is evident at all times, and BCC members have the opportunity to experience it on a daily basis.

Jessica Noffsinger, Graphic Designer

During her four-year tenure at BCC, Jess has become an integral part of the team. Even though her work mostly happens behind the scenes, her passion for design permeates throughout the Club. It’s been incredibly gratifying to witness her growth as both a designer and a professional. From creating the impressive BCC pizza box to crafting the logo for Five Farms Dining, and designing eye-catching ads, flyers, and brochures—there are no limits to Jess’ creativity. Her willingness to learn and eagerness to help staff and members is admirable. It has been incredibly satisfying to see Jess step up and take the lead on projects, bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the table. For Jess, above and beyond certainly is the standard. Her contributions have been nothing short of outstanding, and it is an honor to be able to recognize Jess as one of the emerging leaders at BCC!

Simple Truth Award

A member recently informed a few of our staff that they would not be visiting the Club for a few weeks because they were getting a kidney transplant. Three staff members, namely Carmina, Brittany, and Patricia, took immediate action to ensure the member felt love from the Club. The trio organized a card and a road trip snack bag along with a Club-branded blanket. Patricia and Carmina also helped arrange a special activity for the member's family. Carmina went the extra mile and sent a joint birthday cake to the couple who celebrated their birthdays in March while in North Carolina. This collective effort made the member feel extremely supported and showcased the impact of fostering genuine relationships with our members.

HOW TO BREATHE PROPERLY

Did you know most of us don’t know how to breathe properly? Breathing is a natural part of living and is often not something we pay much attention to. But how we breathe can affect much more than we realize, everything from physical health, sleep quality, energy level, mood, and so much more. Most people breathe very shallow and light, breathing into the chest only. To help compensate, the body will often use a variety of accessory muscles to breathe deeper, including the neck, chest, and back, which can cause muscle tension over time.

Want to see if you are breathing properly? Find a comfortable position lying flat on your back with your feet on the floor and knees up or sitting straight up with your back against a wall or chair. Place one hand on your heart and the other on top of your belly under your ribcage. Take a few moments to breathe naturally. After a few breaths, begin to notice which hand is moving the most, the hand on your belly, chest, or both.

If your hand on your belly is moving the most, congratulations! You are using your diaphragm, the thin muscle below the lungs and heart that separates the chest from the abdomen, and a major muscle in respiration. If the hand on your chest or both are moving, you are among the millions of people who are not breathing correctly. There is good news! Yoga incorporates breathwork to help increase breath awareness in the body.

BELLY BREATHING

Belly breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing, is a technique known to reduce stress, increase oxygen retention, reduce blood pressure, and reduce heart rate. This practice will help you feel like you are receiving a full breath and can be done anywhere or anytime.

Give it a try:

1. Lay flat on your back with your feet on the floor and knees up or sit straight up with your back against a chair or wall. Notice your regular pattern of breathing

2. Before you begin, place both hands on top of your belly under your ribcage and bring your awareness to the belly

3. On an inhale, visualize the breath going up the nose, down the throat, into the chest, and continue to send the breath down into your belly. Feel your belly expand and notice your hands move further apart from each other

4. On an exhale, release the breath from the belly, send it up into the chest, back up the throat, and release the breath through the nose or mouth. Allow the belly to draw closer back towards your spine and feel your hands come closer together

5. Notice how it feels in your body as you fully expand and contract the belly. Notice your fingers as they draw away from each other with each inhale and come back together with each exhale

6. When you are finished, return to your normal pattern of breathing. Notice any sensations in the body

6 July 2023 FITNESS & WELLNESS

Travel Like a Yogi

Whether you’re hitting the road, sailing the open seas, or flying the friendly skies, here are some yoga tips to help you stay energized, ease tension, and get a well-being boost on your travels. No matter where your journey takes you, yoga and other exercises can help keep you in tip-top shape on your adventures.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Going on a road trip? Squeeze in full-body stretches before sitting for long hours in the car.

• While behind the wheel, shift side to side in your seat. These small wiggles can relieve tense muscles and any accumulated stress on the spine

• Make frequent stops to walk around. Stretch your tight hip flexors, hamstrings, and lower back. Try a few heel raises, then step as far back as you can with one foot, stretching the front hip flexor. Rotate your hips in circles, and bend into a forward fold to stretch the entire back body

• Upper body stretches that counter the body’s seated position will help release stress and tension, helping you feel re-energized before you hit the road again. Try lifting both arms overhead as you inhale, then bring them down as you exhale. Do this a few times, then rotate your shoulders forward and backward to bring blood flow to those tight areas in the neck and shoulders

SHIP-SHAPE CRUISING

All-you-can-eat buffets and limited activity can throw your digestive system off. Keep moving! Take advantage of the daily activities offered to keep you fit while cruising.

• Try something new! Take a yoga class, enjoy aqua Zumba, cardio boxing, or cycling while on board

• A ship railing doubles nicely as a ballet bar. Hold the bar with one hand for balance as you do side leg lifts or side body stretches. Facing the bar, step back with both feet. As you hold the bar with both hands, pull your tailbone back, stretching your spine as you breathe

• Every evening, before heading to dinner, spend five to 10 minutes with your legs up the wall. This will reverse blood and lymph flow and give you more energy for the evening

FLY AWAY!

Unexpected delays and long waits can feel frustrating, but also a way to squeeze in some pre-board movement.

• Rather than sitting and scrolling, walk the length of the concourse

• Stiff shoulders and backs may need some extra attention from lugging heavy suitcases and backpacks. Try some gentle spine rotations and arms circles out to the sides while you still have ample room to stretch

• Once you are seated, try some ceiling reaches, rotate wrists and ankles. Point your toes, then flex them. Many airlines now offer stretches and meditations on the in-flight entertainment screen

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

May was a great month for golf and coolseason grasses as temperatures remained ideal with cool mornings and warm days with low humidity. Conditions remained very dry, with only .51˝ of rain for the month compared to the average of 3.85˝. As of the end of May, we remain nearly 6˝ below normal precipitation for the year at our Five Farms campus. Unfortunately, there will be a return of high heat and humidity to the Mid-Atlantic area as we head into the heart of the “dog days of summer” season.

The fairways are healthy and thriving under the existing cool and dry weather conditions, and rooting is excellent at four plus inches. As both soil and surface temperatures increase, it does reach a point where it negatively affects the root and shoot (top) growth of the cool-season grasses (bentgrass, poa annua, ryegrass, tall fescue). The turf goes under stress rather rapidly under certain weather conditions, such as heavy rains during periods of high heat and humidity. When this happens, the soils become waterlogged (lack of oxygen), and roots diminish rapidly.

When rooting diminishes on the cool-season surfaces (greens, fairways, and East tees), to ensure our courses are in top condition, our staff will apply light applications of water during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am to 6:00pm) to ensure the survival of the turf under stress. If you encounter staff on the courses while playing, please do not hit from the tee or to the green until they are completely out of the way. If a staff member is unaware of your presence, please alert them before playing your shot, as the safety of our staff is of utmost importance. We thank you for your patience, courtesy, and consideration of our team.

With warm-season grasses, it is the exact opposite. On the areas planted in these grasses (West Course and Driving Range tees and fairways), the warm-season grasses actually thrive during periods of high soil and surface temperatures. They are unaffected when areas become wet and waterlogged, similar to the cool-season turf.

With the mild winter and spring seasons, we witnessed a proliferation in poa annua or annual bluegrass on the playing areas. Programs are in place to apply plant growth regulators to weaken the annual bluegrass while encouraging bentgrass to fill in the voids. This has worked to some degree, but we continue to see more of the poa annua on the East fairways, greens,

and belt cut surrounding the greens. Thankfully, with the heat of summer, much of this is the annual biotype that should die off; however, many of the biotypes remain and are becoming a perennial problem.

In 2019, the EPA approved a product called Methiozolin, or PoaCure, after more than ten years of testing at numerous universities and golf facilities. Last year, we treated nearly 11 acres of fairway turf (areas on East and West courses) and have modified that program to just East Course greens for the coming season. The plan is to apply three to five applications per year, and the best outcome when using this product is to have all the treated areas “melt” away while the desirable bentgrass fill in the voids left behind. Indeed, patience will

be required as this is a slow transition (two to three years); however, early reports suggest this material will be a good tool in the ongoing battle against poa annua. Regarding fairways, the cost of the product has become cost prohibitive. Other strategies, such as growth regulators and pre- and postemergent material, will be utilized on this annual weed. Have a great summer, and we appreciate your support and consideration for the safety and well-being of our team.

Maryland Golf Hall of Fame

The Maryland State Golf Association was established during a meeting at the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore on March 8, 1921. BCC was a founding member. The Maryland Golf Hall of Fame, instituted in 2019, was created to recognize and enshrine men and women who, as Marylanders, have made extraordinary contributions to the game of golf. Four members of Baltimore Country Club are among these talented golfers: B. Warren Corkran, Roland R. MacKenzie, John A. “Jack” Emich and Mary Ann Downey Cooke.

B. WARREN CORKRAN, JR.

From 1907 through the 1930s

Warren Corkran was known as one of the finest golfers in America. He captained the Princeton team and went on to graduate from Harvard Law, in 1910, where he was a standout competitor. Three years later, Warren was ranked as the fourth best amateur in the United States. He won the first Maryland State Amateur Golf Championship in 1921, was a medalist in 1923 and won again in 1928 and 1932. He also holds titles to two Middle Atlantic Golf Association Championships —1913 and 1914. Cockran won the

Maryland Open in 1922 and the Senior Amateur in 1937 and 1938. In all, Warren Corkran won over twenty-six regional titles. Among these were four BCC championships. He was a four-time winner of the Maryland Cup, an invitational, sponsored by Baltimore Country Club that brought the best international amateurs to Maryland. One of his Maryland Cup victories was over the legendary Francis Ouimet, the father of amateur golf in America. Ouimet is the subject of one of Sam Robinson’s paintings. It is displayed in the north lobby of the Five Farms clubhouse and on pages 29 and 30 in the publication, The Paintings of Baltimore Country Club. In 1952, Cockran donated the Maryland Cup trophy, earned after his third consecutive win, to the Club where it is on display in the hallway trophy case along with the Rosen Cup and the men’s and ladies championship trophies. For three decades, B. Warren Corkran was heralded as the ambassador of Maryland golf.

ROLAND R. MACKENZIE

At the age of 17, MacKenzie qualified for his first of eight United States Amateur Championships earning a reputation as one of America’s most talented golfers. In an era of wooden shafts, Roland could launch a drive three hundred yards. Bobby Jones, watching MacKenzie during a U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club, commented that Roland was as good a ball striker as he had ever seen. In 1926, when he was

a 19 year old freshman at Brown University, MacKenzie was chosen to be a member of America’s Walker Cup Team along with Bobby Jones, Francis Ouimet, Jesse Sweetser and George Von Elm. Roland would be named to the United States Walker Cup Team two more times compiling a match record of five wins and one loss. He was Middle Atlantic Amateur Champion in 1925 and 23 years later in 1948. MacKenzie amassed a gaggle of regional titles including four Maryland State Father-Son Championship with Clark, a former BCC member. In 1965, he won the Senior Amateur Championship at Baltimore Country Club. He won both the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur in 1924 and the Open Championship in 1925, earning him a place in the MidAtlantic Golf Hall of Fame.

JOHN A. “JACK” EMICH

For four decades, no Marylander had a greater impact on golf, locally or nationally than Jack Emich. At Baltimore Country Club, Jack was golf. He was the longest serving chairman of the golf committee and during his eight years

The Match

On Sunday, April 29, 1928, Roland MacKenzie and B. Warren Corkran played Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones and Watts Gunn in a match on the Roland Park course. Over three thousand golf enthusiasts, from as far away as Atlanta, Georgia and New York City, watched the four champions play to a draw on the 18th green. The story and painting can be found on pages 25 and 26 in: The Paintings of Baltimore Country Club.

as a Board member was golf committee liaison. He qualified for both the British and U.S. Amateur Championships and won the Club’s Men’s Championship seven times.

Jack was president of the Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) and the Middle Atlantic Golf Association (MAGA). Beginning in 1960, he served as Secretary and Executive Director of the MSGA, was on the board of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association and was the Maryland representative to the USGA for more than 30 years. During his tenure, public courses were brought into the association, the Women’s Association was established and emphasis was given to the growth of women’s and junior golf.

Jack is credited with securing the 1965 Walker Cup at Baltimore Country Club. He served as Chairman. Former president Dwight David Eisenhower was Honorary Chairman. In 1989, Jack was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Golf Hall of Fame. In addition to other tributes, in 2000, Jack received the United States Golf Association’s highest honor, presented for extraordinary service to the game of golf in America—The Joseph C. Dey Award. In 1985, when Jack received the USGA’s Isaac B. Grainger award, John Steadman, the late Baltimore Sun Sports Columnist, wrote: A man from Baltimore named Jack Emich is a tower of decency who has elevated golf in a highly personal way and dignified the game by his presence.

Baltimore Country Club. She won the Club Championship twice—the only two times she played. Mary Ann was a member of the BCC women’s golf team that, beginning in 1946, went undefeated for twenty years. In recognition of her Club, regional and national accomplishments, the Baltimore Country Club’s women’s Championship trophy was named for and is presented in Mary Ann’s honor.

MARY ANN DOWNEY COOKE

In 1979, Mary Ann, recognized as the greatest woman amateur golfer ever from Maryland, was inducted into the Maryland States Sports Hall of Fame. These forty-five years since, the little golfing phenomenon, her father nicknamed Edi-Bitty, from Forrest Park, still holds that distinction. Mary Ann was a 50-year member of

By 1948, Mary Ann turned her focus to regional and national competitions. Among her more than forty titles, she was a twelve-time winner of the Women’s Golf Association Championship, five time Maryland Women’s Amateur Championship, three time Middle Atlantic Amateur Champion, two-time Eastern Women’s Golf Association Champion, Trans-Mississippi Women’s

Champion, Southern Women’s Champion and Greiner Cup Champion. In 1952 and 1954, ranked among the top ten women amateur golfers, she was an alternate on America’s Curtis Cup Team. In 1956, the same year Mary Ann made it to the quarterfinals of the British Amateur, she traveled to Sandwich, England, this time, as a playing member of the United States Curtis Cup Team.

Mary Ann was named Honorary Chairman of the 1988 Women’s U.S. Open hosted by Baltimore Country Club. During a television interview with Jim McKay, also a BCC member, Mary Ann said, “Playing on the Curtis Cup Team was my biggest thrill in golf. Representing your country and listening to the National Anthem, as the American Flag is raised is a memory I relive time and time again.”
