NEW HOME FOR SIBS 2021? Southampton International Boat Show 2021 could move to a new location in the city with a new layout and entrance this September under plans being discussed between organisers British Marine and Southampton City Council. However, BM CEO, Lesley Robinson is keen to stress the existing Ocean Hall will feel very similar to that of past years. The plans could mean the show moves along the city walls which, says Lesley would mean more integration with the city. There could be a bridge to Mayflower Park and the marina which would remain as part of the plans. “It will be the biggest change in 30 years if it happens,” said Lesley who added that zoning the show into different categories is also under discussion. “It will make a lot more sense,” she explained. “We want
new visitors to the show to know where to go.” The plans are part of BM's efforts to encourage more people particularly those new to boating to visit the show. Other plans could include free or reduced rate entrance for students and new attractions. The event is set to run concurrently with MDL's Ocean Village show with both MDL and BM 'engaged in discussions' with the aim of maximising both shows. It is still unknown whether the two organisations will work together, however Lesley is keen to stress that: “Everything needs to be in the best needs of the industry. All options are on the table.” She added: “We're very open minded.” Both shows are scheduled to take place September 10-19.

VIEWPOINT BRITISH SAILOR IN EMISSIONKATINA READ | Editor FREE H2 CHALLENGE Zoom fatigue
Apparently Zoom fatigue is an officially recognised ailment caused, say scientists, by excessive amounts of close-up eye contact, watching yourself on the screen and trying to identify social clues that are far easier to pick up in person. We’ve all been taking part in virtual events – whether it’s product launches, product training, conferences or shows – and it’s clear that these events are here to stay, despite our weariness with this form of communication. Phone calls I’ve had recently have increasingly touched on the desire for face to face meetings and events and the need to hug and kiss people again. However, despite plans to open up the UK again within the coming weeks – possibly by the end of June we may be living ‘normally’ again - there’s no sign of the video call we’ve all got used to ending any time soon. While the pivot to virtual events was borne out of necessity by the Covid pandemic, it’s highly likely the video call will remain long after we wave goodbye to coronavirus restrictions. And there are many positive reasons for this – they’re easier and cheaper to organise and host; there’s virtually no limit on the numbers of those that can attend; the attendees can attend from a wider geographical area which appeals to sponsors as it provides greater value for money. And you can even wear your PJs as the celebs do when taking part in award ceremonies. This month I’ve heard about several examples where this has proved exactly the case (not necessarily the PJs but certainly a rise in attendee numbers). The RYA Dinghy Show is a case in point. In 2020, this was one of the last physical shows to be held with around 8,000 sailors attending. For 2021, an early decision was made by organisers to make it a virtual event and 10,000 people logged on to take a look around the exhibition, a 20% increase. And early reports show the format worked well, with exhibitors able to speak to sailors direct from their stands and still show off their products. As in any physical show, visitors could browse the stands they were interested in and listen to the talks that appealed. And another benefit of virtual events is they can remain ‘open’ for a period of time after the actual event has closed – 30 days in the case of the Dinghy Show. Another example of a successful event was a recent World Sailing meeting at which 140 people from across the globe dialled in – far more than would usually be able to attend due to travel and time logistics. Out of a membership of 146 associations, 140 attendees has to be counted as a success in anyone’s book. So while it’s clear that Zoom fatigue is going to be with us for the foreseeable future, it’s also apparent that it’s not going to disappear any time soon.

A British sailor hopes to demonstrate the potential of renewable energies by sailing around the world using hydrogen power. Phil Sharp has led the development on the zero emission hydrogen power module (HPM) which has just been awarded the 'Solar Impulse Efficient Solution' label. Phil, based in France, has announced a four-year 'Oceanslab Race to Zero Emissions' programme aboard his IMOCA yacht which will take in The Ocean Race and culminate with the Vendée Globe 2024-25. “It is fantastic to receive this important 1000 Efficient Solutions Label as recognition for the HPM as a clean and profitable solution, and also importantly to receive regional government support to help take our innovation forward,” said Phil. “If we are to meet our climate change targets it is crucial that we start demonstrating this technology now through zero emission vessels to accelerate the hydrogen transition on our oceans."

UNPRECEDENTED FALL IN DEMAND The Canal & River Trust's latest annual report shows an unprecedented drop in use of the waterways as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Annual Lockage Report 2020 shows a 32.9% reduction in the use of locks across 172 sites compared with 2019. Adam Comerford, national hydrology manager at the Canal & River Trust, attributed the drop to lockdown restrictions. “The reasons for variances in lock use year to year can be numerous and complex, but in 2020 the reason for such an unprecedented drop
was clear - the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said. Use of locks varied considerably throughout the year. In the week before the first lockdown in March there were around 3,500 weekly lock counts but during lockdown this reduced to below 1,000. Post-lockdown numbers bounced back and from early July numbers soared, reaching a peak of 13,700 in mid-August. Heartening “It was heartening to see boaters, both owners and hirers, enjoying a summer of cruising,” continued Adam Comerford. “The waterways
remain as popular as ever and we hope that some of these new staycationers will return to the canals for future holidays.” Hillmorton Locks 2&3 on the Oxford Canal remained the busiest locks across England and Wales but still saw a drop of 29% from the previous year. Cholmondeston on the Shropshire Union Canal was the second busiest, also down 29% on the previous year whilst Woodend on the Trent & Mersey was in third, followed by Wardle on the Shropshire Union Canal and New Marton on the Llangollen Canal.

BOATERS PROSECUTED FOR BROADS OFFENCES

The Broads Authority is warning boaters not to speed and put other people's lives at risk. The warning follows the successful prosecution of three boat owners on numerous counts of failing to navigate with care and caution and of breaking the speed limit on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. On 16 February at Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court, Mr Drew of Harleston, Norfolk was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs and a victim surcharge for failing to navigate with care and caution and of breaking the speed limit on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. On the same day, Mr Colman of Bradwell, Norfolk, was convicted of the same and fined £800, with £464 full costs and an £80 victim surcharge. In another case at Norwich Magistrates Court on 3 February, Mr Walker of Upton was fined £650 plus costs and victim surcharge of £400 and £65 respectively for navigating without care and caution, with unacceptable manoeuvres and excess speed, and
failing to obey/conform with lawful direction. Last resort Prosecution is a last resort, taking rangers away from other duties, but is sometimes necessary if all other avenues have failed. “We want to raise awareness to river users of the
importance of keeping to speed limits and navigating with care and attention,” said recently appointed senior ranger for compliance and safety at The Broads Authority, Jon Hopes. “These cases should be a deterrent to others,” he added. Going above the boating speed limits increases

“The V12 Verado outboard delivers boaters unrivalled freedom, luxury and power to pursue their passions on the water. This is a remarkable engine that will change the future of boating."
Industry firsts are said to be a two-speed automatic transmission which optimises engine rpm according to workload and a steerable gearcase which pivots independently underwater while the
engine's powerhead remains in a fixed position. This provides more room for multi-engine configurations and a wider steering angle whilst the contra-rotating propellers enable close-quarters manoeuvring. “This engine makes boats easy to manoeuvre near the dock and provides superior handling at all speeds,” continued Chris. “It's incredibly fuel efficient, so boaters can go farther and stay out longer. There's nothing else like the V12 Verado outboard in the marketplace today."

NEWS River Canal Rescue experienced another record year in 2020 in terms of the number of rescues it undertook. In the period from January 1 to December 31, engineers attended 231 incidents - 186 of them classed as major, 55% more than the 149 - of which 105 were major in 2019. Storms Brendan, Ciara, Dennis and Jorge, plus lockdown restrictions, have been attributed to the rise, with vessels either battered by bad weather or suffering water ingress, due to a lack of maintenance, as people struggled to get to their boats. Another contributing factor was the River Avon sluice gate failure in September, when RCR recovered and stabilised 50 boats in under three days. In contrast, with fewer people using the waterways, the number of general call-outs, such as electrical, fuel and engine issues, flat batteries, over-heating and

WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN James Nolan Associates The 2020 US momentum continues for the moment for the US recreational marine market sales, as evidenced by several recent reports. Examples include MarineMax, which reported record fiscal 2021 first quarter (ending Dec 31, 2020) results - December quarter revenue grew 35% to over U$411m. Johnson Outdoors announced higher sales and earnings for its first fiscal quarter ending January 1 2021, with net sales rising 29% to U$165.7m. Malibu Boats reported that its 2nd quarter fiscal 2021 net sales increased 8.6% to U$195.6m. On February 10, the NMMA released statistics showing that outboard engine retail sales rose for the ninth consecutive year in 2020 to a total of 330,000 units, the highest annual sales volume in 20 years and up 18% compared to 2019. Other key insights from the report included that retail sales were up across all horsepower segments, with growth ranging between 6% and 38%. How 2021 turns out is anyone's guess at present. The new Biden administration and its potential impact are beginning to take shape. On a positive note, it should soon announce its stimulus program. In addition, the EU has signalled its willingness to resolve the trade dispute with the US, including retaliatory tariff on boats. Hopefully, the 2020 momentum will continue to fuel demand in 2021. 6 | MARCH 2021

How I got into this industry... I started in the industry around 15 years ago managing stock for a European rope importer. I had great opportunities to learn a lot about how rope is used in various applications and in different industries. I gained firsthand knowledge about splicing ropes, before being promoted to an account management role and I have stayed in the industry ever since then. Best advice I’ve ever received...I was telling my grandfather that I was thinking of going to New York and he told me ''Don't think. Just go! You will have plenty of time to think later. So make sure that you don't spend all your time thinking about the things you didn't do.''
One thing the industry needs less of is... Status quo - it holds back innovation and development and is by far the most dangerous competitor. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... Anything related to the word 'assumption', I find frustrating. With all the ways to learn and communicate in the modern business world, there is really no place for one to assume anything. Best place I’ve been... I have been very fortunate to travel all over the world for my job and seen so many good places, but New Zealand is one of my best places on the planet. I would recommend the canyon swing just outside Queenstown. Don't worry about... Things that are out of your control.

NEWS Allen Bros is to close its foundry, resulting in the discontinuation of its YS range of fittings. The hardware manufacturer says while the YS range has been very successful for many decades, sales have fallen recently as boat builders switched to a more modern alternative. In addition, the company that completed the polishing and anodising of the fittings has fallen victim to Covid-19 and despite an extensive search, Allen has been unable to source a new supplier who can meet its quality criteria. “The investment required in the foundry,
ALLEN CLOSES ITS FOUNDRY anodising and polishing could not be justified for a shrinking demand,” said a spokesperson. “Sadly, we have therefore had to make the decision to discontinue this range.” Some of the YS items will now be manufactured by Allen using new methods and under a different name. The new AY range will be manufactured using Allen's VMC machines which the company says will produce more accurate and reliable products. Bespoke designs can also be designed and machined in-house to a customer's specification.

STRESS AT WORK Stress is a fact of modern life. None of us are exempt and most learn how to cope with it. But stress is not the same for everyone; we have varying threshold levels and different strategies to deal with it. A certain amount of stress is necessary for normal functioning and it keeps us active, alert, and able to deal with life's problems. When functioning normally, we take the usual frustrations, long hours or routine work in our stride. But in certain circumstances, stress can become a real drain on physical and mental resources. To drive the point home, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in a paper published in November 2020, Work-related stress, anxiety or depression statistics in Great Britain, 2020, found that 'in 2019/20 work-related stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 51% of all work-related ill health and 55% of all days lost due to work-related ill-health'. It's interesting that the HSE found that there are six key causes of stress in the workplace demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. Whether it's worry over lockdowns, being made redundant, working longer hours following staff cutbacks, pressure to meeting rising customer expectations or a lack of control over how an individual works, stress is a real problem. Legal implications But beyond the statistics, stress can have legal implications too. Employers have a duty to take reasonable care over the health and safety of employees in the workplace - including 10 | MARCH 2021
with these techniques. But sight shouldn't be lost of the stress management classes that doctors surgeries can offer.
stress. They must undertake risk assessments and then consider the results of those assessments and take any necessary steps to reduce the risks. Also, employers need to consider their obligations under the Equality Act 2010 as stress can amount to a disability. But just as employers have obligations, so do employees. While there is no requirement for an employee to inform their employer of how they are feeling or put the employer on notice that they are feeling unwell, an employee who does not inform their employer of the stress they are suffering may find it difficult to pursue complaints around the support, or lack of it, provided by the employer. As some employers have discovered, stress can be very expensive. Detailed under 'general damages for psychiatric injury', tribunal awards can range from £1000 to £5000 for less severe cases to between £50,000 to £100,000 for the most severe cases. And then there's the matter of special damages which could be substantial if an individual was well paid, as well as an award for loss
of income and medical expenses, the costs of defending the case and reputational damage. Watch out Medically, the early warning signs of stress are often associated with increased muscular tension. Frequent headaches and muscular tension in the neck, shoulders, back and stomach are commonly experienced. Some may feel their heart beating rapidly. Clenched hands, profuse sweating, general restlessness with agitation, and snappiness are other symptoms. Problems that affect work, social life, or family life increase stress. Similarly, bereavement, relationship problems, work relocation, unemployment, or financial worries can leave us vulnerable. Associated illnesses linked with stress include anxiety, depression, eczema, psoriasis, tension headaches, migraine attacks, stomach ulcers and phobias. There is also a link between stress and high blood pressure, which is one of the factors that may eventually lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Stress can lead to mental confusion with an inability to think clearly and effectively. Memory can fail and simple things get forgotten, trivial work chores often take on a far greater significance than they deserve, and things can get blown out of all proportion. Some cannot delegate tasks and others try to do everything themselves. There are solutions There is no magic cure for stress. Some self-medicate for headaches and upset stomachs, others turn to their doctor or even selfmedicate with alcohol and drugs. What were once considered to be safe medications are now known to produce psychological dependence and addiction and doctors don't prescribe freely. To an extent, individuals should try to learn how to recognise and manage stress and anxiety. There are many well established techniques for managing stress. The best known is yoga, but meditation, self-hypnosis, and muscular relaxation exercises, music therapy can help too. The web, including YouTube, can help
Create a plan of action Other forms of self-help revolve around trying to plan the day and time management. If possible, take a short break from work and take a brisk walk. Learn how to become more assertive to deal with people who make unreasonable demands. Spreading the workload and delegating jobs can help too. But also look at diet and include a wide range of fruit, vegetables, pasta and brown rice. It's important to allow time for relaxation. If smoking, alcohol, and lack of sleep are key features of life, seek to address this. None help in the long run. Some of the harmful effects of stress can be reduced through exercise. Exercise is an opportunity to get rid of pent-up energy also experience a change of environment. The relaxation that occurs following physical exercise can aid sleep. Exercise that is age appropriate and matches the general level of fitness are more likely to be sustained. In conclusion Stress isn't going away any time soon and both employers and employees need to recognise when it's occurring and find solutions to mitigate its impact. Content marketing is key to driving traffic and generating leads but getting it seen by your audience can be a challenge. Here are some tips on how to increase the reach of your content. 1. Understand your distribution channels: Don't waste time trying to get your content everywhere, instead focus on a few channels. 2. Re-purpose content: If content has been produced as text, break it down and convert into other media types - videos, infographics, lists or stories. This will maximise the value of your content and increase audience reach. 3. Share content more than once: Don't be afraid to reshare old content, providing it is still relevant and informative, or edited to make it so. Social media feeds are busy places, and most of your audience will not have seen your content the first time around. 4. Don't forget your email list: In a bid to get content seen and shared on social media, email marketing can be overlooked. Share content with your email list - they have shown an interest in what you have to offer and are already engaged. Being further along their customer journey may mean they are ready to buy from you. 5. Build relationships wherever you can: With journalists, influencers and industry figures. Follow them, engage with them, understand them...and share content with them.
8 The MAX Transit Duo
combined with a pair of Poynting 402 antennas the system produces speeds up to 20NM offshore comparable to domestic broadband providers. With an additional two sim slots, the Transit Duo also has an embedded wireless controller which allows the addition of external wireless access
points. The WiFi WAN feature enables connection to marina hotspots and load balancing allows access to wireless WAN, wired VSAT WAN and the cellular network at the same time up to a maximum throughput of 400Mbps. Combining with a pair of Poynting 402 omnidirectional LTE antennas
provides the four cellular inputs that the Transit Duo requires. For marina WiFi WAN connection two omni 496 SiSO WiFi antennas is also required. This combitination of LTE and WiFi antennas extends the offshore cellular range whilst providing a more dependable connection than using a marina hotspot.

Marine navigation company savvy navvy has launched its new motorboat algorithm. The app has previously been aimed at the sailing market with an algorithm that combines all the essential information needed to plan a trip at sea, in one place, on any device. The motorboat version will show the best course and estimate an ETA using weather and tide data. It will also advise the user on their predicted fuel usage, distance, arrival time, Course Over Ground, Speed Over Ground and routing details. “On average sailors check up to four different apps when planning a trip at sea,” said company founder Jelte Liebrand. “The technology is often outdated and cumbersome to use. “Our team has worked to create a platform that provides essential marine information that is easy to access and understand.” The app will allow boaters to check the weather forecast, tides and charts and plot their route. For sailors, the routing algorithm automatically provides a Course-to-Steer and advises when to put in a manoeuvre.

NEW AIS TRANSPONDER FROM ICOM
8 Cyclops Marine's new digital direct load pin is supplied factory calibrated
Digital direct load pin helps avoid rig overload Cyclops Marine's latest product is a digital direct load pin that will replace existing pins in rigging, measuring loads on forestays and shrouds. The pin will provide sailors with data they can use to optimise performance and avoid rig overload. The product is supplied factory calibrated, with all calibrated parts encased within the pin, which after installation outputs 'digital direct' load data, with no external housing or amplifier. “In the past, load pin installation has been complex; pins have featured fixed analogue cables and external amplifiers that need bespoke calibration, often regularly requiring re-calibration through the life of the pin,” explained a Cyclops spokesperson. “Cyclops pins are installed with commonplace tools and can be disconnected from the supplied cable, making them compact and practical.” In addition, the new pins are supplied with custom-made anti-rotation solutions such as keep plates or tear drop fastener tabs which eliminate misalignment with the applied load. The pins are designed and built in the UK using certified materials.

LESLEY ROBINSON British Marine CEO British Marine’s representational role on behalf of members is vital as the new UK-EU trade agreement’s detail is tested in application. The challenges of adapting to Brexit remain profound as additional legislation and cooperative measures are introduced. Inevitably the new relationship has resulted in more complex and timeconsuming procedures, alongside unforeseen consequences. British Marine is ensuring the industry has a strong voice. A case in point is our contact with the Department for International Trade regarding the loss of mutual recognition of certification bodies that is impacting members supplying EUbased superyachts with medicines and medical equipment. We continue work with the RYA and HM Revenue & Customs for clarity on VAT status of UK owned boats, as confusion in this area persists. We are also addressing with the Maritime & Coastguard Agency the loss of automatic rights to operate commercially in EU waters for British-flagged charter and training vessels. As post-Brexit arrangements roll out, British Marine will support members in this new era. We will continue our representational campaign for a future trading and regulatory framework that allows the industry and supply chain to grow and prosper. Keep an eye out for more planned webinars and sessions at the upcoming Spring Expo. 20 | MARCH 2021
FITTING OUT: INTERIOR Boat accessories supplier, Davey & Co, has launched a range of new, UK manufactured fittings. New to the company's offering are a redesigned art deco light, two new oil-powered lamps and door handles. “Davey & Co specialise in traditional fittings, and when it comes to internal fit out our approach is the same - predominantly UK manufactured products, made in gunmetal or brass with a chrome finish option,” explained Jeff Webber, Davey & Co MD. The company's new door handles sit flush in their settings. “It is always an issue that handles are the catch hooks for clothing, bags and lines,” said Jeff. “These flush fitting handles are made from solid brass and with a polished finish these are suitable for pleasure craft and work boats." Also new to the Davey range are two oil-powered lamps. The 0310-Br is a small galley lamp suitable for wall-mounting or table. It is not gimbaled and is fixed to the bulkhead by way of screws that locate in to the handle via a keyhole slot. The company has also

Measuring 45cm with a burn time of around 30 hours, Jeff says these are proving popular with those who want a traditional portable light that works both in the saloon or the cockpit. “I burn mine with citronella oil which helps reduce the amount of mosquitos around the boat,” he said. Finally Davey has unveiled an art deco light. Traditionally made since 1900 from a folded brass sheet before chroming, the lamps are now made from stainless steel with LED bulbs. ”The look, feel and design of the light has not changed but it is now cost effective and hugely more efficient,” said Jeff. “We are proud of our heritage and UK manufactured products and will continue to source from the UK wherever possible."

NEW CATALOGUE FROM C-QUIP Marine equipment supplier, C-Quip, has released a new printed catalogue to work in tandem with the greater level of detail on the company's website. The catalogue gives an overview of the many interior fit-out products such as latches, furniture and lighting. “With so many lines, it's almost impossible for customers to get a good overview of everything we do from a website,” explained Ian Cooke, C-Quip MD. “This much anticipated new catalogue has been a long time in the making. “The initial response from customers has been phenomenal.”

GN Espace has introduced a new, fully electric, combined oven and hob, also available as separate units. The OceanChef 3 Induction Cooker combines an induction hob with a multifunction oven, providing 'home from home' cooking capability on board. The three-zone hob includes a 2.5kW boost function and can accommodate three pans or a fish-kettle using its dual zone bridge function. The Gastronorm-based multifunction fan oven is fully insulated and combines with the hob's energy management system to ensure a
maximum load for the cooker of only 4.9kW. A flush fitting grill gives extra height in the oven and the design allows cooking on three levels at the same time. The ECO Fan setting is said to reach 180°C in less than half the time it takes for a traditional electric oven to reach its higher equivalent temperature and the oven can reach a top temperature of 250°C. With added marine safety features and measuring 50cm by 48.7cm by 51.4cm the cooker has a compact profile making it suitable for galleys in a wide range of sailing and motor vessels.

One of the latest fridges from Vitrifrigo is the TL43 top opening fridge, a plug and play 12-volt fridge that will run for around three days on a standard 100a/h leisure battery. The fridge has a nominal consumption of 45W and a 40-litre volume and follows a general trend towards simplicity. “Particularly in midmarket motoryachts and small sailing boats, there's been a shift to air cooled off-the-shelf installations,” explained Penguin Refrigeration's Zeb Elliott who supplies the fridge in the UK. “Fridges on boats are generally hidden away and they have become simpler rather than more complicated - they're a commodity product.” The TL43 does have a new compressor that Zeb says is a step-change in efficiency; a night mode slows it down, reduces power consumption and makes it quieter so as not to disturb sleep. The unit can run as a fridge or freezer with digital thermostat temperature control from +10°C to -10°C. It can be powered from a 100W solar panel with a turbo mode for a fast chill. The TL43 also features Vitrifrigo's aluminium finned cooling unit and the company's membrane LED thermostat. It has an internal LED light and concealed lid fixings for easy installation. OMEGA REDUCES SHOCK AND VIBRATION
8 The new Rib Quest Raptor uses OMEGA sea inserts. Inset: The new Lavac Smooth has a redesigned bowl
Sea Sure's OMEGA seating insert sits in a seat's foam to reduce shock and vibration, increasing comfort for power boat users. The insert uses patented geometry which will significantly reduce the shock felt through someone's body when their boat hits a wave,
explained Sea Sure's technical sales manager. “A typical seating foam actually amplifies the shock caused by a wave impact which can be uncomfortable, and in some cases cause serious injury,” he said. “The OMEGA insert sits within the foam so users still
Changes to hull designs and yacht building have brought with them a sea change in the style and types of material used for interior flooring. Gone are the wooden interiors with loose floor coverings, to be replaced by laminates and highlytextured Berber-style carpets, says Nigel Oates who, together with wife Jan, runs Dorset-based marine carpet and decking firm, Below Decks. "By the time we entered the post-2010 era, hull design was moving rapidly to create more internal volume, and with that evolution came a more contemporary interior fitout, with the extensive use of laminate cabinets and flooring,” said Nigel. “The traditional twist or loop pile products that have

get the comfort of the soft foam, but once they hit a wave the OMEGA removes the harshness of the shock that causes the discomfort.” The insert can be fitted to any type of seating, such as a jockey seat for a small rib, or a bench seat in a superyacht. Sea Sure has also added
a new toilet to its Lavac family. The Lavac Smooth utilises the same lid and seat assembly as the Lavac popular and the same fixing template, but has a new shaped bowl designed to make it look like a modern household toilet. “The Lavac has always been regarded as the
simplest marine toilet due to its lack of moving parts, which generally results in a lack of problems,” explained Dan. The Lavac is a vacuum flush toilet that uses seals that sit within the lid and seat to create a vacuum to draw in fresh water to the bowl.”

Additionally, luxury woven vinyl is becoming popular for internal use, though it has long been used externally on boats based in
warmer climes than the UK, notably in the US,” he continued. Favoured carpets are now mainly 100% wool,
sometimes incorporating a small amount of synthetic material such as nylon or polypropylene to increase durability, and with a synthetic backing. “The more contemporary texture gives boat interiors a modern feel and, if used in a refit, can update the appearance of a boat without it being out of place,” said Nigel. The woven vinyl solution for loose flooring provides a surface that is highly durable and can be scrubbed clean. The product is 3mm thick in total, with a 0.5mm top layer of interwoven PVC threads providing the aesthetic finish. The remainder of the material is a cushioned PVC backing.

MOTION DETECTION SWITCH FROM DOMETIC The new VFS-HW Handwave Switch from Dometic has been designed for germ-free toilet operation, improving hygiene and sanitation. The switch - which is suitable for retro-fitting features a built-in motion sensor letting the user flush and refill the toilet with a wave of the hand allowing for contactless activation. It has integrated backlighting, so is suitable for situations with low-light visibility. “The switch brings consumers the motion detection functionality that's typically used within
commercial applications,” explained Jacques Boishu, Dometic's marketing coordinator marine. “Its sleek design and streamlined style ensure stylish integration into any head interior, and with easy-to-use handsfree operation, the Dometic VFSHW Handwave switch is the ideal solution for almost any sanitation application.” It is compatible with Dometic's range of Masterflush 8500, 8600, 8900, and Vacuflush 4000 Series of toilets, as well as installation frames from other manufacturers, including Vimar and Gewiss.

NICHE PRODUCT BECOMES MORE POPULAR Beautiful Marine Floors has had its best 12 months with demand for flooring 'unbelievable'. The company, headed by Victor Aspey, moved into a new unit in Chichester Marina at the end of 2020 and is now servicing fitters from around the country. “We went from no demand last April when people couldn't get to their boats because of the Covid restrictions. As soon as people were allowed access, it went mad with so many enquiries,” said Victor. “We're still seeing unbelievable demand - people not expecting to go abroad and are still spending money on their boats.” 8 Boaters are increasingly turning to woven vinyl for their flooring
And Victor explained that increasingly people are moving towards woven vinyl as not only is it is a very practical option to have onboard, but it also looks good and is easy to maintain. “The rubber back on a carpet does disintegrate over time,” said Victor. “American sports boats use vinyls a lot and they've become more popular over in the UK. “It was initially a niche product made in small quantities and more expensive; now as it's become more popular, more and more designs are coming through - different colours and patterns.” He added: There's been a lot of changes to flooring with the synthetic fabrics that are coming through.”
Rising demand for modular components Alrose Products is seeing increasing demand for its range of Marineline stainless steel gas springs. The Marineline range has been expanded to include a number of modular components to allow the selection of standard sizes which can then be customised and adapted using a range of extenders, convertors, protection and locking sleeves plus end fittings and brackets. “Our modular range not only provides the option for reduced inventory with OEM boatbuilders but allows for easy conversion and economical upgrade of old systems in the refit and custom build sectors,” explained Jim Boulton, business development, Alrose Products. “The modular range allows for a quick selection of components from a range of 25 of the most common gas spring sizes in use today.” And he explained that boatbuilders are able to optimise space creating solutions through the use of well-designed and balanced support components such as gas springs. Alrose Products provides motion control solutions in the marine and industrial sectors.
WALLAS MARINE COOKERS GIVEN A FACELIFT The Wallas 87D marine forced-air oven and stove received a face-lift at the end of 2020 designed to make it fresh and easier to clean. The cooker uses diesel forced air technology developed to allow the convection oven and stove to cook food efficiently.
The oven combination is constructed of rigid stainless steel and the stove of durable anodised aluminium. The control panels are preinstalled and designed to be easy to use. The oven has a separate light inside. Wallas also updated its 89D oven-stove-heater combo during 2020 allowing
it to be used for baking, grilling and heating. “That is perfect choice if you want to have one unit which can do everything,” said a Wallas spokesperson. “You can bake, grill, heat and everything can be controlled easy way. No need for multiple units in boat.”

PROFILE
MARK RUSHALL
is a coach with the British Sailing Team 8 Mark talks strategies with two of GB's sailing team
Mark Rushall - coach, strategist/tactician, mentor and author certainly has an impressive CV. He's been a coach with the British Sailing Team since 2006, was the team's racing strategist for Rio in 2016, and is currently working on Tokyo and Paris. A prolific content provider, Mark produces training videos, is a regular contributor to Yachts and Yachting magazine and a visiting lecturer at Chichester University. In 2007, his first book, RYA Tactics, was published and the third extended edition was released in paper and e-book form in December 2019. Following his first national championship win aged 16, Mark has continually notched up National, Euro and World championship wins in a range of dinghy and keelboat classes. Not bad for someone who completed teacher training with no formal career plan and whose life goal is to 'be outside as much as you can'. A self-proclaimed 'terrible swimmer', aged eight, Mark was tasked to swim a length of his local pool in Rugby; if he did, his father agreed to help him build a boat. Having held his breath the entire length, the rest as they say is history. Higher sights “Sailing became my life. In the Mirror dinghy with my younger sister Ruth, we set our sights higher each year.” Both Ruth and Mark's wife Liz competed in 470s as part of the British Sailing Team. Lured by the reputation of London University, Mark studied 'team racing' and physics, and trained to be a teacher. Though he won the British Universities' Team Racing Championships an 26 | MARCH 2021
or goal, encourage the right questions, and support the search for a solution.
unmatched four times, he was underwhelmed by the teaching experience. “I was too young, too naïve, and expected everyone to be as enthusiastic about science as me.” Instead, Mark began repairing wooden boats in north London, moving into jobs with Racing Sailboats, Proctor Masts, Selden Masts, and Hyde Sails. “With no lottery funding, like many of my peers I found that working in the marine industry enabled me to compete and live.” Mark moved to Emsworth in 1990 to join Proctor Masts. “I fell in love with Emsworth, aged 16, and when I met Liz ten years later, I found it was her spiritual home too. “A part of my job was always helping customers improve their performance, but my first formal coaching opportunity was at the inaugural ISAF World Championships in 1995. Olympic sailing was becoming more professional, it was a chance to see opportunities appearing. There's a subtle difference between teaching and coaching and it became clear where my passion was.”
Pro-sailing In 2002, Mark returned to self-employment, combining coaching, writing and project management with pro-sailing. “The strategic specialism was a natural progression from pro-sailing. In bigger boats I felt the need to put some substance behind those apparently automatic decisions. As in real life, if the whole team is on-board with the rationale, buy-in and execution will follow. The models I developed
found their way into my writing and coaching, and a series of strategic and tactical articles for a new magazine gave me the basis for the book.” While Mark's sailing expertise secured his place on the GB racing team, he's quick to point out the coach doesn't have all the answers. “My philosophy is that the coaches own solutions have more chance of success than those imposed on them. My role is to help define the problem
Mentoring “Being a RYA coach developer gave me a chance to complete a professional mentoring programme and explore and develop this philosophy further.” Mark's love of sailing and coaching are clear; when discussing career highs, he says: “Every time you help someone achieve their goal, whether novice or professional, knowing you've helped someone improve or enjoy the process it's a high. “And having a goal, no matter what the project, is vital. If you don't have clear goals, how will you know if you've met them?” Club racing He concludes: “The landscape has changed since I grew up dinghy racing. There are less boats club racing, however lottery funding enables the very best to make a go of full-time sailing, and there are more career opportunities for racers outside and postOlympic racing. There's more training and coaching, but I think it's vital the emphasis is firmly on fun rather than performance, especially with youngsters. That's the only way to get and keep people in the sport.” Outside of work although Mark suggests that as 'work is fun', there's no great differentiation between this and his hobbies - he likes to cruise in his 60-year-old wooden classic boat with Liz. “Seas and mountains are good for the soul, so long as they are with us we are equally happy on foot, skis, bikes, or boats.” 8 Mark Rushall won his first national championship at the age of 16
