FIVE FARMS CLUBHOUSE DIAGRAM

To assist members in getting acclimated to the new Five Farms clubhouse, we have created a diagram with the new room names along with the purpose of each room.

Scan the QR code to view the diagram.

ACCESS CONTROL KEYPADS

On Monday, October 3, the Club will be replacing all of the access control keypads at both our Roland Park and Five Farms campuses with a new system. The new system requires all codes to be six digits. Currently, your access code is your member number, followed by the pound sign (#). This means that if your current code is less than six digits, there will be leading zeros.

EXAMPLE

Current Code: 222# New System Code: 000222#

All members will receive an email and text reminder prior to Monday, October 3, along with signage placed at all of the new keypads with instructions following the transition.

Why Work with a HEALTH, LIFE, & WELLNESS COACH?

It’s not always easy to achieve a health goal on your own. Sometimes, you need a partner to provide the right motivation and encouragement—which is exactly what a Health, Life, & Wellness Coach does.

A Health Coach helps clients achieve various health goals and is an excellent resource for improving your overall well-being. Despite our best intentions, it’s hard to sustain healthy behaviors. We may start out strictly following a new routine, but after a few weeks, we might lose motivation, or maybe something in our lives gets us off track. A Coach is there to provide the accountability, support, and encouragement we need to push through. Even the simple act of scheduling weekly checkins can keep people accountable.

Working with a Certified Health, Life, & Wellness Coach allows clients to take stock of all the aspects of their lives that impact their health. With these insights in mind, a Coach can recommend realistic strategies to reach a well-being goal based on each individual’s unique path and circumstances. ◆

FITNESS & WELLNESS

On behalf of the BCC Golf Team, we would like to sincerely thank the members and guests who participated in this year's Gentlemen's Invitational!

Going into the final rounds, a few teams thought they had some flights locked, but we all know anything can happen on any given Saturday. We had 20 flight-winning teams compete in an all new playoff format playing East Course #3, #8, and #9. The showdown started off tremendous, with a group having a birdie putt on #3 end up putting the ball off the green! As groups started to gather around #9, Brian

Martin drained a side winding 10-footer to take the lead at Net 10! It all came down to the last putt from Philadelphia Cricket flight winners JC Beese and Conor Sanders, which sealed the deal at Net 9!

A special thank you to our Invitational Committee for all of their hard work and dedication to make this event truly memorable: Ted Bowes, Mason Champion, Tom Halleron, John Martindale, Jason Sevier, and Richie Taylor.

We look forward to seeing you all next year! ◆

Greenkeeper’s Update

With summer in the rear-view mirror, fall is the best time to repair your lawn with cool-season species such as turftype tall fescue. This is due to shorter daylight hours, cool nights and warm days (60-75 degrees) that are ideal for germination and establishment from seed, the lack of weed and disease pressure, and the abundance of natural moisture.

At the Club, we have overseeded perennial ryegrass on our Driving Range and bermudagrass tees throughout the West Course. This is part of a two-grass system strategy that utilizes the warm-season grasses in the hot summer months and cool-season grass in the cool months of fall, winter, and spring. This season, our Team will be seeding and sodding thin and bare areas throughout the property affected by the stress of summer. In addition, we will be aerating and seeding areas in the roughs that are thin due to high volumes of cart and maintenance traffic, including sod installed around the clubhouse and grounds. As a reminder, we can experience frost during October when night and morning temperatures (the coldest part of the day) will drop to a point where water freezes inside the plant and forms sharp ice crystals. Pressure from foot, vehicular, and animal traffic on rigid, frozen turf ruptures the cells within the plant, causing injury or even death of the plant. Delays in morning start times may be necessary due to this weather event.

We completed the repair work on the Driving Range tees and fairway a little over a year ago. We are pleased with the performance of the IronCutter bermudagrass to date and the contrast between the bermudagrass in the field and the Innovation zoysiagrass target greens at the back of the Range. As cold weather arrives, perennial ryegrass was seeded on the Range tees for improved playability. However, once the grass stops growing, and recovery from divots becomes non-existent, all play will be from the allweather mats on both ends of the Range. The Range field will become dormant or brown, and the zoysia targets will

be painted with a green pigment that is safe on grass and provides excellent definition throughout the winter.

We appreciated your patience as we completed the final phase of regrassing 29 tees on the West Course to bermudagrass. The tees have been completed, except the shared tee on #7 West and #2 East. Again, these tees were overseeded with perennial ryegrass, and we continue to utilize a two-grass system, and the other tees were converted to bermudagrass in the past. ◆

Later this fall, we will be completing course aeration on greens, tees, and fairways as follows:

OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 3

The West Course will be closed for green aeration

NOVEMBER 7-10

The East Course will be closed for green and tee aeration and dethatching

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 28

East & West Course fairways will be core aerated

PLAYING

PADDLE CAN IMPROVE YOUR TENNIS GAME

Tennis players are flocking to the paddle court now more than ever. The game is evolving rapidly at the club and professional levels with the influx of new players with racquet skills. While coming into paddle with existing racquet skills is an advantage, it is not necessarily the key to success. Some of the best players in the game are not tennis players, and many are. There are some obvious differences between the two racquet sports, but I argue that they are more similar than different and that picking up paddle will improve your tennis game.

The primary differences between paddle and tennis are the court, equipment, stroke production, and mentality. The paddle court is much smaller than a tennis court. You could fit about four paddle courts inside of one tennis court. A paddle is much shorter than a racquet, and the ball is much heavier than solid rubber. The smaller court, shorter paddle, and heavier ball make paddle a game of controlled compact strokes. In tennis, we are taught to be aggressive and put the ball away at the right opportunity. In paddle, that mentality will lead to a lot of frustration. The ability to play the ball off of the screens makes it extremely difficult to hit a winner. Therefore, our aggressive mentality must shift to patience. Paddle matches aren’t won. Instead, they are not lost.

Paddle was created to allow tennis players to continue playing a racquet sport in the winter. That’s why many of the rules are exactly the same as tennis. Learning paddle enables tennis players to practice underdeveloped parts of

their game that will directly transfer to the tennis court. For example, the serve and volley is an effective doubles tactic that many players are not confident to execute on the tennis court. Paddle forces you to practice this. Overheads are another skill many tennis players neglect that is developed on the paddle court. Lastly, overly aggressive tennis players will develop patience. They will make fewer mistakes on the tennis court because paddle improves your decision-making.

In conclusion, tennis and paddle have some key differences, but the two sports are more similar than different. Tennis players can find great success on the paddle court, and it will improve their tennis game simultaneously. Whether you are a tennis player or not, give paddle a try this season.

If you are interested, reach out to a member of our Racquets Team today!
