BUSAN, MICE DESTINATION THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOUR MICE EVENT The charm of Busan goes beyond the beautiful beaches, stunning skyline, incredible food, natural scenery, world-class infrastructure, and endless shopping. Visitors who have walked her maze of city streets, hiked the myriad mountain trails, or relaxed on her sandy shores will all agree that what sets Busan apart is the charming mixture of the old and the new. From serene, thousand-year-old temple sites to the tallest residential skyscrapers in Asia, Busan fuses the elements of what the world was in centuries past and where it’s headed into the near and distant future. Busan offers it all as a convenient, centrally-located hub for Northeast Asia. While the Haeundae Beach area of Busan — with its beaches, mountains, temples, shopping malls, hotels, and convention facilities—often gets most of the world’s attention, Busan is home to more than just one city center. Be it the expansive shopping district of Nampo-dong, home to the massive Jagalchi Market; Seomyeon, with its countless shops to please the most discriminating fashionista; or Dongnae, the ancient city center with its long history, mountain temples, fortresses, and hot springs, there is something for everyone. And all are easily accessible via a short trip on the city’s convenient public transportation system.

010

YOUR TIME IS PRECIOUS THE WORLD OF BUSAN When hearing the name Busan for the first time, people may ask, “what does it have to offer my organization?” The answer is that Busan offers more than just cutting-edge convention and exhibition facilities. It’s more than its accommodations that fit every budget and taste. It’s more than a city with world-class transportation and communication infrastructures. It’s also an area brimming with the perfect mix of history, food, culture, scenery, activities, and everyday convenience.

ASPECTS OF BUSAN SEEM ALMOST LOST IN TIME, WHILE OTHER PARTS BELONG TO THE FUTURE. | WHY BUSAN?

011

WHERE HISTORY AND THE FUTURE COME TOGETHER A LONG HISTORY AND A BRIGHT FUTURE The area traces its history back to the 2nd century, when Busan was known a Geochisan, or “rough mountain.” A royal decree in the 15th century designated Busan as the primary trading port with neighboring Japan. It has since grown into the world’s 5th busiest port and emerged as a global hub for travellers and business people from around the world. Throughout Busan you will see the charismatic contrast of old and new. Whether you are standing beneath the towering skyscrapers of Marine City or beneath the great Buddha statue at Yonggungsa Temple, whether shopping the ultra-modern Shinsegae Department Store or the historic Jagalchi Market, this blend of history and modernity is a big part of what gives Busan her charm.

FEEL THE OCEAN BEAT THE SEASIDE ADVANTAGE One of Busan’s major draws is its beaches. What better way to relax after a long day of meetings than by soaking up the rays lounging under a beach umbrella or feeling the warm sand and cool water beneath your toes? Visitors can enjoy a range of watersport activities, from surfing to Jet Ski, and from sailing to scuba diving, at one of the five main beaches around the city. There are also hours of coastal walking paths to be traversed, offering breathtaking views of both the city and the ocean from every angle. Hiking is the most popular pastime here in Busan, and it won’t take long to see why once you step foot onto our coastal and mountain trails. And, of course, let’s not forget about the seafood. Busan has a long history of fishing and feasting on the ocean’s bounty. Those centuries of experience have led to a diverse seafood menu and a culinary mastery that makes seafood dining in Busan an experience that is not to be missed. The city also offers several scenic tributaries including Korea’s largest river, the Nakdong river, which winds its way across the Korean peninsula for 525 km and is home to several sanctuaries for migratory birds.

THE 13TH APEC SUMMIT In 2005, presidents and prime ministers from 21 pacific rim countries gathered in Busan for the 13th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. To prepare for the event, the city constructed the Nurimaru APEC House, situated right on the coastline among the beautiful, natural landscape of Dongbaek Island. The opulent meeting halls and event rooms of the APEC House continue to be a popular convention choice for businesses and organizations due to their stunning views of the sea, nearby Haeundae Beach, and Busan’s famed Diamond Bridge. The 2005 APEC Summit was also the inspiration for the 1st Busan Fireworks Festival, an event that continues to memorialize the summit with its amazing displays each fall.

BEOMEOSA TEMPLE GEUMJEONG | A PEACEFUL SETTING

Beomeosa is Busan’s largest and most famous Buddhist temple. The site has an ancient history dating back to 678, when it was first constructed by the famous monk Uisang during the reign of Silla King Munmu. At its largest, during the Goryeo dynasty, it was much larger than it is today—with over 360 rooms and more than a thousand monks in residence. The temple was burned to the ground in 1592 during the Japanese invasion. It was reconstructed in 1602 and then again in 1613 after an accidental fire. The main hall, Daeungjeon, and the front gate, Iljumun, date back to the 1613 reconstruction. Beomeosa is a popular destination for anyone searching for a bit of history, culture, or just a place to unwind in a gorgeous natural setting. You might not expect that it is also a great place to hold your convention, seminar, or meeting. Sit among the historic temple buildings and natural splendor that Beomeosa has to offer, while engaging your colleagues and networking in a setting that puts everyone at ease.

With its spectacular view of the colorful Diamond Bridge and skyscraper-dotted Marine City, Gwangalli Beach combines natural, as well as architectural beauty, to capture the eyes and the imaginations of visitors year-round. This 1.4-km-long, 64-meter-wide beach is famous for its fine sand and for the variety of marine leisure activities that are enjoyed by citizens and tourists year round. Gwangalli is popular with swimmers, windsurfers, and jet-skiers and is home to rental facilities for these and other activities. If you’re hungry, a wide variety of seafood restaurants line her shore. SONGJEONG BEACH SONGJEONG | NATURAL TRANQUILITY

Just a short taxi ride up the coast or on the commuter train, Songjeong’s sands serve as the hub of Busan’s surfing community, and anglers flock to reel in their catch along its pristine shoreline. If the ever-popular Haeundae Beach proves to be a little too much for you, Songjeong and its much wider offering of sand to plop yourself down on offers a perfect alternative.

Spacious and usually uncrowded, Songjeong lets you soak in your natural surroundings without distraction. Just off the beach, lining the shore and the nearby streets, is a wealth of restaurants offering the catch of the day. There are also wine bars, cafes, and an assortment of cuisines to please most anyone.

OTHER BEACHES

COASTAL BUSAN | WONDROUS WATERS SONGDO BEACH Opened in 1913 as Korea’s first official beach, Songdo Beach is particularly beloved for its night view and its famed sea diving board. Songdo first became popular in the 1960s for its scenic coastlines. Over the following decades, it was damaged by frequent typhoons and subsequent sand loss, but a five-year restoration program, completed in 2005 has returned it to much of the original beauty, and its popularity with locals is ever increasing. Located just 3 km from Jagalchi Market, Songdo offers a romantic backdrop for couples looking for some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the city. DADAEPO BEACH Located at the estuary of the Nakdong River and just 8 km from downtown, Dadaepo Beach is a great place to chill out and have a picnic, collect a few seashells, and go for a swim in the shallow surf. Just up the river is the best place in Korea to check out migratory birds feeding in the marshes all along the shore. The Nakdong is the longest flowing body of water on the peninsula, and the beach at its mouth is just under a kilometer long and a relatively unknown spot for tourists due to its distance from the city center. But Dadaepo is well worth a subway and bus ride if you’re looking to spend the day.

The name of the area comes from King Taejong Muyeol (604-661), who was fond of practicing archery there following the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. While you’re in Taejongdae, enjoy the trail-filled hills of evergreen forests and several attractions for tourists, such as an observatory, an amusement park, a lighthouse and a cruise ship terminal. And whatever you do, don’t miss out on eating lunch or dinner at the BBQ seafood tents! IGIDAE & ORYUKDO If you look west from Gwangalli Beach, you will see the beginnings of Igidae Park. Igidae is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers alike, where you can walk along the coast on a walking path, complete with suspension bridges built into the rocky cliffs of the ocean shore. The path takes you all the way to Oryukdo, where the Oryukdo Islands jut out into a span of never-ending ocean, and the lighthouse stands guard over the southern tip of Busan. YONGGUNGSA TEMPLE GIJANG | PEACE BY THE SEA

The beautiful seaside location of Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, conveniently located a short taxi ride from the central convention area, is one of Korea’s most spiritual sites. Founded in 1376 during the Goryeo Dynasty, the temple has a long history and is a favorite Busan destination. While always a beautiful and peaceful spot, the best time of year to visit Yonggungsa Temple is April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Buddha’s Birthday celebration is also in April, when thousands of lanterns are hung along the temple paths among the cherry blossoms, creating a dazzling array of colors. While climbing the temple’s 108 steps (a highly symbolic number in Buddhism), stop to enjoy the breathtaking view of the ocean while experiencing a calming peace from the busy city nearby. Stare out into the ocean sky and meditate to the sound of the waves breaking against the rocky shore. Just perfect.

BEOMEOSA TEMPLE GEUMJEONG | A PIECE OF HISTORY

Featured on CNN as well as numerous other media outlets, Beomeosa has become a must-see tourist spot on nearly every visitor’s itinerary. This sprawling, historic temple is nestled in the foothills of the Geumjeong mountain range. Over 1,300 years old, Beomeosa remains home to dozens of resident monks who quietly stroll the grounds amidst the serene structures of spiritual history. Revel in mountain scenery, explore the intricately detailed temple halls or, if you have the time, enjoy an overnight temple stay. Many of the original structures were razed by fire during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 during the seven-year Imjin War. A long series of renovations culminated in a complete restoration in 1713, which is what visitors to the incredibly scenic temple complex still enjoy to this day. The best times of year to go are at the onset of either the spring or fall when the surrounding forests light up with spectacular colors that make the serene Beomeosa Temple all the more impressive. While roaming the spacious complex, check out Iljumun, the three-story pagoda with four pillars, which was originally constructed in the 9th century. There are also the seven royal palace wings and pavilions, with the historic three gates, and eleven secluded hermitages. The beautiful surroundings and richly historical Beomeosa have been designated as a natural Korean monument and as the thousands of annual visitors that walk its storied paths will attest, it is a must-see when visiting Busan.

GEUMJEONG SANSEONG GEUMJEONG | THE TOP OF THE CITY

Jutting from the earth like a massive stone spine, Geumjeongsan is Busan’s largest mountain and premier hiking destination. Atop this mountain is a 17-km-long stone fortress built in 1707 as a response to the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592-1598. The fortress was essentially destroyed during the Japanese colonial occupation of the early 20th century, but much of it has since been rebuilt to its original glory. Strap on your hiking boots and spend a whole day trekking along the ridge of Geumjeongsan, savoring the expansive views of the city as well as soaking up the long history of the area. Hikers can reach the top via the expansive trail system accessible from most anywhere at the mountain’s base; for those keen on an easier ascent, try riding the famous orange cable car from Geumjeong Park in Oncheongjang.

SANSEONG VILLAGE

GEUMJEONG’S PEAK | MOUNTAIN LIVING Sanseong Village is nestled in a valley just over the summit of Geumjeongsan Mountain, and has become the perfect place to experience a taste of Korean country life right in the middle of Busan. The village is most famous as a culinary destination, with people heading up to feast on the village’s marinated black goat meat. This local delicacy is grilled, served up with a host of side dishes and usually washed down with the tasty Korean rice wine known as makgeolli. In addition to the savory goat, the village’s numerous little restaurants also offer country favorites such as baek suk (slow, pressure-cooked chicken with ginseng and mountain herbs), dotorimuk (acorn jelly salad), dubu kimchi (warm tofu and kimchi), and pajeon (green onion pancake). A meal at Sanseong Village is a perfect way to wrap up a day on the mountain, and many of the eating establishments offer free shuttle service back down to Oncheonjang subway station for their weary, full-bellied customers.

THE GWANGALLI NIGHT SKY GWANGALLI | A SPECTACULAR VIEW

Every large city has a piece of architecture that defines it. For Busan, it’s the Diamond Bridge, the bold, gleaming structure that is the undisputed crown jewel of the city’s collection. The Diamond Bridge was built as a way to hasten the city’s traffic flow, and a drive across it never fails to excite. As practical as it is, the bridge has made an even bigger splash aesthetically. It’s a gorgeous accomplishment, especially when viewed at night from Gwangalli Beach. Walk hand-in-hand with that special someone along the stretch of sand and gaze across the bay to the huge, brightl lit bridge spanning the horizon. Marine City stands to the east of the Diamond Bridge, adding even more magnificence to the Gwangalli view. Busan’s Marine City is comprised of Asia’s tallest apartment buildings, rising up from a resplendent neighborhood of wide sidewalks and spacious pathways. Combined, the Diamond Bridge and Marine City create a view that is sure to become better and better known among the world’s best coastal skylines.

Nowhere is this vista more stunning than near the top of Hwangyeongsan, one of the twin peaks that rise up in the middle of the city. This view is especially splendid at night, when Gwangalli’s Diamond Bridge is lit up in all of her majesty. Several wooden viewing platforms have been constructed where families and sweethearts—young and old—take in the precipitous view of the shimmering city below.

BUSAN BRIDGES AROUND BUSAN | FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE

YEONGDO BRIDGE The Yeongdo Bridge, originally christened in November 1934, is Korea’s only drawbridge. Holding the distinction of being the nation’s first span to connect the mainland to Yeong Island—one of the many islands that make up Korea’s largest port city—it is also the only single-leaf bascule bridge in Korea. The bridge carries deep symbolic meaning from a time when the country was suffering through the devastation of the Korean War. During that time, war refugees from around

the nation descended on the city, which came to be known as the Pusan Perimeter. The bridge became well known as the meeting place for tens of thousands of Koreans who came to Busan to be reunited with family members in front of its span.

071

DIAMOND BRIDGE The Diamond Bridge, also known as Gwangan Bridge, is one of the most spectacular locations in all of Busan. This suspension bridge, completed in 2002, spans a total of 7,420 meters, making it the second longest bridge in the entire country. Voted the #1 tourist attraction in the city, the Diamond Bridge serves the dual purpose of providing a picturesque skyline to the East Sea and a quick connection between the Suyeong and Haeundae districts of Southeastern Busan. The bridge also serves as a host to the city’s very own fireworks festival held in the early days of autumn each year. Whether you’re looking for a quick commute or a romantic backdrop to a picnic on the beach, the Diamond Bridge is there to provide. GEOGA BRIDGE The Geoga Bridge is a major part of the greater Geoje-Busan Fixed Link that connects the port city of Busan with the lucrative shipbuilding industries of Geoje Island. When first opened, this important link cut the travel time between the two areas from 3.5 hours to right around 40 minutes, giving the residents of Busan easy access to both the beautiful beaches of the island and to one of the largest shipyards in the country. The entire Fixed Link crosses three islets and includes one the longest and deepest immersed concrete tunnels in the world. The severely shortened travel time allows Busan residents to enjoy a tranquil weekend getaway on the beach or a much quicker work commute to Geoje’s booming shipbuilding industry. WWW.BTO.OR.KR |

Revelers come to witness the abundance of excellent exhibitions, which has included more than 12,000 maritime relics as well as a replica of the ‘Joseon Missional Ship’, which, at half the size of the actual ship, is the largest of its kind in South Korea. A DAY ON DALMAJI DALMAJI | BEAUTY ON THE HILL

DALMAJI MOON VIEWING ROAD Dalmaji-gil, or “Moon Viewing Road,” separates Haeundae Beach from its northern sister, Seongjeong Beach. The road is great for walking or driving, as it winds along the hillside just above the ocean’s edge and is considered one of the most scenic areas of the city. Dalmaji-gil is surrounded by pine trees on one side and an array of restaurants and cafes on the other, offering up a perfect balance of natural and man-made diversions. It’s an ideal place to linger over a long lunch or a coffee, gazing out through the curtain of pine trees onto the placid, blue ocean beyond. Just off Dalmaji-gil is the Haewoljeong, or Moon Viewing Pavillion. This wooden structure was built in 1997 as an observation platform for the moon and pays tribute to an old folk tale about two lovers who were married nearby. And you don’t want to miss a leisurely stroll through the wooded hills on Moontan Road, a 2.5-km trail, that hugs the scenic shoreline. Dalmaji-gil has also become well known for its Saturday market, featuring arts and crafts made by local artisans. The Art Free Market opens every Saturday from 2-9 p.m. from the month of March until the first of November.

075

DALMAJI GALLERIES & CAFES Busan’s seaside locale, along with its numerous hills and laidback ambiance, is sometimes reminiscent of the city of San Francisco. Nowhere can we see this more than on Dalmaji Hill, which rises up from the far end of Haeundae Beach and offers stunning views of the East Sea. Dalmaji is a residential neighborhood that’s also home to a number of specialty restaurants, cafes, bookstores, and art galleries. It’s a terrific place to spend the afternoon, offering a taste of both the bohemian and the chic, while often bathed in sunlight and the crisp smell of the ocean breeze. Many of the galleries also double as cafes, and vice versa, with many guests enjoying a coffee or tea as they take in works of art. And no visit to Dalmaji is complete without popping into the Dalmaji Mystery Library, the only one of its kind in Korea to solely stock mystery books. The library, which opened in 1992, is located at the very top of the hill.

OLD WORLD VILLAGES BEOMILDONG | LOOK INTO THE PAST

MAECHUKJI VILLAGE Recognizable to some as the setting for the Korean film “Ajosshi,” Maechukji Village is one of several aging, less ritzy neighborhoods in Busan that has reinvented itself as a destination for murals and folk art. Originally a resting place for horses and riders during the Japanese colonial period, the land was eventually reclaimed and a living village constructed. Maechukji Village is located in Beomil 5-dong, just a short walk up the hill from Jwacheon Subway Station, Exit 4. ANCHANG VILLAGE Originally constructed as a shanty town for refugees during the Korean War, Anchang Village offers a vivid view into Busan’s past. The village is literally built right into the mountainside with a rabbit-warren of narrow alleys winding through the precipitously placed buildings. As you approach the village, you feel transported back in time, as the modern gives way to the old. Like Maechukji and some of Busan’s other old neighborhoods, Anchang has also become well known for its folk art, with sculptures and multi-hued murals gracing the walls and sides of the old, yet charming, ramshackle houses. The village is accessible via the small local bus that leaves from Beomil-dong Station, Exit 5.

It is easy to spend hours upon hours wandering around the main streets and back alleys of Nampo-dong. Despite the fact that Nampo is home to countless great restaurants, the fare that has garnered the neighborhood the reputation of being a ‘foodie’s paradise’ is the street food. Lines form around some of the more popular food stalls, such as those serving the famed hoeddeok, a sweet fried pancake stuffed with brown sugar and sunflower seeds. Carts proffer a wide array of snacks, including mandu (dumplings) and pajeon (scallion and seafood pancakes). Some of the street stalls, down what some refer to as ‘noodle alley,’ even offer stools to sit on while you snack on chapchae or milmyeon, two popular varieties of cold noodle dishes.

In addition, its fame in the areas of offshore oil drilling rigs, bridges, marine power plants, and steel platforms has firmly established the plant as Korea’s “shipbuilding powerhouse.”

GUKJE & KANGTONG MARKETS NAMPO-DONG | TRADITIONAL SHOPPING

Gukje Market is set in from Busan’s storied harbor in Nampo-dong. “Gukje” means “international” in Korean, and the goods offered up here reflect this. The complex is a maze of side streets and alleys, all packed with vendors hawking steaming street food, clothing, gifts, electronics, hardware, and Korea-themed souvenirs. The market draws a clientele from such far-flung destinations as New York, Toronto, London, Sydney, and Vladivastok. It’s an ideal place to spend an afternoon wandering, snacking on street food, picking up a much-needed jacket or just some gifts for friends and family, all the while soaking in the atmosphere of a proper market in Asia. Kangtong Market (also known as Bupyeong Market) sits just across the street from Gukje and has a purer and more distinct Korean flavor. A host of sights, scents, and sounds spring forth beneath the market’s covered roof, making it a hidden treasure that’s easy to miss amongst the hustle and bustle of its two more famous neighbors (Gukje and Jagalchi). Kangtong is where the locals come to shop for their kimchee, tofu, fresh meat, fruits, vegetables and seafood as well as cooked dishes and traditionally prepared delicacies. This market is always humming and is just enough off the tourist loop to offer up some real surprises, including such culinary treats as handmade noodles (son kalguksu), grilled eel (jang-eo gui), and for adventurous eaters: fried pork intestines (gopjang).

JAGALCHI MARKET NAMPO-DONG | LEGENDARY FISH MARKET

The beating heart of Busan. A place so old that it even has its own dialect, so perfectly captured in its slogan: “Oiso! Boiso! Soiso!” (“Come! See! Buy!”). No trip to Busan is complete without time spent at Jagalchi, where you can literally taste the town’s history on your tongue. Morning is the best time to visit this legendary seafood market—since that’s when many of the fishermen arrive with their fresh catches, though stopping by in the afternoon or evening will never disappoint. A stroll down Jagalchi’s main concourse will open your eyes to the bounty of the sea, splayed out in all of its scaly, finned, and tentacled glory. This is a real, living, breathing seafood market, where customers can walk straight into the middle of the action. Salty merchants—mainly hardy old women—slice fish, shuck oysters, skin eels, haul ice, and corral live octopus with the grace and assuredness of seasoned experts. These tough vendors require tough customers: Bring your haggling skills when purchasing seafood at Jagalchi. It’s also essential to bring a camera and a hearty appetite. The market is a shutterbug’s dream, and anyone who loves seafood will have died and gone to heaven. You can sit down at one of countless stalls right in the midst of the market for an array of choices, or stop into one of two massive raw seafood pavilions where you literally point to your soon-to-be entrees, which are dispatched and served up on the spot. It just doesn’t get any fresher than that.

GUPO & BUJEON MARKETS AROUND BUSAN | EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN

Gupo and Bujeon Markets are the two largest street markets in the city. They buzz seven days a week, teeming with city residents who come to take advantage of their seemingly endless selection of products and, better yet, rock bottom prices. Gupo and Bujeon are the best two places for bargains in the city of Busan. Both markets—while offering up nearly everything under the sun—emphasize food, with a dizzying array of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, dried goods, seafood, and sauces, along with vast amounts of kimchee and other spicy, pungent pickled side dishes. There are also loads of hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving up Korean homestyle fare. Like all Korean markets, Gupo and Bujeon dazzle the visitor with colors and tastes, but it’s the sheer amount of human activity that can really produce a hypnotic effect. These two markets are thriving places of business—literal hubs of commerce—where large sums of money and mass volumes of products change hands daily. If you really want to get a sense of how everyday Busanites go about their business, visit either of these gargantuan complexes. They are both windows into the city’s soul.

SEAFOOD DINE ON THE OCEAN

JOGAE GUI As the largest coastal city in Korea, it’s no wonder that Busan’s food landscape is heavily populated with seafood. Modest yet lively tents serving grilled shellfish abound in the seaside neighborhoods of Cheongsapo, Millak, and Taejeongdae. Some tents specialize in a particular type of shellfish, such as jogae gui (grilled shellfish) or ga-ri-bi (scallops), while many offer a mixed bag, including mussels and shrimp. The simplicity of the accoutrements—usually just butter, diced up onion, and peppers—allows for the briny flavor of the freshly shucked shellfish to take center stage.

HOE Hoe (pronounced hway), which is simply thinly sliced raw fish, is another standout Busan delicacy, which can be found in most of the beach neighborhoods as well as in the famed Jagalchi Seafood Market. Most places that offer hoe allow you to choose a live fish (commonly skate, yellowtail, or mackerel) from the tank and then serve it to you filleted within minutes, served with ssamjang (soybean paste) and lettuce wraps. Yummy.

BUSAN FAVORITES EVENING TREATS

MAKGEOLLI WITH JEON, HONGHAP TANG & DUBU KIMCHI While most restaurants specialize in a particular food, there are several foods that center around drink; particularly makgeolli (chilled, fermented rice wine). Most makgeolli houses, which are often characterized by wooden decor and picnicstyle tables, offer several variations of jeon (pancakes). Hoemul pajeon, which is a hearty scallion pancake with mixed seafood—most commonly octopus, squid, and shrimp—is served with a spicy soy sauce for dipping. Other popular dishes served in makgeolli houses include honghap tang, steamed mussels broth served with spicy red pepper paste and dubu kimchi a simple dish consisting of a warm block of firm, homemade tofu served with heated kimchi, and often sliced pork. STREET FOODS Street food is ever-present in most neighborhoods with heavy foot traffic. The most popular street food establishments are simple open-air storefronts, usually offering dukbokki, which is rice cake in spicy red pepper sauce, twigeum (or tempura in Japan), and gimbap. Gimbap is, without a doubt, Korea’s most popular snack food. Traditionally composed of ham, crab stick, radish, and egg, then wrapped in rice and seaweed, and cut into bite-sized portions. Gimbap is offered in

many varieties, such as tuna salad, chicken, and fried pork cutlet. Bungeoppang, warm, delicious pastries stuffed with sweet red bean paste, are often sold from a freestanding cart and are easy to recognize by the fish shape they are molded into.

SOUPS HEARTY & HEALTHY

DWAEJIGUKBAP Soup is often the centerpiece of the Korean table, and there are several varieties that are considered Busan specialties. Dwaejigukbap is a simple but hearty pork soup with rice. The soup itself is quite mild in flavor, but it’s served with condiments such as ssamjang, onions, and hot peppers so that each patron can season it to his or her taste.

HAEJANGGUK Another dish touted for its healing properties is haejangguk—nicknamed ‘hangover soup.’ The flavorful broth is usually loaded with enoki mushrooms, scallions, sprouts, and often leafy greens. The centerpiece of the dish is pork, from the vertebrae of the pig, so tender that it practically melts on the tongue.

SAMGYETANG Samgyetang, a whole young chicken with ginseng and jujubes in a clear broth, has a mild yet quite distinctive flavor. Despite being a hot soup, Samgyetang is commonly eaten in the summer, as it is said to have healing properties that restore nutrients to the body lost through perspiration.

IT’S THE WHOLE ATMOSPHERE SURROUNDING THE KOREAN DINING EXPERIENCE THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL.

BARBECUE ON THE GRILL

KOREAN BARBECUE Perhaps the Korean cuisine that has had the farthest reach internationally is Korean barbecue. Though most barbecue restaurants offer a variety of cuts of both pork and beef, samgyupsal (pork belly) and galbi (ribs), are probably the two most popular traditional meats. These days, galmaegisal, another pork center cut, has become quite popular, as it is both extremely tender and inexpensive. Whatever kind of meat you opt for, Korean barbecue is as much about the experience as it is about the food. It’s quite gratifying to be able to choose how to adorn each piece of meat, cooked by diners to their own temperature preference. With the large array of condiments and bancheon (side dishes), and wrapping the meat into either thinly sliced radish or lettuce or sesame leaves, it’s possible for each bite to deliver a new and unique flavor combination.

ASIAN DINING FROM OUR NEIGHBORS

CHINESE FOOD Though Chinese cuisine is widespread through Busan, some neighborhoods have a more heavy concentration of Chinese restaurants. Busan’s Chinatown, located in Choryang, just across from Busan Station, probably has the largest section of food from our neighbor to the east. Red lanterns outside the doors make Chinese restaurants, easy to spot around town. Some Chinese dishes that have become popular with Koreans are jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), tangsuyuk (deep fried sweet and sour pork), and jampong (spicy seafood soup). Chinese restaurants are among the few places you can order lamb, pronounced ‘yang-gogi’ in Korean. JAPANESE FOODS A lot of Japanese foods have been adopted into Korean cuisine (and vice versa). A prime example is tonkatsu, or fried pork cutlets, called dongkas in Korean. The most common variations of this crisp, savory dish are to stuff it with mozzarella or smother it in a rich, brown Japanese style curry. Izakayas, which are Japanese ‘tapas,’ or small plate restaurants have become extremely popular in university neighborhoods such as Pusan-Dae and Kyungsung-Dae. Most Izakayas have lively atmospheres and allow customers to order skewers of different meats, vegetables, and meat-wrapped vegetables. As a seafood-loving city, Busan is home to quite a few sushi restaurants. Many of Busan’s sushi restaurants offer more westernized versions of sushi, such as California rolls, while some stick more to the traditional Japanese aesthetic. Restaurants that specialize in raw tuna can be found around the city as well, and many offer all you can eat tuna sashimi for a relatively low fixed price. | FOOD & DRINK

121

INDIAN & THAI The two south Asian cuisines that have begun to make their mark on Busan’s international food landscape the most are Indian and Thai. Busan is home to quite a large number of Pakistani nationals, thus traditional Indian fare can be found around town, most notably in the area surrounding the Sasang bus terminal. Haeundae, Pusan-Dae, Kyungsung-Dae, and Nampo-dong also boast excellent Indian food selections. Though Thai food hasn’t found its way to Busan on as large a scale, several noteworthy Thai restaurants have opened in recent years, and dishes such as pad thai and tom yum have found their way onto menus in fusion restaurants and takeout noodle shops around town.

GLOBAL TASTES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

ITALIAN & MEXICAN Many of the more upscale eateries, especially in the areas framing both Gwangalli and Haeundae beaches, offer a selection of Italian pizzas, pastas, and risotto dishes. With the city’s increasing globalization, the number of chefs who have spent time abroad has grown, establishing a solid array of bona fide Italian cuisine. Many Italian restaurants not only offer delectable brick-oven pizzas and rich pasta sauces, but also a more Western approach to table service. An increase in Mexican restaurants, also likely the product of young Koreans spending time abroad, has been a welcome addition to Busan’s international food spectrum. Several excellent places offering standard Mexican fare—such as burritos, tacos, and chimichangas at reasonable prices—have popped up in the neighborhoods of Seomyeon and Kyungsung-Dae.

BUSAN HAS A LITTLE TASTE OF HOME, NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE FROM.

123

RUSSIAN & TURKISH Though the streets across from Busan Station have been dubbed ‘Chinatown,’ it is also known to locals as ‘Little Russia.’ There is a large concentration of Russian-owned businesses and authentic Eastern European food. This street is, at the moment, the only place in the city to get a bowl of borscht or a plate of perogies. Turkish food has enjoyed a longstanding popularity in Busan, and despite the quick turn around on some of the restaurants, there are always new Turkish restaurants opening. The most surefire way to procure a Turkish meal is to visit one of the kebab stands near the bar scene in the Kyungsung-Dae neighborhood after dark. NORTH AMERICAN & EUROPEAN Of the huge English teaching expatriate community in Busan, many have made a permanent home of Busan. Quite a few of the American-style bars and Irish pubs around town are fully or partially owned by Westerners and offer excellent food. The Kyungsung-Dae neighborhood has the highest concentration of western-style bars, and most menus offer food such as chicken wings, burgers, sandwiches, and deepfried snacks, as well as a wider selection of both international and locally brewed beers than most Korean-style drinking establishments. The Haeundae, Gwangalli, and Seomyeon neighborhoods are also home to a number of Western-style establishments.

SEOMYEON Seomyeon is the meeting point for all three subway lines and serves as a hub for most of the bus lines in Busan. As such, it is a central entertainment district for locals and tourists alike. The Lotte Hotel and Casino acts as the area landmark and overlooks countless shops, restaurants, and bars that are bustling with patrons every night of the week. Korean barbeque, and other traditional fares, are spread throughout the meandering streets of Seomyeon, side-by-side with international chain restaurants like TGIF and Bennigans. Open-air Korean street food carts line the streets for a unique dining experience. The place to be for the 20-something crowd, Seomyeon is a great place for anyone looking to enjoy a night on the town, with no shortage of beer pubs, dance clubs, and noraebongs (singing rooms) to choose from. GWANGALLI Gwangalli is most famous for its impressive evening view of the Diamond Bridge. The bridge’s famous lighting system provides a perfect backdrop for a night out, and patrons have plenty of options to choose from. Gwangalli is famous for its seafood restaurants. The freshest in seafood can be savoured right off of the boat, where crab, sushi, hoe (pronounced hway), and jogae gui restaurants line the shore. You can also find Vietnamese, Italian, and Western restaurants along the waterfront. This unique festival welcomes spring and celebrates the connection to the ocean so deeply felt by Busan citizens. Events take place day and night, primarily at Gwangalli Beach and locations around the Gwangalli area. Festival attendees can participate in traditional maritime practices, such as bare-handed fishing, fish-net dragging, and jindueohwa (torchlight fishing). Other festival highlights include fireworks, lantern-lighting ceremonies, and the area’s glorious avenues of cherry blossoms. Make sure you take the time to visit some of the many raw fish restaurants around the beachfront to truly enjoy the spirit of Eobang.

CHOSUN TONGSINSA FESTIVAL - CELEBRATING NEIGHBORS Tongsinsa, a series of Korean missions that were dispatched to Japan to introduce Korean culture to the neighboring nation during the 17th-19th centuries, have been catching on as a festival theme in Busan. The Tongsinsa Missions, which set sail from Busan, would hold celebratory parades in the streets of Japan upon landing. Those colorful processions are now being reenacted as part of an ongoing effort to foster friendly relations with Korea’s Japanese neighbors. Visitors from Japan take part in the festival as well, and the parades feature a variety of traditional Japanese and Korean performances, cuisines, and displays. It all culminates in the Joseon Tongsinsa Parade—a lively and colorful procession that symbolizes friendship between the Korean and Japanese nations.

SUMMER FESTIVALS AROUND BUSAN | SANDS OF SUMMER

HAEUNDAE SAND FESTIVAL - ART IN THE SAND Inspired by the white sands of Korea’s most famous beach, the Haeundae Sand Festival takes place annually during early June. First held in 2005, the main drawcard of the festival is the World Sand Sculpture Exhibition. Spectacular sand sculptures are created by local and international artists to amaze and entertain festival goers from Busan and around the country. Visitors are encouraged to experience the festival in three ways—”See the sand, feel the sand, and enjoy the sand.” Festival events include a marathon, an airshow, fireworks, traditional Korean wrestling, and a vibrant street parade. A unique festival highlight is the hot sand bath, where visitors are buried in the sand to receive health and beauty benefits from the sand’s minerals.

THE BUSAN SEA FESTIVAL - HONOR THE OCEAN Held throughout the city at locations including Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli Beach, Songdo Beach, and Songjeong Beach, as well at several non-beach venues, the Busan Sea Festival is Korea’s largest sea festival. As many as 30 affiliated festivals are held in conjunction with the event, making it a vibrant time of year in Busan, during which visitors have plenty of activities to choose from. While held all over the city, The Busan Sea Festival’s main venue is Haeundae Beach, where performing arts and a variety of water sports programs take center stage. All participating beaches offer windsurfing, beach volleyball, and pinswimming tournaments. The array of marine leisure activities makes the Busan Sea Festival fun for people of all ages. Visitors can also take advantage of free lessons in ocean rafting, canoeing, kayaking, or scuba diving, and free banana boat rides are also available.

AUTUMN FESTIVALS

AROUND BUSAN | NATURE’S COLORS

BUSAN FIREWORKS FESTIVAL - LIGHT UP THE SKY The annual Busan Fireworks Festival has become one of the most eagerly anticipated celebrations in Korea. The festival, which centers around the beautiful Diamond Bridge in Gwangalli, first started in 2005 during the APEC Conference as a show of honor for the 21 visiting heads of state. The event was so well received by the general public that it has become a yearly fixture on the Busan festival calendar, drawing more than 1 million annual spectators. Each year, festival organizers face the increasingly challenging task of improving on the previous year’s display—a task they seem to relish. This drive to continually improve the festival’s magnificence has lead to a blending of fireworks with other technologies to create an audio/visual symphony of sound, lasers, video technology, and explosions of light unmatched anywhere in the Asia.

THE FIREWORK FESTIVAL IS ONE OF THE BUSAN’S MOST POPULAR. | FESTIVALS & EVENTS

BUSAN BIENNALE - THE ARTS COME ALIVE Originally formed as a voluntary culture event, The Busan Biennale is an arts festival that integrates three festivals in one: the Busan Youth Biennale, the Busan Sea Arts Festival, and the Busan Outdoor Sculpture Symposium. The main purpose of the Biennale is to make contemporary art more accessible to the general public by providing simple interpretations of artworks. Modern art isn’t always easy to understand, so this festival aims to create a forum for open communication and collaboration between artists and art enthusiasts from Korea and around the world. The Busan Biennale happens every other year in even numbered years. Each time, a different theme is chosen. The festival takes place at numerous indoor and outdoor galleries and locations around the city and usually lasts for about 60 days from late September to late November.

WINTER FESTIVALS AROUND BUSAN | GET IN THE SPIRIT

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL - HOLIDAY CHEER If you would like to get a taste of the look, the feel, and the spirit of Christmas in Korea, there is no better place than the Busan Christmas Tree Festival. Each holiday season, the Jung-du Gwangbok neighborhood of Busan’s Jung-gu district comes alive with a spectacular display of lights and ornaments and the joy of Christmas revelers out on the town for a hearty dose of holiday cheer. The centerpiece of the festive street display is a 20-meter Christmas tree erected in the center of the three-way intersection at the heart of the Gwangbok-ro neighborhood. From there, brightly-lit streets decorated with trees shining with lights and ornaments span throughout the area, allowing visitors to bask in the season’s glow as they walk the winter streets of Busan.

POLAR BEAR SWIM - A DEEP CHILL The Polar Bear Swim Festival was held for the first time in 1988 to celebrate the Seoul Olympics. After starting with only 100 participants taking the polar bear dip, the swim has since grown into one of Korea’s most popular outdoor winter events. The yearly swim, which occupies the top spot on BBC’s “Top 10 Unusual Winter Sports” list, draws well over 3,000 participants every year. After a morning of beachfront activities, participants take the brave plunge into the icy-cold waters off Haeundae Beach.
