We found out that your project is based on the famous Japanese anime EVA, why did you drive the design in this way? To be honest, this approach came to me when I was reading the brief.My mentor, Tom Rivard, mentioned in the brief that the modernist strategy of solving architectural and urban problems has now become the origin of the problem. It will be problematic to design a future project based on existing strategy. Because the context we face is unprecedented. Science fiction is a kind of perspective design, which aims to build a platform to approach future. Its setting is based on reality, but at the same time it overcomes the limitation of real life.Therefore,it will open our minds and create the future with logic and creativity.

02. Why did you choose Evangelion as the subject of your research? Evangelion has the distinctive characteristics of the 90s, with contemporaries such as Gundam and Akira. This generation grew up in the shadow of the post-war era and witnessed the boom and crash of the bubble economy. All these experiences are reflected in the setting and plot of EVA. This design method of conceiving the future based on reality is precisely applicable to the design of the second stage At the same time, after 26 years of updates, compared to other manga, the city system of EVA's city system is more informative and believable compared to many overhead works. It also influence other works in the next 20 years.

At the same time, EVA underground existence of an underground city geo-front, this special space has also aroused my interest.Based on these two points, I chose EVA's Neo-Tokyo 3 as the starting point of the project.

So it came to my mind that public bathhouse and church can provide an equal communication platform for the community. The activities in these spaces can be the starting point to establish distributed political smart grid. The connection between space and energy and governance were revealed. This process reminds me of the second-order of cybernetices, the emergence happens when different systems interacting with each other. Once two seemingly unrelated things are interconnected in some way, new ideas can emerge.

What is the purpose of future making projects for architecture students in your opinion? Is it necessary to establish a future-oriented design approach since there are few architectural firms in the market that envision the future?

Since the preliminary research is EVA, why do you want to design Parthenon Inn?Isn't it more in line with the plot setting should be a military base or energy fortress? At the beginning of Design Stage 2, everyone followed Tom to Glebe, but Anna (my A1 teammate) and I went to another studio for a cruise tour, so Tom asked me to design the ocean bathhouse and spiritual cleansing sanctuary. I was so baffled, I really regretted not visit the site with everyone else.Later I asked them why they let me to design the bathhouse, Tom said you try and know. So I did it. After reading the information of bathhouse and ocean bath, I felt that I underestimated the value of bathhouse in western society. A documentary about sauna in Finland mentioned that sauna is an activity that makes all people equal.
Through the construction of context, we re-thinking people's behavior in a different perspective, and re-examine the certain architecture typology defined by different functions. In the process of reconfiguration, people's behavior is no longer taken for granted and building typology are no longer reliable. All the tools we relied on before is not work, which in turn brings us closer to the essence of architectural design. During my gap year after my undergraduate degree, I was introduced to curatorial design. My boss at that time looked at my portfolio and gave me the comment that it was very formal but boring. Although I wanted to argue against it, it seemed that he was right. However, school projects are always practical, and this project was a golden opportunity for me to prove myself. On the other hand, 30 years ago, architects worked basically by hand drawing and manual models. So it's not a bad thing to know the future.
