GREENFOLDER STORIES

What sets Baltimore Country Club apart from other country clubs? Our people! Our staff members take every step to go above and beyond to accomplish our Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Often, there are easy ways to make a positive impression on our members from saying happy birthday to congratulations on an award. However, not being afraid to make the big gestures is what distinguishes us.

We love sharing these stories of the Simple Truth! Submit your Simple Truth experience by filling out the Green Folder Stories form, located at the bottom of the Park & Farms email, in Park & Farms, the staff webpage, or scan the QR codes in the staff breakrooms. BCC encourages all members to submit their own or fellow staff members’ Green Folder Stories.

APRIL STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Anjel Querubin J-1 F&B Intern

Since joining us as a J1 Intern from the Philippines nearly a year ago, Anjel has been a true rockstar. She excels in every role she’s assigned and consistently takes the initiative to go above and beyond in her daily tasks. Anjel is the friendly face we see when hosting wedding tastings, bridal parties, Ladies’ Tuesday Bowling Leagues, and Early Bird events. She is also growing into a fantastic cocktail server. Anjel takes pride in doing things the right way, no matter the role she fills. Even when there seems to be little to do, she always finds something to work on.

APRIL EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

Chris Jeffers, Assistant Controller

Under Chris’ leadership, the accounting department has seen remarkable improvements in workflow, productivity, as well as in positive attitude. Chris is the cornerstone of the accounting team, always being the go-to person for any accounting-related queries or issues. Whether it’s a complex financial query or a simple question, Chris is always ready to provide guidance and support, ensuring that everyone has the tools and information they need to succeed.

1ST AID/CPR/AED TRAINING

Though this a required 2-year training and certification for all full-time staff, this is a lifesaving tool to have on your belt. You will be taught all the right steps to take if you find yourself in a health emergency situation, and how to identify risks. There is nothing in the world more empowering than knowledge, and this is one of the most useful and pertinent skill sets to obtain. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, be the one that is coolheaded, confident, and responsible. A step to becoming that leader is making sure you are certified with this extensive and elaborative training.

FIVE FARMS VEGETABLE GARDEN TOUR

Did you know that you have most likely eaten vegetables that were cultivated and harvested on our own grounds? Director of Horticulture Cathy Wagner and an innovator at BCC, will be showing us around some of the pride and joy that is fresh produce. Not only do we help the land with sustainable practices, but we supply the kitchen as well. Come on the Five Farms vegetable garden tour, and maybe you will open doors for your own garden!

BECOME A CLASS INSTRUCTOR!

Do you ever find yourself wanting to bring your hobby to work? Let us help make that happen for you! If you have an interest and information on certain subjects, we would love to offer you a platform to speak on them. Teaching a class can be more enriching than attending as a student. Not only will your coworkers get to know you a bit more, you will be able to share unique insight and knowledge for them to keep. If you would like the opportunity to host a class, please contact Lauren Kourtsounis at lkourtsounis@bcc1898.com and we can start planning your course!

All staff instructors will receive credit for conducting classes, but must still complete the required credit categories as a participant.

QUARTERLY PULSE SURVEY INITIATIVE

It’s officially been one year since rolling out our Quarterly Pulse Survey Initiative. You have spoken, we have listened, and we have acted on the feedback provided. The responses allowed us to have a peek behind the curtain, to truly understand what is necessary for each of you to thrive at BCC. A huge thank you is in order for all that continue to participate. The more data we collect, the easier it will be to be proactive and anticipatory of a specific positions’ needs and accommodations. While we welcome and appreciate all feedback, please understand not everything can be addressed, and courses of action do take time to implement. As a reminder, all staff are always welcome to attend the bi-weekly leadership meetings to hear club updates, offer input, and network with staff from all departments!

Clubhouse Operations

Food & Beverage

• We have been sharing emails and printing Happometer feedback to help praise the staff during pre-shift line up. We are continuously finding ways to highlight staff performance. Additional communication has been provided during pre-shift to the staff. Leadership has been transparent in providing and sharing more club items with managers to help them better know what’s happening so they can communicate that information to the staff

• New side work sheets have been created in the restaurants to bring more organization and distribute assignments fairly

• Managers are attending more Leadership meetings and BEO to have a better understanding of what is going on at the Club, not just in their departments

• Jared Hedrick has been promoted to the management team and leadership is training and distributing new responsibilities to the F&B Managers to support the overall team

• Kayla recently completed a new uniform inventory to make sure the team has the uniforms they need, and we will order new as uniforms needed

• Additional polishing rags were ordered for glassware

• Brighter light bulbs were installed in Barber area at Five Farms and the Roland Park Men’s Locker Room

General

• Kudos Korner has been added to Park & Farms to share positive feedback regarding staff from other staff

• The “Wow Wall” is updated monthly to ensure that our staff are aware of their most recent recognized accomplishments (for more information see page 17)

• We have transitioned from performance reviews to quarterly conversations to foster a positive and encouraging management style

• Added more frequent opportunities for staff to connect with one another outside of their own department, like cook-offs, potlucks, crafts, BCC YOUniversity classes, and friendly competitions

• Departmental Onboarding was rolled out a month ago, which is extensive training for all new staff on departmental policies, procedures, and club culture

SEATED FIGURE FOUR

Upavistha Ardha Utkatasana (Seated Half Chair Pose) posture is especially helpful for those of us who sit at a desk most of the day or drive for long periods of time, with our hip joints in a fixed, forward-facing position.

BENEFITS

• Opens the hip joints and surrounding muscles

• Alleviates pressure on the piriformis (the piriformis can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause Sciatic, Piriformis syndrome, and general low back pain)

• Stretches glutes and inner thighs

HOW TO PRACTICE

1. Cross your right shin over your left thigh

2. Plant your left foot firmly on the ground and flex your right foot

3. Hinge from your hips and lean slightly forward until you feel sensation in your outer right hip. Keep your spine long and chest forward

4. Stay here for eight to ten breaths and then switch sides

BREATHWORK/PRANAYAMA

Breathwork, or Pranayama, is an ancient yoga practice used to calm the mind and strengthen the lungs and surrounding muscles we use to breathe. It is the general practice of breath regulation, and is used by many, from Navy Seals to doctors, to children. Prana = energy flow Pranayama = energy/breath control

BENEFITS

• Decreases stress

• Improves sleep quality

• Increases mindfulness

• Reduces high blood pressure

• Calms the nervous system

CHAIR YOGA is a way of practicing traditional yoga postures in a seated position or with the support of a sturdy chair. For seated postures, chairs with wheels are ok. When practicing standing with the support of a chair, chairs with wheels are highly discouraged!

SQUARE OR BOX BREATHING TECHNIQUE

Sama Vritti Pranayama (Same Flow Breath control) breathing technique is beneficial when experiencing high stress levels at work, at home, sitting in traffic, or while on hold with customer service!

It actively distracts your mind in a healthy way (bye -bye doomscrolling!) and returns your breath back to a relaxed, more natural rhythm. It heightens our ability to think clearly, which can get clouded when we are overly stressed. It’s easy, accessible, and can be done anywhere and anytime, day or night. If you struggle falling asleep at night, box breathing can be especially helpful as the counting ritual is a modern-day way of counting sheep.

HOW TO PRACTICE

1. You can practice box breathing in any position – standing, lying down, seated, etc

2. Start by taking a couple of normal breaths. This lets the mind know we are about to shift focus to our breath

3. Begin by breathing in for four counts

4. Hold the inhale for four counts

5. Exhale for four counts

6. Hold the exhale for four counts

7. Repeat at least four times

8. You can also add a visualization to this technique by drawing a box in your mind as you breathe and count along

We are partnering with Happy Helpers for the Homeless, with an event called the Soup-er Bowl. This is for children in Baltimore and Anne Arundel county who depend on school lunches and meal services throughout the school year. This last winter, BCC made a bountiful non-perishable food donation to Happy Helpers, filling numerous baskets for children and their parents. By donating any of the following food items, you will be filling empty stomachs that would be lost without the kindness of others. Thank you to all that are willing and able to give, you are truly setting the example for others.

The New Wow Wall

Outside our Five Farms Breakroom, we had a Wow Wall that showed off our amazing staff and the appreciation they received from the members, but it was often outdated. If you walk past the Wow Wall now, you will see that it is FULL of wonderful reviews of not only the staff, but the experience here at BCC. These reviews are pulled monthly from the Club’s survey system, Happometer. That means after a positive interaction, the member felt compelled to highlight, you, our team, or the entirety of what made their day/night so special. It shines through the reviews that everyone brings compassion to hospitality. Thank you for being so great and making BCC a favorite place.
