OVENDEN EARTH MOVING TO EXHIBIT AT M&CCE Ovenden Earth Moving is a leading earthmoving, crushing & recycling and sea defence contractor. The company’s first sea and coastal defences contract was a beach nourishment contract in 1997 at Sandwich Bay in Kent. Since then Ovenden Earth Moving has carried out numerous similar contracts in many other parts of the UK and Europe. Various rock structures have been constructed, including revetments, groins, reefs and breakwaters ranging from 3,000 to 300,000 tonnes. Many beach renourishment schemes have been completed, involving millions of cubic metres of fill. The company has invested heavily in specialist plant for sea and coastal defence works including low ground pressure bulldozers, dump trucks, wheel loaders, excavators and rock grapples. All of its machines run on biodegradable oils to safeguard the fragile environment in which Ovenden Earth Moving work. All aspects of earthmoving have been undertaken by the Ovenden Earth Moving, from major road schemes, including most of the “dualling” of the A299 Thanet Way and the

AWARD WINNING COMPANY AT M&CCE EXPO Temporary Works Design (TWD), winner of an M&CCE Expo Innovation award, is to exhibit again at this year’s event, being held from 11-13 June in Southampton, UK. The event is colocated with Seawork, the unique on-shore and on-water commercial marine trade exhibition. Visitors to the M&CCE Expo and Seawork will no doubt be impressed by the range of solutions offered by TWD. One solution in particular will appeal to the Wind Farm sector, well represented at Seawork. TWD has developed a new method for the installation of offshore turbines. Usually expensive (Jack Up) installation vessels are required to install towers, nacelles and blades on the pre-installed foundations. High capacity cranes are used for the installation of the towers and nacelles. However, TWD believes that the cranes are actually largely overqualified for the installation of the blades (3 out of 5 lifts per turbine). The company’s floating installation method works in parallel to the tower and nacelle installation vessel resulting in a significant cost reduction. The company creates custom-designed structures and tools to help perform offshore or heavy civil installation projects, safely and on time. In late 2014 TWD set up a Naval Engineering department with a team of naval architects. The team delivers independent marine analyses and can integrate seamlessly with larger TWD scopes to ensure complete designs for safe offshore project execution. In June 2017, TWD opened a UK office and the UK team has now designed a revolutionary temporary work system, “the walking piling gate”, winner of the Innovation Award.

widening of the M2/A2 from Gillingham to Rochester, to various local bypasses. Golf course construction, reservoirs, embankments, remediation works, landscaping, landfill cells and every other aspect of earthworks have also been carried out for most of the major UK contractors.

Ovenden Earth Moving has its own landfill sites for inert wastes and in conjunction with these, recycling centres for processing demolition materials and soils into recycled aggregates and soils. The company now offers a complete crushing and screening service to its customers.

WAVEWALKER BV RETURNS TO M&CCE EXPO WaveWalker BV provides innovative marine solutions from land to sea. The company’s industry-first, eight-legged walking jack-up barge, WaveWalker 1 is capable of safely operating bi-directional movement whilst elevated. This allows the jack-up to walk over the seabed and relocate without floating, thus eliminating the restrictions that come with conventional jack-up barges. WaveWalker 1 is designed especially for marine operations in rough seas, surf, intertidal and shallow transition zones, ecologically sensitive areas, and on beaches. It offers safety, flexibility and efficiency when carrying out marine operations in those areas typically affected by such weather and tides. It can increase the productivity of a variety of conventional jack-up operations such as geotechnical site investigation, drilling and blasting, trenching, pipeline and cable laying, marine construction and pile installation, offshore windfarm operations and maintenance and other marine and underwater work. These are all areas where floating equipment or conventional jackups would experience extensive delays due to weather downtime, site access issues due to shallow water depths, as well as the safety implications of operating floating equipment in nearshore, large swell locations. WaveWalker 1 is also of sufficient size to

support live aboard applications, increasing operational productivity and reducing crew change downtime periods. Additionally, WaveWalker 1’s ability to relocate in position, without the use of supporting tugs, can allow for the client to reduce their project programme, risk and cost. Since WaveWalker 1 was launched the vessel has won multiple industry awards for innovation and has been deployed on a series of successful projects proving walking is the way forward! A remarkable example of the WaveWalker 1 in action was a recent deployment on a UK marine infrastructure project which included walking up the beach. The vessel walked an impressive ten kilometres over the total duration of the project. Visitors to the Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo can examine a 1:50 scale model of the eight-legged jack-up and discover the full range of services on offer from WaveWalker BV, from jack-up charter operations to full turnkey packages benefitting from in-house design, engineering, and manufacturing capabilities. Helen Popperwell, WaveWalker BV says, “WaveWalker BV is pleased to be returning to the M&CCE Expo for a third year. We are excited for this year’s show which is co-located alongside Seawork, bringing together the innovative products, solutions and services in the marine and civil engineering industry.”
