ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE
The Admissions Committee welcomes comments from the BCC membership regarding any of the foregoing candidates. All communication with the Admissions Committee is held in strict confidence. The current members of the Admissions Committee and their contact information are as follows:
Great People Make Favorite Places
BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
Staff Member of the Month
JULY
Brent Dennison, Assistant Golf Professional
Brent consistently goes above and beyond his normal responsibilities to ensure that all our members and their guests have an exceptional experience in the golf operation. June and July were particularly busy with gentlemen’s golf events, and Brent’s hard work and attention to detail resulted in first-class events. In addition, Brent is always willing to step in and assist his fellow staff members, whether in the Golf department or other departments throughout the Club. He truly exemplifies our core values and makes BCC a favorite place for our members.
Exceptional Leadership Award
JUNE
Mike Stanton, East Course Superintendent
Despite the intense summer heat, Mike's leadership has been outstanding in maintaining topnotch playing conditions and stepping up to the plate when issues arise. On Saturday, June 22, with temperatures soaring to 96 degrees, our irrigation system faced a shutdown due to a "Low Level Float Alarm" at 10:09pm. This issue affected several areas, including the East Course, south Driving Range tee, Driving Range field, holes #4 through #6 West, and the clubhouse grounds. Mike quickly addressed the problem, identified a faulty float sensor, and had the system up and running by 11:17pm. The following day, we experienced another all-time heat record. His swift response was crucial in preventing significant damage and ensuring excellent conditions for our members and guests. We are very fortunate to have Mike as a member of our team!
JULY
Justin Gladhill, West Course Superintendent
We are honored to present Justin with the Exceptional Leadership Award—a recognition that has been in the making since 2019! His visionary leadership and unwavering dedication were instrumental in successfully guiding a complex three-year project to regrass the West Course tees with cold-hardy Bermudagrass. Under Justin’s guidance, the team navigated the challenges of maintaining the West Course during the busiest season, all while completing the extensive work with minimal disruption to play. The results of his efforts speak volumes—significant cost savings, reduced water usage, and vastly improved course conditions. Justin’s commitment to excellence, innovative approach to turf management, and relentless pursuit of perfection have left a lasting, positive impact on the Club’s facilities, making him truly deserving of this award.

IMMUNITY
Enhances cell health and strengthens the immune system.
SAUNA USAGE PROTOCOL
Proper sauna use is important; just like we warm up and cool down our bodies when we exercise, there are some basic steps to follow to ensure you gain maximum benefits of using a sauna.
Before Use:
▶ Drink a minimum of 8 oz of water to prepare your body for an increase in core body temperature
▶ Pre-heat the sauna for 45-60 minutes. The sauna will heat up approximately one degree per minute, depending on room temperature
▶ Lay down towels on the bench to absorb sweat. Keep an extra around to wipe your face during sessions
DETOXIFICATION
Promotes deep, productive sweat for natural healing, health maintenance, and longevity.
MUSCLE RECOVERY
Delivers more oxygen to muscle cells for faster repair and pain relief.
RELAXATION
Provides therapeutic light and heat for physical restoration and mental refreshment.
SLEEP
Supports relaxation and a healthy circadian rhythm for better sleep.
During Use:
▶ Adjust your sauna sessions to fit your body’s needs. Start with 10-15 minutes at 100°F every other day to get your body used to infrared therapy. Gradually increase to 40-minute daily sessions in the optimal temperature range. Listen to your body and adjust as needed
▶ Like exercise or healthy eating, consistent sauna use takes time to show results. Initially, you might not sweat much, but over time, sweating and detox will increase, leaving you rejuvenated
After Use:
▶ Rehydrate with at least 24 oz of water or an electrolyte drink
▶ Dry off and cool down naturally, or with a refreshing shower
How long is a typical session, and how often can you take a session?
Most people partake in a 30-45 minute session, three to four times a week, but it is safe to use every day and at whatever heat suits you best.

THE CADDIE CORNER
2 ND ANNUAL EVANS SCHOLAR GUEST DAY
Our second annual Evans Scholar Guest Day on Thursday, July 18, was memorable and enjoyable for all participants. We had 84 members and their guests enjoy a beautiful day of food, golf, and camaraderie on the course, all while supporting the Evans Scholars Foundation. Every group had either walking caddies or forecaddies, with a total of 40 caddies participating, including three of our current Evans Scholars.
A portion of each entry fee was donated to the Evans Scholars Program, and several golf trips to destinations around the country were auctioned off. In total, nearly $30,000 ($29,500) was raised through the event and donated to the Evans Scholars Program on behalf of Baltimore Country Club.
After dinner, we had the privilege of showing a video featuring one of our current Evans Scholars, Varada Maulkhan, from the 2022 BMW Championship at Caves Valley. Following the video, our Scholars joined us for a special Q&A session, sharing what the Evans Scholarship has meant to them and their families.
Our Hall of Fame Auctioneer and BCC member Ray Daue then led a lively auction, where more golf trips and special items were auctioned off. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the members, their guests, our Caddie Committee, and the entire BCC staff for making this day so special.
If you are interested in learning more about the WGA Evans Scholars Foundation, please visit wgaesf.org.
Greg Jones, PGA Professional Emeritus
Country Club of Maryland Caddie Program
I would like to take this opportunity to thank PGA Head Golf Professional Mike Healy and General Manager Kate Reinhart of the Country Club of Maryland, along with their Board and membership, for re-instituting their Caddie Program on the club’s 99th anniversary. This past Memorial Day weekend, their members began taking caddies again after more than 50 years. They now have eight dedicated youth caddies working this summer and into the fall months.
Scan the QR code to view a video from Mike explaining the program to their members, along with a bit of history. It’s truly something special.

THE HARTON SEMPLE TROPHY
By John Vonei II
In 1953, e United States Golf Association secured the administration (and ownership) of the tournament, changing the name from the “Ladies Open” to the U.S. Women’s Open Championship. e USGA commissioned an impressive new sterling silver two-handled cup produced by J.E. Cadwell and Company. In 1992, the original was retired and a replica named in honor of Harton S. Semple, President of the USGA—1974 and 1975, has been presented to each successive winner. It is a [7/8] replica of the J.E. Cadwell and Company trophy that is displayed at Baltimore Country Club, in recognition of hosting the 1988 Open.
e U.S. Women’s Open is the premier championship in women’s golf. e 43rd playing of the Open was held on the Five Farms East Course— July 21-24,1988. BCC member, J. Reginald “Reg” Murphy, Publisher and CEO of e Baltimore Sun, was General Chairman. In his remarks Murphy said: ere is no “best place” to watch the Open because there are so many. Whether from the practice tee, the rst tee, the hillside overlooking the 10th hole, the con uence of the third green, fourth tee, seventh green and eighth tee or the special di culties of Hell’s Half Acres, the golf will be great and exciting.
As it turned out, play could not have been more dramatic. Five former Open Champions missed the cut. At the conclusion of the First Round, on ursday, July 21, een competitors were separated by four strokes. Twentytwo-year-old Liselotte Neumann, from Sweden, posted 67 to lead the eld. Patty Sheehan, winner of 18 championships going into the 1988 Open, was three strokes back. During the second round America’s Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper tied Neumann for the lead, at 3 under. On Saturday, July 23, Neumann shot 69 to regain the lead. Inkster and Pepper faded. Odds on favorite, Patty Sheehan, came roaring back shooting a near awless 68, to capture second place—two strokes back. In the nal round, with over 12,000 fans following, Newman held o Sheehan’s back nine charge (shooting another 69) to win the Open by 3 strokes. Her 4 round total was 277. It would be Neumann’s only major LPGA victory.
April through October 2024, we will be featuring a trophy from the Major Championships hosted at BCC. is trophy is on display in the Trophy Bar at Five Farms.
In honor of the 20th anniversary (2008) of her win, Liselotte Neumann returns to Five Farms with her caddie.
Liselotte Neumann became the second youngest player to ever win the Open, and the rst Swedish golfer to win a major championship.
SUMMER HEAT COURSE PROTECTION
Although fall is right around the corner, the heat continues to persist as we have experienced one of the hottest summers on record for the Middle Atlantic region. We need your help to protect the compromised rooting structure of our bentgrass fairways and bermudagrass tees.
BERMUDAGRASS ON DRIVING RANGE TEES
During the hot summer months, bermudagrass thrives on the Driving Range tees, especially in temperatures between 80-95 degrees. Despite our efforts in 2020 to expand the Range tees, they remain undersized. Proper practice is crucial to maximize grass usage. By using the preferred divot pattern (linear), we can ensure the health and longevity of our bermudagrass tees throughout the season.
DISADVANTAGES OF OTHER PATTERNS
SCATTERED DIVOT PATTERN
Removes the most turf and uses the largest area, causing frequent rotation of tee stations.
GOLF CART GUIDELINES
Please use cart paths where available & avoid driving off the edges to prevent wear.
CONCENTRATED DIVOT PATTERN Creates large voids in the turf, hindering recovery.
USE CAUTION WHEN BRAKING Avoid sudden or heavy braking on the fairways to lessen damage.
PREFERRED METHOD LINEAR DIVOT PATTERN
Place each shot directly behind the previous divot, creating a linear pattern. This removes minimal turf and allows for quick recovery, with 15-20 shots before moving to create a new line of divots. Maintain at least four inches of live turf between divot strips.
AVOID SHARP TURNS Make gentle turns to minimize stress on the grass.
