Princess Yachts is looking to expand its production capacity following an unprecedented rise in demand for its boats. The luxury boatbuilder says numerous opportunities are being investigated to enable it to produce more vessels, employ more people and fulfil its US$1bn order book. One possibility being considered is an expansion of its South Yard site which sits within the tax-break Freeport Zone of Plymouth. So far, no plans have been drawn up, but the expansion

of the site would help give the boatbuilder the ability to reach the required production capacity to meet the rise in demand. The Freeport area – due to come into force in 2022 – will benefit from simpler planning procedures, infrastructure funding, and lower taxes. Princess Yachts is due to launch its new Princess X80 and V50 at boot Düsseldorf 2022.

DISTRIBUTOR ROUND-UP
General Motors enters electric marine market General Motors (GM) is entering the electric boat market with the acquisition of a 25% stake in Seattle-based Pure Watercraft. The collaboration between the two companies advances what they are calling a ‘shared vision to promote sustainability through an expansion of zero-emissions mobility for future generations’. “GM’s stake in Pure Watercraft represents another exciting opportunity to extend our zero-emissions goal beyond automotive applications,” said Dan Nicholson, GM vice president of global electrification, controls, software and electronics. “Building upon GM’s existing efforts to strategically deploy our technology across rail, truck and aerospace industries, the combined expertise of these two enterprises should result in future zero-emissions marine product offerings, providing consumers with more choice than before.” The collaboration will incorporate Pure Watercraft’s
marine propulsion technology and experience in the commercial marine industry with GM’s engineering, supply chain and manufacturing capabilities. The two companies plan to develop and commercialise battery powered watercraft, integrating GM technology into a variety of applications, helping to accelerate the industry’s move to electric mobility. Over the next few years, GM is investing $35 billion in electric and autonomous vehicle technology — including work to improve performance and reduce battery costs. “Our mission is to enable a new era in boating,” added Andy Rebele, founder and CEO of Pure Watercraft. “This joint effort with GM is expected to enable us to make significant technological advancements in range and charging, while achieving volume production.” Pure Watercraft was founded in 2011 and has developed the Pure Outboard System, a 25kW outboard motor.

Will exhibitors need reassurance to commit to shows?
VOLVO PENTA WINS 2021 DAME AWARD
After the imposition of a partial lock-down in Holland, and the effect this consequently had on METSTRADE, I was interested to hear that the UK’s newest boat show, BoatLife, has invested in a government-backed scheme which will guarantee exhibitor stand costs will be refunded in the event the show is cancelled for Covid reasons. The additional reassurance for exhibitors will no doubt encourage more companies to book and pay the deposits for their stands, safe in the knowledge that they won’t be severely out of pocket if the show doesn’t go ahead. And with the emergence of the new Omicron variant, this is clearly much needed forward thinking and a contrast with other exhibitions. Is this the future for show organisers? RESTRICTIONS One of the major topics of conversation this month was METSTRADE and whether the show should have gone ahead after the Dutch Government introduced Covid restrictions. For businesses that had invested a large chunk of their marketing budget on the show, it was a gamble as to whether to go and risk exhibiting to empty halls or not go and lose the money they had already spent on their stands, flights and accommodation. It was undoubtedly a risk, both for companies and their staff, visitors and the families of everyone involved and that was seen in the numbers of those who dropped out. For those who did travel to Amsterdam and consequently caught Covid, I wonder if they are still pleased that they did make the effort to go. We were told by the RAI that international trade fairs are safe, that masks would be worn and there wouldn’t be any stand parties. However, looking at the photos that were plastered across social media – I’ve never seen LinkedIn so busy with company announcements trying to encourage people to visit stands – very few people were wearing masks and drinks were still being drunk in the aisles. Having spoken to many of my contacts after the announcement was made it was clear that feelings were divided. The lack of general stand parties and evening entertainment was clearly off-putting for some. For others the chance to conduct business without a hangover was a bonus. Some went as far as to state on social media that those attending were being ‘reckless’ and not being fair to the Dutch people. While this was a controversial viewpoint, it struck favour with a lot of people who thought thousands of international visitors shouldn’t have flown in from countries across the world while the country was in a partial lock-down and Covid infections were high. It’s clear that business was carried out, but whether there will be enough return on investment particularly for the smaller companies to justify exhibiting next year remains to be seen.

Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking System has been chosen as the 2021 DAME Award winner. The system works with the company’s IPS propulsion drives to provide levels of fine manoeuvring control in motor yachts, with the ability to take wind and current into account. It is operated via a joystick controller and can be used by boaters of all abilities. Its Glass Cockpit System assists situational awareness, allowing the person at the helm to take their hand off the joystick while holding the boat in its precise position until the control is touched again. In reaching its decision, the DAME Jury recognised the Assisted Docking solution is the result of much research, development and extensive software and hardware design. The system is intuitive to use but the Jury noted Volvo Penta has paid attention to more than core function and innovation including the ergonomics and aesthetics of the hand controller. “Sustainable product lifecycle and making boating more accessible for novice users are critical
design priorities as we move through this decade,” said Jury chair, Andre Hoek. “It is appropriate therefore that the Jury selected the Volvo Penta Assisted Docking system as its DAME Award for 2021. This product is a brilliant example of how we can harness great design and evolving technology to safely remove barriers to entry.” Category winners and special mentions: 8 Marine electronics and marine related software: Garmin Surround View Camera System; Special mentions: Calypso Instruments Ultrasonic Portable Mini; ICOM ICM94DE; Pixel sur mer EXOCET Gold; Raymarine Cyclone 8 Interior equipment, furnishing, materials and electrical fittings used in cabins: Dometic Voyager TX Series; Special mention: Dometic M65 Gravity Toilet; Morbern MorGreen Evohide Mistral FRee 8 Marina equipment, boatyard equipment and boat construction tools and materials: No category winner this year. 8 Deck equipment, sails and rigging: Bonomi JOY Self-Tailing Cleat; Special

NEWS Scandinavian companies Hynion AS and Hyrex AS are to cooperate to develop hydrogen filling stations for recreational boats. The agreement initially covers Hynion offering refuelling of boats on car trailers at the company’s hydrogen station in Porsgrunn, Norway, from autumn 2021. In the next phase, the companies will work together to establish hydrogen filling stations for leisure boats in Norwegian ports from 2022. “As Hynion now builds a network of hydrogen filling stations in Norway and Sweden, we see exciting opportunities in ports as well,” said Ulf Hafseld, Hynion CEO. “Although other forms of transport account for more emissions than recreational boats, this is also a significant segment, and the Norwegian authorities have stated clearly that emissions from recreational boats should be halved. “It’s very hard to see how this could happen without the use of hydrogen, and the exciting HyCruiser project illustrates what is already possible.” METSTRADE 2021 saw almost 12,000 industry professionals visit RAI Amsterdam including 14,065 visits from 8,459 unique visitors spanning 63 nationalities, and 3,477 exhibitor personnel. Exhibitor numbers were down to 1,105 from 44 countries, 13% down on the originally expected exhibitor total following businesses withdrawing due to Covid concerns. HYDROGEN NETWORK TO BE DEVELOPED
Hydrex has developed a hydrogen powered prototype vessel - the HyCruiser 28, a day cruiser which has a hydrogenelectric powertrain. Production The craft is currently being test, with a planned production start in 2022. The boat’s powertrain is a rechargeable hybrid with an electric motor and a 20kWh battery. When fully charged
it will allow between one to three hours of operation depending on speed. After this, a fuel cell is activated, using hydrogen from the boat’s tanks to charge the batteries with hydrogen acting as a range extender. HyCruiser 28 will be able to reach speeds of 18-20 knots and will have a range of 200-250 nautical miles running at a speed of 10-12 knots.
8 The HyCruiser is a hybrid powered day cruiser
“With HyCruiser, we demonstrate that hydrogen can play a major role in making electric boats a more fully functional alternative than they would be with just batteries,” said Henrik Torgersen, Hyrex CEO. “To realise this potential, we need easily available filling options in ports. That’s why this collaboration is so important.”

HOLYHEAD MARINA WINS COURT CASE
BRIEFS Agreement

The Court of Appeal has upheld the view that marinas are docks and entitled to limit their liabilities under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. In a court case, an appeal bought by owners of boats damaged when Storm Emma hit Holyhead Marina, Anglesey in 2018 has been dismissed. Around 89 craft that were moored in the marina were damaged in the March storm. In the court case, the marina sought to limit its liabilities, claiming a marina is a dock and therefore entitled to limit its liability under section 191 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, a view the court agreed with. The appeal judges have upheld the original judgement that a marina is in fact a dock. The latest judgement means the marina is entitled to limit its liability to around £550,000. If the case had gone against the marina, its liability could
reach as much as £5m. In the case, representatives for the marina argued that the pontoons which make up the marina are within the statutory definition of a dock, being landing places, jetties or stages within the Act. The owners however claimed the type of structure used in the marina
was different to that listed in the Act and argued that the primary purpose of a marina is for berthing rather than the landing of passengers or goods and for leisure rather than commerce. The owners claimed the judge was wrong to take into account the fact that pleasure craft as well as commercial ships were

Yacht brokerage and management company Yachting Partners International (YPI) has signed an agreement with Norwegian based boatbuilder Green Yard Kleven. Postponements America’s National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) has postponed five of its shows from 2022 to 2023, while adding new events in Georgia and Washington. NMMA says the decision has been taken as a result of analysis carried out as to the needs and economics of each season with regards to date availability, supply chain disruptions and historically low marketspecific boat inventory. The shows involved are the Progressive Insurance Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Nashville and St Louis. NMMA will also launch a Discover Boating showcase in Washington, DC in May to run in tandem with the 2022 American Boating Congress (ABC). The event is intended as a forerunner to a consumer-facing boating event in the spring of 2023 alongside ABC. In addition, NMMA and the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas (MRAA) will begin to incorporate Discover Boating across NMMA’s boat shows this winter.

Retail demand for boats, both new and used, across North America is strong, but supply issues are causing problems, according to a recent survey. The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas surveyed 116 new and used boat dealers to assess trends in North America during the month of October. The demand for boats is strong, indicated the dealers, but supply is a problem. “Boats are selling,” said one response, “however, difficult to get settled and delivered. Portsmouth City Council is proposing the development to address two key needs in the city - to meet demand for employment in the maritime manufacturing sector and also future government housing targets. Proposals have been put forward to allow for a significant mix of development at Tipner West, including one million square feet of marine employment and around 3,500 homes. Through the 2013 City Deal, the Council secured 31.5 hectares of land at the location, but to accommodate the marine employment hub, housing and local amenities, a total land mass of 59 hectares is required. Therefore, the project seeks to reclaim 27.5 hectares of land from Portsmouth Harbour as part of the development proposal. NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE ALL-ELECTRIC HYDROFOIL Lyman-Morse shipyard is teaming up with technology start-up, Navier, to build a new 27ft all-electric hydrofoil. Navier 27 is a foiling performance vessel capable of a range exceeding 75 nautical miles solely under electric propulsion and will be reportedly the longestrange electric boat in the world when it launches next year. Navier is producing the limited number of boats under its Pioneer Program and chose Lyman-Morse thanks to the Maine-based shipyard’s experience with carbon composite boats. “Very few shipyards have the extensive experience, in-house capabilities, and deep interest in high-tech projects as Lyman-Morse,” said Navier co-founder and chief executive Sampriti Bhattacharyya.

The Protocol of the 37th America’s Cup has been released with a focus on cost reduction and promoting new cleaner technologies. Teams will now have to build and operate two hydrogen powered foiling chase boats for their campaign. It is hoped that by showcasing hydrogen propulsion, the wider marine sector will be encouraged to adopt greener technologies. Other stipulations of the new protocol include limiting teams to building only one new AC75, a reduction in crew numbers and, for the first time, a women only race, something welcomed by INEOS Britannia chief executive and team principal, Sir Ben Ainslie. “As challenger of RECORD, INEOS Britannia has sought with the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, to make the next America’s Cup less expensive and more
“Plus, Maine has a long history in boat building, which makes it a special place to build Navier 27,” she added. Navier is a Silicon Valley startup focused on technology to increase the efficiency of small powerboats by 90% whilst ensuring zero emissions. The design of the new Navier 27 will be led by America’s Cup engineer and foiling expert, Paul Bieker, whilst Lyman-Morse will tie the technology, mechanics, construction and manufacturing together. “What has me - and all of us at Lyman-Morse - excited about the partnership with Navier is that we are developing something that is cutting edge and certain to be the future of yachting in this type of market,” said president and owner of Lyman-Morse, Drew Lyman.

A group of shipyards has committed to reinvesting in the regeneration and conservation of the oceans and is urging others to join them. Abeking & Rasmussen, Ameryachts, Baglietto, Feadship, Gulf Craft, Heesen Yachts, Horizon Yachts, Lürssen Yachts, Oceanco, Royal Huisman, Sanlorenzo, Silveryachts, Southern Wind, Tankoa, Turquoise Yachts and Vitters are the first builders so far to agree to reinvest based on the gross tonnage (GT) of yachts they deliver. For each tonnage delivered in 2021, the yacht builders will contribute €1 to the Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA) project which is identifying those areas most important to marine mammals so as to prioritise them for protection. With 159 IMMAs already established across the Southern Hemisphere, scientists are now looking to the Northern Hemisphere. There are nine regions of the ocean still to be mapped with the North Atlantic next on the list – the most common crossing route for yachts and superyachts between the Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons. The North Atlantic project will cost €555,000. So far, the yacht builders have contributed €60,000 and are urging other companies to join them.

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Financial Journalist
Trust and reputation are everything and employers are entitled to protect their organisation. But the question needs to be asked, where do employees stand in the debate? What is expected of them and how should they act both in an out of work? Consider the US Capitol riot last January which President Trump incited. Employees were identified and, in some cases, sacked1. And think of the highranking games company employee who was forced to resign after a Facebook post that seemed to justify the death of George Floyd2. Social media had a hand to play in these situations. Context is everything According to Tina Chander, partner and head of the Employment Law Team at Wright Hassall, it’s important to recognise that every case of employee-related reputational damage is different and further, “context is everything when considering whether an employee has caused their employer reputational damage.” She offers an example: “For anyone involved with children or vulnerable people any misconduct of a sexual nature, even if committed legally in private, that finds its way into the public domain, is likely to be reputationally damaging. Likewise, if an employee behaves inappropriately during working hours and is clearly identifiable as a company employee, their employer might justly accuse them of bringing the company into disrepute.” But for Amanda Trewhella, managing associate at Freeths LLP, reputational damage caused by an employee depends upon how well known the employee is, whether the public 10 | DECEMBER 2022
BROKEN REPUTATIONS 8 Tina Chandler, partner and head of the Employment Law team
associate them with their employer, as well as the seriousness of their actions. She says “it is particularly likely that for those with a high profile in the public eye that poor conduct could cause reputational damage to their employer. And then there’s the risk that an employee can cause reputational damage, either inadvertently or deliberately, through social media. On this Tina tells how “there have been several highprofile cases of employees expressing views, or sharing the views of others, that are directly contradictory to the principles endorsed by their employer.” Either way, Tina says that there must be proportionality – employers don’t always win cases. Inside or outside? The fact that employees occasionally get into trouble is a given. But are the risks the same if the matter occurs inside or outside of work or working hours? For Amanda, it is unlikely to matter where the conduct happened. She says that “the most relevant factors are likely to be the seriousness of the conduct, whether the
conduct relates in some way to the employee’s role or the organisation generally, and whether the employee is publicly linked to the organisation.” A similar stance is taken by Tina who reckons “that each case has to be considered on its own merits.” The problem, she says, is that “the blurring of private and public life is becoming increasingly common as people share information via social media, assuming that they are doing so privately.” Tina suggests that posting derogatory comments on social media about an employer “could, in theory, lead to a charge of reputational damage if the company’s identity is obvious… However, not only have employers to be very clear about why they consider the comments damaging, they must also check that their social media policy reflects the standard of online behaviour they expect of their employees.” In essence, a disciplinary and grievance policy should list examples of unacceptable conduct, including those that could
bring the company into disrepute. It should also tie into a social media policy. “That way,” Tina says, “no employee could plead ignorance.” Amanda doesn’t disagree. She says that provided policies are reasonable and have been communicated, an employee risks disciplinary action if they then breach it. She adds: “It is particularly important to ensure that all policies are properly communicated to staff.” As for a social media policy, she says that it should cover use of social media both in and outside the workplace. “It cannot be prescriptive about an employee’s private use, but it can set out the standards which employees are expected to follow.” Notably, contracts of employment may include a clause that allows an employee’s employment to be terminated if they breach the code of conduct laid out in the social media policy. Investigating an allegation If an allegation is made an investigation is necessary before any disciplinary hearing is held. But for
a dismissal to be fair, if appropriate, the investigation must be thorough and carried out following the proper procedures. As Tina warns, this “applies even if the misconduct appears to be an open and shut case and the employee has admitted that they are guilty of misconduct.” Experience has taught Amanda that an investigator should try to keep an open mind and look at all the circumstances surrounding the incident before deciding whether disciplinary action is warranted. No one should be assumed to be guilty. However, it also needs to be said that in some circumstances, an arrest elsewhere can lead to dismissal. The risks of getting it wrong If the dismissal isn’t handled properly, an employee could claim unfair dismissal and breach of contract. The maximum, basic award for unfair dismissal for an individual with at least two year’s service, from 6 April 2021, is £16,320, but an employer could face having to pay compensation up to a maximum of £89,493, or 52-weeks gross salary, whichever is the lower.” In summary Employees and employers need to live with the consequences of their actions. While it’s impossible to legislate for all situations, policies offer the best protection to all. https://www.marketwatch. com/story/high-rankingexecutives-amongemployees-being-fired-afterparticipating-in-riot-inside-u-scapitol-11610118106 2 https://dotesports.com/ business/news/high-rankingriot-employee-ron-johnsonfired-over-racist-facebook-postabout-george-floyd 1

New cleat aids crews Fender Cleats is a start-up company headed by David Royston producing fender cleats designed to make boating easier. The product replaces the traditional clove hitch or stokers dobie hitch for securing fenders on recreational boats. “In order to safely secure fenders it is necessary to double knot,” explained David. “The hard synthetic rope generally used nowadays makes fender line handling a harder and more difficult task than it need be for crews who really want to enjoy the leisure experience from setting off to putting down the fenders at the end of the day.” He added: “This is our first foray into putting our ideas and experience out to the world at large and to dip our toe into the water secure in the knowledge that the world will not beat a path to our door because we have produced the world’s best mousetrap but we have noticed that leisure boaters are no longer prepared to accept a rough life ‘before the mast’ fighting with hard, wet inflexible synthetic ropes.” The Fender Cleat is made from naturally finished stainless steel in order to avoid any chemical processes required to polish the metal. They are packaged two per pack in recycled card to maintain their environmentally friendly footprint. They are available in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm sizes and are manufactured in Germany. Fender Cleats has worked with Paul Ainsworth and his team at Farndon Marina to bring the product to market. 12 | DECEMBER 2021

NEW BLIND IS UNIQUE TO MARINE MARKET Next gen SCR system There’s a new marine engine emissions reduction solution on the market. Netherlands-based company, XEAMOS has released the modular airless Zero NOx IMO Tier III Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. The SCR system is used in diesel engines to transform exhaust gases such as nitrogen oxide into non-toxic nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide, natural components found in the atmosphere. “For island vessels, yachts, coasters and so on, electrification and the transfer to hydrogen will not be feasible for a long time to come,” said Alwin de Kock, managing director, XEAMOS. “After all, we have a very large existing fleet which you can’t just convert overnight and there is the price of this to consider.” Ideal solution Mr de Kock said that this technology is needed now to bridge the gap between the reliance on diesel and the conversion of all vessels to electric and hydrogen propulsion, which he said is potentially thirty or even forty years away. Developed for seagoing vessels through a collaboration with various engine brands, the new OEM system is suitable for a broad range of engine types up to approximately 800 kW. The system offers a guaranteed SCR catalytic lifetime of 10,000 hours (with an expected lifetime of 20,000 hours). XEAMOS has already secured orders for the systems. This includes an order for a rescue vessel for a Danish rescue company going into use in January 2022. 14 | DECEMBER 2021

NEW DIGITAL SEXTANT PROVIDES SAFE GPS BACKUP HEBEX International has unveiled a new digital sextant, said to be the first electronic sextant in the world. The new sextant automatically calculates the ship’s position by measuring the altitude of 67 observable celestial bodies, providing an effective and reliable back-up to satellite navigation. “Currently, there is no proper position fixing method in the ocean in case of emergencies, GPS malfunction, jamming and failure,” said John Jeon, chief executive of HEBEX. With a traditional sextant, the skipper or navigator has to take a number of manual readings such as time, air temperature and pressure before making adjustments and comparisons to give the ship’s position. “Navigation officers
are reluctant to use the traditional celestial observation method because of its complicated calculation and chart drawing procedures,” said John Jeon. The digital sextant is a
‘one-stop shop’, calculating these components automatically and removing the possibility of human error. Within one second of sighting, the temperature, air pressure, height and ship heading are

Designed to secure an anchorage, the new collection of chain grips comes in three models suitable for mooring from 8 to 12mm. Made from corrosion-resistant Duplex stainless steel grade, the design has changed considerably since the earlier models appeared and now comes in a new single-block with L-shaped stud to prevent the chain coming loose. The new four-model range of soft snatch blocks is suitable for flying sail furling, furler terminals, rigging deviation and barber-haulers. Made from anodised aluminium, they feature Dyneema loops and Velcro strips for easy installation and use. Wichard has added a new fixed rounded pad-eye to its range of diamondshaped pad-eyes. Made from Duplex stainless steel, it is suitable for reefing blocks, fastening points on bowsprits and on blocks. The company has also unveiled a new stainlesssteel deck fairlead. Made from Duplex stainless steel and designed to deviate various types of rigging (furling lines), this fairlead can be mounted with just two screws. Finally, Wichard has added a new fixed-blade knife to its Offshore Rescue range, primarily designed for non-nautical applications, such as military or tactical, and for collectors. DECEMBER 2021 | 17

8 It’s been a bumper year for marine BBQs
Record 2021 for Sea Sure Sea Sure has had its best year on record with sales 20% above its previous best. ”This was largely down to each product range and brand firing at the same time. This year all parts of the business have been strong,” said Dan Henderson, sales and marketing director, Sea Sure. Key products have included the Magma Marine BBQ’s, which Sea Sure is the sole UK distributor for, perhaps unsurprisingly as most boat owners have stayed closer to home. Worthy mentions Sea Sure has been optimising its OMEGA seating inserts for different sectors this year, including Rolls-Royce and off-road rally cars. OMEGA was also fitted to a 1936 Aston Martin for the 1000km Nuvolari Rally across Italy and reported good results in shock reduction and comfort. Dan acknowledges that for anyone who manufactures product it has been a tricky year because of supply problems and rising costs. But he’s optimistic going forward. ”I think part of the success of 2021 for us is that we have been thinking a long way ahead and making sure that we don’t let customers down,” he said. “This has led to a big increase in new customers.” 20 | DECEMBER 2022
SMG has enjoyed an exceptional year with record sales at the highest level ever in the company’s 50 year history. Despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdown restrictions and their consequent boon in outdoors leisure led to double digit growth for big brands such as Garmin, Raymarine and Icom, with companies focusing on entry level watersports doing particularly well. “Railblaza, who produce trailers for canoes and kayaks, and accessory mounts, such as fishing rod holders for small boats, more than doubled in 2021 what were record sales in 2020!” said managing director of SMG, Ray Badminton. The company also took the brave step of opening a new waterside Portsmouth office which is proving an asset to both customers and suppliers and has already hosted a number of dealer training sessions and a ‘Meet the Manufacturers’ event. This past year has seen SMG increase investment in on-the-water training on board its Ambassador boats. These popular sessions

give customers the chance to see marine technology in action rather than trying to understand it through onshore demonstrations. Future plans Plans for 2022 include running another ‘Meet the Manufacturers’ event in March, launching a new Furuno-equipped Ambassador boat and increasing online training for
dealers who cannot meet face-to-face. Following a successful visit to METSTRADE where distribution deals were struck, SMG also plans to unveil a range of new products. Supply chain issues are continuing to affect the marine industry and the company is already seeing back ordering of stock for June 2022 or even later for some products.
8 SMG has struck new distribution deals for 2022
“That’s one of the reasons why we remain independent and try to offer a onestop shop across multiple brands,” said Ray Badminton. “If supply constraints mean the first choice product is unavailable we will normally be able to recommend and supply an alternative,” he added.
STRONG START TO 2021 FOR BARRUS 8 Guidi is one of the brands taken on by E. P. Barrus during 2021
2021 started strongly for the Barrus Marine Equipment brand with the introduction of the Guidi brand. The Italian manufacturer of bronze, brass, chrome and nickel-plated marine accessories appointed E. P. Barrus as exclusive UK distributor. In addition, WhisperPower,
has appointed E. P. Barrus as exclusive national distributor in the UK and Barrus has also signed a renewed partnership with Navico whereby Barrus is the preferred wholesaler for the marine electronics brand Simrad. The introduction of the WhisperPower range expands the electrical systems portfolio, enabling boat builders, dealers and retailers to offer innovative, non-polluting, sustainable energy systems for all types of vessels.
This year, Barrus has also expanded its engineering and production facilities with the introduction of a new boat rigging and UTV assembly centre at its head office in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Engines and equipment The new facilities enable Barrus to offer its authorised marine dealers a rigging service for Zodiac and Bombard boats installing and configuring Mariner and Mercury outboard engines and equipment. Barrus has also taken on additional admin support staff and a senior marketing executive to support the marketing activities of the distributor. “It has been another
challenging year, but we are extremely pleased with the progress that we’ve made and partnerships that have been secured, which will take our marine offering to another level,” said Ben Allen, general manager for the Marine Leisure Division. “We continue to strive to offer a premium range of products to service the needs of the marine industry and back this up with outstanding service support. “Barrus has seen an exceptional year for sales, thanks to our incredibly dedicated team.” But he warned: “The supply chain remains difficult and will continue to be challenging into next year.”

DISTRIBUTOR ROUND-UP CA Clase has found the demand for staying connected has skyrocketed over the past 12 months. More people have taken to the water and the spectrum of the distributor’s customer base has thus become very diverse. During the year, KVH launched the new V30, a DC powered 37cm VSAT system, which has made satellite communications more affordable. Recently CA Clase was appointed maritime distributor for Poynting antennas. This, accompanied by the Peplink 4G and 5G routers, has made for a busy year for MD Jason Macintosh and his team. “The combination of these two very reliable products mean you can get consistent 4G services from further offshore than ever before,” he explained. Lars Thrane has also launched its LT3100S Iridium GMDSS system which proved popular at After strengthening its range of advanced electric drive systems this year, Fischer Panda UK is to continue the expansion of its green power solutions in 2022. The company’s electric pod motor has opened up more possibilities for owners to adopt emissionfree propulsion with the technology now available to power a range of vessels and special projects. “The interest and enquiries about hybrid electric solutions continue to increase, so we view this sector as a key focus for our business in the coming years,” said Chris Fower, sales and marketing director, Fischer Panda UK. “It is clear that hybridisation to power sailing yachts, narrow boats, motorboats and other vessels offers a range of benefits, including reduced emissions, increased efficiency, quiet cruising and a compact footprint using

Southampton Boat Show. “Many visitors sought us out to see this new technology as it is the first competitor to Inmarsat’s GMDSS service,” added Jason. Challenges Leaving the EU has meant continued challenges with imports and exports both taking considerably
longer than before. Component shortages have compounded the issues with shipments that previously took two months to fulfil are now taking more than six months. Anticipating these factors, CA Clase has increased its stock holding by 50% while also introducing better forecasting with its partners. “Despite the challenges
we have faced, we continue to grow and having stock on the shelf has been paramount to that growth,” concluded Jason. “Our investment has paid off, together with long term currency contracts, and this has meant we have been able to absorb some of the price increases we have experienced from our suppliers.”

our integrated variable speed generators. “Fischer Panda is continuing to develop the most advanced technology and we are demonstrating our capabilities with an increasing number of cutting-edge installations, so I am confident that 2022 will be our busiest year yet in answering demand for hybrid propulsion.” Fisher Panda UK supplies electric systems, which can be charged by wind and solar energy with Fischer Panda UK’s diesel generators installed as back-up.
With adjustments for different applications, Fischer Panda UK’s electric drive systems and generators onboard can be supplemented by an inverter and charger, supported by a battery management system for control and monitoring. In 2021, Fischer Panda UK also expanded its watermaker range with the introduction of the Parker Hannifin H20 ECO Series of reverse osmosis water desalination systems. The company recently

VETUS UK restructures office in 2021 Following a restructure this year, VETUS UK says its office is well positioned to meet the record order book volumes seen across the company’s global network since March 2021. The restructure included the appointment of Ray Browning as UK branch manager, with a focus on serving VETUS customers in the country and reaching new customers. The strategy is aligned to VETUS’s direct model approach to strengthen its presence in a wide range of boating markets across the world. New key products that have been introduced this year include the company’s highest output thrusters yet. The new BOWB285, BOWB300 and BOWB320 thrusters are the first units in the 300mm tunnel range and are suitable for boats up to 30m. The latest models use DC-to-DC charging technology, have quiet operation, precision proportional control and a long run time. Earlier in the year, VETUS announced NMEA 2000 certification for its new CANverter gateway device, offering connectivity and communication capabilities for boat owners using its proportional bow and stern thrusters. The company has also seen strong interest in its new E-POD and E-LINE complete electric propulsion systems during 2021, after returning to the electric market. The E-POD and E-LINE are designed to offer boaters and OEMs reliable solutions for refits or new builds. The systems incorporate ‘active motor braking’, for optimum control of a boat, with no delay, direct movement and total control. DECEMBER 2022 | 21

MARKETING CHRIS JONES is founder of the Knot Agency The winter months have arrived and although it would be easy to sit back and wait for the 2022 season to kick off, there is no time like the present to show off your brand, connect with existing and win new customers. Here are a few ideas to market your busines in quieter months. 8 Competitions: Catch attention and give boaters a reason to think about your product/service. Be genuine, offer a decent prize and use the opportunity to build your customer database. 8 Educate your customers: Sailors are always interested in developing skills and knowledge. Share your expertise and they will likely come back to you for further advice. 8 Market Research: Do you know what your customers are thinking? Are their plans different for 2022 than they were in 2021? Ask them and see. 8 Social Media Content Creation: When you are flat out and run off your feet, there is not always time to create good content, so use the quieter months to get ahead and have interesting content ready to go. 8 Articles for spring magazines: Yachting magazines schedule articles several months in advance of publication, so if you have new products or services launching in the spring, make sure you share them now. 8 Phone or write a letter: When was the last time you picked up the phone or wrote a letter to contacts in your database? DISTRIBUTOR ROUND-UP Marine Components International has seen business rise more than 30% over the last year and continuing to grow. The rise in turnover includes an increase of 25% in OEM sales which, explained MCI MD Andy Scott, could have been better still if it wasn’t for supply chain issues. “We have mitigated a large part of this with earlier ordering and higher stock levels, but supply chain issues are continuing and will continue into 2022,” he said. Despite Brexit issues, MCI has seen a rise in export distribution of 27%, a consequence of resolving any paperwork conundrums early. This figure is helped by a rise in export OEM business of 85%, mainly due to a high demand for boats, and recovery from the shutdown of many boat builders. Like many businesses, MCI has had to reduce margins – in some cases by as much as 10% - due to the increased costs of exporting. Sales and pre-orders are up with new products and suppliers for Marathon during 2021. It’s been a bumper year for Marathon Leisure with sales up 25% on the 2020 season and pre-orders for 2022 showing no sign of slowing at 15%. Marathon has also signed agreements with several new suppliers including a new multi-year ASG distribution contract for its collaborative Southampton International Boat Show stand. Brands in the ASG range include Mastervolt, Whale, Attwood, Blue Sea Systems and Lenco. There is also a new supply deal with GOIOT, a leading French hatch, door and porthole manufacturer and Osculati, which supplies more than 600 of its own brand items, everything from aluminium foils, hatches, glazing and doors to deck and cabin fittings.
TURNOVER UP BUT MARGINS REDUCED FOR MCI IN 2021 8 TEMO’s electric outboard has been a star product for MCI in 2021
Another obstacle has been the necessity of negating the fact that overseas customers must now pay duty on goods received from MCI, despite the distributor having
already paid duty when the goods were imported to the UK. However, Andy is predicting that while travel will be easier for everyone in 2022 than it has been
over the last two years, the increase in interest in boating seen during the Covid pandemic will continue. “I think that the increase in boat purchases and upgrading existing boats
will grow significantly,” said Andy. “I think that we will still see some Covid-19 outbreaks globally and therefore people in each country will continue to spend more of their leisure time at home and will therefore invest in a boat or upgrade their existing boat.” When it comes to products, MCI took on distributor rights for the TEMO electric outboard during 2021 with the product proving to be a major highlight and contributing towards a forecasted growth of around 35% in 2022. In addition, Bennett Marine’s trim tabs have shown good growth, partly due to MCI taking on a new dealer, but also due to more people upgrading their boat equipment.
BUMPER YEAR FOR MARATHON
8 The Spinlock NEMO kids’ lifejacket
Marathon has also secured a new supply deal with Fabsil, which supplies premium waterproofing products for canopies and soft tops. New products added to the distributor’s portfolio during 2021 include
Spinlock’s NEMO kids’ lifejacket. The lifejacket is available in two-sizes for babies and toddlers and is simple to adjust so parents can fit it simply and quickly. Further design detail includes a back attached harness and plenty of easy-to-grab handles when needed in a rush, without snagging. Another new product is Attwood’s Sahara Mk2, marketed as the only automatic bilge pump that eliminates air locks. Design features include a patented X-Air Impeller that forces air bubbles trapped in the hose and underside of the pump out of the pipework, preventing burn out in either freshwater or saltwater. Despite all the positives, Marathon has suffered supply constraints and high shipping costs that have led

8 Attwood’s Sahara Mk2, the automatic bilge pump that eliminates air locks
to price increases above 4.2% inflation rate, a similar story for many. To minimise price increases, the company has spent the year resourcing products, renegotiating and reducing margins where it can. It’s predicted logistics and supply will remain an issue for 2022. Just in time supply is unviable due to volatility of the market supply ability,
so Marathon has increased its stock value by £500,000 compared with last year, but it’s still struggling to satisfy demand at times. In November, Marathon Leisure was bought by Alliance Marine which will allow it to draw from the group’s strength if required. The company remains autonomous with Tim Millinder staying on as MD and the rest of the team unchanged. DECEMBER 2022 | 23

SEVERAL NEW SIGNINGS FOR IMP IN 2021
LESLEY ROBINSON British Marine CEO I write after landing back from a busy three days at METSTRADE 2021. It felt great for the British Marine team to be in the heart of a vibrant British Pavilion once again. We supported 60 member companies across the halls of RAI Amsterdam. Many reported excellent results from a highly focused audience, justifying the efforts of all who safely negotiated late changes to pandemic restrictions. British Marine members once again achieved significant accolades in METSTRADE’s iconic competitions. Our congratulations to Volvo Penta for taking the overall DAME Award, to Garmin for its category win and to Rooster Sailing and Scanstrut for their nominations. The Boat Builder Awards, co-organised by British Marine member IBI, saw Sunseeker International and Princess Yachts honoured for innovation and marketing respectively. Virtual connections kept our businesses alive through COVID-19. However, this year’s resurgent Southampton International Boat Show and METSTRADE re-emphasised the power of physical events for creating new sales opportunities and networks. We’re now taking expressions of interest for the METSTRADE 2022 British Pavilion and Boot 2022 in Düsseldorf and will shortly announce key speakers for our new National Conference in March. Please contact sales@britishmarine.co.uk to get involved with these key face-to-face events. 24 | DECEMBER 2022
2021 has proved to be a busy year for International Marine Products (IMP) with agreements signed with several new brands. These include Seaview Blinds, a new blind manufacturer founded by Ed and Andy Fitzgerald, formerly of Oceanair blinds. Blinds available include hatch blinds, Venetians, pleated, roof blinds, cassette roller blinds and Roman blinds; all available in manual or powered variants. The ranges comprise bespoke and off-the-shelf shading products suitable for all window types. Shadow-Caster Shadow-Caster LED lighting was founded in 2007 by friends Brian Rogers and Jeff Pound. The brand, which concentrates on underwater LED lights and control systems is another new line for IMP. Over the years ShadowCaster has continued to develop its lights and Marineware is seeing the immediate importance behind sustainability as necessary and unescapable future for the marine industry. Marineware is now the UK distributor for Bcomp in the marine sector, distributing the natural flax fibres Amplitex and PowerRibs. These fibres have been designed to offer not just environmental benefits and viable end-of-life options, but also design opportunities and vibration damping. The flax is CO2 neutral over its life cycle, and the fibres are biologically decomposable. Marineware has also introduced the new Gurit Ampreg 3X Hardener range, one hardener for all five trade resins, including the Prime 37. Gurit’s technical team has transformed the company’s Prime 37 Infusion Resin to
controls and has also created its own CAN bus lighting control standard – the Shadow-NET. Products include its NMEA2000 lighting controller and supporting hardware. The low-profile surface mounted lights are engineered and manufactured in Florida. VeeConnect VeeConnect is a 12 channel DC switching module
with a remote touch screen console to provide streamlined control. The switching module enables control to be taken of onboard switches through one screen, integrating all the onboard electronics. Each of the VeeConnect’s 12 modules are configurable, including options such as fuse rating, analogue or digital inputs, switch type (slider, on/off, burst) as well as having a

Gurit’s fibre wetting technology reduces infusion time and improves laminate quality. The Gurit Kerdyn Green PET Core now has a factory based in Italy which recycles PET plastic – including dust and off-cuts - into the raw material Kerdyn Green is made from. “These materials and processes are a game changer in working towards more sustainable solutions,” explained Marineware’s Keeley Dickinson. Another highlight of 2021 for Marineware was the award of Technical Support of the Year from Sunseeker International. “We would like to take this moment to thank our customers for their continued support through this current climate,” added Keeley.

NIXON MARINE GLOBAL EXPANDS PORTFOLIO IN 2021 Nixon Marine Global has added more lines, brands and personnel during 2021, as it continues to expand its portfolio. In January Tom Bowker from Fernlea International was appointed UK sales representative. Based in Exeter, Tom has previously worked at Crewsaver and Scanstrut and has increased the distributor’s visibility in chandleries. Earlier in the year, Nixon Marine was appointed as exclusive UK distributor for Grunt! Boat Cleaner, Super Stainless and Boat Buddy range from Yellow Dolphin. The cleaners are designed to provide an effortless clean - with a brush on, leave and rinse method, they
are proving ever popular with both consumers and professional users. LIST is another UK brand that was added in 2021 with its range of tank and bilge level monitoring products. Accuracy The tank monitors can indicate tank levels from outside the tank, while the bilge monitoring allows for a high level of accuracy when measuring levels in the bilge. These two brands were bolstered by additional lines in the TRAC range with bilge pumps, circuit breakers and fluid extractors added this year. In order to manage the increases, Nixon Marine has
moved its warehouse to a larger facility with improved access. “Our location in Northern Ireland allows us to avail of unfettered access to both European and UK markets, meaning no additional tariffs for goods travelling either way, while our shipping costs are comparable to standard UK mainland rates,” explained Keith Nixon. “This unique position increases our ability to attract more imported product lines from Europe and United States.” He added: “We’re looking forward to continuing our growth in 2022, based on the solid foundations we have laid down in the last couple of years.”

NEW MOBILE PUMP OUT SOLUTION FROM LEESAN
A key partnership for LeeSan during 2021 has been that formed with Peter Leonard Marine. The partnership aims to solve the problem often faced by harbours and marinas by providing mobile pump out facilities without the need for investment in a permanent station. Marine sanitation company LeeSan has
developed a new mobile unit, the LSM Caddy. Mounted on a powder coated steel pallet, it features a peristaltic pump, a 500-litre storage tank, hoses and connections. Newhaven based Peter Leonard Marine has mounted it in an outboardpowered Smartliner GRP boat, providing an ideal visiting pump out solution.
Additionally, the vessel can act as a yard boat, water taxi or even a base for a mobile mechanic. The unit is fitted with a filter lance to pump out bilges and take into account the need to separate the oil from the blackwater. The LSM Caddy can also be mounted on a towable trolley, a pickup truck or other moving platform and

temporarily located for short periods of time and then repositioned as needed. In emergencies it can be used to pump water from a sinking or submerged boat. The partnership was launched at the Southampton International Boat Show.
One of the key new products for Timage in 2021 was the LaPasserella by Besenzoni which was nominated for a DAME Award this year. One of the key features of the gangway, which is the first product in Besenzoni’s new BeElectric series, is that it does not require a hydraulic power pack, making the system not only silent but also the boat lighter. It has been developed to have a lower environmental impact on marine life, due to the automatic fuel reduction and the lower consumption of energy on board in addition to the elimination of hydraulic oil in the device and in the engine room, thereby ensuring that no oil is released into the sea. In addition, it can be coated in synthetic 100% eco-friendly stabilised UV-resistant PVC material which is easy to maintain. Other new products include a range of intelligent yacht control systems, the Sentry Remote Switch and the Sentry MFD App. The Sentry Remote Switch is a Bluetooth enabled switching device which allows for the remote control of systems on board from a Bluetooth enabled smart phone or tablet. The Powerwings steering column digital switching system by Gussi Italia, offers users an ergonomic intelligent steering wheel solution, enabling many onboard systems to be controlled using the paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. founded Boatshed.com in 1999
Neil Chapman does not have ‘salt in his veins’, as is common with many business leaders in the marine sector, but he does have a work-ethic (engrained since childhood), an entrepreneurial spirit, unfailing optimism, a love of boats (since his mid 20s) and a belief technology can help build the ultimate boat sales platform. With such a powerful combination, it’s no surprise he founded the UK’s first online yacht brokerage, Boatshed. Neil grew up in Penkridge, Staffordshire with three siblings; his father Peter was a GP and with wife Barbara, ran several businesses including a narrowboat building firm. “Even as young children we were expected to help, carrying things and cleaning.” When Neil was 11, his parents sold their businesses and bought an hotel in Shropshire. “When we weren’t at school, all four of us were expected to work in the hotel - washing up, carrying suitcases, ferrying food from the kitchen etc.” Unsure about his future career, Neil studied for a HND in chartered surveying in Bristol and then joined Wolverhampton Borough Council. “I hated it, so went back to the family hotel.” A desire to move away from the family business and prove himself, particularly as there was always friendly sibling rivalry (elder brother Lee was head boy and Neil’s school reports always said ‘could do better’), prompted a boat purchase. “It was 21ft, old and wooden, but to me it was a floating island.” Moored close to Milford Haven, aged 26, Neil discovered a love of sailing and after 26 | DECEMBER 2022
part-exchanging a rebuilt Land Rover, he traded up to a 41ft fibreglass Ketch. “It was in a bad condition, but I did it up and planned to go on a ten month sabbatical.” Shipwrecked Neil set off in October 1996. “I headed for Spain but rolled the boat 360 degrees in a 90 knot wind and 15m sea swell, and was shipwrecked in southern Ireland. Despite this, I was convinced my future career lay in boats.” A chance meeting with the owner of Milford Yacht Agency resulted in Neil buying the brokerage. “I had no idea what was involved, other than putting a photo in a window and waiting for buyers to turn up.” When no one came, and mindful of the distance people would have to travel to view the boats, Neil decided to take photos of the areas sellers don’t usually show; the bilges, internal wiring etc. “I couldn’t afford to print off photos and pay for advertising, so a techie friend helped me set up a website, which I rebranded Boatshed.com, and posted up the images. This was in 1999, so the early days of the internet.”
In his first year Neil sold 118 boats and within 18 months he was approached to sell the Welsh business rights. “I then sailed to Gibraltar, set up the same business model and sold this within a year.” Neil knew Boatshed had a proven, successful business model and asked his accountant to write a franchise agreement. “I sailed back to Portsmouth and decided to base the business in Gosport, our current HQ.” Global brokerage Since then, Boatshed has grown its franchise business and now has 16 head office staff remotely supporting 70+ global brokerages in 18 countries, selling
collectively more than 1,000 boats a year. Its USP is its business model; a combination of technology and people. “We’re totally transparent and share everything people need to know about their potential purchase, and by using Artificial Intelligence, our systems track the behaviour of 1.2m active users, the brands they prefer, models to recommend and when to intervene and contact potential buyers. “But technology can’t replace everything, so we need local people on the ground, to view the boats, take photos, liaise with surveyors and generally facilitate the sale.” During the pandemic

Neil followed his ‘gas knobs’ principle, which is having the flexibility to turn overheads up or down, according to demand. “I learnt from hotel work, when it’s busy in the summer and quiet in the winter, it’s vital to be able to alter some overheads while keeping the business lynchpins in place.” Unsurprisingly Neil primarily runs Boatshed from his boat and calls himself a ‘Boatshed Ambassador’. When not on his boat, he can be found in campervans in Europe, on the west coast of the USA or at Gosport HQ. Continually upbeat, Neil agrees with his father’s approach to life ‘no matter what the challenge, there’s a way around it’. “It’s about not giving up; if you want something enough you can make it happen.” This, his business model and ethos to ‘be polite, enthusiastic and nice to everyone you meet’ puts Neil in a good place to reach his goal of having a Boatshed in every port. 8 Neil sold 118 boats within his first year of founding Boatshed.com

Richard Thoroughgood has returned to Seldén Mast’s sales team - for the third time. In his new role as sales account manager, Richard will be responsible for sales and customer service to existing yacht and dinghy sales accounts as well as finding new markets for Seldén’s rigging, sail handling and deck hardware products. In addition, Richard will be involved in spar and boat package specification for OEMs as well as product design, testing and production planning. Richard began his career in the marine industry in 1999 with the Marine Force chandlery group before spending several years teaching sailing both in the UK and aboard. He returns to Seldén following his most recent role as workshop manager at Marine Matters in Warsash, Hampshire. “Richard brings over 20 years of marine industry experience and product knowledge, across a wide range of different boats and different sailing disciplines,” said Sam Vaughan, head of sales at Seldén. “With his excellent knowledge of Seldén and its products from his previous tenures with us, we are extremely confident that he will be an outstanding asset to our growing team.” Grant’s career includes 18 years with Princess Yachts where he worked in a number of roles culminating in the position of purchasing director and member of the Board of Directors. xxx He has also spent a couple of years at Fairline Yachts as commercial and supply chain director. As Zeelander CEO his role will encompass overseeing all commercial activities from planning and production operations to finance and supply chain management to ensuring that financial results are consistent with business objectives. “I’ve long admired Zeelander as a top-end boatbuilder and watched as the brand has grown its name and portfolio of products,” he said. “I’m excited to now be a part of that ongoing expansion and I’m working with the development team to continue creating unique products that exceed customer expectations, while also building strong relationships with key suppliers and partners.” Sietse Koopmans, owner and founder of Zeelander Yachts, added: “I’m confident that Grant’s wealth of experience and industry expertise will ensure the group’s long-term growth plans are realised. “We have an unprecedented number of boats on order, so we’ve brought in Grant to make certain that these boats are being delivered on time and beyond expectations all around the globe.”

Osmotech has appointed Doug Stacey as sales and office manager. He takes over from Mark Parkins who recently retired from the company. Doug is a qualified marine engineer with many years of experience within the marine industry. “I am very excited to take on this role, having worked together with Osmotech for many years, I am honoured to have been offered this role,” he said. “I have technical knowledge and a wealth of experience in the boating sector. I will be responsible for responding to sales leads, technical sales, online sales, procurement, and shipping of products to customers.” James Coker, sales director for Osmotech added: “Doug is an excellent appointment for Osmotech. He already has an established relationship with our customers, technical team, and suppliers.” Osmotech supplies and fits a range of systems, bow thrusters, stabilisers, generators and heaters to vessels. Arksen has appointed Dominic Byrne to the newly created role of sales and marketing director. He joins the boatbuilder with more than 25 years’ experience in the luxury marine and data communications industries. “Arksen is not typical of the mainstream superyacht business, its proposition is unique, and this really appealed to me,” said Dominic. “Arksen clients are looking for something different, it’s the combination of owning a yacht with genuine explorer credentials and the freedom that provides, coupled with the opportunity to maximise their ownership experience by having access to a blend of an owners club and concierge service to help them realise their adventure.” Arksen has also created five new roles in addition to Dominic’s appointment. These include Rob Vankalsbeek, technical project manager, Donald Hung, digital marketing lead, Sonia Jackson, communications and events lead, project engineer George Johnson and client project manager, Matthew Morgan. Derek Lumb has been elected as president of the Cruising Association (CA), succeeding outgoing president Julian Dussek. A CA member since 2008 and an active volunteer, Derek steps up to the presidency from his role as council member and vice-president. The position of president is primarily to act as an ambassador and flag bearer for the CA and ensure the interests of the yacht and motor cruising community are actively represented across the worldwide remit of the association. “I am honoured to find myself president of this fabulous organisation,” he said. “Fabulous because it has such knowledgeable and capable members who are so willing to share their experience and knowledge. The Cruising Association is its members.” DECEMBER 2022 | 27
