Dean & Reddyhoff and Quay Marinas are merging to create a new business which will operate the second largest number of coastal marinas with the widest network around the UK. The deal - for an undisclosed sum - will see £10m invested over the next five years in the 11 marinas spanning the south coast and Isle of Wight, the Bristol Channel, Irish Sea and the Clyde. The merger means the creation of a new single brand and is expected to complete in autumn 2019. "By merging with Quay Marinas, we will be bringing together the strengths of both companies and our joint ambition is to make our marinas the destination of choice for all types of boaters in the UK, across the whole of the UK,” said Michael Prideaux, Dean & Reddyhoff MD. As well as providing berths for boats, the full range of services that customers need will be offered for experienced and new boaters. "Whether they are cruising, racing, fishing or diving, behind the scenes we’ll be working hard to make sure that our new company puts what our customers want at the heart of our business,” explained Simon Haigh, Quay Marinas MD. The new business will operate marinas in Bangor, Conwy Quays, Deacons, East Cowes, Haslar, Penarth, Portishead, Portland, Rhy, Newcastle and Weymouth. Alongside the 4,000 berths and 150 staff, the business will also operate boat yards, maintenance and sales.

HOPE If someone who works in the industry and knows many of the people and companies involved can’t get satisfaction, what hope has the rest of the boating population? It seems to me that at a time when we keep hearing how boating is in decline and the industry is struggling, everyone needs to be pulling out all the stops and going the extra mile. I wonder if there was a poll of end user satisfaction carried out asking what their experience was like, what the results would be? As my friend pointed out, people are so used to mediocre service, they are surprised when we carry out what we promised to carry out and are very grateful as if they didn’t expect it. Is it just the leisure marine industry or have we become complacent in our day to day lives as well, accepting bad service as if it’s the norm? Do we need more competition in order for companies to realise they need to ‘pull their socks up’? INCREASED NUMBERS On a more positive note, it was good to hear that some of the UK’s boat shows are doing well and attracting increased visitor numbers. This month we were told records were broken (again) at Crick Boat Show and also that the British Motor Yacht Show and the new South Coast Boat Show were both a success and firmly in the UK boating calendar. There are more shows springing up around the country filling the gaps in national events and these are receiving good feedback. One can only hope that this will translate into full orderbooks for our manufacturers and suppliers.

Service complacency Service in any industry is important but, in an industry where people don’t necessarily need the products or services, customer satisfaction should be of primary importance. Businesses often seem to have a ‘it will be good enough’ attitude or even worse a ‘don’t really care’ mentality. There doesn’t seem to be much checking to see if for example, the right part is being sent out or making sure that customer expectations are fulfilled. Speaking to a friend of mine who is in the industry confirmed this. He has been waiting for around six weeks for a part to be delivered for his boat so he can actually use it and enjoy being on the water. However, the company concerned seems to have messed up on more than one occasion – either not being able to get hold of said part and then sending the wrong item. All very frustrating when we have a limited window of good weather and want to enjoy what is - to be frank costing a lot of money each year to keep.
A High Court has ruled in favour of Sealegs International, finding that former employees breached copyright over the design and manufacture of amphibious kits developed by its founder, Maurice Bryham. The New Zealand based court granted Sealegs a permanent injunction against Orion Marine, Darren Leybourne, Smuggler
Marine Ltd, Yun Zhang and David Pringle and ordered that the defendants pay costs and damages. ONE MILLION DOLLARS Maurice told the New Zealand Herald newspaper that the court case had cost around NZ$1m. “It's good to see that we can now proceed with cost and damages,” he said. “It's a relief that the time,

money and distraction to the business is pretty much over and that we can get back to selling Sealegs around the world.” Sealegs, part of Future Mobility Systems, manufactures amphibious kits for installation on small boats. Maurice created the kits in 2000, which feature retractable legs enabling boats to be driven over land and into and out of water. In 2012, Orion Marine was founded by Darren Leybourne and Yun Zhang to compete with Sealegs. The latter alleged that the defendants infringed copyright in three of Sealegs' models, each equipped with its amphibious retractable leg system. UNRESERVEDLY APPROPRIATED In the decision, Justice Paul Davidson said,” I find that what the defendants did copy was a substantial part of the Sealegs copyright models by reason of their adoption and reproduction of the Sealegs arrangement or pattern of features.” “They unreservedly appropriated it,” he added. Sealegs also sought an order that Orion gives up its infringing products so that they may be destroyed. This request is subject to a further hearing.

Licence compliance on the Canal & River Trust's waterways remains high with 96.5% of boaters holding a valid licence, down slightly on 2018 (96.9%). This is the tenth year that licence compliance has remained above 95% according to the Trust's annual national boat count. “Boat licences contribute around 10% of our total income so it's important that everyone who keeps a boat on our waterways pays their fair share, said on Horsfall, Trust head of customer service support. “On occasion we do have to take robust action to remove boats. “In 2018/19 106 boats were removed from our canals and rivers as they were unlicensed or in breach of our terms and conditions. The count identified a 2.3% increase in boat numbers, with all regions except the
North West seeing small increases in boat numbers. London and the South
East was the only region where licence compliance was under 95% (94.1%).

FOUR YEARS OF GROWTH FOR YANMAR WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates The relatively calm world of boat loans over here is facing upheaval. Two of the larger banks in this field, BB&T and SunTrust, announced in February that BB&T is acquiring SunTrust thus creating the sixth-largest US retail bank. The closing is expected late in Q3 or Q4 2019. An article in the Wall Street Journal says that "technology was the main impetus for the deal". The article also points out "BB&T and SunTrust, which have more than 3,100 branches all told and about 740 within two miles of each other, both have been shuttering locations as customers migrate to digital offerings." It is not hard to believe that the shuttering might increase. The digital offerings are also known as Fintech, the shortened version of Financial technology. Wikipedia describes it as “the technology and innovation that aims to compete with traditional financial methods in the delivery of financial services.” In essence, Fintech enables banks to use software and modern technology to take the place of people and their associated expense. According to CNBC “Fintech companies now make up 38% of the personal loan market - up from just 5% five years ago, according to new data from TransUnion”. SunTrust already has an active Fintech division, LightStream, a national online consumer lending portal providing personal loans for a variety of uses including boat/RV/aircraft purchase or refinance.

GROUPE BENETEAU RESTRUCTURES ACTIVITIES The Groupe Beneteau subsidiary Construction Navale Bordeaux is restructuring its activities with a focus on the industrial construction of large multihulls at its site in Bordeaux. The production of the CNB Yachts brand's sailing superyachts will be transferred to the Monfalcone site in Italy from September 2019. Groupe Beneteau plans to capitalise on a buoyant market for multihulls by pursuing its 2016-2020 aim of doubling production capacity. In line with this goal, Construction Navale Bordeaux will focus on building large multihulls for the Lagoon brand and the EXCESS brand, which will be available from September. The necessary conversion of the B5 building to
accommodate the multihull activity will represent an investment of around â‚Ź2.75m over the financial year 2019/20, while the revenue growth linked to this increase in capacity is expected to reach around â‚Ź10m from financial year 2020/21. There are no changes to existing jobs and a further dozen roles will be created over time. DOCKSIDE LOCATION With flexible capabilities calibrated for luxury units with high levels of customisation, the site is fully aligned with the requirements for this type of boat. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has rejected a proposal submitted by Turkey and the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) that sought to mitigate the impact on the yachting industry caused by Tier III regulation. Turkey and ICOMIA proposed an alternative standard for vessels currently covered under a delay provision which expires in 2021. Meeting this standard results in reduced guest cabin space as gas exhaust treatment systems have to be installed. The consequence of this could render yachts just above the 24m threshold commercially unattractive, a segment that ICOMIA considers crucial for the marine industry. Udo Kleinitz, secretary general of ICOMIA said that the council fought hard to advocate for the industry. "Having been involved with

"We are most grateful to those IMO member states who supported our proposal and would like to mention in particular Turkey for cosponsoring this document
and the associated lobbying efforts, as well as Malta for their efforts on the European stage. "I also would like to thank the yards who supported our advocacy effort, namely Ferretti Group, Overmarine, Monte Carlo Yachts, Princess Yachts, Sanlorenzo Yachts, Sunseeker and Viking Yachts, he added.

Despite ICOMIA's significant efforts the proposal was rejected, meaning that the regulation will be implemented from 2021 for vessels below 500gt, with significant implications for the superyacht industry.

There is often a rivalry in business between sales and marketing with each feeling under appreciated by the other. In a small enterprise quite often an individual has the dilemma as to what to spend their time on - sales or marketing, which is most beneficial? In my opinion both are equally important, requiring adequate investment, resource and management to work in harmony for optimum results. However, a misbalance is found all too frequently. Yes, at points in a business life cycle the differing functions will have a greater or lesser focus on them, but without some form of selling there is no revenue and as such no viable business. On the flip side, what does the sales function do if there is no product to sell, the product does not address any market need or has no differentiation to competitors? Some of the most important basic tasks are: MARKETING 5 Understanding the needs of the chosen market place 5 Ensuring products created address the needs of the market place 5 Ensuring distinct features and benefits exist over any competitor offering 5 Promoting the business and products across various channels

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Journalist
AVOIDING A VIRUS At the end of January 2019 tyre fitter Kwik Fit confirmed its computer network had been infected with a virus and its systems knocked offline. The company was forced to cancel bookings and customers vented their anger on social media. More recently, a US student pleaded guilty for using a USB killer stick to destroy 66 computers on his university campus. He faces ten years in prison. If this can happen to large organisations, how small firms stay safe? 1. Install protection No form of inoculation can ever be perfect but installing an anti-virus package from a reputable software vendor is a crucial step to take. Some suppliers charge but free versions are available from the likes of Avast and Microsoft. 2. Update and scan Over time viruses morph as designers work around the protections that security software puts in place.
Regularly scanning a computer or network for downloaded or installed threats is an absolute must. It ought to be done daily but should be carried out at least once a week. Scans are intensive and can slow systems so should be timed for an off-peak moment. 3. Update the operating system Computers need regular updating. Systems are hugely complex and run to millions of lines of code and are riddled with vulnerabilities; it's the reason why developers issue software updates. Turn auto update on. 4. The network is at risk Failing to secure a network can leave online devices open to threats. The problem is exacerbated when devices
are left with both default names and default passwords; this helps hackers see what is connected and so guides an attack. Default device names and passwords should be changed. WiFi, once set up, should not broadcast its existence - turn off what is called the 'SSID'. Passwords should be strong - select WPA or WPA2 encryption. Visitors should connect to a router with a guest network which allows access to the web and nothing else. 5. Strong passwords Passwords should never re-used. Those that have been compromised will find that other accounts are also at risk. As to how to create a strong password; avoid names, places, pets or dates of birth.
Assuming that a business is unlikely to be attacked is a foolish stance and one that will lead to disaster. All it takes is a lucky find by a hacker combined with easy access for the rest to be history
Use a long mixture of upper case, lower case, numbers, and symbols. Passwords should be changed frequently and whenever an employee leaves. 6. Put sites off limits Staff policies should cover what can and cannot be done online. This means detailing which websites can be visited and that no software is to be downloaded or installed. 7. Be private Staff should be made aware of 'social engineering' where a caller persuades staff to give away private data. Staff should never give any private information out without being certain of the person or organisation asking. The same applies to social media posts. Theft by social engineering is much easier than expending effort on hacking systems. 8. Staff devices Threats come from staff connecting devices to the
company network or their computer. Thought should be given to limiting access to the firm's Wifi or physical network. The same applies to USB devices - fraudsters have been known to drop an infected USB stick so that an individual will pick it up and connect it to their computer to see what's on it. 9. Back up Planning for disaster should be part of regular housekeeping. Backing up data onto several separate devices, regularly and keeping them off site at different locations is critical. Consider a combination of methods such as external hard drives, offsite computers and cloud storage services such as Dropbox; encrypt the backups. To conclude Assuming that a business is unlikely to be attacked is a foolish stance and one that will lead to disaster. All it takes is a lucky find by a hacker combined with easy access for the rest to be history.
BREXIT ANDY SIMS: MD, AJS Technical Services (UK)
THE UK IS A GOOD PLACE TO DO BUSINESS Andy Sims, MD of AJS Technical Services (UK), a firm involved with nautical projects and product supply, holds some strong views on Brexit and the way the process is being handled. “It would be fair to say I was surprised to an extent that the vote came out to leave, but actually saw that it should have created an opportunity to pick our heads up and look at trade on a global basis, in effect re-engaging with the world at large.” He says that it's sad that the vast bulk of the political class “has done its upmost to

ignore what they never wanted to happen and it's a complete mess. We do a good job in talking our country down at the best of times and this has been a lamentable episode.” In fairness, he says that it always needed a leader to cut a path through the mess, but that “the political class does not possess one.” As to how Brexit is affecting business, he expected a negative effect but on the contrary, has had strong growth in the last few years and doesn't currently see any major change in that in the next 12 months. In his
view, “the UK is a good place to do business and to produce goods.” Of the future, Andy's customers are “either bored of or have moved on from the Brexit bubble and are just getting on with life.” He reckons that whatever happens they will continue to do so - “business has had to become resilient to the doom mongers so that it can get on.” If Brexit actually happens, his firm “would reset and get on with business like we always have done, maybe move a bit faster and be a bit more expansive.” In the end
he says it's down to him to make whatever the future holds successful. Ultimately, he thinks that Brexit in any of its proposed 2016 forms is unlikely to actually be enacted “what we have now is a whole layer of voters who will disengage from the
process ('what's the point?') and the vacuum will be filled with minority issue driven politics.” He suggests that politics as we have come to know it “will end and become less and less relevant to the majority, but in the end, business will still carry on.”
It would be fair to say I was surprised to an extent that the vote came out to leave, but actually saw that it should have created an opportunity to pick our heads up and look at trade on a global basis, in effect re-engaging with the world at large

DOMETIC EXTENDS ITS TITANIUM RANGE Dometic has introduced the new titanium VARCX variable capacity chiller range, following the success of titanium in its other products. Combining Dometic's use of industrial-grade titanium with the latest variable speed technology, the VARCX provides boat owners with corrosion-resistant, longlasting and energy efficient chiller equipment. “The VARCX offers all the efficiency benefits associated with the VARC chiller line, plus the condenser coils made of titanium make the units virtually immune to erosion and corrosion, significantly extending the life of cooling systems,” said Peter Kruk, Dometic EMEA president. “The variable capacity technology incorporated into all of Dometic's VARC chillers ensures that the systems work efficiently whether the boat is in full use in a hot climate or just with limited crew in the evening on limited power supply.” The VARCX achieves variable capacities of 12,000 to 48,000 BTU, 15,000 to 60,000 BTU and 18,000 to 72,000, while maximising chiller efficiency and reducing electrical load fluctuations. It can be adjusted to economy, standard or boost mode. The use of titanium is a ground-breaking development for chiller longevity in the marine industry, ensuring seawater erosion and corrosion caused by marine organic growth are kept to a minimum, added Peter. After three years of evaluations and feedback from its prominent customers, Dometic is continuing to incorporate titanium condensers into more of its products.

ITR CELEBRATES 35 YEARS OF DIESEL HEATING Canadian heating systems company, International Thermal Research, is developing a new control system for its diesel heater to allow greater fuel efficiencies and reduced emissions. The company manufactures and sells diesel-fired burner systems including the Hurricane hydronic heating system and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The DC powered heater system is suitable for a range of vessels including ocean going, riverine and canal boats. “The proprietary Hurricane technology, based on patents developed by ITR, uses a low pressure, low emission burner that creates no smoke or smell in normal operation,” explained Matt Preen, MD of UK distributor Calcutt Boats. SUPPLEMENTAL HEAT “This technology is designed with the user in mind and is simple and economical to maintain or repair.” Marcello Velenosi, ITR's vice president of sales and

marketing, added: “Its low pressure, low emission burner provides powerful heating performance without the usual diesel smoke and smell because of less nozzle wear. “Supplemental heat provided by electric immersion heating elements maintain the coolant temperature without the necessity of burner operation for low water usage.” An electronic control panel features multiple zone
control, domestic water heating control, and an engine heat control. DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION An optional engine heat supplement control allows potable water heating without running the diesel burner. A touch screen interface with on-screen help menu and diagnostic information allows remote control and monitoring using an app available on both Android
and iOS devices. ITR has also developed combination heaters that feature on demand continuous hot water and that can obtain supplemental heat from electric immersion elements and a yacht's engine waste heat. “ITR is innovative and has obtained over 40 patents relation to diesel heater design,” added Marcello. The new control system will have more features and self-diagnostics when it is released.
ENERGY SAVING PROMISED WITH EXPANDED RANGE Frigomar has expanded its range of advanced inverter technology air conditioning from the chilled water systems traditionally used on superyachts to small self-contained air conditioning units used on smaller vessels. Now available from 7000BTU/h up to 16000BTU/h, Frigomar units have an energy rating of A. “Their unique power control system ensures the start current requirement is effectively non-existent, being only 2A (maximum),” explained Rod Boreham, MD of UK distributor Advance Yacht Systems. “As they can run at very low compressor speeds, they can produce cool air continuously at an incredibly

low power - 200W max.” The system uses technology that does not rely on physical sensors to determine the
rotational position of the compressor. “This is the clever bit which controls the application of
power at precisely the right time, making it all possible,” added Rod. “What this means to a boat builder or boat owner is that an air conditioning system can be started and run with a very small source of mains power; there is no need to cater for the large inrush current normally needed.” The fan unit rotates for ease of installation and the power control box can be demounted and attached to a nearby surface when space is limited. The units will also provide heat by operating in reverse cycle mode.

NEW MODELS PROMISE LOWER POWER CONSUMPTION
8 Taylor's paraffin heater is fuelled from its own pump pressurised supply tank
TAYLOR’S HEATERS OFFER SAILING COMFORT Taylor's paraffin and diesel heaters enable sailors to enjoy their time on the water, whatever the weather. The 079k paraffin (kerosene) heater is fuelled from its own pump pressurised supply tank. It is supplied with 1.5-gallon tank, a safety on/off fuel control valve, in-line fuel filter, pipe work and fittings for installation. “Accessed from the front opening door, the burner is self-cleaning and self pricking and like all Taylor's burners extremely reliable,” said Dan Henderson, Sea Sure sales manager, which manufactures Taylor's products. “This model provides a dry heat thus reducing condensation.” Externally vented and bulkhead mounted, the paraffin heater is also supplied with through-deck fitting flue sections and available with a stainless steel or brass front. Taylor's O79D diesel heater, also available in brass or stainless steel, is fuelled by generally available diesel, either from its own gravity tank (header tank version) or pumped direct from the boat's supply (main fuel tank version). “The main fuel tank version diesel cabin heater requires an electric supply which only uses 0.25Ah per day,” added Dan.
Airtronic has launched two new models of diesel fuelled air heating units. The Airtronic 2 D2L and Airtronic 2 D4L are suitable for heating sail and power boats from 23ft to 45ft. CAN bus technology drives the heating system which increases reliability and makes the internal workings more robust by minimising wiring looms, making the heaters less exposed to electrical faults. “Smarter finger-tip temperature control enables boat owners to benefit from greater fuel efficiency and lower power consumption,” said Matthew Birks, marine technical manager. “The new Airtronic models will keep owners and crew warm, dry and free of condensation.” OPERATING NOISE The metering pump is noise-optimised reducing any operating noise
previously associated with air heaters. The brushless motor increases the life and the reliability of the heating system with Airtronic stating that integration of the advanced technology means the 2 D2L and 2 D4L will last 40% longer than previous

LIGHTING IS MADE AS EASY AS POSSIBLE
EQUIPMENT NEEDS TO BE COMPACT YET FUNCTIONAL An issue that many superyacht owners face is in relation to an onboard gym and working out how to maximise the use of space effectively, says Zoe Alexander, client relations at Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors. The company designs gyms and spas for superyachts, working with clients to install bespoke wellness areas. “For the more luxurious yachts with plenty of space, fitting in gym equipment can be relatively straight forward,” explained Zoe. “However, for boats that have limited space, the need for equipment to be compact, yet functional is of high importance.” One of the most popular pieces of equipment that Gym Marine is asked for is the VersaClimber that provides a full-body workout and can be adapted for novices and advanced athletes alike. “With its small floorspace, it doesn't take up much room leaving space to be used more efficiently for other equipment elsewhere in the room,” said Zoe. “There is a lot to consider when purchasing equipment for any wellness space.” Considerations include knowing ceiling heights and understanding access.

The 150ft Ganesha has become the first superyacht to fit a dual antenna to utilise Inmarsat's Fleet Xpress Ka-band VSAT service. Installed through Inmarsat reseller e3 Systems, the dual Cobham SAILOR 60 GX antennas measure 60cm and are a lightweight and compact way of accessing High Throughput Service Fleet Xpress maritime broadband. Ganesha is using e3's hybrid solution combining VSAT and 4G data to deliver connectivity, including internet protocol television. It also enables the vessel to manage and monitor cyber security. “Ganesha is one the world's most beautiful performance sailing yachts,” said Roger Horner, group MD e3 Systems. “With Inmarsat's Fleet Xpress solution, we have been able to provide global connectivity and improve her looks by replacing the overpowering original domes and her performance by reducing the weight in the rig.” The Fleet Xpress dual antenna solution was chosen for its ability to provide guaranteed global bandwidth. Ganesha's itineraries take her round the world and the combination of Inmarsat's high-speed Ka-band technology and L-band FleetBroadband backup, reinforced with automatic switching between the two antennas, overcomes the threat of line-of-sight signal outages caused by rig and sails. “When combined with our hybrid solution the yacht also has 4G, ensuring three alternative means of communication - a win, win, win situation,” added Roger.

NEPTULINK DELIVERS LOWLATENCY INTERNET ACCESS NeptuLink offers connectivity solutions for yachts, luxury vessels and offshore race boats delivering low-latency internet access up to 100Mbps. Designed and engineered to be sturdy and attractive, NeptuLink operates by picking up a 4G or 3G/GPRS signal and converting it into an onboard network. This provides optimal signal reception by allowing for radio wave propagation traits over the sea while compensating for the rolling and pitching motions a superyacht routinely experiences on any voyage. NeptuLink enables fast and highly reliable data and voice connection up to 20NM offshore, so users can upload photos and video to social media and stream films or TV. Fast and reliable internet access is used for vessels' safety and operational uses. Neptulink has been the connectivity solution partner for yacht races including La Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro and La Solitaire Urgo Le Figaro. In harbour NeptuLink's Smart Network Switch changes from 4G to onshore wi-fi, enabling users to economize on 4G data usage. Switching from VSAT to lower-latency connectivity ensures owners, guests and crew to experience the best available internet access no matter where the vessel is sailing.
Cox Powertrain is undertaking final stage testing of its 300hp CXO300 outboard diesel. One of the markets that the CXO300 is aimed at is superyacht tenders, where users require outboards that offer the same highperformance characteristics as inboard engines, but with the flexibility and convenience of an outboard diesel engine. “The CXO300's higher torque means highperformance hulls can reach low planning speeds at less rpm than petrol equivalents,” said Cox's global sales director Joel Reid. “The longer service intervals and greater range of a diesel outboard will also be very attractive, however many superyacht owners will see the main advantage as being able to ditch petrol altogether, for the obvious safety and practical reasons.”
The eight-cylinder CXO300 is available in black or white and comes in three different shaft lengths; 25in (635mm), 30in (762mm) and 35in (889mm). Operating at 480ft per lb torque, it offers an engine prepping speed of 3,700 to 4,000rpm with the company claiming it uses

SAFETY IS HIGH ON THE AGENDA FOR SMG
18 MONTHS DEVELOPMENT Actisense has released a new NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi gateway with data logging technology that has the ability to record navigational and engine data. The new W2K-1 can transmit NMEA 2000 data using TCP and UPD while also offering support for conversion to NMEA 0183 and also features a voyage data recorder enabling the device to log a wide variety of vessel data such as position, speed, course, depth, windspeed and engine data. “Whilst there are several Wi-Fi gateways on the market, we are thrilled to be leading the way when it comes to data logging through Wi-Fi,” said Phil Whitehurst, Actisense CEO. “As the way people consume technology continues to advance it's important that our marine electronics not only respond to but also anticipates these trends.” Vessel data is logged on the W2K- 1's internal micro SD card, which can hold approximately 16 days of data for later analysis of the voyage. The W2K-1 has been in development for 18 months with fine-tuning based on customer feedback from 45 different countries. 8 Actisense will be exhibiting at Seawork in June on stand PY61
SMG has two products in the Seawork 2019 Innovations Showcase Awards; Shakespeare's Galaxy INFL8 inflatable antenna and the LiFOS 68Ah advanced lithium iron phosphate battery from Solar Technology. The INFL8 is deployed via a CO2 cartridge or a manual tube and inflates to 5ft (1.6 m) to offer a full 3dB antenna. After use, it can be deflated and stowed away until it is needed again. This antenna can also be used in non-emergency situations where space is at a premium, such as on jet skis, powerboats and kayaks. HIGH-CYCLING The LiFOS 68AH advanced lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery weighs 7.8kg and is able to deliver Seawork's Women in the Marine Industry Event will once again be sponsored by Barton Marine. Barton CEO, Suzanne Blaustone believes that hosting networking events such as Women in Marine, provides a great opportunity for thought leaders to share their stories and career pathways, encouraging everyone down the career pipeline to overcome challenges and push on to achieve their personal goals within the marine industry. Bringing people together helps build a stronger community within the industry and creates a support network where ideas, best practice and opportunities can be passed between peers, she said. “The 2018 Women in Marine event was a great
reliable and safe power in high-cycling applications. With a 90% depth of discharge capability, the 68 Amp hour capacity is equivalent to a 120 Amp hour lead acid battery. The state of charge can be monitored through an app. Other products on the SMG stand include Life Cell and SPOT X. The Life Cell ditch case stows emergency safety gear (sold separately) in a water tight container that floats. It is mounted on a dedicated bracket that can be removed by hand or will float off if the boat becomes submerged. SPOT X provides two-way satellite messaging so adventurers can stay connected to family, friends and colleagues whenever they are outside of mobile

MAN Energy Solutions MAN 175D SCR system has completed its final type approval test and is now IMO Tier III compliant. Since the beginning of its development, the company has intensively tested the MAN 175D SCR system at its Danish test centre. During this process, the SCR technology has accrued more than 5,000 operating hours, both in Denmark and aboard an operative offshore vessel where MAN Energy Solutions reports that the technology performed efficiently and reliably. The SCR system was released for serial production in October 2018 and won its first order early this year. Due to its IMO NOx Scheme A certification procedure the system can be installed directly without further on-board confirmation tests. The type approval covers not only the 12V175D in all its released applications, but also the 16V and 20V versions, which will be launched in the near future and will employ identical SCR components as used in the 12V system. 8 Visit MAN Engines at Seawork International 2019 on stand PB3

GNSS RESILIENCE IN THE AGE OF CYBER CRIME 8 RPNT improves the reliability, performance and safety of navigation signals
Credit: Orolia Maritime
Vessel management ecosystems should incorporate navigation protection by creating a resilient position and timing source detection and mitigation plan. That's according to Sean McCrystal, senior maritime marketing manager at Orolia Maritime, who says there is a growing realisation that Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) as a source of position, navigation and timing (PNT) needs to be both protected and irrefutable, leading to the birth of Resilient PNT (RPNT). This is the convergence of traditional positioning, navigation and timing technology with nontraditional and emerging technology to improve the reliability, performance and safety of navigation signals. “Poor cyber security could compromise commercial vessels' safety through interference with navigation accuracy,” he warned.
Augmented navigation signals such as Satellite Time and Location (STL), offer an encrypted signal, 1000 times stronger than GNSS, that resists jamming and spoofing. Though less
accurate than GNSS, it can serve as a check to the GNSS indicated position or time and provide valuable range and Doppler updates to the inertial measurements, reducing drift and
maintaining a proper navigation solution. A Navigation Protection Device (NPD) typically includes a monitoring component, which monitors GNSS receptions, analyses
the signals and alerts the pilot on the bridge. Detection scenarios include the NPD activating on the presence of additional signals in the GNSS band or anomalous behaviour of the signal; the navigation solution not matching the ship's GNSS guidance solution due to equipment malfunction or malicious signals; or identification that the navigation solution differs from the GNSS constellations and its alternatives sources, such as STL. Fleet owners are 'under growing pressure to adopt these solutions or face losing their competitive edge,' said Sean. 8 Sean will be speaking at Seawork at 1pm on Tuesday 11 June, on the theme of 'Mass Rescue'.

Energy Solutions will be emphasising the performance and longevity of Northern Lights generators at this year's Seawork. The company first supplied 673L (6kW @ 1800rpm) generators, DC link boxes, AC distribution panels and power electric units to the 12 steel cutters built for the 2000/2001 BT Global Challenge race. The yachts raced in both the 2000/1 and the 2004/5 races with four of them later bought by the Tall Ships Youth Trust. Since then each yacht has completed around ten transatlantic crossings and delivered hundreds of voyages in the Solent and beyond. Over the years the Northern Lights generators have had 6000 hours of use, powered each of the four yachts through more than 200,000 miles of worldwide
racing, transatlantic and local journeys and are still going strong. “The four generators are excellent examples of what we expect from a Northern Lights set - robust, reliable power,” said Energy Solutions' Hugh Cunningham. “For vessels

TONY JOHNS INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY
If you studied the DNA of marine electronics guru and navigational pioneer, Tony Johns, you'd find an extra molecule; an energybased one that propels him through life, immersing him in everything electrical and generating a passion for anything new. Rather apt for the marine sector, if Tony was an animal he'd be a dolphin; these mammals don't rest their brains and when discussing his life in the industry, it's apparent 86 year-old Tony doesn't either. “I've always been interested in electronics, inherited from my father. A timber importer by trade, but during the war he searched radio frequencies, interpreting Morse code and sending it onto Bletchley Park. I was surrounded by transmitting equipment at home and built radios from an early age.” OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT When asked at kindergarten (aged seven) to draw something about home life, Tony drew the wiring diagram of a one valve radio. His father was also chairman of the Mumbles RNLI house committee so when Tony started sailing wooden boats in 1946 around Swansea Bay, he was taught by the lifeboat coxswain. He went onto 'modest stuff' in the Bristol Channel and racing National 12s and Merlin Rockets on the Thames and in the Midlands. With a degree in physics, maths and electronics at Nottingham University (also vice-captain of the rifle

A stint at EMI ltd was followed by a role in the naval division of Evershed & Vignoles designing electronic equipment. The firm's MD was also chairman of Birmingham's worldfamous Walker Log company and in 1961 asked Tony to move to Thomas Walker & Son to design electronic probes to measure the speed and distance travelled by commercial shipping, upgrading the old mechanical towed logs which had been in use since around Nelson's time. CONSTANT DEMAND What started as a onemonth trial as an assistant chief engineer extended to a 28-year career and technical director role, designing and testing anemometers and wind direction kits for yachts and commercial shipping and the electronics for pitot and electromagnetic logs.

“Such logs are still in use today, despite GPS which shows speed over the ground rather than through water. Both are important for feeding into radars etc.” Known as 'Mr Fix-it', Tony's skills were in constant demand; his equipment was used on everything from very large crude carriers holding 250,000 tons of cargo to 25ft plus yachts crossing the Channel. “BP let me take the helm of a new 60,000 ton tanker in the English Channel and I was involved with the fitting of EM speedos to the then King of Spain's fast power boat and Virgin Atlantic Challenger. When the business was sold and directors made redundant, Tony was a consultant for three years. He moved to Navstar in 1988, writing installation and operation manuals for the Decca system, the first SatNav, known as Transit, then proving GPS navigational software for prototype kit via sea trials, handled customers' technical

enquiries and gave talks about the then new satellite navigation to sailing clubs. In the early 1980s, Tony took part in several live BBC TV and radio interviews. “We were filming with the BBC, discussing the launch of this magical 'Transit' black box which displayed your position based on satellite information, and I came up with the name SatNav, saying it should be written as one word. Pity I didn't copyright it.” IMO SPECIFICATIONS Tony left Navstar in 1991 following a buy-out. His electrical/electronic background and practical skills soon prompted a request for him to become honorary secretary to the British Marine Electronics Association (BMEA), a position he's been re-elected onto for more than 25 years. Between 1992 and 2002, Tony also wrote a monthly technical column for Practical Boat Owner. “I'm always busy; upon retirement I took myself off to
college to learn word processing and how to use photoshop software. I've supported both ISO and Department of Trade working groups, helping to define IMO specifications for commercial ships' speed logs and manage updates for the BMEEA Code of Practice, covering the installation of electrical/electronic equipment on craft up to 24m. “I've been a photographer all my life, at times semiprofessionally and also play electronic and pipe organs for five churches in the Northamptonshire area despite not being religious. I helped rebuild and played a three-keyboard cinema pipe organ, write newsletters for the Northampton Offshore Cruising Association and organise the annual British Marine conference. My only regret is not spending more time on my 24ft Cornish Crabber.” In 2010, Tony was given a lifetime achievement award by the BMEA; in 2012 was chosen by British Marine to attend a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace and in 2013 received its Peter Millward Award for 'outstanding contributions to associations'. A member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology and a chartered engineer, Tony's philosophy is 'do your best in everything you do'. Long may this continue. 8 An 1850s commercial ship Massey towed log

Celsus UK has strengthened its sales force with the services of Adrian Gray of Global Distribution Solutions. Adrian, who will assume a consultancy role to work alongside Celsus UK's MD Paul Baker and sales director Mike Keenan will provide strategic resource to help deliver the UK company's growth strategy on behalf of the Oklahoma based marine audio manufacturer KICKER. “It is very important for Celsus and KICKER that the right people are appointed across Europe to expand the distributor network and we believe Adrian is well placed to assist us in this objective,” explained Paul. The KICKER brand was introduced to the European marine market at METSTRADE. Adrian has been involved in the marine industry for more than 26 years. Colin Watts has been elected TYHA chairman at the recent AGM taking over from Simon Haigh of Quay Marinas. Colin's appointment coincides with his 20th year as a THYA director. TYHA represents marina operators in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Caribbean and Asia representing around 111,000 berths worldwide. Colin is the third generation of his family to work in the marine sector and has been part of the Harleyford and Shepperton Thames Marina Group as well as the Boat Showrooms Sales Group. He has served on several British Marine boards at director level including the management and boat show boards and is a practising member of The Academy of Experts (London, UK) and the International Yacht Brokers Association (Miami, USA). Mark Jeffery has joined Ocean Safety as southern area commercial account manager, based at the company's Southampton HQ. Mark has more than 15 years' experience in the industrial and technology sales sector, as a sales engineer and key account manager including working with UK marine sales agency SailForce as a territory manager. “Mark has a demonstrable track record in the commercial marine sector, so he will add considerable weight to our commercial offering,” said Mark Acaster, head of sales at Ocean Safety. “Mark knows us and how we operate, but more importantly has valuable experience of our products and services.”
Aiden Devlin Aquafax
Paul Smith Scania (Great Britain)
Aiden Devlin has joined the sales team at Aquafax as account manager for Ireland and Scotland. Aiden's new role is a key part of Aquafax's plan to offer more support and further develop product distribution to the marine trade in Ireland. He will also be supporting customers in Scotland and further developing business in this region backed by the company's new larger distribution depot in Glasgow. Aiden's career in the marine industry started at Whale Pumps before joining GAP Leisure in 2017 where he represented both Aquafax and Dometic for Ireland supporting OEM and aftermarket customers for both companies. “Joining the Aquafax team at the start of these two new developments is an exciting opportunity,” he said. “Aquafax has always distributed to customers in Ireland however we are putting plans in place to support the Irish market offering new incentives and a better infrastructure to be able to give our trade customers easier access to leading brands. “Scotland is also an important customer base for Aquafax and has recently invested in a new larger depot to increase stock holding and delivery expectations in this area.” Scania (Great Britain) has appointed Paul Smith to the position of marketing director. He will be based at the company's HQ and customer support centre in Milton Keynes with overall responsibility for the centralised marketing of Scania's products and service. He will also provide marketing support to the company's nationwide dealer network. Paul joins Scania from creative advertising agency RLA, where he held the position of commercial director. In addition to his agency work, he has experience within the automotive industry having been employed in a variety of marketing and operational roles for VW Group and in sales and aftersales for General Motors Europe.
