Organisers, British Marine (BM), say the show will have a larger footprint than previously – 3,000sqm larger than last year - covering 70,000sqm with around 550 exhibiting brands and 650 craft. “Bookings for the 2022 show have been phenomenal,” said Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine. “We’re nearly at capacity, even with an enlarged footprint both on land and on the water.”

This year sees the return of chandleries including Force 4 and Jimmy Green, after their absence last year and there’s an increase in sailing holiday companies exhibiting. The newly introduced Watersports Zone has almost doubled in size with BM trialling a five-day opportunity for smaller exhibitors in this segment. 8 This year’s show takes place from 16-25 September. This month, Hannah Mills OBE and Sir Ben Ainslie –the most successful female and male Olympic sailors to date - launched the Athena Pathway Programme, a platform for female and youth athletes to fast-track their development in professional sailing – including into the America’s Cup and SailGP.

Top level events are starting to address the issue. For instance, the Paris 2024 Olympics will have an equal number of men and women competing in an equal number of events for an equal number of medals.

Initiatives such as the new Athena pathway are to be commended, but it’s also clear that more events are needed where male crews have to find some women to race with them or they won’t get to race and build their experience.

As Hannah points out, the professional side of sailing, particularly high-performance foiling sailing, is far from where it needs to be, despite the lack of physical barriers.

Group Beneteau’s Boat Division saw almost 3% growth in the first half of 2022 with revenues of €548.2m. However, the growth was held back by supply chain disruption, particularly in the first quarter, with around 600 finished boats not able to be shipped and therefore billed as of June 30 2022 - equivalent to the level from March 3, 2022. The deliveries of these will be deferred to the second half of the year, with more than €80m of billing deferred - around 15% of the Boat division’s first-half revenues. “The boat and leisure home markets have continued to perform very well,” explained Bruno Thivoyon, CEO. “The disruption affecting supply chains slowed our rate of growth during the first half of the year, with nearly €80m of billing deferred to the second half of the Revenuesyear.” for the Motorboat business represent 57% of the Boat division’s revenues for the first half of 2022, supported by the dayboating segments of motorboats up to 40ft. In Europe, revenues contracted by -7.7%, as a result of the disruption to supply chains, which affected large units in particular, as well as the rationalisation of the brand portfolio – notably Monte Carlo Yachts and CNB Yachts, which were recording

The boatbuilder intends to begin production in September 2023 with an initial 50 people employed. Within three years, the boatbuilder expects the site will employ up to 800 people. It is understood the site will be geared towards the construction of the Sunreef 50, Sunreef 60 and 60 Sunreef Power, as well as certain models of the new Sunreef Explorer range - the Sunreef Explorer 65, Sunreef Explorer 80 and Sunreef Explorer 100. In addition, it is also understood the boatbuilder has leased a second industrial site in Dubai, to produce its 40ft dayboat, the 40 Sunreef Power.

When I asked Fi Morgan, SailGP’s director of purpose and impact why there were not more female sailors, I was told they don’t have experience of highperformance foiling boats.

World Sailing recently carried out an international survey with the result that 80% of the female and 56% of the male respondents believing gender balance is anAndissue.the gender gap is not just on the water, much needs to be done shore side as well, starting in schools across the Levellingcountry.theplaying field for women and girls, and increasing their participation in sailing, will require all of us to make changes. Women and girls and para-athletes need to be given the same opportunities and support as their male and able-bodied counterparts otherwise it will be many more years before there is true equality.

More needs to be done

Over the years there have been many strides forward when it comes to both gender equality and disability inclusion in sailing. But much still remains to be done to eliminate the disparity.

Opportunities for a more diverse participation need to be created – but how to do this is not always straightforward a and there are inevitably pros and cons.

600 BOATS UNABLE TO BE SHIPPED

We’ve just seen Para events incorporated in the Commonwealth Games and next year for the first time, Para World Sailing events will be included in the Sailing World Championships. But initiatives at these top levels can only build on what is happening at ‘grass routes’ levels.

A fair point - until one female six-time round the world sailor pointed that many of the male athletes didn’t have experience prior to joining their respective crews. Needless to say, she would have loved to have had a go but wasn’t being given the opportunity.

At present, SailGP has a rule stating that there must be one female athlete on each of the foiling boats F50s.

How I got into this industry... After I finished my degree at Portsmouth University I visited the Southampton Boat Show in 2011 with the aim of making some connections to find a role within the marine industry. My dad has been a sailmaker for most of his life so we were talking with various suppliers and one of those was Ian Clark who at the time was working for Kayospruce. Ian suggested getting in contact with Graham Brown the MD at Sea Sure as they had an opening for a sales person. After a couple of phone conversations and an interview, Graham offered me the position and I started my relocation from Essex down to the South Coast. Best advice I’ve ever received... Do what you enjoy One thing the industry needs less of is... Irrelevant exhibitors at boat shows. Sometimes I wonder if I’m at a boat show, an outdoor furniture show or a men’s underwear show. figures include the dismantling of more than 1,100 boats that have been collected from sailing clubs since a partnership was signed with the French Sailing Federation in 2020, with APER undertaking to finance the transport and processing of old school boats. “The wrecks, dilapidated hulls and scattered sucker boats on our banks and shores, our gardens, our marinas, are not inevitable,” said Jean-Paul Chapeleau président de l’APER. “Get rid of, deconstruct, recycle and recovering pleasure boats at the end of their life, this is the mission that APER has set itself, under the impetus of the Federation of nautical industries.”Theorganisation works to help boatbuilders and owners from the concept and design including choice of materials through to production and then the end of life of the boat. The organisation covers boats from 2.5m to 24m that are registered in France. There are 26 dismantling centres across the country.

The Centre estimates there are around six million boats in the EU, 95% of which are made of GRP. Of these, figures show around 2,000 are recycled when they reach the end of their useful life and between 6,000-9,000 are abandoned. It costs an estimated £7060 for a 7m (23ft) boat, rising to more than £1,300 for 10-12m (33-39ft) and up to £13,00 for boats over 15m (50ft) long. Around 55,000 tonnes of GRP waste is produced from the UK marine sector every year, with the level expected to increase by 10% per year. The technology focus for the Blue Composites Project is the DEECOM process, developed by B&MOriginallyLongworth.designed to remove waste polymer from plastics filters and production equipment, the process uses pressurised superheated steam, to penetrate microscopic fissures in the composite’s polymer.Itisestimated the opportunities for the UK supply chain in a global end-of-life componentcompositesmarketare in excess of £2bn per annum.

In partnership with Aggreko, provider of mobile modular power, the Plymouth event was also provided the largest solar array SailGP has ever used, enabling the race village to be 100% powered by clean energy. The event also displayed bio-methanol fuel as an energy source at a live event. Other initiatives included agreements with RS Electric, Evoy and Vita, as part of SailGP’s target to power its entire on-water fleet by clean energy by 2025. However, as Fi points out, there is still a long way to go. SailGP’s LiveLine feature showing course boundaries and distances on the water, communications and umpire decisions all have one feature in common –that of data. Each of the competing F50 foiling catamarans taking part in the sailing championship have 30,000 sensors fitted to a variety of components, feeding live data from the racecourse to a centre in London in milliseconds due to a partnership with Oracle. And what makes SailGP different to many worldwide sporting events is that all the competing teams have access to the same data and onboard technology. “The technology on the boats is the same, meaning any new teams coming in don’t have to start at the beginning,” explained Warren Jones, director of technology at SailGP. “From the rudder differential to the pressure on the foils, there’s so much information that we process. All the teams have access to the same data, real time data; the only difference between the teams and boats is the athletes on board. “Our goal is to give as much technology to the athletes as possible, for them to go out and go faster. They can analyse how a successful tack was made for example.”

THE INDELICATE MATTER OF PAY

Setting pay As to how pay is set depends on the business. In unionised industries, pay is negotiated between the employer and the union, and this is why we are suddenly seeing a return to strike action when these negotiations are not byandnegotiatedbusinesses,successful.Innon-unionisedpayisrarelywithemployeesisusuallydeterminedthemanagingdirectoror CEO in smaller businesses, and by businessescommitteesremunerationinlargerandplcs. These committees have the job of benchmarking pay both externally, in the market; and internally, between staff operating at the same levels. Should employers link pay rises to productivity? Linking pay rises to productivity is already used in some sectors, whether that be piecework or team or company performance. However, at the moment, even when businesses are outperforming their previous results, it may still be difficult to give substantial pay rises, given that recession is likely to be Salarylooming.sacrifice is one idea that can present real advantages for all by offering a tax and National Insurance efficient way of purchasing items such as bikes and cars and making pension contributions. This can definitely be a better option for employers than a pure pay increase, but it’s not suitable for all employers. Employers have to think about what happens if an employee leaves part-way through the repayment term, and salary sacrifice can’t reduce pay to below national minimum wage levels. Industrial action Strikes and ‘work to rule’ can cause severe disruption to business operations and have a knock-on effect on supply chains; for example, where production is slowed or deliveries can’t be accepted, an employer may breach the terms of its contracts with customers. Employee relations issues can also expose the business to negative publicity. Recent wellpublicised examples of action taken by unions include the RMT successfully balloting for industrial action by rail workers.Ifcollective bargaining agreements are in place, employers should make sure they are followed and fully exhausted in order to try to avoid industrial action. However, even with the best will in the world, it may not be possible to avoid industrial action altogether. How such action should be handled depends on whether the action is lawful (authorised and endorsed by a union) or unlawful (where employees take matters into their own hands). Where action is unlawful, options can include obtaining court orders to prevent an unlawful strike and considering whether disciplinary action against participating employees, including possible dismissal, is appropriate. It’s also important for employers, if industrial action is threatened, to consider contingency planning - the business may need to re-deploy nonstriking employees from other parts of the business based in other locations to cover the work of striking

Employers and employees are under the cosh from rising costs. And given the inflationary pressures all are experiencing, pay is a subject that isn’t going away any time soon, writes Lucy Gordon. But how a request for a pay rise is received by an employer depends on where they are at in their usual pay review cycle, the industry in which they operate, and the extent of theMostcompetition.employees expect an annual pay increase at least in-line with inflation which is currently running at its highest rate in 40 years. It’s entirely understandable that employers can’t afford to offer 9% or 10% pay increases at the moment, particularly given that employers face national insurance contributions onManytop. employees are seeing in the region of 4% to 5% awarded, which is well below the current rate of inflation. This means that employees are earning less, so employers need to be inventive about what they can offer to staff that eases the strain on income but costs them less too. There are some really novel ideas that tick other boxes as well, such as corporate discounts on energy-saving devices, electric cars and solar panels for home offices.

placatingmightunionised,workforceemployees.Ifanon-unionisedseekstobecometheemployerwanttoconsidersta ff by agreeing to an informal request for voluntary recognition which might give the employer more scope to determine the remit of the union. The ‘Big Quit’ effect Some sectors are in the middle of one of the biggest talent wars for years, with employees jumping ship for more money. But the pandemic forced some to re-evaluate their working priorities; some want to work less or from home, others remain loyal to an employer who supported them through the pandemic. Regardless, employers need to balance their offering to employees. Benefits such as flexitime, extra holiday entitlement or even unlimited annual leave, free breakfasts or lunches and employee discounts can all go a long way to improving the employee experience without increasing salary overheads. Some employers are looking more at employee health and wellbeing with support for mental health, new parents and carers and key issues for women in the workplace. Working extra hours Another option is for overtime, but unless it is expressly stated in a contract of employment, employees don’t have a right to overtime. Overtime is usually offered by an employer, and depending on the contract, the employee might be compelled to work it, or might be able to decline the offer. Overtime can be paid at enhanced rates, but this again depends on the contract. The only statutory requirement is that employees receive at least the national minimum wage on average for all hours worked or treated as worked. Overtime can be a good solution if employers have such work available.

This material has the same properties as a moulded non-skid and is more durable than EVA foam non-skid.” He added: “Figuring out how to design a resin system that was flexible yet hard enough to match the gelcoat surface of a boat was key. “It’s both a chemistry and manufacturing issue.” The product is available in sheets of 1ftx1ft up to 4ft x 12ft can be cut to the size required using shears or by using a CNC machine. The Aerocet is a further development on Maguire’s Exocet Moth. “The level of knowledge that Wessex Resins make available is already really impressive yet, on top of this they will also run test pieces as well which is another way that they help us to feel confident about what we’re building,” said Simon Maguire, Maguire Boats MD. “Part of the Exocet’s success is that it is such a reliable boat and having a strong relationship with your supplier is so important.”TheAerocet has been under development since 2020 when Simon asked Kevin Ellway, designer of the Exocet to design a next generation Moth with no holds“Thebarred.result is a very radical conceptual design code,” said Kevin. “The shape has been optimised using computational fluid dynamics for the least flying aerodynamic drag –this is predicted to lead to some large speed gains, especially upwind.” He added: “The boat has been designed as a complete package from foils to sail. The construction, build and even the rig is novel – this is not just a boat without a foredeck. It is more revolution than evolution.”

We Explore represents an enormous technical challenge. In addition to the deck, the forward watertight bulkheads and certain floors were also targeted. As a result, more than 40% of the Outremer 5X was laid up with flax fibres. Some of the foam was recycled and all the flax was sourced in France and woven by the Normandy cooperative Terre de Lin. “Our initial idea was to work with various types of fabric in order to optimise weight, but in the end we opted to use just one, a quadriaxial cloth, to simply the building process,” said César Hardelay, architect supervising the build on behalf of VPLP’s Cruising Division. “To obtain the same rigidity, the flax has to be thicker and is therefore harder to infuse at each mould irregularity. The operators had to be pretty creative and the knowledge they acquired is going to be a precious asset when working with this material in the future.”

The Biaxial Flax Fibre Fabrics are available in aerial weights of 400 and 600gsm, with tests carried out by the boatbuilder and manufacturer showing fewer layers are needed to give the same or better mechanical properties than glass or carbon fibres. “We developed our BiAx range because, as professional boatbuilders with extensive experience in natural fibre composites (NFC), we were missing this product in the market,” said Jan Paul Schirmer, co-MD, GREENBOATS.“Existingfabrics first of all did not have sufficient quality – too many gaps; using twisted rowings. The Neo 570c racer-cruiser has been designed to be the latest game-changer on the Mediterranean Grand Prix sailing circuit. The idea for the 570c first began when Paolo Semeraro and the team at Neo Yachts in Bari, Italy realised that the boat he wanted to sail wasn’t available on the market; a fast racing boat designed to have the same speed and performance in the water as a TP52, which could also provide a level of comfort and layout suitable for family cruising. The boat has been designed by Shaun Carkeek, who wanted to create a boat with a different design concept. A full prepreg carbon fibre hull, deck, structure and interior was chosen.“Using a combination of carbon prepreg and SPRIN from Gurit, our commitment was to accomplish a balance of lightness and strength, achieving a boat dedicated to racing and performance whilst also having comfort for cruising, making it possible to have a hot shower during the race, without too much of a weight penalty,” explained Antonio Latini, who led the build. The build team worked with a direct female mould, utilising Gurit carbon SPRIN and prepreg for the hull, as well as Corecell M structural foam. The Ampreg laminating series, PRIME infusion and Spabond adhesive products were also key components for the interior. The first NEO 570c #1 was launched in June 2022 and the female carbon moulds are ready to start #2.

A consortium of science and industry has created what it calls a sustainable alternative to virgin carbon fibre. The textile developed by GREENBOATS, Swiss-CMT and the Leibniz Institute for Composite Materials, uses recovered carbon fibres from non-woven fabrics with lower mechanical properties and significantly higher resin absorption. “There are areas of application where carbon fibres are simply vastly superior to other materials hence the need to look at comparable alternatives,” said Paul Riesen, head of R&D at GREENBOATS. Natural fibres Bio-based natural fibres are the core business of GREENBOATS and it has already manufactured entire sailing yachts, cabins for wind turbines, or parts for the aerospace industry from flax and other natural materials. But the recycling of materials of fossil origin has always been on the Easyagenda.processing has been key to the textile’s development. Paul Riesen said that the recycled textile is very easy to cut and drape and is suitable for a wide variety of processing methods. A special prepreg, that has been impregnated with the newly developed bio-based solid resin, is also being used. The PrePreg, which can be stored without refrigeration, only contains as much resin as is necessary and requires a minimum of auxiliary materials, which greatly reduces CO2 footprint. FIRST WATERMAKER IS FITTEDFischer Panda UK installed its first Parker Hannifin 12V 400 GPD H20 ECO watermaker reverse osmosis water desalination system to a 50ft Jeanneau sailing yacht earlier this year. First operational tests produced around 18 gallons per hour at 240 watts. The unit incorporates patent pending energy recovery technology, drawing 1 amp for around 3 litres of water production. “Initial results of the high output of water production and smooth operation reported by the sailing yacht owners are extremely positive,” said Chris Fower, sales and marketing director, Fischer Panda UK. “They have commented on the low power consumption, which enables them to manage the running of the watermaker so that it doesn’t drain the batteries.” Aquarius is the latest fully automatic watermaker from Australian based Stella Marine. The system has been designed to be simple, reliable and user friendly, with Stella Marine stating it has worked hard not to over complicate it. “A simpler, better engineered watermaker with less components means less maintenance is required,” said the company. “Running costs are minimal but will depend on how often it’s used and how well it’sThemaintained.”watermaker has its own start up and shut off sequence; it has high pressure and low-pressure factory pre-set shutdown safety settings and it will also auto flush. Users only need to press start and the Aquarius will run its own start-up sequence and begin making water and once the tank is full, press stop on the control panel. The system will run its own shut-down sequence, including a threeminute auto-flush and will then automatically switch itself into stand-by mode. The watermaker is made up of modular components for easier installation into the available space. The control panel can be mounted with other components or remotely in a separate cabinet. Other features include all metal components, such as in the high-pressure pump, membrane housing end caps and fittings, manufactured from either 316-grade stainless steel or Duplex. The pump has solid ceramic plungers, designed specifically for marine desalinationConsumablesparts.such as membranes, filters, pickling solution and pump oil are all standard items. The watermaker can produce between 80-240 litres per hour.

“I often hear the words life changing or game changer,” said John. “People love the system; they can plan their cruising pattern around where they want to be rather than around finding a water station.”

8 Water Freedom’s product is a water filtration system for inland waterways providing either 400 or 600 gallons per day of safe water for drinking and cooking. The watermaker is designed for leisure marine applications and works with AC or DC power, meaning a generator is not required.

The 57kg H2O ECO, measuring 283mm x 487mm x 627mm, was installed on the Jeanneau 509 yacht in the chart station seat locker. A remote switch was fitted nearby for easy one-touch operation, with daily access to the unit unnecessary.

8 Fischer Panda UK has installed its first H20 ECO watermakerx with beta testing currently taking place for a product –Water Freedom Pure - that will be able to produce drinking water. And an automatic product will be launched later in 2022.

Water Freedom was founded by John Howard as a solution to a ‘crazy situation’. As he states, he didn’t set out to start a company selling water filtration, but instead wanted a solution to solve an ongoing water problem for his own widebeam boat.

WATER SYSTEMS 26 | AUGUST 2022

The system – which doesn’t work with salt water – uses five filters. Three, of 50, 5 and 1 micron, are used for removing sediment such as diesel, hydrocarbons, heavy metals or pesticides. The water also passes through an ultra-violet tube rated to 25 litres a minute that kills any pathogens, viruses or cysts. The result is water that is suitable for showers, washing up, or toilet flushing - everything apart from drinking. Under sink filtration is also available that filters the water to a finer grade. The standard system, which produces 10 litres of water a minute using between 250 to 300W of power, will cost around £150 to £200 a year to run, depending on water usage. An upgraded version doubles the water production to 20 litres per minute.

“The idea started almost eight years’ ago,” said John. “I was cruising in Central London and found a mooring at Paddington. My water was at a critical level, but I didn’t want to lose the mooring, so I waited until 3am to go to the water point. “At 4.15am, I thought it was crazy. I was surrounded by water and started thinking there must be a way of cleaning it.”

The filter medias work together to Septemberconsultation15surfactants.bacteria,solids,microplastics,removesuspendedoilandgrease,odour,phosphatesandFlowratesareasfastaslitresperminute.TheGovernmentrunsuntil2022.

The Government launched a consultation in July 2022 to gather views and evidence on five sites for Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs). The project follows a review which states human activities can have a significant effect on marine habitats and species, and higher levels of protection will be required to enable the sea’s condition to recover back to a more natural state. This is a factor Wave International’s marketing manager, Bryan Stewart is finding, with increasing numbers of boaters installing water filter products that stop pollutants entering the waterways and oceans. “Grey water filters are increasingly being specified for use in environments such as harbours and marinas,” he says. “We have also heard reports from internationallybased marinas, issuing fines to vessels caught pumping grey water overboard.” He added: “To reduce negative environmental impact, all boaters and amenities should be using treatment systems for grey tripleWavewater.”International’ssystem filter operates automatically with grey water passing through the module containing a replaceable filter cartridge.

On joining the company, she was no stranger to the business having spent many a school holiday at boat shows or folding nautical charts. In fact, Lucy was the eighth generation of her family in the business of nautical cartography and pilot book publishing. And while she didn’t have a sailing background, much of her childhood had been spent messing about on the water. “We all enjoyed being outdoors, messing about on the river Ouse in wooden rowing boats or the Cam in punts.“Grafham Water was just up the road, and I love being by the sea too. I’ve done some navigation training too. And while Lucy says she’s often asked how she can run a business which is about sailing without a sailing background, her answer is that the business is as much about publishing, creating products and presenting information too. Concentrating first on book production as it was closest to her publishing background, Lucy – who took over the role of MD of the company in 2020made it her mission to first get to know the people and organisations that create the content for the products that are others,”experienceswhose“They’republished.theexpertsknowledgeandwesharewithshesays.

Digital transformation She continued her nautical education learning more about navigation and geographic information systems, while continuing to concentrate on the digital transformation of the company.“I’msurrounded by the experts on the sailing side and having that combination of skills and experience is what makes Imray great.” The company has a long history of helping seafarers of navigating their way safely – in fact there’s few cruising sailors that won’t have come across the Cruising Almanac at some point in their travels. “We publish over 100 books, more than 250 charts and a series of marine apps. “Imray products can be found in marine stores, chandleries and bookshops and on the app stores in more than 40 countries worldwide.”

Throughout her career, Lucy has always been keen to keep an eye on what’s going on around her, spending around half her time meeting people and visiting places, advice she’s keen to pass onto others. “Read industry blogs and magazines, go to events, talk to others. Learn new skills and take on challenges,” she advises. “Get training or qualifications. It’s important to keep learning from others.”Sheadds: “Nurture and value the people around you; collaborate and share as much as possible; think laterally; draw on other industries and the wider world for ideas and inspiration.”Butwhile Lucy believes it’s important to not be put off by challenges, to stay positive and cheerful, she cautions it’s also important to have a balance with work and to have a fulfilling life outside of work. And as for the future? Lucy is keen to continue to develop Imray products, its brand and community in the digital space, while retaining a healthy respect for the company’s heritage.

8 Lucy Wilson on her travels

And as for low points –for Lucy, one of her lowest moments was when Imray’s warehouse flooded at the end of 2020 after a full-on year of covid lockdowns, travel restrictions and looming Brexit-related issues.“Wading through muddy water surrounded by pallets of ruined books on Boxing Day was pretty depressing.”

Crowdfunding In 2021, Imray ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to develop Explore with Imray, a product that combines the advances of technology and detailed navigation information with new features and ‘huge’ amounts of Anddata.while Lucy admits this was a lot of work to set up, the support received, and the fantastic customer reviews have been amazing and gave a muchappreciated boost during the Covid pandemic have turned it into a career boost.

Lucy Wilson’s career began in the arts and publishing sector, working at start-ups and global companies at a senior level. However, after her first daughter was born, she opted for a change of lifestyle - a decision that coincided with her father Willie thinking about retiring from his role as head of the family business, Imray. “It became a fairly natural conversation and I joined Imray nine years’ ago. There was never any pressure to work at Imray because it was a family business, it just seemed like a good opportunity at the right time.”

And Lucy adds: “Our ancestors worked with ships’ captains in the London docklands from the late 1700s onwards, and during the 18th century, our charts were the first choice of shipping companies worldwide.“In1904, it became law that ships must carry official charts, Imray was formally incorporated, and the company’s focus turned to leisure sailing and small craft.”

Commenting on his appointment Dr Howe said: “I’m really enjoying this new role as I truly believe that crew deserve the best medical care possible. Too often they get overlooked and forgotten about, yet without their dedication 90% of the world’s goods would not reach their intended destination.”
