Great People Make Favorite & Safer Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

August Staff Member of the Month Melissa Hawkins, Pantry Supervisor Congratulations to Melissa for being named August Staff Member of the Month! She has worked diligently to raise the standards and expectations to a new level and makes sure they are met on a consistent basis. She has accomplished this by implementing various standard operating procedures that have improved consistency with recipes, plate presentations, shelf life and freshness of food, and overall organization. According to our Assistant Restaurant Chef Shaun, Melissa is a pleasure to work with and her positive attitude is contagious. She is always looking to learn something new and offers to help the team whether it's with prep, production, or cleaning. Melissa’s unrelenting commitment to excellence and her dedication to the Club shows why we are lucky to have her at BCC!

Summer Season Superstar Award Matthew Moore, Pool Café Server Congratulations to Matthew for receiving the Summer Season Superstar Award! Matthew has gone beyond expectations for not only the front of the house but for the back of the house as well. Matthew has become a person our Culinary and Food & Beverage teams can depend on to get the job done from large tasks such as cleaning equipment, running an event, or doing everyday operations and ensuring cleanliness at the Pool Café. Way to go Matthew on this well-deserved award!

Simple Truth Award Vincent Blake, Bag Drop Concierge Congratulations to Vince for receiving the Simple Truth Award! As our Junior Golf Leader Danny was wrapping up a Summer Golf School clinic, one of the juniors made a full practice swing and accidentally hit the toe of his iron against another junior’s head. The young man was in severe pain. When Danny called over the radio for help, Vince could hear the panic in Danny’s voice. As a former EMT and firefighter, Vince immediately jumped into action and rushed to the scene with a calm demeanor and towels to clean the wound. It took about 10 to 12 minutes total between the time of the accident to when the EMTs arrived on the scene. Vince was a hero that evening and didn’t think twice about jumping into action. We are very lucky to have him on our team!

À LA CARTE DINING

Delectable FALL COCKTAILS Have you tried any of BCC's new fall cocktails? These seasonal concoctions are the perfect companion to a brisk fall evening at your Club.

BCC HOT TODDY Next time you’re at the Club, ask one of our bartenders to make that tea a little stronger. One of Beverage Manager Patrick's favorite fall cocktails is the BCC Hot Toddy. At its simplest, a hot toddy is made with Scotch whiskey, lemon, honey, and hot water. Simple and perfect for a cold day, with the possibility of endless variations. Our hot toddy uses Hamilton Jamaican pot still rum, Earl Grey tea, lemon juice, raw honey, lemon verbena, saffron, cardamom, star anise, clove, and cinnamon. This star cast of ingredients all come together when hot water is added.

SCARLET DOVE MARGARITA This tangy marriage of the Paloma and the margarita mixes Arette Artesanal Blanco Tequila, fresh grapefruit juice, lime juice, raw honey, and Aperol. It’s pretty in pink and served on a large ice cube with a half-salted rim. Yum!

BCC COSMO Our BCC Cosmo is a new twist on the traditional cosmopolitan. We make a cardamom-spiced syrup and mix it with lime juice, black currant, Wheatley vodka, and Combier Orange Liqueur. If you’ve never heard of black currant, that’s for a good reason. This superfruit with a unique and intensely tangy flavor has not been imported or grown in the US for nearly 100 years. When you sip on a BCC Cosmo, know you’re getting a blast of Vitamin C, potassium, iron, calcium, manganese, and magnesium.

BUBBLES & BERRIES Our Beverage Team sourced imported Italian Fragola strawberries preserved in syrup. A few of these perfect little strawberries and a spoon of their syrup is served in a glass with sparkling Cava wine. It has the perfect blush and just the right balance of sweet and tart. At the bottom of the glass is truly a treat when you get to taste those delicious strawberries.

Keep your eye out for more spectacular drinks this fall as we will be releasing our BCC Sazerac, Espresso Martini, and a new and improved Irish coffee to finish off your meal.

Did You Know? In 1911, the US Congress banned the import of black currants from Europe based on incomplete science. They feared the black currant bush was an intermediary carrier of Blister Rust, a disease that threatened to collapse the American timber industry. In 2003, Greg Quinn purchased a farm in New York with the intent of growing black currants. He ran studies and proved currant bushes were safe to import and grow. Next, he convinced the NY State Senate and Assembly to overturn the import ban. Seventeen years later, Greg Quinn and his CurrantC company are the #1 provider of American-grown black currants.

FITNESS & WELLNESS

A Message of Gratitude

From Rebecca Printen, Alignment Yoga & Therapeutic Yoga Instructor There is nothing like a great yoga class to help you remember and appreciate the many blessings in your life. I often find myself on the commute home from a particularly amazing class thinking, "I really love breathing!" I am incredibly grateful for those moments that I really appreciate those simple things I usually take for granted. During this time of year, gratitude is on everyone's mind. We think about how lucky we are to have our families, friends, homes, food to eat, and all the other things that make our lives richer. Expressing that gratitude is healing—and a yoga mat is the perfect place to reflect on and express those feelings. Stay on track through the holidays with these healthy tips: • Eat before going to a holiday party • Remember, holiday dinners are not an all-you-can-eat buffet • Get some exercise! Recruit your friends to participate in healthy activities

• Set a drink limit for alcohol • Remember to hydrate; drink plenty of water • Log your calories

GOLF

Why is

CLUB FITTING

So Popular?

By KayJay McClay, Assistant Golf Professional

As Golf Professionals, our goal is to help you play better golf. A major factor in one’s confidence relates to how you feel about what is in your golf bag. The answer can lie in your next club fitting experience. When it comes to fitting, the goal is simple—develop consistent ball striking and give room for forgiveness when you have off center golf shots. However, through testimony and personal experience, I find the idea of club fitting sometimes gets a bad reputation. Most golfers think the club fitting experience is only reserved for the advanced golfer. Your average player tends to think being fit for new clubs comes as a gift once they’ve “found a good swing.” This is not necessarily the case. Do you have to find the center of the face enough times to get relevant feedback? Absolutely! You can however, find major value in the experience and realize technology can be your friend.

baseline for measurement. We look for things like typical distance and shot dispersion to determine what you need to have in your bag to help you play better golf. Next, we assemble a few clubs that will best match your swing tendencies or specifications. Now, we can compare your performance with your current equipment to the equipment we believe will help you become more consistent. Through measurable feedback and statistical data, we can help guide you into the club best suited for you and put you on the path to playing better golf.

In club fitting, the ability to measure results has a true place in the industry today if you value measurable feedback. There are a couple things we look for in a basic club fitting session. First, we start with your own iron/driver as a

Contact any of your Golf Professionals to schedule your next fitting session and be on your way to playing better golf!

If you find yourself trying to find the answer to the age old question of “when is the right time to get fitted,” I would say, there is no better time than the present. If your clubs look good, and they feel good-that can translate into better results. ◆

WINTER GOLF SCORES & HOLE IN ONES During the winter golf season, November 16 through March 15, rounds of golf in the state Maryland and any state that declares their winter months as inactive, are not valid for handicap purposes. Rounds of golf in the south, southwest, and west, where their associations have deemed those months as an active season, must be posted. As a reminder, due to weather that could effect tee locations and the shortening of holes possibly during the winter months, Hole in Ones made here at BCC are only valid from March 15 though November 15 as it relates to receiving your complimentary shadow box, Golf House credit book, and cocktail.

WINTER SEASON REMINDERS Cold Weather Precautions

With the arrival of colder temperatures, the turfgrass is no longer growing and recovering from divot injury. In order for the Driving Range tees to be in the best possible condition for the start of the 2021 season, please make note of the following adjustments: Beginning Monday, November 2, 2020 and throughout the winter months (November-March) • All practice from the tees closest to the Golf House and back range will be from the all-weather surfaces only. The three natural turf tees will be reseeded and covered for the season. The cover will act like a greenhouse effect, aiding seed germination and turf growth • The uneven lie fairway portion of the back range will be closed • The practice putting and chipping greens will remain open, weather permitting

Credit Book Expiration: December 31, 2020 As a reminder, all unused credit books and gift certificate balances must be redeemed by December 31, 2020. If you are unsure if you have any unused credit, please contact the Golf House at 410.561.3381.

GROUNDS from this year and last year on trees and shrubs throughout the courses continues to be seen, especially cherries, oaks, Leylands, and lilacs. I am often asked how weather extremes impact the flower gardens throughout both campuses, and my answer is always the same: diversity is key. By planting a variety of species in layers and mixed plantings, we ensure that while weather extremes may have a negative impact on some species, neighboring plants will often continue to grow and thrive. Of course, selecting the right plant for the right place is key, but it seems like each year brings its own unique set of challenges and even plants in the right location can struggle one year and thrive the next. Additionally, biodiversity in plant species attracts biodiversity of insect species, including lots of beneficials to help control pests naturally.

HORTICULTURE UPDATE by Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture

As the growing season comes to a close, it is interesting to look back at the weather and how it impacted the gardens. Back in the spring, we had some late frosts that impacted apple blossoms, practically eliminating our Cortland crop. In July, we had over 21 days of 90°F plus temperatures, with light rain and high temps continuing into August. These humid, hot conditions were very favorable to diseases that impacted our gardens and production crops, especially tomatoes and apples. Though yields were down across many crops, we were still able to harvest over 300lbs of tomatoes, 220lbs of carrots, 110lbs of beets, 60lbs of peppers, and about 15lbs each of cucamelons, ground cherries, and tomatillos. From the orchard, we were still able to harvest about 600lbs of apples for culinary use and 900lbs for donation to local food banks. The long-term impact of weather patterns

In other news, we welcomed Will Wright to the Horticulture Team in September. As Horticulturist at Five Farms, Will oversees the production gardens, helps with garden maintenance throughout the grounds, and assists with management of Horticulture staff members. He has a degree in Plant Science from the University of Maryland and brings three years of applied Integrated Pest Management as well as viticulture experience. He is looking forward to taking over stewardship of the culinary gardens and getting to know our membership through workshops and casual encounters around our Five Farms campus. Remember, we are always happy to answer any gardening questions you may have. Stop by and chat with us around the Club or send me an email at cwagner@bcc1898.com! ◆

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE by Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper

10

At the end of October, we began aerating the playing surfaces on the West Course, along with the East Course in early November in preparation for next season. The most important reason for aeration is the removal and reduction of thatch and organic matter. Thatch accumulation naturally occurs on creeping bentgrass surfaces and can accumulate rather rapidly. Thatch is defined as a tightly intermingled layer of dead and living stems, leaves, and roots that accumulate between the green vegetation and soil surface. Reducing thatch, increasing soil oxygen levels, and improving water penetration are important factors needed to help promote a stronger, healthier plant and reduce the risk of disease and poor playing surfaces.

organic matter (roughly one inch or less below the surface) is the root zone mix engineered specifically for your Club and disturbing this area is simply unnecessary. We will use the Graden dethatcher and set the depth just below the organic matter layer (around one inch deep) which cuts continuous channels removing maximum amounts of material and creates space for sand to be applied in the channels. This process is called linear aeration and is ideally suited not only to remove organic matter, but promote surface firmness. By using 2mm slicing blades, we reduce the amount of time it takes for the greens to heal versus standard core aeration used on West Course. By implementing this practice, the greens will be healed and in top condition by next spring.

In order to manage this natural process, we use several methods to curtail accumulation, including core aeration on the West and Graden dethatching on the East Course greens. One major advantage to the USGA specification putting greens on the East (constructed in 2014) is that deep and aggressive cultivation is usually not necessary. Below the

Below are the dates the courses will be closed to complete these practices: • The East Course will be closed November 2, 3, and 4 for aeration and dethatching • The East & West Course fairways will be core aerated the week of November 30

Laura M. Michel

SNAPSHOT

A LI F E TIM E of D E D I CA T I O N By John Voneiff II, BCC Member

In 1980, Laura Michel graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. It was during an economic downturn. People weren’t hiring. This was particularly true for recent college graduates. Laura told me when we met in the Roland Park library on Monday, September 21, 2020 that when she couldn’t find a position in landscaping or gardening, she applied everywhere. It didn’t matter, she just needed a job—any job. One morning, while perusing the Baltimore Sun classifieds, a specific opening caught her eye. Baltimore Country Club was seeking an individual to tend to its gardens and grounds. Laura applied. Merrell Frank, the Club’s Golf Course Superintendent, had made it his task to beautify the neglected commons surrounding both clubhouses. The gardens and grounds in Roland Park, since the closing of the golf course in 1964, were especially wanting. Frank offered Laura the position. She didn’t give the meager four dollar per hour wage a second thought. She was thrilled to find, as she describes it these forty years since, 'the perfect match.'

Recognizing he was interviewing the right person, Frank offered Laura the position. She didn’t give the meager four dollar per hour wage a second thought. She was thrilled to find, as she describes it these forty years since, “the perfect match.” One year later, in 1981, Merrell assigned Laura exclusively to the care of Roland Park. Neither Laura or Merrell could have foreseen that

for Laura this was the beginning of a lifetime labor of love. Baltimore Country Club,” Laura told me, “has been a wonderful place to spend the years. I look forward to every day. It has gone by so fast.” Baltimore Country Club has been a wonderful place to spend the years. I look forward to every day. It has gone by so fast.

There is no question about the proverbial adage—“Time flies.” Those of us who have accumulated age, can’t help but look back and reflect upon our own irresistible legacy of time. It seems like children who were swimming in the Five Farms pool only yesterday, now have families of their own. It has been 121 years since Willy Smith won the 1899 U.S. Open at Roland Park by eleven strokes—56 years since the last round of golf was played on the first eighteen hole golf course in Maryland—40 years (nearly 15,000 days) since Laura undertook the preservation of our thirty-two acre Roland Park campus. She is there today—sporting her wide brimmed floppy hat, meticulously trimming shrubbery, cutting grass, sweeping the paths, wielding her chainsaw, or potting perennials.

outdoors. The Michel children fell in love with the woodlands and its wildlife. Their father, James, dutifully tended his four acre formal garden, on the same farmland, until his passing in 2019. Her husband, Barton, before retirement, was a greenskeeper at Eagle’s Nest Country Club. But Laura’s earliest remembrance, the genesis of her love of horticulture, came from spending hours with her grandfather who founded, and until his death, was the proprietor of a commercial greenhouse in Parkville. What member of Baltimore Country Club can visit Roland Park (spring, winter, summer, fall) without harboring a prideful appreciation for the splendor of its superlative garden greens, floral blooms and pristine grounds? For much of this, we are beholden to Laura and her four decades of faithful and immeasurable service to us all. ◆

Laura Michel was born and raised in Kingsville, Maryland near Belair. She went to Kingsville Elementary and graduated from Perryville High School in 1976 before receiving a full scholarship to the University of Maryland College Park. The Michels lived on a thirty acre farm. Along with her two sisters and two brothers, Laura was always 11
