Technology project sees new approach to SAR A new approach to search and rescue in the North Sea using ship’s radar, a drone, a fast rescue boat and a wave prediction system has just been trialled in the North Sea. Damen, Next Ocean and Delft Dynamics have collaborated on the new system; the goal being to test the limits of drone helicopter operations offshore, with the drone and the fast rescue boat launched from a Damen Sea Axe Fast Crew Supply (FCS) Vessel. The partners foresaw that the most challenging part of the project would be launching and landing the drone and boat in rough seas. The wave prediction system uses ship’s radar to map the sea approximately 1 nautical mile around the vessel, enabling the prediction of wave activity accurately for the coming three minutes. “With this we can predict when there will be a window of opportunity to launch the drone and the rescue craft. Take-off and landing of the drone takes just 30 seconds, for example,” explains Albert Rijkens, Damen High Speed Craft Portfolio Manager R&D.

“The wave prediction system makes this approach feasible and safe.” Karel Roozen, Co-Founder of Next Ocean said,”The system is in a state of constant evolution… We gathered information during this trial which will help prepare it to operate at up to 25 knots or even higher speeds, paving the way for a whole new set of additional applications.” This cooperative approach is, according to Albert, the key to innovation. “At Damen we hold the philosophy of ‘collaborate to innovate’. It’s something we have done for years already. Working together with our partners – particularly start-ups with the innovative ideas they are looking to trial – is an excellent way to look at ways in which technology can help our clients make their maritime operations safer, more efficient and more sustainable.” The test was funded by the Dutch Ministry of Defence with support by the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Netherlands Coastguard, paving the way for future use in a wide variety of offshore operations, including search and rescue, fishery inspection, border patrol and humanitarian aid missions.

Protecting boat builders from false warranty claims The continuing drive for more power and performance combined with the rise of shock-mitigating seating as standard fitment, means owners are more easily able to push the limits of a vessel’s potential. Designed for vessel manufacturers who require data for warranty protection or condition-based maintenance, a new version of Dyena’s monitoring system is aimed squarely at manufacturers who want log vessel usage. Dyena OFFSHORE protects the boat builder from warranty claims caused by the vessel being driven beyond the structural limits or the skipper’s skill level. Hull impacts are measured over varying time periods and the results processed through customisable algorithms, allowing the manufacturer to safeguard against false warranty claims by verifying against the stored information. A simple 6 LED ‘traffic light’ type indication,, encapsulated in a low-profile helm display flags the user if they are approaching or exceeding pre-set thresholds, reducing the stress on the vessel whilst encouraging responsible driving.

With internal GPS, automatic calibration and 2-year memory capacity, the Dyena OFFSHORE system continuously monitors the vessel’s usage and performance including recording 3-axis accelerations alongside GPS data. Simple to fit and autonomous in operation, data can be automatically uploaded to the remote server or downloaded on the dockside for immediate analysis. Suitable for all vessel types, current users of Dyena OFFSHORE include the Royal Marines, Sunseeker International, and Whitmarsh RIBs. Stand A43

Transforming pilot boat technology

8 (l-r) Didier Marchand - Pantocarene, Alan Goodchild and Ian Lord - Estuary Services

With the delivery of the UK’s first hybrid cutter and currently no fewer than five ground-breaking vessels under construction, Goodchild Marine is working flat out. The company’s flagship ORC range, hailed for speed, versatility and strength is now being recognised for its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of cutters. The signature pilot boat was designed by Pantocarene and adapted to the UK market by Managing Director Alan Goodchild. The separate, flexibly mounted wheelhouse helps mitigate noise and vibration, thereby increasing pilot and crew comfort, while the minimal drag hull form significantly reduces fuel consumption. A second ORC 136 is due to Estuary Services in spring 2020, the fourth ORC pilot boat ordered after an initial collaboration in 2012 helped to propel the range into the UK. Briggs Marine fourth ORC, a 136, is on its way with a fifth set to go into production shortly. The UK’s first Hybrid pilot boat, combining electric and diesel power, was built in response to The Port of London’s Air Quality Strategy. ‘Leader’ is now in situ with staff training underway, ready for her to enter service. An ORC 121, the first of its size in the UK and built to be

faster and more fuel efficient than previous models, is now in residence at the Port of Lowestoft for owners Associated British Ports. Interest generated at Seawork saw Sedgemoor District Council order a replica for the Port of Bridgwater; due for delivery in spring 2020. The next boat to leave the yard is the Dublin Port Company’s ORC 171, the first export in the range. It will make its maiden voyage in November this year with a showcase trip to some of southern England’s ports before it heads for the Irish Sea. These collective contracts have enabled Goodchild Marine to invest in a 10% increase of staff, the purchase of a CNC router used in the manufacturing process, staff training and investment in the yard to improve energy efficiency. SUMMER SERVICE Wardle Marine Services had a busy summer season, including a number of large installations for Totnes Boat Club, RYA Cymru, Langport Town Council and Fareham Sailing Club. Totnes requested a 28m x 2m pontoon with a 7m x 1m inlet area to ease access as the client had trot moorings and a large flood defence which created difficulties for the users. The first job for WMS was to complete the installation of the 6.5m mooring piles with shore returns. ready for the Rotodock pontoons to be connected. Fender cleats were attached along with pile guides with bespoke rollers. The project also required a custom-made debris barrier to prevent materials floating down the river and getting jammed against the end of the pontoon hence a custom debris deflector was built from galvanized steel and HDPE plastic, which ensured the debris continued downstream. Galvanized steel handrails and dropdown safety ladders completed the project – on time and in budget. Stand VA1

DEDICATED TO SOLUTIONS FOR MARINE, COASTAL AND OTHER CHALLENGING CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTS

Sparkling ICE Congratulations to two members of Seawork and M&CCE Expo supporter ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers). 8 Katy Toms, Chair of the board of ICE South West, has been announced as one of the top 100 Most Influential Women in the engineering sector. The list was produced by board appointments firm, Inclusive Boards, in partnership with the Financial Times. Toms has had a love of engineering since she saw a video about the Falkirk Wheel as a child. She became Chair of the ICE South West board in September 2019. 8 Nerea Palacios, Maritime Structures Engineer at AECOM in Hampshire, has been announced as the winner of the ICE Emerging Engineers Competition 2019. Entitled 'An analysis of flood risk and potential adaptations in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight', Nerea’s paper was based on research from her master’s dissertation at the University of Southampton and assesses the economic damage caused by flooding in Yarmouth and proposes potential innovative measures against flooding. She was applauded by the judges for her positive impact on an international level, and inspiring and motivating others, including coaching young engineers in the workplace and providing support to civil engineering students.

SHORTLISTED FOR ‘ENGINEERING PROJECT OF THE YEAR’ Appointed to undertake design for the construction of a new Ro-Ro jetty structure for Dublin Port Company, Arch Henderson is delighted to announce that the project, part of the multi-million-pound redevelopment of Alexandra Basin, has been shortlisted for 'Engineering Project of the Year' at the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2019. The new jetty provides berthing for two new linkspans and includes all ancillaries to allow effective operation of the facility servicing some of the world’s largest short sea Ro-Ro cargo ferries that run between Dublin and continental Europe. Due to the new jetty being located adjacent to an existing operational Ro-Ro facility, careful collaboration with the contractor and Port was required so that the existing facility could remain operational throughout the works. Through this collaboration, Arch Henderson was able to understand the contractors preferred method of construction and was able to tailor the design to suit this and the Port’s operational requirements. The completed jetty structure is approximately 290m long, provides two new berths comprising nine individual reinforced concrete dolphin pile caps supported on vertical tubular steel bearing piles. The design team was also responsible for design of guide piles to align one new floating linkspan as supplied by Ravestein BV and one relocated linkspan. To ensure a suitable solution was developed, which met Dublin Port Company’s

requirements and suited the contractors preferred construction method, required extensive collaboration with the contractor and our design partners with careful consideration of the geotechnical conditions present versus the berthing and mooring requirements. This led to an innovative ‘flexible’ dolphin solution involving vertical tubular piles supporting a reinforced concrete pile cap and allowed us to meet the Port’s onerous loading conditions and range of vessels whilst still adopting the contractor’s method of preferred construction. Access to the dolphins is by a series of nine interconnecting walkways. These take the form of lattice girder structures prefabricated from steel sections and lifted into place with services for each dolphin suspended beneath. Due to the nature of the ‘flexible’ dolphins, all walkways were designed to accommodate the range of movement in the dolphin structures. This was achieved by designing a pivot connection at one end and a sliding bearing at the other. Arch Henderson was responsible for fully developing all aspects of Dublin Port Company’s initial design brief for a new Ro-Ro jetty. This included, but was not limited to, geotechnical design, mooring and berthing design, structural design, utility design and mechanical and electrical design. Arch Henderson also provided full construction drawings, specifications and 3D BIM model as part of the contract.

MOVING HISTORY Fawley has longstanding significance for Williams Shipping; George Williams, the company’s founder, first began his shipping business just a few miles away in Ashlett Creek 125 years ago. Fawley’s oil-fired power station operated from 1971 to 2013, finally shutting in March 2013, with decommissioning and demolition continuing ever since. Williams Shipping was in action at Fawley recently, helping move the fourth and final turbine rotor. While other components have been dismantled, recycled or disposed of in other ways, this rotor is earmarked to be remain in the area as a reminder of the power station’s historic significance. The 56-ton rotor was lowered down from the structure using the existing lifting frame and positioned onto T170, Williams Shipping new extendable low loader. T170’s 4 axles mean it is able to carry heavier loads than some other trailers, and its low bed made it easy for the 4m tall rotor to clear the building. The rotor’s first journey in 50 years was not long – heavy haulage truck W150 moved it to just outside the building, where it was unloaded onto its new base by Williams Shipping Liebherr crawler cranes. It is expected to be repainted before being moved to its new site. Stand PG125

Sinbad in Shetland TMS (Teignmouth Maritime Services Ltd) is hard at work in the Shetland Islands on the new contract for the Toft Pier development. Built in the 1950s for the Yell ferry service, the pier was rebuilt in the ’70s but became redundant after a new ferry terminal was built in 2000. Drilling operations prior to pile installation were undertaken with the TMS road transportable modular pontoon ‘Sinbad’, with 12m legs and hydraulic spud leg lifters, in action. Despite the challenging weather, the sixth pile gate has now been set up on the seaward side, piles in the first section are now complete and locally-sourced stone fill is being placed at low tide. Currently host to a long reach excavator (to place fill to the seabed), TMS ‘Sinbad’ can comprise up to 5 x 12mx13m pontoons. Aquaculture and fishing boats are set to return to the redeveloped Toft Pier, due for completion in late 2020.

Redevelopment costs of nearly £3m are being funded by Shetland Islands Council with £1m of that covered by a grant from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
