BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
Juan Cruz Romero, Valet Attendant
Juan has been an invaluable asset, consistently supporting all departments with a positive attitude and unmatched versatility. Whether filling in for shifts, assisting staff, or helping members and guests, Juan ensures everything runs smoothly. His quick learning and dedication have made a lasting impact. We are grateful for his efforts and the way he unites the team.
Danny Coker, Lead Bartender
Danny is the embodiment of our third core value: build genuine relationships. He makes BCC feel like a second home for members and staff alike. He has had a crucial impact on our bar program since joining the team and continues to lead by example, share his bar expertise, and help his teammates grow and learn. Recently, Danny was promoted to Lead Bartender and focuses on bringing in craft beers that are both unique and classic. Additionally, Danny always ensures that the bar is running as smoothly as possible, whether it be supporting the team during busy nights or ensuring everything is in its place. Danny truly goes beyond expectations for the team.
Hannah Schmitt, Membership Assistant
Our Director of Membership, Casey, recently spoke with a member who was transitioning to a different membership status while undergoing cancer treatment. After their conversation, Casey relayed the details to Hannah in preparation for an upcoming meeting. Without hesitation, Hannah thought about the member’s comfort during this time and suggested putting together a tote filled with BCC items from the Golf Shop. Within minutes, she selected a cozy sweatshirt from the shop for the member. What impressed Casey was how quickly Hannah acted. She expressed that she felt inspired to help as if it was something she was meant to do. Her words struck a chord: “When something nice crosses your mind, there’s a reason to act on it because we often hesitate.” We are grateful for Hannah’s compassion and empowerment to brighten a member’s day!
Dear Fellow Members,
As we embrace the spirit of the holiday season, the Board of Governors invites our members to participate in our annual Staff Holiday Fund. This year, we’re introducing a new approach to encourage broader participation, which is explained in more detail below.
Holiday donations serve as a tangible acknowledgment of the dedication and effort the staff puts in throughout the year, fostering a culture of appreciation. When all members come together to support the staff, it creates a sense of community and camaraderie, which strengthens the bond between members and the team. This ultimately increases morale, which directly correlates to our member experience and exemplifies our Simple Truth—Great People Make Favorite Places.
We encourage you to submit a contribution before Friday, November 22, on the BCC website or mobile app or by returning the enclosed card to the Club. If we do not receive your contribution by November 22, an automatic contribution of $250 will be added to your November member statement. To opt-out or adjust the amount of the automatic charge, please contact the Accounting Department at billing@bcc1898.com by Sunday, December 8.
Our dedicated team is committed to providing you and your guests with memorable experiences, and last year, 807 families—61.6% of our member households—joined us in recognizing their hard work. We believe many more members would contribute, but for one reason or another, don’t get around to making their contribution. For those who have in the past, their contributions have been generous and appreciated. To give you a sense of last year’s contributions: 20% of participating
households donated up to $200, 38% contributed between $200 and $300, 25% between $300 and $500, and 17% contributed over $500. The average donation was $297, with the highest contribution reaching an impressive $10,000.
Your contributions are thoughtfully allocated based on each staff member’s role and tenure, ensuring that every team member shares in the fund—except for the General Manager/COO. For many of our staff, your generosity adds a special touch to their holiday celebrations and, in many cases, represents a material part of their holiday celebration.
Thank you for your continued support of the Staff Holiday Fund and your understanding of this new approach. I look forward to seeing you at our Roland Park and Five Farms clubhouses. Wishing you and your loved ones a warm and joyous holiday season!
Warm Regards,
Thomas E. Carroll President, Baltimore Country Club Board of Governors

When Roland Park Dining opens on Tuesday, November 5, members will now have two distinct dining experiences to enjoy through the fall and winter. The Roland Park 1898 Grille, open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner service (5:00pm-9:00pm), offers a nostalgic journey back to the 1930s, featuring mahogany paneling, stone flooring, and a menu exclusive to Roland Park. Additionally, members can continue to dine at Five Farms from Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00am to 9:00pm, for a modern yet refined experience that is available year-round. At both locations, you can look forward to dining specials and the same brand of BCC hospitality you expect.
As a reminder, À la Carte reservations open 10 days in advance, so book early to secure your spot! When making your reservations, please be cautious when selecting your dining location. Roland Park dining locations are indicated by the letters “RP” (e.g., RP – Grille, RP – Oyster Porch), while all Five Farms locations are labeled “FF” (e.g., FF – 1924 Grille). FIVE FARMS

DECEASED; 2019
Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6), Specialist X
Service: 1943-1946
Unit/Division: Naval Research Lab, Washington, D.C.
“In October 1943, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after the basic training, was assigned to the Metallurgy Division of Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. in December of 1943. My assignment to NRL was very fortunate as I was able to contribute supplemental knowledge to the welding industry, which was then, still in the early stages of development.
A number of Liberty ships lost their bow sections and broke in half; so, the Navy formed an emergency team at the Welding Section of the Metallurgy Division of NRL to discover why this was occurring. I was assigned to that team and, with cooperation from other technical people in the Bureau of Ships, we were able to suggest welding changes that helped to arrest the crack problems of the Liberty ships.
While working on the Liberty ship problem, we learned that the quality of the weld metal was inadequate and perhaps defective. We suspected that was due to the mineral coating on the welding rods so it was decided in July 1944 to develop a better welding rod. With two assistants, I was placed in charge of this project.
We purchased a machine that would extrude coatings on welding rods and subsequently made thousands of these rods working with the help of the American Welding Society and welding rods manufacturers. As a result of this cooperative effort, we developed the Low Hydrogen Welding Rod, which is still widely used today.”

Deployments: Korean War (1952-1953)
Honors: Silver Star Medal, Two-Time Purple Heart Medal Recipient
SUMMARY OF ACTION: "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with a Marine Rifle Company in WESTERN KOREA on 26 July 1953. During the night of 26 July 1953, Second Lieutenant COWIE, serving as a rifle platoon commander, was ordered to reinforce friendly elements on the Main Line of Resistance. He displayed exceptional skill and outstanding courage in moving his platoon up to the main Line of Resistance and deploying it in the reinforcing position in the midst of intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. His utter contempt for the enemy fire inspired his men to emulate his exceptional courage in expeditiously occupying their new positions. On three separate occasions, Second Lieutenant COWIE personally led a squad into enemy-held trenches in order to evacuate friendly wounded. On each occasion, it was necessary to clear the enemy from these positions before evacuation of the wounded could be effected. During these incursions into enemy-held positions, Second Lieutenant COWIE killed no less than six of the enemy in the extremely close-in fighting. During the last attack, he suffered wounds in the arm and hand but refused to be evacuated, being content with on the spot first aid treatment. Later in the night, Second Lieutenant COWIE skillfully called down mortar fire, which, coupled with the highly effective fire from his own platoon, caused the enemy severe casualties. Second Lieutenant COWIE’s exceptional courage prevented many wounded marines from falling into enemy hands and contributed materially to the success of our forces in holding Hill 119. His conduct throughout was fully in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

As the golf season winds down, our focus shifts from playing to training for power and speed. Preparing for the upcoming golf season starts months in advance to help avoid injury and improve your game. Our five-week fitness program for golfers is designed to boost your strength, power, and club speed while building muscle to efficiently store and release energy at impact. This will help you hit farther and lower your score. Strength and power are the keys to speed. Get fit to play your best golf!
Your coaches for this program are Jessica Taylorson, Mike Horn, and Janine Rich. All golf and fitness levels are welcome.
Investment to play your best golf: $285

Vinyasa Yoga is a practice that connects breath with movement. In our Vinyasa classes, you’ll flow through a thoughtfully structured sequence of postures, transitioning smoothly from one to the next. While it’s often believed that Vinyasa is fast-paced and challenging, the practice is actually adaptable for people of all ages and skill levels. At BCC, our instructors are skilled at guiding everyone, regardless of experience, so you can feel confident that you’ll be supported and encouraged. You’ll leave class feeling both energized and relaxed.
WEEK 1
TPI/NASM Golf Fitness Screen and corrective exercises
WEEK 2
Mobility/Flexibility/Balance: Improving awareness of balance and the ability to maintain it throughout the golf swing is fundamental to keep a solid connection to the ground
WEEK 3
Core Strength & Stability: When you think core and stability, think control. By improving golf-specific functional strength, the body has more control during the golf swing
WEEK 4
Strength, Power, & Speed: Learning to load and store maximum strength and then sequentially release it through impact with maximum efficiency means maximum power. Velocity is the rate of speed in a specific direction. Distance is directly proportional to the velocity of the club head through impact
WEEK 5
TPI/NASM re-evaluation and corrective exercises as needed
To maximize your potential in this five-week program, we encourage you to also participate in our Alignment Yoga for Golfers class on Mondays at 6:00pm, Reformer Pilates for Golfers class Tuesdays at 6:15pm, and book a Thai Yoga Bodywork session with Lainey Baer.

Mike Horn Personal Coach
BCC Tenure: 3 years
A fun fact is that I love to go on long therapeutic walks with my dog and enjoy the season change of summer into fall.
Here’s a workout tip for golfers who experience lower back stiffness or pain after their rounds: Focus on strengthening and stretching the pelvic bowl region during your warm-ups or workouts. If you’re unsure which exercises are most effective, reach out to Mike, who specializes in glute and core training for Golf Fitness. By improving mobility and strength in your lower back and hips, you’ll enhance your ability to fully engage in your golf swing.
My workouts with Mike Horn have been instrumental in meeting my fitness goals. He has a variety of exercises that focus on strength, endurance, and flexibility, which has certainly been a difference-maker on the course. More power with less effort, leading to more control while maintaining distance. I appreciate what Mike has done for me, my golf game, and my health.

Thank you to all of the ladies who participated in the LGA MemberMember Tournament! We hope you had a great time on the course and enjoyed the beautiful weather. The day was filled with excitement, including a two-way tie for first place that was settled in a sudden-death playoff, and a four-way tie for third place, which came down to a thrilling putt-off.

Congratulations to the Overall Champions Zack Miller and Connor Flach, with an impressive aggregate score of six in the shootout, and a big round of applause to all the flight winners.
The numbers are in, and as of September 30, 2024, caddie rounds have been exceptional! We sincerely thank the membership for their continued support of the Caddie Program. A total of 3,226 caddie rounds have been played, with 2,457 being walking rounds, and 769 as forecaddie rounds. Out of the total, an impressive 810 rounds were completed by youth caddies—AMAZING! 381 members have taken a caddie at least once, with many doing so regularly.
To show our appreciation, we’ll be hosting a complimentary cocktail party, with the date to be announced in the near future. As highlighted in June Lifestyle’s The Caddie Corner, we’ll be giving away exciting raffle prizes, including golf getaways, equipment, and the grand prize of four suite tickets to the 2025 BMW Championship at Caves Valley! Stay tuned and get ready to mark your calendars!
In golf, a Mongolian reversal is a sudden change in circumstances where a golfer unexpectedly finds themselves in a favorable position. On Wednesday, September 25, you could say Greg Jones experienced a version of this when he was unexpectedly recognized by the Western Golf Association and Evans Scholars Foundation (WGAESF) for his countless hours of dedication to building youth caddie programs in the Baltimore area. Even as he transitions into retirement in his role as Professional Emeritus, Greg continues to make BCC a special place by expanding opportunities for youth in Greater Baltimore. His efforts are truly bringing the slogan “Take a caddie, change a life” to life for so many young people. I guess you could say Greg is also helping to create Mongolian reversals for the youth in our community.
Congratulations, Greg, for your well deserved recognition!
Like all warm-season grasses, as soil temperatures drop and winter approaches, the bermudagrasses go dormant. We continue implementing a two-grass system by seeding perennial ryegrass on the Driving Range and teaching tees, which remain heavily used, in mid-September. This system utilizes the strongest grass on each of the tees during the period of the year when they grow best. Bermudagrass is used in the summer when temperatures average between 80-95 degrees, and perennial ryegrass is used when temperatures range between 60-75 degrees. However, we will not be over seeding the tees on the West Course, as studies have shown this practice to be detrimental to the long-term health and playability of the warm-season grass. Fall is the ideal time to prepare the courses for the next golf season, and this starts with core aeration and sand topdressing of greens on the West Course.
These vital maintenance practices will be completed on the greens as follows:
• October 29-November 1 - West Course is closed for green aeration and topdressing
• November 4-7 - East Course is closed for core aeration, followed by Dryject Sand Injection, and deep tine aeration. Once complete, this is followed by heavy topdressing with sand
• Week of December 2 - East and West course fairway aeration
Fall is the optimal time to repair your lawn with cool-season species such as turf type tall fescue due to shorter daylight hours, cool nights and warm days that are ideal for germination and establishment from seed (60-75 degrees), lack of weed and disease pressure, and an abundance of natural moisture. Throughout the fall, our team will be seeding and sodding thin and bare areas affected by the stress of this summer throughout the property. In addition, we will be aerating and seeding areas in the roughs that are thin due to high volumes of cart and maintenance traffic throughout the season, including around the clubhouse and grounds.
As a reminder, we experience frost in November when the nighttime and morning temperatures (the coldest part of the day) drop to a point where water freezes inside the plant and forms very sharp ice crystals. Pressure from foot, vehicular, and animals on rigid, frozen turf ruptures the cells within the plant, and this causes injury or even death of the plant. Delays in morning start times may be necessary due to this weather event.
One way to ensure the courses are in the best possible condition is by replacing your divot following your shot from the fairway or tee. This will ensure the quickest recovery versus filling the divot
with the seed and soil mix in the carts, which takes more than eight weeks to recover now that temperatures are much colder.
Our Grounds & Golf Maintenance Team works diligently to keep the greens free of foliage, but there may be occasions when we cannot keep up with the natural elements. Last year, we introduced battery-powered blowers in specific areas around the greens, and we will continue that offering this year on both the East and West courses. These blowers will be strategically placed at the greens where leaves tend to accumulate the most.
You are welcome to use these blowers to remove leaves from the green if they become a hindrance while you're putting. At the start of each day, the blowers will be placed in designated areas to prevent interference with your game.
Enjoy the fall season!
