£1 BILLION ORDERBOOK

Princess Yachts has its biggest order book in the history of the company, valued at around £1 billion at retail prices.

And while the company has a long waiting list with most build slots full until the end of 2024, the company says it is missing customers due to supply chain issues which are affecting the number of boats which can be built and which it terms as ‘galling’.

The consequence is that while the boatbuilder is covering its costs, it is not making the profits it would like and is consequently looking to raise £20 million in capital to build a new facility.

At a business update given at Southampton International Boat Show, Will Green, executive sales and marketing director, said that in April and May 2020, the company’s order intake halved due to the Covid pandemic.

“We were extremely concerned,” he said. And being the largest company in a small city, faced additional pressure from local officials.

In 2021, the company faced the ‘pingdemic’ and in 2022 has seen a shortage of raw materials, particularly specialist timbers, generators and engines.

“We have been caught up with the supply chain,” said Will. “For instance, we placed an order for 300 generators and were granted 100 of them. This year’s been tough with OE equipment.”

The knock-on effect is that while the company would like to build around 300 boats, the reality is that around 200 boats will be built in 2022 and customers are selling their used boats and making money.

Show receives ‘exceptional’ feedback

gures show more than 83,000 people attended the 53rd Southampton International Boat Show with organisers, exhibitors, sponsors and visitors calling the show a great success.

The show saw 685 stands and berths over a 70,000sqm footprint.

More than 650 craft were on display across the show, with around 300 boats berthed in the marina. The show also saw 126 new companies exhibiting.

“There has been a fabulous atmosphere at this year’s show and the feedback we’ve received from exhibitors from across the industry has been exceptional, with many indicating very

strong sales,” said Lesley Robinson, CEO of show organiser British Marine.

“The show has put a real smile on everyone’s face with a fantastic mix of products, talks, entertainment and refreshments, plus our stunning new VIP experience.”

However, she said the days of national mourning and the closure of the show on the day of the Queen’s funeral saw an expected impact on visitor numbers.

Attractions included Get Afloat, Try-A-Boat and Try-A-Boat+ experience with 14,000 visitors taking to the water. In addition, there was a range of historic craft for visitors to explore and the Quayside Club VIP experience was a new addition.

BOATBUILDER ANNOUNCES MILESTONE

Ribeye has officially launched its partnership with Finnish based XO Boats, described as a ‘milestone’ for the business.

The Dartmouth based rib builder will sell the entire range of XO boats and will also customise the craft if required by customers under the new XO Boats by Ribeye banner.

“We found loads of our clients wanted to try something else in boating,” said James Burroughs, Ribeye MD.

“There are lots of people interested in this segment

and we felt that XO was the brand.”

He added: The boats can go anywhere, it’s the best synergy.”

XO Boats are manufactured from military grade aluminium combined with aesthetic design constructed from fibreglass.

The boats are designed to be able to explore the most remote areas, no matter how rough the conditions.

The craft are described as providing the ‘ultimate boating experience on the water’.

Ribeye is also seeing

growth in its yacht tender market and to cope with this and the extra demand expected with the XO Boats partnership – in eight weeks, six orders have been secured – the boatbuilder is currently building a new facility of 15,000sqft which will be completed by the end of 2022.

“Our orderbook is around 18 months with only the odd slot available,” explained James.”

Ribeye was established in 1998.

NEW BOAT SALES DECLINE

For the second time in the last 14 years, preowned boat sales in the US exceeded one million in 2021.

The latest stats from the NMMA - National Marine Manufacturers Association - show sales reached 1.15 million with outboard engine powered boats accounting for 61.7% of all pre-owned sales.

However sales of new boats commonly used for cruising, watersports

and fishing declined compared to 2020 with watersport boats seeing the smallest decline of 0.3% and outboard cruiser sales increasing 6% compared to 2020.

New cruiser sales declined 5.8%, primarily due to the decline in sales of sterndrive cruisers.

Pontoon boat sales declined 1.9%, reflecting supply chain bottlenecks.

Sales of saltwater and freshwater fishing boats combined declined 8.6%

Demand still exists

There’s little doubt that there’s still demand at the top end of the new boat market but at the middle and entry level, a softening in demand is being seen.

Speaking to many boatbuilders at the recent Southampton International Boat Show, the main frustration continues to be supply chain issues, particularly with regards to engines, generators and the chips needed for electronic devices.

And these supply chain woes have not been helped by further Covid related lockdowns in China, inflationary pressures, rising interest rates, rising fuel prices and continued recruitment problems.

The supply chain hold-ups have had a marked effect on the number of boats that the larger, luxury brands have been able to produce with one such builder, Princess Yachts, stating this is why their numbers are down by a third.

And this in turn has had a knock-on effect with those suppliers that have got stock being unable to sell as much as they would like or have themselves budgeted for.

However, while these issues will continue to dominate the new boat sector for some time to come, the used boat market remains buoyant, again particularly at the luxury end of the market with some yachts reportedly being sold for more than what they cost when new.

In America, for the second time in 14 years, preowned boat sales have exceeded one million according to figures from the US national association, the NMMA.

The figures show while cruiser sales declined, sales of smaller outboard powered boats rose and while sales of smaller fishing boats declined, they remained 10% above the 14-year average.

US reports similarly show that nearly 40% of private boat sellers are intending to upgrade their craft in the near future, despite worries about interest rate rises and current economic conditions.

The report indicates that boaters are being retained after the 2020 surge and want to continue enjoying their time on the water, which is very positive news. Only 3% of the say they are selling because they cannot afford their boats anymore.

but remained 10% above the 14-year unit sales average and boat trailer sales declined 3.2% after nine consecutive years of growth.

Other figures show 63% of all pre-owned boat sales were of fiberglass construction with 98% of all pre-owned sales for inboard cruisers, inboard wake sport boats, sterndrive boats, personal watercraft, jet boats, and sailboats constructed from fibreglass.

The figures are likely to be similar for the UK and indicate the reset that everyone has anticipated is finally coming.

Margins are already being squeezed and it remains only a matter of time before prices will have to be hiked to keep up with rising costs.

So the next questions are, how much of a reset will there be, when will it really bite and what can boatbuilders and equipment suppliers do to offset it?

The latest major boat shows all saw many happy exhibitors although visitor numbers have declined –blamed on external factors such as the Queen’s death in the UK and bad weather in France.

METSTRADE is around the corner with no doubt the usual plethora of new products to entice boaters. Only time will tell if these new innovations will be enough to tempt buyers to spend their cash.

Matt Ovenden

How I got into this industry...

I’ve been an avid boater since childhood – I grew up waterskiing and wakeboarding in the Blackwater Estuary, as well as racing Dart catamarans and in my teens enjoyed sailing yachts. My inspiration for Borrow A Boat was seeded in 2016 when I was struggling to charter a catamaran for a family holiday – all I could find were seven-day minimum charters or required expensive boating club memberships. I quickly realised that boating needed to be made more accessible in order to attract more participants, so I created Borrow A Boat.

Best advice I’ve ever received...

Be bold. Throughout my career I’ve found that in order to achieve ambitions, fulfil your potential, drive innovation and deliver change, you will need to overcome obstacles, prove others wrong and be bold throughout this process.

One thing the industry needs less of is...

The snootiness, ’snobbiness’ factor. It’s this reputation that puts people off getting

into boating, or joining a yacht club, or trying to learn a new sport, and it is this ‘glass ceiling’ that ultimately holds back the industry.

Most hated buzzword or workplace expression...

This is the ’new normal’. Phrases such as ’let’s adapt to the new normal’, ’we all need to keep in mind the new normal’ and ’this is how everything is going to work in the new normal’ were saturated as we emerged from the pandemic.

Best place I’ve been...

I couldn’t choose a single location, but the South of France is definitely up there with one of my favourite spots - I love the Lerins Islands near Cannes. The Aeolian Islands off the North coast of Italy would also have to be my favourite area for sailing.

Don't worry about...

The naysayers – particularly if you’re doing something innovative or new. There will always be people to tell you that you can’t do it of will fail, but its great to prove those people wrong.

Favourite meal...

Steak - reverse seared over lumpwood charcoal with wood smoke, accompanied by a glass

of full-bodied French redideally a Rhone Cru.

One thing I couldn’t live without...

Time outdoors and on the water. Being on or near the water is the ultimate antidote to the everyday stresses of modern life, and the best way to relax, providing a number of proven mental and physical benefits.

How I cope with stress...

By staying organised and efficient, delegating and leaning on colleagues as well as maintaining a healthy work-life balance, with plenty of time on the water.

Something about you that people might be surprised by...

Borrow A Boat is actually my fourth business as a tech entrepreneur. Prior to this, I founded a cleantech consultancy, a wind farm development business and a specialist eco-island in the Caribbean. I once worked with Richard Branson on a project to make Necker Island as sustainable and energy efficient as possible, going on to collaboratively promote cleantech across the Caribbean.

Technology company expands

Scanstrut has expanded into a larger facility in Westbrook, Connecticut.

The new location is the company’s headquarters for its North American operations and serves its distribution, dealer and OEM customers.

“Our move to a brand new, significantly larger facility will enable our North American operation to increase inventory levels and more efficiently service our customers, without whom this expansion would not be possible,” said Chris Beaudry, general manager, VP.

Scanstrut’s range of outdoor technology products has been a key factor in its recent growth. Products such as its wireless and USB chargers are now factory fit for a number of iconic boat brands in North America together with an expanding network of aftermarket dealers and installers.

“Under the fantastic leadership of Chris Beaudry, Scanstrut Inc has grown significantly and I’m delighted that we’re able to expand our operations to meet the needs of our customers,” said Tom Reed, Scanstrut CEO.

“With several major new product launches coming over the next two years, the additional space and shipping efficiencies it will provide will keep us running at full speed into our next phase of growth.”

MARINE SALARY SURVEY REPORT 2022

Marine Resource’s Industry Salary Survey Report 2022 reveals there is still a large gender pay gap in the marine industry.

The recruitment consultancy’s annual report surveyed 2,500 respondents across key sectors and follows on from a report produced in 2019.

“With the salary survey report, we bring employers and job seekers an essential tool needed to benchmark their current salaries across key roles within the leisure marine industry, as well as some fascinating insight and trends within the current employment market,” said James Ward, CEO and founder, Marine Resources.

The report reveals several areas that the sector needs to work on, as per the first report in 2019.

The average salary in 2019 was £37,490, which has increased to £39,734

in 2022, however 62.6% of respondents either feel neutral or disagree that their pay is adequate.

Also, more than70% of respondents were either neutral or looking to change their job in the next 12 months.

The report reveals a similar disparity between male and female genders compared to the 2019 survey, with 15.9% being female in 2019 and in 2022 18.8% female, though female wages remain almost 10% lower

8 The latest report reveals plenty of areas that the sector needs to work on going forward

Fatal

An investigation into the fatal accident onboard the Amicitia where its mast broke and killed three people has revealed wood rot as the cause. The Dutch Safety Branch report revealed that there was no maintenance plan for the mast in question. The mast certificate issued in 2012, which was valid until 2018, caused the captain to think that this safety critical part of the ship met all safety requirements.

Accessories

Barrus has been appointed as the exclusive UK distributor for CMP Europe’s brands, including Rocna and Vulcan anchors, Titan Marine, Dock Edge+ and Panther Marine Products. Designed in New Zealand, Rocna and Vulcan anchors are designed for good holding power. Dock Edge+ is a comprehensive range of dockside products, designed to protect a vessel when coming alongside. Panther Marine provides a selection of accessories for outboardpowered craft.

Recyclable

ExoTechnologies is promising to revolutionise boat building with the launch of its first recyclable high-performance leisure boat. The 11 metre £350,000 vessel has been built at the start-up’s Ultimate Boats yard in Glasgow to a design by John Moxham. ExoTechnologies chief executive Shane Mugan said the company is providing a green alternative to fibre glassbuilt boats, most of which end up in landfill.

10% DROP FOR GRAND PAVOIS

Grand Pavois La Rochelle 2022 saw 73,000 visitors, a 10% drop from 2021, blamed by the organisers on bad weather.

The show saw 800 international brands and 750 boats on show with around 110 new boats and products.

“This 2022 edition has been very satisfying for the Grand Pavois Organisation’s Board of Directors,” said Alain Pochon, president of Grand Pavois Organisation.

“We could be critical of the weather, which clearly explains the 10% decline in our visitor numbers, with a windy and rainy first day and Saturday.

“However, this did not prevent high-quality visitors from attending the show, with prospective customers, foreign visitors and, above all, first-time buyers, underlining the real ambition of our event.”

Highlights of the

show include a growing Sustainable Innovations space run in conjunction with EDF and the Grand Pavois Fishing event.

More than 100 boats were available to test from 10am to 7pm with the the pontoons were opened to allow other brands to take

to the sea after 5.30pm.

For 2023, the organisers will move the show back a day to give two days between the end of Cannes Yachting Festival and the start of the Grand Pavois La Rochelle.

“Leaving just one day between these two major

events was too difficult to manage for professional exhibitors,” said Alain.

8 The 2023 show will be held from Wednesday 20 to Monday 25 September.

54,000 VISITORS TO SHOW

The Cannes Yachting Festival saw 54,000 visitors over six days with 135 world boat and equipment debuts.

The show saw almost 650 boats - monohull and multihull, motor and sailing boats – with other features including an Innovation Village showing ‘intelligent’ start-ups in the nautical sector from cover boat design to systems putting owners in contact with captains.

“In many ways 2022 will remain unforgettable, not only because we celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Festival, but mainly because we reached our ambitious objective which was to exceed the results of the 2019 edition prior to Covid,” explained Sylvie Ernoult, festival director.

“Beyond the results, from the first days of the Festival we heard lots of feedback

from our 600 exhibitors as to how satisfied they were and delighted with the visitor quality, positive sales

and wonderful weather. All the indicators were green. We are proud of and happy with these results.”

8 The next edition of the Festival will be held from Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17 September 2023.

METSTRADE BACK IN FULL

Following a one-off adjusted pandemic edition last year, METSTRADE is back.

In a behind the scenes chat, Niels Klarenbeek, director, METSTRADE, said that the organisers are bringing back all important elements that belong to METSTRADE’s DNA.

”We are welcoming back the DAME Awards to the show floor, and the BBA Awards Ceremony returns to the Maritime Museum for the BBA Gala Dinner, in close cooperation with IBI. The 30th edition of the Superyacht Forum, the HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction, HISWA Marina Symposium, the Young Professionals Club, Exhibitor Happy Hour, the various Country Pavilion Networking Receptions; they’re all back in place,” he said.

Positive signs

Mr Klarenbeek said that early indicators for 2022 are very positive, with 96% of visitors and 90% of exhibitors declaring their intention to return, a total of 1400 exhibitors. This includes 42 exhibitors in the British pavilion. METSTRADE is also receiving many first-time applications, particularly from electric

River Canal Rescue’s callouts are set to reach an all-time high by the end of the year.

The inland waterways rescue organisation says figures up to September 30 are already 3318, ahead of 3235 logged for 2021, and 2850 rescues in 2020.

The callouts have generally been for electrical, fuel and engine issues, flat batteries, over-heating and gear box failures, with RCR saying the rise is due to the high number of people unable to visit and maintain their boats during lockdown, resulting in minor niggles now becoming larger problems.

propulsion and electronics companies.

This year’s show will introduce a ‘Superyacht Sustainability Route’ in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation.

Focused on the superyacht industry, this new initiative will indicate exhibitors on the METSTRADE 2022 show floor who have passed the Foundation’s rigorous Life Cycle Assessment.

TED Fellow and ICAS Aerospace Innovation Award recipient, Cory Combs, will deliver the Breakfast Keynote Speech. In “Paragon or Pariah? Sustainability Challenges

and Opportunities from the Sky to the Sea.”

Mr Combs will explain a key takeaway from his experience at Ampaire –to start small and iterate with the technology and infrastructure that exists today, rather than waiting for silver bullet solutions.

The dedicated SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP) is resuming its residency in Halls 9-11 providing a more spacious layout to accommodate its comprehensive array of dedicated premier stands and networking spaces.

Safety enhanced on IMOCA yachts

Plastimo has been working with the IMOCA class to further enhance safety on its 60ft yachts.

The class has submitted a list of specifications the liferaft designer and manufacturer, as recommended by Kevin Escoffier, the PRB skipper whose accident in the Indian Ocean hit the headlines in the 2020-21 Vendée Globe.

Now, Plastimo has launched a new liferaft designed to equip the whole fleet.

“Ever since IMOCA boats exist, Plastimo has equipped them with safety gear,” said Frédéric Blaudeau, Plastimo marketing and communication manager.

“This time was different though; our marketing and R&D teams went a step further in cooperation.

“Together with Kevin and the IMOCA Class, we brainstormed the concept of a product customised for offshore racing conditions while necessarily being compliant with ISO9650 standard.”

An AIS (Automatic Identification System) beacon has been added to the liferaft, together with a handheld VHF. Visibility is improved with two extra radar reflective panels on the canopy.

“Figures are currently an unseasonable high and we still have a couple of months to go,” said RCR MD, Stephanie Horton. “It’s

worth noting that only 14% of callouts were attended by contractors this year, partially due to their availability.

RCR’s Canal Contracting service has also arranged 455 visits this year, to undertake a variety of work, including: plumbing and electrical installations, gearbox replacements, inverter, solar installations and general engine maintenance as well as 90 rescue jobs.

Other structural modifications include moving the drogue securing point to the side of the liferaft so that the tension on the drogue line is no longer on the canopy opening side, reducing exposure to waves and water entry through the open canopy.

And the painter line is more clearly identified to release the liferaft from the boat safely.

NEWS For the latest news and analysis go to www.boatingbusiness.com OCTOBER 2022 | 11

Individuals and organisations alike have sought urgent help as the economy has been battered by the effects of COVID and attempts to curtail Russia’s Ukrainian ambitions.

And a series of lifelines may well have been provided by the new chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, in what was termed by many a ‘mini-budget’ but by the government as The Growth Plan 2022. The tools deployed by Kwarteng were in stark contrast to those used by previous chancellors who latterly wound the tax burden up to its highest level since the 1940s.

And the use of those tools has created much disquiet and, a u-turn.

Energy

So, to the mini-budget and starting with the ‘preannouncements’ a few days before the event, the chancellor reiterated that households would see their energy bills capped at £2,500 for an average household. On top of that there would be £400 given in instalments over a sixmonth period from October. Those off the gas grid – for example, on oil or LPG –would be given £100 on top of that sum.

There is assistance for businesses too as many ordinarily viable firms faced going to the wall. So, the government’s announcement that they will also be able to benefit from the same cap per unit of energy as will apply to households was welcomed. However, it will only apply for six months, not two years. On current prices the help will take an estimated 45% off bills.

The chancellor noted that “the consensus amongst independent forecasters is that the

GOOD THINGS COME IN LARGE PACKAGES?

government’s energy plan will reduce peak inflation by around five percentage points.” If that is the case then individuals, businesses and the government will be mightily relieved.

National Insurance and Dividends Tax Next came the announcement that the previous government’s increase in National Insurance by 1.25% is to be reversed from November. The move will benefit both employees and employers and should save the former on average £330 a year while businesses should save £10,000 a year.

And for business owners, shareholders specifically, the chancellor said that the 1.25% increase on income tax on dividends announced at the same time as the same rise in National Insurance from April 2022, will be reversed from April 2023. This is expected to save taxpayers an average of £345 a year.

Corporation and Income Tax Moving to those measures actually announced in the

mini budget, with an eye to encouraging as many overseas firms as possible to base themselves in the UK, the planned rise in Corporation Tax from 19 to 25% in April 2023 has been shelved. The argument used is that while individual firms may pay less tax, that deficit will be made up through a greater number of corporate taxpayers liable to pay tax.

Corporates – large and small – seeking to invest in plant and equipment will also be pleased that the Annual Investment Allowance threshold has been permanently set at £1 million, rather than reverting to £200,000 from April 2023. This is a 100% capital allowance for qualifying expenditure.

Other business-related changes are the creation of new investment zones that will be granted lower tax rates and easier planning rules; an expansion of the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) to help startups raise finance; and an expansion of the Company Share Option Plan (CSOP) scheme which allows companies to tax-efficiently

grant shares to full-time directors.

For individuals, the chancellor brought forward from 2024 to 2023 a 1p cut in income tax, down from 20p to 19p in the pound.

While the cut applies to those currently earning between £12,571 to £50,270, surprisingly, the chancellor moved to help high-rate taxpayers and abolished the 45% highest tax band for those on more than £150,000. However, barely ten days after the mini budget the chancellor was forced to recant this last particular cut. It caused much outrage and was politically unacceptable.

The scrapping of some of the IR35 rules will be welcomed by firms who will no longer have the burden of checking employment status of staff where they employ the ‘self-employed’. However, that problem will be passed back to contractors who will either ignore the rule or be tied up in knots having to defend their status.

Other help Those buying homes

will have more left in their pockets through an immediate cut in Stamp Duty for transactions in England and Northern Ireland. In detail, the chancellor raised the threshold before Stamp Duty is paid to £250,000 from £125,000 and gave more assistance to first-time buyers. They formerly paid nothing on purchases below £300,000 but will benefit from an increase in the threshold to £425,000. Even better, that help now applies to homes valued up to £625,000 rather than £500,000 previously.

Summary

So, why all of the tax cuts and why now? Very simply, the economy is heading for a recession if it’s not in one now and the government – backed by reams of statistics - wants to minimise the fallout from this and instead, grow GDP by 2.5% a year.

However, others think that interest rates could rise to 5% or more next year as inflation could be exacerbated by the changes. And the foreign exchange markets aren’t convinced either – sterling dropped as investors worried about the level of debt that the government is about to take on at a time when the Bank of England is to sell off some of the government debt it holds.

Ultimately, the Prime Minister’s administration believes in individuals keeping as much of their money as possible –especially the wealthy who will benefit proportionately more from the tax cuts. It wants the public and business to spend more so that it trickles down through the economy.

Some, including President Biden who recently commented on this mid-September, bekieve that the tax cuts are ultimately destined to fail. And maybe they will, but only time will tell.

Battery production to start

The new Don’t Die Stackable Lithium Trolling Motor Battery is the result of six years’ of marine research and development by the Lithium Battery Company.

The battery has been developed to be fast charging, mounted in any orientation, be controlled by the user to monitor and to optimise energy usage.

It can also be used as a portable power source.

American Battery Solutions is to begin production of its high-voltage Proliance Intelligent Battery Series T350-50 line at the end of 2022.

The Proliance line of 350V 52kWh batteries is the first standardised high voltage product in the ABS battery portfolio.

“Our Proliance Intelligent Battery Series is designed and built on ABS’ combined decades of experience in battery engineering and production,” said Subhash Dhar, ABS founder, chairman and CEO. “Proliance offers nextgeneration thermal and battery management systems in an IP69K-sealed environment, especially important in off-road and marine applications, as well as advanced monitoring and diagnostics capabilities for preventive maintenance with easy interface with CCS fast chargers.”

ABS has recently signed a multi-year supply agreement with Forza X1, subsidiary of Twin Vee Power Cats, in which ABS will supply Proliance T350-50 lithium-ion batteries to power Forza X1’s new electric boat.

The ABS high-voltage batteries are designed, tested, and manufactured for a range of applications including the marine market.

The batteries are designed to be zero maintenance and have a long life.

“Other companies were focusing on using 12-volt lithium-ion batteries for trolling motors, golf carts, and motorhomes which were very inefficient and created a lot of problems for the consumer. I knew there was a better way of doing this,” said Nathan Staron, Lithium Battery CEO.

The Don’t Die battery is military-grade, has a waterproof design and features an interlocking system for stacking additional units based on the user’s needs.

The battery’s app allows users to get instant battery notifications, monitor and optimise energy usage in real-time, and make

SIX YEARS’ RESEARCH

changes to conserve energy and improve performance.

The battery’s cells are made to order with a ‘born on date’ after undergoing a computerised selection process to guarantee purity and increased capacity.

The performance and

usage history of each battery is driven by built-in diagnostics that pinpoint issues, allowing technical support staff to quickly determine and resolve issues as they happen.

“It’s not just a battery, and we are crossing into artificial intelligence

technology to prevent failures before they happen, reduce downtime and costs for our customers, and troubleshoot in real-time,” added Nathan.

BATTERIES ARE DEPENDABLE

One of the latest batteries from Fullriver is from the company’s Full Throttle range.

The FT840-24M battery has brass dual-terminal setup combining SAE and threaded stud terminals in a left-hand positive configuration.

The battery has 840 coldcranking amps, a reserve capacity of 163 minutes at 25A, 30% more than the BCI recommendation of 585.

The batteries use the same design principles as the rest of Full Throttle range.

They are built using 99.99% pure lead, over-the-partition cell connections, and epoxy sealed ABS cases to stand up to the rigors of

harsh environments while continuing to provide peak performance.

The batteries are distributed in the UK by Merlin Power which has also brought several new models

to market of the Fullriver DC Series batteries - which are fitted as standard by the RNLI and Sunseeker.

The DC Series range of batteries are designed for severe deep cycle use and

dependability in critical use applications.

Pure-lead chemistry is used for performance.

“The ability to deep cycle to 100% depth of discharge while returning up to 1500 cycles at 50% depth of discharge mean that the Fullriver DC series outperforms almost all others,” said James Hortop, Merlin Power MD.

“A ten-year design life coupled with a fiveyear warranty and the ability to recover from catastrophically low voltages provide the best battery for those whose lives or livelihoods depend on battery power.”

ABS acquires IP portfolio

American Battery Solutions, developer and manufacturer of advanced battery systems has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the complete intellectual property portfolio of Tiveni, Inc.

The addition of Tiveni developed technologies will accelerate ABS’ deployment of low-cost, energy-dense, crash-tolerant EV batteries.

The acquisition includes a supporting patent portfolio protecting the cost/ density/safety advantages included in Tiveni’s designs.

The intellectual property portfolio includes issued patents and 143 pending applications with 32 in the EU and UK.

Eurocell has confirmed that it is likely to construct its new gigafactory in the Netherlands.

The factory will be developed in two phases, reaching full capacity by 2025.

The Anglo-Korean battery company has announced that the first phase will produce advanced battery cells at scale by early 2023 for existing European customers.

The second phase, potentially on the same site, will be capable of producing more than 40 million cells per year by 2025.

The initial investment is around 800 million dollars, rising to around 2 billion dollars by 2028 to support

the fast-growing European energy storage market.

The company will produce ‘production ready’ technologies in 12 months, using its existing battery product which is verified and validated for scaled-up manufacturing.

The factory is part of Eurocell’s European expansion plans and will replicate the company’s South Korean facilities.

The batteries, which have been developed in Korea have been developed to be safe in the event of impact penetration or shocks with no risk of self-ignition.

They have a wide operating temperature range and a long lifespan of around 25 years.

“We are excited to add Tiveni’s battery module system technologies to our own ABS battery module design, including the functional, safety, and cost improvements inherent in the Tiveni technologies and design,” said Subhash Dhar, ABS founder, chairman and CEO. “Along with our significant existing IP, this acquisition positions ABS IP portfolio at the forefront in relation to major industry players using cylindrical cell battery systems.”

The technologies developed by Tiveni focus on a systems-level approach to the EV battery, with innovations in battery design and manufacturing technology.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed by mutual agreement.

NEW EFFICIENT SOLAR PANELS

SAFE-Li is the new 340hp lithium-cobalt battery from SEALENCE.

The battery has a capacity of 83kWh and 250kW of power (equivalent to 340hp) at 450 volts and weighs 550kg.

The heavy-duty battery has been designed for intense use with SEALENCE highlighting the product’s safety which was at the centre of the project’s development, in addition to the technical specifications.

SEALENCE has developed the battery so it cannot catch fire.

The whole battery pack is immersed in flameretardant liquid which the company says prevents even serious damage to one cell from spreading to adjacent ones, effectively avoiding any chances of triggering dangerous chain reactions.

The battery is also equipped with intelligent software algorithms governed by a proprietary battery management system capable of transmitting data such as the real-time charging information or battery health status, to a mobile phone or computer as well as to receive software updates via On The Air wherever the user is in the world.

This battery is intended to equip electric-propelled yachts from 12 to 18 meters, as well as to provide silent energy for on-board services.

Openarc Marine is starting sea trials for its newly developed hydroelectric generator.

The generator has been developed by Mark Basham and Jim Shields who saw several drawbacks with existing technologies which they say couple the turbine directly to the generator making them drag sensitive and limited in range and output.

The two sailors set about designing a system that will control drag while also opening up a wider range of operation with higher energy yields.

The patent pending system uses a sophisticated control mechanism which allows electricity to be generated at very low speeds.

“Because the amount of drag can be controlled, the user can choose to sacrifice speed to generate more electricity if they wish,” explained Jim. “This degree of control is an important variable and makes our

product unique in the marketplace, creating a significant step forward for our industry.”

Testing

The team has now bought a test vessel and is nearing completion of the modifications needed to mount the system with associated metrology for

characterisation in real world conditions. By the end of October 2022, it is hoped to have the first turbine characterised and the drive will then be to search for investment and move from the present prototype systems to production.

Jim added: “The prototype works and has been verified; we now need

to put it in the real-world environment.

“The tests will be very controlled at different speeds from 2 knots to 12 knots looking at the power transfer from the turbine being towed through the water into a generator.”

Super B has introduced two new, more powerful models in its Epsilon lithium line.

The 12V 100Ah and 12V 150Ah replace the 90Ah and 100Ah respectively, with the additional power in the same size casing made possible through Super B’s new cell design – prismatic rather than cylindrical – thus saving space.

“The cells fit together without wasted space, allowing more power to be fitted into the same space,” explained Martin Richardson director of UK SuperB supplier, Clean Energy Living.

The batteries have an inbuilt automatic heating element, eliminating charging issues at low temperatures and are IP66 rated meaning there can be no leaks and no dirt can get into the battery casing.

The batteries also have a sophisticated and integrated BMS for safety, functionality and ease of use, improved Bluetooth connectivity and multi connectable coated aluminium terminals.

The batteries have high discharge currents, a high capacity a high cycle count – greater than 5,000 cycles – and a fast re-charge time.

In addition, Super B has recently released a larger version of its Nomia battery, increasing the power from 210Ah to 340Ah, again in the same size of casing.

The batteries can be wired together in series to change up to 24 / 48 volt.

New solar panel representation

NEW WHITE-LABEL PLATFORM

The new Vesscomm system provides a unified connectivity platform for boats and marine assets as a white-label platform for boat builders and systems installers.

Global Marine Associates is to represent California based flexible solar panel manufacturers Sol-Go for the marine market in Europe.

The battery has a ca“For some time now we have been looking for a representative that has a complete understanding of the marine market as well as strong relationships with Europe’s leading distributors,” said Scott McHugo Sol-Go CEO.

“Global Marine Associates came highly recommended following the success they have had establishing other North American manufacturers products and I have every belief that our joint efforts will bring success for both parties.”

Martin Harding GMA MD added: “Sol-Go flexible solar panels are technically at the pinnacle of what is commercially available today. One very important factor in us taking the decision to partner with Sol-Go was that the company was founded by the SunPower solar cell development team who have in recent years, dramatically moved solar panel technology forwards.”

Sol-Go panels feature the SunPower Maxeon IBC (back contact cell) developed to resist power loss and ensurs the highest possible levels of efficiency.

“We believe the SolGo flexible solar panel programme will be appealing to distributors and dealers who may already distribute solar panels as well as to those who are looking to enter this arena for the first time,” added Martin.

The system connects all aspects of analogue, digital and NMEA2000 monitoring as well as switching and control to the company’s cloud application.

The information is then provided to fleet managers and end boat owners under custom branded apps and interfaces.

The system has been developed by the Isle of Wight based company to allow boat owners and manufacturers to simplify the install and setup of equipment plus provide cutting edge smart home style controls and data feedback to make the correct decisions for maintenance of marine assets.

The equipment comes with Deutsch style connectors as standard and IP67 ratings and has a 7-70V

IN-BUILT CHARGING FEATURE

The new EnergyMatic propeller from EWOL has been designed with an in-built charging feature which will turn the prop into a hydro-generator able to recharge batteries.

The propeller has been developed mainly but not only, for electric propulsion boats, with the propeller functioning as an electric turbine to generate energy.

Hydraulic transmission is via an alternator connected to the shaft which recharges the batteries while sailing without having to start the engine.

The propeller has also been designed so it is easy to feather the blades to create minimal

resistance when boats are under sail. EnergyMatic is a lightweight, highperformance, high-tech

propeller that allows the pitch to be altered to increase motor cruising speed. Manoeuvrability is

also aided during mooring manoeuvres.

Like other EWOL propellers, it is manufactured from stainless steel to maximise mechanical strength, resistance to galvanic corrosion and product reliability.

The propeller also has an internal automatic return to the feathered variablepitch, meaning users do not need to stop the shaft to feather the blades and it is not necessary to switch off the engine and engage reverse gear.

A patent application has been filed for the EnergyMatic propeller.

Victron app upgrades

Victron has made a raft of changes to its Remote Management (VRM) and VictronConnect apps promising to revolutionise how data is viewed.

The new Instant readout feature on VictronConnect presents essential livestatus information from a Bluetooth-equipped device as soon as it is detected, without needing to connect to the device.

Once enabled, the optional feature presents all essential information under the device name and can be collapsed or expanded as required. Groups of devices, such as batteries, can be compared and the upgrade also brings an extended Bluetooth range.

Stored Trends

The Trends feature has also been upgraded to provide historical data. Available for devices such as battery monitors and solar charge controllers, Trends presents an overview of real-time data, allowing two data sources to be compared.

Data is stored for up to 45 days (or six months in the case of smart battery sense), enabling performance to be reviewed before and after a significant change.

At maximum history span, the recorded observation interval is 30 minutes.

Widgets

Upgrades to the Victron Remote Management system include the additions of widgets to give instant access to headline data such as state of charge, load, solar harvest and grid power – with options to add tank-level, temperature, ambient climate information and electric vehicle charging progress.

The widget window can be tethered to the home page and users can find more detailed information in the VRM web portal.

Exide Technologies expanded its marine and leisure equipment Li-Ion range in 2022 with six new batteries.

function for ease-of-use and short recharge times which will work even if the temperature dips as low as -20°C.

The battery will automatically recharge once the temperature reaches 0°C and has a short recharge time.

A Bluetooth function runs parallel with Exide’s digitalisation strategy giving users control of either one or multiple batteries’ key features and performance levels.

The advanced battery management system (BMS) provides protection against

misuse. BMS alarms are sent to the app and stored, and the user is alerted.

The batteries are certified for safe use and transport and adhere to European regulations.

NEW ALL-PURPOSE BATTERY

Ecobat’s new RT 12V Series battery is an all-purpose lithium-ion battery module developed with a lithium iron phosphate cell.

The battery has an embedded battery management system, and its mechanical design has been developed to provide safety, high reliability and no maintenance.

It has in-built heating film technology that Ecobat says will perform at temperatures as low as -40°C.

The module is lightweight and developed to give superior performance in cold weather.

The Ecobat EBL 100 is another new battery from the manufacturer.

It is a 12V 100Ah lithiumion phosphate deep cycle battery and designed as a drop-in replacement for all the batteries with the BCI

Group 31 form factor.

A built-in Bluetooth feature allows users to monitor the battery’s state of charge and the battery’s RS485 and CANBUS communication protocol allows users to build their own high-end smart minigrid system.

It has an IP66 rated enclosure to prevent leaks and dirt getting into the battery which can be opened for future maintenance and modifications.

The battery has more than 6,000 cycle charges (80% DoD).

Eco concrete wins award

An experiment to boost restoration efforts of the seagrass for use in marine regeneration projects has reached an important stage in its trials in Falmouth Harbour.

HARBOUR HELPS WITH REGENERATION PROJECT

An innovative concrete has won the 2022 International Smart & Sustainable Startup Award in the biodiversity category of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina competition.

ECOncrete, developed by an Israeli startup of the same name, is a unique product which can store carbon and provide a home for marine life, making it an ideal material for marina construction.

“What an honour it is for us to get this prize, especially in the biodiversity category,” said Philippe Leblanc, European sales manager at ECOncrete.

“Our company developed and produces a unique bioenergy concrete technology designed to promote the marine environment and biodiversity with a range of options to help build responsible coastal and marine constructions. We are convinced we have a solution to help build the marinas of the future.”

The ECOncrete solution consists of three core elements that work together to decrease the ecological footprint and enable the growth of marine life on concrete infrastructures.

This growth of organisms such as oysters, corals and barnacles acts as a ‘biological glue’, enhancing the strength and durability of structures, increasing stability and longevity.

ECOncrete has so far been used in a number of projects such as in the design and construction of the pier at IGY Malaga Marina in Spain and to provide breakwaters at a variety of ports around the world. The competition is supported by Bombardier, MB92 and Xerjoff among others.

The harbour is using a ‘Seavive Pod’, designed and modified by Bournemouth University student Alex Croasdell, that has been found to rot down seagrass seedpods to nurture the release of seeds so that they can be used in projects to replenish and renew seagrass beds.

The Seavive design3D printed by Niall Jones using recycled plastic - is now suspended below the Falmouth Haven pontoons for ease of access and contains seagrass seed pods harvested from the Flushing seagrass bedwith necessary permissions gained by Falmouth Harbour from Natural England.

It is backed by a partnership including Falmouth Harbour, Falmouth-based GAC UK and marine restoration

charity Our Only World.

The prototype Seavive pod will be retrieved from the Falmouth Haven pontoon in November and the released seeds used as part of an educational session within the wider Cornwall Flood Forum taking place in November.

The seeds will be monitored for signs of germination in Spring 2023.

The Seavive project is among several Falmouth Harbour partnership initiatives for regenerating seagrass meadows. Trials of the harbour’s AMS eco-mooring systems are

Further Boat Lifts are currently in build or in the final stages of design for both independent and marina group sites.

“There is a growing theme of customers wishing to look outside of the ‘usual names’ for equipment that lasts and is fully supported throughout the lifespan,” explained James.

Earlier this year, Boat Lift delivered what is believed to be the world’s first fully electric boat hoist to a site in a Rochelle and is currently building a larger model for an Italian customer.

The initial machine has a 15T capacity and is powered by lithium batteries with no diesel and no hydraulics

and has around a two-hour recharge time.

The larger machine will be a 40T version. The electric hoists are remote controlled and can be moved around a yard for lifting and manoeuvring of boats.

And the company is gaining traction in the UK, with numerous Boat Lift machines in the UK and

Ireland, according to James Burnell, operations director of P&D Marine Services - part of the P&D Marine Group - which partnered with Boat Lift in 2019 to further complement its existing range of suppliers and services.

“Boat Lift has been producing boat yard equipment since 2006, and since then has gained an excellent reputation in delivering high quality and reliable machines, that is fully backed up with industry leading customer service.”

The hoists are built and customised to order and available for all capacities and are suitable for boats up to 100 tonnes.

Boat Lift is closely linked to the automation industry, designing and supplying equipment to several household brand names.

SBS Trailers and boatfolk have teamed up to provide SBS Trailers in boatfolk’s marinas nationwide.

Boaters can buy trailers at all 11 marinas, with boatfolk’s marine engineering and repair division, boatcare helping customers with the necessary adjustments to their trailer.

The team will also give customers advice on getting going safely and with confidence.

Both businesses say they have a shared vision to make it as easy as possible for boaters to get on the water and enjoy stress-free boating.

NEW FLOATING SOLAR TECHNOLOGY

French start-up HelioRec has opened a seed funding round, the proceeds of which will be used to further advance its floating solar technology and business.

The seed round, for an undisclosed amount, will support HelioRec’s team in achieving its next milestone – proving the company’s floating solar technology will work at scale.

The company has developed environmentally friendly electric charging stations for the maritime sector based on floating solar power plants.

Unused water is converted into a clean energy source through a floating offshore solar cell system with the main objectives being to save land area in a marina or port area, generate a clean energy source, establish

fast charging stations for electric vehicles and electric boats, and provide new digital services for data prediction and optimisation.

Recycled plastic is used to manufacture the floating systems, which reduces system costs and also the carbon footprint.

The collected funding from the round will be mainly used for the expansion of the manufacturing line, product certification and intellectual property protection.

In addition, part of the funding will be directed towards the development of software.

The funding follows on from the company winning the Prince Albert II Foundation, German Ocean Foundation and boot Düsseldorf Ocean Tribute Award earlier in 2022.

“At SBS Trailers we offer a superior service to match our high-quality trailers, our absolute goal is to make our customer’s life easier,” said Andy Wyer, SBS Trailers MD. “Working with boatfolk makes our products even more accessible and will get customers on the water quicker and more efficiently.”

Nick Gill, head of boatcare by boatfolk added: “At boatfolk, we’re on a mission to make it easy for anyone who wants to get on the water to enjoy every second afloat. That’s why we launched our boatcare division a number of a years ago, and why our new partnership with SBS Trailers is incredibly important to us.”

SBS Trailers has been manufacturing trailers in the UK for more than 60 years with its range including trailers for motorboats, ribs, sailing boats and jet skis plus yacht stands and marina trolleys.

Pontoon manufacturer

Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) has celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The company was born out of Banagher Precast Concrete (BPC), an Irish precast concrete manufacturer which began producing concrete jetties in 1990.

ICMS was set up by Oliver and Claire Shortall in 2002, while Oliver was still working for BPC.

“When I joined Banagher, it had just started developing floating jetties,” he said. “I could see that there was a growing market for pontoons and jetties in Ireland, but Banagher was focused on other sectors so when the opportunity arose for me to buy the jetty side of the business, we started Inland and Coastal.”

Based in Co. Offlay, the company has also opened offices in Lossiemouth, Scotland and Hamble, England.

The company now

Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour Group has teamed up with Plymouth City Council and University of Plymouth to clean waste from the harbour.

The trials - taking place at Sutton Harbour, Cattewater and Turnchapel marinas - are part of a Preventing Plastic Pollution project and uses a remote operated Waste Shark from Ranmarine.

In addition to the Waste Shark, Sutton Harbour already deploys a dedicated litter boat, operated by the company to survey and sweep the harbour several times a day.

“We are pleased to welcome the Waste Shark trials to Sutton Harbour and to be a part of Plymouth’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution in our waters,” said Sutton Harbour Group harbourmaster, Mark Veale. “We already spend a great deal of time and money on keeping Sutton Harbour clean and this is a great addition to the overall efforts.

The technology will be monitored and adapted throughout the trial so the Waste Sharks can eventually collect waste autonomously without the need for human intervention.

Partners involved with the Waste Shark projects will be collaborating on their findings to work together at reducing the level of plastic pollution in Plymouth’s waters.

The teams are working in collaboration with robotics and artificial intelligence companies MSUBS and Marina AI.

Having launched his first business during the financial crash of 2007/2008, Richard Dove had no qualms about launching his second business – BoatLife boat show – during a global pandemic.

Richard’s career in the events industry began when he was 19 looking for a temporary summer job to fund his travel plans.

But instead of following through on his idea of travelling the world and then settling down on a paradise island, surfing and playing guitar in the sunset, the temp job turned permanent, and Richard ended up working for an events support company with clients including Southampton International Boat Show and the former London Boat Show.

“It was an agency that helps organisers to run events from an operational perspective, from health and safety, floor layouts, how to lay out the show in the best possible way to make the most of the venue, build up schedules to stand designs.”

A few years’ later, Richard decided it was time to leave the agency and set up his own more digitally focused business, Showplans.

“The business allowed show organisers to lay out the stands themselves digitally and we went on to win a number of awards within the events industry.”

In 2016, Richard sold the business to a large American company with an agreement to carry on working with the organisation for three years.

And in 2019, he finally managed to go travelling and have his time sitting on a beach.

“I got married and we went travelling for about six months. We got locked

Richard Dove MD of BoatLife

down in Columbia trying to get into Peru a as the pandemic started; we tried to get out and got to the airport, but the flights were cancelled so we shared a taxi to the other side of the island and got an apartment right on the beach for three months.

“I had a lot of time to think about my future. How to make events more stable if the events industry ground to a halt; how to grow an allyear-round digital audience, connect with them and engage with them, so that if an event is cancelled, exhibitors can still engage with the audience.”

Arriving back in the UK in June 2019, Richard saw an opportunity to set up another boat show with all-year-round promotion.

“I used to do the floor plans for SIBS and LBS for about 16 years and with the ending of LBS saw a gap in the market for another show.

“I decided to organise a show pre-season, so it doesn’t conflict with Southampton Boat Show.

“I pitched the initial concept to five boat dealers in a Zoom call in 2020 and then spent five or six months putting together floor plans and marketing plans.

“It has been very tough. There’s high expectation from companies who want it to be popular and want to know it’s going to be busy.

“To build it from nothing has been a real struggle but I had contacts within

the marine industry, and I’m very interested in the sector. Even though I don’t have a boat yet, I love the industry and the water.”

Deciding that the show needed to be indoors and away from the South Coast which Richard believes is saturated with events, he decided to instead head for Birmingham, catering for the interest in boating in Wales, Scotland and the North of the country.

And Richard says one of the highest points of his career so far has been the support and welcome he’s received from a large number in the industry, while the lowest point has been the covid pandemic.

“Mets was cancelled, Dusseldorf was then cancelled, there was a lot of pessimism and downturn, everyone was on the fence when it came to shows and everything was very last minute.”

And he says one of the lessons he’s learnt is to try to not get complacent and sit back on your laurels, even when things look difficult and tough like going into pandemic.

“There will be opportunities, and you can come out the other side in great shape.

“Some people get too complacent in what they’re doing and don’t think outside the box.

“Others are too reserved.”

And he adds: ‘’If you think about doing something, push for it, rather than sitting back and saying it’s too complicated.”

And he recommends that everyone looks at ways to improve what they’re doing.

“When I was doing the floor plan stuff, it was a case of looking to see what everyone else is doing. Look at how you can come out of it and how you can do it in the best position.”
