THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, MR. MARTIN P. BRUNK Baltimore Country Club would like to acknowledge Mr. Martin P. Brunk for his devotion to the Club as a dynamic member serving within the Club’s volunteer leadership, culminating in his election to Baltimore Country Club’s Board of Governors from 2016 to 2022. Marty was elected by his fellow Board Members as Treasurer of the Board from 2017 to 2018 and as the 37th President of the Club from 2018 to 2022, the Club’s highest leadership office. Marty's first volunteer assignment began in 2012 as a member of the Finance Committee to which he served for four years. He continued to enrich the Club by serving on the Pension Committee and CFO/Controller Search Committees in 2014. Marty was the initial Chair and Liaison of the Membership Committee which was created in 2016 and where he served as the Chair and Board Liaison until 2017. He has served on the General Manager/COO Compensation Committee from 2016
to 2022. Under his leadership, multiple committees were formed including the Archive Committee, BCC Traditions Committee, Fitness and Well-being Committee, Green Committee, Strategic Long Term Facilities Planning Committee, Nominating and Governance Committee, Real Estate Committee, and Tournament Committee. Marty solidified Baltimore Country Club’s success for current and future generations with his vision of the Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan and subsequent implementation of Phase 1 with the renovation and expansion of the Five Farms clubhouse. Through his leadership, BCC created the East Course Long Term Master Plan forever enhancing the Club’s crown jewel. He spearheaded the vision and transition of the Roland Park campus to Five Farms with the marketing and sale of 20-acres of Roland Park land. Marty was also named one of the Top Club Presidents of 2020 by Board Room Magazine. It is with heartfelt appreciation that Marty’s steadfast dedication to the welfare of Baltimore Country Club and its membership is hereby recognized and duly honored. ◆
BCC'S NEW CLUB PRESIDENT, MR. THOMAS E. CARROLL The Club would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Thomas E. Carroll, a BCC member since 2006, as Baltimore Country Club’s 38th President of the Club. Nominated by the Club’s Nominating and Governance Committee for election to the Board of Governors, Mr. Carroll is President and CEO of Diversified Insurance Industries, Inc. (DII), a regional insurance brokerage firm located in Hunt Valley, Maryland. He has been with DII for 36 of its 52 years, having begun his career as a “producer in training” and now oversees the entire business. Mr. Carroll’s deeper involvement at Baltimore Country Club began modestly enough with an invitation to serve on the Membership Committee, where he later became the Chair. He also served on the Indoor Sports Committee. Mr. Carroll served on the Board of Governors from 2016 to 2020 and as Vice President of the Board of Governors from 2018 to 2020. During
his two years as the Vice President of the Board of Governors, he worked closely with Mr. Brunk to help create the vision of the Club as delivered in the Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan. Now that he is following Marty's exceptional tenure, Mr. Carroll is initially focusing on a few key priorities for BCC. The first priority is the successful completion of our exciting Phase 1 project. Second, is to revisit the Club’s Strategic Plan, which was last updated in its entirety in 2015. And third, is to work with the Board of Governors to maintain the positive momentum they created and look ahead to Phase 2.
“Marty Brunk and the Board have worked tirelessly to map our future, and it is our responsibility to keep the ball rolling. I am very excited to work with the current Board of Governors and the BCC Leadership Team to build on the momentum they created.” Please join us in congratulating Mr. Carroll on his new leadership role. ◆

$340 package ($40 savings) • Four 60-minute Thai Yoga Massage sessions with Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner Marissa Loforte (must be used between June 6 & July 21) • A printout of stretches to do between sessions
I found the Thai massage super helpful for my general range of motion and for the range of motion in my golf swing. Marissa is very instructive as to motions and breathing during the massage which makes it a relaxing experience. Thai Yoga Massage also helps with circulation and recovery which is important for being able to get the most out of my training. I would strongly recommend adding it to your training regiment.
For more information or to register, contact Marissa Loforte at mloforte@bcc1898.com
As a fully certified Balanced Body certified instructor, I am a lover of movement! Pilates brings me and those who are invested in the practice an amazing connection and awareness of all body parts—big and small. After battling a couple of injuries, my love and appreciation for Pilates grew further and my journey of sharing its greatness with others began. In the studio, my focus is to create challenge, introspection of mind and movement, and maintain posture/alignment...all coupled with a little bit of burn!

I have been teaching Pilates in both group classes and individual lessons for the last four years. My teaching style is versatile in nature, as I come from an athletic background, and appreciate a balance of small stabilizing muscle related movements as well as the larger ones. I encourage my clients to get in tune with their bodies and how they are moving while teaching Pilates. This knowledge-based approach allows clients to leave sessions with a better understanding of how they are navigating life—to stand taller and move more efficiently.

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE It’s all about the weather indeed! In the May edition, I wrote about the unseasonably cold spring and the effects on turf green-up and recovery from aeration. On April 29, we had a low temperature of 31 degrees at Five Farms that broke a 148-year-old record low of 33 degrees. All the bermudagrass tees regrassed last summer and previous years have broken dormancy and fared relatively well through the winter months. We have witnessed a small amount of injury and delayed green-up on portions of the Driving Range field. The areas appear to be limited to low-lying areas which remained wet during several freeze/thaw cycles during the cold weather months. As the weather warms, it will be more apparent what we are facing as our Team will evaluate the extent of the damage and take the necessary corrective action. One of the challenges we face on the bentgrass fairways has been the emergence of perennial ryegrass clumps as pictured on the left. The fairways at BCC have always been predominately perennial ryegrass and were over-seeded in the fall with perennial rye seed. Unfortunately, the seed that didn’t germinate can remain viable in the soil for up to 20 years, which is what we see on both the East and West fairways. Materials to remove the ryegrass safely from bentgrass are not available or approved for use. So, what did we do? Last fall, we started experimenting on a couple of fairway areas with a material labeled for removing ryegrass from bermudagrass and fine fescue turf. The results were promising, and adverse effects on the bentgrass were minimal—which showed complete elimination of the ryegrass (pictured below). We are expanding the plots to an area at the beginning of #11 West fairway with the goal of developing a plan of action in the future. We think now is the best time to weaken and eliminate the ryegrass since the bentgrass is actively growing and can fill in the voids left by the dead ryegrass clumps. Keep an eye on this fairway, as it will be interesting to see how this work develops. Another continuous challenge has been the poa annua, or annual bluegrass, which continues to encroach on the fairways. I will address this and the programs that have been implemented in next month’s Lifestyle.
The Roland Park North Lawn—May 2022
Our Team sods high traffic areas along ends of cart paths and other areas every winter. On the bridge by the West Course on the left of #12, we are trying a product that is being sold as a solution to eliminate wear at the beginning and end of paths. We sodded the area with turf type tall fescue and installed the rubber mat (pictured below) over the sod. Within eight weeks, the grass will grow through the mat, and the crowns of the turf will be protected from injury. Only time will tell, and it will be interesting to see the results of this as a solution to a problem we face on an annual basis.
This year promises to be a busy year for our Events Team utilizing the outdoor areas at Roland Park. We sodded this outdoor space this winter, and Roland Park Horticulturist Laura Michel has done a wonderful job making it come to life this spring. Additionally, we would like to recognize Laura, as she is the longest-tenured staff member at BCC, as she recently celebrated 42 years at the Club. We look forward to seeing you around the Club. ◆

SQUASH TIPS FROM THE PROS By John Harriss, Racquets Associate & Assistant Squash Professional
Routines Between Points & Breaking Your Opponent’s Momentum One of the big things we want to try to do during a rally (if we can) is control the pace of play. This means hitting lobs and high drives to slow the pace down and hitting dropshots, high paced drives, and cross courts when we want to have a faster rally. But what can we do to control the pace of play between points? The answer can be found in our routine between rallies. The end of a rally, and before the next point begins, is the perfect time to catch your breath and get mentally prepared for the next rally. Because squash is an individual sport, it’s not uncommon for us to be very critical of ourselves and scrutinize our shot selection and decision making. Developing a routine between points allows us the opportunity to reset our mind so that we are mentally
prepared for the next point as opposed to spending the next rally thinking about our errors in the last rally because that could put us in a position where we lose multiple rallies in a row. Most people are familiar with bouncing the ball before they serve, and that’s exactly what I do. In fact, I do it seven times every time before I serve. But what about when you’re not serving? At the end of every rally I lose, I walk to the side of the court that I’m set to receive from, place my hand on the back wall, take a slow deep breath, and then exhale while wiping my hand down the glass. This allows me to reset myself mentally and break up any momentum that my opponent is developing. Try giving yourself a routine next time you play and see if it helps. All the top professionals do it, and so should you! ◆
