AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR SOUTH COAST MARINA

ECO AWARENESS
Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas has announced plans for a redevelopment at Haslar Marina in Gosport. Currently undergoing the planning permission process, the plans include a new powerboat centre, a team base for Alex Thomson Racing and a marina extension. It is hoped that work can begin towards the end of the year. Michael Prideaux, Dean & Reddyhoff MD, said it would be a major investment for both Haslar and the local marine industry. “The redevelopment has come about in response to customer demand and changes in boating habits with increasingly larger sailing boats and greater numbers of powerboats. In order for us to remain fit for the future, it is critical that this hugely exciting development gets given the go ahead.
“It will secure the future for Haslar Marina for the next 25 years and beyond,” he said. The Alex Thomson Racing Team has been based at Haslar Marina for over 15 years. The new base will become a UK centre of excellence for ocean racing including a world-class boat shed, training facilities and visitor gallery. The new powerboat centre will include an upgraded public slipway, a specialist repair and service centre, sales centre hub, public waterfront footpath and 28 new car parking spaces. Other proposals include a new wave screen and marina extension providing 50 new deep water berths and a clubhouse with a new waterfront location for the marina restaurant.
BRITISH MARINE REVEALS ‘MEMBER FIRST’ PLAN British Marine has unveiled its strategic plan 2025 with a core 'member first' culture as chief executive Lesley Robinson admitted the trade association is not 'good at communication'. Speaking at the BM roadshow in Southampton, Lesley explained that a key part of the plan is the organisation's national agenda, which focuses on making changes across five themes to support industry growth. These include looking at talent attraction and development with a Higher Apprenticeship Marine Standard and national careers events, the creation of an innovation group and generating more boating awareness. Dean Smith, commercial director, explained: “The biggest challenge in executing the strategic plan is engaging more with

members and getting them to benefit from these changes.” Other goals include work on Maritime 2050 and its emissions targets, support on category B&E towing driving license rules and clarity on inland waterways management. The environment is considered with issues such as holding tanks and vessel disposal and a technology and innovation theme will promote knowledge sharing through a three-pillar engagement programme, plus support research into new boatbuilding materials and hybrid vessels. BM also revealed plans for a refreshed website, digital forum, faster quality checks for members and a five-tier scheme for membership packages with the introduction of a new micro business membership category to simplify pricing and streamline services according to member needs.

We’ve all heard of the impact of plastics on our oceans, but I wonder how many of us are aware of the impact of other forms of littering. I’m sure we’ve all done it – thrown the remains of our lunch, whether it’s the crusts of a sandwich, satsuma peel, banana skin or an apple core into the water thinking it’s biodegradable and will break down. Or for those racers amongst us, how many have used elastic bands on a spinnaker that end up in the water when its hoisted (and how many people use bio-degradable bands)? Now, while the next version of the Racing Rules of Sailing doesn’t become effective until January 1 2021, World Sailing - sailing’s governing body - has already reaffirmed its commitment to reducing the sport’s environmental impact. The organisation has indicated changes to the way Rule 55 - that deals with waste disposal and littering while racing - will be administered. The rule states: A competitor shall not intentionally put trash in the water. This rule applies at all times while afloat. And if competitors are caught, while the option for penalties of ‘less than disqualification’ remain, it’s clear the tougher wording is an attempt to reduce the environmental impact of sailors which can only be a good thing. Hopefully everyone who uses and enjoys the water – not just racing sailors - will take note. And it’s not just those who use the water who are now having to consider the effect of their actions on the environment. Over the last few years there has been a growing trend with manufactures towards environmentally friendly cleaning products, electric engines and sustainable antifouling among others. Not long ago we were told about Spirit Yachts latest, an e-yacht where even the sails will be used as a source of electric generation and can be recycled when they wear out. There’s no doubt that traditional materials won’t be around forever, a fact that was enforced at a recent MaterialDistrict Show (exhibitors at METSTRADE). The show heard that naturally occurring products such as fruit, fungus and yeast are now being used to make new materials including a new type of leather. And while there is a small (albeit growing) industry cropping up around reusing or recycling waste streams there’s still a long way to go. Discarded boats as a whole are a problem and not just for many marinas that are left with the headache of getting rid of these unwanted boats. In France there’s a boat dismantling network set up with sites around the country which expects to dismantle 1800 boats this year. There are also centres in Norway and the USA that recycle GRP. Is there anything similar in the UK? Maybe it’s time to follow suit? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

"The Sun Loft 47 is an original, versatile sailboat designed to offer easy and comfortable living spaces to a young and more urban clientele who are ready to experience a vacation aboard at a reasonable price," he said. CHARTER INTEREST The new monohull will be offered to charter companies and to tour operators and along with Dream Yacht Charter, has attracted interest from charter companies The Yacht Week, MedSailors and GAdventures. Designed by Jeanneau and Philippe Briand Yacht Design, the Sun Loft 47 features six cabins able to accommodate 12 people on board plus one skipper. The 14m monocat features a versatile, configurable cockpit layout, large independent tables that can be transformed into a sunbathing area and protective awnings that can be opened and closed to provide protection when needed. A SMARTER SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW 2019 marks a new goal for British Marine to boost Southampton International Boat Show attendance figures from 100,000 to 150,000 with infrastructure, layout and marketing modifications. lounge will be rehoused to enable more room for trade. "Although looking healthy, boating is changing and we need more footfall and more new blood,"
explained Dean Smith, BM commercial director. Doubts were cast on the feasibility of future shows when Southampton City Council announced a planning application for Mayflower Park, but this has now lapsed, offering more security and reassurance that the show will not change
dramatically. BM is also in talks with the council about community investment in addition to site maintenance. The show will retain its tenday format and incorporate a new app offering the show guide in advance alongside a free show map. It will offer digital tickets through SEE tickets, using ticket scanning to help improve customer analysis and tailor its marketing. In addition, new catering contracts will be put in place in a bid to improve food quality.
BRIEFS New initiative A new safe antifouling initiative is to be launched later this month, intended for professionals and DIYers alike. The objective of the initiative – from the British Coatings Federation, the Green Blue and the Yacht Harbour Association – is to inform on environmental best practice when antifouling boats.

BENETEAU BUCKS THE TREND Beneteau has released its 2018/19 half year earnings showing strong growth at twice the global market rate. The figures show a sustained level of business and consolidated revenue growth of 6.7% and an increase in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation
of 13.9%. For the period September 2018 to end of February 2019, the boat division generated revenues of ₏403.8m, an increase of 5.6% at constant exchange rates compared with the first half of the previous year. The company’s housing division reported a decrease of 4.5%.
The boat division's growth is being driven by good sales to the North American markets, with multihulls in particular making good progress. Sales in continental Europe are progressing, however markets such as the UK and Turkey have contracted sharply resulting
in a slight drop in sales for Europe overall. Sales for the Asia-Pacific region are down. Growth is being seen in fleet sales and Figaro Beneteau 3 programme. Beneteau says its Transform to Perform plan continues to make good progress and the full-year outlook confirms revenues are expected to grow between 3 and 5%.

65% growth Boating tourism is on the rise, contributing more than £6b to the UK economy. The latest figures from British Marine show boating related tourism has created 62,200 new jobs in the last five years and adds more to the UK economy than film, agriculture, forestry and fishing industries individually. The figures also show a 65% growth in the sector since 2013. Within the boating tourism sector, hire, charter and training – inland, coastal and boat share schemes contributed £132m to the UK economy. MARINA SPACES ARE FULL
JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates Millennial's now represent the largest segment of US consumers. One of the consequences of this is the changes they are bringing to the way brands market their products. When thinking about this it is important to bear in mind that the Millennial cohort spans the ages of 22 to 37 so targeting the cohort as a single unit will not work. Two key changes in brand marketing that are emerging are the rising impact of influencer marketing and the value of experiences. Influencer marketing is a huge topic, Google it and you will come up with more than 90 million results. Influencers are those with large followings on the web and social media. Clearly, you need to seek out those who have established credibility in the boating world. It is these influencers that are the ones you are marketing to because it's their followers that are the audience you are after. While definitions of experiences are multiple it is the meet-ups in physical spaces that our industry could excel at. Millennial's are also prone to turn to their peers for feedback on their likely purchases. Imagine then the potential impact of boat dealers and their boat owners providing Millennial's and influencers with a great boating experience or charter fleets providing a crewed charter day specifically for that audience. Those fortunate enough to have these experiences would be perfect peers and/or influencers.

LESLEY ROBINSON Indonesia. A great example of mind over matter.
How I got into this industry... My background and experience has been in customer facing commercial organisations primarily managing levels of strategic change. Prior to British Marine I joined MDL Marinas and was MD there for around three years. Having enjoyed sailing since university, it was a great way to get into an industry that I'm really interested in. Best advice I've ever received... My father always used to say, 'It's mind over matter'. If you put your mind to something, you can generally achieve it. You should really read... Alone by Brett Archibald. It's a true story about a South African sailor who was lost overboard for 28 hours in the remote Mentawai Straits in
One thing the industry needs less of is... Traditionalism. We need to encourage our industry to open up to innovation and new thinking, to look at and learn from other industries and find ways to move forwards. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... Thinking outside the box. What box? We should always be thinking laterally. Best place I've been... I've been to 93 countries so it's hard to pick just one. But you can't beat bareboat sailing in deserted bays around the Caribbean or anywhere else warm and reasonably empty. Don't worry about... Things that you can't change. But you can be positive about ones that you can influence.
Favourite meal... I've got two favourites; freshly grilled squid with mashed potato (bizarre but true) but also a bacon butty on deck at sunrise. One thing I couldn't live without... It's actually three things: great colleagues, great friends and intellectual challenge. How I cope with stress... I need 'my time'. For me that's exercise - gym, running, yoga; time with friends and time spent doing things for others (I sit on two charity boards and do some pro bono work). Something about you that people might be surprised by... I'm a bit of a WWII aeroplane buff. I went up in a two-man Spitfire last year which was a dream come true and this year I will taxi a Lancaster Bomber (I hope). Lesley Robinson is CEO of British Marine
JAMES BOND STYLE RIB TO LAUNCH IN WALES A James Bond-style amphibious RIB that uses a four-wheel drive to enter and leave the sea will be making its European debut in North Wales. The £220,000 AMP RIB has wheels on legs that drop down to enable the craft to drive out of the sea and up the beach. It will be brought to the All Wales Boat and Leisure Show by Pwllheli and Southampton-based Ideal Boat, which has designed bespoke versions of the vessel with Ocean Craft Marine that supplies rigid inflatables for the military and law enforcement agencies world-wide. “It's a quality rigid inflatable boat with seating that can cope with bad seas if necessary and has an onboard 35hp Vanguard engine as well as the 4wd hydraulic legs which enables it to be driven on dry land,” said Ideal Boat MD, Neville Williams. “It's very James Bond; it's very glamourous and a lot of fun.” EVENTS Ideal Boat will also show some of their other brands at the show including Chaparral, Finnmaster, Husky, Robalo, Spectre and Capelli. Show organiser Davina Carey-Evans, who is MD of Beaumaris-based Sbarc Event Management, said this year's show will include a strong leisure element and its new location of Anglesey Showground is expected to help turn the island into a major events hub. 8 The show will take place from May 30 to June 1.

BUSINESSMATTERS MARK STEVENS: Senior Associate in the employment team at VWV
EMPLOYEES WITH CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS A recent study conducted for the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice found that 11 million in the UK have a criminal record and that 75% of employers admit to rejecting a job applicant once a criminal conviction is disclosed. It's important to note that an employer can obtain information on a person's criminal record. They can do so in one of two ways - either by asking the candidate or employee directly or by requesting an official criminal record check by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The treatment of individuals with criminal records is set out in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (ROA 1974). Subject to certain exemptions, a person whose conviction is spent is entitled to hold themselves out as a having a clean record - only 'unspent' convictions need to be disclosed. UNFAIR DISMISSAL If an individual has a spent conviction and they choose
If an individual has a spent conviction and they choose not to disclose it when questioned, subject to certain exemptions, they cannot be penalised. Failure to disclose a spent conviction is not a lawful ground for dismissal or exclusion and so an employee dismissed on these grounds may bring a claim for unfair dismissal
not to disclose it when questioned, subject to certain exemptions, they cannot be penalised. Failure to disclose a spent conviction is not a lawful ground for dismissal or exclusion and so an employee dismissed on these grounds may bring a claim for unfair dismissal. The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 identifies that in certain cases spent convictions should be disclosed, including: 5 professions such as medicine, lawyers and accountants; 5 those employed to uphold the law;
5 certain regulated occupations, including financial services; 5 those who work with children and vulnerable adults; and 5 those who could pose a risk to national security. A person can be asked about their spent convictions under the Exceptions Order as long as the question is for the purposes of assessing suitability for a role. At the time of asking it should be made clear to the applicant that they are obliged to disclose spent convictions. If an applicant fails to disclose a spent conviction in these circumstances an
employer will have a valid reason for withholding or withdrawing an offer of employment or dismissal. Employers should remember when considering requesting a DBS check that this can only be requested if the individual in question is to undertake a role set out in the Exceptions Order. That said, there is now the option for an individual to request a basic certificate from the DBS which includes details of unspent convictions and cautions. However an employer cannot force an employee to get this. EXISTING RECORD If the conviction is spent and the position applied for does not fall under the Exceptions Order the employer may not refuse to employ the individual on the basis of the conviction; if the conviction is spent, but the position falls under the Exceptions Order, then an employer may refuse to employ the individual and if the conviction is not spent the employer may refuse to employ the individual. As before, an employee is
entitled to withhold a spent conviction, subject to the exceptions and it is likely that if an employee with qualifying service is dismissed for this reason the dismissal will be unfair. If a person has deceived their employer about a criminal record and they were not entitled to withhold the information, the employer may terminate their employment contract for breaching the implied term of mutual trust and confidence. Care should be taken as an employer will need to show that dismissal was within the band of reasonable responses this includes thinking about the employee's performance record as well as whether or not the conviction was relevant or particularly serious. In summary, employers can continue to reject applications on the basis of a criminal record without taking these steps. However, giving more thought to the situation may open up a wider range of suitable candidates for a role.
BREXIT JEREMY USHER: Sales Director, Solar Technology International
BREXIT HAS TURNED INTO A MAJOR FIASCO Jeremy Usher, sales director at Solar Technology International, is not impressed with the Brexit process so far. In fact, he would go far as to say that “it's a mess. What was supposed to be the UK getting its borders and controls back has tuned into a fiasco of major proportions and is now undermining the very core of our political system and parties that were elected to represent the people.” As to how Brexit has
10 | MAY 2019
affected business, Jeremy reports that the company has taken protective steps: “From our side we put an extra £250,000 of stock in to protect us from any market changes / fluctuations and to keep us ahead of the competition.” Overall, though, he says that business is on the rise and has been year on year, “we have seen a notable rise in the first quarter of this year, with the marine side galloping ahead as customers buy quality rather
than eBay Chinese specials. The motto 'Buy Once' seems even more prevalent in today's market where customers are buying to reduce carbon foot print and reduce fossil fuel usage.” EFFICIENT AND FRIENDLY Fortunately for Jeremy, his customers seem to see the benefit (and quality) of panels now on the market with new charging systems which are making solar charging more efficient and user friendly.
He adds that customers are taking note of 'silent running' because “there is nothing worse than having tranquillity interrupted by diesel generators where ever you are.” Also, lithium phosphate batteries are taking off as they're safer compared to lithium iron. In other words, technology is countering Brexit. Looking to the future, Jeremy doesn't see Brexit affecting business: “We will all keep doing what we are doing. For those of us
importing parts and manufactured goods from abroad then there are always options to have a European warehouse. We have done this in the past and I am sure the forward-thinking guys in this business will be looking to do this again to get around any negative issues that present themselves.” In summary, Jeremy believes that “we are all resourceful people, we don't like change, but we will rise to the challenge however hard it is and survive.”

SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TICK MORE BOXES Now is the right time for marina developers to seize the opportunity to find smarter ways to reduce costs while promoting sustainability. That's according to Dura Composites MD Stuart Burns, supplier of composite marina and pontoon decking. “The tropical hardwoods and preservative treated timbers which were widely in use 20 years' ago are no longer seen as the most viable option due to their expense and high maintenance requirements,” he said. “These days, we're seeing marina construction companies and developers opt for more sustainable and innovative solutions which tick a wider range of boxes and can adapt to the needs of changing climates.” LANDFILL WASTE And he explained that composite decking is made
from a mixture of hardwood waste and recycled plastic, materials that would otherwise end up in landfill. Dura Composites achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification in 2011 meaning its boards are sustainable and good for the environment. “It's important to consider the whole lifecycle of the
material and all its associated costs, including installation, how long it will last and what kind of maintenance (if any) it will require to keep it functioning and looking its best,” said Stuart. Dura's latest product is its GRP Duct Cover offering a low maintenance, heavy duty solution. “GRP products offer

CLEAN WASTEWATER BETTER THE GREEN WAY Engineering services provider Afeco has launched a filter system to ensure wastewater treatments work effectively, minimising pollution. Bio-buffer is an ecofriendly product that adds alkalinity to onboard water ensuring that the biological wastewater treatment process can work effectively. “Maintaining a high level of alkalinity within a biological wastewater treatment system is crucial for supporting the stable conditions required for optimal performance,” explained Phil Thomas, technical manager at Afeco. “Cleaning products affect the pH of wastewater and during the biological conversion of organic waste, natural acids are produced. With sufficient alkalinity present in the system the pH and acids are neutralised but without sufficient alkalinity available to buffer the acidity, sub-optimal conditions are created.” INDIVIDUALLY TAILORED Afeco's Bio-buffer is a proprietary alkalinity raising filter system that uses a self-limiting media blend tailored to suit the flow requirements of an individual system. Water passes through a filter system before being biologically treated. This saturates the water with sufficient alkalinity to provide the buffering capacity required to maintain optimal alkaline conditions and help support a healthy biological system. “Bio-buffer improves the performance and stability of your wastewater system, particularly when required to remove ammonia,” added Phil. “[It helps] avoid the biological upset caused by significant changes in wastewater characteristics.”

Solar Technology International has produced a guide to help companies guide their customers to the right size panel. The chart considers the size of the boat, the number of occupants, location and usage. The different size and wattage of panels can be easily adapted to suit specific needs. The PV Logic solar panels can be flexible, rigid or fold up to suit every type of boat from yacht to motorboat and dinghy to narrowboat. DIESEL BUG PREVENTION Fuel-Guard’s FGD100 decontaminator and water separator is designed for narrowboats and cruisers, designed to keep a vessel's fuel free from contamination, often caused by water or dirt. “Known as diesel bug, it's often caused because biodiesel pulls in moisture from the air and encourages water build up in the fuel tank,” said Fuel-Guard's Ian Currie. “If untreated, water or other contaminants in fuel tanks cause filters to become blocked and damage the vessel's fuel injection system.” The FDG100 has a lifetime micro-mesh filter which can be cleaned and reused. It is designed with a clear bowl so users to see a buildup of water or contamination in the fuel system. Fuel-Guard's range of treatments for contaminants will all be on show at Crick, where visitors can also see vessels fitted with FuelGuard systems. Previous Favourite Boat winner, Threpence Ha'Penny, has three filter systems fitted for the main fuel tank, the domestic appliance fuel and a fuel polishing system.
RULE’S AUTO PUMP HAS IMPROVED SENSING Rule's new Rule Mate auto bilge pump and shower drain box will be shown to the inland waterways market for the first time at Crick Boat Show 2019. The pump is available in three sizes - 500 gallons per hour, 800 GPH and 1100 GPH - or 1,890, 3,028 and 4,164 litres per hour respectively. It has improved sensing compared to the previous model, turning on and off automatically and a thermal cut-off to prevent overheating. “A load sensor on the pump carries out a double check so the pump won't run if it's not required,” explained Richard Call, marine sales manager UK for Rule's parent company Xylem Water Solutions. “Rule has also further developed the pump so it
has better discharge and a reduced footprint - it's about a third smaller than it used to be so can fit into very small corners of the bilge.” The pump will automatically turn on when the water level reaches 50mm and will continue pumping until the level is less than 9mm. The new shower drain box is available in two sizes, 800 GPH and 1100 GPH and provides a convenient way of taking water from a shower and galley sink into the shower box which then automatically pumps the water into the grey water tanks. The box includes an automatic pump and switch and has been made as user friendly as possible with no tools required for servicing or cleaning.
GIGA Turbines will exhibit its new range of single, double and 5V wind turbines for the first time at Crick Show. MANOEUVRING Switching into quiet and nonpolluting electric mode is attractive to canal users, especially when operating in locks or manoeuvring near moorings, explained Hybrid Marine's Graeme Hawskley. “Using the electric motor also means the propeller can spin at very low speeds giving improved slow speed control and users can accelerate from full forward to full reverse very quickly, making electric power ideal for manoeuvring,” he said.
Hybrid Marine supplies battery banks large enough to enable users to operate for days on electric power, reducing the need for and the cost of diesel fuel. The company will also show examples of battery systems that have been in use for more than ten years. “Using hybrid also means that boat owners do not need gas onboard, as they can use electric power generated by our systems for cooking,” Graeme added.

environment,” says Kate Munro, MMP marketing coordinator. “We developed the Canal Line to be more robust and with a propeller design that ensures canal and inland waterway boaters get a smoother experience when motoring.” The Canal Line range of propellers are designed with
extra thickness at the propeller edge and tip to provide greater resistance to impact damage. The skew design profile reduces vibration, while the high-definition anti-singing edge eliminates vortexinduced noise. In addition to off-the-shelf propeller production, MMP produces fully customised made-to-order propellers from 250mm to 2600mm. The company's manufacturing facilities use CAD-CAM and CNC technology with flow modelling software to predict and control the pour of molten metal in production process. This ensures repeatable high tolerance production across the entire range. MMP's facilities include propeller refurbishment and repair service and next day delivery service for standard size propellers.

Following a spate of callouts where River Canal Rescue has encountered inadequate or incorrectly positioned bilge pumps, the assistance firm is reminding boaters that two are better than one to keep a vessel safe. RCR is concerned that, as the installation of bilge pumps is not a mandatory legislative requirement, they are not given the priority they deserve. “A maintenance pump manages low levels of water ingress consistently," explained operations director, Jay Forman. "It should be positioned where water ingress is common, such as near the stern gland or directly under deck boards."
disastrous event. It should be able to pump considerably more water than its maintenance counterpart and as it plays an early warning role and responds without prompting, must be automatic."
The pump should be positioned in an area most at risk of serious ingress and two to three inches higher than the maintenance pump or where water would not be expected to reach, added Jay.

By making the outlet point as visible as possible, water pumped overboard will catch the eye and alert users if there is an issue.
LEESAN INTRODUCES GREEN CONSUMABLES LeeSan will show its range of environmentally safe consumable products at Crick Boat Show alongside its range of on-board toilets, tanks, pumps and pump-out systems. “The demand is for onboard bathrooms to match the styling, quality and reliability of those at home,” says sales manager Karl Sutcliffe, “We're focusing on making this essential element of boating as 8 LeeSan Marine Green Toilet Cleaner/Lubricator has been developed to help maintain the longevity of a toilet
comfortable, simple and trouble free as possible.” LeeSan's toilet range includes electric, low flush units that work at the touch of a button and ensure optimum use between pump outs. Digital tank measuring gauges with accurate, cockpit mounted displays show when service is required. NORCO DEBUT AT SEAWORK 2019 Composites and boatbuilding company Norco will be exhibiting at Seawork for the first time this year. Established in 1985 in Dorset, Norco concentrates on large composite structures and GRP mouldings for end users in the UK and Europe. The company operates from five sites with an overall capacity of 100,000sq ft and employing more than 170 workers to provide a composites manufacturing service from design and engineering through to parts manufacturing and final assembly. It is certified to ISO9001 and ISO14001 and holds the UK government Cyber Essentials accreditation. One of Norco's projects is manufacturing carbon suspension crew seats for sea search and rescue boats.
8 Military workboats are a Norco speciality
The seats are designed to dampen the motion of the boat over all sea conditions, which include extreme crashing waves. The improved stability from the seats ensures that the rescue crew have better visibility and can track
objects out of the windows with ease whilst moving quickly over rough seas. The carbon bucket seat is a custom designed part that fits the requirements of the boat/operator, including armrests, slider tubes and footrest. 8 Visit Norco at Seawork International 2019 on stand PB35

PROFILE
ROB CROSS ATLANTIC YACHTS MD
When Atlantic Yachts MD, Rob Cross, moved from West Sussex to a village near Plymouth, aged 11, little did he realise it would propel him to a career in yacht sales and recognition as 'Entrepreneur of the Year'. “My grandfather was posted to Plymouth during the war, where he met my grandmother. They had a boat on the River Yealm and my mother was a keen sailor. I joined the Yealm Yacht Club as a cadet, moved onto Plymouth College School at 13 and the Navy Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at 16.” Rob raced Mirror dinghies (his first boat), Lasers and 420s and was an instructor with the CCF, teaching in Bosuns in Plymouth Sound. A summer job at Newton Ferrers Sailing School followed where Rob taught on classic open boats, some more than 100 years old. “I was an instructor for two years and at 18, completed my RYA instructor's qualification.” Over a four-year period covering a gap year and holidays while studying for an engineering and resource management degree - Rob taught sailing in Greece and Turkey. In 2001, he returned to Plymouth to complete the RYA Yachmaster course and later became commercially endorsed, working in Scotland.

me that opportunity and I worked for Westways - the south west Jeanneau dealer.” In 2006, aged 29, Rob went to Sydney, Australia, for a year, working for one of the country's biggest yacht companies. “This opened my eyes on how to do things differently and on a bigger scale with 24/7 boat displays and growing business through internet sales.” After returning to the UK, Rob briefly commissioned boats for Peters Opal and Opal Marine, before heading back to Westways. “When the company sold in 2008, I set up Southern Cross Yachts (SCY) in Plymouth, applying all I had learned.” Rob also launched the South West Rib Centre (a spin-off from SCY) and sold it two years later. By 2012, Rob sold SCY to the south west's Beneteau dealer KTK Prime, opening the door for a new venture - The Boat Exchange - in Plymouth. “The idea was to give customers the fluidity they
INITIATIVE The Boat Exchange was quickly approached by Beneteau to become a dealer and it went from a £500,000 turnover in year one to £1.4m in year three with 22 boats sold in 2018. It was this initiative however, that resulted in Rob taking over the reins at Trafford Yachts - now rebranded Atlantic Yachts - in September 2018. “I had a great relationship with Richard Trafford and when he wanted to step back from the business, it seemed natural for me to take over - particularly with

my motor boat sales track record and internet marketing experience. “In order to fully focus on Atlantic Yachts, I effected a management buy-out with Sam Bradley and Mike Berry who continue the great work and customer service The Boat Exchange is renowned for. I'd also just become a father for the third time and we were extending our home, so running two businesses alongside that would have been a bit of a stretch." “We employ four staff and sell primarily Jeanneau. Since starting in September, to end March this year, we've sold ten new and eight brokerage boats. Not bad for the winter.
Our second biggest income after boat sales is from refits and repairs.” In 2012, British Marine named Rob 'Entrepreneur of the Year'. “This accolade had a great impact on me and my business - the win was picked up by the local press and radio. With so many independent entrepreneurs in the south west, I consider this area to be the 'marine business powerhouse'.” Rob singles out Andrew Thomson at Newton Ferrers Sailing School as his mentor and says he's also influenced by his brothers 'who all work for themselves'. Commenting on marine sector changes, Rob says: “In 2008 lots of sales people left the industry, clearing out those who didn't know about boats. This left those who do and are passionate about the sport to ride out the tough times. There's always that 'hard graft' behind any successful business - the trick is to make it look easy.” 8 A chance meeting with a friend gave Rob Cross the opportunity to work for the south west Jeanneau dealer
