THE RENAISSANCE OF MEGASTRUCTURE

Renovation of People’s Park Complex,Singapore UWA Singapore Summer Studio ARCT 3001-Architecture Studio 4 Instructor: Simon Anderson 2019 Summer(Jan---Mar) Individual Work

The People’s Park Complex was a commercial housing project undertaken by Urban Renewal Department of singapore government in 1967.The 31-storey People’s park complex, symbolizing the localization of Brutalism in Singapore, set the pattern for later retail developments in Singapore, during the 1960s and 1970s. Currently, the building fell into disrepair and face the reality of being demolished and reconstructed. Our project is aimed to revitalize this area by constructing the communication between the new mega-complex and the historical and social context of the site. Meanwhile, it should meet the clients requirement as listed below.

SITE ANALYSIZE & CONCEPT My strategy for establishing the connection between the building and site context is to break the boundry of three area. The design should reflect the characters of each area and infusion them in a harmony and sustainable way. The following picture shows the essence of this project, that is , mega-structure shoud be responsible to the city.

GROUND FLOOR

In order to respond to the context of China town, this project study the traditional shophouse and invent two basic commercial unit. Also, a new circulation system is designed to establish the connection between the street and this building. A hawer center is designed on the third floor in order to reflect the life style of Singaporean.

RETAIL-PART TWO (FOURTH FLOOR---SEVENTH FLOOR) FUNCTION ANALYSIS

The Buildings in this area distributed separately. It has lower population density. The elderly and child take up a higher proportion in this area. The high green coverage promote the quality of life.

The aggravating trend of aging population brings huge impact on Singapore society. It is important to make it possible to give elderly to interact with other generations. The diagrams analysis behavior of three generations. Based on the diagram, this part of design create a chance for different generation to see and meet each other.

Area B: Business District Skyscraper distributes narrawly in this area.Density and the mobility of the population is high. The street is wide and transportation is convenient.

Area C: China Town Small size building clusterd along the narrow street. It has the highest density among the three areas.Immigrates takes a large proportion.

CIVIC-LIBRARY (EIGHTH FLOOR---TENTH FLOOR) During our study tour in Singapore,we realize it is really hard to find a nice place to study around our site. Library is too crowed to find an available seats. However, Students and freelance accounts for a considerable proportion in our area.As a result, a new library is designed in our project. Library plays a important role for the whole city. One of the aim in our design is to let perdestrian be able to see a libaray hangning in the sky.Library need its believer.Another focus of this design is to create public space for people to communicate with each other and express their own idea.

People spend most of their time in office, which means the office is not only a space for working; it is also the space for conversation, leisure, and even meditating. The design should focus on different behaviors and arrange them together in a harmony way. PUBLIC HOUSING (EIGHTEENTH FLOOR---FIFTY-FIFTH FLOOR) In Singapore, more than 80% of people live in public housing managed by the government. With the rapid development of economy, the government attempt to produce the up-market housing and explore the future of affordable public housing project.WOHA’s projects are widely acclaimed in the field of sustainable public housing design. Inspired by their works, this project attempt to design the residential part with their concept of community, variety, and sustainability.

The void in the public garden provides the space for verticle ventilation, which improves the life quality for the residents. -The public garden on each five-floor creates a stair-like pattern in the section. When you stand on the top floor, it makes you feel like standing on the top of the forest. This idea is inspired by the Kampung project of WOHA. -Every five-floor has a large courtyard for community activity. It also reconnects the residents in the sky with a sense of Groundedness.

GROUNDLESS CITY

2040 Scenario - Umekita Station, Osaka UWA ARCT 3000 Architecture Studio 3 Instructor: Sophie Giles 2019 Summer (Mar---Jun) Individual Work

Now we are granted as the designer of 2040 urban landmark. What should you do? Follow the canon and the norms to complete this project as usual? ‘NO.’ Don’t be silly! Design, especially, architectural design, is not working as the solution to the city. People don’t care about it. They are trapped in their daily routine and ignore the street, the block, and the landscape. The client doesn’t care about it. They only care about the economic efficiency of your project. What you should do is to offer them a meaningless form. You will have a comfortable life, and nobody is going to blame you. ‘ I can’t deny it. IT IS A PART OF REALITY. BUT ONLY A PART OF. Architecture influence people in an inconspicuous way. People were walking through the building, the city, the landscape hundred, and thousands of time. They probably too tired to notice the difference around them in a few days. However, as long as the repetition is continuous, they will get respond to the surroundings, even without noticing them. Architecture is powerful in a subconscious way. It is way too abstract.’ Prove me then. ‘OK, here is my answer, my manifesto. It is not perfect. But, forgive me, this is my devotion to architecture.’

STAGE ONE: SITE ANALYSIS

SITE PLAN

MULTI-LAYER CIRCULATION

During the jury of Singapore project, Richard, the architect who founded WOHA, told me that, as the designer of the megastructure, you have to be responsible to the city. The project should respect the site. According to the preliminary investigation, I found that there is a railway on the western side of the site. It acts as a barrier and blocks the circulation in this area. Sure enough, this part is the more impoverished area. What I want to do is to reconnect them through the multi-layer pathway design.

STAGE TWO: MAIN TOWER DESIGN

SITE SECTION:

In consideration of the environment issue, light structure and material are more and more popular than the grid traditional concrete blocks. But how to design a light structure for the building? The inspiration is from traditional Japanese origami.

STRUCTURE DESIGN-STAGE ONE

BASE DESIGN: The inhuman impression of skyscraper always come from its scary volume. To make it more human-friendly, we can learn from the mountain. The design of the central dome based on the terrain of the site, which is quite similar to the mountain. However, form manipulation can`t change the walking experience. The difference between climbing the mountain and entering the skyscraper is the accessibility. The helix and the cave is designed as behavior activator to create a juicy experience.

STRUCTURE DESIGN-STAGE TWO NO.11 is chosen as the essential elements of the structure design. At this stage, the archetype is developed into a stable load-bearing system for the tower. Skyscraper-Tower

STAGE THREE: CO-LAB DESIGN

VISUALIZATION

To increase the flexibility of the co-lab space. I choose the column structure and build a few solid wall baes on solar and wind analysis. People study and work in this space. In this mix-used space, you can rent them for different purposes. This space also increases creativity and improve communication. You probably meet next Jobs in these blocks in the future.

1:500 Roof Plan---Co-Lab design Relationship between contour and block orientation

It is almost impossible to look into the future without the reflection of our current situation. For me, the Reid Library in my university offers me a different experience. It is ok to eat and drink on the ground floor. The first floor is suitable for group study. If you want to study quietly, the third floor is perfect for you. The design of the library is based on different kinds of behaviors. This project applies the humanitarian approach of design. The concept of humanitarian design is expressed through the Co-lab space. Eight boxes are designed for different types of moods and behaviors individually. 11

STAGE FOUR: PENCIL TOWER DESIGN Before stepping into the design process, it is the time for us to think about the hidden logic behind the current design. In the plant scheme, the sense of time(the variation of seasons) for the site. The complexity and height of the central tower give us a shining impression. For me, the tower can be compared to the sun. Follow this logic, the scattered allocation of co-lab express the character of the star. So this time, to complete this narrative, I will design the pencil tower with the concept of the moon. The study from the Katsura Palace, the orientation of pencil tower refers to the Azimuth of moonrize. What’s more, a platform linked with the base is designed for watching the moon. To considerate the function as a hostel and the limitation of the volume, I decided to set divide the function into apart and each floor have a different service. Every five-floor can be considered as an independent element of the hostel. Stairs are arranged around the exterior of the tower so that the guest doesn’t have to worry about the privacy issue.

STAGE FIVE: FUTURE RETAIL DESIGN FUSION OF FUNCTION

CONCEPT DRAWING RETAIL

RATIO ILLUSTRATION RETAIL---AI CHURCH

RETAIL---COFFEE SHOP & CLOTHES STORE Why do you want to go out of your cozy nest for shopping if everything is available online? I have two answers. The first one is communication. Shopping with your friend is far more critical than shopping itself. It is an essential way to maintain the friendship as well. So my first strategy for future retail is to combine communication and shopping. The coffee bar connects with clothes shop quite naturally and thus, create a refreshing shopping experience. The second one is mental enjoyment. This particular kind of store sells indulgence and pious to people. In the church kind of electronic device store, you have to act like the pilgrim to appreciate the aesthetics of their product. This is not a fantasy. It is obviously to find that the spacial connection between apple store and famous churches. In the Micro-Bar, people tend to lay on the big sponge to relax and get calmness rather than get drank and hate themselves. This kind of indulgence is probably good for the society suffered from ‘Karoshi.’ By the way, this retail symbolizes ‘human’ in this design of the universe.

DEEP DEEPHOUSE HOUSEIIII

Small Affordable Residential Design, Perth UWA ARCT 2298 Architecture Studio 2 Instructor: Sean Gorman 2018 Winter(Aug---Nov) Individual Work

Perth, a city located in south-western Australia, receives a mild Mediterranean climate. However, it is boiling and dry in summer, which demands the control of sunlight in the hot seasons. The core of this project is the shading device. Designed with wood panels, the shading device provides shelter from the harsh sunlight without compromising ventilation. It also creates an intimate atmosphere by using local materials, such as plywood and acacia wood panels. This project is for a multi-generation aboriginal family. There are five members in this family, a couple, grandma and two children. Granny’s bedroom and the master bedroom have direct sunlight in winter, which is very good for health. Granny’s bedroom is next to the teenager’s bedroom. If an emergency happens, the grandma can get help from the children. In aboriginal culture, a year is divided into six seasons. A plant scheme, consisting of 7 local plants, allows the clients to enjoy the blooming flower all over the year.
