FALL BACK INTO FITNESS WITH MEREDITH LULL
PRIVATE REFORMER PILATES
The Benefits of Adding Reformer Pilates to Your Routine
Incorporating reformer Pilates into your fitness routine will help improve core strength, flexibility, balance, posture, and overall body conditioning, ultimately contributing to enhanced performance and reduced risk of injury in your respective sport(s). The resistance provided by Pilates reformer machines, typically through the use of springs, helps to tone and strengthen muscles by creating constant tension throughout the range of motion during exercises. This resistance challenges the muscles, leading to increased muscle engagement, improved muscular endurance, and ultimately, toning and strengthening of the targeted muscle groups. Additionally, the adjustable resistance allows for progressive overload, enabling individuals to continually challenge and strengthen their muscles as they progress in their training.
This spring-loaded apparatus enhances Pilates training using mat Pilates fundamentals. Its smooth-gliding carriage and adjustable resistance improve balance, alignment, and muscle tone. Reformer Pilates is ideal for integrating Pilates into workouts or rehabilitation routines.

THE CADDIE CORNER
Baltimore Country Club member Steve Colnitis, 70th Chairman of the Western Golf Association (WGA)/Evans Scholars Foundation, will take center stage this year as the BMW Championship is held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, from August 20 through August 25. Next year, the BMW returns to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.
The WGA was established in 1899 when 11 Chicago-area golf clubs united to promote their interests in golf. The WGA’s headquarters were set up in Golf, Illinois, and its inaugural Western Open and Western Amateur championships took place at the nearby Glen View Club, highlighting the exceptional talent of western golfers.
The WGA conducts championships for professional and amateur golfers, promotes the use of youth caddies, and supports the Evans Scholars Foundation in awarding full tuition and housing scholarships to high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. Currently, the WGA organizes four amateur championships—the Western Amateur, Western
FROM CADDIE TO COLLEGE
By Kendall Opheikens, BCC Caddie & 2022 Evans Scholar
I am a rising junior at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD), majoring in Public Health with a track towards pre-med. Go Terps!
I started caddying at Baltimore Country Club in June 2021, so I am going four summers strong this year. It has been an insane ride, and I still remember my first loop. I honestly thought I would quit when I was walking up hole 18. Thankfully, I stuck with it, which was the best decision I have ever made.
My fourth loop at BCC was with Mr. Jack Palmer, and he opened up a whole new world to me that I never thought possible. He told me about the Evans Scholarship, a full tuition and housing scholarship for caddies nationwide. It is a growing program on the East Coast and I am so proud to be a part of this expansion. This scholarship is truly a life-changing
Junior, Women’s Western Amateur, and Women’s Western Junior—as well as two professional events—the Korn Ferry Tour’s NV5 Invitational presented by Old National Bank and the BMW Championship, which is the penultimate event of the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs.
Please join me in wishing Mr. Colnitis all the best during this championship week. I’m sure we will see him on television throughout the coverage, sharing many stories of the Evans Scholars Foundation and the caddies it supports across the country, both past, present, and future.
Greg Jones, PGA Professional
Emeritus
opportunity. I have met many people through the scholarship who have helped me in various ways.
In my application essay, I wrote about my experience at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in 2021. I wrote about how the Evans Scholar alums, who mostly had never met each other before, looked like they had known each other for years. They only had one thing in common: being an Evans Scholar. I wrote about how I wanted to be a part of that community, and now that I am, I can say for certain that it was everything that I saw that day at the range.
I have had so many opportunities to meet new people and see new places. So far, I have been to Delaware for the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club, where I caddied for Harold Varner III and Davis Rylie (both follow me on Instagram, which is so cool).
I have also been to Chicago, Illinois, where I attended the Evans Scholarship Leadership Summit, which I will also
be attending this summer. I also went to South Carolina to caddie in the BMW Charity Pro-Am and caddied for Ryan French, creator of Monday Q Info.
In addition to these amazing places, I am currently in Long Island, New York, caddying at Sebonack Golf Club and staying at my college roommate’s house for the month of July. I hope to make even more connections here that can take me even further in my life.
When I am done with my four years at UMD, I aspire to go to medical school. I have always loved helping people and am fascinated by the human body. I hope to take this passion a step further by becoming a doctor.
I want to say thank you to Brett, Greg, all the amazing BCC staff, and everyone who has ever taken me out on the course. Finally, I would like to thank you for supporting the Caddie Program. I hope my story inspires you to take a caddie next time you play!
THE WALKER CUP
By John Vonei II
The o cial name of the event held every two years on alternating continents, is the Walker Cup Match—not Matches. e Walker Cup itself (25 inches high, without its base, and 20 inches wide —handle to handle) is o cially called the “International Challenge Trophy.” e Cup symbolizes amateur team competition between Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. e Match was envisioned to be a worldwide a air but it has never been other than a Great Britain/Ireland vs. the United States contest. e teams play four 18-hole foursomes in the morning and eight 18-hole (one-on-one) matches in the a ernoon on each of two consecutive days.
George Herbert Walker Bush, who was president of the USGA at the time, came up with the idea along with the USGA and Royal and Ancient Golf Club board members at a 1920 rules conference in Scotland. Although Walker gets the credit, William Fownes, Jr., winner of the 1910 United States Amateur, deserves equal billing. On July 25, 1919, Fownes captained the United States Team that defeated the Canadian Team (12-3) at the Hamilton (Ontario) Golf Club. is international match between the U.S. and Canada was the catalyst that crystallized the Walker Cup. Fownes was playing captain of the rst U.S. Walker Cup Team. He would
captain the team again in 1926—the year he became president of the USGA. e rst Walker Cup Match was played in 1922 at the National Golf Links of America, Long Island, New York. e United States won eight matches to four. President (and General of the Army) Dwight David Eisenhower was Honorary Chairman of the 1965 Walker Cup Match. Baltimore Country Club Golf Chairman, John A. “Jack” Emich, who in 2000, was awarded the United States Golf Association’s highest volunteer honor, the Joe Dey award, was General Chairman. e Match was played under the joint auspices of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland and the United States Golf Association, at Baltimore Country Club on the Five Farms East Course. e 21st playing of the Walker Cup Match o cially began, with foursome play on Friday, September 3, 1965, at 8:30am. For the rst time, the 1965 Match ended in a tie. And just as in the Ryder Cup, a tie goes to the defending champions, which meant that Team USA held the Trophy for another two years.
April through October 2024, we will be featuring a trophy from the Major Championships hosted at BCC. is trophy is on display in the Trophy Bar at Five Farms.
Great Britain & Ireand Team Captain Joe Carr (right) and U.S. Team Captain John Fischer (le ) pose for a photo with the Walker Cup a er the match ended in a tie for the rst time in history.
MILKWEED MEADOWS
BCC'S SANCTUARY FOR MONARCH BUTTERFLIES & POLLINATORS
By Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture
Each summer, a few curious golfers may wonder why our superintendents are allowing the native areas to become “weedy” with Milkweed. In fact, our high grass areas are carefully managed to allow naturally occurring stands of Milkweed to proliferate, as they are critical habitats for monarch butterflies. These low-maintenance areas still require annual mowing and weed control so they are not overrun with invasive species like wild raspberry, burn weed, and thistle. However, these management practices can be adapted to preserve the Milkweed stands while the monarch life cycle is in progress.
Scientists measure the area of forest in which monarch butterflies gather to hibernate each winter, providing a scientific indicator of their population status. New data detailing the abundance of the eastern monarch butterfly colonies wintering in central Mexico's forests estimate that the species occupied only 2.2 acres during the 2023-2024 winter season—59% less than the previous year when scientists observed 5.5 acres (according to the World Wildlife Fund, one of the sponsors of the study). Experts cited high temperatures and drought in the monarch's breeding areas in Canada and the United States, which reduced the abundance of milkweed, the only plant in which the butterflies lay their eggs. Though every plant helps, even in the home landscape, large stands of Milkweed are the most effective as waystations along the migratory path. I have shared information about our
Milkweed before, but this year, I wanted to tally up the square footage of our habitat. Here at BCC, after years of intentional stewardship, we now have about 2.5 acres of Milkweed meadows across both golf courses. Milkweed also supports other pollinators as an excellent nectar resource for a variety of bees and butterflies. Combined with the many pollinatorfriendly plants that bloom across the Club’s grounds, we can provide a dynamic year-long garden show for our members and guests while also providing monarchs with the food they need to reproduce in the spring and make their migratory journey in the fall.
GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
In late June, fans were installed near greens on holes #2, #3, #9, #10, #13, #14, #15, #16, and #17 on the East Course and holes #10, #11, #12, #14, and #15 on the West Course to combat high heat and humidity. Fans improve turf health in areas with limited air movement and are used once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 65°F, and daytime temperatures are above 85°F.
Proper repair of ball marks is essential to keep the putting greens looking and playing their best to ensure true and smooth putting surfaces. Now is a critical time for divot repair on bentgrass fairways and fairways tees, and everyone can play an essential role in taking care of the Club’s courses. This is the
best opportunity for recovery from divots since recovery from our seed mix will be non-existent until cooler nights and more favorable temperatures return in the fall months.
