SUMMER FUN IDEAS
by Rebecca Printen, Therapeutic Yoga Instructor
It’s officially the heart of summer, and with sunny days comes a thirst for adventure. Nature's pull to get outside can feel strong. With all the excitement of summer activities, the list can include being outdoors, travel, barbecues, and social events with family and friends. Friends are wonderful and family can be lovely, but sometimes it can be more beneficial to take some time for yourself. Spend time alone to recharge. Take a hike alone, do some yoga, or meditate for 10 minutes to quiet the mind. Remind yourself that being alone can be a way to stay grounded and recharge for social activities. Spending just a few minutes with yourself will allow you to return to everything with a calmer, fresher perspective.

THE CADDIE CORNER
With summer upon us, we are excited to have a full roster of caddies available. Our team includes 35 youth caddies (grades 9-12), 24 college students and Evans Scholars, and 11 adult honor caddies.
Our Caddie Committee is diligently working to develop and promote this program. This year, to show our appreciation for those who support our Youth Caddie Program, any member who takes a youth caddie will receive a special bag tag, which our staff will place on your bag.
Additionally, members who support the Caddie Program by taking any level of caddie will be invited to an end-of-season cocktail party. At this event, we will recognize some of our allstar caddies and hold a raffle with various golf-related prizes. The grand prize is four suite tickets to the 2025 BMW Championship at Caves Valley. Each time you take a caddie, you will receive a raffle ticket to increase your chances in the drawings.
When I said our Caddie Committee has been hard at work planning for this year, I meant it. Take a look with pride at some pictures of our newly designed Evans Scholar Hall of Fame. It features our first-ever scholar Samantha Lannon, along with our
CADDIE FACTS
five current scholars. We hope you share the sentiment of the caddie committee and myself: by taking a caddie, you can change a life.
Greg Jones, PGA Pro Emeritus
▶ When you walk the East Course, it's a 4 ½ mile journey, which could be a bit longer if your shots are a little wayward. This distance translates to approximately 9,500 steps, potentially more for shorter individuals. Each step covers about 2 ½ feet, totaling 23,750 feet over 18 holes
▶ To qualify for the Evans Scholarship, a youth caddie must complete 80 rounds. That's 1,900,000 feet, 633,333 yards, or the equivalent of 6,333 football fields
So when we say, "Take a Caddie, Change a Life," think about what these youth caddies go through to earn this scholarship. More importantly, consider the impact you can have on their lives by spending four hours on the golf course with them.

THE WANAMAKER TROPHY
By John Vonei II
In 1916, department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker made it his mission to honor America’s professional golfers who, at the time, were considered little more than hired help. He initiated the formation of the PGA of America and underwrote the tournament that would recognize the country’s top professionals. To cap it o , Wanamaker invested $2,500 to create the enormous sterling silver trophy that bears his name.
In 1928, the PGA of America chose to hold the 11th playing of its championship at Baltimore Country Club on the Five Farms East Course. e championship (then a Match Play format) began on October 1 and ended on October 6 when Leo Diegel defeated Al Espinosa (6 down with 5 holes to play). To reach the nals, Diegel overcame Walter Hagen (favored by sports writers to win his sixth PGA) in the quarter nals (2 & 1) on the 35th hole. In the semi nals, Diegel crushed Gene Sarazen, two time PGA Champion, (9 & 8) on the 28th hole. It would be Diegel’s rst major victory.
In 1928, Diegel was not presented with professional golf’s grandest trophy. To the surprise of everyone, the Wanamaker was missing. Walter Hagen, who had won the tournament the previous four years, took it for granted that he would prevail in 1928. According to Hagen, he didn’t bother to bring Wanamaker’s regal cup to Five Farms.
When pressed as to where it was, Hagan confessed that he accidently le the Wanamaker Trophy in the
back of a taxi cab while carousing with his pals following his 1925 PGA victory in Chicago. He hadn’t seen it since. e tournament committee, scrambling to come up with something tting, borrowed the second Maryland Cup Trophy (the rst Maryland Cup being awarded to B. Warran Cockran following his third consecutive win in 1916). It was the (second) Maryland Cup Trophy (not the Wanamaker) that Baltimore Mayor, William F. Broening, was captured in a photograph, presenting to Leo Diegel.
A few years later, the original Wanamaker turned up in the basement of the Detroit based company that manufactured Hagen-brand Golf Clubs. No longer permitted to be in the possession of the reigning Champion, the Wanamaker is permanently displayed at the PGA Historical Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. It is brought out for each PGA Championship (just long enough) so the winner can hold it for a photograph.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
What a difference a year makes! Many thanks to Director of Outside Golf Services Luke Young, Caddie Manager Brett Keller, and the entire Golf Services Team who worked to hand-pick the Driving Range field while it was dormant this past winter. I can’t think of a better example of our core value, “Do What’s Right, Not What’s Easy,” to ensure the Range field was in the best possible condition this spring.
The photo from April 20 of the #6 West tee shows that the bermudagrass has broken dormancy and is doing quite well in spite of the rollercoaster temperatures we have experienced this spring. Portions of this tee are slower to green up and grow-in for one reason: foot traffic from play while dormant. As you play the West, you will note tees without traffic are faring much better compared to undersized tees that experienced more play throughout the winter. These areas will either be resodded or will grow in once temperatures heat up.
Below are photos of the Range comparing last year to this spring: hand-picking balls on the Range field to reduce the possibility of winter damage of dormant bermudagrass.
In addition to the bermudagrass green up, the fine fescue native areas have become quite attractive with the emergence of the seedheads. Like in past years, we will be mowing a first cut of the native at approximately 6 inches in height and up to 25 feet off the fairway. This will help with pace of play from those errant tee shots.

SAY HELLO TO OUR SUMMER STAFF
As we gear up for a busy summer season, you may have seen some new faces around our Five Farms Racquets Facility. We're thrilled to introduce three new additions to our Racquets Team: summer interns Jakub (Kuba) Solarski and Laura Ruiz, along with Pro Shop Attendant Ella Mitchell.
Kuba hails from Poland and is part of the Men's Tennis team at Norfolk University, where he is currently studying. Laura joins us from Colombia and represents Norfolk University on the Women's Tennis team. Throughout their tenure, they will be involved in various facets of our Racquets Program.
Ella Mitchell is a Towson High School graduate who will be attending Furman University in the fall to study International Relations. She was interested in working at BCC because of her passion for tennis, the opportunity to meet new people, and our beautiful Five Farms campus.
We are incredibly excited to have Kuba, Laura, and Ella join our team at Five Farms Racquets Facility. Their diverse backgrounds, enthusiasm, and dedication to tennis promise to bring fresh perspectives and energy to our program. We look forward to the positive impact they will have and are confident they will make this summer season truly exceptional.
