Pol Bury (1922 – 2005) was a Belgian painter, sculptor, jewellery designer, writer and graphic artist. He started out as a Surrealist painter, influenced by René Magritte and Yves Tanguy, and later exhibited with the Jeune Peinture Belge group and the CoBrA movement. Around 1953, however, Bury became fascinated by contemporary sculpture, inspired by Alexander Calder, and became one of the protagonists of kinetic art. Characteristic of his work is the extreme slowness of the often unpredictable movements that take place in his sculptures and objects. Bury is probably best known for his fountains and sculptures in public spaces. With his quirky and innovative work, Pol Bury conquered both the Parisian and New York art worlds, which at the time brought him international recognition. Now this handsome book gives us an opportunity to rediscover the multifaceted oeuvre of Bury – without doubt one of Belgium’s most important post-war artists. Brussels, bozar, Centre for Fine Arts, 24 February – 4 June 2017

The Van Gogh Museum is home to one of the world’s finest collections of French prints of the fin-de-siècle (1890–1905). This book, based on several years of intensive research into these works and their original context, takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Parisian printmaking, from elite to the street. Avant-garde artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec experimented enthusiastically with different graphic techniques to create beautiful and innovative artworks. Their modern prints could be seen all over Paris. Produced in deluxe editions as autonomous works of art, they were admired and discussed by connoisseurs and collectors in private and at exhibitions for a select and knowledgeable public. Meanwhile, out on the streets, posters on walls and advertising columns combined with illustrated magazines on newspaper stands presented a scintillating visual spectacle for the passing crowds. edited by Pierre Droulers. with contributions by Jean-Marc Adolphe, Fabienne Aucant, Tarquin Billiet, Malika Djardi, Michel François, Yves-Noël Genod, Yves Godin, Manon Greiner, Harold Henning, François Hiffler, Ann Veronica Janssens, Denise Luccioni, Barbara Manzetti, Denis Mariotte, Pascale Murtin, Kazuya Sato, Eugène Savitzkaya & Hans Theys
Pierre Droulers, a pioneer of contemporary dance and choreographer of more than 30 works, celebrates 40 years of creation. Since the 1970s Droulers has contributed to the rise and flourishing of contemporary dance. As one of the first students to graduate from the Mudra School, he soon became a key player in the French and Belgian world of dance. Always in tune with the zeitgeist, right from his earliest days he has collaborated with emblematic artists such as jazz musician Steve Lacy, members of the underground scene including Winston Tong and Minimal Compact and the Beat poet Brion Gysin. Subsequently, Droulers has developed exchanges with visual artists, among others Michel François and Ann Veronica Janssens. This publication is an implicit portrait of the artist, but also of an era in which contemporary dance emerged. Based on quotes, archives, images, notes and artistic encounters, the monograph presents a delicate three-dimensional journey. With its collisions and entanglements of faces, landscapes, words, recurrences of obsessions and fantasies, it reveals zones of light and shade in Droulers’s artistic world.

The Absent Museum is a large thematic exhibition catalogue that explores the absence of museums in public debates today. What relationship can exist between historical awareness and aesthetic commitment? How can artists maintain the tension between globalisation’s paradoxes and history’s turbulences, and their individual sensibilities and voices? Works and new productions by around 50 artists – both contemporary and those active in the recent past – map what is at stake for museums and the societies that inspire them. Little is known about Walter Leblanc (1932 – 1986), one of the key representatives of kinetic and optical art in the mid-20th century. This comprehensive monograph includes significant previously unpublished material, which provides insight not only into the art of Leblanc, but also into the extraordinary zero artist movement with which he was associated from the 1950s and participated in international exhibitions. Walter Leblanc is based on extensive studies of the artist’s work: with around 150 images of his paintings and sculptures, comparative works, historical photos and documents, it also features some of Leblanc’s writings, an iconographic mapping of selected works in museums around the world, and a bio-bibliographical appendix. In demonstrating the outstanding wealth of his creative output, the book reaffirms the enduring role Leblanc played in the development of modern and contemporary art on a global scale.

Charles’s conversation was flat like a sidewalk, video still / from Madame B (2014)
Emma & Edvard Looking Sideways Mieke Bal
Two true masters come face-to-face when the works of Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944) are juxtaposed against Gustave Flaubert’s (1821 – 1880) groundbreaking novel, Madame Bovary (1856). For the first time, Munch’s art is presented alongside an elaborate video installation. Madame B (2014) was created by Michelle Williams Gamaker and the internationally acclaimed cultural theorist, artist and curator, Mieke Bal. In this compelling book Bal explores the double theme of social loneliness and the cinematic mode of expression. Loneliness is often caused by a denial of communication, signified by the socially clumsy mode of ‘looking sideways’. The author explores the cinematic aspects present in Munch’s still images as well as in Flaubert’s pre-cinematic novel, and combines contemporary art theory with her own idiosyncratic way of looking at art – directly and closely. The reader is encouraged to reflect upon how we view each other in social situations and to question what happens when we are denied visual dialogue. Oslo, Munch Museum, 28 January – 17 April 2017

While legend has it that Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) sold only one work in his lifetime, it was not long after his death that sales of his paintings shattered auction house records. Based on extensive reseach of the archives kept in the Zentralarchiv des internationalen Kunsthandels (zadik) in Cologne, this book illuminates the critical role the Thannhauser Gallery played in cultivating and shaping an early clientele for the artist’s works. Founded in Munich in 1909, the gallery was Germany’s pre-eminent promoter of the avant-garde in the decades before the Second World War. In other European cities, and finally in New York, the successful business was continued. Over the years the gallery acquired and sold an impressive part of Van Gogh’s oeuvre: roughly 100 works, including many masterpieces, now part of museum collections all over the world. A fascinating study of an all-important player in the early 20th-century art market, The Thannhauser Gallery. Marketing Van Gogh transforms our understanding of an artist now universally revered.

Compiled by members of the Bosch Research and Conservation Project (brcp) and published on the 500th anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch’s death, this is currently the definitive catalogue of all of Bosch’s (c. 1450 – 1516) extant paintings and drawings. His mastery and genius have been redefined as a result of six years of research on the iconography, techniques, pedigree and conservation history of his paintings, and on his life. This stunning volume includes all new photography, as well as up-to-date research on the individual works. For the first time, the incredible creativity of this late medieval artist, expressed in countless details, is reproduced and discussed. Special attention is paid to Bosch as an image maker, a skilled draughtsman and a brutal painter, who changed the nature of painting around 1500 by his innovative way of working.

Technical Studies
Scholars have traditionally focused on the subjects and meanings of Hieronymus Bosch’s works (c. 1450 – 1516), whereas painting technique, workshop participation and the condition of extant pictures have received considerably less attention. Since 2010, the Bosch Research and Conservation Project (brcp) has been studying the artist’s works using modern methods. The team has documented Bosch’s extant paintings with infrared reflectography and ultra-high-resolution digital macro photography, both in infrared and visible light. Together with microscopic study of the paintings, this has enabled the brcp to write extensive and critical research reports describing the techniques and condition of the works, which are published in this extraordinary volume for the first time.

Hieronymus Bosch Visions of genius Matthijs Ilsink & Jos Koldeweij
Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450 – 1516) lived and worked in ’s‑Hertogenbosch, where he created a body of enigmatic and highly innovative paintings and drawings. His work is full of bizarre creatures, fantastic monsters and terrifying nightmares, alongside detailed painted landscapes. Bosch found inspiration in fundamental moral ideas such as temptation, sin and judgement. This magnificent book has been published to mark the major exhibition devoted to Bosch’s oeuvre in his native city. It draws on new, extensive and in-depth research into the artist’s work carried out by the international Bosch Research and Conservation Project (brcp). No fewer than nine paintings have been restored, the results of which are published here for the first time. The six sections of the book deal with the whole of the artist’s career. They explore themes such as the ‘Pilgrimage of Life’, Bosch’s relationship with his native city, the life of Christ, paintings of saints, Bosch’s work as a draughtsman, and his visualisation of Judgement Day and the hereafter. The book also includes many new photographs produced for the brcp. ’s Hertogenbosch, Het Noordbrabants Museum, 12 February – 8 May 2016

Alice Neel Painter of Modern Life Edited by Jeremy Lewison. With contributions by Bice Curiger, Petra Gördüren, Jeremy Lewison, Laura Stamps & Annamari Vänskä
Alice Neel (1900 – 1984) was one of the most important 20th-century American figurative painters. Her psychologically charged portraits, poignant still lifes, emotive cityscapes and intense landscapes bear witness to a century of change in attitudes, lifestyles and social mores. She took a strong interest in the victims of poverty and discrimination, whether they were African-Americans, Puerto Ricans, political activists, homosexuals or transvestites. From the late 1950s onwards she also painted remarkable, candid images of fellow artists and writers. Her naked female portraits were prescient of the concerns of second-wave feminism, renouncing both idealisation and eroticisation, while her depictions of mothers and children brought realism to a subject traditionally sentimentalised. Neel was a painter of modern life who presented an intimate but unconventional view of the unheralded aspects of contemporary living. From the Concertgebouw in Bruges, to an art gallery in the multicultural London district of Whitechapel and the City Archives of Bordeaux, the extensive oeuvre of founding duo Paul Robbrecht (b. 1950) and Hilde Daem (b. 1950), and – since 2002 – Johannes Robbrecht (b. 1977), has developed a variety and maturity that stands out on the international stage. Since its foundation in 1975, the work of Robbrecht en Daem architecten has been characterised by a precise global architectural vision that is timeless, sustainable and focused, but above all serviceable. This book focuses on their various collaborations with artists (Juan Muñoz, Isa Genzken), their dialogic approach to the old masters of architecture (Mies van der Rohe, Henry Van de Velde), their attention to the human presence in their buildings, their design of objects, and finally their fascination with numbers. Drawing on new textual and visual material, this lavishly illustrated volume features around 63 projects, including several previously unpublished. The authors’ contributions are accompanied by photographs by Attilio Maranzano, Filip Dujardin, Kristin Daem, Walter Vorjohann and Maarten Vanden Abeele, among others.
