LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO
Dear Members,
First and foremost, it has been a pleasure welcoming you back to the newly renovated Five Farms Clubhouse. I have truly enjoyed seeing you, your families, and guests enjoying the new spaces and dining amenities. The Club has never been busier, and I am thrilled to be part of this moment in the Club’s history. The year plus long journey of construction presented some interesting and challenging obstacles as well as a few surprises too. I can’t thank you enough for your patience and understanding throughout the construction project.
As we acclimate to the new rooms, equipment, traffic patterns, and how our team functions in these spaces, we are working to establish best practices for programming and procedures to accommodate the membership while remaining focused on our standard of excellence. The Executive Team and I have and will continue to evaluate how members use the new spaces and will collect your feedback. We will make appropriate adjustments when and if needed. One of the most heavily utilized spaces at the Club has been the Adirondack Bar—especially during Sunday football. On Sundays, this space, including the soft seating, has been made family-friendly so that members and their children can enjoy the games together. In addition, the TV sound has been turned on for Ravens games to enhance the experience.
I would also like to address dining reservations. As you have undoubtedly witnessed, Five Farms is experiencing significant increases in demand because of the new facility. We find that many members want reservations near or at the same time. One question we are commonly asked is, “why are certain times closed for reservations, but when I arrive, I see open tables?” Like tee times and Pace of Play in golf, dining requires what we call “turntimes” for orders to be paced. A turn-time is the amount of time between dining reservations and pace is how many orders we send to the kitchen in a specific timeframe. We focus on balancing our standard for member experience and accommodating as many members as possible. Below are a few explanations why we have designed our reservation program the way we have.
• Reservations allow us to staff appropriately and better plan for your experience
• We need to know the time you are sitting for your meal, not the time you are arriving to the Club, so we can accommodate the greatest number of members
• To control turn-times to allow the kitchen to properly prepare all dishes without getting overwhelmed with too many orders placed at the same time
• Most restaurants use the same table two to three times a night. Club restaurants use approximately half of the tables two times per night. Tables that are used before 6:00pm can also be used after 7:45pm. Tables sat between 6:30pm and 7:30pm are only used once per night
Reservations remain highly recommended for all areas except the Trophy Bar, which is walk-ins only. Walk-ins are permitted subject to availability but may experience wait times for a table. A diagram of the new dining areas with names and reservation recommendations is located on the BCC website to help members familiarize themselves with the new Clubhouse. Please remember your reservation time is the time you plan to be seated, not the time you should arrive at BCC.
As we enter the winter season, we plan to operate both Roland Park and Five Farms facilities concurrently in some capacity for four months, beginning in November and ending in February 2023, except for December, which will be Roland Park only. Due to continued labor challenges, Five Farms will be available for private parties of 75 people or more. Please refer to the website or mobile app for specific hours of operation at each facility. Future adjustments as to hours may occur based on member usage and our ability to staff both facilities.
This is going to be a great holiday season for Baltimore Country Club, and I am genuinely appreciative to be a part of it. I hope that BCC is and continues to be your favorite place. I look forward to seeing you at the Club, and as always, please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
M. Kent Johnson, CCM General Manager/COO

Great People Make Favorite Places
BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
Staff Member of the Month
Sofia Ilustrisimo Lead Food Runner
Sofia has been a wonderful asset to the Food & Beverage Team since she began her J-1 Internship with BCC. Sofia started as a Server Assistant and has worked in both the À la Carte operation and in Banquets. She has found a strong voice in the kitchen as Lead Food Runner. Sofia has graciously earned the respect of her peers, managers, and the entire culinary operation. She has done this with her incredible kindness, willingness to teach and lead others, her quick wit and intelligence, and ability to remain extremely calm under pressure. She always goes the extra mile staying late to ensure her station is clean and ready for the next person, and asks to come in early to assist when she knows we are short staffed. She cares deeply about her coworkers and the membership! Sofia embodies the Simple Truth by being a truly great person, making BCC a favorite place for staff and members alike!
Exceptional Leadership Award
Brittany Lewis Food & Beverage Manager
Brittany has shown tremendous growth, strength, positivity, and perseverance during her time at BCC. She started with us right before the COVID-19 Pandemic, so like many of us, she has never known a “normal” year here at BCC. Through the Pandemic she rolled with the punches and helped find ways to stay connected to and help the membership. Over the past year, she has been instrumental in keeping the Food & Beverage Team moving forward and staying organized. Throughout the past few months she has worked tirelessly and has been extremely positive in working towards getting the new clubhouse open. We could not have done it without her!
Brittany has been through many team changes in the Food & Beverage Team but remains our rock and has been extremely successful in teaching BCC standards and values to new staff members. She is always quick to respond and help wherever needed. Brittany is a huge source of support for her entire team, we are lucky to have her.

GOLF CONDITIONING
with Mike Horn, Personal Coach
What is golf conditioning? Golf conditioning or golf fitness refers to performing exercises designed specifically to improve muscle groups and parts of the body most required when golfing. Now that the golf season has ended, golf conditioning is even more beneficial during the off-season to help prepare your body for the stresses it will endure during the next season.
With a sport like golf which favors one side of the body, a good golf conditioning program includes exercises that increase core stability and muscular strength and improve flexibility, balance, and coordination while targeting specific muscular imbalances, physical limitations, lack of range of motion, and cardiovascular endurance.
A Golf Professional can help correct a golfer’s technique by altering stance, grip, and hip turn ratio. Often, the underlying fault in your golf swing is your body itself. How you hit the ball is primarily determined by physical limitations such as lack of mobility in your hips and shoulders, hip and shoulder girdle instability, and
insufficient arm and core strength. To optimize your swing, you must discover and address your underlying physical limitations. You then need to train your body in specific ways to overcome these limitations to increase your overall performance and decrease your chance of injury.
A golf-specific fitness routine can be started at any time of the year. It is most beneficial when it is performed all year round and redesigned every 60 to 90 days to keep you motivated and continually challenged. ◆ Contact Mike Horn at mhorn@bcc1898.com to prepare you for the upcoming golf season.

Greenkeeper’s Update
On October 31, our Team resumed work on the East Course Long-Term Maintenance Plan. The plan was developed in 2018, and implementation began in 2019. This fall, we are focusing on drainage on the entire hole of #1 and the lowest portion of the #2 fairway. Weather permitting, we expect this work to be complete by the beginning of the 2023 golf season.
reason for aeration is the removal and reduction of thatch and organic matter. Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of dead and living stems, leaves, and roots that accumulate between the green vegetation and soil surface. Thatch accumulation naturally occurs on creeping bentgrass surfaces and can accumulate rather rapidly. Reducing thatch, increasing soil oxygen levels, and improving water penetration are important factors needed to help promote a stronger, healthier plant and reduce the risk of disease and poor playing surfaces.
On November 28, we will begin core aerating the West fairways. While this practice takes place, the East Course will be open for an extended period until the West fairways are complete. This is a change from when the East Course used to close on the Monday following Thanksgiving.
As a reminder, fall is the best time to repair your lawn following the summer months with cool-season species such as turf-type tall fescue. This is due to the following:
• Shorter daylight hours
• Cool nights and warm days that are ideal for germination and establishment from seed (60-75 degrees)
• Lack of weed and disease pressure
• Abundance of natural moisture
Our long-term drainage plan is a result of record-breaking rainfall in 2018, with over 75" of precipitation (33" above the 147-year annual average), followed by 55" in 2019 (14" above the annual average). Turf Drainage Co. of America formulated this plan after visiting the property in October 2018 and was hired based on their proposal and track record of solving complex drainage issues on golf courses throughout the United States. This plan, implemented by local golf course contractor McDonald & Sons, is a combination of excess water collection and transportation. This collection system consists of well-placed open basins that collect excessive surface water before entering the fairway areas, further saturating the soil profile. These basins collect surface water, and due to their patented design, they also collect seepage water in the ground through the sidewalls. However, no surface collection system alone can adequately drain the course without a method to remove water that has saturated the soil and address water seeping from the ground (via springs) on holes completed such as #3, #7, #10, and #11. A key feature of the master drainage plan is creating large seepage drain fields using a Turf Drain pipe. This product is the fastest, most efficient product available for seepage drainage in the soil. The Turf Drain product is placed in a two to three feet deep backfilled trench with straight sand engineered for our drainage needs.
To date, 2.25 miles of pipe out of the over 15 miles in the plan have been installed. We continue to progress and are confident that with this plan, we can maximize the collection and transportation of drainage water to create an infrastructure to handle excessive moisture. The result is a consistently welldrained soil profile, healthy playing surfaces that can withstand the summer stress periods, and firmer playing surfaces.
At the end of October, we began aerating the playing surfaces on the West Course and then the East Course at the beginning of this month in preparation for next season. The most important
Also, we can experience frost when the nighttime and morning temperatures (the coldest part of the day) drop to a point where water freezes inside the plant and forms sharp ice crystals.
Pressure from foot, vehicular, and animal traffic on rigid, frozen turf ruptures the cells within the plant, causing injury or even death of the plant. Delays in morning start times may be necessary due to this weather event.
Finally, please be mindful that temperatures do not allow for the recovery of playing surfaces during the late fall months. Continue to repair your ball marks, replace your divots, and use the seed provided on the carts and divot stations on the courses when possible. ◆

Paddle is a Sport for Everyone
Paddle season is officially in full swing. Once again, the courts are packed with member play, lessons, clinics, and interclub matches. This is an excellent time of year to play paddle whether you are a skilled player or a beginner. Paddle tennis has many physical and mental benefits, but one of the game's best aspects is social. Paddle is an inclusive sport that brings together juniors and adults of different ages, genders, and skill levels. Power is not a level separator like in tennis. The smaller court
and ability to play the ball off of the screens make paddle a game of consistency and placement rather than powerful shotmaking. Therefore, you will often find men, women, and juniors playing on the same court. Get involved with paddle tennis at BCC this season with any of the program offerings below. ◆
