RNLI TO UPGRADE SEVERN CLASS
The RNLI is to upgrade each of its Severn class lifeboats at an average cost of around £1.25m each. The move is intended to extend the life of the lifeboats so they can continue saving lives at sea for another 25 years. The Severn entered service in 1996 and there are currently 44 of these 42 tonne lifesaving vessels in the charity’s fleet. With an operational lifespan of 25 years, these lifeboats are now approaching retirement age and are due to come off service soon. However, the charity’s in-house engineering team has worked in partnership with academic and industry experts and established that an upgrade will enable another 25 years’ service. “From shock-mitigating seats for the crew, to new survivor

space seating for casualties and a new daughter craft that can be launched quickly for rescuing casualties in shallow waters or close to rocks, the life extension upgrades will ensure our Severn class lifeboats are ready to save lives at sea for another 25 years,” explained Nick Fenwick, project manager for the RNLI’s Severn life extension programme. Six Severn class lifeboats will be upgraded initially, with the upgrades taking place at the RNLI’s All-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole, Dorset. The RNLI says the upgrade cost is significantly less than the cost of designing and building a brand-new class of lifeboat.
TOPAZ ARGO IS SELECTED BY ROYAL NAVY CCF Topper's Topaz Argo dinghy has been selected by the Royal Navy Combined Cadet Force (CCF) as a replacement for the Bosun dinghy. The news follows a two-year test programme from the CCF evaluating all options available. “The Boson has been the mainstay of sail training for the CCF for many years, however it was felt that a more userfriendly all-round boat fleet boat was needed,” explained Jon Manners, sales manager for Topper International. “The Topaz Argo offers a safe stable platform for learning to sail and then for the more experienced sailors it has a great performance with the options of symmetric and trapeze as well as the standard asymmetric spinnaker.” He added: “The adoption of the Topaz Argo marks a great step forward for the Royal Navy Combined Cadet Force with adoption of a new boat as their standard crewed sailing craft.

Topper International is very pleased to be working with the CCF to complete this project.” As part of the CCF program of development units entered teams in to the Southport 12-hour race, due to the number of entries the Topaz Argo was granted its own fleet status along with the two traditional classes. Topper will now deliver the fleet of dinghies to the Royal Navy Centres across the country as well as the CCF units based in schools. “Whilst there may be a few tearful eyes around the CCF as the old Bosuns are towed away, (I myself was taught to sail in a Bosun in 1974) we are confident that we have a superb all-round dinghy in which to train Cadets for the foreseeable future,” added CCF's principle boat officer Major Kevin Lillicrap. There are around 150 CCF sections in the UK that are sponsored by the RN.

VIEWPOINT TRIO TAKE ON TRIO OF Will we continue to use the latest technology? With the world’s population adjusting to restrictions imposed on them due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s clear that technology is playing an ever-increasing part in keeping people and businesses connected to each other. From FaceTime to Zoom to Skype and numerous others, we’re all able to carry on communicating. It makes me wonder what will happen once the restrictions are lifted. Will we all make a dash to our cars and be anxious to burn a tank-load of fuel and sit in traffic jams for hours on end to attend a face-to-face meeting? Or will we continue to make use of the technology available? Obviously face-to-face is always good but it does make me wonder how much time and money could be saved if we thought about alternatives. We’re all used to using the latest technology in our homes, cars and increasingly in our boats but it seems to me that with many people, making use of the latest technology in their business is almost an afterthought. And with the world shutting down due to the coronavirus restrictions and almost grinding to a halt, it continues to show us how important a good - easy to use and easy to navigate around with pictures and full product descriptions and all links working - website is, especially for those in the retail trade. One supplier I spoke to told me online purchases had ‘shot through the roof’ with so many people having extra time on their hands to surf the internet - borne out by the number of jokes and information flying about on social media. Another told me he was increasing his marketing spend so as to be in a strong position once we are free to move about at will again and use our craft. Obviously this isn’t possible for all businesses and for smaller companies and start-ups it’s probably harder than for those who are longer established. BONUS There has been some positive business news over the last few weeks however. In this issue there are articles on companies that have secured funding to expand and companies joining forces to progress and work on new projects. There was also an announcement from Liqui Moly that not only would no member of staff be made redundant during the restrictions but instead a pledge that everyone would receive an €1000 bonus. This was in stark contrast to other stories I’ve been told where staff have received emails telling them their pay will be docked. A little reassurance and compassion goes a long way. Hopefully most of us will ‘come out the other side’ to make the most of what’s left of the summer, escaping from our homes to enjoy being on the water.

"I couldn't move at last year's METS. I was hooked up to a TENS machine,” he said. “I'm feeling fitter. But not fit. We are aiming to get to more than 20 miles [per run] before event one. “This will involve running at all hours to get used to the 24-hour run.” HUGE EVENTS “All three of us love a challenge and to push ourselves,” Dave continued. “Each one of these events is considered huge, so to put all three together is something we don't think anyone else has ever done." The team has planned a money raising event on 30 May and is looking for donations to raffle. Keiran also adds that if any retailers and/or suppliers are interested in sponsoring one or all of the events, they will receive promotion via social media, on t-shirts, flags and more. New advances in micro electro-mechanical technology will open the door to a myriad of new opportunities for the maritime sector, according to an EU study. The â‚Ź1m KETmaritime project is being delivered by a consortium of seven partners across Europe in an effort to identify 'key enabling technologies' to support the future needs and demands of the Atlantic maritime industry. The project's latest report was authored by Spanish industrial design centre IDONIAL in collaboration with Marine South East in the UK and the INL. Project coordinator Ana Vila, from the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, said new advances in micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) are driving developments across marine navigation systems and autonomous exploration vehicles, as well

When it comes to sustainable marketing there are a number of easy changes you can make which won't cost a fortune and will help protect the environment for future generations. 5 Design - avoid putting event names and dates on literature and branded items. Choose robust, long lasting materials allowing multiple use. 5 Printing - use FSC certified paper, avoiding finish coatings/laminations which are not recyclable. In the office print double sided and only use colour when really needed. Make literature and other printed material available to download as pdf files. 5 Signage - choose aluminium signage which can be recycled at the end of its life and will last longer than plastic. 5 Giveaways - focus on gifts your target audience will find useful. Spend budget on high quality items. Source locally and opt for recycled/able options. 5 Packaging - Look for options which minimise waste. Biodegradable or recyclable options are ideal, although still hard to source. 5 Action - take part in or sponsor activities and organisations which aim to repair and protect the marine environment. Sustainability efforts can save money and be used for great PR. However, be genuine. If caught 'greenwashing' you risk reputation damage. There are many behavioural and physical changes possible to boost sustainability, but it is unrealistic to change everything overnight. Make constant incremental changes for a long term sustainable future.

WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based marketing agency James Nolan Associates To say we are currently living in interesting times is probably an understatement. However, it is worth remembering that 2019 provided some bright spots for us to focus on going forward. Examples include the recent NMMA announcement that retail unit sales of new powerboats are estimated to have held steady in 2019 at approximately 280,000 units, the second-highest total since 2007. The following new powerboat categories drove retail unit sales momentum in 2019. New personal watercraft sales are estimated to be up 6% to 73,000 units in 2019; with accessible entry-level price points, personal watercraft are often considered a gateway to boat ownership. Sales of new wake sport boats—popular for wake surfing and wakeboarding and attractive to new and younger boaters—are estimated to be up 6% to 11,000 units in 2019. New cruiser sales—boats between 22 and 32ft, popular for relaxing, entertaining and 'cruising'— are estimated to be up 3% to 9,000 units in 2019. Another is MarineMax, Inc, the nation's largest recreational boat and yacht retailer, that announced results for its first quarter ending December 31, 2019. Revenue increased 26%, or over U$62.2m, to U$304.2m while same-store sales were up over 24% in the quarter, supported almost entirely by similar growth in units sold. Two good waypoints going forward.

SEA START ORDERS NEW RIBS
Image: Sea Start
Marine breakdown service company Sea Start has placed an order for a number of new RIBs from Cowes-based Island RIBs to bolster its busy breakdown service fleets. The new order is for Island RIBs' 7.5m models, which Sea Start chose for their excellent sea keeping abilities and performance as a stable platform. They are therefore ideal for attending yachts and motorboats at sea whose engines have broken down. The RIB is also very well designed for towing. Sea Start's managing director, Nick Eales, explained: “2019 was a very busy year for Sea Start and we have seen a significant rise in our breakdowns
amongst our members. To cope with the increased number of call-outs and to keep our boats fully up to date we have made this decision to invest in the new RIBs for 2020.”

The Cruising Association’s inaugural open weekend has been hailed a success. Members and non-members were treated to a range of cruising knowledge and marine exhibitor expertise. In addition, nautical brands displayed their products and shared their knowledge together with a line-up of seminars. Exhibitors displayed everything from electronics to safety gear.

I don't think anyone in our industry would argue with the fact that we live in disrupted times. That's with the UK now in its transitory phase out of the EU, our customer base fast changing its preferences and desires and now with coronavirus causing worldwide issues. So, it's vital that, in times like these, our collective influence and voice is heard at the highest levels. British Marine, as the voice of our industry, presents a bold and focused response to lead its members through the uncertainty. Through our National Agenda's Representation pillar, we'll be standing up for the interests of you, the industry. Working with stakeholders, we're holding the Government's feet to the fire, making sure they deliver on manifesto promises and provide the right environment for businesses to thrive. This is a job which I hope has been made slightly easier with the recent appointment of Kelly Tolhurst MP as Maritime Minister. A marine surveyor and friend of BM, Kelly has spoken fondly of experiences working with her father, a boatbuilder and expressed her passion for getting more people out on the water. I look forward to working with Kelly and other MPs as part of the continued focus on the Government's Maritime 2050 Strategy as we pursue our National Agenda vision to create a thriving industry which delivers amazing on water experiences for everyone.

CHALLENGING CANAL REPAIRS COMPLETED 8 The Rothen Group helped repair a stretch of the Llangollen Canal after heavy rains
Photo: The Rothen Group
The Rothen Group (TRG) has been called upon to help repair a stretch of the Llangollen Canal after heavy rain caused substantial damage to the canal wall. A 20m section of the canal, which links north wales and south Cheshire, was damaged during Storm Miguel resulting in erosion that threatened to close the busy stretch near Marbury. When Kier was contracted by the Canal & River Trust to undertake the work, it became rapidly apparent that the rural location presented challenges. “The nature and location of the site meant that what should have been a straightforward bank stabilisation job became a tricky exercise in logistics," commented Mark Stephens, project manager at Kier. "Combine this with the fact that the canal is a popular route for members of the public, and the project
quickly took on a whole new level of difficulty.” The combination of time pressure and the awkward
location of the site necessitated the involvement of a marine and civil engineering specialist
and TRG was chosen to help assist with the bank stabilisation works. Within 24 hours of being contacted, TRG carried out a site visit and dispatched a 70ft crane boat to manage both the piling operations and the boats themselves. “We knew that we had to mobilise efficiently, if we were to keep disruption of the Llangollen Canal to a minimum," said Ian Rothen, TRG founder. "The project was completed efficiently and thoroughly with the canal completely reopening within a month.”

QUALITY MARINE & INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT
BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Journalist
CORONAVIRUS - A SURVIVAL GUIDE Coronavirus has proven how small our world is and at the same time, just how reliant we are on others for everything we need. From food, medication and cash to workers, transport and power, individuals and businesses in a modern society cannot operate in splendid isolation. And leisure marine has not been exempted from the fallout. As Boating Business has reported, boat builders have suspended production and many boat shows - regional and international - have been cancelled or postponed. The question on everyone's lips in the industry is, quite simply, how they can mitigate the impact of Coronavirus. One solution is to look at the contract. REMOVING RISK FROM CONTRACTS John Warchus, a partner at Moore Blatch LLP, has seen coronavirus increase concerns over the ability of parties to carry out agreed contracts. In particular, he says that “the coronavirus outbreak is an illustration of the legal principles of force majeure and frustration and how contracts can be suspended or ended because of an exceptional outside event.” Both are powerful concepts, but john says they operate quite differently. The first thing to note is that under English law force majeure only applies where
there is an express clause in a contract. “In essence,” he says, “a party relying on it will need to demonstrate that a force majeure event has occurred which is beyond its reasonable control; that the event has prevented, hindered or delayed the performance of the contract; and it has taken all reasonable steps to avoid or mitigate the force majeure event.” This means looking to the wording of the contract and understanding that where coronavirus is accepted as a qualifying force majeure event, contractual obligations will only be lifted for as long as the event remains in place. John knows from experience that “the courts will interpret any clause strictly and the
burden of proof will be on the party claiming force majeure to demonstrate that it has arisen and is the sole cause of delay or nonperformance.” He adds that “if force majeure is one of several reasons, it will not apply.” And this must be demonstrable. Further, and this should be obvious, force majeure must be notified according to the contract terms for it to apply. TERMINATED WITHOUT LIABILITY As to the legal effects of force majeure, John says that the wording is key, but generally liability is removed for as long as the event remains in place - “the effect is only temporary and the affected party will need to resume their obligations as
soon as the force majeure event has passed.” At the same time, John points out that a well-drafted force majeure clause will have a provision which allows the contract to be terminated without liability if the force majeure continues in place for a defined period: “Such a clause ensures that the party not affected is not tied into a very long contract where the other party cannot perform its obligations for a significant time.” But what if there is no force majeure clause? Here John says that then the only way an affected party can avoid legal liability is through the legal concept of frustration “which,” he says, “requires them to show that it is either physically or commercially impossible to
perform a contract due to an interrupting event.” The problem is that legal test for frustration is far stricter than that for force majeure as it requires a party to show that it is impossible to perform a contract or that the obligations have become radically different. The legal effects are, according to Warchus, dramatic as frustration can automatically terminate a contract for good. Case law here is muddied and the courts in recent years have, reckons John, said that obligations need to become “radically different” after the event for frustration to apply. Lastly, John explains that to determine if a contract has been frustrated a court will have to assess the terms of the contract; the factual background to the contract; the parties' knowledge and expectations about risk; and the parties' view as to the ability to perform the contract in circumstances which are now said to amount to frustration. TO FINISH It's true - there is much doom and gloom around, but sight shouldn't be lost of the fact that the sky hasn't fallen, and world hasn't ended, and society will surely get through the Coronavirus outbreak. But it's going to take - and this is an understatement - some managing and time. Keep calm and try to carry on.

four schemes: finance and business planning, leadership and talent, innovation and technology and exporting. All business support schemes will be accessible via the new Business Support website. The website also provides access to a Business
Support Helpline and a LiveChat function. Workers' right to paid holiday leave becomes focus of government campaign The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has launched a new campaign - Unpaid Britain - in an effort to
remind employees, as well as employers, of the right to paid holiday leave, and how it is to be reinforced in the workplace. Regardless of whether they work part-time, shifts or irregular hours, all workers are entitled to paid time off by law, calculated on an hourly basis.
An Unpaid Britain study has recently found that workers are entitled to £1.8bn per year of unpaid holiday leave that they are not making use of. Those most at risk of missing out are employees whose working patterns are atypical, part-time workers and those who do shift work.

Mastervolt has launched three new lithium ion battery models: the MLI Ultra 12/2750, 12/5500 and 24/5500. These large capacity heavy-duty batteries are designed for use in harsh conditions such as wet environments, extreme vibrations and mechanical shocks. They are fully equipped for repetitive cycles, like running airconditioning, pumps or electric motors for long periods of time and can recharge within 60 minutes. They are in part due to an increased demand for plug and play with system integration onboard boats having been a desire of customers for some time. "Our customers still want the same performance

benefits our batteries, chargers and inverter etc offer, but now with easier and smarter ways of connecting them into their boats and to the other thirdparty platforms that may be onboard as well," explained
Nick Holland, UK and Ireland sales manager, Mastervolt and Power Products. "Mastervolt is currently working to simplify the setup of their products and the specialist skill level required to do this."
8 Mastervolt's new MLI series
SYSTEM SIMPLICITY One example is that these new batteries have CZone ports built in as standard, making its easy to fully integrate the batteries in to an
electrical system through a choice of the CZone platform, as well as the MasterBus and NMEA 2000 protocols. The new MLI batteries are CE and E-Mark certified and are awaiting DNV GL approval. They have a lifespan of 3500 cycles at a depth of discharge of 80%, made possible by Mastervolt combining Lithium-Iron phosphate cells with its Battery Management System. The MLI series includes two integrated handles with a recess for the correct and practical installation of the cables. The battery poles are accessible and protected, so no extra isolation covers are needed. The batteries have a high charge/discharge rate up to 2.5°C and can be connected in series up to ten batteries.
NEW MPOWER SERIES FROM MARETRON Maretron has unveiled the MPower series comprising a new DC load module and bypass module. Replacing mechanical circuit breakers with digital power distribution, the new CLMD12 offers programmable multichannel DC electronic modules in a scalable configuration each capable of switching up to 5, 10 or 12 amps with a total current capacity of 75 amps. The CLMD12 connects directly to the NMEA 2000 network allowing breakers to be turned on and off from any NMEA 2000 device including the Maretron DSMSeries display or any device running Maretron N2KView.
20 | APRIL 2020
The module handles resistive DC loads like lights and inductive DC loads such as pumps and motors reporting the current through each of the 12 breakers allowing users to see if loads are drawing too much or too little current. When used in conjunction with the CLMD12 the CBMD12 bypass module provides manual control of the loads in the event of system failures. It uses standard fuses for overcurrent protection and 12 Carling Curvette rocker switches. The maximum current capacity for the CBMD12 is 75 amps in 12VDC and 24VDC power systems.
Energy Solutions has released a trio of new products for the marine market, an AC System Controller Changeover, an IsoBoost Combiner and an IsoBoost Transformer. LIFOS 105 BATTERY CHOSEN BY ROWING SOLUTIONS Rowing Solutions began using Lifos batteries last year, reducing the weight on board and saving space. The company, that manufactures rowing, coaching, umpiring and rescue catamarans, first incorporated the smaller Lifos 68 battery, reducing battery load by 190kg. “When evaluating the eight Lifos batteries compared with the equivalent lead acid batteries weighing more than 220kg, Rowing Solutions saw the benefits of speedier charging times and a longer battery life,” explained Jeremy Usher, sales director at distributor Solar Technology International.

Fischer Panda has launched a range of variable speed hybrid DC generators, the first to feature a new standardised FP Control system. The VS Series gensets, which regulate the generator speed in accordance with the required power, enable either silent electric cruising powered from the battery bank alone or hybrid cruising using the batteries and the generator as a range extender. In addition, the series is the first of Fischer Panda UK's range to feature the new control system which provides information on the generator, connected drive systems and batteries. “The FP Control is significant as it means Fischer Panda can now offer a central standardised platform across the range,” said Chris Fower, sales and marketing director, Fischer Panda UK.
8 Rowing Solutions is able to save weight and space by using the 105Ah Lifos battery
POTENTIAL Rowing Solutions latest boat designs now feature four 105Ah batteries in series, each weighing 11.9kg and
producing a total of 48V of power, providing the equivalent power of a 60kg 200Ah lead acid battery.

“As brand leaders in their sector, Rowing Solutions are always at the cutting edge,” added Jeremy. “They were quick to see the potential of Lifos and the experience so far with the 105 model is looking impressive. “With the benefit of the Battery Management Systems and Bluetooth app connectivity, keeping on top of the battery charge and discharge is easy.” The Lifos battery uses LiFePO4 lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry and has 2750 charge/ discharge cycles.
E-Plex has released a new distribution model designed to simply electronic systems wiring by providing more control over AC loads. The 832DMAC provides AC distribution and control for 110V and 220V single and split phase applications. Its new design allows for direct connection to readily available DIN rail style circuit breakers giving the OEM or the end user the ability to select the size and type of breaker they need or replace a breaker anywhere in the world. The module also has manual override capability and is designed to fit off-the-shelf contractor style boxes and is DIN rail mountable. BENEFITS Having AC loads under the control of a digital switching system gains more space for storage in the areas where the cumbersome AC panels are usually fitted. Crucially, when monitoring the AC incoming power the 832DMAC can pre-warn users if they are going to pull too much power from their available shore power when switching on more loads therefore reducing the likelihood of tripping the dock shore power breaker. Additionally E-Plex's flexible programming software allows for smart load shedding meaning the system can shed certain AC loads automatically when the user demands more power or suggest the starting of the generators to supply more power.

PROFILE
MATTHEW VINCENT DOLPHIN SAILS MD/CHIEF DESIGNER
The descriptor 'a safe pair of hands' fits Dolphin Sails MD/chief designer, Matthew Vincent, very well. In the mid 1960s, when aged ten, he cut Dolphin labels to put on the sails and for every label his father Brian deemed to be 'good', he was paid one (old) pence. Some 50 years' later, Matthew remains 'hands-on', running the family sailmaking business. Dolphin Sails was founded in 1964 by boat builders Brian Vincent and Pat Webb. “My father was obsessed with weight saving and together with my stepmother Frances, won the Cherub European Championships in 1970.” Matthew and younger sister, Toni, grew up some 500m from Dolphin's HQ in Harwich, and at age six, he joined Harwich Town Sailing Club. His first boat was a Mirror 4808 named 'slowcoach'. “This was a pretty accurate descriptor as at least three children were faster than me. At around 14, I fortuitously managed to win the Essex schools championship which ignited a passion for sailing and sail-making.” OLYMPIC TRIALS Alongside Mirrors, Matthew sailed Cherubs, Condor Cats and Tornados, culminating in Olympic trials where he came fifth. “I then sailed Sonatas, coming second in the nationals, and half tonners, winning our class in Cowes week and the East Anglian offshore.” After studying physics and astro-physics at the University of London, in 1977 Matthew joined Dolphin, working with his father, stepmother and two machinists, tea-brewing, floor sweeping, making patches and cutting simple sails. “In the early days of sail design, we rolled out fabric on the floor and shaped the
edges with bendy canes; if it was a windy day the sail would have less shape and if there were light winds, it would have more definition which was very bizarre. “We learned to design in 3D and acquired laser CAD cutting tables to cut sails and covers, ensuring greater accuracy, repeat ability and consistency.” ADDITIONAL SITES Dolphin developed a reputation for its dinghy and windsurfing sails, but soon its strong, long-lasting blue water sails came to the fore. “We've made sails and covers for Oyster Yachts for over 30 years manufacturing in the UK, exporting a high proportion of our products.” The business operates from three additional sites West Mersea, Hamble and Majorca - employing 35 people. “We set up a Majorca loft to support Oyster and the large yacht/super yacht brands and are proud to have supplied the largest yacht in the world.” As sail designs and fabrics continue to evolve, so too does Dolphin. “Membrane sail development is a focus, and several years ago we invested in 'form finding'
software which enables cleverly-shaped fabric to enhance the strength and stability of a structure - as was used in the O2 arena. “We're writing our own standalone package, which will effectively 'shrink wrap' a boat. It will find the contact points, automatically produce shaped-patterns for those areas and 'form find' the 'free' surfaces, producing unrivalled stability for covers/awnings. It's a real game-changer for cover and awning design.”
8 Dolphin Sails has made sails and covers for Oyster Yachts for more than 30 years
seeing his sails win races, including the Round Britain and Transat Jacques Vabre. If there was an industry low, Matthew says it 'must be
getting into the windsurf sail market too late and leaving too soon'. When assessing his industry, Matthew believes offshore manufacturing has driven down costs, resulting in less sail makers employing people with specialist skills. “Fewer young people are working in this sector which is very sad.” And while keen to preserve traditional skills, Matthew describes himself as a 'disruptor'. “It's good to question methodology, keep learning and be innovative. I love to develop new things and look at new ways of working - if you're passionate about what you do, you can help the market evolve.” Matthew lives in Essex with wife Kate and their six-yearold daughter. Older daughter Katie lives in Auckland, New Zealand (the land of sails). He plays golf, has a private pilot's license and is a trustee of his village event 'Wrabfest' - a 'normal fete mixed with a rock festival'.
GREAT THRILL Dolphin's tensile awnings attract attention from yacht builders and owners, private residences, restaurants and ships. “Many years ago, we produced a cover for the Planetarium at Madame Tussaud's for Red Nose day; my daughter Katie contributed to the project and was interviewed by Blue Peter which was a great thrill.” Matthew singles his father out as his most important mentor and cites career highs as; making his first sail, winning races personally and 8 Matthew in the 1980s hand sewing a corner ring in a sail
