The newly launched London Yacht Show has been postponed until 2020. In a statement, organisers Informa Global Events, said the decision had been made to ensure the delivery of a high quality on-water show, with the scale and breadth to attract full participation of the industries it is aimed at. The event was rebranded and relaunched earlier this year with a focus on the high-end boating and luxury goods market - building on the previous London On Water Show. “Since an initial burst of interest in the London Yacht Show, take-up has slowed from some segments of the industry and from luxury brands,” said Andrew Williams, president maritime group.
“With just over a month to go until the planned launch, overall commitment to the event is not at the level required to deliver a show with the profile, scale and market breadth the industry asked for and deserves in London. “Following extensive consultation with key stakeholders, we therefore believe it is in everyone's interest to postpone the show until next year.” And he said efforts will now be focused on delivering a 'great event and experience' in 2020. The London Yacht Show was scheduled to take place at St. Katharine Docks from May 8 - 12 2019. It was intended to provide the opportunity to show yachts on water, alongside a floating luxury pavilion.
CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON NEW MARINA Edinburgh Marina has been granted its marine works licence by Marine Scotland. The grant of the licence enables construction of a new 373 berth marina which, once complete, will provide 24/7 access to the sea at all states of tide. “The grant of the marine works licence is one small step for Edinburgh Marina and a giant leap for the city of Edinburgh as work can now begin on creating a high-class facility for boating enthusiasts,” said Kevin Fawcett of Edinburgh Marina Holdings. “We are delighted that Marine Scotland has put its faith in our project which will enable Edinburgh to compete for a large share of the country's £3.7bn marine tourism industry.” The marina has been designed to surpass the Yacht Harbour Association's 5 Gold Anchor rating and will include a

purpose-built clubhouse with brasserie restaurant and bar and a chandlery shop. There will also be a serviced boatyard and dry-stack operation. The new marina will be located in Granton's Western Harbour and will form the centrepiece of the Edinburgh Marina development which will include more than 1,850 new homes and a new spa and conference hotel. The Clubhouse will have male and female changing and lock rooms and a private function and dining area. Kevin added: “It must be said that Edinburgh Marina is more than a place to sail. Our vision from the outset was to create a waterside destination that takes advantage of Edinburgh's rich cultural appeal, whilst opening up a new route to Edinburgh waterfront's stunning stretch of coastline.”

LASERPERFORMANCE LICENCE IS REVOKED
As we put April to bed, I would like to thank media sales manager Lyndsay Hall who is off to pastures new. I have worked with Lyndsay for the last two and a half years and over this time, we have both learnt an incredible amount and hopefully you will agree, continued to take the magazine forward. Lyndsay is leaving to pursue one of her passions – food and drink – further so I can only wish her all the luck and success possible in her new role. I will miss working with Lyndsay but I’m very pleased that her replacement has already been appointed – Fliss Pitcher - who joins Boating Business having spent more than ten years in the media industry focusing on both client and agency sales. The seamless handover has provided Lyndsay with the opportunity to show Fliss the ropes and introduce her to many of you. I’m sure she will be a great asset to Boating Business and together we can continue to build on and develop a positive future for the brand. I look forward to working with Fliss in the future.

I am not a sailor - my idea of sailing is sitting on a deck with a G&T - however I have never felt like I didn’t belong. Thank you to each and every one of you who has taken the time to teach me about not just your products, but how the industry itself works and to those who have become friends as well as customers. By the time you read this, my replacement, Fliss will have started and I will have had the chance to introduce her to many of you. I’m sure you will all be as welcoming to her as you were to me. I have very much valued my time as Boating Business sales manager and I shall miss working with you all.

The International Laser Class Association (ILCA) has revoked the licence of long-time builder of the Laser dinghy, LaserPerformance (LP). ILCA believes that the manufacturer breached the terms of the Laser Construction Manual Agreement by failing to ensure the identical nature of all Laser class boats, regardless of
where they are built. “We had to move ahead in order to protect the level of competition and the investment for the 14,000 members of the International Laser Class and the more than 50,000 sailors around the world who regularly sail the Laser dinghy,” said class president, Tracy Usher. And she said the ICLA was left with ‘no option’

after the builder’s refusal to allow inspection of the boats being built in their manufacturing facility. LP has called the ICLA’s claims ‘falsehoods’ and ‘misleading’. The contract between the two organisations is subject to an agreement dating back to 1998 allowing ILCA to use the Laser trademark. This is due to be renewed on August 31 2019. In a statement LP asserts ILCA has ‘steadfastly’ refused to renew the agreement and this has led to the manufacturer refusing inspection. CONSENT LP also states that it allows inspection by other regulatory bodies and ILCA is not legally able to seek new manufacturers for Laser products in LP territory without LP’s consent. ILCA says it expects the disruption to be minimal or non-existent with executive secretary, Eric Faust, emphasising that the 2020 Olympics and other major ILCA events will be unaffected. However LP points out that the 2024 Olympics will be affected, pointing out that France is in a LP region and therefore only LP boats would be authorised. LP’s UK-based facility was the ILCA-approved builder producing boats for most of Europe, Asia and the Americas.

FIRST ELECTRIC BOAT FROM SPIRIT YACHTS BARRUS ADDS WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates MarineMax pushed the envelope by holding a Virtual Boat Show which it described as “the world's largest online used boat sale with over 300 units specifically discounted for this event.” The sales pitch for the event included “browse the world's largest selection of used boats from the best brands including Sea Ray, Azimut, Galeon, Boston Whaler, Harris Pontoons, Scout and more.” The Virtual Boat Show was a three-day event held in March from 10am - 5pm each day. During this show event attendees were able to experience multiple models from multiple brands, interact with other boating enthusiasts, all at their leisure. Exclusive pricing, trade evaluations, financing options and unique benefits limited to this event were available to all attendees. The effort and research done when shopping for big-ticket items such as boats is considerably different from shopping for small inexpensive items. Add to that the risk and confidence required makes online purchasing/ sales become far more challenging. If the event proves to be successful for all parties involved then it could herald a dramatic shift in the boat sales process in the future. It's not hard to imagine a consolidation of independent brokers and dealers into regional groups holding their own virtual boat shows which might include new boats. The impact of such a move would have significant effects on all aspects of our industry.

Spirit Yachts has begun construction of its first electric yacht, a 13.4m vessel due to launch early 2020. The Spirit 44E, has two solar panels integrated into her deck, colour matched to the teak. These will charge OceanVolt 48VDC 30.4kWh batteries which will power an Oceanvolt SD15 electric drive. “From afar, the Spirit 44E will look like any other Spirit sailing yacht,” said Spirit Yachts head designer Sean McMillan. “Low freeboards, long overhangs, flush decks and the timeless beauty of quality wooden craftsmanship. Up close, she will display signs of the sailing yachts of the future.” Hydrogeneration via the propeller is used to regenerate the batteries while sailing. In addition, Spirit Yachts is working with OneSails GBR (East) to develop a solar solution for the Spirit 44E's sail wardrobe.

Webasto pump to heat and cool the yacht using minimal power. All lighting is LED and a Webasto 4.2gallon 115v/750W heater will provide hot water. There are no hydrocarbons onboard and any cooking will be done on a spirit stove. “With the 44E, we are taking the learnings from the 34m Spirit 111 and applying the same principles to a smaller yacht,” said Spirit Yachts MD Nigel Stuart.

KEVIN ROUGH My part in his downfall by Spike Milligan or anything that has the ability to make you laugh out loud. How I got into this industry... Long story, but after getting punched in the face by my boss, on a General Building Youth Training Scheme (YTS) back in 1988, I walked out. I joined Chemring as a trainee accounts clerk. 30 years later after transferring to McMurdo and subsequently Daniamant I'm still here.
One thing the industry needs less of is... Poor quality products and bypassing rules and standards. We're in the business of manufacturing lifesaving appliances - a last resort - they have to work.
Best advice I've ever received... Regardless of your position or anyone else's you should still treat people as you would wish to be treated; with respect.
Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... 'I don't know', most of the time you do know, or can find the answer with a little thought or help. Try instead 'I don't know, but I'll find out for you'.
You should really read... So many books and genres but let's say; Adolph Hitler:
Best place I've been... Kenya on safari when I got married to Anne
Don't worry about... Guess it's the old 'don't sweat the small stuff' advice. I probably need to take heed of that. Favourite meal... I'm not a big dessert fan, but if there is a creme brûlée on a menu it's a done deal. One thing I couldn't live without... My family. How I cope with stress... Walking the dog, music, running or a large glass/ bottle of Rioja. Something about you that people might be surprised by... That first job at Chemring...I had a perm and a pony tail. MARKETING CHRIS JONES is founder of the Knot Agency As I write, the situation with Brexit remains unclear and the impact on business unknown. At present the only certainty is uncertainty. However, from a marketing perspective the basic activities to push your business on remain unchanged. In fact, ensuring you carry out the fundamentals really well has never been more important. As we compete on a more global stage, even when offering a seemingly identical service or product to our peers, differentiating from the competition is vital. BUSINESSMATTERS DAVID SMEDLEY: Head of employment at Walker Morris LLP
WHAT DO EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW? 2019 is likely to be an eventful year for employment law due to the government's recently announced Good Work Plan. Heralded as 'the biggest package of workplace reforms for over 20 years', it is the culmination of the Taylor Review transferred into working practices. The timetable is not fully laid out but as 2019 progresses, more draft legislation will be published. Most of the following will take effect in 2020. EMPLOYMENT STATUS TESTS The government wants differences between the status tests in employment law and tax law reduced to a minimum. As recent case law has shown, it can be notoriously difficult to determine whether an individual or self-employed contractor is a worker or an employee. This can lead to significant business risk and exposure to claims for back payment of wages. MORE PREDICTABLE CONTRACTS AFTER 26 WEEKS There will be a right for workers to request a more
The Good Work Plan proposes new measures designed to improve enforcement, including a process for publishing the names of employers who fail to pay tribunal awards on time and an increase (from £5,000 to £20,000) to the financial penalties for employers who commit an 'aggravated breach' of employment rights predictable contract after 26 weeks. It is likely that this will be similar to the current right to request flexible working; this will be clarified in future draft legislation. There is no proposal to ban the use of zero-hours contracts. TIME PERIOD REQUIRED TO BREAK CONTINUITY OF EMPLOYMENT This will be increased from one week to four weeks. Effectively, this could mean that someone intermittently working for an employer once a month could gain continuous service. Continuous service is important because it determines certain rights such as to claim unfair dismissal or a redundancy payment.
THRESHOLD TO REQUEST INFORMATION AND CONSULTATION ARRANGEMENTS The government wishes to encourage higher levels of employee engagement in business. It has issued draft legislation reducing the threshold required to request information and consultation arrangements from 10% to 2% of the workforce from April 2020. ENDING THE 'SWEDISH DEROGATION' FOR AGENCY WORKERS The Swedish derogation excludes agency workers from the right to equal pay with permanent employees in the same role if they have an employment contract which guarantees pay between assignments.
The draft Agency Workers (Amendment) Regulations 2019 are due to come into force on April 6 2020 and will remove this derogation from the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 to give agency workers a right to pay parity with permanent comparable employees after 12 weeks. THE RIGHT TO A WRITTEN STATEMENT OF TERMS TO WORKERS The Employment Rights (Employment Particulars and Paid Annual Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2018 are due to come into force on April 6 2020. This: 5 Brings in a right to be provided with a written statement of terms on the first day of employment, rather than within the first two months. 5 Adds to the amount of prescribed information which a written statement must contain. 5 Amends the Working Time Regulations 1998 to increase the reference period for determining an average week's pay (when calculating statutory holiday pay) from 12 weeks
to 52 weeks. This will protect workers with no normal working hours whose pay fluctuates. In addition, all workers must be provided with an itemised pay statement from April 2019. The Employment Rights Act 1996 (Itemised Pay Statement) (Amendment) Order 2018 will require itemised payslips to contain the number of hours paid for where a worker is paid hourly. IMPROVED ENFORCEMENT The Good Work Plan proposes new measures designed to improve enforcement, including a process for publishing the names of employers who fail to pay tribunal awards on time and an increase (from £5,000 to £20,000) to the financial penalties for employers who commit an 'aggravated breach' of employment rights. WHAT NEXT? Now is a good time to identify which of the various measures will most impact your business. Firms should plan ahead and carry out preparatory work to enable their businesses to meet any challenges that arise.
BREXIT JONNO BARRETT: MD of Kudos Software
BREXIT IS BEING HANDLED TACTICALLY BY POLITICIANS Jonno Barrett, MD of Kudos Software, a provider of retail, job and project and fulfilment process systems to a number of business sectors that includes marine, sees Brexit as a “major long term move which is being handled with a totally tactical view by all the politicians. "It's bidding fair to be a disaster in the way it's being done.” His personal view is that the UK needs to be confident in what it is now - “a second

He says that “we gain more control by sharing; we'd do better to cut our cloth on that.” UNCERTAINTY Kudos sells systems that require a capital expenditure decision and any uncertainty such as an election, hits sales - Jonno says that “Brexit has been a two-year (so far) famine in our main markets.”
The company's new business is suffering, though existing customers continue to seek efficiencies that Kudos says it can provide “it's a tactical world just now,” says Jonno, adding: “the pipeline is good, the discussions are healthy, but the closing isn't happening.” INCONSISTENCIES As for the future, Jonno believes that Brexit will continue to affect his business, noting that “it'll
make exporting in to our nearest markets harder because of regulatory inconsistencies and overall I think the UK will suffer.” He says that as a cruising sailor he will be faced with all sorts of new and unwelcome hurdles - his boat is currently in Helsinki and VAT and other
red tape is a worry. “I don't welcome the return of the booze cruise and I think this [Brexit] may well impact on boat ownership and usage in home markets.” He ends by noting that he's “about as optimistic as a snail on the Olympic 100m starting line...”

LINK LIFOS BATTERIES FOR MORE POWER 8 Solar Technology’s LiFOS battery can be linked to increase power
Photo: Solar Technology
The ability to link lithium batteries to give additional power is proving popular with boat owners, according to Solar Technology. The company has received much interest from the marine sector for its LiFOS 68Ah battery which can be linked in series of four to generate up to 48 volts. Alternatively, the batteries can be linked in parallel to increase amp hours. Solar Technology's marketing manager, Caroline Rawlinson, said that "this allows you to take advantage of the lightweight power and high cycling capabilities of the lithium batteries when you need more than the energy the current single battery can produce." LiFOS uses lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) which makes the batteries ideal for voltage sensitive and high cycling applications including leisure, commercial and off
grid renewable energy. Weighing 7.8kg, the new LiFOS 100Ah is 77% lighter than a comparable 120Ah lead acid battery and at 190mm high and 175mm wide, is compact enough to fit into small storage spaces. The battery management system built into LiFOS helps
ensure it can be charged and discharged up to six times more than alternative options thus reducing the price per cycle. The LiFOS battery is monitored through a free Apple or Android Bluetoothenabled app. Once connected to a smart device, the app will also send users a
reminder to put LiFOS on charge once the battery has been discharged to 30%. The battery is fitted with removable terminal posts so that the ring terminals can be connected directly to the terminal plates and operates in temperatures of -20 to +60°C and in any orientation.

VETUS’S NEW THRUSTER DOUBLES AS CHARGER Global manufacturer of marine engines and generators, Vetus, is launching a new version of its Bow Pro thruster which doubles as a battery charger when the thruster is not in use. The Bow Pro Boosted 57-13 series of thrusters features an internal charger that enables the thruster to boost output to up to double the voltage. The thruster can be connected to 12V or 24V power supplies and when the thruster is not in use, the built-in charger automatically recharges the battery. Pieter Feenstra, senior sales manager at Vetus, said that the six new thrusters have evolved from the original Bow Pro. By combining features like the unlimited runtime, full-proportional control, built-in charger and no maintenance on the brushless motor, the thrusters are the ideal solution for almost every boat, particularly charter vessels, offering significant advantages when compared with other thrusters. As well as connecting to the internal charger, the Vetus motor controller also regulates the maintenancefree induction motors without carbon brushes, ensuring quiet operation with a runtime limited only by the size of the battery pack installed. Operating with CAN-Bus protocol, Bow Pro Boosted thrusters have a choice of two different control panels - the fullyproportional basic panel and the fully-proportional panel with local and hold function for easy docking which allows the boat to be held alongside to pick up or drop off crew or dock single-handed.

BGB SILS has joined with Aquamare Marine as it prepares to launch its new underwater lighting system to the market. The Submersible Inductive Lighting System features induction contactless exterior lights which are operated through an app on any smart device. Using electromagnetic induction, the system wirelessly transmits electrical energy between two coils which are attached to a boat with marine-grade adhesive. "Some people in the industry were sceptical that we could product something that requires no drilling on surfaces such as the hull [but] we were more than happy to rise to the challenge," said BGB's marketing manager, Jason Tupper. "These lighting units give owners reassurance that their yacht is not going to be damaged and cause a leak, which can happen when an electrician has to drill holes." As well as choosing a colour to match their mood, boat owners can adjust the lighting to attract fish and navigate at night. The wifi zone is around 50m and the system can be controlled through existing wifi technology on board. “This is an exciting long-term opportunity to work with BGB because the SILS product offers something completely different to anything else on the market," said Mike Sommerfeld, Aquamare Marine director.

NEW DRONE ALLOWS UNDERWATER INSPECTIONS Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) company, Chasing Innovation, has unveiled a new underwater drone with camera that allows boat owners to conduct belowthe-surface inspections. The second-generation Gladius Mini ROV can also be used by yacht clubs to survey their docks and other underwater structures. The drone can also be used whilst at leisure to view fish, wrecks and seabeds. NO NEED TO HIRE DIVERS Inspecting hulls might mean hiring a diver or, worse, moving the vessel to a dry dock. The Gladius Mini ROV means that boat owners can save themselves these costs. Jason Huntley, business development manager at Flying Drones, UK distributor for the ROV, told Boating Business that “below the surface inspections of hulls, motors, etc. can all be made
within moments by the boat owners themselves without the boat needing to be lifted from the water or moved from its mooring.” The drone comes complete with a 4K UHD camera with 2 hour runtime and is suitable for use in both salt and fresh water.
app on to a smart phone or tablet which, when linked to the supplied controller, plays the camera's footage to the phone or tablet screen. Images can be recorded on board the drone with an integrated 64GB card and a further 64GB card is available for extra recording. 8 Chasing Innovation’s new ROV with camera allows boat owners to conduct under water inspections
WATCH ON YOUR SMART PHONE OR TABLET Usage of the drone is via a tether, which allows a depth and range of up to 100m. The tether connects the drone to a WiFi module above the water line which allows viewers to watch live
NEW VENT GIVES IMPROVED VENTILATION Kayospruce has introduced a new range of Vico Marine products, designed for improved ventilation and to give support to all boat covers, canopies and tents. The Boat Vent 3 (BV3) is the third generation of the product, designed as part of Vico Marine's boat cover support system. The product allows the boat cover to vent properly enabling moisture to escape with the resulting reduction in mildew build up. The vent has been developed to prevent rain or animals to enter the boat cover. It is made in the States from UVresistent materials and is available in black or white. It can be used with Sauleda acrylic canvas and Marlen polyester fabrics that are available from Kayospruce. ADJUSTABLE The boat cover support system includes extendable support poles made using anodised, ribbed, heavy duty aluminium. The poles are combined with Vico's aluminium diecast collars, designed for

When it comes to fittingout, Suffolk Yacht Harbour uses products from Wessex Resins and Adhesives for jobs such as bonding teak decks to fibre glass gel coats and bonding plywood sub-decks on timber boats. The boatyard is able to carry out repairs or refurbishment work to glass fibre, wooden or steel boats up to 70ft overall length. “We work on a wide variety of boats,” says Robert Clarke, SYH workshop supervisor. “From brand new modern yachts to those over 100 years old.” He added: “We use West System epoxy on a wide spectrum of exterior fitout, from small repairs to timber and glass fibre through to new decks.”
And he explained that many surveyors request the use of West System products for major repairs, specifying the use of epoxy resins rather
than polyester. “That's because West System epoxy has a much better secondary bond than polyester to GRP,” said Robert.
The boatyard also uses Wessex products for faring and for treating boats that
have suffered from osmosis. “We peel off a layer of gel coat and use West System epoxy and associated fillers to reprofile the bottom of the boat and then use the coating system to reseal,” explained Robert. According to David Johnson, Wessex Resins and Adhesives sales director, the company is seeing an upward trend in the use of West System G/Flex epoxy. “It's now the 'go to' product for high strength bonding of dissimilar timber and some plastics,” he said.
SPOT OFF ACHIEVES FANTASTIC RESULTS Active listening and problem solving is central to the August Race’s overarching core values, according to CEO and export director Sarah Wallbank. As such, new products are regularly developed including Spot Off. “We heard a lot of professional users and endusers alike having problems with mould spotting on rib tubes and rubbing strakes so we developed a targeted sporicidal mould spot treatment that is achieving fantastic results,” said Sarah. The company launched its next-generation polymer sealer coats last year and says the reception has been 'fantastic'. “Users like the ease of application, the glassy finish and the reduction of maintenance following application of the products,” said Sarah. “That,

coupled with the 100% biodegradability has ensured an immediate following.” The August Race range was launched in Greece earlier this year with the sealer coats particularly popular. “The biggest issues are the Greek sunshine and
mould build up,” said August Race's Greek distributor Akis Zissis. “The protective August Race sealer coats are proving incredibly popular as the boats are left in the water and prone to be splashed and get dirty quite quickly.”

NEW CANOPY CAN BE FITTED TO ANY BOAT C-Quip has developed a new carbon canopy system that allows a sunshade to be fitted to virtually any boat. The system includes a set of four carbon poles that are available in different lengths, base sockets and a canopy and can be mounted in several different ways. “A variety of configurations are achievable,” said Ian Cooke, C-Quip MD. “The hardware is stainless steel with two deck mount options and a rail mount solution. “It can be free standing using the poles or the canopy can also be attached to a boats' superstructure such as a flybridge or bimini for instance meaning the options are limitless.” The system is suitable for a raft of craft from open day boats to larger cruisers and can be retro fitted for the aftermarket or installed by boatbuilders as a standard part of the design.

Customers can buy the appropriate mounts and poles for their specific application. Canopies can be made to customers' own designs and in their choice of material. It will be available from Spring 2019. 8 C-Quip’s new carbon canopy system can be free standing or attached to a boat’s superstructure

FRAMELESS WINDOW Houdini Marine's new Frameless-Illusion window system combines the look of direct bonded glazing with the practical fitting advantages of an aluminium clamp frame system. The product provides a modern flush look with fully protected glass edges, due to the use of a PVC gasket. Glass is bonded to the frame during manufacturing under controlled conditions, to allow quick and easy installation. As the glass is spaced away from the frame a true thermal break is created. Sales manager, Stuart Curtis, explained that the product is quicker, easier and cheaper to fit than a direct bonded window. The system is installed from inside the vessel with an internal clamp frame system. The clamp frame is fastened from inside the vessel. Screwheads are concealed by a plastic trim, so fastenings are hidden. Additionally, no structural modifications are required to create a glass recess. “The rigid gasket surrounding the glass edge protects it from damage, therefore no expensive sealant adhesives are required,” said Stuart. “There is a neat finish, rather than uneven tooled off sealant.” Other benefits include the fact that that no overnight sealant curing is required as glass is bonded prior to delivery. This means a reduction in fitting times and installation costs. If the window system is damaged the gasket can be easily removed, the frame unclamped and a replacement window fitted, with minimal downtime. Protection from the elements is robust and in addition, the frames will not corrode as they are not exposed to seawater.

CHALLENGE The company, based in Lee-on-the-Solent on the south coast, was approached by the Historic Ships Conservation Works Coordinator, Roy Smith, in October 2018. The historic warship, built in 1860, was in need of new covers and Tecsew had worked with the dockyard in the past. Ally Bland, director of Tecsew, said that finding suitable material that was fire retardant and of the right texture to complement Warrior's age was paramount. "It was a real challenge and we knew they would be very strict on quality. But in the end we triumphed and it has been a real honour to be selected for this project," she said. The first stage has been so successful that Tecsew has been asked to provide more covers and is now the preferred supplier for further conservation work at the dockyard, including for Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory.

Marine textile company, Tecsew, has helped protect England's naval history with the restoration of an iconic warship. Stationed at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, HMS Warrior has been fitted with a new cover for her vent cowlings, skylight covers, stairway covers and funnel coats and rams. Tecsew's MD, John Bland, said that helping to conserve a vital part of Portsmouth's naval history was a defining moment. "We were very honoured to be involved in such a prestigious, historical project which leveraged our extensive skills within the marine canvas industry," he said.

Ocean Safety has introduced adjustable jackstays, eliminating the need to customise premeasured stays to be the right length for the boat. The new jackstays are looped at either end so they can be hitched to cleats or eyes fore and aft along the deck. The 25mm Ocean Safety Jackstay is available in 8, 12 and 16m lengths, from which they can be adjusted to the required length. A UV resistant webbing has a Kevlar coating along the edges for increased durability. A retro-reflective strip enables night time visibility. The adjustment buckle is sleeved in neoprene to protect decks.

MTA AWARDS
Kevin Cooney, Cooney Marine founder, has been awarded the Boating Business Lifetime Achievement Award. The presentation took place at the annual British Marine Trades Association and Boating Business awards dinner held in conjunction with the inaugural BM Expo in association with HPi Verification Services. Kevin founded the business as a part-time venture in a pub stable in 1968. A chance encounter led to Cooney's first marine customer - John Sadler - and Kevin soon found he was welcomed with open arms when customers found he could offer stainless steel for boats.

PROFILE
PIP WOODS ROCKLEY WATERSPORTS MD
(Pip's a qualified RYA coach assessor, a RYA centre inspector and RYA powerboat instructor). DIFFERENT CLASSES Unlike many in the marine industry, while sailing was a passion from an early age, Pip's career didn't begin in this sector. “My dad was a keen sailor and when we moved from St Albans to Poole and dad worked as a centre manager at Rockley, I spent pretty much every day on the water working my way through the differing classes of boats. As we see now with teenagers, at around age 14/15 I dropped the sailing as my passion for hockey and demands of schoolwork took

over. After leaving school I was keen to earn money straight away, so rather than go to university, trained in accountancy while working for Abbey Life.” Pip gave up her final year of accountancy training after being offered a promotion at the firm and in true 'what goes around comes around' style, 13 years later took redundancy to travel for a year, returning to Rockley in 2003 to discuss career opportunities with owner, Peter Gordon. “I started volunteering and when Rockley was selected as a pilot centre for the Onboard Scheme, part-funded by the RYA and Rockley, I became the first onboard development officer.” MD ROLE Pip's role was to encourage young people to take to the water and with a network of PE teacher friends, local schools soon got involved. “Peter could see there was a clear role for me and I moved from sales to sales/marketing and a directorship in 2011.” In 2014, Pip was asked to take over the MD role. OFSTED INSPECTION Rockley offers a two-year sixth form BTEC course, run by qualified teachers and instructors, meaning Pip also has to manage an OFSTED inspection (something not many businesses in this sector will experience). “We partner with a local school but run the whole programme here for over 100 students who come out as qualified instructors and work in the industry or head for university.
We also run a 12-week scholarship programme.” Always keen to give something 'a try', Pip plans to open a land-based activity centre and is currently on the search for new UK premises to accommodate 100 students by 2020. “We'll offer climbing, archery etc. Schools are crying out for this type of facility and we're well-placed to deliver it.” Similarly plans are in place for Rockley Point. “We're going to flatten the existing building, and subject to planning permission, will double our capacity, building new classrooms, residential accommodation and a sailing centre. This will leap us forward in our education programmes.” When most people say 'there's never a dull moment' in their role, we tend to think they're exaggerating, with Pip she's not. “Our success lies in having a team culture, seizing every opportunity and embracing change.”

If Rockley Watersports MD Pip Woods was able to bottle some of her phenomenal energy and share it with others, the marine sector would be full-throttle ahead of the UK PLC pack. Pip has an infectious enthusiasm to grow, diversify and future-proof the business, while juggling the logistics associated with welcoming 10,000 young people through Rockley's doors every year - in the UK and France - and managing 32 full-time and up to 200 seasonal staff. This would be enough to sap the energy of even the most elite athlete, but the human dynamo that is Pip is ready for more; in her spare time, she runs half marathons for charity, enters triathlons, plays hockey (in the 2018 Barcelona World Cup Pip played for England Masters bringing home a silver medal), is a member of a surf lifesaving club and on the British Marine board of directors. And this is before she finds time to ski, surf and enjoy other watersports

Rockley has three activity centres in south west France (all residential), two on the south coast in Poole (one non-residential) and one in Bartley in the midlands (non-residential). There's also a beachfront café and beach club.
