There was a time when pundits came up with dooms day scenario about the imminent death of printed books. When e readers were first introduced to the market a sense of excitement took hold of tech enthusiasts and they all started the count down for the day that books were to be displayed only in confinement of museums and libraries. Well, it didn’t happen. Book publishing is still strong as ever and recent pandemic gave it a boost as well. Last year Amazon sold more than 33 million titles all over the world. In our region where printed word was born books are becoming more popular as well. In this issue we have introduced a series of best seller books by Arab writers. Another prediction that didn’t come true was the paperless office. Now we can confidently lay that myth to rest. Although the advent of digital technology and now the Coronavirus crisis drove a huge portion of population to do their shopping online and work from home but paper consumption is on the rise. Meanwhile the pandemic has caused dramatic shifts in operating patterns within the paper industry, which have resulted in fluctuations in pulp and paper supply and demand, and recurring price increases. Many paper manufacturers have already announced price increase. Sappi Europe announces a price increase for all its packaging and specialty paper grades by 7 – 11% valid for deliveries from 1 April 2021. Sharply rising input costs, particularly relevant to pulp and energy in combination with very high freight rates due to global logistic constraints make price increases unavoidable. To cut a long story short the printed word and its carrier which is paper will stay with us for a long time. That is a prediction you can count on.

GPP Hosts Second Virtual Industry Round Table

ME‌Printer April - May 2021

The panel agreed that the pandemic had resulted in significant positive changes to the printing industry

12

Tarsus Group, the organizer of Gulf Print & Pack 2021, recently hosted the second of its virtual round table discussions with top representatives from the commercial and wide-format printing industry in the Middle East. Aimed at keeping the region’s industry connected in the months leading up to the December show, this second session, “Smart use of digital print technologies in the MEA region”, took place on Wednesday 24 February. Topics discussed included: how individual large-format printing businesses had been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; exploring if digital printers / print service providers in MEA have identified new markets during this time; digital printing and textiles; regional trends in selecting / buying machinery; hybrid printing; digital package printing; automation; and demographic trends. Four expert panelists from the region took part in the lively discussion: Ayman Aly, senior marketing manager, Canon Middle East; Halim El-Khoury, business manager, large format printing, UAE & KSA, HP; Philippe Hosni, general manager, Helliozid Océ Emirates; and Shihab Zubair, regional sales manager, Epson Europe. While Akanksha Meena, editor, Labels and Labeling Middle East and North Africa / Brand Print / Gulf Print & Pack, chaired the session. Overall, the panel agreed that the pandemic had resulted in significant positive changes to the printing industry, creating opportunities to adapt and be flexible. It had also encouraged customers and suppliers alike to rethink short-term over long-term priorities and ways of working. A number of key factors that had helped printing remain resilient in recent months were credited with the current high level of trust in the industry. This included a number of market segments which have

performed particularly well and proved popular with customers; digital signage, Covid applications such as in-office safety signage, vinyl printing, and entry-level consumer printing. Short-run personalised label printing was also noted as a major growth area, with an increasing move from conventional to digital printing, while hybrid too was seen as an area with potential, given its space-saving benefits. The panel also agreed that service support and maintenance is being done increasingly via software and online, while the lack of face-toface contact with customers and working from home have driven automation technology. Digital label and package printing – corrugated in particular – was likewise regarded as one of the most positively impacted applications, driven by the growth in e-commerce following the temporary closure of shopping malls and changing consumer habits. The panel agreed that most vendors would be looking at this as a major growth area as reversing these trends will be difficult. At the same time, the impact on the retail industry had also created opportunity, with significant effort being put into signage campaigns and in-store promotion, to entice customers back into shops. Andy Thomas-Emans, strategic director, Labelexpo / Gulf Print & Pack, said of the session: “We are delighted to see our virtual

round table discussions gathering momentum, with a successful second open discussion with the commercial and wideformat printing industry in the MEA region. It’s incredibly encouraging to hear that smart digital technologies continue to flourish, since these will be vitally important as we move into the post-Covid recovery phase.” Echoing this, Ayman Ali said: “Today, we are witnessing a shift from traditional Offsets to digital printing, and this is mainly due to growing customer demands when it comes to faster turnaround times and shorter runs. As we see increasing demand, this segment is poised to create new growth opportunities in 2021 and beyond. This discussion was an opportunity for us to discuss this growth and further examine regional markets trends, as well as outlook and technology opportunities. At Canon Middle East, we continue to leverage cutting-edge digital print tools in line with customer needs.” Thomas-Emans added: “I’d like to thank our panelists for taking part and we look forward to running the next Gulf Print & Pack hosted discussion in the coming weeks. It’s vitally important that the industry continues to engage and exchange ideas openly while we cannot meet face to face, so any supplier or printer keen to take part in future round table sessions is encouraged to get in touch with us.

Digital Labels in Jordan Opts for BOBST One of the largest label printing companies in the Middle East, Digital Labels has installed the first BOBST NOVA SX 550 solventless laminator in the region to speed up production and offer a sustainable, cost-effective solution to its customers. The machine was put into operation via remote support from Bobst Italia to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. Amman-based Digital Labels is a specialist in self-adhesive, in-mould, and wraparound labels, and shrink sleeves. First established in 2004, the company has expanded operations significantly over the past few years as it has identified new and profitable market sectors. This includes diversifying into flexible packaging to deliver pouches, flow wrap, liners and bags to customers in the food, drinks and automotive markets in the Middle East and North Africa.

Agile and cost-effective production The new modular and compact BOBST NOVA SX 550 laminator offers agile production, with faster set-ups and changeovers to help Digital Labels respond to demands for short runs and quick turnaround with less waste. It handles a wide range of substrates including paper, alu-foil, metallized films and thin stretchable materials, with production speeds reaching up to 450 m/min. Tool-less changeovers of transfer rolls are performed within minutes irrespective of whether solid rolls or sleeves types are used. A complete job changeover is very fast, taking less than 15 minutes. The flexibility of the laminator enables high-quality production at low cost. Along with an intuitive HMI, it comes with a patented onetouch automated washing system that requires less cleaning solution compared to similar machines and features an adjustable cleaning cycle of five minutes or less. Automatic reel-centering technology saves on set-up time and waste, and rollers are compatible with other manufacturers’ systems. The unique three-column design, which offers easy access to all parts of the machine, is also contributing to the high uptime, and the data

collection and connectivity features allow Digital Labels full control of the process and access to BOBST remote services. “When I first saw the NOVA SX 550 laminator in the BOBST showroom, I knew that it was exactly what we needed. It is very operator friendly and so easy to use, and it is equipped with all the necessary technologies for fast changeover, like fast fully automatic washing system,” said Mr Sabha. Remote installation With tight restrictions on travel and access caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Digital Labels’ own team of engineers had to manage the installation themselves, and they did a great job, with a little remote guidance from Bobst Italia. Due to the true plug-andplay nature of the NOVA SX 550 laminator, which needs no special foundations and is simply lifted into place, the installation was a complete success. Within just two days of delivery, Digital Labels was up and running, producing quality laminated structures for customers – a true testament to the intuitive design and ease of use of this BOBST machine. Mr Sabha commented, “We didn’t have any issues with the new laminator and our products are produced according to the standards.” Reflecting on the whole process, he said, “We were actually quite surprised by the simplicity of the

Responding to green demands Environmental concerns have increased the demand for solventless lamination as customers look to label and packaging producers to introduce more sustainable manufacturing methods for flexible packaging. To meet these requirements, Digital Labels has chosen to invest in the NOVA SX 550 laminator, an innovative new machine introduced by BOBST in early 2020. “Maximizing sustainability in the process is very important to us,” said Mohammad Sabha, Plant Manager and Executive Engineer. “We launched our own Let’s Go Green campaign back in 2016 to optimise production in the most environmentally friendly way possible, and we are continually looking for ways to improve our green credentials. The NOVA SX 550 solventless laminator fits perfectly with that ethos.” As a member of the non-profit organisation SEDEX, Digital Labels has also undertaken and passed the extended SMETA 4-pillar audit, which assesses the Environment and Business Ethics of a company in addition to Labor Standards and Health & Safety. The world’s leading social audit certifies that

that the company is working in an ethical manner and complying with international standards and good practice.

machine. Although the COVID-19 procedures didn’t allow BOBST technicians to visit Jordan for the installation, our engineering team was able to install it with online support from Italy.” He added, “Our operators are also very satisfied with the machine and learned to run it in a very short time.” Relying on partnership A long-term partnership with BOBST has seen Digital Labels install five BOBST flexo presses and a laminator over the years, before this latest acquisition. Always at the forefront of development, the company was the first printer in the Middle East to implement 7-color Extended Color Gamut (ECG) printing through the investment in a BOBST flexo press

with REVO DigiFlexo technology. Other installations include a further three inline flexo presses, a CI flexo press and a compact multitechnology laminator for flexible packaging from BOBST. “Quite simply, we put our trust in BOBST’s machinery, because we know that we are buying the highest standard, best quality and the latest technology. Added to that, we can also rely on getting the best in after-sales support so that we can minimise downtime and keep our promise to our customers of delivering high-quality solutions on time, every time,” said Mr Sabha. “We needed to expand our solventless production with a simple machine to handle short runs with short changeover times and the BOBST NOVA SX 550 meets those

criteria perfectly. I believe that this machine has a place in every flexible packaging printing house and I’m 100% confident of its productivity. I highly recommend it.” “With the new NOVA SX 550 solventless laminator in house, Digital Labels is leading the industry by offering sustainable, costeffective and flexible production to customers looking to improve their green credentials and to meet the end users’ quest for environmentally friendly products,” said Nanni Bertorelli, Product Line Manager Coating & Laminating, Bobst Italia. “AT BOBST, we are committed to working with our partners to implement solutions that continue to improve their processes and help them grow productivity in a sustainable way.”

The number of expats in the United Arab Emirates is also growing, which is expected to positively impact the packaging market growth in various sectors. • The UAE is one of the largest personal care markets in the Middle East due to its large population. It is becoming the local hub for the beauty and skincare industry. Moreover, the rise of beauty trends is heightened by social media exposure that encourages word of mouth and works as a useful marketing tool. According to Messe Frankfurt, in 2020, the sales value for the UAE’s beauty industry is expected to be

worth USD 2.7 billion. • Thus, the personal care companies are investing in their packaging, vastly the packaging of their products, which always acts as a primary factor to gain attention. For instance, in September 2019, the luxury e-commerce brand Ounass launched eco-friendly boxes to demonstrate its initiatives towards sustainability. Such initiatives highlight the inherent rise in demand for the market studied. • Moreover, multiple factors are influencing the trend of fast-food

culture, which, in turn, is driving the market for food packaging. For instance, better cold chain infrastructure boosts consumer preference for frozen processed halal meat and poultry, cold drinks, and flavored milk across the country, which is tipped to drive industry growth to 2030. • The Organic Trade Association estimates for 2020, that the forecasted value of organic packaged food and beverage consumption in the United Arab Emirates was over USD 51.2 million as against USD 27.3 million in 2014.

As the packaging protects the contents from being crushed or squeezed or contaminated, the market being studied is presumed to grow due to increased packaged food and beverage consumption. • Moreover, the standardization of the ‘Made in UAE’ initiative, which introduces the local manufacturers to the global market, is helping the country to reduce its reliance on imports and to strengthen its export potential. The positive growth of this kind in the manufacturing sector has encouraged considerable investments in the packaging industry. Most of the investments in the packaging sector are made toward adjusting their packaging practices to the country’s current economic situation and evolving standards. • However, the region’s unstable economy and decreasing oil prices may hinder the growth of the market. Further, due to COVID-19, Emiratis are cutting back on their spending in all categories, except household essentials. This is expected to increase the use of plastic packaging, especially in UAE food industry. The United Arab Emirates is also dependent on the import of raw materials for corrugated board from countries such as India, where the pandemic caused the closure of paper mills due to lockdown and social distancing norms, leading to a shortage of raw materials.

oil, canned beans, carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, chicken franks, and reconstituted juices, are generally exported in rigid containers, which are in high demand from the country’s food processing sector • In most cases, these products are targeted for exports to the EU market. Hence, to meet stringent packaging regulations imposed by the EU, the local food processors and contract packaging companies have a high preference for rigid packaging solutions for such exports. • Additionally, some locally produced foods are of very high quality at competitive prices. Over the forecast period, as the number of food processing companies is expected to increase, locally produced products are likely to compete with imports of consumer-ready foods, creating considerable demand for price in competitive packaging from the local food manufacturers. • Further, the growing internet retailing and omnichannel vendors in the region are further expected to boost the production of food and beverage in the country. According to the recent statistics from the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, internet retailing in the country is growing rapidly. In 2018, the sector witnessed growth by 19%, reaching AED 360 million, representing a CAGR of 65% from 2013 to 2018. • The increasing demand from packaged food in the country is augmenting the demand for corrugated board packaging in the studied segment. Scope of the Report Packaging refers to the process of designing, evaluating, and producing packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use. In many countries, it is fully integrated into government, business, institutional, industrial, and personal use.

among populations, demand for sustainable packaging solutions, demand for convenient packaging (offset by new restrictions on single-use in some countries), growing e-commerce market, and rise in need for electronic goods and home and personal care products, along with economic development and increasing per capita income. In the December 2018 Paper Arabia trade show, 25% of visitors were interested in the corrugated packaging segment, which was the highest among all the segments. • Furthermore, the rising penetration of the e-commerce sector in the country is paving the way for corrugated packaging. According to Visa, e-commerce transactions in the United Arab Emirates accounted for USD 16 billion in 2019. Also, the United Arab Emirates represents the biggest annual spending per online shopper at USD 1,648 in the MENA region. • The use of mini-flute corrugated boxes in some end-user segment enabled corrugated boxes to expand their presence, such as cereal boxes and carryout food packaging. An additional factor that allows corrugated boxes to gain share from paperboard cartons is the introduction of e-commerce-ready packaging that substitutes lightweight and easy-to-open cartons for boxes that can withstand the rigors of shipping. • Moreover, the United Arab Emirates is also a net exporter of paper and paperboard, majorly to the countries in South Africa and other GCC countries. The paperboard packaging solutions include cartons, leaflets, tubes, corrugated cases, and rigid boxes. Paperboards that are used for fiberboard boxes are the primary means of secondary packaging in most of the end-user industries.

Canada, the retail sales value of fortified and functional packaged food in the United Arab Emirates is expected to account for USD 443.5 million in 2020, from USD 199.4 million in 2011. • Moreover, the e-commerce sector also enables cross-border retailing of products that are expected to improve the demand for secondary packaging from the food and beverage industry over the forecast period.

The UAE packaging market has a wide portfolio of suppliers from the local and international market

Competitive Landscape The UAE packaging market has a wide portfolio of suppliers from the local and international market. This factor leads to high competition among the vendors. In many cases, due to the absence of multiple distribution channels, the vendors directly interact with the end-users to sell their products. This scenario leads to long-term deals with endusers. Hence, the vendors often choose to retain their clients or make new clients by competitive pricing strategies. Additionally, as most of the packaging material is sourced from imports, there is a high competition among the suppliers to capture a limited number of players in the market. This factor is intensifying the competitive rivalry among the local and foreign manufacturers. Some of the key players in the market include Gulfeast Paper & Plastic Industries LLC, Arabian

Modular 3D-Printed Majlis House is a Marvel The 3D-printed Majlis House made from smooth 3D-printed concrete walls in Abu Dhabi is an architectural triumph. The Majlis House is conceptualized and designed by MEAN (Middle East Architecture Network). Conceived as modular house, the Emirati Majlis has been proposed as a place of gathering and socializing in response to today’s question on “how can we reimagine a house in light of today’s lifestyle and technology? ” The Majlis House is proposed as “a predominant spatial typology” in Gulf residences. Aimed at building typically as an annex to the house, it is a space of social gathering and interaction typically used to receive guests and is designed to be detached from the private quarters of the family in Emirati homes. The house is made of the using of concrete 3D printing technologies. Proposing new modular strategies, the house can be envisioned in-line with the challenges and potentials of these technologies to allow for faster, more spatially fluid inhabitations at an ecological and affordable rate. MEAN* reimagines the spatial qualities of this typology with 3 options for the space depending on the requirements and lifestyle of its inhabitants: Capsule Pod, Fluid Space and Folded Walls. Capsule Pod As MEAN* explains, for this option, the team designed a method of construction that relies on hoistin-place precast methods for constructing concrete parts. “The parts are 3D Printed concrete flat on the ground on-site and lifted to place to be assembled to make up

the cylindrical volume of the space,” said the architects. “The concrete ‘rings’ have spaces in between to allow natural light to come in from 3 sides. The space inside is composed of these structural members, which allow for a vast and column-free interior.” Fluid Space The second key design principle is to provide a fluid space. For this option, the architects use the advantages of concrete 3D printing methods bring forth. The spatial enclosure is organic and unique, with practical interior gestures such as the recessed seating area and the roof skylight,” the team added. “The space is 3D printed in 2 parts: 1 part for the enclosing walls which serve as a shell structure containing all the programmatic functions needed by the majlis annex, and the other part to construct the roof, which is a radical use of 3D Printing technology.” Folded Walls The third principle is to explore the idea of walls folding into each other to compose the space. Each wall is made of 3D printed in concrete onsite in a trapezoidal shape to allow more floor area while achieving a dynamic exterior form. “The main wall is printed in a typical smooth finish, while the second wall is printed with undulations to create a textured design feature that celebrates the construction technology,” MEAN* continued. “The walls meet at gaps that are glazed to allow natural light into the space and to provide space the doors.”

Each annex is fitted with a foyer, a washroom, a small kitchenette, and living areas. With each option, the possibility of having the annex attached or detached from the house has also been examined. Careful consideration had been given to the architectural language of each option to fit into the social lifestyle of contemporary Emiratis as well as the local architecture of the UAE. According to the architects, “the three options of the 3D Printed Majlis propose the use of 3D printing for the construction of a novel annex to the contemporary home.” As a design exercise, the team at MEAN* explored pushing the boundaries of 3D printing in concrete, while envisioning new spatial narratives for the typology of the Majlis. MEAN (Middle East Architecture Network), founded by architect, entrepreneur and researcher Riyad Joucka, is an innovative architecture practice that works at the nexus of design and emergent technologies. MEAN utilizes cutting edge computational design processes and digital fabrication tools to leverage the quality of architectural solutions. Computer Programming, Robotics, 3D Printing, AR, VR, and CNC manufacturing are some of the technologies we use to leverage our work. MEAN previously designed a retreat with sculptural limestone façade in Jebel Jais, the highest peak of the United Arab Emirates.

Heidelberg Increases Capacity in China

ME‌Printer April - May 2021

Heidelberg is now exporting machinery from its site in Shanghai to more than 40 countries

20

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for printing systems, particularly in the Asian core markets, is nearing pre-crisis levels again. The same applies to the production volumes of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) at its site in Shanghai. Accordingly, the company has also progressively increased exports of its printing presses manufactured in China. Since being established in 2005, launching the assembly of postpress systems, and subsequently taking up the production of standard smallformat printing presses for the Chinese market, the site now employs some 450 staff and manufactures printing presses for commercial and packaging printing across all standard format classes. Production operations are centered on the 70 × 100 format class, specifically the Speedmaster CD 102 and Speedmaster CS 92 models. Customers in more than 40 countries trust Heidelberg quality from China The company is now exporting machinery from its site in Shanghai to more than 40 countries. The main customers besides China are other Asian markets such as Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and the Philippines. However, the number of Chinese-manufactured machines being exported to Europe – predominantly standard printing presses – is also increasing. For example, Chinesemade presses have been installed in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and France. In south and central America, countries such as Mexico and Brazil have been placing orders. As a result, the export rate from China is currently at 19 percent and rising. “Our production at the Chinese site in Shanghai is a success story, not just in terms of the Chinese market, but also and increasingly with regard to the rest of the world,” states Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. “Already, around one third of all the Heidelberg printing units being manufactured are coming from this plant. Following the rapid

economic recovery of the Asian markets from the coronavirus pandemic, our local production operations have proven to be a strategic advantage in overcoming the crisis. As a consequence, we are increasingly able to realize growth opportunities in these regions.” Satisfied users are investing again Established in 1959, Japanese company Ebara Printing Co., Ltd. employs 35 staff and is a longstanding customer of Heidelberg. This multifunctional media service provider, which is also a certified supplier to a global company in the entertainment industry, is meticulous in preparing its investment decisions and lays down strict criteria. Based on detailed market analyses, Ebara has transformed its product portfolio, moving away from classic business and office stationery to become more of a solutions provider for packaging printing. The key to its success has been its ability to meet wide-ranging product requirements with substrates in thicknesses from 0.03mm to 1.0 mm and print on materials from cardboard to PP and PET plastics. To achieve these capabilities, Ebara invested in a Speedmaster CD 102 with UV technology in 2004, which it procured from Germany. In May 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the print shop installed its second Speedmaster CD 102-5+L, which this time had been manufactured in China. The new acquisition replaced two older Speedmaster

presses. While the first press is now primarily dedicated to cardboard production, the new CD 102-5+L is exhibiting its full versatility. As well as printing plastics, it is also being used to print card during peak periods, when it helps ease the strain on the first press. “Before we decided to invest, we very carefully scrutinized every aspect of the new Speedmaster CD 102. In the end, we were very impressed by the technological advances in evidence on the press. We succeeded in significantly boosting our productivity and we are also benefitting from considerable flexibility with regard to substrates,” explains Akinori Furukawa, Managing Director of Ebara: “We are confident that, with the new Speedmaster CD 102 and with Heidelberg as a partner, we will continue to enhance our competitiveness.” Bunkado the first Japanese print shop to install a Speedmaster CD manufactured in China In 2018, Bunkado Printing Co., Ltd., which is based in the Japanese city of Odawara, became the first Japanese print shop to install a Chinesemanufactured Speedmaster CD 102 with UV technology from Heidelberg. This meant the company was now running a total of three Speedmaster presses with UV technology in the 70 × 100 format class. The latest investment replaced a 17-year-old Speedmaster CD 102, enabling the company to double its original productivity. This and the flexibility of the press are essential conditions

for Bunkado’s expansion into the growing packaging market. As a result, highly flexible and qualityfocused sheetfed offset printing is becoming the company’s second mainstay alongside web offset printing. Kazuto Nakanishi, Managing Director of Bunkado Printing: “As the peak season was drawing closer,

we needed a new printing press with UV technology fast. Heidelberg therefore offered us a Speedmaster CD 102 from its Chinese production site, which was available at short notice. Before we concluded the purchase agreement, we saw the Heidelberg factory in Shanghai for ourselves and were deeply impressed by the state-of-the-art

and professional manufacturing operations there. That is what won us over and we have certainly not regretted our decision. The print quality, productivity, and reliability of the press meet the same exceptional standards that we have come to expect from Heidelberg presses that have been made in Germany.”

Manroland Sheetfed Snaps up Heidelberg’s “Mr Large Format” Manroland Sheetfed GmbH has appointed Mr Bernhard Schaaf to its senior management team as head of the large format press division, based at the group’s headquarters in Germany. Mr Schaaf was formerly head of large format at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HD), where he was employed for the past 14 years. HD announced last year that they are discontinuing large format press production. Rafael Penuela, CEO Manroland Sheetfed GmbH: “We are delighted to welcome Bernhard Schaaf to our leadership team. With the launch of the ROLAND 900 Evolution last summer coinciding with an increase in global demand for large format machines in packaging applications and Mr Schaaf’s intimate knowledge of the sector, the timing is perfect to strengthen

presses in 2020, demonstrates the company’s ambition and gives me the chance to explore further development opportunities in this highly important sector”.

Comment Manroland Sheetfed couldn’t have timed the launch of its nextgeneration large size format press series better. The company’s reputation in large format is well known to aficionados of the brand and HD exiting the sector has left a gaping hole in a growing market segment. It was a smart move on CEO Rafael Penuela’s part to snap up HD’s “Mr Large Format”. Following on from launching the highly acclaimed ROLAND 700 Evolution in 2016, the ROLAND 900 Evolution Series announced last year is equally packed full of technological wizardry. And of course, legendary ROLAND quality.

increase applied to our customers will be partly offset, as printers will benefit from higher aluminum

Agfa announced today that it will globally increase the prices of its offset plates. Soaring input costs, particularly relevant to aluminum, energy and packaging materials, in combination with sharply rising freight rates due to global logistic constraints make price increases unavoidable. Prices of offset plates will therefore increase between 5 and 10%, taking effect from April 1st 2021 onwards. Despite internal cost reductions, the magnitude of rising prices is no longer sustainable. The price

Utopia In this unique novel, writer Dr. Ahmed Khaled Tawfik warns the reader and shocks the reader with hard-to-believe scenes inspired by novels that resemble the horror of the signs of the Day of Resurrection, and the writer slipped from the near future to convey his horror with shocking neutrality. The Mockery of the human mind The author of the book, Ali Al-Wardi, was influenced by the philosophical ideas that criticized the assumption that the nature of the human mind is fixed. These ideas come from his reading of Ibn Khaldun, Sigmund Freud and Karl Mannheim. He reinterpreted their ideas of the mind and applied it to Iraqi society and the Iraqi mind. He believes that human nature is egocentric and determined in most actions, motivated by the subconscious. The role of the mind is to justify human behaviour. The mind is one-sided and biased and is untrustworthy. It is only an organ that aids humans in their quest for survival. Also the mind has a limited capacity and is surrounded by a dense rim of values, beliefs and interests. Al-Wardi has launched a relentless campaign against the Aristotelian logic and against reason and rationality. Despite his rational analysis, he could not free himself from the mindset he identified as a farce and did not distinguish between the productive and the instrumental mind. Born in Kadhimiya, Baghdad in 1913, to a religious and very traditional family. He grew up defying his family’s strict non-modern-educational policy, where his father wanted him to learn a craft instead of reading books. Nevertheless, Al-Wardi grew up with a disliking for work and crafts and a strong liking for books.

Exclusive interview with Mathew Faulkner, EMEA Senior Marketing Manager for Canon Europe’s Professional Print business Recently Canon launched its Insight Report, the latest EMEA research exploring the attitudes, needs and expectations of communication and print buyers, to help print providers identify opportunities and challenges in the market today. The report reveals a number of interesting and insightful facts. For example, based on the findings of the report fewer than 20% of printers and in-house print rooms are fulfilling the needs of print buyers or more than a third (33%) of today’s marketing budget is devoted to print. But perhaps the most interesting finding of this report is that many buyers believe

that print will continue to remain important. In order to dig deeper into data provided by this study we talked to Mathew Faulkner, EMEA Senior Marketing Manager for Canon Europe’s Professional Print business. Do you think Covid made print more relevant or less? Why? Marketers were already under pressure to reach multiple audiences, with complex messages, via a growing range of channels, using limited budgets. COVID has intensified these pressures, removing some tried-and-tested channels and forcing brands to be agile in responding to a changing landscape and consumer behaviour. Our research shows that brands are spending more of their budget

on digital, but they are worried about whether it can continue to give them the results they need. At a time when most face-to-face communication is on hold and has been replaced by digital touchpoints, marketers are seeing real proof of digital fatigue in their target audiences. Judging by an increase in unsubscribes, opt-outs and ad blocking, many consumers are disengaging from digital marketing. Research Canon conducted in association with ME Printer in 2020 revealed that brands favour print’s value, despite the trend towards digitisation. The EMEA-wide Insight Report reinforces this confidence in print as a creative, authoritative and trusted medium. So, there’s never been a better time for ts to remind brands that print has the power to break people away from their screens and cut through the digital fog, which makes it particularly effective. In the wake of COVID, PSPs have a clear opportunity to highlight print’s USPs (unique selling points) and emphasise that it can be cost-effective, fast to market, agile, responsive and ultra-targeted. In the Insight Report you mentioned brands who currently spend at least a quarter of their communications budget on print expect it to become more important, what about Canon? Are you planning to increase your print marketing budget? Actually, the Insight Report reveals that brands are spending as much as a third (33%) of their marketing budget on print. Canon faces the same challenges as any other global organisation with a diverse range of products and services, targeted at multiple audiences. To reach them, we must use a complex mix of analogue and digital channels, with carefully chosen tactics along the customer journey. And, like any large organisation, we have to tailor our channel choices to each audience and reflect the consumer behaviours and nuances of each geographical region.

We strongly believe in print as a vital part of the marketing mix and promote its unique attributes, internally and to the market at large. Like all brands, Canon looks to use print’s creative impact, reach and authority in multiple ways to support our multi-channel marketing campaigns. For example, through printed direct marketing brochures and other printed sales and marketing collateral, high quality photobooks, customer publications, educational materials, print media and OOH (out of home) advertising and so on. According to your report brands are calling for more input from PSP’s. They expect PSP’s to offer them consultation and different options, but PSP’s also expect their equipment suppliers such as Canon offer them solutions beyond the box. They want to know how can they use and manage hybrid workflows, how to integrate digital printing with traditional offset printing, what is Canon approach to help PSP’s work more efficiently? We’ve started by using the findings from the Insight Report to draw up a 10-point checklist of behaviours for success, which we’re calling the ‘Make it Mantra’. It’s designed to remind print professionals that lasting success comes when they exceed their buyers’ expectations. For example, we’re encouraging PSPs to work harder to interrogate briefs and go the extra mile to demonstrate their knowledge. In doing so, they will be able to build more opportunities for print by showing how it can be used at different stages along the customer journey to achieve a better return on investment from marketing campaigns. It’s supported by a growing bank of mentor-led educational content that gives print businesses more guidance on how to implement

these behaviours in their everyday work. In the Middle East, Canon has a direct sales relationship with its customers in UAE, KSA and Qatar, using a dedicated team who specialise in digital print technology solutions. Canon also has a network of channel partners to support the additional Middle Eastern countries to provide a dynamic and evolving programme of content and knowledge-sharing that has been shaped to the region’s customers’ needs. This dedicated approach helps our resellers to equip their PSPs with the necessary expertise to help them make better decisions that will enable them to grow and protect their bottom line. Knowing how to get the most out of their print and finishing investments, as well as optimising their workflows is only one side of the print professional’s pathway to success. Canon’s direct operations and authorised partners are also pivotal in ensuring that our customers (both PSPs and inhouse print professionals) become more consultative and harness the opportunity to build a closer working relationship with brand marketers, i.e., the people who buy print. There is no doubt print advertising is more reliable than digital marketing, although brands are well aware of this fact (including Canon, I suppose) They are slashing their marketing budget even before pandemic hit the globe and they

The real challenge for print is the widely held view among marketers that print isn’t trackable or measurable

ME‌Printer April - May 2021

are reluctant to advertise in print media, so many publications are forced to close down and the number of PSP’s also dwindling and subsequently equipment manufacturers face a shrinking market. It is a vicious cycle. In an apocalyptic scenario soon there will be no more magazine to advertise. Do you think this is inevitable? Brands have certainly told us that their marketing campaigns perform better when they use a mix of digital and analogue channels, including print. In fact, 40% of the respondents said that they would invest more in print if budget were no object, because of the positive impact it has on their campaign outcomes. However, the real challenge for print is the widely held view among marketers that print isn’t trackable or measurable, so they can’t calculate its contribution within a campaign. One in three respondents told us that they have no way of measuring the success of print campaigns. Digital marketing, on the other hand, is superficially easy to measure. Marketers can get instant feedback in the form of click throughs and open rates, Google Analytics, web and social media traffic data. Ultimately, brands will gravitate towards the media channels that reach their target audiences and deliver the greatest return on investment. In a specialist sector such as professional print, it’s logical that specialist publications with genuine influence with decision-makers will be recognised as an effective channel. Brands value print because it is creative, trusted, authoritative and enables them to reach audiences that can be difficult to engage digitally. Trusted trade publications have an opportunity to emphasise these attributes, if

In addition, we produce a range of mentor-led content, including guidance on Extended Reality (XR), giving PSPs knowledge that will help them to add value in conversation with their print buyers. Having identified the vital importance of measurability to brands in the latest Insight Report, we’re working hard through 2021 to build PSPs’ confidence to talk about measurement, and

28

media owners can demonstrate that they understand the audience and deliver creative propositions for brands that address the fundamental importance of measurability. Many brands are now looking for innovative ideas such as AR, QR codes etc. which is something that PSP’s can offer them. Does Canon have a plan or solution to offer to PSP’s in order to help them bring these innovative ideas to the market? We’re always looking for ways to support PSPs and enable them to maximise growth opportunities in the market. Augmented Reality (AR) is just one technology that is poised to transform marketing by delivering immersive experiences with the potential to engage audiences from all backgrounds and generations. Brands have seen the creative scope of AR and how it can give customers an enriched experience of a product or service. Print is an essential part of the multi-channel customer journey and can function as a familiar ‘launch pad’ into the virtual space. By gaining a solid understanding of what AR can do, PSPs have an important role to play in helping brands find the best way to lead the consumer into the online

environment, which also has the advantage of making it possible to measure print’s role in the campaign. At Canon, we have several initiatives designed to help current and prospective Canon customers stay abreast of trends and developments in online and offline communications. For example, the Future Promotion Forum covers the whole spectrum of omni-channel marketing communication topics and how different media can be used to increase sales success and marketing ROI.

E commerce and web to print are gaining momentum and Corona crisis is also giving them a boost, what is Canon’s approach to these popular trends? What sort of solutions you are offering to your customers to take advantage of these trends? One key success factor for many PSPs in the last year has been the ability to interact with customers digitally and to onboard jobs online, with minimal manual intervention. This has led to increased recognition of the need to adopt web-to-print capabilities. We’ve seen an uplift in demand from PSPs for ways to improve production line automation, including pre-flighting and printing. Using our PRISMA production solutions, PSPs have been able to cut manual intervention and turnaround times, while the EFI Digital StoreFront solution has been invaluable for PSPs looking to establish a customer-facing

self-service web-to-print interface, allowing print buyers to create and submit their own jobs for production. By innovating and sharpening their business processes, including web-to-print, PSPs can put the time they save to good use. These solutions enable them to be more creative, build a more consultative relationship with their customers, and update their product and service portfolio accordingly. All of these prepare the ground for increased customer satisfaction and repeat business.

to support sophisticated multichannel campaign management. Using a combination of Canon’s PRISMAprepare and a third-party solution called PrintShop Mail, we are able to deliver personalised print solutions for the Arabic language. We also offer a comprehensive range of educational content to help customers understand the potential of personalisation and think about how they could build this into their value proposition. Sustainability is not a buzzword anymore and now that pandemic forced many of us to work from home the sustainability begins at home, especially when we are using printers or any multifunction devices, what is Canon’s approach to sustainability during these strange times? New designs, new consumables, less waste? As you would expect from a technology innovator like Canon, sustainability is a high priority within our continuous product development programme. We’ve made great strides in making our print production technology more environmentally responsible, for example with reduced energy usage, and with innovations that help customers to reduce waste and maximise productivity and efficiency. But, while we can make strides to improve individual technologies,

true sustainability gains for PSPs come from end-to-end workflow optimisation, which makes the business operationally efficient and reduces waste in every area. So, what’s good for the PSP’s bottom line is also good for the environment. I think it’s also important that we as an industry work to dispel the consumer myth that print is environmentally harmful. We need the marketing community to understand that well-targeted print is one of the most sustainable communications media available. We have an opportunity to remind brands that digital print on demand allows them to order smaller print runs, just in time, and tailor production to need. So, they can be smart and more targeted in how they use print. Ultimately, we must look beyond the print engine and support PSPs to implement future-proof business models that help their customers to produce print that is aligned to their needs, without over-ordering or holding inventory. We have many incredible print-on-demand success stories in segments like book production, which are making entire value chains more sustainable. The potential to deliver significant advances that impact the printer, the buyer and the end customer is really exciting. Direct mail campaigns proved to be quite successful, it is even more successful if it is targeted and personalized. On the paper personalisation which is perhaps the strongest attribute of digital printing is yet to take the world by storm, where is the problem in your opinion? If a PSP has digital print-ondemand capability, then they also have the capacity to personalise print. And there are certainly clear opportunities for brands to make their printed applications even more effective by adding an element of personalisation. But, while most brands collect customer data in some form, there’s a tendency for marketers to equate data with online marketing, and to ignore its potential to make print marketing more targeted or individual. To close this knowledge gap and access this opportunity, PSPs need to be having more exploratory, consultative conversations with buyers, identifying the areas where personalisation or individualisation could add real value by increasing the relevance and emotional impact of communications. What are Canon solutions to help PSP’s offer personalised print products to their customers? I am not talking only about hardware, I am talking about software, workflow etc… The Canon software portfolio for production print includes various software tools that enable PSPs to create personalised assets, from straightforward variable data applications, right through to tools

Sustainability starts at home We live in strange times. Coronavirus has altered our way of life and imposed a new way of living; we are spending a lot more time in our homes. Home is not just home anymore, it is much

more, a blend of shelter, office, classroom and playground. One piece of technology that has become a household necessity as a result of this shift in lifestyle is the printer. Employees who were printing regularly in

the office are now working from home and need to have access to a home printer. Families with kids who study remotely will need to print out materials. Furthermore, printing at home is not limited to documents. You can also print

doesn’t compromise on printing quality. Put simply, an EcoTank is a family friendly solution offering a convenient and cost-effective alternative to the traditional laser or cartridge printer. It’s compact – on average, it takes up 22% less space at home or in the office than other printers. It provides easy access for refilling and a clear view of the ink levels. It features an enhanced ink filling system engineered to minimize the risk of spills and mess. The EcoTank comes with 1 set of ink bottles, equivalent to 79 ink cartridges – enough to print up to 14,000 pages. And printing costs are fewer than 2 fils/colour page, equivalent to AED 4,600 in cost savings over three years.[1] About Epson Middle East Epson Middle East oversees Epson’s operations in the Middle East markets, in close coordination with Epson Europe. Headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Epson Middle East works closely with a network of resellers and distributors across Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Syria and

Yemen, ensuring the availability of its wide, technologicallyadvanced product range to businesses and consumers in the region. www.epson-middleeast. com [1]Based on Epson calculations, average total saving and average number of inkjet cartridges required to print the same number of pages as the average yield of ink bottles included in-box within the EcoTank A4 4-colour range. Comparison between average yield (A4 prints of ISO/IEC 24711) of EcoTank “664”, “101” and “103” bottle series and the genuine consumables used within the 10 best-selling consumer A4 inkjet cartridge printers in the Middle East and Africa (IDC, Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, 2019 shipments, published Q1 2020). Total savings calculated with reference to the average purchase price of a printer amongst these top 10 models plus printing costs, calculated by dividing the relevant cartridge sales revenue and total yield by unit sales in the Middle East and Africa (IDC, Hardcopy Peripherals Consumables Tracker, 2019 shipments, published H2 2019). calendars, images, paper pads, stationary, stickers and a whole lot more to add color to your life and keep your children occupied. However, this increase in printing could mean a potential increase in cost, trips out to buy new cartridges and an impact on our individual sustainability efforts, in particular increased energy usage. We have seen around the world how during lockdowns environments recovered and this highlighted to everyone our impact as human beings on the natural world. So, let’s agree to cope with this change in our lifestyles by also considering the environment in our day to day lives and embracing environmentally friendly practices. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, our own contribution to sustainability can be as simple as careful selection when choosing our home printer and opting for a technology that reduces environmental impact. Powered by Epson’s Heat-Free technology, an EcoTank printer consumes significantly less energy than equivalent laser printers. In fact, if every home laser printer in the UAE and Saudi Arabia was switched to an Epson EcoTank printer, there would be a saving of $921,840 – that’s enough to power 166 homes of families of 4 for a whole year. And because Epson EcoTank printers come with ink bottles containing the equivalent ink of 79 ink cartridges it means fewer consumables – reducing the requirement of production, shipping and storing, and the resulting CO2 impact of logistics, as well as less plastic material to be managed at end of life. Moreover, an EcoTank requires no warmup time so it can print immediately, thus improving workflow and productivity. In addition, the EcoTank offers a range of features; some models include Wi-Fi connectivity allowing users to print from almost anywhere. In many aspects it’s a revolutionary solution that
