A question mark hangs over whether boot Düsseldorf 2021 will take place according to organisers. Preparations to hold the show are continuing, however, says Petros Michelidakis, show project director, the situation remains changeable regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are prepared, knowing that weather and winds can be unpredictable sometimes and we will reach our destination even under difficult circumstances,” he said. “We are facing an unpredictable situation, I would say even a storm. But boot Düsseldorf is still on course.” He added: “Sometimes during a sailing trip it’s wise to keep the course when you don’t know how strong and from

which direction the wind will blow. This is exactly the point where we are.” The organisers are evaluating the situation each week, with a decision expected early December. Safety and hygiene measures have been put in place, with 600 extra staff - ‘PROTaction’ guides - appointed to ensure infection prevention measures are observed by visitors and exhibitors. Stands will also be checked before the show to make sure they comply with safety requirements, a strategy successfully employed prior to the Caravan Salon show that took place at the same venue in September. boot Düsseldorf is scheduled from January 23 to 31 2021.

Best and worst To quote Princess Yachts’ executive chairman Antony Sheriff, 2020 has seen the best of times and the worst of times. Best of times due to everyone pulling together, adapting to the situation as best they can, supporting and collaborating – often between competing companies that would previously been unheard of. We’ve seen Burger King on social media telling its customers to buy a Big Mac instead of a Whopper, a move that earned it a bunch of plaudits and applause from customers. And we’ve heard how European boatbuilders who were allowed to open earlier than in the UK have given good advice based on their own experiences on how to operate and build boats in a Covid-secure way. However, it’s still the worst of times due to the obvious disruption and drop in business caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and confusion about the regulations. As we enter another lock-down in England, there’s the inevitable misunderstanding about what is allowed and what is not with most facilities including marinas now closed but waterways open and a limited amount of boating allowed something that will inevitably have another impact on our industry. Whenever I speak to anyone on the phone, a key question asked is how everyone else is doing. A question there isn’t a straight answer to. While some companies are experiencing record order books, others are struggling and even laying off staff. However, as businesses continue to adapt through the next chapter, there was a glimmer of good news last week, with organisers still hoping boot Düsseldorf will be able to go ahead - though it won’t be the same show we all know and love. We’ve seen how shows can safely take place and the huge benefit to the industry when they do, Fort Lauderdale being one example. Boat sales in the US, particularly for smaller craft, started taking off in March and early reports from FLIBS exhibitors are good. Although visitor numbers were understandably down – 20% over five days - the show was as safe as it could be and still fun for everyone with most of the visitors keen to part with their cash. Show enhancements and new guidelines were introduced and exhibitors say while there was a different tone to the show, there was also a sense of community. The show showed how much pent-up demand there’s been with people keen to see and touch new products and boats and get out onto the water. We’ve all got used to wearing masks and not hugging and kissing each other and while it’s not the same as before, it’s the next best thing – and if it means a show can still go ahead I’m sure we’ll all make the most of it. We have to keep reminding ourselves there is a light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Oceanic Systems (UK) is experiencing record sales with its largest ever open orderbook, despite the significant damage done to the UK economy from Covid-19 this year. To cope with demand, the company has installed a second Europlacer Finesse pick and place machine at its Hampshire based headquarters. Having two machines, affectionately nicknamed Wilma and Betty, will provide the company with greater flexibility in the manufacturing set up within its production department, allowing for customer demands to be met more efficiently. “Like so many companies earlier this year we went into lockdown and suspended production, but as the orders kept coming in we took steps to ensure we were Covid-secure and restarted production after just a month to fulfil the

backlog that was building up,” said MD, Bruce Coward. “This was well received by our customers and with this quarter's sales orders increasing by 93.8% over the last quarter, Oceanic currently has its largest ever open order book of more than £400k.” He added: “With the success of Poseidon in both the leisure and the commercial marketplaces, in conjunction with exciting new products such as our dedicated Navigation Light Controller, our worldwide

active customers have increased by 21.4% year to date which adds to these figures.” The company has also hired extra team members and has more new products in the pipeline that will increase the capability of the Poseidon system units for larger superyachts with more complex monitoring and control systems and full marine CCTV systems.

WORLD'S 'MOST SUSTAINABLE BOAT' Next year La Belle Verde (LBV) and Innovation Yachts are launching the 'LBV35', said to be the world's most sustainable boat. LBV is a pioneer of the green boating movement, having designed, developed and introduced a fleet of solar powered, emission free vessels since launching in Ibiza 2014. Maarten Bernhart, one of the founders of LBV said it was time for change. “There are currently around 20 million recreational vessels in the EU and USA, all built with highly toxic and nonrecyclable materials. All of these boats will end up on landfills or on the bottom of the sea within the next ten to 20 years,” he said. Having previously focused on reducing emissions by implementing

solar-electric propulsion technology, attention now turns to materials, construction and lifespan. The LBV35 is a 100% recyclable composite boat; even the moulds are made of fully recyclable material and LBV has also committed to a sustainable 'loop' recycling model whereby the company will buy back the composite materials and reuse them for future builds.

Suitable for singlehanded sailing and with a top speed of 22 knots, the LBV35 will be produced in Les Sables d'Olonne in France, home to Norbert Sedlacek's Innovation Yachts. “After 11 years of continuous development with fully recyclable, high end yacht building materials we are happy to become the home of the new LBV35,” said Norbert Sedlacek.

BOAT DIVISION Brands are being overhauled with a reduction from 12 to eight enabling the group to reduce its investment by 30% compared with 2019. Eighteen new models are released this year with others in the pipeline. Sales continue to grow in the dayboating segment, partially offsetting the contraction in charter sales and inboard motorboats. The boat division has adjusted production and five sites have been hibernated, closed or sold and partial activity measures have been rolled out in France and Italy. Groupe Beneteau expects business to be down 25 to 30% year on year due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The figures are part of the boatbuilder's interim financials as at August 31 2020 and show that while the impact of the pandemic remains stark, the results are better than first forecast due to a good level of boating activity once restrictions were lifted in the summer. The group is also benefiting from its diverse business which enables it to offset contraction in certain markets such as charter against growth in others such as outboard. In addition, measures to adapt production capacity and fixed costs in line with market volumes are being rolled out, making it possible to reduce costs by up to 65m Euros on a full year basis.

CYRIL SNARE PASSES AWAY Cyril Snare, the former face of Mermaid Marine engines has died aged 75. Having built his first boat before leaving school, it was no surprise to friends and family that Cyril would become part of the marine industry. From joining Mermaid Marine in 1973 to his retirement in 2010, Cyril shared his love for all things nautical, supplying a range of Ford based diesel engines designed to offer strong performance and reliability to leisure, commercial and military customers. And he combined this with a personal after sales experience, based on his mantra of 'treat people how you would like to be treated'. During his time at the helm, the Ministry of

Defence awarded Mermaid Marine the prestigious AQAP 4 certification for engines up to 400hp, powering more than 100 Pacific 22 RIB's in service with the Royal Navy. Cyril built an international distribution network with Mermaid engines installed in all types of vessels across the globe from the Canadian Maritime Provinces to the Caribbean Islands, Europe, Middle East, Far East and Oceania regions. This was combined with

a domestic market for Mermaid engines, such as powering the Princess 37 as well as many commercial craft; Mermaid Marine enjoyed its place as Ford's leading approved mariniser. Cyril enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly rivalry with Mermaid's competitors, but nothing made him happier than attending boat shows around the globe supporting every part of the Mermaid family, often accompanied by his wife Barbara. He will be sadly missed and a great loss to the industry. His funeral will be held on November 5, with close family and friends present. Donations in Cyril's memory can be made to Dementia UK.

Highfield Boats has launched a new Highfield SPORT collection of rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) for the 2021 model year. The collection introduces 11 new, aluminium-hulled, outboard-powered RIB models ranging from 3m to 8m. Other waterways achieving Green Flag status include the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, a stretch of the Regent's Canal in East London, the Selby Canal, and the Tees Barrage Park.

One hundred miles of waterways across England and Wales have been awarded Green Flag status by Keep Britain Tidy. The new stretches join 300 miles which already hold the quality mark. Amongst the recognised waterways is the Rochdale Canal in Manchester City Centre, which received Green Flag status with improvements including creating cobbled gardens and planters, increased volunteer litter picks, removal of graffiti and the installation of safety equipment. Speaking about the waterways, Julie Sharman, chief operating officer at the Canal & River Trust, commented: “It's more important than ever to

RNLI TO TEST DUROWIPERS DuroWipers has won a contract to test its wipers on the RNLI's Seven class lifeboat. It will be the first time a Severn class will have a DuroWiper system fitted. The RNLI is upgrading its Severn class lifeboat and DuroWiper Class 60 pantographs will be tested on the prototype vessel. If tests prove successful, the wipers will be installed on six boats. “Maintainability and reducing maintenance are key criteria when selecting equipment along with cost, reliability, ruggedness, supplier confidence and any other relevant criteria, dependent on the equipment being supplied,” said Nick Fenwick Severn life extension project manager. DuroWipers has a long-standing partnership with the RNLI having

originally secured a contract to supply 57 RNLI vessels with wiper systems, including the new Shannon class lifeboats, back in 2012. There are currently 44 Severn class vessels in the lifesaving charity's fleet. The vessels first entered service in 1996 and are now approaching retirement age. The upgrades - which include a redesigned wheelhouse - are taking place at the RNLI's centre in Poole, Dorset and are intended to extend the vessels' lives for another 25 years. Initially six of the lifeboats will be upgraded with the first due to undergo sea trials at the end of this year. DuroWipers offers extended and lifetime warranties for its wiper systems.

Brunswick Corporation has outperformed expectation with net sales more than 26% higher than the same period in 2019. The figures from the corporation relate to the third quarter of 2020 and show a strong retail demand is delivering outstanding results. Net sales are at US$1,233.1m, an increase of 26.3% over the same period in 2019 whilst operating earnings have soared by 60.9% to US$192.6m. “Each of our businesses delivered outstanding operating results in the third quarter,” said Brunswick chief executive, David Faulkes. “Our ability to capitalise on very robust retail demand, which was enhanced by expanded boating participation and our compelling portfolio of industry-leading brands, drove excellent financial performance ". All product categories within the boat segment

Failure to resolve tax issues post-Brexit will deliver a significant hit to the UK second-hand boat market and marine industry, warns the RYA and British Marine. Despite HMRC indicating that Returned Goods Relief (RGR) would be incorporated into UK law after 31 December 2020, discussions between the three organisations have confirmed that RGR will only be available for goods returning to the UK which were exported within the past three years. This means that owners whose boats have not been in the UK in the last three years will need to pay VAT for a second time.

However evidence shows nowadays the most influential demographic is women. Kelly Kaylor, director of communications, National Marine Manufacturers Association, points out: “There is likely a combination of factors driving more women to seek out boating. “Women's purchasing power is on the rise and their role as the primary decision-maker on many household purchases, especially related to family leisure spending.” In June, Discover Boating launched the Get On Board integrated marketing campaign in conjunction with Take Me Fishing to help more Americans experience the health and wellness benefits of boating and fishing safely while social distancing. The campaign reached millions of consumers, with data showing younger, more diverse audiences getting on board. DiscoverBoating.com saw a 79% increase in web traffic year-on-year, especially among target audiences like women, up 65%.” Courtney Chalmers, VP marketing, Boats Group, says: “Women are also showing a new level of engagement further down the sales funnel as they contact sellers for more information to evaluate boats for sale. “Leads submitted by women are up 341% over the same four-month period last year.” 8 | NOVEMBER 2020

Exide Technologies' EMEA and Asia-Pacific business has been sold. The battery manufacturer will now operate as a standalone company, separating from Exide Holdings Inc in the US. The business will now be transferred to a group

of long-term shareholders with the business receiving further multimillion-dollar funding from the new investors. The new Exide will be headquartered near Paris and will continue to serve global markets under its brands. It will be managed by

an executive team, led by Stefan Stübing, former president EMEA and APAC region and newly appointed president, CEO and director. In addition, Joe Hinrichs - formerly president of the Ford Motor Company's global automotive business - has been appointed chairman of the board of directors. “Now, as a standalone, we are more agile. It will allow us to react even faster to the wishes of our customers and requirements of the market”, said Stefan. “The new owners represent a group of Exide's longterm noteholders and know us well, thereby demonstrating their continued commitment to our success.”

Sailing and windsurfing have been reinstated for GCSE, AS and A-level physical education (PE) qualifications. The activities have been included in the Department for Education's (DfE) revised activity lists and will be assessed in 2021 for AS-level and 2022 for GCSEs and A-levels. “It's fantastic to see sailing and windsurfing 'officially' reinstated within the PE activity lists,” said Amanda Van Santen, chief instructor of the RYA sailing and windsurfing training schemes. “The RYA has worked closely with AQA (an awarding body) over the last year to develop the specified criteria for assessment, and we're delighted to now see this come into effect.” And she said she hoped the decision will inspire more people to get afloat

The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre responded to 3,800 incidents, rescuing more than 1,900 people in the process. As well as frontline search and rescue, HMC has delivered a number of major projects including making the Channel Navigation Information Service national across its network. Away from HMC, the MCA’s Maritime Regulatory Compliance Team successfully prosecuted ten cases.The report covers the period April 2019 to March 2020.

UK production Arksen’s first Explorer Vessel under its sustainable marine adventure project has gone into production in the UK with sea trials planned for spring 2022. The Arksen 85 Project Ocean is the flagship of the new Explorer Series which also includes the 60 and 75, with larger models in the pipeline. UK south coast businesses are helping to bring the project to life with partnerships with Humphreys Yacht Design, Chartwell Marine and Wight Shipyard Company where the Project Ocean started build earlier this month.

Stable finances Osculati’s latest figures show the company’s financial situation has remained stable, with total revenue at 71 million euros, compared to 72 million in 2019. The company says keeping all its catalogue products in stock has helped to overcome the shortage of supplies and the limitations in transports. The group has further invested in its logistic infrastructure, with a 1.2 million Euro investment approved last spring and currently undergoing. In addition, the company has taken on additional staff over the last 12 months, increasing its direct workforce from 130 in September 2019 to 137 in 2020.

LONDON BOAT NUMBERS DOUBLE How best to manage London's busy waterways is to be discussed with boaters and other stakeholders. Against the backdrop of a record high and growing boat numbers in the capital, the Canal & River Trust is asking what approach should be taken for managing very congested areas, and how respondents can help. Over the past decade the number of boats using the London waterways has more than doubled to a record high. Without additional measures to manage the areas of highest demand, the Trust says it is likely that the ever-growing number of boats will impact on everyone's enjoyment of the waterways. “The rise in boat numbers in some parts of London is unsustainable and is putting Superyacht company Edmiston and training organisation the UKSA have collaborated to launch the Edmiston Foundation to address diversity within the superyacht industry. The foundation will look to provide young people, especially those in the most underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, with the opportunity to forge a career within the maritime industry. Edmiston & Company has provided an initial endowment of £120,000 to deliver training and education opportunities devised and run by the UKSA for more than 200 young people per year. The five-year goal is to raise £ 1m and see 1,200 young people from around the globe complete the course and find a career in the maritime sector. “It is my hope that this new initiative will deliver opportunities to young people from all walks of

SUSTAINABILITY REQUIRES INVESTMENT The installation of 300 shore power mains connection charging sites is just one recommendation for the UK Government from the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) to make boating more sustainable. The infrastructure investment would improve air quality by reducing the emissions from stoves for heating and engines run for charging batteries, as well as enabling a move towards more boats with electric propulsion, says the IWA's Sustainable Propulsion Group. Other recommendations include a national dredging programme across Britain's inland waterways, working with navigation authorities, to make propulsion more efficient.

Failings The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has issued a warning about the dangers of carbon monoxide after the loss of two lives on a motor cruiser. An investigation by MAIB is on-going, however initial findings indicate a number of failings.

Boating numbers and income are up for 2019/20 according to the annual report and accounts published by the Canal & River Trust. The report charts a year when income, volunteering, and spend on the trust’s charitable activities grew to record levels. Income increased by £6.1m to £216.1m and spend on charitable activities increased by £10.9m, with underlying expenditure on maintenance, repairs and infrastructure works continuing to grow.

Cancelled Next year’s Poole Harbour Boat Show 2021 has been cancelled as a result of continued uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic. The show is the largest, free to attend boat show in the UK and attracts more than 32,000 visitors each year. Event organisers, Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC), anticipate the show returning in 2022. The 2020 show was also cancelled.

An overview In a long running case, the Court of Appeal decided in August that three modified crew-cab vehicles that Coca Cola supplied to employees should be classified as cars, not vans, for benefit in kind purposes. Previous tribunal decisions had determined that one of the vehicles could still be considered a van while other two were cars, despite similarities. Coca Cola provided three types of modified crew-cab vehicle to its employees who were allowed private use of the vehicles. The three vehicles in question were a first and second-generation VW Transporter T5 Kombi and a Vauxhall Vivaro. Coca Cola had treated all the vehicles as vans for tax purposes. HMRC argued they were cars. The difference mattered because the benefit in kind charges on the private use by an employee of a van is lower. It is chargeable at a flat rate and can even be nil if the private use is limited. In contrast, the benefit in kind charge for a car can be substantial, no matter how little the private use, as it depends on the list price of the car and its CO2 emissions. The vehicles provided by Coca Cola were all based on a panel van design but with a second row of seats behind the driver - a so called 'crew-cab' vehicle. At the first hearing the Tribunal determined that the Viraro was a van - just - because the available 12 | NOVEMBER 2020

CREW-CAB VANS - A NASTY JUDGMENT FOR ALL allowance, but cars are not. This means that all but the very largest of businesses will generally get the benefit of tax relief on the cost of a van in the year of purchase. The tax relief on the cost of a car by contrast is drip-fed much more slowly.

Some firms use a crew-cab van to help them provide a dual-purpose vehicle that operates as a van by day and a car out of hours. However, a recent tax ruling has effectively nixed this as an idea and will have repercussions for those that have used this form of tax planning in the past.

load space was larger as the fixed seating behind the driver didn't span the full width of the vehicle. However, the Tribunal classed the Kombis as cars - even though the seats spanning the full width of the vehicle were removable, which increased load space. In the Tribunal's view this meant that the Kombis were equally suitable for goods or people. The Court of Appeal decided that all the vehicles it considered were cars for tax purposes - none were primarily more suitable for carrying goods than passengers. Implications for employers and employees There are now two areas of concern. Firstly, businesses must ensure that any new or existing vehicles are treated correctly going forwards. Although the Court of Appeal decision could be appealed, it is binding for now. Secondly, businesses must also look back to see if they need to make any

amendments to previous returns where they have treated as vans crew-cab vehicles which are similar to those in the Coca Cola case which might now be considered a car. Even where businesses are happy that they have classified vehicles correctly in the past, they should make sure they have evidence of their reasons in the event that HMRC opens an enquiry. But if HMRC opens an enquiry and concludes that vehicles have been misclassified as vans when they should be treated as cars there is potential extra tax for both the employee and employer. The employee is at risk of additional income tax demands on increased value of the

benefit in kind they have received, and for the employer there is both the risk of additional employers' national insurance on any understated benefitsin-kind and potentially, more tax to pay if capital allowances have been over-claimed. Capital allowances Businesses should also look at how they have treated the vehicles for capital allowances purposes; the definition of a van for these rules is very similar to the one considered in Coca Cola for benefit in kind purposes. The big difference between vans and cars for capital allowances purposes is that vans are eligible for the annual investment

VAT The other area where businesses have to take care is with VAT as it can usually be recovered on the purchase of a van while it is generally blocked on a car's purchase. Just to complicate matters, the definition of a car for VAT purposes is different to the definitions considered above. Any vehicle which can carry a payload of one tonne or more is not considered a car for VAT purposes, even if it has seats behind the driver. On this basis, a crew-cab that can carry a big enough load may still be treated as a van for VAT purposes, even if it doesn't meet the definition of a van for benefit in kind or capital allowances purposes. An alternative to consider is a double cab or dual-cab pick-up. These too have seats behind the driver but, instead of an enclosed load space behind, there is usually a flatbed loading bay. HMRC accepts that if double-cab pick-ups meet the payload test, then it will apply the same treatment for benefit in kind purposes as well. Conclusion While some firms will legitimately be very proactive when it comes to tax planning, all need to take good tax advice before buying.. 8 Helen Thornley is a technical officer at the ATT

QR codes help alert owners to problems Nautical ID has unveiled a simple, user-friendly solution for alerting owners that there is a problem with their boat. Until now, Nautical ID says there has been no easy way to let an owner know that there is a problem, particularly as data protection laws prevent marinas sharing contact details. Sam Reid, Nautical ID MD and a keen sailor, spoke of his own experience when he was sailing home a newbuild boat. “Stopping in Lowestoft for a break we moored securely and went for breakfast,” he said. “While in the café we overhead some locals laughing about a 'few idiots who had moored their boat clearly ignorant of local tidal conditions'. Racing back to the boat, we discovered it hanging by its mooring lines, about to snap, with the water having dropped some 5ft." The system, invented in Sweden and now launching in the UK and internationally, uses decals fixed to the stern and bow featuring QR codes that can be read by smart phone and link directly to the boat's information page. GENOA FURLING IS SIMPLIFIED Barton Marine's new Stanchion Lead Block with Cleat is designed to simplify the control of a genoa furling line from the cockpit. The product has been developed to enable a genoa line to be pulled in and cleated off in one simple action. It is mounted to a pushpit stanchion at the back of the yacht and in conjunction with Stanchion Lead Blocks along the length of the hull, the furling line is kept tidy and away from the main control lines. Harken has shown its new products for 2020-2021 including sail accessories, a new non-abrasive grip tape and a range of pneumatic vangs. Harken Marine Grip is a thin, durable non-abrasive grip tape which the company says in testing has shown to improve both wet and dry footing. Available in back, grey or white, it comes in 60ft rolls, strips of multiples sizes and hexagon-shaped pieces. A new Ocean edition for cruisers has been added to Harken’s MKIV furlers. There is also a new integral hydraulic backstay adjuster to adjust mast tension and optimise sailshape. The adjusters come in four sizes to fit boats from 30 to 60ft. Another hydraulic offering is Harken's new FlatWinder powered block for mainsheet traveller adjustment. The company will also begin distributing VangMaster's lightweight, adjustable pneumatic vangs which use air pressure to hold the boom up while the mainsail is stowed. Made of 6061 T6 aluminium, the vangs have hardcoat anodised tubing and end fittings that help reduce corrosion.

The end of the Brexit transition period is nearing and it’s likely that all UK companies will be affected. Preparation is key – the issues are complex. When preparing our supporting information, it’s impossible for British Marine to anticipate every scenario across our sectorial activity, so we need members to proactively engage with us for support. That’s exactly British Marine’s unique role, exclusively supporting members in this way. To provide some focus, we’ve collated many of the areas in six key themes, spanning VAT, customs, border controls, people and employment, data protection, products and certification. We have been drawing members’ attention to these through a member-only microsite and running webinars. As a trade association, it is our job to respond in this way and represent the industry. British Marine has been recognised for this and our work through lockdown and COVID-19 with a nomination in the Outstanding Achievement of the Year category of the British Yachting Awards 2020. Yanmar has introduced its SD15 saildrive solution for larger sailboats with engines from 80hp to 150hp. Aimed at the 50 to 65ft monohull and multihull sector, the SD15 is already successfully installed on a Sunreef 50 following field testing on a Kufner 54. The SD15 saildrive, made by ZF, can be coupled to Yanmar’s 4JH80, 4JH110 and 4LV150 common rail engines, offering an option to sailboats and catamarans using higher horsepower engines that have previously relied on conventional drive lines. The saildrive has been developed to have lower vibration and onboard noise, lower drag, improved propulsion efficiency and

fuel consumption together with hydrodynamic efficiency and increased comfort while motoring. Additional features include hydraulically actuated multi-disc clutches, an integrated output shaft brake and the ability to match with a Flexofold foldable propeller. For smaller sailboats, the SD60 saildrive, with mechanical clutch, is currently available, custom engineered to match the 3JH40, 4JH45, 4JH57 and 4JH80 engines. The SD15, in combination with the 4JH80 and 4JH110, will be available from Q1/Q2 next year, with the introduction of the 4LV150 option scheduled at a later stage.

The new electrics case records engine data and compares it with predetermined target values. In the event of a departure from target values, an integrated alarm system triggers either a warning, an alarm or a reduction procedure in order to protect the engine. The iSea electrics case also has CAN 1939 connection which allows users with requirements greater than the standard iSea 5” or 7” display to connect to larger displays instead. FLUSH DOOR HANDLE IS SUITABLE FOR SLIDING DOORS Davey & Co has spent the last few months developing several new products including two new Flush Door Handles. The products are made in the UK from cast and polished brass. They are available to have a lock or just a square latch bar and will work with standard locks that Davey has available from stock and spacings. “This is ideal when a flush fit handle is needed in sliding doors or where catching ropes, clothing or equipment is an issue,” explained Davey & Co MD, Jeff Webber. The handles both measure 70mm in width and 146mm and 102mm in length respectively. Both need a rebate depth of 16mm. They are also available in chrome on brass. In addition, the company has a new Brass Spreader Light made from solid brass

spun cups that will work with 12-24V DC electrics with high powered 27W light power. The light will complement an existing deck light, and are also suitable for a larger yacht, which requires a higher power output and a wider more generic beam pattern. These lights, although designed for mounting on spreaders can be used elsewhere on a boat where high levels of light are required. They have an IP69K rating for waterproofing.

Ronstan has been rolling out new products over the year, adding to its range of lashing and high load blocks with high load to weight. New soft attachment blocks are said to achieve the highest ratings for dynamic load versus sheave diameter in Ronstan's keelboat block range, says Jason Belben of Ronstan suppliers SailTek. The SA blocks incorporate a full contact, self-lubricating composite journal bearing running on a stainless steel hub to reduce friction under load. Thrust washers are positioned between the sheave and cheek plates to handle high side loads, and testing has shown this to be more effective than ball bearings. With a Dyneema SK99 cord shackle and titanium dog bone, the blocks are suitable for applications such as 2:1 main halyards, headsail and spinnaker sheets, mast base halyard deflection and running backstays. Ronstan has released the RF35109HL 30mm lashing block for high load applications such as high load vang purchase systems on Moth and Lasers, halyards on skiffs, cunninghams, outhauls and backstay purchase systems. With a maximum line of 8mm, the block has a maximum working load of 550kg and a breaking load of 1650kg. The hub can also double as a becket take off point. NEW WING CLEAT HAS VERY LOW PROFILE The Aqualine Wing Cleat Mk II is one new addition to the C-Quip deck hardware range. “Cast in 316 stainless steel and hand polished to a mirror finish it represents the exceptional level of quality that can be expected from C-Quip,” explained Lily RossSmith, field sales manager. Harken has a range of new deck hardware products for 2020-2021 including new winches, fly block and a new line of Gizmos. The latest addition to the current range of fly blocks is the 18mm Triple Fly block, suitable for rigging outriggers, dredgers and teasers. Made of composite fibre-reinforced sideplates together with stainless steel inner race, rivet and ball bearings, it is specifically designed to have a high strength-to-weight ratio. Harken is also offering a new line of Gizmos, its growing range of engineered soft-attach terminations and throughdeck pieces comprising single and double-sided through-deck bushings, loops and padeye kits. Red Flag Registrations is urging boat owners to ensure they have a printed version of their Certificate of Registry to avoid being caught out by stricter border controls following the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December. With the UK's exit from the European Union, boat owners travelling to the continent are likely to face bureaucracy and delays, warns Phil Cornick, director of Red Flag Registrations. “It is highly likely that the Europeans will understandably be applying rigorous border formalities to UK boat owners arriving in their waters,” said Phil. “The days of making that instant decision to 'pop across the channel for a plate of moules' look numbered." MOVE TO DIGITAL The Maritime and Coastguard Agency is changing its operations to a digital platform and will no longer be supplying a physical Certificate of Registry but instead will be issuing an e-certificate incorporating a QR code via email. Phil is urging boat owners to print a copy of the certificate ahead of travelling and not rely on inadequate phone signals. “Do not make the mistake of hoping you can remember which file you stored the email in or that your phone will be charged and receiving a good data signal,” he said. “Print your certificate the moment you receive it and keep a physical copy on board at all times.” Red Flag Registrations will continue to provide and laminate a copy of the Certificate of Registry for boat owners' convenience and peace of mind. 24 | NOVEMBER 2020

PLANNING GRANTED FOR NEW FOREST MARINA Marina Projects has designed a dry stack facility, marina berthing and marine employment proposals for the Fawley Waterside scheme. Marina Projects also provided advice that included marine leisure market research and masterplan support. The automated dry stack facility is designed to sit at the heart of the development creating a focal point and animation of the waterspace. The facility will see two separate sheds and an automated launch and recovery system providing berthing for up to 600 vessels typically around 7-11m in length. A particular influence on the design and key consideration was the potential for utilising the existing dock and power station basement, explained Mike Ward Marina Projects MD. MARINE EMPLOYMENT This provides the potential for creating an extensive protected basin area - and a canal that will serve the marine employment site.

INSTANT YACHT INSURANCE FROM TOPSAIL Topsail Insurance has introduced a quote and buy facility, allowing customers to buy their policy online. The new service is similar to that found in other classes of insurance such as the motor industry and allows customers to receive instant quotes. “Usually people fill a form and then receive a quote back from ourselves,” explained Nigel Hawkes, director of operations at Topsail. “However, people want quotes instantly and don't want to wait. It's

quite a leap forward and we're really excited to be launching this to the wider boat owning public.” And he explained that while the team welcomes the opportunity to talk to clients, for some time now, there has been an increasing trend for clients to interact online. The company is finding increased demand in the smaller end of the market, particularly in the 20 - 30ft range of boats, particularly noticeable during the Covid-19 pandemic as

more people buy used boats instead of going abroad on holiday. A-Plan Commercial Marine Insurance has experienced a very busy 2020 with a much greater volume of enquiries from clients. The specialist marine broker has taken on three new starters in the last six months to cope with the increased new business demand from clients and diversification internally as clients' needs are supported. “The unprecedented circumstances in March showed a 25% increase in client contact with questions on how to reduce premiums, how is the industry coping and how to ensure cover with serious diversification away from traditional marine business,” said A-Plan branch manager Malcolm Stewart. “My team worked long hours reviewing clients' sums insured to reflect the 'new normal' and with a couple of key insurers, were able to refund premiums as the risk profile changed. This required reviews every three months, but our clients benefited from better cash flow.” Malcolm added: “The business has certainly seen some changes and although we are back working in our office - socially distanced the lessons learned in lockdown are not far away; significantly increased communication, ensuing clients are looked after with an advice-based approach - we offer clients options at renewal - and a proactive approach to client welfare.” NOVEMBER 2020 | 25

'A' rating is confirmed

Ratings agency Standard & Poor has affirmed the UK P&I Club's 'A' rating. In doing so S&P has confirmed the UK Club's capital as being 'very strong' and at the 'AAA' level on its capital model. However, the agency has amended the outlook from stable to negative, stating that protection and indemnity clubs are facing a high number of claims this year. The directors' report for the year ending February 20 2020 stated that although the year ended in a $54m surplus, thanks to a strong investment result, premium rates have been falling across the P&I market for several years and are no longer sufficient to cover the associated claims and expenses. The report states that it remains critical that the UK Club continues to focus on underwriting discipline and careful risk selection.

Marine finance lender, Promarine Finance has seen a 30% year-on-year increase in the number of finance deals from April to the end of September 2020. Promarine Finance offers fixed rate marine mortgages for new and used RIBs, motorboats, sailing yachts and canal boats over periods of two to ten years with the biggest demand driven by motorboat and RIB finance. The lender has also seen a 68% year-on-year increase in the number of motorboat mortgages and 117% yearon-year increase in finance deals for RIBs from March to the end of September this year. Charity launched to extend reach The Nautical Institute (NI) has launched The Nautical Institute Foundation charitable initiative that will allow it to extend the scope and reach of current activities. The Foundation will aim to improve standards in maritime safety and marine environmental protection. “We identified the benefits that could arise from a separate charity focusing on maritime safety initiatives that would attract potential donors keen to support such projects but only via a separate charity,” explained NIF chief executive Jonathan Stoneley. The Foundation will also look at training and accreditation in maritime industries which are currently unregulated, focussing on less developed safety cultures and standards. 26 | NOVEMBER 2020

Growing up sailing on Chichester Harbour, Jonny Boys, now MD of the Trafalgar Group, always had a strong desire to get more people boating and make it easier to do so. This has stayed at the heart of his business life. Leaving school at 16, his parents encouraged him to do what he loved as long as he paid his way - so he became a marine entrepreneur. When the British Navy sold its surplus RIBs, he saw an opportunity to set up his first business (JBT Marine) buying, restoring and selling RIBs, which led to him setting up RIBsForSale.com, one of the first specialist online brokerages. Subsequently, he purchased the entire fleet of more than 50 ex-Camel Trophy RIBs, which he refurbished and sold worldwide. CREATING OPPORTUNITIES From here, a recurring pattern of regeneration and revitalisation began. In 2002 Jonny acquired Thornham Marina, at the top of Chichester Harbour, then in considerable disrepair with many dumped vehicles and boats - the day he arrived he remembers a crash as an engine fell through the hull of a boat. Since then, Thornham has been transformed, with state-of-the art lifting equipment, modern facilities, pleasant surroundings, secure boat storage and berthing. The most recent innovation being the development of the ARK900's, bijou, boutique boats for people to book for overnight or short breaks to experience life on the water. On a trip to Florida during the 90s, Jonny discovered the Drystack system of boat storage

and taken with the idea of hassle-free launching and storage, he decided to build and develop the concept in the UK. TAKING RISKS In September 2008, with the UK economy in freefall, Jonny acquired the long-term derelict Vosper Thornycroft site in Portsmouth Harbour. Despite being told he was crazy, over time, Jonny and his team have transformed it into one of the largest indoor Drystack facilities in Europe, able to house more than 400 boats with guaranted launching with one hour's notice. The upside was a large shed; the downside was a large number of derelict buildings, offices and even houses on the site. Jonny recalls the first day, with a colleague sitting in a cold, damp office, the only people on the 24-acre site, wondering how this new venture would work out. Undeterred, with the experience of Thornham behind him and drawing on his marine industry knowledge, Jonny and his team set about an astonishing business and community regeneration project. The original tidal

dock and approach channel were dredged and turned into a sheltered boutique marina for leisure boats and the slipway was cleared, enabling the site to offer shoreside boat storage. JBT Marine (now RIBs For Sale) moved there and the site was renamed Trafalgar Wharf. By this time Jonny had also bought the rights to Ballistic RIBs, a highperformance RIB brand he had personally tested out by racing in the brutal TransAgulhas race in South Africa, commonly recognised as the world's toughest RIB event. COMMUNITY REGENERATION Individual office rooms were renovated and rented on easy-in/easy-out terms for small businesses. With support from Portsmouth City Council, the 16 houses were renovated for the local housing association. Commercial units were cleaned up and let to marine tenants and over time new production units were constructed for Magma Global, a major tenant. The site is now home for many marine businesses. One of the most important developments for Portsmouth Harbour and the marine community was the renovation of the

old Vospers Shiplift. With no facility like it in the area, the 1,000-ton Rolls Royce Syncrolift was reconditioned 12 years ago and provides lift out facilities for commercial vessels and superyachts. ACCESSIBLE BOATING In 2015, still very aware that boating was far from accessible for many people, Jonny pioneered Boat Club

LESSONS LEARNED The older he gets the more Jonny says he realises what he doesn't know: “I've learned never to be afraid to question a proposed solution to truly understand if it is the best way forwards - because sometimes it just isn't. I've discovered many specialist professionals are taught to think using a process, which is great, but it doesn't always lead to the optimum answer to a unique problem.” His motto is always to be fair and efficient and follow the words of Maya Angelou: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Aine joins Brunswick after spending the past 20 years in a variety of executive positions within the automotive industry and in leadership positions at major global consulting firms. Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC) has appointed Miles Carden as its new CEO, to take up the post in January 2021. Miles will join FHC from the Spaceport Cornwall project at Cornwall Council, where he secured inward investment from Virgin Orbit. Prior to this he was enterprise zone manager for the Aerohub at Cornwall Airport Newquay. He is a chartered surveyor with a background in economic development and project delivery in both the public and private sector In his new role he will be responsible for managing in excess of 16 square miles of harbour area and steering the business arms of FHC - Falmouth Pilot Services and Falmouth Haven. “I am delighted that Miles will be joining FHC as our new chief executive,” said Carrie Gilmore, chair of FHC. “He comes with an exceptional and diverse skill set, which means he is well placed to lead FHC and create a new and exciting vision for our future.” FHC is the statutory body responsible for managing the Trust Port of F almouth Harbour. Richard Snow has joined Oceanic Systems (UK), manufacturer of alarm, display and control systems for leisure and commercial vessels, as production and quality manager. Richard brings more than 25 years' experience in electronics manufacturing and quality control, holding production management roles in electronic companies from specialists in surveillance equipment for security and military applications to large commercial and industrial equipment suppliers. He will be responsible for managing the production department and staff and ensuring that products going out to customers are of the highest quality. “My focus is to bring a lean and efficient way of production, working smarter not harder. I hope to help the company grow through supplying Oceanic Systems' high-end products combined with outstanding quality and reliability for our customers,” he said.

Declan formerly worked at Marlow Ropes as sales representative since 2018 and during this time has had great success, thanks to his knowledge and previous roles as a rigger. “My time at Marlow has hugely increased my knowledge of fibre running rigging in all its applications.
