Discovery Yachts Group Ltd has been sold in a pre-pack deal after appointing administrators in December 2019. The move follows the conclusion of undefended court action which has left the company owing nearly £1.2m. “I can confirm that Chris Moore was appointed administrator of Discovery Yachts Group Ltd on 19 December 2019. Immediately upon appointment a pre-pack sale was completed to Binti Marine Holdings Limited, a UK subsidiary of Binti Holding GMBH," said Simon Wall of administrators K J Watkin & Co. "This business rescue has ensured continuity of employment for all employees and all yachts in build will be completed." It is understood that the decision was made to protect the company from a lawsuit brought by a customer, the

conclusion of which took place on 16 December. Andrew France claimed breach of contract against Discovery Yachts Sales Ltd and Discovery Yachts Group Ltd following the latter’s failure to make good defects in a £1.5m yacht Mr France had ordered in 2015. Defects included a leak around the mast collar, a flood in the forward cabin and a generator failure. Despite Mr France being told the problems would be resolved, this did not happen. Following the case heard by Mr Justice Teare in the High Court which Discovery Yachts failed to attend, damages of £911,113 and £262,957 were awarded against Discovery Yacht Sales Ltd and Discovery Yachts Group Ltd respectively.

FAIRLINE YACHTS LOSES £14.8m Fairline Yachts has recorded its third annual loss in a row, despite sales increasing to £31m. The company's accounts for the year ended December 31 2018 show a loss of £14.8m in 2018 - losses over three years of operations amount to £29m - with sales increasing by 28% in 2018 over 2017 and a compound annual growth rate of 60% since the company began operations in January 2016. Directors remuneration amounted to £669,000 with the highest paid director receiving close to £238,000. The financial figures have led to Paul Brown, senior statutory auditor at independent auditor and chartered accountants Grant Thornton questioning the future of the company with the company's liabilities as at December 31 2018 exceeding its assets by £3.5m. “These events or conditions and the continuing funding

requirements of the company, ....indicate that a material uncertainty exists that may cast significant doubt on the company's ability to continue as a going concern,” he said. The company's liabilities included a £2m loan that was fully repaid in 2019 and replaced by loans maturing in 2025. Funding of up to £13m was also secured in August 2019, complementing an additional investment of £17m by the shareholders into the company. As of December 31 2018, the company had net assets of £811,000. Another loss is anticipated for 2019 however the directors remain optimistic that the company will return to profit during 2020. Headcount has increased from 392 employees at December 31 2017 to 468 by December 31 2018 and 540 by November 2019. The company has secured 40% of the forecast production plan for 2020 with the order book going into 2021.

Will boatbuilders learn from their mistakes? This time last year the trade war between the US and China was affecting many businesses in the UK. Not only were their raw materials more expensive but there was also – to use that often coined word – much uncertainty in how it would otherwise affect business. A year on and it’s now the escalation of the Middle East crisis that could affect everyone. We can but hope the politicians will work out a political deal. On a positive note, the US is experiencing high boat sales with 2019 seeing the second highest sales in 12 years and as the 2020 boat show season starts, optimism is running high for a record year. Things were not so positive for Discovery’s investors over Christmas as the company entered administration to be immediately sold in a pre-pack deal. It seems to be almost a habit when companies run into financial difficulties to be placed into liquidation and sold straight away in a prearranged deal. Anyone who invests knows that the value of their investment may go down but - and I’m probably stating the obvious - I’m sure those that invested in Discovery’s crowd funding in 2018 were not expecting this result. It is not clear how much the 400 investors who put around £2.2m into the company will receive – one suspects not much. The lawsuit that trigged the company entering administration centred around a boat that was delivered ‘hurriedly’ to a customer in January 2017 with several problems and according to the court report was not seaworthy. There was apparently an extensive list of outstanding jobs that were due to be carried out but despite promises made to carry out the repairs and emails stating the problems would be resolved, the boatbuilder later instead blamed the owner for lack of sailing knowledge. The owner had planned to sail around the world on the yacht but was told by a marine surveyor not to sail out of sight of land as the boat was not up to the job. I often feel that I bang on about customer service – or lack of – and this seems to be a classic example where matters could have been rectified but were not. In this case it’s led to many investors losing money and the end of a dream for a sailor. With boot Düsseldorf boat show just around the corner, increasing numbers of British exhibitors will be showing off their products. I for one am looking forward to seeing some of the latest products and boats to be launched. One can only hope that boatbuilders do learn from not only their mistakes but also the mistakes of others and everyone has happy customers keen to get out on the water.

BM HQ TO MOVE TO SOUTHAMPTON British Marine is to move its head office to Ocean Village, Southampton. The move will free up the entire current HQ, Marine House in Egham, that will be put up for rent - currently the ground floor is being marketed to rent. It is anticipated the new office in Tagus House will be operational by Spring 2020 with 30 out of BM's current 36 staff transferring locations. Replacements will be recruited for in the coming months. The move is being carried out so BM can achieve its 2025 strategic plan to be a member first organisation, explained commercial director Dean Smith. “We have] aspirations of developing the British marine industry by driving improvements in product and service quality, marine careers, training, government representation and overall consumer participation in UK boating,” he said. ACCESSIBLE “Relocating British Marine's head office to Southampton by Spring 2020 enables the organisation to remain

accessible to its members and positions the organisation in the area in which 65% of the leisure marine workforce are located.” The move will bring the organisation closer geographically to the annual Southampton International Boat Show, reducing travel time to meetings and closer relationships with the city, added Dean. In addition, he explained, many of Britain's maritime organisations are based in the city and transport links are also convenient. WORKSHOPS And he said members further afield from Southampton will be looked after through

holding alternate board meetings in the regions; there are also plans to create regular regional workshop sessions across the country. “It remains our ambition to host regionally based events and our autumn expo in 2020 focused on inland boating will be hosted in the Midlands,” added Dean. “We also intend to proactively support and promote northern regional based boating events in 2020.” It is also hoped that the team will be able to spend more time with members with more member events pre and post board meetings.

DOCKMATE IS APPROVED BY VOLVO PENTA 8 Dockmate’s control system can now be used with Volvo Penta steering systems

Manufacturer of advanced wireless remote controls for yachts, Dockmate, has received factory approval from Volvo Penta. After testing for any potential compatibility issues, Dockmate has obtained approval to connect to the Volvo Penta electronic vessel

control EVC-E and EVC-2. “Our focus on creating a stress-free docking experience is perfectly aligned with Volvo's easy boating philosophy,” said Brian Sheehan, Dockmate spokesperson. “The brand's drive-by-wire engine control systems pair effortlessly with

our plug-and-play remote controls; combining to give our customers incredible power and control over their vessels in tight quarter manoeuvring.” Delivering plug-and-play connectivity with engine and thruster systems, Dockmate's wireless remote control allows users to control their boat's movement while away from the helm. WINDBOATS CELEBRATES CENTENARY Windboats is to celebrate 100 years of yacht building in 2020. The Norfolk-based yachtbuilder crafts a wide variety of vessels ranging from small wooden boats to 72ft luxury cruising yachts and motorboats. Established in 1920 by Graham Bunn, a master craftsman and yacht designer, the yard developed a reputation for excellence in boatbuilding, producing a fleet of hire boats in the Norfolk Broads known as the Windboats. In 1945 the yard was purchased by Donald Hagenbach, who led Windboats to become one of the founder members of the Ship and Boat Builders National Federation, later becoming its president. The business diversified into building aluminium boats in 1957 and soon after started using ferro cement construction under the trade name Seacrete. As we welcome in the new decade, let's check out this year's key marketing trends. 1. Interactive content: Content marketing is evolving and in 2020, brands will be developing increasingly interactive content to drive brand engagement. Interactive content includes shoppable social media posts, AR/VR experiences, 360-degree video, quizzes and polls. 2. Live video: Video was a marketing essential in 2019 and this shows no sign of abating in 2020. This year's added twist is that live video is expected to be worth over $70 billion by 2021. Live video is incredibly popular with consumers - spending three times longer watching live video than watching pre-recorded video. 3. Voice search: The take up of smart speakers with consumers continues apace. Even if your brand isn't ready for smart speaker advertising, it's time to optimise your content for voice search. Voice searchers use longer, more conversational queries so start adjusting your content to suit. 4. Big data, supported by AI and predictive analytics, is helping brands learn more about their audience and customers than ever before. Brands in 2020 will be using data in increasingly sophisticated ways to deliver truly personalised customer experiences. 5. Purpose: Today's consumers want to engage with brands that stand for something, and they have high expectations of their favourite brands. In 2020, brands should be prepared to stand up to scrutiny on key issues - everything from environmental impact to the way employees are treated.

JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates 2020 has almost arrived so what is the outlook for the recreational boating industry here in the US asks Jim Nolan. Talking to the trade and reading its news, overall the mindset is generally positive albeit with some reservations. Here's a look at the latest earnings statements from three of the largest publicly traded companies in our industry regarding 2020: MarineMax 2020 guidance says it “currently expects fully taxed earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $1.58 to $1.68 for fiscal 2020. This compares to a non-GAAP adjusted, but fully taxed, diluted earnings per share of $1.63 in fiscal 2019.” Brunswick at the end of its third quarter said: “Our 2019 plan positions us well heading into 2020 where we remain confident in our adjusted EPS target of $5.00 to $5.50, assuming relatively steady macro-economic conditions and a retail marine market that is flat compared to 2019.” Marine Products Corp states: “For the upcoming model year, we are offering a more focused model line-up which is targeted towards specific market categories in which we believe demand to be strongest.” The views above are supported by The Federal Reserve whose Beige Book release in November stated for the US as a whole: “Outlooks generally remained positive, with some contacts expecting the current pace of growth to continue into next year.”

The research into the potential of 'Nanotechnology Marine Applications' is part of the €1m two-year KETmaritime project led by the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL). The latest study was led by Spanish technology centre IDONIAL in collaboration with INL and Marine South East in the UK. RECRUITMENT HARD IN MARINE, REVEALS REPORT The UK's marine industry faces a large pay disparity between sectors and an inability to recruit talent, particularly young people. These are the findings from the first UK national survey of marine industry salaries. survey, conducted by Marine Resources. However, the survey also found a number of positives such as a lower than national average gender pay gap and an above national average salary. SALARIES AND PAY EQUALITY The average salary in the marine sector is 5.3% above the national average (ONS latest figures from October 2019). However, the survey of 4,665 individuals was heavily weighted towards those living in London and the south with 71.9% of respondents working in those regions. That average salary is not split equally amongst the sectors with those working in the least well paid sector - leisure paid on average 38% less The new Princess Yachts Learning Academy has officially opened at South Devon College. The development follows on from a recent partnership between the college and the boatbuilder and will allow apprentices to be taught at the college while gaining a realistic experience working with the same products and systems that the company uses. The new workshop is 90m² and will provide real life skills training and allow apprentices to practice their areas of specialism in relation to their individual apprenticeship. Apprentices will work on a Princess V40 hull, built especially for the academy. To complement the newly opened workshop, there is also a new Princess Yachts classroom in the college's £17m Hi Tech and Digital Centre.

than those in the most well paid - offshore/marine renewables. Whilst the gender pay gap is lower than the national average - 9.7% versus 17.3% there are concerning disparities when it comes to career progression with only 10% of women earning more than £55k compared with 25% of men. Roles within engineering are listed as the most in-

demand but also the hardest to recruit for. Employers cite high salary expectations, a low number of qualified candidates, the appeal of contract working and the drain of talent from the marine industry to better paid sectors as reasons for the difficulty in recruiting. This perceived talent drain, which was also given as a key reason why employers struggle to recruit for

PRINCESS YACHTS’ NEW ACADEMY OPENS

Apprentices will receive on and off-water activities with exposure to each of the roles involved in building luxury yachts. The week will be structured to follow Princess Yachts' working hours to provide a realistic work experience, with the college

providing a coach to pick up apprentices from Princess Yachts' Coypool base at 7am, returning to the site at 5pm. In addition to their apprenticeship qualifications, each apprentice will receive the Open Awards Exploring Maritime Skills qualification, as well as a

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Journalist

REPAIRS NOT IMPROVEMENTS Businesses often need to repair or improve their premises, and those that properly account for the work can make large savings against their tax bill. Yen-Pei Chen, manager of corporate reporting and tax at the accounting body ACCA, warns that mistakes made in accounting for a project can be very expensive. Chen says that the first thing to get straight is whether the refitting costs relate to repair or improvement. “The distinction makes all the difference. If the costs relate to repair, they are deductible as an expense from taxable profit. If the costs relate to improvement, however, HMRC considers them to be capital expenditure: as such, no deductions from taxable profit are allowed.” Essentially replacing or fixing something to get premises back into working order is fine as a repair but do anything further and the business could stray into capital expenditure. The fact

that the premises has a maintenance problem that must be dealt with doesn't necessarily make the refitting costs deductible as repair. HMRC's manual gives the example of a company that needed to have its roof repaired and decided to open the roof area for extra office space. The fact that the roof was unsound and needed to be repaired was beside the point: the additional work that got done on the roof makes what happened improvement, not repairs. The good news is that if the business ends up with capital expenditure and can't deduct that cost straight from taxable profit, it may still get tax deductions in the form of capital allowances. Yen-Pei says that “changes were announced in the October 2018 Budget and it's well worth taking specific advice.” She then points to the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) which allows a business to claim tax

deductions upfront on the full amount of qualifying expenditure in the year it's incurred: “Businesses can take comfort knowing that the AIA has increased to £1m, up from £200,000, from 1 January 2019 to 1 January 2021. Advice from your accountant here will also be invaluable.” AIA is available on both plant and machinery and integral features. Over and above the limit, lower capital allowances are available each year, on a reducing balance basis. This is currently at 18% for plant and machinery and at 6% (from April 2019) for integral features. Chen says to prioritise integral features over plant and machinery when making AIA claims. This is because capital allowances are

The basic principle is that anything which can be expected to form part of the building - walls, partitions, ceilings, floors, doors, windows and lighting should be premises and not plant available at a lower rate for integral features, “so the more integral features the business can get 100% AIA on the lower the tax bill will be.” To qualify, the expenditure has to be kept 'for permanent employment in the business' - this excludes stock or expendable equipment with a life of less than two years and function as 'an apparatus employed in carrying out the activities of the business' and not as part of the premises in which the business is carried on. “The basic principle,” says Yen-Pei, “is that anything

which can be expected to form part of the building walls, partitions, ceilings, floors, doors, windows and lighting - should be premises and not plant.” She adds though, that if the criteria for plant doesn't apply, it may be possible to look at other special rate allowances which are available on assets which are integral to buildings. “One more thing,” says Yen-Pei , “the October 2018 Budget introduced a new Structures and Buildings Allowance (SBA). This gives a 2% flat rate annual allowance on commercial structures and buildings over a period of 50 years. The new SBA is available to renovations and conversions started after 29 October 2018.” Buildings covered by the SBA won't qualify for the AIA.

BREXIT CHRIS FEIBUSCH: Wescom Signal and Rescue UK

WILL UK AUTHORITIES ACCEPT EU APPROVALS? While Chris Feibusch, director of global marketing and communications at Wescom Signal and Rescue UK, a firm that manufactures and designs of pyrotechnic marine rescue signalling devices, is unsure what Brexit means for the UK economy he isn't happy with the current situation. “Whether leaving the EU turns out to be a good thing for the UK and its economy, only time will tell. However, it is the ongoing uncertainty, while the negotiations are taking place, that have had a detrimental effect on business in general and the

12 | JANUARY 2020

overall economy.” This said, Chris notes that the outcome is largely out of our hands and most importantly, businesses should prepare to react swiftly and decisively to challenges. Brexit hasn't affected Wescom. Fortunately, the company manufactures within the EU and so its approvals are administered by an EU based test house and competent marine authority. However, he adds that “in the future, post Brexit, we don't know for certain whether the UK authorities, for UK flagged vessels, will accept European approvals

(although we expect and hope they will), but we will need to monitor the situation and be prepared, just in case, to ensure there is no disruption in supply.” EXTRA BUREAUCRACY Clearly Brexit is an issue for some and Chris says Wescom's customers within the UK accept that there may be some initial disruption and additional costs relating to extra bureaucracy and possible tariffs post-Brexit. He says that “the general feeling among our EU based distributors and customers is that Brexit will be detrimental

to UK business.” He adds that “the terms of any deal have not yet been negotiated and so any view on whether it will be positive or negative is only speculation.” For him, the debate has been so heavily politicised that it is hard to distinguish facts from opinions or 'expert' views. As for Wescom's future, Chris is confident. “We do not anticipate being adversely affected as our business is predominantly based on the supply of

mandatory safety equipment and we do not have any domestically based competitors, ensuring a level playing field going forward.” Chris also points out that the company exhibits at, visits and supports distributors at various exhibitions around the EU and “post Brexit we expect that there may well be an additional administrative burden in moving display materials and travelling around the EU with visas and carnets etc.”

ARK MARINE DERRICK SOLVES DINGHY PROBLEM 8 The three operating positions of Ark Marine’s Dinghy Derrick

Photo: Ark Marine

Ark Marine has solved a problem for cruising yacht owners with the launch of its new Dinghy Derrick (DD). New cruising yacht designs are moving towards a drop-down transom platform which leaves no room for conventional deck mounted davits, explained Mike Arkell of Ark Marine. Whilst there are manual telescopic davits available for some new yachts they are compromised in function and very onerous to retro fit to an existing yacht. Moreover, steeply raked sterns require davits of such arm reach that the base footprint cannot take the bending moment, so effectively suffer the same problem even if deck space were present. The DD provides an alternative to towing through

its three position system. Firstly, the DD elevates the dinghy, sliding up a

pair of tracks to the top position where it is locked for safety.

During carriage, the DD carries the dinghy at the bottom of the sliding tracks.

This position can be adjusted higher or lower to suit conditions, such as heeling during tacking where there is a benefit to having the dinghy a little higher. When launched the dinghy is not dropped vertically downwards, but lowered at an angle into the water to an adjustable distance away to allow use of a drop-down platform or clear a raked stern. DD can carry a substantial RIB and engine up to 130kgs with the weight broadly dispersed across multiple structural points. It works by pushbutton control of an integral winch system and can be launched in less than 20 seconds even with no power.

NEW ZF ELECTRIC DRIVE SYSTEM 8 ZF’s electric drive system includes a high-end induction motor

ZF is continuing to expand its portfolio of marine propulsion products with a fully electric system that can be combined with the company's Steerable Pod Propulsion system (SPP). The new drive system is emission and noise free and

the speed of the motor is controllable. The electric motor has a maximum output of 125kW. ZF is currently testing the electric propulsion concept with the system installed on an innovation vessel that has been cruising Lake Garda

since September 2019. “When we developed this high-end induction motor we were able to draw on synergy effects within the ZF Group,” Massimiliano Cotterchio, head of sales pleasure craft product line explained. “We use the same platform and many of the same system components our company already uses successfully and widely in other applications.” The prototype has a 60kWh lithium-ion battery and has been achieving an average sustained speed of 7 knots (13 km/h) with a range of around 30 nautical miles (55.5 km). The battery pack is positioned at the stern and is provided with a cooling system for best performance.

FOUL-RELEASE COATING FOR TRANSDUCERS

THE ONLY NAME FOR MARINE STAINLESS

8 Propspeed has developed a foul-release coating specifically for transducers

NEW OPTION Allen has launched an additional option for its range of ratchet blocks, dubbed the Wave Ratchet, increasing friction to the rope being trimmed making it easier for sailors to hold higher loads. The Wave Ratchet sheave has an offset V style grip, made from hard-wearing recycled plastic nylon that enables the ratchet to grip the rope at additional points around the sheave, resulting in more grip. The new Wave sheave is available in Allen’s 60mm Pro- Ratchet and X2 AutoRatchet blocks. The 50mm Pro- Ratchet and 45mm X2 AutoRatchet are expected to include the Wave option in the coming months.

Underwater coatings manufacturer, Propspeed, has introduced a new foulrelease coating designed specifically for transducers. Designed by industry engineers and designated by Airmar as a certified transducer coating, Foulfree releases marine growth, reducing the maintenance needed to keep transducers clean and streamlining water flow. “Foulfree is an exciting new coating specifically made to enhance the performance of transducers,” said Chris Baird, chief executive of Propspeed. “Bringing together our revolutionary product design and working with the experts in transducer functionality from Airmar, we are able to offer boaters around the world a new solution to an age-old problem and improve sonar performance for anglers and cruisers alike.”

SAFE FOR MARINE ENVIRONMENT Fouling on the face of transducers can reduce their sensitivity, bottom-echo returns and positive fish targets. Transducers also perform best with minimal turbulence over their surface

during operation. Foulfree is a specialised foul-release coating that is biocide-free and does not poison marine growth. Once cured, it forms a slippery surface over the transducer, preventing marine growth from attaching to its surface.

Foulfree joins Propspeed's existing product line which includes an eponymous foul-release system for propellers and running gear and Lightspeed, a transparent foul-release coating specifically formulated for underwater lights.

ADDITION TO CCOMM SOLUTION Channel 28’s new TETRA radio solution for crew radios is customised to meet the needs of larger yachts with up to 60 crew. The TETRA system is compatible across a range of different handsets, which include the ST7500 and ST7000 Motorola handsets. “TETRA, also known as Terrestrial Trunked Radio, is a technology used to provide the 'mission critical' private mobile communications services needed by professional users such as the emergency services,” said Adrian Hicks, director of Channel 28. “We have introduced this platform to the cComm solution as privacy on superyachts is paramount, but it is also capable of transmitting across a much larger number of channels on much larger superyachts than standard digital mobile radios.”

MARQUIP EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR SMALLER YACHTS MarQuip's new exhaust system is designed to ensure all yachts above 24m meet new IMO Tier III regulations limiting NOx emissions. The regulations are already in place for large vessels with an engine output of 130 kW or more. From 2021 these same regulations will come into force for all yachts above 24m, regardless of volume. MarQuip believes its new system is the most compact system for yachts under 500GT or 50m. Coming ready for installation and with ISO14001:2015 certification, it meets the challenges of available space on smaller yachts by integrating its waterinjection system inside the SCR/silencer unit. PROFILE

ANDREW PARTINGTON HONDA

It was inevitable Honda's European business development manager, Andrew Partington, would end up in a role that allowed him to focus on his two great interests; engines and water. He grew up on the Isle of Man where motorbikes, cars and boats are an essential part of life. Introduced to sailing aged six, when his clergyman father bought a clinker National 18, Andrew went on to competitively sail a Laser, Topper and Kestrel. “We were surrounded by sea, so sailing and watersports were a given, but I also had friends with motorbikes and rode them whenever I could.” Andrew is responsible for Honda's power product business development division and says engines and boats are intrinsically linked: “Engines don't float, but motor boats wouldn't go anywhere without an engine, so the key is optimising how they work together.” His initial plan was to teach; Andrew studied computer science and biology at Chester College (part of Liverpool University). “Here I started windsurfing and rowing/coxing and this became my main sport for 25 years. I now sail when I can, racing on a J120 in the JOG series.” CUSTOMER RELATIONS After teaching computer science and biology in a private Surrey senior school for two years, Andrew realised the profession wasn't for him. He swapped sectors and went onto manage a team of service engineers for Veeder Root and worked in customer relations for car hire firm, Alamo. “I was approached by a recruitment manager who asked if I fancied a customer relations career with Honda and the rest as they say, is history.”

the larger RIBs which are also in demand across much of northern Europe. Southern Europe, in contrast, prefers the med style of boat with sun deck (in Italy, Honda dominates the 200-250hp outboard market), while the Nordic region opts for mid range 40-100hp engines, to support its growing number of environmentally-friendly aluminium boats. “In general, we're seeing an overall shift towards larger horse-power and bigger boats.”

Andrew's been with Honda for nearly 25 years. When he joined the company in 1995, the Japanese giant's career development strategy was to move employees into new roles every two years. He started in the automotive side of the business and as well as customer relations, worked in field sales and dealer network development, moving to Europe in 2001.

Partington'? He expected people to come up with an answer or a strategy, as 'I don't know' would not cut it.” In 2012, Andrew moved into power products, taking up his latest position in 2017 with a brief to expand Honda's sales channels and develop relationships with key boat builders. “It's about finding the best way to get the range of products we manufacture to the customer. Our power products' motto is 'helping

MOTIVATION “This gave me a great insight into logistics and I had some excellent managers whose approach and energy motivated me.” From 2008-2012 Andrew was in the automobile division, working alongside Honda's senior vice president and European leader Ken Keir. “He was a brusque Scotsman who didn't suffer fools gladly, and was a brilliant mentor. Although he retired in 2014, I can still recall Ken's gruff Dundee accent asking 'so what are you going to do about it

people get things done' and over the last couple of years I've launched e-commerce stores across the EU and developed key partner relationships, offering dealers unique products to sell.” And it appears every region has its favourite. Andrew reports the UK is particularly fond of small outboards, used to support tender-style boats, as well as

PIONEER Back in 1964, environmental concerns and 'being nice to fish' were very much on founder, Soichiro Honda's, agenda. He said: “Because the water raises rice and the fishes live in the water, I don't want to contaminate it.” As a consequence Honda pioneered four-stroke technology, making an outboard engine it describes as 'clean, quiet and just as much a part of marine life as fish'. Five decades on, Honda states its 80 plus outboards are cleaner and quieter than ever. Career highs for Andrew range from implementing a consistent sales format across all 200 car dealerships in the 1990s and setting up an e-commerce store in the UK within six months (corporates don't usually work this fast) to launching two unique to Honda boat ranges (Ranieri and Highfield) in 2018/19 and powering chase boats for the INEOS Team UK and Alex Thomson racing. And life lessons and tips? “Confirm to the best of your ability what you're being told, everyone has their own agenda, keep your sense of humour - things find a way of working out - and don't stand on Lego. Challenge the status quo and always put yourself in the customer's position.” 8 Andrew took up his role as Honda's European business development manager in 2017
