SAFETY
More than 250,000 visitors from 106 countries visited this year's boot Düsseldorf, with organisers declaring it to be a great start to the new decade and the best show yet. With a focus on sustainability, the show saw a large emphasis on alternative drive systems, boat construction from renewable raw materials and international ocean protection projects. “This large proportion of international visitors shows that we are very well-prepared for the future with the boot concept,” explained boot director Petros Michelidakis. “Here in Düsseldorf - in the heart of landlocked North Rhine-Westphalia, we really have succeeded in creating the most important international platform for water sports. boot demonstrated convincingly this year just how impressive the industry's innovative skills are.” The event - with 1,900 exhibitors in 17 halls - encompassed

much networking for trade visitors together with a vast array of products and services plus sailing yachts, motor boats, dinghies, luxury yachts and inflatables. CEO of organisers Messe Düsseldorf, Werner Dornscheidt, summarised the nine-day show: “boot has developed into something far more than just a trade fair,” he said. “It is an event with huge innovative and economic significance, while representing passion for water sports to a unique extent as well. In the past few days, the trade fair has demonstrated the amazing appeal boot has all over the world.” The show achieved a satisfaction rate of 96% from visitors, with the Wave particularly popular with numerous world champions providing demonstrations.
NEW MD FOR BROOM BOATS Broom Boats has appointed Antony Howell as MD to lead the business in its next phase of business development. The Norfolk Broads business has previously focused on its popular Broom boat hire and its marina provides berths to all sizes of craft. The business will now turn attention on growing its boat repair and maintenance services. “We are extremely fortunate to be located on the Norfolk Broads in such a beautiful part of the country and to be able to offer fantastic opportunities for family holidays and leisure users to what has become a growing destination,” said Antony. “With the boat hire business steadily increasing it is now time to focus on developing the maintenance business and provide boat owners with a facility and a team to take care of their passion, which are their boats. This will be key for driving
future business growth. I'm passionate about this business and very much looking forward to working with the team and meeting valued customers.” Commenting on the appointment Martin Scott, chairman of Broom Boats, said: “We are delighted that Antony has joined Broom and look forward to working with him to expand the business and deliver the highest possible service to all our clients.” 8 Antony Howell has joined Broom Boats as MD

VIEWPOINT MARINE LOGISTICS COMPANY KATINA READ Editor DOUBLES CAPACITY ❘

So another major international exhibition has taken place with boot Düsseldorf certainly starting the new decade with a fantastic, growing event. Despite being landlocked, it’s clear boot Düsseldorf has now taken over in Europe and possibly worldwide as the largest (and best) watersports show. It’s clear that the Germans know how to put on a successful, growing event that mostly works both for exhibitors and visitors alike. The numbers speak for themselves - 250,000 visitors and 1,900 exhibitors and as organisers state: ‘a good boot has traditionally been an auspicious omen for the subsequent water sports season’. Mid-way through the show most exhibitors I spoke to were very happy with the sales and enquiries they had received, though some were unhappy with their new positions and lack of footfall. It’s clear boot is a show that is attracting ever increasing numbers of British visitors with more companies sending their sales representatives out to support their German distributors. And I heard very few comments about Brexit – who knows what is going to happen throughout this year but at least we all know now that we are leaving the EU. Maybe it won’t be as catastrophic as many have feared. SHOW APPEAL The Germans also know how to throw a good party - even if it was a bun fight at the end to retrieve coats and hats - and host successful networking events (that don’t run out of beer after half an hour), adding to the appeal of the show. As I write this comment, debates that started during the show have been continuing on social media. It seems clear that networking is something this industry needs – and thrives on. The phrase ‘stronger together’ is something that is often banded about with good reason. There are lessons to be learnt from the Germans. Networking with a drink in hand is definitely a relaxed way of doing things but when it’s with the same people, can it still be classed as networking? Does British Marine need to be more proactive when organising and promoting networking events – both in the UK and abroad - and open these up to non-members as well as members? Does someone else need to step in and organise events? The forthcoming BM expo taking place in Southampton could provide an opportunity to kickstart this. Or should most of our networking take place via social media? In an era where we’re told we should be embracing modern technology, is this the way forward? I’m sure this is a debate that will run for some time to come. In the meantime, congratulations to E. P. Barrus that is celebrating 100 years in the marine industry. The company was founded in the 1920 as a powerboat team and now distributes a large range of products. Here’s to another 100 years for Barrus.

He added: "In 2018 we started the restructuring of Eurowarehouse, investing in a new inventory system and expanding our capacities. In the next month Eurowarehouse will move into a bigger facility and double its capacity." BREXIT And he said the company is aiming to mitigate potential delays for UK businesses after Brexit. "Depending on the outcome of the trade deal negotiations between the UK and the EU, after Brexit has happened on 31st of January 2020, there could be a serious disruption in the way both sides do business," he said. "The different scenarios that are currently being
brought forward include a potential customs check on UK products sold to EU which would end free movement of goods. "Best case scenario would be a free trade agreement with no custom clearance at the borders. Worst case scenario would be leaving with no trade deal and defaulting to World Trade Organization rules, which would impose tariffs on trade between the UK and the EU." And he explained that anything but the best scenario will result in an increase of transport costs, an increase of transit times due to customs clearance and potentially disruption trade between UK and EU. "Eurowarehouse is constantly monitoring the developments surrounding the trade negotiations and adapting our services where needed. If the outcome is anything but the best scenario, we offer the possibility to minimise the disruption of your business with the EU."
SHAREHOLDER CASH INJECTION SOUGHT Princess Yachts is asking its shareholders to increase investment to support the company's growth plans. The luxury yacht manufacturer has seen profitable growth through 2018, increasing its revenue by 75% over three years and hitting record profitability. In 2019 Princess launched nine new models to renew and expand its product line with innovative models such as the X95. In a statement issued this month, the company said, “Together with our shareholders, we have reconfirmed our strategy and have embarked on the development of a new generation of products and a realignment of our production

A warehousing solution for marine companies is set to expand to a new facility and double its capacity in 2020 in part due to Brexit. Eurowarehouse, the sister company to IMDS, was established in 2008 and provides order processing, shipping, inventory, invoicing, logistics and finance and e-commerce services to marine companies across Europe. The warehouse is based in the Netherlands' as founder Ken Kemperman says this is a central location within the European market. "Thanks to the central location and excellent (road, rail and waterway) connections with other European countries, we can quickly transport products to the rest of Europe at an affordable price," said Ken. Boats Group has purchased Annonces du Bateau and all its assets from CarBoat Media. Boats Group is an online marketplace for boats and yachts and comprises the Boat Trader, YachtWorld, boats.com, Cosas De Barcos and iNautia brands. Annonces du Bateau is one of France's leading boat sales marketplaces. “France is an enormously important market in the global leisure marine industry, and the acquisition of Annonces du Bateau - a business with a long tradition of delivering digital excellence in France will accelerate our growth in Europe, commented Sam Fulton, chief executive of Boats Group. “We look forward to welcoming the customers of Annonces du Bateau and providing them with leading customer service, as well as an expanded range of products that are proven to help the industry sell more boats."
Boats Group says it will now substantially invest in Annonces du Bateau, starting with a new platform that will debut later this year.
For the boating industry professionals who currently use Annonces du Bateau, the acquisition will provide new access to the
international marketplace. “We are very pleased to announce this agreement with Boats Group, said Francois Couffy, chief executive of CarBoat Media. “We are confident that our customers will experience best-in-class service and benefit from the technology investments and expanded market opportunities that Boats Group offers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
RACEIX LAUNCHES CHART-PLOTTER OS Irish marine technology company, Raceix, has developed a new operating system for chart-plotters, devised in association with development partner, Beneteau. Only 15% of oceans are currently mapped with some
data more than 50 years old. The additional data which BoatingOS will unlock will be a 'game- changer' for pleasure boaters, says Vicki O'Donnell, head of marine data at Raceix. Chief technology officer, Sam Santi, added: "The
platform uses AI and machine learning to improve data from multiple sources, including user-generated data. "The dynamic system is designed to continuously evolve and improve and this is done without any input needed from the boater."

BRIEFS WMS appointed Wardle Marine Services has been awarded UK distribution rights to High and Dry Boatlifts following demand for larger boatlifts. The lifts work by use of a ‘foolproof’ design using siphoning and flooding of the floatation bins, with a simple addition to keep the boat centred during launch and recovery. Wardle Marine will continue selling its Boatlift, Flexiport and Jetports.
Simrad chosen BRABUS Marine has chosen Simrad marine electronics brand for its new BRABUS Shadow 900. The boat’s bridge will incorporate four Simrad information display screens, dual 12in and dual 9in, designed to provide a ‘glass bridge’ feel similar to that found on superyachts. While a ‘Loop P’ digital switching system on an additional 7in display, will deliver an integrated boating experience.

LASER TRANSFORMS UNDERWATER IMAGING An EU maritime study has identified a 'blue-light' laser with the ability to transform underwater range-finding, imaging and communication across the maritime industry. Scientists working on the €1m KETmaritime project, which is in part run by Ireland's national centre for marine and renewable energy, MaREI and the UK's Marine South East, have released a report on the potential of 'Photonic Marine Applications'. It highlights new boundaries broken in marine laser development, enhancing the detection of underwater objects including submarines and archaeological sites. The study of 'photonics' seeks to generate, control and detect photons - an elementary particle of light

Philippe Briand has unveiled the latest sailing yacht concept to come from his London-based design studio - the 60m SY200. The motivation behind the sloop is to create a yacht that discharges zero emissions when travelling from port to port. “We want to work alongside owners to create the perfect renewable energy machine, using only wind, water and solar energy to run the yacht and provide an exceptional experience of peace on board and exploration of the sea,” explained Philippe. “Environmental sustainability will become the reason to push the boundaries of technology and efficiency in superyachting."
“We are always incredibly proud to host such a plethora of magnificent motor yacht brands over this period,” said Graham Bristowe, Swanwick Marina's general manager. “I think the show's attraction and its natural expansion year on year is because the show remains unique and focussed on motor boats of all types." You probably now have your marketing budget for 2020 confirmed, but have you fully decided how to spend it? What activities will provide the best return on investment? Which actions will help you reach your goals? We all think about advertising, exhibitions and social media, but what about sponsorships? A carefully chosen and well negotiated sponsorship will successfully span multiple promotional channels and combined with a clear purpose and message, will provide excellent value. 1. Consider your marketing objectives and search for sponsorship opportunities which reach your target market. 2. Meet the organisers and discuss where the event has come from, what the future ambitions are and develop an understanding of the culture. 3. Don't be afraid to bring your own ideas to the table and seek to customise the features and benefits to optimise the deal for both sides. 4. Allocate time to work on the sponsorship. Never just pay the money and sit back. Engagement takes effort but will pay off significantly. 5. Think about how you can go beyond straightforward branding to connect with your audience before, during and after the event. Should you have a physical presence? Can you provide attendees with a discount? How can you integrate the sponsorship into your promotions? 6. Think about PR and how you publicise your sponsorship. Remember that there is a story to tell and the more involved you get, the more interesting it will become.

JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates 2019 statistics regarding the US superyacht market are not yet available so Boating Business spoke to Kitty McGowan, president, US Superyacht Association. Here are her thoughts on 2019: “The US superyacht market continued to be very strong in 2019 with even more yachts over 80ft at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, (137) than there were at the Monaco Yacht Show (102)— showcasing the US as a significant destination for yacht sales. “In addition, the US continues to be a strong destination for refit, with many new facilities being brought online to be able to accommodate vessels of all sizes, despite growing competition developing in Europe. “One significant trend that continued and expanded in 2019 is the increase in the number of superyachts heading West. The West Coast saw another robust season despite the limited infrastructure in the region.” The NMMA's US Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract 2006 2018 shows that in 2018 there were 1,806 documented vessels in the 76ft - 100ft category up from 1,700 in 2017 and 179 documented vessels larger than 100ft up from 172 in 2017. These numbers do not include vessels documented offshore. Perhaps the biggest issue the superyacht segment currently faces going forward is the imminent IMO’s Selective Catalytic Reduction emissions mandate scheduled to take place on January 1, 2021.

THEPERSONBEHINDTHEFACE Interview by Alice Driscoll
RAY BADMINTON
How I got into this industry... Doing my RYA Yachtmaster in 2000 the instructor showed me some marine navigation software written by his brother. Having worked for Microsoft in the past, I saw its potential and started up EVO distribution developing its use on land, air and sea. In 2015 we merged with our distributor SMG and I became group MD from founder Chris Northmore who is now chairman. Best advice I've ever received... Dress for the job you want not the one you have.” I prefer staff to be smart not look as if just off the beach. I'm not “suited and booted” often now, but always have on a decent shirt and smart pair of chinos. You should really read... “Your text messages”...or at least that's what my wife tells me! I do just about keep up with email and oldfashioned texts, but don't expect a prompt reply on all my other accounts: LinkedIn, Facebook, Messenger, Skype, WhatsApp...
One thing the industry needs less of is... Lack of professionalism and poor attention to detail. For some the marine industry is a lifestyle choice and it's certainly more relaxed than my previous roles in IT mega corporations. That doesn't mean that it's acceptable to be slack when it comes to responding to sales enquires or handling customer service. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... “Let's meet for a catch up'. Happy to meet and socialise for lunch or in the pub, but if it's for business then keep it short, productive and with a clear objective. Best place I've been... I've been lucky to travel a fair amount with work and play over the years but the best places have always been more about who I'm with rather than the place itself...so choose your travel companions wisely and wherever you end up could be the best place ever. Don't worry about... Brexit. By the time you read this it may (or more likely, may not) have happened. Either way the UK will continue to be at the forefront of the global marine Industry.
Favourite meal...I'm not a fussy eater but do enjoy well cooked food especially if it ends with cheese and a decent bottle of port...so Christmas dinner with the family is always something to look forward too. One thing I couldn't live without... Tech. My father was one of the very first computer salesman so I've been playing with technology since the equivalent power of your smartphone required a computer the size of SMG's warehouse! It's amazing seeing my seven year-old girls take for granted the things which were science fiction when I was their age. How I cope with stress... I build in down time and immerse myself in something that takes all my attention... most likely some solitude on a bike ride or a long walk with the dog in the forest and off the beaten track. Something about you that people might be surprised by... I've always got on well with numbers and formulae. I like nothing better than analysing product or sales data in Excel...oh, and I can still recite Pi to many digits 3.14159265358... Ray Badminton is MD at SM Group

In Richard Hadida, Oyster now has an owner with the resources to take the business forward.

The company will be showing items from Calypso's range at this year's RYA Dinghy Show including a small yacht solution that links directly to NMEA wind speed and direction displays, plus a solar-powered portable option with Calypso's Sailing Anemotracker App which delivers live wind speed and direction data without the need for cables. Also on show will be Richard Paul Russell's Weatherfile wind and weather monitoring equipment.
Transfluid has obtained two DNV GL Type approvals - for its marine parallel hybrid modules and LiFePO4 battery banks. The battery typeapproval also includes the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) extension with its stricter list of requirements. The absence of carbon and graphite avoids profoundly destructive ‘thermal runaway’ required to obtain DNV GL and NMA approvals. Parallel hybrid technology allows redundancy on board. Propulsion comes from an internal combustion engine (ICE) or electric motor. Should an electrical blackout occur, the ICE will operate the propulsion system and if the ICE fails, the electric motor serves as a second means of power.
Consultation British Marine and the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities have jointly launched a consultation on proposed changes to the Hire Boat Code. The proposal of changes to the Code considers the advances in boat design, regulation and operation which have occurred since the first Code was published in 2008. The revised code is intended to be mandatory and may result in ‘significant’ costs for businesses. Proposed changes include responsibilities for hire boat operators, hirers and hire boat licensing authorities of sailing boats over 6m LOA and powered boats of all lengths, as well as amendments to key technical standards. The consultation period will close on March 9 2020.

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Journalist
FAMILIES IN BUSINESS DISPUTE What happens if you run a business with family? Is trouble guaranteed or will commercial harmony follow. David Emanuel, chairman and a corporate law partner at VWV, thinks that every family business dispute is different, but there are common themes. The most frequent tend to involve a lack of succession planning which leaves the next generation feeling frustrated; differences over strategic direction; and different attitudes across generations on ownership. But other issues can drive home a wedge and some of them, believes Philippa Dempster, managing partner of Freeths, may be very trivial but can fester. And money is often the root cause. She says “remuneration can often lead to a dispute if one family member feels that they are not being financially rewarded as well as another, or if others are not pulling their weight but are remunerated the same as those taking on key roles.” On top of this is what happens when one family member feels that they are not being included in decision making. DEALING WITH THE ISSUES As any good lawyer knows, documentation is key. For
be open and transparent with one another” and “discussing company finances, business initiatives, staff issues.”
David, this could include an obligation in a shareholder's agreement with mediation to resolve disputes. Phillipa agrees, stating that alternative means of dispute resolution is always preferable “because litigation can be expensive and time consuming and is a distraction.” This point is taken further by David; he suggests that if the family doesn't want to bear the cost of mediation that an alternative “is an independent, respected, family-related figure.” But before embarking on mediation, Philippa emphasises that it's important for the parties to know what their legal position is. She believes that
by knowing, for example, “that a court may not agree with a party's position from a legal perspective they will go to mediation with an open mind.” RISK MANAGEMENT Families can also lower the risk of trouble through a charter which sets out the fundamental principles for the business and a shareholder's agreement that details ownership, management rights and responsibilities. For David, these important governance documents can, he says, “help business and family relationships, and give confidence to face future challenges.” Philippa thinks a formal
business plan should be written “so that the parties have some structure and each party is aware of the direction that is proposed for the business. Meetings should always be minuted to avoid misunderstandings down the line and if possible, an independent third-party present.” Both Philippa and David think that regular communication is critical. David advocates a “forum for family members to meet, away from home, to discuss family business issues in the context of their respective roles, whether as family member, employee, or shareholder.” Dempster recommends openness where “parties can
IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE TOO If agreement on business decisions cannot be reached then it is inevitable that family members may have to exit the business, or the business wound up. Here, says Philippa, “the business will need to be valued so that the leaving party can either be bought out by the remaining parties or the company buys back the shares at value.” Of course, business isn't necessarily about the current generation, it also concerns the future. Bringing in new family members at an early age can help them feel that the business is very much part of the family. TO CONCLUDE So, while blood may be the strongest bond, it doesn't guarantee success. The reality is that without a firm basis for good communications, an understanding how businesses are run, and ideally, good documentation, the seeds of destruction will be sown. But each to their own.
DRAFT DIRECTIVE AGREEMENT REACHED Draft directive to allow EU consumers to defend their rights collectively The Council of the European Union has adopted conclusions on the deepening of the capital markets union, writes Adam Bernstein. The Council of the European Union has reached an agreement on a draft directive for representative actions for the protection of the collective interests of consumers against infringements of union law.

The council has stated that consumers will be able to defend their rights collectively and more efficiently. The directive will take effect in all member states and will allow qualified entities to see injunctions and redress measures including compensation. New EU VAT rules for online marketplaces The amending directive and regulation containing detailed rules for creation of the VAT one-stop-shop and
making online marketplaces responsible for collecting VAT on goods sold on their platforms to EU consumers, were published in the EU official journal in December. These rules will introduce special provisions for large online marketplaces, such that marketplaces will be deemed for VAT purposes to be the suppliers of goods up to a value of €150 sold to customers in the EU by nonEU companies using their platforms and will have to collect certain information
and pay the VAT on these sales; and turn VAT MOSS into a one-stop-shop, extending it to all types of services as well as to intra-community distance sales of goods and distance sales of goods from non-EU countries. The new rules will apply from 1 January 2021. EU council aims to enhance access to finance for EU businesses. The conclusions set out five main objectives including enhancing access
to finance for EU businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises, and the removal of structural and legal barriers for increased cross border capital flows. Other objectives include providing incentive and remove obstacles for wellinformed retail savers to invest; supporting the transition to sustainable economies; embracing technological progress and digitalisation and strengthening global competitiveness.

The team at Shamrock Quay in Southampton, part of the MDL Marinas Group, has saved three lives since it installed a new Reach and Rescue telescopic rescue pole. According to official statistics compiled by the National Water Safety Forum in its Annual Fatal Incident Report, there were 13 incidents of accidental drowning that occurred in either a marina, harbour, dock or port in 2018. The new rescue pole at Shamrock Quay was called into action almost immediately. “We have used the equipment on three occasions to successfully recover persons who have accidentally fallen in the water,” said marina supervisor, Barry Radband. “The pole has proved invaluable on every occasion allowing us to

QUICK AND ACCURATE The telescopic rescue pole enables an individual to conduct a quick, accurate rescue without needing to get into the water themselves. Barry attributes the pole's effectiveness to its 'robust design' that is 'lightweight to use'. The pole he deployed in the successful rescues featured a body hook tool attachment, allowing him
to keep the casualty from sinking by hooking beneath their body before pulling them back to dry land. MDL Marinas Group has now equipped every marina manager at each of its 20 marinas across the UK and Europe with the system and Quay Marinas Bangor Marina has also installed the pole inside its 'Emergency Point' water rescue system.

CORE PROVIDES PEACE OF MIND OLAS Core is a small, portable, wireless man overboard alarm system from Exposure Lights for boats up to 50ft long and up to 15 crew. In the event of a man overboard incident, the system will trigger an 85decibel emergency alert within four seconds. Each crewmember wears an OLAS transmitter and using wireless technology, the product will create a virtual lifeline between them and the vessel by a continuous wireless signal. The Core is a small, portable hub that can be placed anywhere on the boat. “Losing a crew member overboard is every sailor's worst nightmare,” said Tom Harrop, product manager at Exposure Lights. “OLAS Core gives skippers of larger boats with a large crew, complete confidence that in the event of a MOB incident, the entire crew are alerted immediately and can take immediate recovery actions.” The portable unit is powered by a five-volt USB supply allowing it to be transferred between vessels. As well as the alarm, a high -power emergency red light displays a visual alert. It also connects with the OLAS mobile app, which includes screens to connect, monitor and label the connected tags. The Core range can be increased for larger vessels up to 80ft using the OLAS Extender and it can also be set to solo mode sending an SMS message with the location and time of incident to the wearer's emergency number.

Ocean Safety has launched a new range option for its Jon Buoy man overboard collection, the Jon Buoy Glo Lite. Glo Lite uses retroreflective technology that enhances the visibility of the hi-vis fabric, making it highly reflective and increasing perception during dark conditions. The new range is available as an addition to the current standard Jon Buoy range. The company has also developed a new container for its Ocean ISO Liferaft, reducing weight and making the raft easier to handle. The company has seen an increase in both cruisers and racers carrying liferafts with more owners investing in safety products. “Leisure end user awareness has really increased, with a greater understanding of the importance of having a raft,” said Alistair Hackett, Ocean Safety MD. The container design evolution is developed from customer feedback, industry expertise and research and incorporates built-in handles. The removal of a rubber gasket featured in the

Despite undeniable advances in technology, the importance of carrying reliable, powerful and universally recognised visual emergency signalling on board is unequivocal, says Chris Feibusch. Advances in technology mean that today's electronic emergency devices offer ever more efficient and technical signalling and location accuracy, says the director of global marketing and communications for WesCom Signal and Rescue. However, he points out there is yet to be a single device that can replace the specific function of the of marine pyrotechnics - the carriage of which is mandatory on all commercial
vessels around the world and has been for more 100 years. “It's alarming that there is an increase in conflicting, contentious and ultimately dangerous advice from otherwise respected organisations discouraging the use and carriage of
pyrotechnics,” said Chris. “It is important to acknowledge the advances in technology, but is imperative that everyone, whether a recreational watercraft user or commercial vessel operator, understands that all safety
equipment is designed to be complementary. One type of safety device is not a substitute for another.” And he points out that pyrotechnic flares are powerful, self-contained devices that can emit heat, smoke and light signals from the surface of the water to high in the air, without need for batteries, electrical source or third-party input. They are waterproof, submersible, resilient and universally recognised around the world and do not require any equipment to receive alerts or rely on complex technology to use or receive.

SOLAS approved lighting system, rain water collection and the option of three survival equipment packs.
The Ocean ISO liferaft is also available in a valise option as well as in a carbon Ultralite version.
SPINLOCK CONTINUES DEVELOPMENT WORK Spinlock has developed a top-of-the-range automatic inflating lifejacket harness the Deckvest 6D. The jacket introduces a new optional feature; a quick-release harness release system, which draws on development work undertaken by the company for the Volvo Ocean Race.
“In our opinion, compared to using a cutter, this is quicker, more convenient and potentially lifesaving,” says Oliver Cook, marketing manager at Spinlock's UK distributor Marathon Leisure. “This feature might not be relevant to all users, but it shows the design, innovation and attention to detail Spinlock gives to developing its pioneering jackets.” The system is designed to ensure a simple release from a safety line even when fully
loaded. A soft loop attachment point for the safety line is on the front of the life jacket and the activation handle is located immediately behind. Additional features include a choice of 170N and 275N buoyancy, a design with easy adjustment and an enhanced shoulder fit system. The new sprayhood design has a large clear structured visor, the jacket is MOB1 AIS compatible and it comes with a five-year warranty.

USERS KNOW HELP IS ON THE WAY Orolia has launched its latest safety technology, the FastFind ReturnLink PLB with Return Link System (RLS) capabilities. The product will transmit a user's unique ID and Galileo Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) location via the global network of Cospas Sarsat search and rescue satellites. Galileo's Return Link Service is then used to transmit a return signal back to the user's device to confirm the alert has been received and location has been detected. The PLB will display a blue light to inform the user that search and rescue organisations are aware of their situation and location and that they are not alone. It builds on work carried out with the European GNSS Agency on the Galileo satellite system developing next-generation search and rescue (SAR) distress beacons. The company has also previously developed GNSS enabled PLBs. “The FastFind ReturnLink PLB is Orolia Maritime's most advanced search and rescue beacon to date,” said Chris Loizou, VP of maritime at Orolia. “The psychological impact of knowing that help is on the way cannot be underestimated and this PLB will provide invaluable peace of mind for those in distress.” The unit has a five-year battery life and is waterproof to 10m.

BELOW DECKS DIVERSIFIES ITS RANGE 8 The FGHF hatch provides a smooth transition between hatch and deck
LATEST GENERATION FLUSH HATCHES FROM VETUS The FGHF range of flush hatches from Vetus promises a new standard for this product group. Key features include the use of 12mm thick 'dark smoke' acrylic, polished and anodised high-grade aluminium frames and ergonomic and precisionengineered handles. Maintenance-free, the FGHF hatches are suitable for category A, area II positions thanks to the VETUS clamps that secure the closed hatches tightly. The design is unashamedly modern and the meticulously engineered construction ensures a flush fitting into the deck that delivers a smooth transition between hatch and deck. The FGHF series distinguishes itself from the FGH series by having flush mounted handles, stays and hinges in the acrylic so nothing protrudes. The flat surface ensures no lines can get caught. The larger size hatches are also equipped with a socket in the handle, so they can be opened from the outside with the help of a winch handle. “The square hatches are available in four sizes, from a 260mm along each side version up to 700mm,” explained Vetus's Stephen Baker. “As well as making them easy to clean the flush design reduces wind noise and the polished and anodized aluminium frames are stylish and engineered for cut-outs with a corner radius of 43mm.”

A NEW ERA FOR ONBOARD LIGHTING
Lumishore has launched what it claims is the world's first marine-grade fully colour-tunable DC smart interior/exterior lighting system. What the Lux lighting collection offers boat owners is full spectrum, CRGBW, colour-tunable and white temperature tunable lighting all in the same DC fixture for
8 Lumishore’s LUX lighting provides an almost infinite combination of hues
an unlimited combination of colours and intensity. The centrally controlled nature of LUX delivers colour consistency throughout an entire vessel for a balanced and unified look. Simple to set up and use, owners can control the lights
by zone and create lighting scenes to match any mood. The LUX Lighting system offers strip, neon flex, down and courtesy fixtures. Each has five-channel CRGBW (cold-white/red/green/ blue/warm-white) LEDs. The benefit of LEDs with cold and warm white over RGB/RGBW is that they produce the highest CRI (colour rendition index). By integrating these LEDs directly into the fixture, Lumishore says its lights are able to produce an almost infinite combination of hues, saturation and temperature, which has never been done before in a DC-powered LED light. The controls are also designed to be straightforward, with a simple-to-use palette wheel for colour selection and a horizontal slide bar for quick adjustments to lighting intensity and white balance in each RGB colour. Lighting can also be managed across multiple zones using optional pre-sets to create different moods and effects.

AQUAFAX STAFF INCREASE THEIR KNOWLEDGE
In the never-ending search for fuel economy and performance, reducing the weight of a boat is a key factor. One of the latest materials that is contributing to this goal is Thermhex from Sheffieldbased Panel Systems. Available as sandwich panels in a range of standard specifications they use polypropylene honeycomb to deliver weight savings of up to 85% compared with materials such as plywood and can be used structurally as well as for internal fixtures. The material is ideal for everything from doors, cockpit bottoms, internal fittings, furniture and furniture components to sound abatement, the reinforcement of decks and decking panels as well as for structural or decorative bulkheads. It can also make a boat safer - Panel Systems states that thanks to its construction, when used as a core material, the product will stop a split within the structure of the boat from extending further. Thermhex can be used for most types of leisure boat, from small sailing cruisers to state-of-the-art superyachts, giving owners the reassurance of strength and durability in addition to significant weight savings and reduced fuel consumption. It is resistant to chemicals and moisture and is 100% recyclable.

NEW ANTI-SIPHON LOOP FROM ASAP
8 ASAP Supplies has helped develop a corrosion resistant anti-siphon loop
ASAP Supplies has worked with Maestrini and assisted the manufacturer to develop a corrosion resistant anti-siphon loop. The resulting DZR antisiphon loops are made from a corrosive resistant brass body with a rubber check ball, designed to give users peace of mind for systems that are installed below the waterline and in contact with saltwater. “An anti-siphon unit is an extremely important
part of a plumbing system,” explained Rhiannon Read, marketing and customer support for ASAP. “Their use is recommended in installations such as 'below the waterline' applications of engines with wet exhausts, toilet systems and pumping systems to name but a few.” The product allows water to flow only one way in the intended direction; should the flow reverse,
the vacuum created will operate the anti-siphon valve allowing air to enter the line, breaking the siphoning effect. The loops can be bought as a complete kit or individual components, allowing users to custom make to individual requirements. Once assembled, the kit provides an anti-siphon device to suit 19, 25 and 32mm hose lines, all with a 10mm vent hose.

Having spent his formative years and much of his career sailing yachts and running the Global Challenge yacht races, Alistair Hackett, feels his experiences have wellequipped him for his role as MD of Ocean Safety. “To work in our sector properly I believe you should have spent time on the water and really know and feel what it's like to be out at sea. If you don't have the experience, you can't explain how things really work and will not understand how a piece of equipment works in reality, on a vessel, when you're cold, tired, hungry and wet.” Alistair has sailed all his life. He learnt on the River Trent in Nottingham with his father and such was their passion for sailing, his parents bought a 22ft yacht before a house when relocating to Plymouth. The move, when Alistair was 11, placed him firmly in the yacht racing scene. MAXI YACHT “At 16 I worked the summer with Mitsibushi Marine. The firm was building a maxi yacht for the Whitbread Race which ended up as 'Drum' for Duran Duran singer, Simon Le Bon. After leaving school at 18, I spent two years working on yacht charters in the Mediterranean and completed a couple of Swan World Championships.” Alistair also spent two seasons, primarily in France, on the Euro multi-hull circuit with Formula 40s. A chance meeting with multi-hull expert, Andrew Roberts, prompted his next career move. “Andrew suggested I join the team involved with the 1992 British Steel Challenge Yacht Race in Cornwall; at the time they were building 10 67ft steel yachts to sail around the world, the wrong way, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Chay Blyth completing this amazing feat.”

It was the first customer fee-paying global race and the only one heading westwards. “I worked with training skipper, Pete Goss and together with four colleagues, got ten yachts around the world, crewed by an amazing group of people who were not yachtsmen. We empowered ordinary people to do the most extraordinary things.” TITLE SPONSOR The Challenge ran again, as the BT Global Challenge, with 14 boats in 1996 and 2000 and in 2004 with 12 72ft yachts. “By 2004 we'd lost our title sponsor so the business struggled when the boats returned in 2005.” Their attention instead focused on supporting Dee Caffari, who became the first women in 2005/06 to sail singlehanded around the world against the currents. Redundancy loomed in May 2006, but having worked with so many Challenge suppliers, Alistair was quickly offered a general manager
role by the then-owners of Ocean Safety. “My ten years in this role dovetailed well with my Challenge focus that safety comes first. I knew the OS products and had the sailing experience.” Alistair developed safety packages for the Volvo Ocean Race teams which expanded into bespoke sea survival training courses. “This enabled me to work with some of the world's topend yachtsmen and women.” Over 60% of Ocean Safety's business is with commercial shipping firms and the Ministry of Defence, yet Alistair says the key influencers are in the leisure sector, who drive demand for lightweight safety solutions. ALLIANZ MARINE In 2014 OS became part of the 3Si Group and in 2018, was acquired by Allianz Marine, when Alistair was appointed managing director. AM is one of Europe's largest marine manufacture, design, product sales and servicing
businesses with operations in France, Germany and Italy and a subsidiary, similar to OS, in Florida. With more than 80 staff and offices in Plymouth, Glasgow and Aberdeen, Alistair says the plan is to work closely with AM's companies to develop products and share expertise in the leisure/commercial markets. “Moving forward, where regulations permit, we'll integrate more technology into solutions, so for example, a life jacket will also have personal 'man overboard' equipment fitted. We're also keen to increase peoples' understanding of how the products work and when they will need to use them.” OS lectures to the World Cruising Club, encouraging attendees to consider their response to certain situations and how to organise the crew. “We cover areas people don't like to think about.” RENTAL The firm plans to extend the servicing side of its business

and increase life raft rental. “Demand for hire continues to rise - in 2018 we had 34 life rafts in our hire fleet, now we have 900.” When it comes to mentors, Alistair cites Andrew Roberts: “He taught me more about the water, what yachts require and how to manage them” and OS partner, Richard Besse. “I learnt so much from him about what's required to run a business.” Career highs are the safe return of every Global Challenge crew and being offered the md position. An inevitable regret is not sailing around the world. “Having spent so many years getting people ready to do this, I wish I'd done it myself.” These days Alistair spends more time in the water than on it, swimming in a pool every morning. And with a role requiring international travel, he's content to spend time with wife Sally and children, Amelia and Clara,

Line manager to an engineering team of 17 personnel, Robin is responsible for military and specialist engineering, commercial application engineering and the design services group. “Eberspächer already has great capability and competence in the engineering teams and developing my own technical skill sets in the Eberspächer technology and solutions is going to be my biggest challenge in the short-term,” he said. “My approach is likely to be slightly different to that of my predecessor and I aim to develop the engineering team so it provides the skills and competencies required to develop and expand the business.”
