AMBITIOUS UK DEADLINE FOR ZERO EMISSION SHIPS All new ships for UK waters ordered from 2025 should be designed with 'zero-emission capable technologies', in ambitious plans set out by Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani to cut pollution from the country's maritime sector. The commitment is set out in the Clean Maritime Plan published in early July. The government is also looking at ways to incentivise the transition to zero-emission shipping and will consult on this next year. The plan also includes a £1 million competition to find innovative ways to reduce maritime emissions and is published alongside a call for evidence to reduce emissions on UK waterways and domestic vessels. The Clean Maritime Plan is part of the Government's Clean Air Strategy, which aims to cut down air pollution across all sectors to protect public health and the environment. It will also help deliver the United Kingdom's commitment to be net zero on greenhouse gases by 2050. The maritime sector has already taken significant strides to reduce emissions - hybrid ferries are Earlier this month the Croatian Boating Industry Association (CBIA) hosted the ICOMIA/IFBSO Congress in Split. NEW BRAND FOR THE LARGE WFSV MARKET Wight Shipyard Co Ltd is breaking into the Windfarm Support Vessel (WFSV) market with the launch of its new Vortisea brand The Vortisea brand, designed in collaboration with Australia's Incat Crowther, is specifically geared towards European and UK windfarms, particularly those further offshore, with the operator's expectancy for flexibility, speed and operational efficiency. “It's fitting that being so well established in the fast ferry sector we have chosen to enter the WFSV market. There is still a niche to be filled. We will be targeting all operators, but particularly those looking for a very high-quality vessel built in Europe,” said Peter Morton, CEO, WSC. WORLDWIDE COLLABORATION Wight Shipyard is no stranger to working with Incat Crowther. Back in February, a collaboration between the two companies delivered a multi-million-pound export order for a 250passenger river ferry to Twin City Liner in Vienna, Austria, and earlier this month saw the launch of two 37m fast ferries due for export to Ultramar in Cancún, Mexico.

Probably the most important design feature of the vessel is its marketleading wave height capability for transfer and transit, for this reason it was important to take a step forward in traditional WFSV design WSC has a long-established pedigree in the ferry building sector with customers including MBNA Thames Clippers and Red Funnel. But this is the first time the yard has ventured into the renewables sector. Ed Dudson, Managing Director, Incat Crowther, said that the WFSV Vortisea vessel has been designed to meet the latest standards in UK, German and Danish-Flag state requirements.

“Probably the most important design feature of the vessel is its market-leading wave height capability for transfer and transit, for this reason it was important to take a step forward in traditional WFSV design,” he said.

LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINIUM The catamaran hull design is exceptionally efficient, constructed from lightweight marine grade aluminium, so it's an environmentally friendly build resulting in a vessel with low fuel consumption. It is initially available two sizes a 27m and 32m with beams of 9m and 10m respectively. The vessel has multiple machinery options (CPP/FPP/ Waterjet/IPS), including hybrid. Operating speeds in excess of 30 knots are achievable depending on the machinery package selected. Installation of a quad engine and propulsion package has the advantage of offering excellent redundancy.

Largest plug-in hybrid appointed ‘Ship of the Year 2019’ The world's largest plug-in hybrid vessel, Color Hybrid, which is reaching the end of construction at Ulstein Verft, has been appointed 'Ship of the Year 2019' at Nor-Shipping. Ulstein Group CEO Gunvor Ulstein received the Award from HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway on 4 June 2019. The Color Line RoPax, yard number 311 has been designed by Fosen Yard, and will be put to service between Sandefjord, Norway and Strömstad, Sweden this summer. With a battery package of 4.7MWh, Color Hybrid will travel 12 nautical miles only on battery power, charged with shore power in Sandefjord. “We have during the last 100 years

developed a solid shipbuilding expertise. To us, this award is an acknowledgment and recognition of this expertise and our commitment to deliver quality and innovative

solutions to our customers. We share this award with all our employees as well as the Norwegian maritime cluster”, said Gunvor Ulstein in her speech. She also expressed her appreciation towards the ship owner, Color Line, for placing their trust in Ulstein Verft for the construction of this innovative and environmentally friendly vessel. Measuring 160m in length and 27.1 m in the beam, the vessel will carry 2,000 passengers and 500 cars. The 'Ship of the Year' is awarded annually by the Norwegian maritime magazine Skipsrevyen. The nominees are suggested among the readers of the magazine, while a jury appoints the winner.

PROFILE

KEVIN ROUGH DANIAMANT

Kevin Rough of Danish headquartered Daniamant is getting used to pushing for change. But, he admitted, “it wasn't something I was originally looking for”. As he explained, “I had grown up with Chemring, then McMurdo. I'd been there 18 years, and I was very comfortable with the team, products and my position as Operations Manager”. But thirteen years ago Daniamant acquired a portion of McMurdo's business, inviting Rough along: “I remembered one of my old bosses said 'opportunities are like doors, they open for you to go through them. You don't want to look back and ask, 'what if?' So, I took over as Daniamant's new General Manager for Lights - and was tasked to set up a new company from scratch.” At this point significant choices had to be made: “The first was deciding to update our lifebuoy lights as the designs we inherited were in some cases 40 years old. Not only was the technology out of date, but the build time was lengthy and the costs uneconomical.” A new, cutting-edge range beckoned. However, having committed to a radical redesign, Rough and his team decided to take these new products even further, though gaining offshore and US approvals required hefty

10 | JULY 2019

additional investment in time and effort. After 18 months they'd achieved SOLAS/MED/USCG and ATEX certification - and a Queens Award for Innovation followed. “It was a pretty tough process, but it increased our total sales of this product type tenfold and gave us an opening in the USA where we previously had no market share. In fact, this range became one of our biggest successes with payback coming inside three months, not the usual three years.” Unfortunately, smarter technology “comes with disadvantages”, explained Rough: “People started to break it apart, see what we've done... and replicate it. Once upon a time we didn't have to worry about that - but now we have to keep ahead.” Luckily, he has the knack of seeing the potential in novel innovation. Spotting an LED flare demo at a trade show aroused an echoing flash of inspiration: “Pyrotechnics have some great advantages, but they've also got issues around transport, storage and heat risk,” he explained. But an LED flare? The Omni Directional Electrical Optical (ODEO) signal stood well outside the regulations of the time, being limited to 'clever gadgetry' in application. However,

I remembered one of my old bosses said 'opportunities are like doors, they open for you to go through them. You don't want to look back and ask, 'what if?' So, I took over as Daniamant's new general manager for lights - and was tasked to set up a new company from scratch Daniamant trusted Rough's instincts and acquired the business, as a result countries such as Finland and the US are beginning to accept electronic visual distress signals for certain uses, the latest version winning the Safety at Sea product of the Year award. It's a good place to be, said Rough: “Sometimes you are developing a product to meet new rules - but now we are beginning to influence legislation itself.” He concluded: “To see something like this through you need determination... but that's not enough; you need support from those around you. Without the teams in Denmark and the UK it would just not have been possible.”

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE This Spido flagship is built according the ILENT / NBKB regulations for inland shipping and designed with specific environmentally low-impact features such as solar panels above the foredeck (mooring deck) and in the sides of the top deck and LED-lights. Furthermore, Shipyard De Hoop has put a lot of effort into decreasing noise and vibrations, the result of which can be seen in floating floors, flexibly mounted equipment and antivibration panels in walls and ceilings. As this vessel is expected to be stationed at the Spido jetty near the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the navigational equipment is placed on a hingeable topmast above the wheelhouse to provide the required air draft of 8,80 metres above the 1,10-metre waterline. The wheelhouse itself features all required instruments and equipment for navigating the Dutch canals. The on-board CCTV-system is capable of registering what happens on board and around the vessel and storing images on hard disk. Due to the shape and size of the vessel, in combination with the sometimes-restricted manoeuvring spaces, the cameras will also be used for navigating. In contrast to previous Spido ships, which only have air-handling equipment, this ship has real air-conditioning units. The main ACunit room to portside on main deck also features provisions to connect a mobile bar unit. For special music shows and DJ performances, 380VAC and speaker provisions are made in the technical spaces on the aft 12 | JULY 2019

deck; these technical spaces also have seethrough mirrors on which photos, movies or presentations can be projected from behind. The two rudder propellers (Z-drives with a double propeller) are diesel-direct driven, while the bow thruster is electrically driven by the generator sets. The main propulsors, as well as the diesel generators, are situated in two aft engine rooms. Both engine rooms are protected from fire by a FirePro system, injecting a FPC solid compound, which transforms into a rapidly expanding fire extinguishing condensed aerosol. Fire extinguishing is accomplished by the interruption of the chemical chain reactions occurring in the flame and not by the depletion of oxygen and/or cooling as suggested by the traditional triangle of fire. The important characteristic of this extinguishing agent is that people can survive in it, in contrast to the traditional CO2- or FM2000-systems.

SEAWORK REVIEW

WORKFLOAT SCOOPS TOP INNOVATION AWARD AT SEAWORK A Cornish startup with a clever folding work barge has won the overall 'Spirit of Innovation' award at the European Commercial Marine Awards 2019

8 WorkFloat marketing material

WorkFloat is a self-propelled floating work platform that 'folds' up to tow behind a 4x4 on the road or slides into a standard shipping container. Jake Frith, Chairman of the judging panel for the European Commercial Marine Awards said: “For a product to win the top innovation award at the ECMAs, it has to offer much more than an innovative idea as so many of the products entered are highly innovative. WorkFloat was unanimously agreed by the judges to be not only an elegant solution, but also one that fills an obvious gap in the market. WorkFloat is a small company and a young company, but with its established development plans, clear pricing and clever marketing it deserves every success. It is for these reasons that it finished ahead of many 'household names' within the commercial marine industry; some with many hundreds of times its turnover.” Toby Budd Founder & MD of WorkFloat said: ''We are beyond delighted. I couldn't believe it when they called out our name. Seawork has been brilliant for us. We only formed the company five months ago and already have our first WorkFloat in build. We obviously thought it was a good idea but also know from experience how the market can humble us all. Bringing the

The feedback could not have been better. We've had a strong interest in both our models and have a box full of very high quality leads to follow up on when we get back to Cornwall. Over half the leads are from contractors concept here and putting it in front of our prime target audience at such an early stage is invaluable.” “The feedback could not have been better. We've had a strong interest in both our models and have a box full of very high quality leads to follow up on when we get back to Cornwall. Over half the leads are from contractors. They have been the keenest to get a quote as they already have jobs booked or in the pipeline where they are struggling to get suitable floatation for their kit because of limited access, depth or budget. So, yes, it could not have been better - great show, no tyre kickers, just serious folk that know what they want. We will be back next year for sure, with both models on the water.''

Teignbridge reveals new propeller concept Global propulsion designer and manufacturer Teignbridge Propellers has launched its revolutionary new modular propeller at Seawork. The unique propeller is manufactured in aluminium bronze and is modular in design. Each blade can be removed and replaced if necessary. Known as the 'Clamp on Blade' design (CoB) it allows the vessel owner to store spare blades on board and if damage occurs, replace the blades without going to dry dock. In addition, large propellers can be boxed or packed into a container for ease of transportation. The world-wide patent is

14 | JULY 2019

pending, but the UK patent was confirmed this month. The CoB has attracted huge interest at Seawork with many ship owners requesting additional details with the intention of ordering. The CoB can be retrofitted to any shaft. According to Mark Phare of Teignbridge Propellers, on many vessels a damaged blade can be replaced by ballasting the boat to get the top blade and hub clear of the water. He recommends that a buyer of the new propeller system purchase one or two spare blades with the prop and keep them onboard for emergencies.

HYBRID POWER SYSTEM FOR SMALL COMMERCIAL VESSELS Rising to the challenge of a post-carbon age, there is a moral imperative to develop alternative energy usage in the marine environment writes Graeme Ewens Such developments must match those taking place in the automotive sector, according to Tim Light of Cornwall Ferries (Fal River), who recently introduced the Hevima System at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. One of his fleet, the 80-year-old, 50ft passenger boat Kingsley ll has been retrofitted with a modular hybrid power system to be used as a demonstration vessel for appraisal in a working environment. HEVIMA, the Hybrid Electric Vessel with Integrated Motor Assist is the brainchild of Dennis Doerffel, of REAP Systems (Renewable Energy and Advanced Propulsion) and Project Lead of this collaboration involving a range of academic, technical, commercial and regulatory partners. Doerffel gave the keynote address on the HEVIMA project at the Hybrid Seawork Commercial Marine Conference 2019 on 12th June. It is a modular system integrating the electric integrated motor, modular battery system and open energy management and control systems. Diesel engine, drive train mechanicals and electricals are all interchangeable. For most operational maintenance the mechanic's spanner and hammer have been replaced by the laptop. The computer control unit runs on Linux operating system monitored on a 7inch touchscreen display unit, with a back-up button to switch off electronics to run on diesel if the operating system needs rebooting.

REAP has been working on this system since 2013 and is now collaborating with the University of Southampton, Lloyds Register, Babcock International and Mainstay, supported by Marine South East and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (dstl) SMALL COMMERCIAL The power system being demonstrated is designed for small commercial vessels of up to 250Kw but once successfully proven it could be applied to thousands of working vessels from workboats to tourist boats, windfarm crew transfer vessels, pilot boats, shorthaul ferries and up to 15,000 inland waterways craft in mainland Europe. Eventually, larger vessels such as fishing boats, survey craft, bunker barges, superyachts and tugs will be making use of hybrid power systems. Battery safety follows automotive practice which is much better developed than in the marine sector. Powerful but lightweight lithium ion batteries can be used to start up in sub zero or extremely high temperatures. The weight of the test vessel is the same as with its old Perkins engine but the balance is better, especially as the batteries can be split up to redistribute weight. Hybrid power allows extended maintenance periods and means there is no need to run generators to power 'hotel' systems. The economic benefits have yet to be evaluated but the current appraisal is more about environmental concerns than fuel costs. REAP has been working on this system since 2013 and is now collaborating with the University of Southampton, Lloyds Register, Babcock International and Mainstay, supported by

8 Kingsley II was built in 1934

RICHER EXPERIENCE The Cornwall boat follows after a Venice water taxi was converted by REAP, which needed to function at low speeds of 2 knots beneath the canal bridges and up to 35 knots in the Venice lagoon. The demo boat, Kingsley ll, provided by Cornwall Ferries (Fal River), is the ex-Kindly Light, built by Mitchell in 1934, which had previously worked in the Isles of Scilly. Garrick Royle of Cornwall Ferries explains that customer expectations are for a richer experience; demonstrating responsibility for the environment, presenting a 'Green image' along with lower emissions, noise and vibration. The vessel is planned to travel up the River Fal from St Mawes to Trellisick gardens. In the narrow, tree-lined upriver sections it will run in electric drive mode allowing passengers to enjoy silent observation of nature and wildlife. Globally, environmental concerns have reached a tipping point and we can expect to see legislation at ports to combat pollution. For example, in the middle of London, where road traffic is strictly controlled, the river Thames carries a huge number of diesel-powered sightseeing boats, ferries, workboats, civil engineering support vessels, launches etc. As also publicised at this year's Seawork, the PLA have just taken delivery of their first hybrid-powered pilot boat, built by Goodchild Marine, which is expected to reach up to 15 knots under hybrid power. 8 Diesel engine, drive train mechanicals and electricals are all interchangeable

SEAWORK REVIEW Stage V engine cuts emissions

Damen Shipyards Group presented its new Shoalbuster design during Seawork 2019 in response to recent Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) changes concerning crew accommodation capacity. The 27m long, 11m wide Shoalbuster (SBu) 2711 offers operators a means to comply with new MLC regulations that stipulate increased accommodation capacity. By increasing the width of the SBu 2709 (with accommodation for six people) by two metres, Damen has achieved accommodation for seven people with the new vessel. The increased width has resulted in increased stability. “This has multiple benefits,” explained Damen manager of design & proposal, John Krielaart. “For example, it means that, without actually increasing crane capacity, this new vessel can lift more over the side.”

ML Power Systems launched M&H Engineering's Stage V marine engine for auxiliary and propulsion applications at Seawork 2019. The engine is designed for applications ranging from 55kW-410kW and meets regulations for Stage V Inland Waterways and IMO III. It has low operating costs and high reliability. Barry McCooey, managing director of ML Power Systems, which is the agent for M&H Engineering in the UK, said: "At the moment M&H Engineering is the only company to launch a Stage V engine. With a 99.5% reduction in NOX emissions, that's about as clean as you can get." He said ML Power Systems is currently in conversation with potential customers including shipyards.

This is a key point for operators working in UK waters or out of UK ports, one that makes this vessel a very interesting proposition MORE CAPACITY He added: “Furthermore, because this wider vessel has more buoyancy, it can carry more or heavier equipment on the larger deck space. Bollard pull is increased as

we were able to install larger, more powerful nozzles. We are also pleased to announce that this SBu 2711 has anchor handling notation - the extra stability allows it to handle bigger and heavier anchors.” Additionally, the SBu 2711 is still within the 24m load line length. “This is a key point for operators working in UK waters or out of UK ports, one that makes this vessel a very interesting proposition,” Mr Krielaart stated. “In fact, because it will be able to compete with larger vessels, we expect that this new design will be a real money maker for these operators.”

VESSEL COMMAND INTERFACE INTEGRATES DP2 Swiss automation and control specialist ABB has added dynamic positioning 2 (DP2) functionality to its vessel command execution solution, ABB Ability Marine Pilot Control Of the multiple pieces of news that have come out from, a clearly very productive ABB at Seawork this year, one of the most potentially game-changing to commercial marine vessel operations is this recent enhancement. Designed to optimize vessel responsiveness, efficiency and safety across the entire operating profile, ABB Ability Marine Pilot Control allows deployment of joystick control for manoeuvring at all times, including around the berth. Marine Pilot Control's manoeuvring capability is built around predicting where the vessel will be in 5-30 seconds instead of measuring its position on arrival. Software calculates the optimum way of executing decisions across the operational profile, depending on how the operator has prioritized speed, manoeuvrability or other parameters. Integrating DP2 functionality will add redundancy in technical design, ensuring that in the event of a single system fault, the vessel's position will be maintained. This functionality is particularly crucial for safe and reliable operation of construction and wind farm vessels working alongside fixed structures.

As well as integrating new functionality in the solutions’ human-machine interface, the DP2 performance draws on ABB’s experience as a DP systems supplier and insights gained from supplying the propulsion technology on which they rely Launched in September 2018, the system has been granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate by Lloyd's Register, a leading international provider of classification, compliance and consultancy services to the marine industry. As announced just a fortnight before Seawork at maritime trade fair Nor-Shipping 2019, Lloyd's Register has extended the AiP to now include the precision DP2 functionality.

As well as integrating new functionality in the solutions' human-machine interface, the DP2 performance draws on ABB's experience as a DP systems supplier and insights gained from supplying the propulsion technology on which they rely. Rather than reacting to external conditions, the system's DP optimizes energy efficiency against internal power plant status, thus adding value from the propeller up. This benefits responsiveness, efficiency and sustainability of vessel operations. As an example, accurate forecasts that a slight load peak will last a short time can avoid powering up another diesel generator. In November 2018, the system was the pivotal technology enabling trials of the ice-class ferry Suomenlinna II within a preselected area of Helsinki harbour that demonstrated how human oversight of vessels from anywhere is achievable using technologies in operation today.

Seawork exhibitor Volvo Penta is evaluating a new propulsion system aboard its own test boat ahead of a ferry electrification refit. The plan is part of the ElectriCity project - a collaboration between industry, academia and local government in Sweden. Once Volvo Penta has perfected the technology in the smaller test boat photographed here, it will power a new electric-powered ferry that will link both sides of the Göta Älv River. The ferry - Älvsnabben 4 - will be converted into an electric propulsion vessel in collaboration with its operator, Styrsöbolaget and the Volvo Group. This refit is scheduled to begin in early 2020. The test vessel - known as PTA81 - may be slightly smaller than the ferry, but it has the same batteries, controllers and electric motors that will be used on the Älvsnabben 4. The technology being tested is not just applicable for ferry operations, it is said to be relevant for most marine electromobility applications, and has been proven elsewhere in the Volvo Group. PTA81 is one of a fleet of vessels berthed at Volvo Penta's own testing marina Krossholmen. The conversion of PTA81 has just been completed and took under four months, and now a period of on-the-water tests begins. “The conversion itself went smoothly,” said

Niklas Thulin, Director Electromobility, Volvo Penta, adding: “We are learning valuable lessons about designing battery rooms and new opportunities with weight distribution, which will give us the ability to better optimize the balance and ride quality of vessels.” The plan is to start the conversion of the Älvsnabben 4 early next year, with the ambition of the ferry entering service at the end of 2020.

While this is underway PTA81 will continue to be tested so that the technology is thoroughly understood and robust before the ferry goes into operation on a public route. “This gives us time to validate the installation's performance, noise and vibration levels, as well as its drivability,” explains Thulin. “For sure, the electric driveline will have different dynamics compared to a combustion engine. Our objective is to fine tune these to improve the experience, but not make it so different that the vessel's crew need to be re-trained.”

COASTLINK COASTLINK REVIEW Conference

DIALOGUE AND COLLABORATION – THE KEY TO SHORT SEA SUCCESS Short sea shipping has a lot to be optimistic about - provided it can stay competitive by maintaining an air of communication and collaboration. That was the take home message from this year's Coastlink conference, the pan-European network dedicated to the promotion of short sea and feeder container shipping. The two-day conference focused very much on knowledge sharing - how delegates, short sea operators, ports and logisticians can best take advantage of future opportunities in the market. Overall, there was very positive feedback to Mercator Media's inaugural Coastlink conference, the first time it has taken place in six years. POSITIVE OUTLOOK Day one of the conference saw an interesting variety of speakers with presentations on how the sector can tackle the changing face of European logistics, including economic demands for transportation. Sarah Kenny, Vice Chair of Maritime UK, delivered the keynote address and talked about how the £40 billion the marine industry contributes to the UK economy. But highly trained and motived personnel need to be engaged to raise the profile of the industry to be ready for a range of trade futures. “If we want to move forward, the industry needs to sustain, grow and regain,” she said. Another stand out talk came from Justin Atkin, the port representative UK & Ireland for the Port of Antwerp, who confirmed that the UK & Ireland is the port's second largest trading partner with a 15% growth in the UK & Ireland in the last few years. He talked about the additional opportunities and how there is a need for transparency in the shipping process through digitalisation. "The sector needs to prepare itself for the future modal shift in shipping, shifting boxes off the road by rail and inland shipping." he said. Lastly, he talked about Brexit being a "catalyst to renew operational procedures", rather than a negative and a project that Antwerp is working on called NxtPort, where it is sharing digital data with its stakeholders in order to improve operational efficiency. The afternoon panel session opened with Andrew Ellis, country manager of Unifeeder UK, who talked about daily challenges to the industry including lack of truck drivers, transport costs, seasonal fluctuations, storage, damage of cargo, CSR & environment and Brexit. Delegates were given the opportunity to continue the day of interesting debate, discussion and comment into the evening with the conference networking dinner. THE BIGGER PICTURE Day two of the conference centred around how short sea shippers may benefit or lose out from the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its potential impact on European shipping. At a first glance, the initiative could be seen to only affect seep sea shipping, but the speakers said that it will

22 | JULY 2019

inherently, create or re-make links and feeder routes that will have a knock-on effect on the short sea shipping sector. Gavin Roser, Ambassador at Large of the European Freight and Logistics Leaders Forum, set the scene explaining that China is investing money in infrastructure along but not limited to the silk route.

8 A vibrant panel discussion at Coastlink 2019

The sector needs to prepare itself for the future modal shift in shipping, shifting boxes off the road by rail and inland shipping The question is whether certain countries can pay China back and the challenges that may bring in the future and how it will influence freight decisions. Some speakers were quick to embrace the opportunities that the BRI will bring. Krzysztof Zalewski from the Port of Gdansk highlighted that it is the gateway for cargo from East to Central and Eastern Europe for China so he said that it makes economic and political sense for the port to back the initiative. Some speakers though were a little more wary about the influence that the BRI could have on the shipping sector. Delegates had further opportunity to network at the end of the conference during a tour of Southampton Port's short sea shipping capabilities, kindly hosted by ABP Southampton.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY

SHELL OCEAN DISCOVERY XPRIZE WINNERS ANNOUNCED The winners of the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE were recently announced in front of an international audience gathered at the famous Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, writes Helen Atkinson

8 Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE winners pictured in Monaco

XPRIZE's incentive-based competitions are designed to solve humanity's greatest challenges. The Shell Ocean Discovery contest focussed on advancing technologies for rapid, unmanned and high-resolution ocean exploration. The $4 million top prize was awarded to the GEBCO-Nippon Foundation Alumni Team, whose concept integrated existing technology and experience with a robust, low-cost unmanned surface vessel and novel cloud-based data processing to offer rapid seabed visualisation. Japan's Team KUROSHIO claimed the $1 million runner-up prize for their integration of their partners' technology to create a versatile surface vessel and software platform capable of operating with different autonomous underwater vessels. An additional $200K 'Moonshot Award' recognised UK-based Team Tao's unique approach to seafloor mapping, even though they did not meet the competition criteria. The independent panel of judges reviewed field-test data from Kalamata, Greece, Ponce and Puerto Rico. In Kalamata, teams had up to 24 hours to map at least 250km2 of seafloor at 5m horizontal resolution or higher. They were judged against baseline charts from Ocean Infinity and Fugro. Esri offered its ArcGIS Online platform for use by the teams and judges. Additionally, teams had to capture high-definition images of biological, archaeological or geological ocean features to inspire future educators, students, policymakers and investors to pursue ocean discovery and protection.

The 16 alumni of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Postgraduate Training Program at the University of New Hampshire, USA, created and developed their concept in conjunction with their partners (Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Hushcraft Ltd, Ocean Floor Geophysics Inc, Earth Analytic, Teledyne CARIS, Raitt Orr and Associates, ShipOwners and OmniAccess) and equipment supplier, Kongsberg Maritime A/S. Funded by the private Japanese not-for-profit Nippon Foundation, their safe, efficient and cost-effective seafloor mapping solution used a 4500m depth-rated Kongsberg HUGIN Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), supported by a SEA-KIT Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV), Maxlimer, able to autonomously launch and recover the AUV and act as a communication link during subsea survey operations. They mapped 278km2 and produced ten high-resolution images, selected from standard HISAS synthetic aperture sonar imagery using Kongsberg's Reflection software. Eight 3D seafloor surfaces were produced using Fledermaus software. Kongsberg EM 304 multibeam data was also uploaded online, cleaned by team members at UNH and used to produce nine point cloud images using Qimera. Maxlimer has subsequently completed the world's first international commercial unmanned transit in May, successfully traversing the world's busiest shipping lane to deliver a box of oysters from the UK to Belgium.

CMS-Geotech supports university students Independent marine geotechnical specialist, CMS Goetech, has supported aggregate survey research being undertaken by the University of Southampton, UK. Professor Justin Dix and students from the University's Geology & Geophysics Research Group used the company's 24m multipurpose

survey vessel, MV FlatHolm, to undertake 3D Chirp sub-bottom profiling surveys in the Outer Thames estuary. Jointly developed by the university and Kongsberg GeoAcoustics, the geophysical system is designed to record the reflected seismic wavefield in true 3D at decimetre-resolution.

The project, sponsored by Hanson Aggregates Marine, aims to establish the role of (decimetre) high-resolution 3D seismic imaging in enhancing prospecting and management of offshore aggregate resources. The geophysics will be followed by vibrocoring and laboratory testing.

TUGS, TOWING & SALVAGE

THE INDUSTRY’S VIEW OF TUG TECHNOLOGY Key players from the world of towing have attended Tugnology '19, the biennial technical conference discussing developments within the industry

Credit: Peter Barker

Credit: Peter Barker

Liverpool was the venue for the two-day technically-based conference organised by The ABR Company Limited and covering design, construction, operation and economics of tugs so with around 400 delegates from as far away as Australia and Chile attending, Peter Barker went along for MJ to hear of the latest industry developments. Chairman of the UK Maritime Pilots' Association John Pearn who is also a Liverpool pilot started proceedings describing life at the other end of the towline. Admitting to not being a tug expert he acknowledged the value of pilots attending events such as Tugnology and likewise tug masters attending similar pilots' conferences. He spoke of times past when pilots and tug crews lived and socialised in the same communities allowing the fostering of personal relationships and a sharing of each other's work and concerns, nowadays however tug crews and pilots may not be based in the same area as each other. The message was clear, a close understanding between the two professions was important for achieving a safe outcome to the task in hand. High on the list of subjects debated at such conferences are the digital transformation of the industry and the wide choice owners have selecting the type of tug and machinery arrangements. Papers on these two areas made up the bulk of the conference with a well-spread examination of the subjects presented. With a modern ship generating over 20GB of data daily, tugs are becoming sophisticated sensor hubs monitoring numerous parameters with modern connectivity allowing complex realtime analysis shoreside of the vessel's efficiency. Digital applications are often 'built-in' with newbuilding tugs and Eva Peño from BV examined the subject of cyber security while Florus Wiming from Onboard described its Big Data platform on tugs of Kotug Seabulk Maritime and Multraship including AI solutions to optimise operations and tug design. Damen meanwhile described the monitoring installation in its RSD Tug 2513. Speaking to MJ, Jens Bay, senior project manager at Force Technology probably summed up the thoughts of many in his belief in the importance of attracting more young people into this area of the industry. Five papers explored the conundrum of extracting maximum efficiency from tugs that typically spend less than 5% of their operating life at maximum power.

Caterpillar and Sanmar described their work with the former's Advanced Variable Drive described as “proven technology for a hybrid age”. Based on a hydraulic 'hybrid' system it utilises planetary gears, typically involving a threeengine arrangement. The system couples Caterpillar's engines with its new MTA 03 thruster the speaker stating “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. Bucking the trend for minimal prime-movers Kongsberg Maritime and Jensen Naval Architects provided a convincing case for its mechanical-electric hybrid tug Delta Theresa due for imminent completion and operation in San Francisco Bay. Schottel's answer to the efficiency conundrum is its elegantly simple solution of a Cardan shaft incorporating a slipping clutch between the two thrusters allowing both to be driven by one engine during light loads. Kawasaki Heavy Industries meanwhile described its concept of an Optimal Eco Tug Fleet involving a combination of LNG and energy storage system-powered vessels. Kotug, Rotortug and Tugpins described their modular caliper winch concept (along with a working example) providing render/recovery abilities using advanced drives and brake control systems. Multiple high-torque servo-motors and caliper brakes are used instead of asynchronous motors and disk brakes, the modular design providing upgrades via additional motors and/or brakes. The prevention of fouling in internal cooling systems and external surfaces was a subject addressed by Dominic Findlow from NRG Marine UK who eloquently explained its ultrasound antifouling system. Transducers with a range of around 5m are simply bonded to the dry side of the water chest, the elimination of expensive sacrificial anodes another benefit. Lankhorst Ropes described the “vital connection” of various towing line elements and methods of connection. Extensive testing accompanied its developments, specifically with its own soft shackle connector (see MJ March 2018), a simple connecting arrangement which has been designed to exhibit strength, reliability, ease of handling, safety and cost efficiency. MJ will be looking closer at some of the papers presented at Tugnology '19 in future editions.

TUG DELIVERY AND YARD ORDER ROUND-UP

28 | JULY 2019

8 Nora B is prepared for service at Hardinxveld

Sanmar has reported delivery of a 24m, 60tbp Bogacay class RAmparts 2400SX tug to Marintug of Turkey. The familiar combination of Caterpillar engines and Rolls-Royce thrusters produce 3,530kW of power, Caterpillar also providing two C4.4 gensets. The ABS-classed tug carries fire-fighting and unrestricted service notations. Last and by no means least is what can be considered a significant delivery from Neptune Marine in the advanced version, DP2 EuroTug 3515 hybrid propulsion tug Nora B for Zumaia Offshore S.L. Nora B (reported in detail in MJ June 2019) is a workboat as much as a tug offering a spacious 250m2 aft deck for operations including: ROV work, diving support, geotechnical survey, mass flow excavation and cable-laying and recovery. Deck equipment includes: anchor-handling; towing and tugger winches; tow pins and sharks-jaws; moonpool; fourpoint mooring capability and knuckle-boom crane with integrated winch. The diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system includes generators powering two 192kW electric drives in conjunction with twin 970kW diesel engines offering different modes to match client requirements including DP1 or DP2 operations. The e-drives can also work as shaft generators for the ship's systems when free sailing or when mobilising.

Credit: Damen

Starting therefore with Damen, one of the smallest tugs in its portfolio is the Stan Tug 1205. Just 13.08m LOA with a 5.28m beam and 1.82m draught it is a popular choice for towing and mooring operations in restricted areas and two of these 8tbp tugs have recently been delivered. Abu Dhabi-based Six Construct's activities include: breakwater, jetty, marina and quay wall construction and it recently acquired the Stan Tug 1205 Audrey. The BV-classed vessel is powered by two Volvo D9 MH engines delivering in total 442bkW to Kaplan fixed-pitch propellers in Van de Giessen Optima nozzles. The second Stan Tug 1205 delivery is Triton for Swedish construction company Peab Anläggning AB. Deck equipment includes a Mampaey towing hook aft, sturdy fendering with a push bow also included. Accommodation for two persons is located beneath the resiliently mounted wheelhouse. Another popular design is the slightly larger Stan Tug 1606 and recently Toulonnais V joined the fleet of Société Nouvelle de Remorquage et de Travaux Maritimes. Towing, mooring, pushing and survey operations are included in its basic functions and it is powered by two Caterpillar C18 TA/A engines providing in total 894bkW (1,216bhp) and performance figures of 16.4tbp and speed 11.4kn. Similar to the previous smaller Stan Tugs, a Mampaey towing hook is provided aft with accommodation below main deck on this example for four persons. Turning to Damen's ASD Tug series, the 2310 variant VTS Ayia Marina has been delivered to VTS Vasiliko Terminal Services, a Cyprus-based company familiar with Damen's products, operating two ASD Tug 3212s. Caterpillar 3512C main engines provide in total 3,000bkW (4,023bhp), 48.8tbp and speed 12.6kn via Rolls-Royce US 205 Mk1 thrusters. A hydraulically driven, 130t brake, split-drum winch is provided forward and Mampaey towing hook aft along with a Heila HLM 10-3S crane. A single fifi monitor is located on the bridge deck forward and once again, accommodation is provided for four persons. Following recent delivery of the ASD Tug 2411 Manxman to SMS Towage of Hull (just seven days after contract signing) a second example Marskman has followed, completed in a little over a month. They are the first Damen-built tugs for SMS, the UK's largest independent towage operator and the 72tbp pair will operate in the Humber estuary as well as providing coastal towage services. Completing a story previously reported here and involving another Damen ASD 2411, Port Nelson in New Zealand has welcomed home its new addition Huria Matenga II following a delivery passage from the builder's yard in Vietnam. The final delivery to report for Damen, and the largest is the ASD Tug 3010 ICE Aleksandr Kozitsyn for JSC Vostochny Port Russia. Caterpillar 3516C engines and Rolls-Royce US 255 thrusters provide total power of 3,840bkW (5,150bhp) and a bollard pull of 58 tonnes. The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping-classed tug carries fire-fighting notation and towing arrangements include a spilt-drum, 150t brake load winch forward and Mampaey tow hook aft: accommodation is provided for eight persons.

TUGS, TOWING & SALVAGE

8 Northguider was secured for the winter to be salvaged this summer

SALVAGE INDUSTRY ROUND-UP A snapshot of activity covering just a few months makes it clear there will always be work for the global salvage industry The year started with a collision between the pipe-laying vessel Star Centurion and a tanker north of Bintan Island, Indonesia. Smit and its Indonesian partners Samudera Mbiantu Sesami were initially contracted under Lloyd's Open Form with tugs and salvage personnel soon arriving on scene. The pipe-layer subsequently capsized onto its port side and the priority changed to recovery of around 450t of fuel on board, a task accomplished in around one month without a spill. Smit continue to work on site providing a guard vessel and caretaking services in anticipation of a wreck removal. Ardent Global was involved in a similar pollutant-removal operation after the fishing vessel Northguider grounded north of Svalbard in extreme conditions including temperatures of -40'. Permanent darkness and the threat from polar bears precluded a quick refloating attempt and the vessel was secured for the winter including the placing of remote monitoring equipment on board. With an eye to protecting nesting seabirds in spring a wreck removal operation is planned for this summer. A ship grounding posing serious environmental risks previously reported in these columns (see the June 2019 Seawork edition of MJ) has been resolved with its refloating from a reef off Rennell island, part of the Solomon Islands. The 75,392dwt bulk carrier Solomon Trader grounded after dragging its anchor resulting in a quantity of oil being spilled from the vessel. US-based Resolve Marine was appointed to provide a response including transferring fuel oil between tanks on board along with dealing with pollutants that had already escaped. Around 230 of an estimated 600 tonnes of oil on board were removed from the vessel and after a wait for suitable tidal conditions the salvage team successfully refloated Solomon Trader. It is reported the vessel is expected to be scrapped. Following the sinking of the roro/containership Grande America in the Bay of Biscay in March after a fire broke out among its cargo, Grimaldi Lines has suffered another similar incident involving a fire on board its vehicle carrier Grande Europa around 25 miles south of Palma de Mallorca in the Mediterranean. Part of the vessel's crew were taken off the ship

by helicopter with three vessels joining the response and after the fire was brought under control Salvamento Maritimo reported that the vessel was under tow of the emergency response vessel Marta Mata for Palma Bay. Another incident where the ship becomes victim to circumstances beyond its immediate area of influence perhaps. Tsavliris Salvage has been providing assistance to the bunkering tanker A. Michel which reported a flooded engine room following the explosion of “a device” while at Fujairah Anchorage. A Lloyd's Open Form salvage agreement (including SCOPIC) was signed with Tsavliris with the tanker reported to be listing and down by the stern.

Permanent darkness and the threat from polar bears precluded a quick refloating attempt and the vessel was secured for the winter including the placing of remote monitoring equipment on board Another successful salvage operation has been completed by Resolve Marine with the refloating of the cement carrier Raysut II from the pristine beaches of Al-Fazayah Beach, Salalah. The grounding dates back to May 2018 when the partly loaded vessel lost headway and steerage after the port of Salalah was evacuated due to adverse weather conditions. The vessel's stranding was reported to be “devastating” to the local tourist community, the 5km long landscape being home to five of the world's seven species of sea turtle and Resolve was chosen for the wreck removal operation because of its plan to refloat the vessel in one piece, thus limiting environmental damage. Raysut II was loaded with 6,750mt of dry powdered cement and it had been declared a constructive total loss after an initial responder was unsuccessful in its attempts to refloat the vessel. Resolve mobilised its crane barge RMG 1000 and tug Resolve Monarch from Singapore and after patching up and refloating the vessel it was towed to Salalah by Resolve Monarch. The refloating in one-piece option was chosen over other plans involving cutting up in-situ which would have involved delays. Once berthed, a complex operation followed involving reactivating and modifying the vessel's cement pumping system allowing both the 'fluid' and partially solidified cargo to be transferred to road tankers.

TUGS, TOWING & SALVAGE

Boskalis subsidiary Smit Salvage has been appointed salvor for two tankers and their cargo following suspected attacks on the vessels in the Gulf of Oman. The incidents follow alleged attacks on four tankers earlier this year and rekindling memories of the 'supertanker wars' of the 1980s where merchant shipping was caught up in the war between Iran and Iraq. Loaded tankers became pawns in the dispute, subjected to sustained periods of attacks often involving Exocet missile strikes. Together with other international salvors Smit was heavily involved in the aftermath in highrisk operations which put the otherwise 'Cinderella' and brave work of the salvage industry onto the front pages and television screens globally. The first of these latest incidents occurred when the 27,000dwt product tanker Kokuka Courageous suffered damage to its starboard side while 70 miles from Fujairah. The 21 crew on board abandoned ship, its cargo of methanol reported as intact and the vessel in a stable condition. A towing connection was established, and the crew were able to return to their ship and at the time of writing

SALVORS RESPOND TO GULF TANKER INCIDENTS

8 The fire on Front Altair was quickly extinguished

Kokuka Courageous is anchored off Fujairah with support vessels in attendance. The second incident on the same day, was more serious involving a suspected attack on the 110,000dwt Front Altair loaded with 75,000 tonnes of naphtha and on passage from Abu Dhabi to Taiwan. Three explosions were reported resulting in a fire on the vessel's starboard side amidships. Front Altair's Norwegian owner discounted an Iranian news agency report that the vessel had sunk and thankfully, all 23 crew were once again evacuated to as nearby vessel.

The fire was extinguished the same day but the following day Boskalis reported the situation on Front Altair as “still worrisome” and a Smit team was flown in to carry out the salvage operation accompanied by specialist equipment. It was later reported that the vessel was under tow towards the UAE with boundary cooling operations underway. AIS data currently shows the Front Altair anchored close to the Kokuka Courageous off Fujairah and the salvage industry will doubtless be reflecting on events of nearly 40 years ago which included further attacks on tankers already damaged while salvage teams worked on board and in the immediate area.

MARINE RENEWABLES

FENDERIT FOR WIND TURBINE TOWERS Shown at Seawork International for the first time was a new type of fendering that can be applied to tube piles writes Dag Pike The vertical tubular piles are attached to the main turbine tower base and these are subject to considerable wear and tear as the transfer boats move up and down in waves. This removes paint coatings and can make them prone to corrosion which can increase the maintenance requirements. The new fendering system that has been developed by Fenderit provides a covering for the steel pile which not only reduces the possibility of corrosion but also provides some absorption of the impact from the transfer vessel. Buoyant Works Ltd. produces a wide range of fendering options for workboats and tugs and these are made from a high density, hard wearing polymer. Being mainly of foam construction these are light weight but highly durable and the same material has been used for the turbine tower application. For this application the foam is formed in a cylinder with one longitudinal split and this allows it to be simply wrapped around the fender pile.

Fenderit claims that not only will this new fendering system absorb the shock loadings from the transfer vessel but it will also reduce the possibility of damage to the pole and reduce the prospect of marine growth The fendering is adaptable to variations in fender pile diameter and once the fender pole has been cleaned or shot blasted the fendering is attached... The fendering is approximately 3cm thick and the outside skin is flush so it helps to absorb the impact shock loadings from the transfer vessel. The bow of the vessel can also slide up and down the pile in the normal manner under wave influence. Buoyant Works Ltd. claims that not only will this new fendering system absorb the shock loadings from the transfer vessel but it will also reduce the possibility of damage to the pole and reduce the prospect of marine growth. It is coloured safety orange to help the skipper of the transfer vessel identify the contact area and it would normally be applied over the range of the tidal area.

The company claims that its fendering polymer has excellent tear and abrasion resistance and the way it is designed gives it excellent energy absorbing characteristics. Buoyant Works Ltd. is based in Cornwall and whilst this application is for a steel structure the material in other mouldings is particularly suitable for aluminium and composite hulls when used for regular vessel fendering.

‘NATALIA’: PROTOTYPE HYBRID BARGE The first sightseeing barge of its kind has proved that if designed with care, hybrid systems are not just cleaner and greener, but can equal or surpass their traditional counterparts for reliability

8 Natalia will soon be joined by another three sister vessels exploring some of the lesser-known waterways around Northern Europe

As skipper Peter Jenner of Backwater Tours commented, “Natalia hit the water and went straight into service without trouble”. “That's almost unheard of for what's basically a prototype,” added system integrator and specialist Graeme Hawksley of Hybrid Marine. More, on a sunny day, it can keep up its usual sedate 2km/h to 4km/h pace powered almost entirely by the 6kW solar panels fitted to the roof with minimal depletion of the battery bank. The electrical drive can also pick up its pace and deliver 9km/h on slack water, the four-cylinder, 3.8l diesel engines cutting in to push that up to 15km/h on the rare occasions it's necessary to run against a heavy flow. In fact, after a year of stress-free running, owner Backwater Tours has seen enough take up that it's just in the process of ordering two more. So, how has it achieved it? To answer this, Hawksley took MJ on a tour of the twin engine rooms as the boat paused on the Seine, just south of Paris. “Our philosophy is not to put anything extra on the drive chain that can fail.” He explains that while there are parallel hybrid configurations that connect the motor generator between the engine and the gearbox, this means that “to go to electric running you have to disconnect the engine ... and that means putting another clutch in the line”. Instead, Natalia has a pair of 20kW motor/generators sitting on top of the gearbox, connecting to the shaft in parallel with the engines, “which means you can simply move to hybrid drive by putting the gearbox in neutral”, he said. “This way, you have maximum redundancy. Even given multiple hybrid failures, you'd still have the engine able to turn the shaft.” However, it has flexibility on its side as well. A 49kVa generator can charge the battery bank when shore power is not available: it can also propel the barge entirely or partly drive the boat and route the excess to charge the batteries. “The electrical consumers hang off the central DC bus, the threephase output being handled by a 60kVA inverter bank,” explained Hawksley. Despite all this, in Jenner's opinion running Natalia is fairly “straightforward”, and gave a short demonstration of turning the boat, mid-river without engaging the engines.

34 | JULY 2019

However, it should be noted that onshore charging supplies most of the power. This, said Hawksley, “is provided by standard industrial three-phase points”; an appealing option for local authorities as it only requires extending a typical, industrial supply through to the waterside. Further, other hybrids could use the same infrastructure: a strategy which stands to avoid compatibility issues over the longer term. The next two boats will, however, have a few modifications “as we are cutting the battery bank in half, down to 150kWh” explained Hawksley. This will result in a faster, more effective charging profile, the cut down weight - which accounts presently for two-thirds of the ballast - will allow moving the bank nearer to the propulsion, minimising some of the long DC bus links. And of course, it should be a little cheaper as well. At time of writing Backwater are in advanced discussions with the original yard for the next build, said regional manager Craig Jenner. He added that the company's vision is to have over 20 of these boats, “after all, we have 10,000km of waterways to play on”. It's also interesting that Backwater Tours are intent on environmentally sensitive tourism in areas that may have fallen by the wayside “so the boat is travelling into places that haven't been opened up for many years” said the younger Jenner. He added that Natalia was “the first vessel to call into the Somme port of Arras in 13 years, making a double page spread in the local papers”. 8 Natalia remains fairly straightforward to drive

POWER & PROPULSION

Even given recent advances, lithium ion batteries are still plagued by weight and cost issues. So, Phinergy Marine's aluminium-air batteries, which promise to be significantly lighter and cheaper per kilowatt hour, should draw an audience. The energy is created by the reaction between the aluminium anode, a cathode immersed in electrolyte and the oxygen in the air itself. The interesting point is this battery is reloaded, not recharged: the racks are furnished with new aluminium plates and the old waterbased electrolyte (which is circulated a number of times before being refreshed), can be recycled to return the alloy. It's also inherently safer, there's no chance of thermal runaway and range is consistent, even in cold or hot weather both challenges for li-ion systems. Despite the common, low-cost ingredients it delivers a surprising bang for its buck: roughly 8kWh per kilo of aluminium, explained Phinergy founder and CEO Udi Erell. To put this in context, a current, commercial li-ion 40kWh battery roughly 1.6m by 1m by 0.2m, weighing in at 278kg can be contrasted with a 40kWh al-air battery of 0.8m by 0.25 by 0.2m weighing 20kg, which even with the electrolyte only brings the weight up to around 100kg - although a clever, space saving trick is

AL-AIR BATTERY BEATS LI-ION ON WEIGHT AND PRICE

8 A 40kWh al-air pack is far smaller - and cheaper than it's li-ion counterpart

to use one of the vessel's own tanks for storage. However, Erell also explained that the containerised version of this battery itself creates the pure water that makes up 70% of the electrolyte by utilising the process' excess heat. Most importantly, it's far, far cheaper than the usual alternatives: “Taken by kilowatt hour, the total costs for the containerised version comes

to about a third of what you pay for lithium ion, said Erell. Usefully, the technology can be scaled up or down: a 40ft container model will output 7.2MW, while Phinergy also offers an automotive solution with a range commensurate with most non-electric cars. It's obviously very different from conventional battery storage, more suited to a level output than ramping up and down. Therefore it's ideally paired with a (small) lithium unit which can absorb a charge from the al-air pack when the loads are low and provide for peak demands. Al-air could prove useful for a number of vessels with a regular duty cycle, underlined Erell, as reloading can be accomplished very quickly at the quay.

H2 CALCULATION TOOL ANSWERS THE BIG QUESTIONS Hydrogen could provide a cleaner, greener maritime fuel - but many will be asking, quite rightly, 'can it be achieved with the vessels I have... and how?' Therefore, a calculation tool under development by Hydrogen Europe aims to give owners the basic, underlying information, enabling them to make the right choice for their particular operation and not waste energy chasing the many potential, but ultimately inappropriate, configurations. As the organisation's innovation manager Grzegorz Pawelec explained, it's easy to look up a comparison of different fuel/engine possibilities given some fairly basic input, covering power, full load operating hours, storage capacity and so on. It highlights some interesting insights: take for example, a case study based on Fromveur II, a

Of course, [in the case of Fromveur II], the extra volume is a problem as it could result in a decrease of the number of passengers that the vessel may be able to carry

8 Hydrogen Europe's calculation tool shows both if, and how, transition to hydrogen can be achieved and outlines likely costs

3.3MW-powered passenger ferry. Assuming (fairly reasonably) an ICE efficiency of 45% and fuel cell efficiency of 55%, moving to compressed hydrogen from MGO would increase the onboard fuel volume by six, from 39m3 to 230m3, although there is a perk: the weight of the fuel decreases from 33t to 10t. However, use liquefied H2 and the necessary volume drops to 3.5 times that of MGO: 140m3. Importantly, the tool also incorporates operational costs, allowing for the differing

regional energy prices to enter the equation. Therefore, assuming renewable electricity at €40/MWh, the hydrogen option is about 40% more expensive than MGO, however, with renewable energy at €25/MWh, H2 fuel costs reach parity. “Of course, [in the case of Fromveur II], the extra volume is a problem as it could result in a decrease of the number of passengers that the vessel may be able to carry,” added Pawelec. But, he noted that the vessel currently bunkers only once or twice a week, with enough fuel for 60 to 70 hours of sailing: therefore “it should be possible to alleviate the problem resulting from lower energy density just by bunkering more often”, he said, reducing onboard tank size. He concluded for this operation - and many others - “it's more an issue of logistics than economy”. Usefully, Hydrogen Europe's online calculation tool can return figures for all kinds of queries: for example, the overall cheapest option against the top six most effective GHG emission strategies, putting the decisionmaking firmly where it should be: in the hands of the owner-operators.

NEW SUPERCHARGED MERCURY PUTS OUT 450HP The new Mercury Racing 450R outboard features a 4.6-litre V8 FourStroke powerhead with supercharger to produce 450 peak propshaft horsepower and 40% higher torque than the 400R

8 The 450R accommodates 26inch centre-to-centre mounting on multiengine transoms

Claimed to be over 130kg lighter than the nearest competitor, the new 450R delivers industry leading power-to-weight ratio in a compact, efficient package. Multiple gearcase control system, tie bar and styling options are available, and it is designed to deliver all of its performance on readily available 89-octane (95 RON) pump fuel. Designed and developed in-house and manufactured in Wisconsin on a dedicated Mercury Racing production line, the 450R is based on the same 4.6-litre V8 powerhead used for the normally aspirated Mercury Racing 300R outboard models. Mercury Racing has applied its supercharging expertise to extract incredible power from the 4.6-litre V8 with a 2.4-litre, belt-driven twin-screw supercharger that delivers pressure charging with zero lag for instant throttle response. To maintain peak performance, a boost bypass valve automatically adjusts maximum boost pressure in response to changing ambient conditions. To better manage engine heat, the Mercury Racing 450R is fitted with a special high-capacity oil cooler and an exclusive poppet valve in the midsection to provide a higher volume of cooling-water flow on-demand. The electronics and engine components are all designed and positioned to create the tightest package possible while maintaining good service access. The design and placement of the new supercharger and charge-air coolers allow the 450R to use the same slim-line cowl as the 300R model while incorporating higher flow intake vents. Like all Mercury Racing outboards, the 450R accommodates 26-inch centre-to-centre mounting on multi-engine transoms. The exclusive Mercury Racing Advanced MidSection (AMS) features heavy-duty stainless-steel guide plates and stiffened engine mounts to stabilise the outboard and enhance high-

UPGRADES FOR CATERPILLAR DIESELS

8 The emission reduction kits are claimed to demonstrate significant reductions of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide

Caterpillar has introduced upgrade kits for selected engines from its range of marine diesels that will bring the engines up to modern emission standards and improve efficiency writes Dag Pike. With the Cat Emissions Upgrade Kits for select marine 3500 engines, the engines can be converted from EPA Tier 1 and Tier 2 equivalent engines to stay compliant with current

regulations. With a Cat Performance Upgrade Kit which is also available for selected marine 3500 engines the engine's performance can be upgraded in line with current standards. The performance upgrade kits include proven system parts to convert from a mechanical to electronic injection control system, and this is claimed to make fuel savings of 4% and in some cases of refit, fuel savings have totalled more than 9%. The performance upgrade kits also improve load acceptance and acceleration while reducing vibration and noise. They also improve the diagnostic and display capability with live messages and alarms. The turbo charger is also optimised for engine efficiency. Caterpillar claims that it is possible to get a return on the investment of fitting these kits in less than 9000 hours of running mainly by the improved fuel consumption. Both of these upgrade kits can be fitted to the engines during a scheduled major overhaul and can be carried out without removing the engine from the vessel. This means that the

benefits of a new engine can be achieved without replacing the engine and also significant fuel savings can be achieved without removing and/or replacing the engine. The emission reduction kits are claimed to demonstrate significant reductions of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide which makes them particularly suited for engines fitted to tugs and other vessels that operate in harbours. Upgrade kits are also available for selected engines from the 3600 range of Caterpillar diesels. Available for engines from the 6 cylinder through to the 16 cylinder units, the 3600 EUI Upgrade Kit is designed to regulate engine solenoid timing and duration, and dispense exact fuel amounts at every cycle for optimized engine combustion. The improved fuel injection means reducing combustion by-products and it can also lead to reduced maintenance checks and improved fuel efficiency. It will also lead to a reduction in transient smoke and steady state smoke but these kits are not available for engines operating on HFO.

DIESEL OUTBOARD WINS SEAWORK AWARD Cox Powertrain was announced as the winner of the Marine Power and Propulsion category at the annual European Commercial Marine Innovation Awards for its 300hp diesel outboard, the CXO300 The awards, sponsored by A-Plan Insurance, celebrate the outstanding individuals and innovative companies that comprise this vibrant and productive industry sector. All products involved in the awards comprised new vessels or projects that were launched or completed within the last 12 months and which demonstrate fresh approaches, rather than being enhancements of existing products. Judges chose Cox Powertrain's pioneering CXO300 for its novel design and the boldness of its from-scratch approach. They recognised that instead of modifying pre-existing components, Cox's designers opted to pursue innovation in every aspect. The fact that the CXO300's service life is anticipated to last three times longer than conventional petrol outboards was another major point in its favour. “We are very proud to be handed this award,” Faye Dooley, Marketing Communications Manager at Cox Powertrain commented, “Not only have we worked hard to create an innovative product, we have also redefined standards in service, and we are extremely proud to be recognised for this.” In addition, Cox Powertrain offered the new engines for trials aboard two test boats during the show. We took a ride out on a twin CXO300 setup, finding the engines to be refined and quiet at at everything from tickover to planing speeds. As well as holding its first international dealer meeting just ahead of the show, the company announced that production of the CXO300 will commence in October, with the first round

of delivery to take place by the end of the year. The firm has received a “remarkable” number of enquiries since its order books opened in November last year. When fully operational, the production line will run two shifts per day to meet this exceptional level of demand. Cox's 4.4-litre 4-stroke V8 CXO300 has been shown to offer excellent performance with maximum torque delivered right through from 1,300 to 3,000rpm, reaching 479ft lbs, almost double the torque of its 300hp petrol rivals. Predicted cost-oflife savings are as high as £150,000 due to reduced fuel costs, fewer maintenance requirements and an expected threetimes-longer life span. The selling price of the engine was also released at Seawork as £35,000 + taxes.

standards and expected fuel consumption. The Bison P1A will now be fully evaluated in laboratory and field tests, final efforts related

to weight and geometrical optimization will be completed before the cowl design is frozen. In the tests performed up to this point the OXE Diesel 300 is expected to consume about 40% less fuel than a 300hp petrol outboard. This reduction and the fact that it runs on diesel will significantly contribute to reduced environmental impact for the OXE Diesel 300. The conducted tests indicate that CO2 will be reduced by more than 35%, CO by more than 99% and HC + NOx by more than 70% when comparing to petrol outboard standards. The engines are designed to comply with the demanding Euro 6 automotive regulations when mounted in cars, exceeding any comparable marine emission regulations.

After a long conversion period, the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger Samuel de Champlain sailed from Damen shipyard in Dunkirk into the Loire estuary to start dredging operations. Thus, TSHD Samuel de Champlain becomes the first French flag vessel using Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel, resulting from the first conversion ever of a dredger into dual fuel. Dragages-Ports EIG, owner of the ship, decided in 2016 to replace the existing diesel generators of Samuel de Champlain by a dual fuel (diesel and LNG) system, in order to improve the reliability and the environmental performance of the ship. This conversion is part of a wider European project called « S/F SamueLNG for a Blue Atlantic arch », implemented by a consortium of 12 members, including the French ports of Nantes-SaintNazaire, Le Havre and Rouen, but also the Spanish ports of Vigo and Gijon and their technical partners, and Central Dredging Association (CEDA). The European Union awarded a grant to this project via the Connecting Europe Facility and its horizontal priority “Motorways of the Sea”, without which the project would have been compromised. The 17,8 M€ contract concerning the conversion of THSD Samuel de Champlain into dual fuel engines was awarded by DragagesPorts in July, 2017, to Damen Shiprepair &

Under the contract, Damen delivered a turnkey package that included engineering, replacement of existing gensets by three 3180kW dual fuel gensets based on MAN 6L35/44DF engines, two type C tanks containing 153m3 of LNG each, representing a range of one week. Two refuelling stations, a nitrogen unit, piping networks and the modernisation of the control/command system were also included in the contract. Engineering studies and procurement took more than 14 months, and the conversion works started on October 8th, 2018, in Damen shipyard

in Dunkirk. The delivery of the ship was initially scheduled to take place in January, 2019, but was delayed several times due to the numerous technical issues of this first-of-a-kind conversion of such a complex vessel. The results of the whole SamueLNG project will be presented during a European conference in SaintNazaire (France), on the 25th and 26th of September, 2019.

SCALED PRODUCTION Additionally, peak shaving allows energy production to be scaled according to the ship's nominal operating needs, and not to the worst-case operating scenario. Due to the solution proposed by Barillec Marine, the installed diesel power can be as much as halved, energy efficiency is improved and maintenance costs reduced. For a ship refit, integrating peak shaving into the existing installation optimises the efficacy of a hybrid fossil/electric propulsion system. For a ship that makes four-minute trips every quarter

Diesel-electric propulsion can be made more efficient when it is combined with an energy storage system and peak shaving can be utilised to achieve this efficiency, said Barillec Marine. Peak shaving, a technology offered by Barillec Marine, is used by energy suppliers and distributors in terrestrial networks. It allows load peaks to be absorbed and the necessary power to be released when required. To avoid oversized diesel engines, Barillec Marine advises the installation of a storage system that optimises the energy production necessary for very short timeframes. “The solution is adapted for managing highly variable load peaks, without polluting emissions. Reducing the installed capacity also reduces fuel costs, operating costs and maintenance costs,” said the company.

8 Peak shaving allows load peaks to be absorbed and the necessary power to be released when required

of an hour up to 30 times a day, the estimated fuel saving is around 20%. "This capital expenditure can be made for new or existing boats, as the fuel savings alone justify the cost. There are also benefits in terms of navigating comfort, noise reduction and the nuisances associated with the smell of diesel!,” said Barillec Marine.

The Rolls-Royce Power Systems division and its Chinese partner Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company intend to further intensify their collaboration in the construction and sale of engines. A corresponding agreement was signed by representatives of both companies during the visit to Friedrichshafen by a highranking delegation from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region headed by Chairman Chen Wu and Yuchai Chairman Yan Ping. The two companies are already partnering closely in their joint venture MTU Yuchai Power, which was founded in 2017 and manufactures MTU S4000 diesel engines in the southern Chinese city of Yulin. The joint venture has been manufacturing MTU engines for power generation.

Reviewing all ammonia power generation options, the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is clearly the most efficient. However, it does have practical challenges as the power density and load response capability are not on an acceptable level yet Niels de Vries, Lead Naval Architect at C-Job Naval Architects and research lead, said: “Reviewing all ammonia power generation options, the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is

AMMONIA AS A MARINE FUEL

Credit: C-Job

Ammonia can be safely and effectively applied as a marine fuel to reduce harmful emissions according to new research published by C-Job Naval Architects. The ground-breaking research uses a new concept design, an ammonia carrier fuelled by its own cargo, to study the concept of using ammonia as a marine fuel and achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in shipping. It shows ammonia can be used as marine fuel if a number of safety measures are included in the design.

8 Ammonia carrier concept design

clearly the most efficient. However, it does have practical challenges as the power density and load response capability are not on an acceptable level yet. “Therefore, in the short term applying the internal combustion engine is the way to go.” With the International Maritime Organisation goals to reduce total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 and eventually fully eliminate harmful emissions, it

is of the utmost importance that the global maritime industry looks into renewable fuels like hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. C-Job joined the Ammonia Energy Association last year to intensify collaboration with other industries on this subject to realise its ambition. Together with Proton Ventures and Enviu, C-Job established a consortium in 2017 to further investigate ammonia as marine fuel. With the completion of this theoretical research, C-Job has provided a significant contribution to the first phase of the consortium project which will now move towards the next phases, which includes lab testing, pilot and evaluation. Niels has been exploring renewable fuels for ships such as ammonia since 2016 and has now completed several years of research culminating in his Master Thesis 'Safe and effective application of ammonia as a marine fuel' at TU Delft. He says: “While this research is unique in its scope and provides a valuable first step towards the application of ammonia as a marine fuel, further research is still required to explore its full potential and feasibility.”

BUSY NAVALROCHA LOOKS TO LNG OPPORTUNITIES Portugal’s Navalrocha shipyard is eyeing new work in the LPG product carrier and small-scale LNG markets following a busy first half year

8 Navalrocha is located in the heart of Lisbon Harbour on the north bank of the River Tagus

Navalrocha commercial director Sergio Rodrigues said the yard located in the heart of Lisbon Harbour on the north bank of the River Tagus has completed a wide variety of repair and conversion projects so far in 2019. Contracts have involved livestock carriers, polar expedition vessels, car-ferries, tugboats, cargo-carriers, cruise ships and sailing vessels. In line with future growth plans Navarocha is also reporting growing numbers of LPG and Product Carrier projects. “As we look ahead, Navalrocha is increasingly well placed to cater to the LPG Product Carrier and small-scale LNG markets,” said Mr Rodrigues. “Our close proximity to major Portuguese ports including Sines, Leixoes and Aveiro provide a compelling edge. Meanwhile, our competitive rates, fast turnaround times, reliability and growing track record place us in strong stead to capitalise on this expanding market. Earlier this year our longterm client Epic Ship Management booked in for its sixth drydocking in 36-months, with two further projects scheduled for 2019/ 2020. The latest job involving the Epic Croix LPG tanker followed work in 2018 to Epic's St Vincent LPG carrier. Danish shipping company Ultragas later booked in the Happy Bride LPG carrier. “The contracts highlight a growing volume of LPG and product carrier work being undertaken at the yard. While the LPG market presents major opportunities for growth we are further targeting the small-scale LNG market, notably bunker vessels compatible with Dock 1.” In January and February, a flurry of activity helped kickstart the year. One of the yard's first projects in 2019 involved the Mira livestock vessel owned by El Amira Maritime Agencies Co. January also saw the continuation of work to the Corinthian polar expedition cruise vessel. The Grand Circle Cruise Lines vessel underwent a 40-day project including wet dock

repairs. Additional work was completed on Transtejo car ferry Lisbonense. Further commercial contracts involved pier repair work to the Nordanhav self-unloading cargo carrier owned by Citadel Shipping in Sweden and operated by Thunbalogen Ship Management. In February, the yard also welcomed the Poseidon tugboat to Dock 2. Springtime saw the arrival of the Rolado Mar passenger and ro-ro cargo ship owned by Atlantic Ferries. Later in March Navalrocha secured a 120-day restorative project for the NRP Sagres tall ship and school sailing vessel owned by the Portuguese Navy. Other notable projects in April involved a 10-day drydock for the Castelo de São Jorge Tugboat and Grand Circle Cruise Lines later booked in the Clio cruise ship for its biennial wet dock. Rounding off the first half of the year Naval Rocha welcomed Sea Dream II yacht-style cruise ship operated by Sea Dream Yacht Club. The luxury cruiser underwent a fast five-day drydock before the 90m Tejo Belem general cargo vessel visited for a 12-day repair project. Further work in May included a 20-day drydocking for the Anjos dredger involving certificate renewal, steel, piping and mechanical work. However, looking to the second half of 2019, Mr Rodrigues said the yard's sights remain firmly fixed on key growth markets including LPG repair work. “While we currently deliver an average of three major LPG projects each year there is capacity for much more. As we continue building strong experience in the LPG and Product Carrier market, we aim to further catapult into the LNG and Chemical Carrier markets, which are now being built to smaller dimensions, making an ideal fit for our operation.” In order to stimulate greater LNG activity Naval Rocha is also considering investment in cryogenic workshops as part of a broader site expansion plans. 8 Navalrocha commercial director Sergio Rodrigues

VESSEL REPAIR & MAINTENANCE

The 57.1m German Bight island ferry Frisia IX is back in service after extensive modernisation reports Tom Todd. Frisia IX, which belongs to German ship owner Reederei Norden-Frisia, is nearly 40 years old and spent four months at the yard. Diedrich Schiffswerft, on the Ems near Emden, is one of Germany's busiest small ship and boat specialists. The latest work on Frisia IX covered outer deck coating and interiors. Also tackled on the 8.9m wide, 785 shallow-water passenger ferry which draws just 1.15m, were routine annual repairs and maintenance.

Norden-Frisia Chairman CarlUlfert Stegmann said the work during the two yard visits of Frisia IX this year was costing the owners a total of about €1.2 million. He noted similarly expensive work had been carried out on the company’s Frisia II in 2017/2018 Diedrich reported that conservation work and propeller and shaft inspections were also carried out as well as inspection of both rudders

and bow thruster plant. A DNV-GL survey was also conducted on the veteran ferry, built by Diedrich in in 1980. This year's renovation of Frisia IX is being followed by a second visit to the yard later this year which will apparently run into 2020. During that stay, the ferry's Volvo Penta TAMD 162 diesel engines, of total 600kW, are being replaced by more powerful Volva Penta D16 units of total 736kW. Diedrich said the new engines were “of the latest generation, in other

words more fuel and emission efficient”. The type was already in use on other ships in the Norden-Frisia fleet, it added. Norden-Frisia Chairman Carl-Ulfert Stegmann said the work during the two yard visits of Frisia IX this year was costing the owners a total of about €1.2 million. He noted similarly expensive work had been carried out on the company's Frisia II in 2017/2018. Norden-Frisia's Project Manager Holger Eilers said the comprehensive renovation of Frisia IX had been an important step in passenger quality improvement. Two specialist workboats attached to Germany's Waterways and Shipping agency (WSA) in nearby Emden Port were among other recent notable Diedrich customers. The 23m research and survey ship Lütje Hörn came in for hull, rudder, propeller, shaft and sea chest checks. Hull conservation work was also carried out on the almost 30-year- old ship. The specialist 31.8m Emden WSA research, survey and buoy-laying ship Friesland, another vessel built in 1991, called for similar propeller, shaft and rudder inspection work.

VESSEL REPAIR & MAINTENANCE

Commercial ship repair activity has resumed at Germany's historic Lindenau Schiffswerft in Kiel reports Tom Todd. All work at the historic yard, founded in 1905 and one of Germany's oldest shipyards, has been “temporarily suspended” since January as part of ongoing re-organisation. Operation of the yard's dock facilities was completely halted “for technical and economic reasons”, according to Privinvest Group partner yard Nobiskrug in Rendsburg. The re-organisation was first announced last year when the word was that Lindenau repair would probably close for good by year's end as part of “unavoidable” cutbacks and restructuring. Privinvest said at the time that Lindenau's mainstay civilian repair business was “no longer profitable because of competition from eastern Europe”. The 2018 announcement caused surprise because Lindenau had previously reported full repair docks. The decision was also criticised by Germany's giant IG Metall union, many of whose members are shipyard workers. Now however a new statement by Lindenau Werft says that as of June the yard is once again open and has been offering its infrastructure facilities for civilian ship repair and associated services. At the same time the yard's 480m long fitting-out quay is being manned and more hall, external areas and office facilities are being offered for rent to maritime companies, it added. Lindenau said the aim of a new “development concept” was “to create the synergies to offer comprehensive and fast service” to operators of passenger and commercial ships as well as officially operated workboats”. The multi-purpose oil-recovery ship Vilm has been given a clean bill of health after class renewal at Hamburg's Norderwerft, writes Tom Todd. The 48.5m x 10.20m Vilm, now 20 years old, left Norderwerft late June after what Dirk Baake, a specialist with Germany's Havariekommando in Cuxhaven, told Maritime Journal was a routine visit for five-year class renewal. He said ship, engines and equipment were checked for operational safety, and added corrosion protection work as well as routine repairs were also carried out during drydocking. The Havariekommando is responsible for oil combat and recovery operations along Germany's 2,389 kms long North Sea and Baltic coastline running from The Netherlands to Poland, and for the deployment of vessels on behalf of the German Government and its states. Vilm is one of 25 vessels of various types listed by the Havariekommando as available for service - nine for Baltic and 16 for North Sea operation. Some of the ships belong to the federal states while others are governmentowned. Vilm is one of the listed Baltic service ships and has been managed out of Rostock in eastern Germany by Bitunamel Feldmann since it was built 1999.

LINDENAU REPAIR GETS NEW LEASE OF LIFE

Yard manager Frank Hildebrandt said the new concept underscored the advantages to ship owners which have long been enjoyed by Lindenau. They include proximity to local shipbuilding skills and services and the yard's prime location next to the Kiel Fiord locks of the Kiel Canal. That 100 kms long facility is the world's busiest man-made waterway and is used by more than 30,000 ships a year - all of them potential repair customers for Lindenau.

8 Back in commercial repair - Kiel’s Lindenau Schiffswerft

The “development concept” now introduced was not fully detailed. Nobiskrug CEO Bertram C. Liebler said however “it creates the foundation for a sustainable industrial exploitation of the Lindenau location”. He added that it had also been discussed with city, federal state and government representatives.

OIL SPILL WORKHORSE BACK IN SERVICE The Havariekommando is responsible for oil combat and recovery operations along Germany’s 2,389 kms long North Sea and Baltic coastline running from The Netherlands to Poland, and for the deployment of vessels on behalf of the German Government and its states 8 Specialist Vilm gets class extension

The Rostock region boasts several frontrunning ship repair facilities of its own but the 590gt, 12 knot Vilm sailed several hundred kms from Rostock through the Baltic and Kiel Canal to dock in Hamburg for its latest class renewal. Asked about that choice of yard, Dirk Baake said contracts were usually decided for economic reasons and often also had to do with available yard capacity. Vilm is a multi-purpose work horse drawing maximum 2.8m and suitable as a diving base

and for research and wreck-raising operations as well as for oil recovery. It is propelled by two Cummins KTA 19-M3 main engines each of 447kW. Manoeuvrability is described as excellent because of its two Kamewa Aquamaster rudder propellers and Schottel SPJ 57 T Pumpjet bow thruster. Also on board are a Cummins 4 BT 50kW diesel generator and extensive pumping gear. Deck equipment includes two Palfinger hydraulic cranes with 8.1m outreach and the ship has 50 m2 of free deck space and room for five 20ft containers making it also suitable as a bunker vessel.

VAN OORD LAUNCHES SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE Dutch dredging and marine construction major Van Oord will present a series of white papers to underline its commitment to sustainability, writes Larz Bourne The first paper on Accelerating Climate Initiatives highlights the scale and scope of the climate challenges the world is facing, with Van Oord proposing ways of meeting these challenges using adaptation measures. Van Oord sees the world facing many challenges in the fields of water management and energy. The goal will be to make societies more resilient and sustainable whilst creating a better world for future generations. Sustainability, innovation and collaboration are the keys. Van Oord's S.E.A. programme is about taking action. Accelerating Climate Initiatives, Enhancing the Energy Transition, and Empowering Nature and Communities are the main topic areas at its platform https://www.vanoord.com/sustainability.

Elsewhere, Mexico’s president Andres Manuael Lopez Obrador gave the green light last month for land reclamation works to the value of €235 million associated with the new PEMEX oil refinery at Dos Bocas in Mexico. Within ten months Van Oord will reclaim some 12 million cubic metres of sand to create 600 hectares of new land One example to be found there addresses the ways in which climate change, soil subsidence, heavy rainfall in monsoon season and increasing urbanisation are causing problems in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, one of the fastest sinking cities in the world. The Indonesian government has therefore introduced the Jakarta National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) , a plan aimed at guaranteeing the safety of millions of Jakartans during floods whilst expanding the city's living and working environment towards the north.

Van Oord has been working on the country's Tanjung Priok port expansion project, part of the Indonesian government's plan for investing in infrastructure whilst providing a sustainable incentive for economic growth. Van Oord has also constructed the Kapuk Naga Indah island, the first in a series of three islands intended to protect the coast of Jakarta from the sea as each year parts of the city sink by some 10 to 20cm. Elsewhere, Mexico's president Andres Manuael Lopez Obrador gave the green light last month for land reclamation works to the value of €235 million associated with the new PEMEX oil refinery at Dos Bocas in Mexico. Within ten months Van Oord will reclaim some 12 million cubic metres of sand to create 600 hectares of new land. Van Oord will deploy its largest cutter suction dredger and a medium size trailing suction hopper dredger for the land reclamation works. The project also includes 400 hectares of dynamic compaction and six million cubic metres of dry earth movement.

8 Jan De Nul Group is focusing in particular on drop-in biofuel to achieve ambitious CO2 reduction targets during the works at Nieuwpoort

AMBITIOUS CO2 REDUCTION TARGETS AT NIEUWPOORT Belgium’s Jan De Nul Group has committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 15% a year during maintenance dredging works at the Nieupoort coastal marine Jan De Nul is believed to be the first company in the world to aspire to such a reduction in a commercial project. In collaboration with the Flemish government, the company also wants to include by 2020 a minimum requirement of 15% CO2 reduction in 80% of maintenance dredging contracts in Flanders. Jan De Nul Group is focusing in particular on drop-in biofuel to achieve the ambitious CO2 reduction target. This is a high quality, sustainable replacement for fossil diesel made of vegetable oils and waste flows. Engines do not have to be adapted in order to use drop-in biofuel. Not only are CO2 emissions reduced, but far less fine dust is released in the air. Drop-in biofuel burns more efficiently than conventional diesel and, because it uses waste flows as a raw material, it is also beneficial to the 'circular' economy. Finally, it is a very clean fuel that is most suitable for high grade engines.

By choosing Jan De Nul for this project, the Agency for Maritime and Coastal Services (MDK) within the Department of Mobility and Public Works has showcased its pioneering profile within the Flemish government to achieve the reduction targets. Under the Paris Climate Agreement the Flemish government has committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 15% by 2020. MDK chief executive officer Nathalie Balcaen said: “As a maritime authority within the Flemish government, we want to focus on reducing our environmental footprint in every possible way. We therefore pay particular attention to green criteria when we define specifications for the market. This already leads to concrete CO2 reduction today, particularly by paying attention to ecological performance during dredging works and to the contractors with whom we cooperate. “The MDK pays attention not only to climate requirements when drawing up procurement contracts. We assume our responsibility in the way we work as well. We are greening our own vessels as well in order to reduce our CO2 emissions. For instance, we are in the process of building an electric boat.” The announcement of targets comes shortly after the Flemish government's decision to agree to a three year pilot project for testing the CO2 'performance ladder' for government contracts.

Alewijnse AlViVi platform for DEME dredgers Rotterdam area based systems integrator Alewijnse Marine has introduced a new virtualisation and visualisation platform for use on trailing suction hopper dredgers. The AIViVi solution, which can also be applied to other vessels, acts as a central hub, centralising and integrating all the dredging process systems and distributing the visualisation of data to all networked screens onboard a ship. It has already been installed on several trailing suction hopper dredgers operated by Belgium's DEME Group. Alewijnse has been working with DEME for more than three years in the field of automation on board dredgers. Previously completed projects include hopper control

systems such as the Alewijnse Draught and Loading System (ADLS) and the Alewijnse Suction Tube System (ASTS) with complementary automatic functions. AlViVi provides a fast and flexible platform consisting of several virtualised dredging process related systems. It replaces the computers and Keyboard, Video and Mouse (KVM) equipment and reduces cabling on board vessels. The platform can visualise multiple ship's systems on individual screens. Alternatively, a single system can also be selected for display on multiple screens around the vessel, providing a highly flexible systems for operators on board. Alewijnse product manager Johan van

SURVITEC EXPANDS WITH NEW DAVIT RANGE Survitec has used Seawork to publicise its recently launched new range of boat launching davits Engineered with its European-based partner, a company with more than 20 years' experience in manufacturing davits, the Survitec range includes different davit types suitable for liferafts, rescue boats and fast rescue craft. Designed and manufactured in Europe, to European standards and with many elements made using European marine grade stainless steel, the davits have been created to withstand the harsh environments in which they operate. Marine grade stainless steel is known for its resistance to corrosion, which is why key elements have been made from the alloy, including the remote-control function, shackles, securing wires and cover plate. Further protection against corrosion is by way of a three-layer paint system that can adheres to Norway's stringent NORSOK standards developed for the petroleum industry.

Jan De Nul Group is focusing in particular on drop-in biofuel to achieve the ambitious CO2 reduction target. This is a high quality, sustainable replacement for fossil diesel made of vegetable oils and waste flows A grooved drum guides the fall into the correct position and packs it tightly within the drum as the fall is wound up and down during the lifting and lowering of the raft or boat. This ensures that the top layers of the fall wires do not force themselves into the lower layers, avoiding abrasion and possible bights of the wire, thus eliminating any jerking or snatching motions when the liferaft or rescue boat is lowered. The davits are supplied as a fully tested and assembled unit, which can be installed in or out of drydock. Providing the pedestals have been installed and tested, a Survitec technician

can assemble and commission the davit when the ship is in port, reducing the ship's downtime and costs. Survitec also supported Seawork this year through a number of patronage initiatives. It sponsored the drinks reception hosted by the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) and had a strong presence outside the exhibition hall, including branding of the Seawork Harbour Manager's headquarters. Survitec is also ensured the safety of the Seawork Harbour Managers by providing them with Crewfit 150N HF lifejackets which have heavy-duty covers, external reflective tape and indicator windows - making them perfect for use by the team while working on the Seawork pontoons. The company also heavily promoted its new SOLAS 360 and ENERGY 360 single service supplier concepts.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service's new Timm Master 12 Snap Back Arrestor (SBA) acts as an energy absorbing core within the company's Timm Master 12-strand plaited, mixed polymer rope to drastically reduce recoil, or snap-back potential. If the outer, load-bearing construction breaks, the SBA absorbs the snap-back forces, transforming them from a potentially deadly snap, to a much safer, slump. Veronika Aspelund, business manager of ropes at Wilhelmsen Ships Service, said: “The Snap Back Arrestor is a massive step forward in maritime rope safety, significantly mitigating the considerable risks personnel are exposed to during mooring.”

She added: “Using the same material composition as our best-selling premium Timm Master 8 rope, Timm Master 12 SBA is

buoyant, light, reliable, features anti-twist colours and offers one of the best strength-to-weight ratios on the market. These are all of course great selling points, but the safety element hidden within its core is truly unique and could quite literally be a life-saver.” DNV GL verified Wilhelmsen's SBA solution in 2016. Since then the Timm Master 12 SBA has been exhaustively tested, passing both TCLL testing and OCIMF MEG4 tests, in both dry and wet conditions. It is produced according to ISO 9554:2010 and ISO 10556:2009 and tested according to ISO 2307:2010.

LARGER HUMPHREE STABILISERS LAUNCHED Seawork exhibitor Humphree will be introducing a range of larger fin stabilisers to meet the requirements of larger vessels writes Dag Pike Swedish company Humphree has found an expanding market for its fin stabilisers that were developed from experience with interceptors. The range of fin stabilisers was developed to take advantage of the fast-acting electric servo motors that the company had developed to operate their interceptors. The speed of response of the motor is a vital element in any automatic stabilisation systems and Humphree quotes a response time of 0.7 seconds for their servo motors. Fin stabilisers are a relatively new area of activity for the company and they have found a ready market for their products, partly spurred on by the effectiveness of the stabilisers and partly because of the very simple installation. The operating motors are located directly onto the end of the main shaft and by operating on the vessel's 24 volt electrical system there is no requirement for complicated hydraulic pumps and piping.

The speed of response of the motor is a vital element in any automatic stabilisation systems and Humphree quotes a response time of 0.7 seconds for their servo motors Currently the range of stabiliser fins available from Humphree extends to 1 sq.metre and for larger vessels the fins can be doubled up. The new fins planned to be introduced to the market in the next few months will be sized to meet the requirements of larger vessels and in the workboat sector one of the main applications is likely to be for survey and diving

vessels which require a stable platform for their operations. The fins can operate to stabilise the vessel when underway as well as when stopped or operating at slow speed. One of the advantages of the Humphree stabilisers is that the design of the fin has been developed so that its shape can be quickly modified so that it can be adapted to fit closely to the hull shape. The fins can also be fitted to catamaran hulls, located inside the tunnel so that they provide stability both against pitching and rolling and they can also be programmed to operate in conjunction with the Humphree interceptors, an installation that can meet the requirements of transfer catamarans. Humphree is now part of the Volvo Penta Group.

SUCTION BUCKET TRIALS TO REDUCE COSTS Suction bucket foundation system trials for the offshore wind industry are scheduled to start off the coast of Denmark writes Dag Pike Universal Foundation has begun industrialized suction bucket installation tests under a project that is part of the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP). This test programme is being carried out in conjunction with consortium partners Siemens Gamesa, Aalborg University, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier and Offshore Energy. Last year the Danish Energy Ministry allocated €3.8 million to the consortium which aimed to demonstrate how an industrialized suction bucket concept can cut foundation installation costs. The project seeks to lower the cost of foundation construction and installation by 40% to support continued decreases in the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCo E) and to mature the industrialized concept of the suction bucket foundation system towards full commercial scale. With the suction bucket system, the foundation of the wind turbine is shaped like an inverted bucket with an open bottom. When lowered to the seabed, the rim of the bucket engages with the material of the seabed and then the water trapped inside the bucket is slowly evacuated allowing the sea bed material to be sucked up inside the bucket which then sinks into the seabed to provide a firm foundation. The partners have fabricated an 8-metre diameter prototype of the suction bucket foundation and this will be used for the offshore trial installation campaign. The new concept combines the benefits of noise-free installation of the suction buckets with industrialised fabrication methods using coil steel, instead of classical plate steel. This fabrication method was originally developed between Siemens Gamesa and Danish steel specialist Ib. Andresen Industries for application in onshore towers. The lack of noise during the installation will be a considerable benefit compared with the pile-driving systems used for conventional installation that is claimed to affect marine life. Project Manager at Siemens Gamesa, Finn Daugaard Madsen, said, "By applying this innovative fabrication method to suction bucket technology in offshore wind, the steel plate thickness

can be reduced to below 20mm, compared to today's typical thickness of 30-40mm for this type of foundation. This means lower steel costs with higher supply availability."

after-treatment systems with 90 years of experience of designing and building vessels.” The cooperation with Emigreen was fruitful, leading to an in-house designed and developed system which has been tested on multiple test benches. “The resulting Damen Marine NOX reduction system is a

fully certified and type approved IMO Tier III system, reducing NOX emissions by 80% compared with IMO Tier II requirements.” For owners of Damen’s new generation of tugs wanting to switch to IMO Tier III, the process will be straightforward. “You can compare it to what we
