TIPS from the PRO

Simplify Your Short Game Decisions

Are you struggling to decide what club and/or type of shot to hit around the greens? I’ve been there! There are many ways to navigate deciding what shot you should hit when around the putting green.

First, we have to make sure our setup is correct to have the highest rate of success. Relative to a normal full swing shot, I want you to double-check your stance to make sure it is much narrower and that you are closer to the golf ball. By being closer to the ball, the toe of the club should be resting on the surface of the ground a bit more than normal, while the heel of the club is slightly off the ground. The club will

now be much more vertical while standing over the golf ball in relation to a normal full swing shot.

Now here is when the thinking comes into play. The first thing I look at is, “What am I hitting this shot over? Is it fairway, is it rough, is it sand, is it a penalty area, etc.? Do I need to land it soft, or do I want it to release and run a bit more than normal?” Let’s say, for example, we are hitting over about 20 yards of fairway that has some undulation prior to getting onto the putting surface where the pin is only four paces on. The conversation that I begin to have with myself is, “Do I need or do I want loft?" In this example, I believe the answer is that I need enough loft to take the undulation of the fairway out of play (by hitting the ball over it) and enough loft so that the ball doesn’t roll out too much, given the pin is just four paces onto the green. I suggest grabbing your highest lofted wedge and playing around with where your ball position is in your stance. My personal belief with a standard pitch or chip shot is that the ball position should be a ball towards your back foot, or in other words, a ball right of the center of your stance (as a right-handed player).

There are two other ball positions we can be very consistent with to achieve different types of shots—the ball just on the inside of your lead foot and the ball just on the inside of your trail foot. With the ball towards your lead foot, you should see a higher launch with less ball speed. With the ball towards your trail foot, you should see a lower launch with more ball speed. In the example given, I would imagine ball position towards your lead foot would help us accomplish the goal of hitting the ball over the undulating fairway while also landing soft enough so the ball doesn’t roll out too far.

Give this a try the next time you go out to the short game area to practice. I strongly believe that as opposed to using different clubs to hit different shots around greens, you can often use one club with ball position modifications to hit nearly any shot you may face in a round of golf! ◆

2023-2024 PGA LEAD CLASS

We congratulate Director of Instruction Cathy Kim on being selected to join the 2023-2024 PGA LEAD Class! The 18-month leadership program aims to diversify and grow the game of golf while forming a guided path to leadership roles within the PGA. GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

We’re off to a great start this spring, and the weather is always at the forefront of how the golf course looks and plays. As of mid-April, temperatures are warming, the grass is starting to grow, and precipitation is on the dry side (3.6” below average). In fact, it’s been so dry that there have been a number of weather warnings related to high winds combined with low humidity, which have been the cause of wildfires throughout the region. If it seems like it’s been especially windy this time of year, you are not alone.

The average hourly wind speed in Baltimore experiences significant seasonal variation over the course of the year. The windier part of the year lasts for 6.6 months, from October 21 to May 9, with average wind speeds of more than 8.6 miles per hour. The windiest month of the year in Baltimore is March, with an average hourly wind speed of 10.6 miles per hour. The calmer time of year lasts for 5.4 months, from May 10 to October 20. The calmest month of the year in Baltimore is July, with an average hourly wind speed of 6.7 miles per hour.

If you have visited the courses, you will note the amount of sod that has been laid this spring. Many of these areas are subject to high cart and maintenance traffic, and these areas need to be sodded annually with tall fescue sod. You may

notice a black product on 4, 5, and 14 East made of rubber. This was installed over the sod, and the grass will grow through the mat and protect the crown of the plant. Perhaps this will help the survival of the turf throughout the season. We shall see as it's worth a try.

As a reminder, the East Course will close for aeration from May 1 through May 3.

We look forward to seeing you on the Club’s courses. ◆

We're Serving Up Success This Summer!

This summer, we’re bringing the heat with our second year of the Summer All-Stars Tennis & Pickleball and BCC Tennis Academy camps. Like all of our Junior Racquets Program, these camps utilize the progressive ball system. Why do we use this system? The system is used in USTA-approved programs across the United States to help children learn and enjoy the game of tennis. The progressive ball system helps children develop the skills necessary to play with a regular tennis ball by gradually introducing them to the standard ball size and court dimensions. For example, a red ball bounces lower and

moves slower so players can experience successful rallying at an early stage of development. This allows each player's needs to be met in the clinic and camp environment.

Campers will be grouped by age and playing ability allowing for instruction that best suits the individual player. Half-day and full-day options are available with lunch provided. Your junior can look forward to point play, games focused on teamwork, themed activities, an end-ofseason pool party, and more! ◆

PADDLE SEASON RECAP

Paddle season is now officially in the rear-view mirror. The BCC Paddle Program saw growth in the number of players, participation in lessons and clinics, and court utilization. As we look ahead to warmer weather, I wanted to share this season’s highlights. We debuted several new programs and events. This was the inaugural season for the Learn-to-Play Paddle program introducing 15 men and 30 women to paddle tennis. Our Racquets Professionals hosted BCC’s first Paddle Camp in November. 12 women participated in the first-ever Women’s Paddle Palooza team competition. Our members were split into four teams: Black, Navy, Purple, and Pink, each captained by a BCC Racquets Professional. Each team showed their team spirit by sporting their assigned team color and competing for the first-place prize.

Let’s not forget our favorite returning events like Smash & Bash or the Club Road Classic! BCC hosted its Paddle Club Championship finals in conjunction with the Squash Club Championships and the second annual Smash & Bash Racquets Banquet. This event celebrated all things racquets and recognized our members for their dedication and achievements throughout the season.

We had another active Interclub season with 101 total players across all men’s and women’s leagues. Many thanks to all of our captains who work more than they are willing to admit to run these teams. This season, we had five men’s teams (D1, D2, D3, and two D4 teams). The men’s D1 team made it to the finals, and the D3 team won the championship. Women’s Interclub had a D1 team and a D2 team, with the D1 team going on to win the championship. Seven BCC teams participated in the first men’s interclub league tournament called the Charm City Classic. We also congratulate members Steven Wieczynski and Bennett Bradley on being finalists in the Maryland State Men’s PTI 25+.

Last but certainly not least, Junior Coordinator & Senior Racquets Professional Jacob McGowan and Racquets Professional David Loveman became PPTR-certified Platform Tennis coaches.

See you on the paddle courts next season! ◆
