DÜSSELDORF PREVIEW

The All-Wales Boat Show is to have a new home and a new name for 2019. The event - renamed the All-Wales Boat and Leisure Show - will take place at the Anglesey Showground from May 20 to June 1. Organiser, Davina Carey-Evans, says Anglesey is the perfect setting. “The All-Wales Boat Show has evolved and grown and the 2019 event will also include a strong leisure element,” she said. “Moving the show to Anglesey showground will hopefully be a catalyst for our plan to turn the island into a major events hub.” She added: “The show will connect together industry leaders in boat and leisure products and services across Wales, with not only watersport and boating enthusiasts but all those that have a passion for the great outdoors.

8 The new All-Wales Boat and Leisure Show will take place at the Anglesey Showground

“The level of interest from the marine sector is unprecedented for the next event, with over 17 of the bestknown brands already signed up.” The event is aimed at middle of the market boating enthusiasts plus kayakers, surfers, wakeboarders and scuba divers rather than high-end multi-millionaire yachtsmen, said Davina. And she pointed out that the marine sector is a growth area in Wales with boating generating an annual tourism spend of £282m. The All-Wales Boat Show has previously taken place in Conwy and Pwllheli.

AXEL JOHNSON ENTERS THE UK MARKET Swedish based Axel Johnson International's Industrial Solutions business group has acquired Marindus Group Limited (MGL). The UK-based company comprises Marine and Industrial Transmissions and AtZ Marine Technologies. “This is a landmark development for both companies as it will enable true potential to be realised,” said Jerry Hill, MGL chairman. “We have laid excellent foundations and built a best-inclass team that will continue to flourish and gain under the ownership of Axel Johnson International.”

Jan Brattberg, head of driveline solutions platform for MGL, added:“The acquisition expands our geographical reach in Europe, while simultaneously growing our commitment to a number of leading driveline and marine application brands.” Headquartered in Kent, MGL has an annual turnover of approximately £9m and employs more than 50 members of staff. The company was founded in 1974 as the first Twin Disc distributor in the UK. MIT is the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for Transfluid, Rubber Design and Quincy. VIEWPOINT GAMER MOVES INTO MARINE KATINA READ ❘ Editor kread@boatingbusiness.com

WORLD AT DÜSSELDORF

There was an optimistic feel to the UK’s boating industry towards the end of 2018 however, with Brexit looming ever closer and the trade war with China and the US showing no signs of ending, 2019 may be slightly more rocky. For many of us this was our first January with no London Boat Show and my inbox has continued to receive comments from would-be exhibitors worrying about the lack of the show. For me it was a strange feeling, not getting ready to head up to London to catch up with the latest news and gossip. For those who would have exhibited, there was none of the inevitable last-minute rush before Christmas to get stands organised and products sorted. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the winter pans out with the void in turnover and activity. As most will admit, the show was lacking but it was still a way for retailers to get in front of their audience at the start of the year. It does continue to bring home the need for good events to get in front of the average boater.

As most will admit, the show was lacking but it was still a way for retailers to get in front of their audience at the start of the year Instead, many are gearing up for Dus̈seldorf – let’s hope this show fills the abyss for British companies and the supply chain. I was also interested to see that the All-Wales Boat Show has announced it is expanding and concentrating on what organisers call the middle of the boating market rather than the top end. This formula seems to be working with brands signing up to show their products. In the US, the market continues to expand, with MarineMax, the nation’s largest recreational boat and yacht retailer seeing improved sales. Can the UK’s market continue to follow suit? Perhaps if our politicians stop their in-fighting and bickering and get on with their job, we could all move forward. On a brighter note, I’ve now been editor of Boating Business for two years and have to say it’s been great getting to know a lot of you. Thanks for your support, please do keep in touch and drop me a line or give me a call to let me know your news. Here’s to a prosperous 2019 for everyone.

Can the UK’s market continue to prosper?

Düsseldorf Boat Show will see the launch of new British technology company Arksen. Owner Jasper Smith is better known for his work in the gaming industry but has now set his sights on the maritime world with a plan to develop and build semi-

autonomous, hybrid explorer vessels. He will bring on board Alex Thomson Racing's former MD, Tanya Brookfield as executive director. AN UNTAPPED MARKET “Having built a lot of businesses over the last

30 years and been lucky enough to have combined this with taking time out to embark on some great sailing and climbing adventures, I was surprised at how undeveloped the explorer yacht market really was,” explained Jasper. “I like the idea of creating a great tool for explorers and adventurers alike and one that could be used for leisure, research or commercial purposes. I also wanted to ensure these vessels were built in the UK and that we focused on reinvesting into the British marine industry.” ISLE OF WIGHT PARTNERSHIP After a year of planning, Arksen has announced a key milestone: a partnership with high-speed craft and aluminium ship builder Wight Shipyard, based on the Isle of Wight. “The Isle of Wight builds the finest aluminium vessels in the world and this explorer yacht range fits perfectly alongside our high-speed ferry building operation,” said shipyard chief executive, Peter Morton. Arksen will also work with naval architects Humphreys Yacht Design and interior designers, Design Unlimited.

MARKETING KATE O’SULLIVAN is MD at ADPR As we ease ourselves into 2019, here are some of the key marketing trends. 1. 'Omnichannel' communications create a seamless and consistent customer experience, whatever channel is used. 2. Responsive websites are old news; for 2019 it's all about greater speed (thanks to Google's Speed Update) and enhanced personalisation. 3. Facebook and Twitter's slow declines continue. Instagram's advertising revenue increases in-line with greater usage and more advertising options. LinkedIn is expected to grow. 4. Content marketing is a key part in any business's strategy. Businesses need to create super niche content relevant to their customers. Businesses may need to pay to share their content to new audiences through promoted social posts and search advertising. 5. Video advertising continues to grow with revenues overtaking display advertising for the first time in 2018. 6. As artificial intelligence and machine learning continue to evolve, the future of lead generation lies in marketing automation. HubSpot already offers predictive lead scoring (how likely a lead is to convert based on behaviour on your website, social channels and emails). 7. The decline of traditional media means the continued explosion of influencer marketing. Finding the right ambassadors for your brand is critical. Similarly, longform sponsored content (native advertising) will become a core part of marketing communications as publishers seek new revenue opportunities.

ALEXIS EYRE

How I got into this industry... I quit working in the London media world and headed to Australia for eight months. While temping in Sydney, I did my Day Skipper and moved to the Whitsundays, as a hostess on backpacker boats. That inspired me to return to the UK and join the marine industry. Nothing compares to getting up at six am, jumping off the boat and swimming in the Great Barrier Reef! That inspired me to return to the UK and join the marine industry. I do miss the heat though... Best advice I've ever received... Live life. Don't get swallowed up in the past or the future just enjoy the present. As Hunter S. Thompson put it: 'Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting “Holy shit...what a ride!”

You should really read... From Strength To Strength: An Autobiography by Sara Henderson. A truly inspirational, heart-warming book about how a lady and her family rebuild their lives in the middle of the Australian Outback. One thing the industry needs less of is... Underinvesting in marketing. We're on a global playing field, and marine companies often lag behind on the marketing front. We need to think further afield, competing on the same creative and technical level as competitors in other industries. Motoring, outdoor clothing, golf - there's so much competition for customer's hard-earned cash.

I think the Cook Islands are just magical. Don't worry about... The British weather. As long as you're dressed for it, it should never bother you. Favourite meal... A hard question but I reckon nothing beats a local Fruit de Mer. How I cope with stress... I used to be horrendous at coping with stress, but now I grab some fresh air, take a walk and ask myself: 'What's the worst that could happen?' Just removing yourself from a high-stress situation, even for a few minutes, changes your perspective.

Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... “Teamwork makes the dream work”. Even reading it makes me shudder

Something about you that people might be surprised by... I worked as a zookeeper in Uganda for one summer during University.

Best place I've been... There's so many gorgeous places to choose from,

BUSINESSMATTERS HELEN THORNLEY: Technical Officer

DRESSING FOR THE OCCASION There are many reasons why employers want to give staff a uniform. But no matter what the thinking, the provision of a uniform carries cost which, if HMRC's rules are followed, can be offset against the business's tax bill. The garments should carry a conspicuous badge or logo which should be permanently attached in order to qualify as a uniform. If it is removable, then there is a real risk that HMRC will argue that the garment is not really a uniform. Items of clothing are considered individually by HMRC. If an employer supplies a branded top and ordinary trousers, while it might be what the employer considers the overall 'uniform', from HMRC's perspective only the top will qualify for tax purposes. The provision of the trousers would create a benefit in kind on which

tax is payable by the employee. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Other items that employers might commonly supply to employees could include protective clothing such as gloves, helmets and goggles.

Here an employer can claim full tax relief for the cost where genuine protective clothing is needed and there is no taxable benefit to the employee. If the item has been accepted as a uniform or protective clothing, then it

Here an employer can claim full tax relief for the cost where genuine protective clothing is needed and there is no taxable benefit to the employee follows that the employer can claim tax relief for the costs of maintaining and or cleaning these items; this will not create a benefit in kind for the employee. However, where an employer provides nonexempt items then there may be tax consequences. These depend on whether or not the employer has loaned the employee the items or given them.

BENEFIT If the employer gives the employee clothing that they can keep, then the employer must report this on a P11D as a benefit. The amount to report will be the higher of the initial cost of the clothing to the employer or the value of the clothing when it is given. The employee will pay tax on the benefit and the employer will pay Class 1A

National Insurance. If the employer loans the employee clothing, then the benefit is assessed on the higher of 20% of the market value of the clothing or the annual rental paid for the clothing. Again, this would go on a P11D and Class 1A National Insurance should be paid by the employer. TAX RELIEF If an employee is required to supply their own uniform, or they have to buy branded items of clothing from the employer to wear, they will be entitled to claim tax relief for the cost of the uniform. Again, this relief applies strictly to qualifying uniform items only. For example, if a member of staff is required to wear black trousers and a buy a branded top, then relief only applies to the cost of the branded top. There is no tax relief where clothing can be worn both for work and causally.

EXPENSES If the employee incurs costs cleaning or maintaining their uniform or protective clothing, they can claim tax relief for the reasonable cost of doing so. There are various flat rate expenses that can be claimed details of which can be found on HMRC's website - https:// www.gov.uk/guidance/jobexpenses-for-uniforms-workclothing-and-tools. The amounts vary by job or profession. For example, under the category of Shipyards, an allowance of £140 of a tax bill is permissible. Lastly, employers who require their employees to purchase specific items of clothing need to take care that this doesn't result in the employee being paid less than the National Minimum/Living Wage. 8 Helen Thornley is a technical officer at the Association of Taxation Technicians, a professional accounting body.

which is entirely different to the federal super-state that the EU is nowadays. “I'm glad we kept out of the common currency and other entanglements.” In his view, the referendum “was a clear message that we want our country back with control of our laws, our borders and our ability to trade worldwide without being dictated to by Brussels.” EXAGGERATED The problem for Bruce is that at the time of the referendum, “both sides both lied and exaggerated to generate fear” and that two years down the line he thinks that is still happening with “all sorts of untruths and

nonsense being spouted to frighten everybody.” As he sees it, “the simple truth is that we traded with the whole world before joining with the EU and when we leave we will continue to trade with the whole world on balanced terms without the EU calling the shots.” NO DIFFERENCE As to how Brexit has affected business, Bruce says he's seen absolutely no difference in business during the

negotiations: “We import from the EU and non-EU countries and we export to the EU and non-EU countries. “We have seen absolutely no changes or events that are limiting our own expansion plans.” Interestingly, Bruce is “seeing both the leisure and the commercial boat building world continuing to trade normally and no customers are citing Brexit as something that is impacting their business.”

ULTRALIGHTWEIGHT COMPACT DINGHY Tiwal has launched a 2.8m long, super lightweight and compact inflatable sailing dinghy which can be ready to sail in 15 minutes. Designed and developed by Tiwal's Marion Excoffon, the 40kg single-handed Tiwal 2 is assembled in five stages: hull inflation, inserting the daggerboard well, installing the rig, the appendages and then finished off with the pump. “I wanted the Tiwal 2 to be a companion for the whole family," explained Marion, who is at the forefront of the family-fun French business. "I imagined an ultra-simple boat that goes to basics. It is at the same time a proper sailing boat and a great toy to play on." The aluminium dinghy is equipped with a North Sails loose-footed 5.6sqm Dacron sail and C50 five-part carbon mast and hull that is inflated to a high-pressure. A V-shaped hull and a daggerboard have been incorporated to make going upwind easier and the Tiwal 2 will even plane. The dinghy will be on display at boot Düsseldorf.

Based on its experience with the XM product range, Bainbridge has developed a new range of Aqua Marine offshore clothing for 2019. The range is available in graphite grey in small, medium, large and extra-large sizes with 12 part numbers. “We don't want to offer lots of colours, season changes and styles, just great design in a simple range that makes margin for the retailer,” explained Andrew Watson, sales and marketing director, Bainbridge International. “Aimed at the small to medium retailer who wants a short range of sailing

It is complimented by an additional 6K lite/spray jacket, offered in the same graphite colourway to enable sailors to switch jackets for day regatta or light conditions sailing. “This enhances the flexibility and usage from the suit, whilst keeping the shop stock to a minimum,” said Andrew.

NEW ACTIV’ COLLECTION IS DESIGNED FOR FLEXIBILITY Plastimo is to launch its new Activ' collection of garments tailored to suit all sea wear activities. The company has teamed up with French stylists and designers with the mission to create hi-tech performance gear equally adapted to seaside leisure activities and active boating. “Every element in our garments has been submitted to stringent tests and selected for its ability to guarantee high performance and durable quality,” said Cathy Millien, Plastimo communication manager. “When sailing, the weather is always changing. People are more and more used to practicing different kinds of nautical activities. “Based on this observation, Plastimo decided to develop an extremely versatile collection that adapts to all activities and weather conditions.” ENHANCED MOBILITY Three-layer laminated fabric is used for optimum flexibility for enhanced mobility on

board and unhindered movements. It also contributes towards regulating body temperature, explained Cathy. The outer shell is water-repellent and protects the membrane. It has some stretch capacity for added comfort. A microporous hydrophobic membrane ensures waterproofness,

breathability and acts as a wind-cheater function.

NEW PROPORTIONAL THRUSTER CONTROL SYSTEM WHISPERPOWER LAUNCHES SMART INVERTER WhisperPower will be launching its new sine wave inverter at Düsseldorf 2019. The WP Sine 12/3000 is the latest addition to the WPSine 12 V inverter series which already consists of 400, 1000 and 2000 watt inverters. "Until ten years ago 230V equipment on board was pure luxury,” said Johannes Doornbosch, WhisperPower sales manager. “You needed to have a generator and/or expensive battery packs with heavy transformer-inverters. Following the introduction of the latest generation inverters, we are seeing a clear trend towards yacht owners installing more and more 230V equipment on board.” SAVING BATTERIES Existing electrical systems in which a battery charger has already been installed can be extended with one of WPSine inverter models which are ready to go as a 'plug and play' installation. They are equipped with DC connections and an AC socket. There is also an internal 230V connection for a fixed connection to the 230V system. There is also a USB port on the front of the unit. The inverter has additional savings too. "What makes this new WP Sine 12/3000 unique and smart is the automatic internal transfer switch that detects when shore power is available,” said Johannes. “If shore power is present, consumers are directly supplied from the shore instead of via the inverter from the battery, which preserves the battery. That is unique and is not available elsewhere in the market.”

NEW CLUTCHES ARE FOR THINNER LINES Rutgerson is launching two of its most popular clutches in a new version optimised for thinner lines. The RC75 and RC120 have the same high working load as the original clutches: 750 kg for the smaller model and 1200 kg for the larger. “As modern lines are getting stronger, many boat owners are tempted to choose a thinner line dimension on their halyards,” said Charlotte Rutgerson, Rutgerson MD.

24 | JANUARY 2019

“This often results in slipping clutches, which can have a large impact on the boat's performance, forcing many boat owners to switch to smaller clutches with a lower working load than desired.” The new clutches are fitted with the same integrated sheave as the standard version. They also have the same mounting plate for easier installation when upgrading. On the smaller model, RC75, the cam can be

replaced for upgrading. This is available as a spare part. The new RC75 is optimised for lines between 4-8 mm, compared to 8-12 mm on the standard version. The new RC120 is adapted for 8-12 mm lines versus 10-16 mm on the standard clutch. Both models are available as single, double and triple clutches. NEW LINE OF FIXED, LOW-SPEED GENERATORS

NEW BILGEAWAY FILTER FROM RCR River Canal Rescue officially launched its new Bilgeaway filter at METSTRADE. The filter traps the hydrocarbons that are found in petrol, diesel and engine oil and prevents them entering the waterways, rendering them non-reactive prior to disposal. The filter will remove the hydrocarbons to less than three parts per million and according to RCR doesn't exceed five ppm, even when dealing with a 15% oil saturation level. The environmentallyfriendly contents can then be disposed of and the cartridge reused. “As current bilge filter solutions had a poor reputation, we wanted to ensure ours exceeded expectations,” says RCR operations director Jay Forman who devised the filter. “In any water type and temperature, with any hydrocarbons, it continues to operate for an unrivalled length of time, without leaching pollutants into the environment.” The plastic filter comes in small and large sizes and a chrome and stainless steel version is available for larger cruisers and yachts. RCR has joined forces with distribution company 54North and hopes to offer a free disposal and recycling service in the future and is in discussions with marinas and chandleries to arrange cartridge drop-off locations together with various agencies to set up a national network of composting sites.

DAVID BARROW BARROW INTERNATIONAL

'To infinity and beyond' is Buzz Lightyear's famous catchphrase in Toy Story, however it could equally be the mantra of David Barrow, founder of Barrow International. Throughout his 50-year marine sector career, David has not allowed boundaries impede his progress. He sees challenges as opportunities - a chance to show you can 'think outside the box' - and says 'giving up is not an option'. David's drive comes from childhood dyslexia; something he believes set the foundation for business success: “I suffer from dyslexia. This wasn't recognised when I was at school in the 50s/60s and as a result, I was hopeless at academia. “Dyslexia however, gave me an opportunity, it enabled me to come at things from a different angle and not get flustered by taking a direct route. My coping strategies help me function pretty effectively.” HELMSMAN So how did a boy growing up in landlocked Surrey end up in the marine industry? “My mother loved sailing and passed this onto me and my brothers. I joined Frensham Pond Sailing Club near Farnham and progressed from Graduates and Larks to 470s and later became a helmsman on racing yachts, competing around the world.” Such was David's passion for sailing, he left his first job as a John Lewis management trainee to freeup his weekends. A job as a dinghy and yacht claims inspector for London Marine Underwriting came next, with owner David Crumb teaching David valuable 'life lessons'. “What I learned during two years with LMU have served me well for the rest of my life... work hard, work smart,

be innovative and make your own luck.” CONVINCED A desire to be more 'handson' in the marine sector led 24 year-old David to leave London for a role with Lymington-based Stern Sailing Systems. “I convinced co-founder, Phil Crebbin, he needed an admin person and what started in 1976 with three people in a portacabin, ended up 13 years later as a £5m turnover business employing 50 people.” When Phil left the company, co-founder John Green and David shared the day-to-day management. John was the powerhouse behind spar sales and development and David, now a director, managed sales, marketing and distribution. During this time, the business was taken over by Sparcraft. “We quickly realised we could easily produce the masts we imported from the States for IOR one/two tonne yachts

and Admiral's Cup competitors.” NETWORK Such was Sparcraft's success, by 1989 it was recognised as the world's best spar builder. A two-year stint in France, building accounts and a distribution network for northern Europe, soon followed and it was this role that sowed the seed for Barrow International. “While new products were successful in their countries, people were unable to access contacts or distribution networks outside of this. During my business proposition research, I left Sparcraft to join Ancasta as operations director.” In 1992, David left Ancasta to launch Barrow International, helping manufacturers develop distribution networks and distributors access new products. “I describe myself as an 'international agent with knobs-on'; I have marketing capabilities, the expertise when it comes to European regulations and over 2000 contacts.” The challenge, David concedes, is to partner

with the best distributor with the best reputation in a particular country. “This can take up to three years, so patience is a virtue.”

Windship Technology and the product is currently undergoing extensive computer fluid dynamic testing for potential clients.

WIND POWER David estimates he's helped bring 30+ new products to a global market and says clients remain loyal, even after 25 years. “Innovation is key. If a product doesn't resonate with distributors/ boat builders, consider other ways to reach them, for example via their dealers, or expand the package so it's part of a wider portfolio.” Outside Barrow International, David is still keen to innovate. “I'm a director of Windship Technology and we have a motor sailing system that harnesses wind power to reduce commercial shipping carbon emissions by 30%.” David was approached seven years ago and sourced people to put the theory of an idea into practise. A fivestrong global team with leisure marine and commercial shipping skills, plus high-level City connections, now heads

EMISSIONS “This is a game-changer; if adopted by the global shipping fleet it will reduce worldwide emissions by 1%. We're also looking to develop a carbon neutral ship.” For the past 30 years, David has also worked with insurance companies as a yacht mast/rigging claims consultant. “This brings together my skill set - it's satisfying when you identify a claim's cause and hopefully settle it to the satisfaction of all concerned.” David is currently chair of BM's International Committee and has sat on the Government's Marine Sector Advisory Group. He's a past BMF board member and Membership/Marketing Committee chair and was named MTA Personality of the Year in 2013. At 67, he has no plans to retire: “I love what I do and exciting times are ahead.” There are indeed; Buzz would be proud.
