PAINTS AND COATINGS Birchwood Marine is to relaunch the Birchwood brand. The company, headed by Ernie Vick, has acquired a Memorandum of Understanding /Joint Manufacturing Agreement with an established yard in Argentina to build a range of models from 34ft - 74ft with both sport and flybridge models custom built to customer requirements. These will be 'Birchwood branded' for the UK, EU, US and potentially the UAE and China markets. “Due to the recession, we stopped manufacturing in the UK and decided to look further afield,” said Ernie. “Subsequently we had boats built at a shipyard in South East China, but due to the economic downturn in China, the yard decided to close.” The company is now hoping to raise funds through Crowdcube with the investment initially being used to fund at

least two boats to be displayed at the Southampton Boat Show. “The name Birchwood traditionally was considered to be one of the top five boat companies from which to buy a new boat,” said Ernie. “Half a century of being known as a quality boat builder with a committed dealer network speaks for itself. “The owners expect a solid boat with exceptional handling and performance. “Our boats have not disappointed and offer their owner's peace of mind in any weather. The proposed new range will ensure that this is still the case for the future.” Initial models will include the Birchwood 430 flybridge and the Birchwood 640 flybridge.

The acquisition is designed to secure Flexiteek's position as the market leader in synthetic teak decking and marine fendering. Wilks, based in Essex, was established in 1973. The family-owned company has been manufacturing part of the Flexiteek range for more than three years. “The acquisition of Wilks will provide a high-quality manufacturing base with research and development facilities,” said Tomas Gustafsson, Flexiteek International CEO. “This will enable Flexiteek to continue to develop innovative and firstclass synthetic decking systems for years to come. “We aim to incorporate the existing Dek-King network into our own; the Wilks marine fendering range can now also be supplied through our existing distributors worldwide.”
Chris Berry, Wilks joint MD, added: “We are delighted to see Wilks join Flexiteek International. “We are confident that working together will provide the international marine market with the best quality of products available. Going forward we will continue to focus on PVC extrusion and further developing the marine fendering range. Nothing fundamentally will change.” Introduced in 2000, Flexiteek is the developer of 2G technology supplying a network of more than 100 distributors across 40 countries. Wilks’ own 2G synthetic teak range, DekKing, will merge with the Flexiteek brand in late 2019. Flexiteek plans to retain Wilks’ manufacturing premises along with all employees. OEM clients currently include Royal Huisman, Hanse Group, Jeanneau, Beneteau Group, Princess Yachts, Gulf Craft, Sunseeker International and X-Yachts.

SEABINS LAUNCH AT ST. KATHARINE DOCKS
If a customer is looking for a rib they can concentrate on one hall; equally if they are looking for a superyacht, the majority are again in one hall And the way the Germans have organised the show is working, with the British heading across to Düsseldorf in their droves – both customers, exhibitors and sales reps. Even the customs official at Southampton Airport commented on how many people he’d spoken to had been to the show. British Marine needs to make sure this year’s Southampton show is a success to ensure it doesn’t go the same way as London. Already several of the leisure marine industry’s larger exhibitors are stating they probably won’t be exhibiting this year and I gather the show is losing even more land space due to the city council’s redevelopment plans. And with Brexit looming large and taking up vast amounts of business owners’ time, companies need all the encouragement they can get. One company owner I spoke to had lost count of the hours – several hundred - she has spent preparing for Brexit and the possibility of a no deal. One scenario she is seriously considering is opening a European hub and moving some production overseas with a loss of British jobs. On all counts, small businesses are not receiving the help they need…

St. Katharine Docks in London has introduced its first three Seabins as part of a commitment to invest in sustainability and eco-friendly projects to reduce the amount of waste found in the River Thames and the ocean.
Each floating rubbish bin can collect up to half a tonne of floating debris per year, including microplastics as small as 2mm. A submersible water pump, capable of displacing 25,000 litres per hour, sucks water in from the surface which then passes

My first boot Düsseldorf was without doubt an eyeopener. I had been told by several people that it was a big show but nothing prepared me for quite how vast it actually was. Seventeen halls – each around the size of the 2018 London Boat Show – might seem daunting to visitors but the fact that is was so well organised (what else would you expect from the Germans) and laid out with the customer in mind made it the perfect place to see the latest craft of all shapes and sizes and the latest products, gadgets and gizmos. If a customer is looking for a rib they can concentrate on one hall; equally if they are looking for a superyacht, the majority are again in one hall. And what was particularly refreshing – as I had pointed out to me by several people – was not only the amount of couples going round the show together but also the number of dogs that were taken along by their owners. To me it makes sense to allow our (well-behaved) fourlegged friends into a show. Shows want to attract as many potential customers as possible and should be doing all they can to encourage people to visit and if a dog-friendly show clinches more sales then let’s follow the German’s example in the UK.

through a catch bag inside the Seabin. Clean water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped inside. “We have been following the success of the Seabin project for quite some time and are delighted to have three Seabins at St. Katharine Docks as part of our continuous effort to maintain a sustainable marina,” said Paul Tetlow, marina manager at St. Katharine Docks, managed by Camper and Nicholsons Marinas. POLLUTION CONTROL The Seabins at St. Katharine Docks are located in the West Dock and Central Basin. They are checked on a regular basis and emptied as required, with the recyclable waste disposed of by the marina team. St. Katharine Docks estimates that the three Seabins could catch around 1,500kgs of rubbish per year, therefore playing a crucial role in preventing it from flowing back into the River Thames and more widely into the oceans. The initiative follows St. Katharine Docks' efforts to be a 'greener marina' over the past few years, supporting projects such as The Whale Company and #ForFishsSake.

In a Harvard Business School study on goal setting and success, 84% did not have goals, 13% had goals in their mind, whilst only 3% had written goals. Unsurprisingly the study went on to discover that the most successful participants by far, were those who had solid written goals. It is all too easy to go through the working day being hugely busy, but not actually achieving anything to help you move forwards if you do not have a focus to spend time working towards. Getting caught up in the moment can be detrimental to future success. January 2019 has already disappeared, so if you have not set any goals now is the time to get thinking. Better still, writing... SMART goals ensure the best chance of success, but what does that mean? 5 Specific - Focus on exactly what you want the outcome to be. 5 Measurable - Ensure you have a clear definition of success, so you can analyse your achievements. 5 Achievable - Set yourself a challenge, but make sure that there is still a reasonable chance of achieving it. 5 Relevant - Is your goal worthwhile? Is the desired outcome a priority for you and how does it fit with your overall strategy? 5 Time Bound - A goal with no time restriction is not really a goal. Deadlines provide excellent motivation. Set your goals for 2019 today and stick them somewhere visible for you to see on a daily basis. Give yourself the best chance of a really successful year.

New records Boot Düsseldorf 2019 has set a new record with almost 2,000 exhibitors and 250,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. Their main home countries – apart from Germany – were the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain, Switzerland and Italy. One of the biggest growth areas was the chartering market with the choice of 1,500 sailing yachts and motorboats together with an increase in recreational diving and watersports such as stand-up paddling, windsurfing, surfing and wakeboarding activities.
Dura Composites has expanded its decking range to include Dura Desk Resist, a co-extruded board with a 360° outer angle. The company has also relaunched Dura Deck Eco, that is available in two widths and three colourways and is said to be 60% stronger than similar products. Dura's new decking board, Resist, is produced from recycled materials via a coextrusion process and comes in six colours. It is fire resistant and achieves Bfl-s1 according to BS EN 13501. Dura Composites' MD, Stuart Burns, believes that now is the time for developers to focus on reducing costs whilst promoting sustainability.

Sailing coach Martin Boatman has died after a two-year battle with cancer, aged 34. In 2008, Martin began working with the RYA as the assistant zone squad coach in the North region assisting Dave Hivey, with the Topper dinghy class. He soon took the lead of the Northern Topper Zone Squad before being promoted to the role of national coach for the Laser 4.7 squad in 2014. “Martin was the natural choice for this role, said Tim Hall, the RYA's single handed pathway manager. “He was looking for a new coaching challenge alongside his teaching and fitted in straight away.” One of his passions was promoting girls' sailing, achieving a 50/50 gender split in his squad. As well as coaching sailors, Martin became a valued leader within the RYA

decking products has never been greater,” he said. Stuart explained how a growing environmental conscience was affecting the luxury yacht market: “Illegal logging of the Ipe tree and scandals
surrounding yachts built with illegitimate teak from Myanmar have made headlines this year and have made many deck builders wary of using tropical hardwoods for their projects,” he said. Composite decking used by Dura is a hybrid product made from a mixture of hardwood waste and recycled plastic. Much of this material would otherwise have ended up in landfill. “Complete transparency needn't be a problem if you opt for a composite,” concluded Stuart.

BUSINESSMATTERS YEN-PEI CHEN: ACCA
WOULD YOU R&D CREDIT IT? Don't let the tax tail wag the investment dog. In other words, don't follow a course of action because the tax system seems to make it worthwhile, writes Yen-Pei Chen. That said, a business may be involved with research and development (R&D) and it may be eligible to claim R&D (tax) relief on the costs. The R&D reliefs regime is a core part of the government's drive to encourage innovative businesses in the UK. They are by no means reserved for large companies. There are two types: 5 SME R&D relief is available to SMEs with less than 500 staff and either a turnover of under £100m or a balance sheet total of under £86m. The SME tax credit gives a total 230% deduction on qualifying R&D expenses. 5 Research and development expenditure credit (RDEC) is available to all firms who have been subcontracted to carry out R&D work for large companies. RDEC is calculated at 11% of the qualifying R&D expenses. It's taxable but the credit is paid in cash.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY To qualify for R&D relief, there must be work that advances overall knowledge or capability in a field of science or technology. And here, science or technology means science or technology. Take the example of a firm developing new containers that gives microwaveable meals in them a longer shelflife - it qualifies for R&D; developing new containers that make meals look much more appealing to shoppers does not. And then there's the word overall. This means that the firm must be aiming to create an advance in an overall field, not just for its business. So, for example, a marine company upgrading its GPS mapping system to make navigation more efficient would not get R&D tax credits.
costs would qualify for workers directly working on the R&D project, but recruitment costs would not.
possible or technologically feasible. However, anything that could be resolved by hiring a consultant for a few months or sitting down in a meeting with the company's engineers, would most likely not qualify as R&D. Even if the project ultimately fails it could still qualify as R&D.
FEASIBLE Firms must also be trying to overcome an uncertainty that competent professionals can't readily resolve. Here there has to be uncertainty at the outset as to how to achieve the outcome, or whether it is scientifically
ALLOWABLE EXPENSES The principles laid out, the next natural question is what counts as an allowable expense? Staff costs, often a big part of R&D expenses, are covered by both reliefs provided the staff in question are directly and actively
engaged in the R&D project. For employees, their salaries and wages, national insurance contributions and pension contributions all qualify for R&D tax credits. A portion of the costs for supervisory or managerial staff could also qualify. The costs for administrative support staff would most likely not qualify. In terms of subcontractors, normally 65% of subcontractor costs would qualify, but different rules apply if the staff provider is connected to the company. Also, subcontractor costs do not qualify for RDEC. And as for externally provided workers, some
DAY-TO-DAY COSTS In addition, it's possible to claim the day-to-day costs relating to materials and utilities, including electricity and water bills. Software can also be counted: where a piece of software is only used partly for the R&D project, the relevant cost will need to be apportioned. Any costs linked to market research, initial feasibility studies, patent applications, production and distribution are excluded. R&D reliefs are for the day-to-day running costs of R&D projects. So capital expenditure, such as plant, machinery and buildings, won't qualify. Lastly, the procedure for claiming R&D tax relief is straightforward as it can be claimed through the full company tax return (CT600). It helps to provide a brief summary of the project to support the claim. 8 Yen-Pei Chen is manager of corporate reporting and tax at the ACCA
BREXIT EIFRION EVANS: Lumishore
LOVE IT OR HATE IT. YOU JUST CANNOT IGNORE IT I am of course referring to Brexit. As I write this, parliament is pulling itself apart as they deal with the impossible, i.e. deciding which shade of grey we will end up having to recognise in terms of our dealings in mainland Europe and our Irish friends. It doesn’t matter what my personal views are. My duty is 100% to Lumishore’s loyal customers, employees and other stakeholders, wherever they are physically located. Whatever else happens
12 | FEBRUARY 2019
I have to ensure that Lumishore stays ahead of the competition. If Lumishore can use the current environment to push further ahead of competitors then of course, we will. A lot of people seem to believe that Brexit has had little impact on the UK’s trade with Europe over the last 18 months. I think that is a long way from the truth in that my own daily dealings with European customers suggest that there is a questioning look directed in
our direction. Put yourself in the shoes of an Italian shipbuilder, would you not be worried about continuity of supply, pricing and support? It is all a matter of trust and few marriages end with divorcing partners staying bound at the hip. So what does the future bring? With double digit days left to E-Day I haven’t got a clue. In these circumstances all Lumishore can do is create contingency plans. Lumishore’s contingency planning is geared to
continuity of supply in what people refer to as a Hard Brexit scenario, especially in the three months following Britain’s exit. Any ‘softer’ exit and we should be able to adapt those plans. We started our planning about 12 months ago and elements of that plan have been put in place over the last five months. Accelerating production, a European distribution hub, quicker superyacht deliveries and significant financial investment. These are just a
few of the contingencies we felt it was worth taking rather than saying ‘let’s wait and see’. Brexit may still come to nothing but I can’t take that risk and standing around idly hoping it goes away just isn’t a realistic option. When E-Day arrives I also know that whatever plans we have made, there will be unforeseen challenges. The Lumishore team knows that the expectation is that we resolve those fast. It’s what our customers and clients quite rightly expect.

With the general increase in the price of raw materials, manufacturers are devising new ways of keeping end costs reduced. Awlgrip's new product, Quick Build, is a prime example of this, points out Marineware's Adrian Layton. With its fast-drying times and tintable formula it provides a fast primer and also reduces application and cure times. “With the Awlcraft range of topcoats this is further exploited and with the cure schedule almost three times as quick as some of its competitors, it allows the customer to get a finished article in faster times, in some instances, primer to topcoat in one day,” said Adrian. “This not only reduces staff costs but also the time required to heat and ventilate the spray booth and the time the vessel is in the booth.” COST REDUCTION Cost savings can also be achieved through the use of a `professional` brush applied topcoat such as International Perfection pro. “Feedback seems to be that customers are managing a very good standard of finish without the need to `tent` and cover the yacht as would be required when spraying, again allowing the yard to do whole boats or just boot lines without the need for

expensive spray facilities and bringing a reduction in cost and a faster turnaround,” explained Adrian. Marineware has also seen a general increase in one pack varnishes, with a shift in sales on Epifanes traditional gloss varnish and Awlgrip Awlwood overtaking the traditional two pack users, a shift Adrian puts down to their traditional look finish and ease of application over their two pack counterparts. As technology continues to filter down from America's Cup boats, Adrian points out there is driving demand for coatings to match the high loads and speed requirements.
A key development is the use of foils and their associated high wear during lifting and trimming. Nautix has responded to this requirement for a harder smoother finish with its NX194 coating. The product contains high hardness particles that protect the surface against abrasion and additives to reduce surface friction. It is available in white, black and orange. For a clear finish there is Durepox Extreme that has a high crosslink density. COLOUR CENTRE Other trends Marineware is seeing include a shift in

colour choice with Adrian predicting a limited colour card becoming a thing of the past. “With the help of Akzo Nobel we have been developing a `colour centre` where later this year we will be able to develop and
match each individual colour,” he said. “With new technology from Akzo we can already offer 17,000 colours from the data base but with the introduction of more advanced spectrometers we will be able to match metallics, pearlescent and also develop with the customer brand new colour formulations all within the Marineware.” He added: “The technology is unique to Akzo.” It will be available in the Awlcraft and the newly launched Quantum, a twopack polyurethane interior product available in a range of gloss levels from 10-90%. It is part of a range developed from the German brand Zwierhorn that meets the demands of current IMO requirements.
“Unlike other products for this purpose Defender 613 is a high build formulation with mica platelets, which form a layered barrier within the coating system,” Graham added. “Defender can also be used as an anti-corrosive primer on steel and aluminium making it well suited to be a universal underwater primer to protect the hull under all types of antifouling paint.” The primer is available in grey and white.

ANTIFOULING ADDITIONS International has introduced several additions to its antifouling range, each tailored towards individual boat owners and levels of fouling. Boatguard 100 is a low-cost antifouling, designed to repel all fouling organisms while being quick and easy to apply. Cruiser 200 is a bright white polishing antifouling that can be applied on all substrates including aluminium. Cruiser 250 is a polishing antifouling, designed to offer year-round protection in all but the worst fouling environments. Uni-Pro 250 is an antifouling designed for professional application while Ultra 300 is a hard antifouling, optimised to give a smooth finish that can scrubbed if needed. The last new antifoul from International is Micron 350 that gives two-year protection in all conditions using advanced self-polishing copolymer technology. Outside the antifouling range, International’s most recent product is Super Gloss HS. The gloss topcoat can be roller applied without the need for tipping off and is available in 750ml tins and ten colours. Also new is Perfection Pro, an ultra-high gloss topside paint for a lasting finish with chemical, abrasion and UV resistance, plus strong colour retention. It can be sprayed, brushed or rolled.
Teal & Mackrill works closely with the British Coating Federation and the Marine Coatings Group especially with regards to legislation and potential demands in the industry. New product development continues to be defined by environmental and regulatory requirements in the marine industry and with this in mind, the search for an antifoul solution in the leisure industry continues. “Whilst biocide free release systems are available for some vessels and structures they are not suitable in all circumstances,” points out Teamac's marketing manager Danielle Dutton. “Often boats are on the water for long periods with little or no movement and yachts generally don't reach the suitable speeds to enable release type products to work effectively.” PRODUCT TESTING “Teal and Mackrill continues to satisfy the demands of this area of the market with its Owatrol Coatings UK has continued to expand its marine range with six new products bought to the UK market in 2018. These have included a nonslip coating, engine and bilge degreaser and cleaning products for sails and awnings. Peelaway Marine is a revolutionary new water-based product, free from heavy solvents, acids and alkalis. It is a clean and environmentally friendly solution to safely remove multiple layers of antifoul coatings in one application without the damage to the gel coat associated with scraping and sand blasting. This less aggressive solution to antifoul removal reduces the chance of breaking osmotic blisters unknowingly. Peelaway Marine works by softening the antifouling in preparation for removal, leaving the boat owner, yard hand or marine professional free to get on with other important tasks on the boat. Its patented paste system allows the product to remain active and work without rapidly drying out. The paste can be applied to the hull and left for up to 48 hours with no adverse effects to the substrate. The special blanket also helps to stop the product drying out and collect the stripped paint, reducing the risk of boatyard and water course contamination. This unique system removes the dangers of the fumes and toxic airborne particles that are usually associated with manual antifoul removal. Peelaway Marine is a light paste consistency and is easy to apply to vertical surfaces and difficult shapes. It can be applied with a brush or trowel and for larger areas airless spray can be used. The product is available as a test kit as well as 4kg and 10kg tubs, all which include the blankets and spatula. The handy test kit gives the
opportunity to apply the product to various areas of the hull, allowing the chance to perfect dwell time and application thickness before investing in the full quantity. Additional blankets are also available if they are required. Due to the nature of the product very minimal personal protective equipment is needed, typically only goggles, gloves and mask.
Peelaway Marine is suitable for most hull types including GRP, wood and metal. It is recommended that you always test a small inconspicuous area before applying to the wider hull area. Coverage: 1kg of Peelaway Marine covers 2-4m² at 1-2mm thickness. Generally, 10kg of product will cover approximately 20m².
Take a closer look at this revolutionary antifoul removal product and offer your customers a pain free solution to one of the worst jobs on the boat.

JOTUN OFFERS PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE
8 Coppercoat is a hard coating that can be scrubbed
CUSTOMERS ARE ASKING FOR COPPERCOAT Symblast's Paul Hockey has noticed a trend away from the use of conventional antifoul over the last 12 months, with as many as 60% of his customers asking for Coppercoat. And Paul believes one of the key reasons is the low impact of the antifoul making it environmentally friendly. “Our customers are concerned about the environment and the impact of traditional antifouls,” said Paul. “It's a shame that the silicones are not suitable for yachts at this point as they don't seem to have the performance of other antifouls.” And he said that while there are silicone films which do work, they come at a price that is several times more expensive than Coppercoat. “Over the long term, Coppercoat works out cheaper than conventional antifouls,” said Paul. “It's a hard coating that can be scrubbed making it ideal for yachts.”
Consumer confidence in antifouling performance is low, says Jotun Yachting's business development manager James Brickwood, however this is something that the company has been working hard to rectify. Non Stop II antifoul has been developed to work up to an average cruising speed of 25 knots and is suitable for sail and power boats. SAFETY
Most marine insurance policies state that boats must have adequate fire protection says Sea-Fire's Richard Duckworth. But he says many boatbuilders are fitting the minimum protection they can get away with and crossing their fingers it will never be put to the test. “For the last 20 years, major production boat builders have recognised they have a duty of care to protect their customers and to fit as standard a comprehensive engine room fire suppression system using fully tested and marine approved components,” says Richard. “Unfortunately, this is not mirrored across all the industry.” AFTERTHOUGHT And he said safety and fire suppression should not be an afterthought in the build or refit process. Instead systems need to be designed specific to each boat as one size does not fit all. “In many ways, it is understandable that fire suppression on board is overlooked. The actual percentage of boat fires in relation to boat usage is very small,” he said. “However, as boats have become larger, the equipment fitted on-board has grown exponentially. “This increase in power hungry equipment has led to an increase in the fire risk.” This is made worse by the fact that a fire at sea is a serious risk to life and leads to the total loss of the boat if it can't quickly be brought under control. CLEAN AGENT And Richard pointed out that the best in class fire

Besto Lifesavers is continuously developing its range of leisure and professional safety equipment to meet customer requirements for personalisation and comfort. New products include the Besto Comfort Fit Pro 165N and 300N, a new and enhanced series of inflatable lifejackets with ergonomic design for comfort. The Besto Sailor 50N is a buoyancy aid for sailing designed to offer a highquality finish, freedom of movement and comfort. Modern fabric designs have been added to the standard colour options of the 50N buoyancy aids and the 100N children's ranges. “At Besto, we feel that lifejacket manufacturers have the responsibility to
raise awareness regarding safety and to offer lifejackets that people want to wear,” explained Bob van de Laar, sales and marketing manager for Lankhorst Taselaar, owners of the Besto brand. “Regulations are becoming stricter for a reason but it also important that consumers take responsibility to ensure their lifejackets are functional and have been serviced in case of an emergency.” And he explained that designing a lifejacket that combines exceptional standards of safety and comfort for professional sailors and heavy-duty use has proved to be one of Besto's biggest challenges. The Besto Extreme 300N
“There is no point in committing to a clean agent system if the first thing that happens during a fire is for
the agent to be immediately depleted by the exhaust and ventilation,” he said. “The sustainable clean agent for the future is 3M Novec 1230. As other agents with high global warming potentials are currently being phased out, the fire industry has adopted Novec 1230 as the most effective solution with the best environmental profile.” Richard added: “Measured over the lifetime of the boat, a fire suppression system is probably one of the best value purchases that boat owners can make to ensure the protection of their investment and the safety of their family and friends.”

In addition, specialisation of equipment for professional rescue organisations has proved invaluable for Besto as it has provided the company with the knowledge and expertise to translate into improvements to the leisure range. “In cooperation with the Dutch fishing fleet, we designed a bespoke fishing lifejacket fitted with an AIS that the fishermen were happy to wear on the job in tough conditions and tight spaces,” explained Bob. “Together with the Dutch fishing association, we

SURVITEC SUPPLIES 2000 CREWSAVERS Survitec has supplied French search and rescue organisation Les Sauveteurs en Mer (SNSM) with 2,000 bespoke Crewsaver lifejackets. Successful contracts with the UK's Royal National Lifeboat Institute and the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution were instrumental in securing the significant deal with the French organisation. SAFETY AND COMFORT Benjamin Serfati, purchasing director at SNSM explained that personal protection is key. “We had only one concern throughout this project - the safety and comfort of our rescuers,” he said. Survitec's sales director, David Duffin, spoke of the company's excitement to be working with a highly respected search and rescue organisation. “It is a great endorsement of our equipment that an international body such as the SNSM, which requires the very best for its rescue volunteers, would seek us out.” The lifejackets are equipped with a high specification twin-chamber bladder design and cover which moulds to the shape of the wearer. However, now the company, which launched its BackTow lifejacket harness in 2017, is on track to expand its product range, take on additional staff and an apprentice. “It's deeply satisfying seeing the team grow,” said Lauren. “We were manufacturing in China but decided to move production to the UK so we could control quality and stock levels.” Already new colours have been added, with plans to introduce two new types of lifejackets in 2019, one for a day sailor with no deck harness and one for the keel boat and yacht racing community that will work 'in a new way'. “Being able to develop a

year and the investment has allowed us to grow into the new unit. “We've got plans to add more machines so that we can do more complicated sewing.” The products are distributed by C-Quip. 8 TeamO has introduced new colours to its BackTow lifejacket

NEW FLARE RANGE FROM SEAGO YACHTING
FEEDBACK FROM VOR CREATES DECKVEST VITO In 2017 Spinlock was asked to develop a new lifejacket for the Volvo Ocean Race teams, a departure from previous editions of the 45,000-mile race. Volvo wanted a partner to use the latest technology to develop a custom lifejacket designed to meet the specific requirements of the sailors, explained Oliver Cook from Spinlock's UK distributor, Marathon. Feedback from the crew and analysis of the jackets at the race stop overs, have now led to Spinlock creating the Deckvest VITO. “It offers all the features, technology and development from the Volvo Ocean Race Deckvest,” said Oliver. “Comfort, fit and adjustment immediately stand out as key features.” The lifejacket is fitted with Spinlock's latest buckle system and also includes a Harness Quick Release System (HRS). “The option to quickly release a safety line can be lifesaving in certain situations and is recognised in the Offshore Special Regulations by the requirement to carry a knife,” explained Oliver. “However knives can often be inaccessible and hard to use in an emergency. “The Spinlock HRS is concealed, yet easy to find and simple to operate, an industry first in design.”

Seago Yachting is to introduce a range of its own brand pyrotechnic flares in March, a move designed to go hand in hand with the company's liferaft servicing. The signal flares will be sold in packs and will consist of red hand flares, orange hand flares, buoyant smoke, parachute rockets and a white collision flare, plus a full range of other pyrotechnics. The move adds to Seago Yachting's safety portfolio that includes SOLAS approved liferafts and an MCA approved service station. “In order to service SOLAS liferafts, we have to be MCA approved,” explained Seago's Kieron Sullivan. “We're reaching out to the commercial and the fishing market to supply them with
SOLAS approved liferafts. The MCA approval means we're able to offer a complete package from supplying a
liferaft to servicing it.” In addition, Seago is able to service all brands of lifejackets.

SAILORS ARE TAKING THEIR SPORT TO EXTREMES There is no doubt that safety awareness has increased significantly in the last decade says Ocean Safety's Alistair Hackett. Personal safety equipment has become more widely available - and more widely used and accepted. “Gung-ho attitudes at sea
are being replaced by a consciousness which, far from turning sailors into non-risk takers, is enabling them to take their sport to ever greater extremes, be it global solo and ultrafast sailing or high-performance dinghies and catamarans,” explained Alistair.
“Modern technology, from electronics and satellite communication on ocean going yachts to the advanced fabrics and lightweight helmets that allow dinghy sailors to be out racing for 12 months of the year have introduced countless new opportunities for being on the water in ever more challenging environments.” HIRE CONTRACTS New technologies and modern design have also helped - the development of lifejackets so that they are 'barely there' such as Ocean Safety's Kru range means active sailors are more likely 8 Ocean Safety’s Ultralite liferaft is lighter and easier to launch
to wear them, added Alistair. And he pointed out that a reluctance to carry liferafts due to high costs is being overcome with the availability of hire contracts and with the introduction of Ocean Safety's SOLAS approved Ultralite liferaft, they are lighter and therefore easier to launch. “Developed for the 2017/2018 Volvo Ocean Race, the Ultralite is just one example of developments for high end sailing projects that have trickled down to the cruising and club racing markets,” explained Alistair. At the same time more sailing teams and organisations are signing up to training courses to learn how to operate equipment in an emergency.

BSI URGED TO DEVELOP PRE STANDARD
River Canal Rescue is urging boaters to pay more attention to vessel maintenance and safety following an increase in the number of call-outs for faults caused by a general lack of maintenance. In 2016, this amounted to 948 call-outs, in 2017 there were 1031 and in 2018 RCR had 1081 call-outs due to lack of maintenance and safety, together with continuing fires and CO poisoning incidents. “Boaters who fail to maintain their vessels or pay attention to boat safety put themselves and others at risk,” said RCR operations director, Jay Forman. ACCOMMODATION OPTION “With rental costs spiralling across the UK, boats are a cheap accommodation option and so increasing in popularity. Yet we find many boaters unfamiliar with even basic engine workings and therefore unlikely to pay attention to maintenance.” He added: “This can cause a problem if a vessel moves from its mooring, breaks down and obstructs the waterway.” And he said RCR engineers frequently come across vessels with no smoke or CO alarms that have fire risks and ventilation issues. “It's frightening when you think of the hazards on boats such as diesel, oils and combustible materials. The most common fires are electrical, engine space and solid fuel related so it's vital boat owners pay attention to these areas,” explained Jay.

LACK OF MAINTENANCE LEADS TO CALL-OUTS
The British Standards Institute (BSI) has been encouraged to develop a standard for public rescue equipment (PRE) following the failure of a throw bag rescue line during a capsize drill in Widnes. The incident, in which no one was injured, took place in a training incident at the Warrington Rowing Club. A young person was pulled to the side of the pool using a RIBER throw bag rescue line, the line broke. Tests revealed that one of the four thermally fused joints had failed. Furthermore these joined sections were found to be 12 times weaker than the line itself. A customer notification campaign identified a further ten throw bags with defective rescue lines.

exposed to sunlight, loss of strength when subject to friction and poor attachment of the line to the bag. Other than the general obligation under EU rules that 'all products entering the EU
RECOMMENDATIONS As a result of this incident, the MAIB has published a safety bulletin warning of potential dangers and providing guidance on how to identify poorly manufactured throw bag rescue lines. The organisation has also supplied user feedback to the BSI to inform any future standard that may be developed. Finally it has recommended that the BSI develop an appropriate standard for PRE ensuring that throw bags and their rescue lines are addressed as a priority.

PROFILE
JONATHAN FIELDING FALMOUTH BOAT CO
Falmouth Boat Co MD, Jonathan Fielding, spent his teenage years working on the Falmouth pleasure boats, taking tourists to Mylor Yacht Harbour for cream teas. Some 30 years on, his own Flushing boatyard is close to where he first started out. “Mylor's MD spotted my potential and 'posh accent' and in November 1987 asked me to join the brokerage team.” At age 18, Jonathan felt he could make a difference to an 'antiquated business' that needed a 'computer boost'. His endeavours - to make the operation more user-friendly - resulted in the brokerage growing, franchising to Ancasta and Jonathan running the service yard. HUGE RESPECT By 1996, Jonathan was appointed general manager and when Roger Graffy bought the company in 1997, he retained his position. “I have huge respect for Roger, he introduced a proper business plan and with his wife Dinah, we turned the business into a fully-fledged marina, boatyard and 'go-to' destination.” During this time Jonathan also studied remotely for a Master of Business Administration at Henley Business School and in 2009 he left the business to set up
a management consultancy. “The time was right to use my knowledge, experience and connections to help marine-based clients refinance and re-structure their businesses and guide them through periods of change.” One such client was Falmouth Boat Construction. Jonathan was called in - at short notice - to prepare a bid to renew a long-standing RNLI contract, but with the RNLI using fewer external boatyards, the contract was withdrawn. “I worked hard to try and secure the future of the boatyard, but it looked pretty dicey for the company and so the owner was keen to withdraw.” MIXED REPUTATION Jonathan however was keen to secure the future of a business with 16 staff and a £650,000 turnover, so in June 2013, he bought it. “The firm had a mixed reputation, undertaking primarily small commercial work, so I had a huge challenge on my hands. First step was to rebrand as Falmouth Boat Co and offer a service proposition that focused on quality of work, customer service and transparency.” All businesses profess to be customer focused and transparent, but Jonathan was quick to prove it. He introduced a selfmanagement system enabling customers to access Falmouth Boat Co's database of project costs

and track progress via their web browser. All project activity is posted up within 24 hours of completion and customers can view material charges, plus the hours and time sheets of people working on their boats. eggs all in one basket, the business mix is now 30% commercial and 70% leisure. “We offer the full skill set: laminators, engineers, electricians, painters etc and access to welders and riggers, providing everything from mooring, storage, repairs, renovation and restoration, to refurbishing, finishing, engineering, insurance work and winter lay ups.
In five years, we've grown to a £1.7m turnover business with 37 staff and my sights are now on the Scilly Isles and a second boatyard in Falmouth DIVERSE PROJECTS Jonathan maximised the 10,000sqm space potential, cleaned up the overgrown laying-up area, re-surfaced the car park and updated the lighting and workshops. The business soon began to flourish; the RNLI repair contract returned and commercial and leisure contracts came in (diverse projects included restoring a sleek timber International One Design for the Jersey Boat Show and fully rebuilding three contenders for the 2018 Golden Globe Race). Keen not to put his
“We're at capacity with around 65 project boats coming through each year and some of these are big contracts. A 65ft sunken yacht, for example, has been with us since May. It's a great feeling when all the staff pull together to complete a project on time.” SECOND BOATYARD Winter lay-ups are also at capacity, the company's gone from 30 in 2013 to 93 in 2018. “In five years, we've grown to a £1.7m turnover business with 37 staff and my sights are now on the

Scilly Isles and a second boatyard in Falmouth.” The Scilly Isles Boat Co will have a permanent presence on the island in February and in the longterm, employ five staff. So what's the secret of success? “Being genuine is the biggest asset you can have; be honest and transparent so you can manage people's expectations. Also, minimise the risk to your business, treat staff well and don't compromise quality by doing things cheaply. And let's keep those traditional skills alive, they have a place alongside technology.” Jonathan's the retiring chairman of British Marine SW and is saddened by the loss of the London Boat Show: “Nothing replaces seeing, feeling and experiencing a boat and while the virtual reality advocates will say goggles replace this, I beg to differ.” With expansion in the Scilly Isles, in his spare time, Jonathan's increasing his flying hours so he can get his pilot's licence back and he'd like to 'spend more time on boats'.
